Barbaro Updates: 725

updates are now here.

Update 4220: Very cool: MOUNTAINEER MAY BAN TRAINERS SELLING AT SLAUGHTER AUCTION.

Also very cool was Jen who had a few spare moments a couple of days ago and stumbled across a discussion thread on our board about a horse she used to hot walk: LOOK WHO IS LIVING IN PENNSYLVANIA AT AGE 22.., excerpt:

FAST MARKET, by SECRETARIAT,

bred in Ontario by Kinghaven Farms,

won the Puss N Boots Stakes at Fort Erie during his career.

He raced 121 times!

He is at Bright Futures Farm in Pennsylvania awaiting surgery for a tumor.

This became a major topic of conversation in the Turf Club at Woodbine on Thursday!

Update 4219: A bright crisp and chilly morning this morning at Woodbine. The key though, no wind! Pleasant weather if you are busy, so thankfully I was quite busy! Eight sets for Steve. Five before the break and three after the break. A few of my horses galloped two miles today, and at least one pulled quite hard. So now I am pretty knackered again! I started the day in the sand ring with one of Anita's (Terry Jordan's). It is becoming a pleasant way to start the day. Very peaceful. One of our riders arrived at the barn at 4 am this morning. I think a few others on the backside were also early to work!

Update 4218: This weekend is auction theme! The 2008 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky selected fall mixed sale begins today at 3 pm and includes the dam of Rags to Riches, Jazil and Casino Drive as well as Stardom Bound who will win the Eclipse award for 2yo fillies: Fireworks expected at Fasig-Tipton fall mixed sale.

Clocks changed this morning, an extra hour before work begins!

Update 4217: Phew, a long day. This time spent at Carson's Auction. It was a mixed sale (not to be confused with a thoroughbred mixed sale) and there were a few thoroughbreds. No kill buyers were present as far as I could tell, but a few of the horses went cheap enough they may end up at OLEX on Tuesday. There were a few decent riding horses and a few of them went for some pretty decent money. There was a catalogue for the sale, but the odd thing was there were four thoroughbred mares to be sold close to the end that had no information in the catalogue. Not even consigner information. The first two no-saled (reserve $1,000), the third sold for $200 and the fourth no saled with a $500 reserve. Just seemed very odd.

Update 4216: A pretty straightforward morning this morning at Steve's. I had seven sets, none of which went to the gate. Five before the break and two after the break. All galloped nicely. I started the day taking one to the sand ring for Anita (Terry Jordan). He also relaxed nicely as he jogged six turns (it is about a quarter of a mile round I think). I am now off to another horse auction!

Update 4215: Big Brown's stud fee has been set for 2009: Big Brown to stand for $65,000 at Three Chimneys.

A cool short video of Alysheba arriving at the Kentucky Horse Park: youtube video Alysheba's arrival at KHP.

Morning FOBs,

So thankful Alyshea is back in states even though he may have been royally cared for. Just want a chance to pet him while in KY.

Alex, are you cold up there? Here in San Antonio, beautiful blue skies and wonderful weather. May I suggest, come to SA for the Sam Houston meet, you will love the weather and lots of stuff to do. Mango and DD are waiting for you to ride. REally want you back in Texas. As a native Texan, we will make you an honorary Texan! Ok, I've tried my best. Linda

###Joe's blog is early today--yesterday it wasn't "in full" until almost 8 a.m. Today it's there. Same pictures but another heartbreaking tale (with a touch of humor. "still room in the hall closet." That Joe. Such a caution ;o)

###Congratulations to all authors who have books of poetry and a mystery (Harriette!! Super!!) available for purchase. Books make great gifts (you gals really ought to hire me for your publicity stuff ;o)

###Mo The Tiger joined the heavenly herd yesterday, 2nd race at Laurel Park. Broke down and was humanely destroyed. Two years old. sigh.

###November already. Time flies whether you're having fun or not. (:o)

###Prayers to all in need, tomato juice baths to all that got skunked (!), and safe travels to those doing such things.

###Alex, I hope today's horse auction experience is better than your last one.

Thank you for all you do--for us, for the horses.

JOE FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO MERELY GAZE, AND NOT SCROLL: AMAZING TAILS/TALES ONCE AGAIN AND GOD BLESS THAT CLOSET AT JOE AND CATHY'S
**************************************************
Saturday, November 1st... It is officially official. We are insane. A large group of thoroughbreds about to be loaded on to a slaughter bound trailer for Canada. Tbfriends rescued every single one. There is still room in our hall closet.

