Barbaro Updates: 708

updates are now here.

Update 4150: With all the talk about retirement today, good news from the Better Talk Now camp: Better Talk Now on target for fifth BC Turf start, excerpt:

"I just worked him; they actually waited until I got back from Kentucky to work him, and I thought he went very well," Motion said. "As long as he comes out of it well in the morning, we'll go ahead and pre-enter him.

"I can't give you a reason why, but this horse this year has worked better than he used to, and even today we discussed breezing him with another horse. I talked with my assistant Adrian [Rolls] about it, and we decided he was going to do enough on his own. And sure enough, he did. He did plenty."

Another monday, another computer class at Woodbine: Internet for First Time Starters at Woodbine.

Update 4149: More on Big Brown's retirement: LIVE BLOGGING BIG BROWN RETIREMENT TELECONFERENCE.

Update 4148: Wow, not a good day. Big Brown is out of the Breeders' Cup: Big Brown Injured; Out of Breeders' Cup, excerpt:

The winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) had worked in company with Kip Deville over the turf course, with the stablemates finishing together in final time of 1:12 4/5 for six furlongs.

Afterward, it was determined that the colt had grabbed a quarter on the inside of the right front foot.

Big Brown is retired.

Update 4147: The undefeated filly Zarkava, who most recently won the Arc de Triomphe and was a dual classic winner, has been retired: Arc star Zarkava retired to stud.

Found on Paulick Report.

Update 4146: Another lovely morning this morning at Woodbine. The weather lately has been simply gorgeous. We had a light morning at Steve's barn. I only had four sets, all before the break. All galloped nicely. After the break I went to help out Anita (Terry Jordan). Their regular exercise rider, Mikey, is away for a couple of days in Ohio riding quarter horses. Mikey has been riding quarter horses all summer at Picov Downs (each Sunday). He also had his first rides on thoroughbreds at Fort Erie yesterday. A win, second and a third I think with four mounts. A great start for potentially a good apprentice jockey for the future!

It was also good to see Matt Douglas on the rail this morning hanging out. He is the exercise rider who nearly blew himself up with a barbeque earlier in the summer. He left hospital perhaps a week or so ago, and looked well from a distance.

Jen includes more information on Ontario-related racing, and writes nicely about Jimmy: AND THANKS.

It's a big day for Curlin. He will be working between the fourth and fifth races at Santa Anita. This will be his penultimate work ahead of the Breeders' Cup Classic, if he runs.

Update 4145: Happy Thanksgiving for those of us in Canada!

Media reports for Casino Drive's win yesterday:

Happy Thanksgiving to all our friends up North in Canada. And good for those of the FoB's that get the day off...

Prayers and support for Lynne and Murphy in the Wet Wing. He has a bunch of confusing symptoms and I think she's going to be trying to get to her regular Vet today.

Hang in there. Murph! Your Mom needs you!

Safe rides to all who set feeties on tracks. God, please help us look after your magnificent creations...

UNBEATEN FILLY ZARKAVA IS RETIRED

Buzz Up PrintPARIS (AP)—Unbeaten filly Zarkava was retired Monday, eight days after winning the prestigious Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe for her seventh consecutive victory.

The 3-year-old Zarkava became the first filly since Urban Sea in 1993 to win the Arc on Oct. 5.

“While no one will regret more than my management team and I not to see Zarkava race again, we have decided to retire her to the Aga Khan broodmare band,” Zarkava’s owner the Aga Khan said in a statement. “She will be an invaluable asset to this essential part of our activity.”

The Aga Khan said he had discussed the decision with trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre.

“The quality and youth of our broodmare band is of the utmost importance to ensure we remain breeders of race horses capable of performing at the top level,” the Aga Khan said.

### Thanks to Barb for posting the interesting updates for the Wild Horse and Burro Summit that has occurred this weekend.

I just spoke with Daryl Smoliak who has attended this amazing summit. Sounds like an amazing gathering of 100+ passionate supporters from many backgrounds and interests.

Daryl described the closing of the meet last nite - and of the prayers and interaction between all ...... offered by a Lakota native American representative. WHEW ... sent chills up and down me !

When Daryl introduced himself as a Fan of Barbaro and described how we began .... and all of the horses saved and money raised ...... all broke out into a huge round of applause ! Everyone came up to Daryl and wanted to know more !
Whew - more goose bumps. I see our Beloved Barbaro prancing .... tail high ... !!

Daryl leaves this afternoon ..... safe travels, my friend ...............
He will post much more information once he has settled back in ! Stay tuned, famblee !

Thoughts and prayers to all who have lost or have sick fur babies. It seems we have them for so short a time. When Chief was younger he could have been an acrobat. If someone was watching he would streak (he loved to run and must have a bit of greyhound in him) across the yard jump and bounce off thr top of the 6ft fence and do a sommersault and land on his feet. He performed for anyone watching. Now he cant jump in his chair. I am so grateful to have him still with me. Hoping to hear from Lynne today on Murphy. Lets all send some powerful FOB prayers for him.