These thoroughbreds all came from the same place. Some are old, some are young. Some have racing tattoos.

Horse killer Manny Phelps says it is gonna get worse. His exact words: Tell your dumb ass readers to keep breeding their mares. My kids need shoes.

Large groups of horses coming from the same tired breeding farms are being sold to slaughter. Usually $150.00 per horse. These farms do not want to feed their horses through winter. Much easier to have them gone.

You can moan about the economy until the cows come home. You can nod in sympathy when learning how ranches are dumping their horses.

And I hate drama because this is not junior high school. But you should see their faces. Their confusion.

A group of UC Davis students in our driveway, and they want to talk about Prop 8. And how I should sway readers of my website into voting No.

I explain to these girls how horses are my focal point. Sure I care about the results for Tuesday. But any outcome is not going to change what is happening to horses. It is difficult to concentrate on political issues while talking to a beautiful mare who in just a few days will be turned into meatloaf.

There are so many horses in deep deep trouble. Some are scheduled for a euthansia day at another ranch. Some are scheduled for upcoming auctions. Some are priced by the pound and sold to slaughter as we speak.

And we are not talking old, broken down bags of bones. We are talking nice well broke trail horses. Athletes. Horses who just a few years ago would have sold for decent money.

Tbfriends has access to more than 130 horses. These horses come from ranch foreclosures and partial ranch reductions. They come from families who have lost their employment. They come from people who do not want to buy feed this winter. If you would like one of these free horses, it is best to phone. My cell is 530-383-2120. I do the screening. I also arrange transportation. Most of these horses are thoroughbreds, and they range in age from 2 to 23.

A long crazy day on the way. It has been raining, and Cathy and I must hustle with morning chores. Later we could be 67 degrees.

A big Thank You to Friends Of Tbfriends for 80 bags of Equine Senior. There were three of us. Two young guys and old me. We unloaded the 80 bags and stacked them nicely in under ten minutes. With the arrival of many more horses, this gift is perfect timing. Thank you.

Joe

Busy morning here, getting riding done and chores too--before the rain hit. It came up about two hours ago and has been pretty steady. We need the rain, since we had so little rain last year (like none ;o) and good weather would certainly help the hay prices.

Perfect nap weather, this rain.

Gotta break out the crock pot. I'm thinkin' a thick batch of vegetable stew... ;oD

Well, things have been busy...much of the old "stuff" is winding up, much of the new "stuff" is coming in...

###
Dearest Ones, I am asking for prayers for a beautiful dog named Ravi. His sweet human lady, Laura, is the volunteer coordinator at Quest. Ravi has been diagnosed with cancer...he is deciding at this time whether to leave his body or stay here. As a Healer, I can't dictate what I want for him...it is his process...

but I am praying and sending energy for whatever he needs it for - and for wisdom and comfort for Laura (she has been so good to me) and for her horse Legend (who I adore). I stopped by Quest today - felt horses calling me and Laura's horse Legend is really upset. He is feeling Laura's sadness and I stayed with him and his companion horse, Rick (both boys gave me horse kisses...so who am I to complain????). Legend is not used to having his human so sad so I spent most of my time there with him today...

Re the kids at Quest....I was there on Thursday after a 2-week absence (work schedule). The 3 children who I am most connected to are "waking up"...if anybody has heard of the Indigo/Crystal Children....every child here now is one of these souls that have so much to tell us. The three I referred to - beautiful Madison, wise Patrick and the gently humorous Johnathan...are waking up. I've seen amazing movement in their processes in that 2 week absence that have me floored. Patrick's therapist said that he REALLY missed me...the horses know exactly what is happening and I'm working with them on a energetic level now to help enhance the therapists' work. Laura is trying to talk me into donating time for Reiki sessions...just have to fit it in sometime, somehow.

###
My love, prayers and healing energy to all those who need it for their own processes. I love you all.

Greyhounds do not wear timepieces--i daresay. neither do equines. They just want to eat when they want to eat...meanwhile, the human brain is saying/nay screaming:
WAIT WAIT IT'S ONLY 5AM!!!

Ah, well. Good day to everyone:

Mary, I hope the Vet visit for Sherman went well...we are all so tied together. I love to see little notes from people like MJ just pop up out of nowhere. I know we're mostly all here, but yesterday was so--underpopulated!

Sometimes it seems that I have known many of you forever. All because of that big bay colt who still graces my opening pages. So full of life. I am so glad that I lived during "his time."

Nov. 1 & 2 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Nov. 1

The danger point comes after a victory when we think there are no more battles. How many wars have been fought thinking this is the war that will end all wars? Even in our own private battles we cannot lie back and think we have won the right to peace.

We do need to know and remember that we are more than conquerors. It is a life promise, but we have to claim it. Other claims have taken precedence--weariness, lack, sickness--but we are conquerors, even more than conquerors. We are winners and overcomers. Believe it, because it is true, and the more we claim it, the stronger it is.

Where is our strength? In the old times we were strong.

Big job? Start out in faith. Begin to work and the power to do it will come. Make the beginning, get involved, reach to do the work, and the strength and inspiration will come.

If we put as much power into a job as we do worrying about it before we begin, the whole thing would move forward with ease. Showing a willingness to work, bending to it, opens the way and then the feeling of accomplishment cannot be taken away.

Taking an action is like plugging in to a strength that lies dormant until we make contact. It is not just a job well done--but a personal victory.

We know that you are very strong--we have heard that you are very wise.

Thoroughbred Adoption Service Launched for FREE Horses
by: Kimberly S. Brown, Editor
November 01 2008, Article # 13006

Thoroughbreds are great athletes, and they also are great pleasure and companion animals for those who love horses.

Bloodhorse.com and TheHorse.com are teaming up to bring Thoroughbreds in need of homes to the attention of hundreds of thousands of horse owners across the United States. Creating this database was the brainchild of Antony Beck of Gainesway Farm.

With the Thoroughbred Adoption Services, any registered Thoroughbred, of any age, is eligible to be placed on this database of FREE horses. The database will be housed on TheHorse.com and will be promoted in the Thoroughbred industry by The Blood-Horse and Bloodhorse.com and in the pleasure horse and sport horse industries by The Horse and TheHorse.com.

In these tough economic times some Thoroughbreds need to find other homes and careers. This database allows Thoroughbred owners, breeders, and trainers to place a description of a Thoroughbred in front of horse industry participants with the objective of finding a good home for that horse. Any transactions will be the responsibility of the owner of the horse, who will be contacted directly by those interested in adopting that horse.

If you--or someone you know--has a Thoroughbred in need of a new home, please visit TheHorse.com. Links to the database will be on the home page starting Friday, Oct. 31.

Or you can visit Add A Horse to add a horse or Horses Available to view horses seeking new homes.

We recommend anyone giving away a horse, whether to a private individual or a welfare/rescue organization, learn as much as possible about that person or group prior to giving the horse away. There have been unscrupulous individuals and groups who take horses under the pretense of giving them good homes, then sell them for slaughter. (See article "Rescue Highlights Danger of Free Horses".)

The article "Horse Rescue Organizations: Questions to Ask" offers some tips on making sure the person or group who takes your horse has good intentions.

There also are some very good organizations that are recognized throughout the Thoroughbred and horse industries as being legitimate places to donate your horses, especially the sound horses looking for other careers. The article "Options for Ex-Racehorses" will give you the names and contact information for some of these groups whether you are interested in donating or adopting a Thoroughbred. BloodHorse.com BloodHorse.com offers an online directory of welfare and rescue organizations, as does the Unwanted horse Coalition.

Please spread the word to help Thoroughbreds find new homes and careers.

hAY famblee!

Haven't been here for a couple of weeks--work and puder issues.

What is going on now with Chief? How can we help Chief and Sandra?

It's very encouraging to read of the new service for "free" TBs, and of Mountaineer's ban. Now, to make that ban include all auctions and specifically spell out that horses are not to go to slaughter, period....but it's a step in the right direction.

I see momentum at the grass roots level for TBs. We are making progress. We need more, we need more, we need to get the AQHA to wake up....

Could not finish TB Friends' post from yesterday. Could not get past Manny Phelps. Again.

######## Barb - re a short trail ride - one of my earliest efforts was:

"Better a quickie than no ride at all"
Said the sign inscribed on the tackroom wall.

Good morning Barbaro, Alex and FOB's.

Checking in here with the dk green blob over the jeans, etc waiting for the sun to warm the house. Yes, I changed the clock but my body is still on the other time.

Watched the video of the most handsome Alysheba in his new digs....thought Cigar was supposed to be moved to that paddock? Maybe I missed that switch.

Back to my coffee.

JOE ON SUNDAY....RAIN IN CA: gOD THEY SO NEED IT.
************************************************
Sunday, November 2nd... The lady on the radio said Woodland received 2 inches of rain. Pretty sure she meant 22 inches of rain. Our paddocks and round pens flooded. Our yard is now a lake. I helped transport a horse, and Interstate 5 was a mess. The SUV in front of us had their television on. I think it was a James Bond movie. Lots of men dangling in the air.