God loves you, BIG BROWN, and so do I! I wish you a safe and speedy recovery from what sounds like a very painful injury, and a life of ease and contentment...YOU DESERVE IT!

I only regret that you were IMO robbed of your rightful place as a Triple Crown winner by what was (again IMO) the worst ride in recent memory...

DEE - thank you so much for acknowledging our dear Big Brown...may he indeed be blessed with "glowing sunshine days!"

Posted by: Nancy in CT at October 13, 2008 6:30 PM

ahhhh - I sighed when seeing the headline up top, that Big Brown was injured and is retired. Now on reflecting it's probably a mixed sigh of regret and relief . . .

Posted by: CJaffe at October 13, 2008 6:35 PM

and the Ahhhh turned to groans when I clicked on the article linked up top, and - though he is expected to fully recover - it seems it wasn't JUST a quarter crack:

"Big Brown has been retired," said Michael Iavarone, co-owner of IEAH Stables. "He not only tore the bulb off his foot, but half the foot was torn off. We did everything we could to get to the Breeders' Cup. It's devastating. And what makes it even worse is that he worked great."

OMG - "tore the bulb off his foot" and "half the foot was torn off."

I am so glad he is retired - let's hope for an uneventful recovery.

(My Sunny lost a large portion of his hoof after an abscess near the coronary band "blew" and I almost lost him - he was at the horspital for a couple of weeks - of course that was complicated by the abscess situation - but when I saw the rest of what Mr. I said my heart just fell . . . )

reposting from last batch of Comments

All,

I just received this email from somebody who attended the Wild Horse Summit in Nevada yesterday. This is good stuff:

I was able to attend the Wild Horse and Burro Summit in Las Vegas on Saturday. Honestly, I was in awe of the attendees--scientists, vets, authors, rescuers, wild horse welfare advocates, Lakota Indian chief, BLM representatives, HSUS representatives and many more--with the goal of finding a better way to manage (or not manage) America's precious wild horses. Following are some highlights of the many notes I took (note that all references to wild horses also includes burros):

Some Remarks by Speakers:

1. Wild horses will be extinct in 5 years if nothing is done to protect them.

2. Wild horses have been managed for their existence, need to be managed for their welfare.

3. There is some question as to whether wild horses really need to be managed at all.

4. By federal law, wild horses have a right to our public lands--cattle do not.

5. The current removal program is much more expensive than use of contraception methods.

6. 75-80% of wild horses are not now in self-sustaining herds.

7. Use of PZP (birth control) showed unwelcome side effects in at least one study.

8. The AML (appropriated management level, the amount of land needed for wild horses to graze without causing damage to the range) is not supported by data.

9. The family units ("harems"), which consist of one stallion plus his mares and foals must be maintained or the mustangs will not survive.

Some Suggestions Discussed By The Panel:

1. Release the horses now being held and return them to land taken from them.

2. Look at the original intent of the law and the original herd areas and analyze if these areas have viable populations.

3. Give the public access to BLM documents and create public task forces.

4. Remove fences and allow horses to be free roaming again.

5. Remove the wild horses from BLM control and put them under the control of people who
know and are trained in horse management.

6. Only select mustangs with the best retraining potential and temperament for adoption and leave the others on their ranges. Provide special training for new adoptees.

7. Restore horses into the zeroed-out range areas.

8. Assess all horses now in holding to see if they can go back out on the range. Family bands should be reunited whenever possible, including geldings.

9. Privatize adoptions using agencies such as the Mustang Heritage Foundation and castrate all stallions prior to adoption.

Statements made by the Deputy Director of the BLM, in charge of wild horse management:

1. "The BLM might be violating the law by not using all the tools available through the law to preserve the wild horses and burros."

2. The BLM cannot afford the current program of holding wild horses in pens. Mr. Bisson is looking to find financial relief and has made substantial cut backs within his department.

3. He says he never said the BLM planned to euthanize horses as reported by the media. He says "I don't think we'll get there."

4. Mr. Bisson will be meeting with Congress in November about how to proceed.

5. No emergency gathers will be made without his approval with only a few specific removals but no family units destroyed.

6. No gathers in Wyoming, no removal of McCullough herd this year.

7. The BLM will continue the adoption program with the Mustang Heritage Foundation, which is "the best thing we have going right now."

8. The BLM will look into putting horses back onto zeroed-out ranges.

9. The BLM will most likely use infertility drugs such as PZP (and two others).

10. The BLM is looking into changing permits to allow more horse grazing land and trying to work with several people about putting wild horses on land not part of the rangelands.

11. He would like to continue the stewardship program in which rangers help with water, etc. during difficult times.

There were many more points brought up and discussed at the meeting, these are a few that I thought were important. Mr. Bisson, who seems to have an understanding and empathy for the wild horse problem, unfortunately will be retiring at the end of January. He said that the issue of the wild horses and burros will "get all my attention" until that time and he expects to have recommendations to submit to the White House before he leaves the Bureau.