An extra hour of sleep, but not really. A new older thoroughbred mare to our ranch, and she has a stomach ache. We walked together in mud all night. Dark, wet, and quiet. Never saw a car. Never heard an owl. The mare finally pooped, bigger than any poop I have ever seen. She sighed in relief, and so did I.

A long trailer ride and changes in weather can cause horses to colic. The old mare experienced both.

Tbfriends has access to more than 110 horses. These horses come from ranch foreclosures and partial ranch reductions. They come from families who have lost their employment. They come from people who do not want to buy feed this winter. If you would like one of these free horses, it is best to phone. My cell is 530-383-2120. I do the screening. I also arrange transportation. Most of these horses are thoroughbreds, and they range in age from 2 to 25.

If you count (and of course we do) horses adopted from our ranch, and if you count horses from feed lots who we found homes for, and if you count horses from other places including ranch foreclosures, who we found homes for, then adoptions for 2008 are fast approaching 600.

Including Jefferson, a dark thoroughbred gelding with a racing tattoo. Jefferson came from a lesson barn out of business, and his new home is with a family right here in our town of Woodland. Yesterday the young daughter phones. The blanket they bought for Jefferson is way too big. Perhaps it would fit one of our horses, so she and her mom are going to bring it by.

Who knew she meant right then? At our front gate say hello to mom and daughter. All of us soaked from the cold rain. Mom and daughter give us the baby blue blanket. They give us a bag of smells so great Peets coffee. They give us Sara Lee chocolate cake. They give us hot cheese enchilladas from Taqueria. They give us a tub of just made red potato salad with sour cream. They give us 2 hoof picks. A large bag of carrots. And a dvd of Alicia Keys in concert.

And then the daughter gives us her homework from English. She wrote an essay about the first night with her new horse Jefferson. How she slept in his stall. How she kept waking up to make sure this was not a dream. How Jefferson layed down and was careful not to hurt her. How he drooled hay on her when he snacked. How she hated going inside to shower for school. How she missed him all day. How he yelled in excitement when she came home.

Her teacher only gave her a B. What a lousy deal. She gets an A+ from Cathy and I.

It is Sunday, with more rain on the way. Because of early darkness supper feeding must begin by 4:00. There just might be time to watch a dvd of Alicia Keys in concert...

Joe

Susan E., Chief has CHF and a heart murmer and a very enlarged heart. You can help him by just saying a few prayers for him. He goes back to his dr. tomorrow to see if his medicine needs to be changed in any way. He is on 4 lasix and 2 Enalapril a day. Most of the time he seems comfortable. Sometimes at night he pants a lot and wheezes a little but it doesnt last long. I know we are only trying to buy time. My first priority is keeping him comfortable and happy. Thanks for asking about him. Most of all thank you for caring.

Please help in the New Jersey Rescue if you can. They need funds by tonight!

Thanks from the horses!

Before you look at this image, please be assured that the filly is JUST FINE! She suffered a few cuts, scrapes, and a dislocated jaw, which is healing fine. This is UNBELIEVABLE!

Filly stuck in tree!

Here is one more view of the filly.

They had to get her out with a chain saw. She must have been terrified. So glad she got out OK!

###Please everyone read this......re a thread on DB....Mountaineer Mare funds needed to get her to a rescue that will do everything to help her. She is a horse that not everyone would even try to help. Brenda from ACE is willing to do everything to help this girl, but needs funds for 3months board at nearby facility as their rescue does not have room for her.
Now most FOBs have a heart of gold and would go the extra mile to help any horse, if possible. This is not a great amount and almost half has already been raised. If all conerned about this mare would contribute just a little, she can be picked up ASAP and treatments started. Please help if you can. This can make a real difference to this horse.
Thank you. Ellie az

DIVINE MESSAGES---

far away ,long ago
but just yesterday
in my heart i re live
re work and reflect upon
those fall months leading to a warm winter
that permitted Barbaro
to eat grass and smell new life buried already deep into and under the mulch of
red and orange leaves
..when time was suspended
in and on
his journey

some where in the background
i hear a train whistle
and the lonely moment passes under the sliver of this new moon
and the reflection and reward
of taking time to hear what i saw in the past few weeks
of fine horse racing\
the shedrow still
like a cathedral closing its doors after the holiday uproar
..horses groomed and ready for naps
well fed happy safe and secure

horse racing with excitement
dash and no injuries or fatalities
and tender care unfurled before the viewers eyes
by trainers and owners alike

that a door has been opened
i see
on many levels
because of Barbaro and those who love him deeply IN their lives
by their weavings
actions , kindness and generosity
multiplies
and how he was born and raised and loved
heard and groomed and fed

that becomes
fresh again

seeing lava man's eyes of joy and pride
then the arrival suddenly of
ALYSHEBA,
a gift from the king of saudi arabia

that he would be able to do some thing so generous
maybe tells me
he understands the deep well his race horses give him
that respect for their horses
is deep in their sand and wind and sun
and .
.that
the jockey who rode him to many victories and the trainer, van berg,
who loved him too
they could all re meet after all this time
be the first to greet him on kentucky soil..

there is genius in the attention to detail and timing
that makes me cry

how come we feel his personality? already?
despite the fact that his new stall may be the size of a closet compared to 8 years 8- of
his royal digs

HIS EYES reflected a profound understanding of all this
it seemed to me
about his reward
to get to go back home
at 24 years of age
full circle

so how much of these messages can i fold inside
to treasure?

how about the eyes of Curlin
looking in dismay
when he was passed in the near finnish line of the breeders cup.?
.look at the bloodhorse front cover
and his eye is noting the whole consequence of history
he did not miss a thing..
but i believe
Barbaro;s message began a fresh
when
i saw the eyes of lava man
as they brought him into the paddock
all glistening and groomed and braided
out to his fans
to take his final bows from a magnificent racing career
like john henry.'s spitfire ,'' i got to run or i die''?

that expression of pride,
the fold of his neck
the tilt of his head
carved like from some greek vase
how
he held
his head
reminded me of
hi
their
innate nobility and
how much stretch there is in my own desire
to hear and learn from their very visible and
invisible
language..

THAT
the love he felt for his people who care deeply for him
oh yes, then
i believe that love leaves a deep mark
as if he said
as if curlin said
if alysheba said
if barbaro
nicanor said
and so many grand horses i have fallen in love with
besides big brown
of all walks of life

that life
is created to love
to be loved..

yes these creatures show me the mastery of some higher power
..each to his/'her own interpretations of that higher power.
THAT
living an unloved life is like clipping a bird;s wings and its ability to fly..
IF LEFT UNRESOLVED -
-SUCH AS BY DISHING OUT CRUELTY
INDIFFERENCE ,IGNORANCE
IF
CARE AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL-GETS LOST
IF LEFT UNRESOLVED FOR LONG,

ONE COULD ALMOST FORGET THAT ONE WAS EVER CREATED TO FLY IN THE FIRST PLACE OR
FOR THIS THOUGHT HERE
A HORSE FORGET TO BE A HORSE AND RUN FOR JOY..

BY hearing THEIR EYES
I LEARN AND FEEL THEIR GARDENS
OF HOPE
nobility, passion
and as
Barbaro
SHOWED EVERY DAY,
A REAL LOVE FOR DETAIL
..ATTENTION TO THE DETAIL AND SURPRISES OF EVERY DAY LIFE

THEN 'THAT
life
is a voyage of sorts
the best thing to do is to face it square
AS HE DID
AND AS THESE HORSES RETIRE AND FACE THE UNCERTAINTY OF WHAT THT MEANS TO THEM
OR WILL BEFALL THEM ..THEY KNOW..

so
THAT
BY POLISHING,TUNING,CLEANING,REPAIRING,
THE ENGINE OF my
ONE'S HEART
OWN HEART
ONE'S OWN INBORN
Strength,without regard to extraneous cultures.
facing it ,facing it
that is the only way to get through to the
prayer of life
that john henry in the end
got through and through
as they held him in their arms
and softly read bible and prayers to his bowed head
his old head his hair matted with age
and pressed with age
and care of many a pressed and loving hand
he ate that love
the sugar sweetness of their trust ..
THAT
said it all

in the horses eyes
i see
i will never give up on
ending the road to slaughter .
.to their abandonment
to what happened to ferdinand
who ran many races next to alysheba
.
.the pictures from the past
showed me his great heart too
and i know what end he met
for his valiant gifts he gave uncnditionally of curse.

so the timing of the retirements
the new cycle of racing stars
the beloved jackson brothers
..the heavy ness of their legacy and yet
the lightness of being that the love poured upon them is multiplied
in their hearts in a full circle
right back
what a gift
BARBARO gave me

to see
to hear
to be