We need to put our weight behind the efforts being made by the wild horse and burro advocates, just as we have supported anti-slaughter legislation. Our attitude and interest in helping them will dictate whether they survive. We have to be their voice.

MORE TIME TO HELP ENDANGERED SPECIES

New deadline: October 15, 2008

Dear Caroline,

You have more time to help stop an attempt to undermine the Endangered Species Act. The public comment period has been extended until Oct. 15.

If you have already taken action, thank you! Please forward this message to others who might be willing to help.

TAKE ACTION: Click here to help protect endangered species.

http:// wwf. worldwildlife.org/site/PageServer?pagename=can_endangered_species_regulation&autologin=true&AddInterest=1061

The[re are] . . . proposed changes that would seriously weaken the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The . . . [proposed] plan would limit the role of the two federal agencies that are responsible for implementing the ESA, and that are the government’s experts on species conservation--the Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Specifically, the proposed changes eliminate the requirement that those agencies sign off on the initial threshold analysis of impacts of any proposed federal project that affects a threatened or endangered species, or the critical habitat on which those species depend. This means that for federal involvement in dams, mines, grazing permits, forestry activities, irrigation, dredging, and fishing, it is the federal agencies approving or funding the activity that are the ones making the initial determination about whether the impact of their proposed projects would harm species listed as threatened or endangered, or their habitat.

But these agencies have a vested interest in promoting their activities, not in protecting species; and very few of them have relevant biological expertise in making such important determinations. The . . . proposed rule puts the fox in charge of the hen house, with these hens on the verge of extinction.

In addition, the proposed rule narrows what impacts might be considered during project review. Impacts driven by many different actions, such as climate change, would be out of scope for consideration. This short-sighted change undermines the goal of the Endangered Species Act to preserve species no matter what the threat facing them.

. . . [T]hese changes [can be made] without congressional review and approval and . . . the proposal [is being rushed] through with an unusually short public comment period.

Submit an official public comment objecting to the proposed regulations that would weaken the Endangered Species Act.

http:// wwf. worldwildlife.org/site/PageServer?pagename=can_endangered_species_regulation&autologin=true&AddInterest=1061

The Endangered Species Act is our nation's most important tool for protecting imperiled wildlife and maintaining biological diversity. Enacted in 1973 by President Richard Nixon, the law has protected many iconic wildlife species, including the bald eagle, gray wolf, California sea otter, American alligator, gray whale, and black-footed ferret. It is a strong, effective, and flexible science-based “safety net” for imperiled species and is used as a model by other countries struggling to protect their own endangered wildlife.

WWF supporters like you helped fend off an attempt by Congress several years ago to rewrite and weaken the Endangered Species Act. With your help, we can stop this misguided . . . proposal as well. Thank you for speaking out.

Sincerely,

Jason Patlis
Vice President and Managing Director
U.S. Government Relations

2:22 p.m. … "The key right now is we have to prevent infection. He’ll heal. That’s the only way thiis could become serious." The injured area has to be cleaned out and Big Brown will be given antibiotics. "He’s walking very sore but he can stand on it."

Transcript of Iavarone teleconference from Ray Paulick:

Check out the last line. . .. Considering the disappointment Iavarone must be feeling right now, that was a pretty cute thing to say! :-)

LIVE BLOGGING BIG BROWN RETIREMENT TELECONFERENCE
Ray Paulick will be live blogging the teleconference featuring trainer Rick Dutrow and IEAH president Michael Iavarone as they discuss the foot injury that ended Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown’s racing career earlier today. The teleconference, organized by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. UPDATE: Only Michael Iavarone will participate.

2 p.m. … Eric Wing of the NTRA outlines the week ahead. Jess Jackson will be on a teleconference Tuesday to discuss whether or not Curlin will be pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup; on Wednesday, the NTRA will discuss the safety recommendations, and on Thursday the Breeders’ Cup pre-entries will be discussed.

The first speaker on the call is Michael Iavarone, president of IEAH Stable, co-owner of Big Brown.

2:05 p.m. … Michael Iavarone said "today was a tough day." He was there to watch the work with his family and co-owner Paul Pompa Jr. He said Big Brown worked in company with Kip Deville on the turf and both horses went well. "I had my daughter in my arms," Iavarone said as he walked back to the barn. When he got there, trainer Rick Dutrow told Iavarone, "I think we are in big trouble with Big Brown." Said a large chunk came out of the right front foot and blacksmith Alex Leaf said there was no chance the horse could run in the Breeders’ Cup. The injury, called grabbing a quarter, occurs when the back foot strikes the back of the front hoof.

"This was a tremendous blow to the gut of all of us," said Iavarone. He said Big Brown would have a few tough days ahead, though this is not a life-threatening injury. Iavarone expects him to remain in New York for about a month before leaving for Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky.

2;10 pm. … The injury would have required a minimum of 60 -90 days to heal, said Iavarone. "Horses grabbing quarters happens in Thoroughbred racing all the time," said Iavarone. "He tore it up so bad that even if he had wraps he could grab right through there. … We have done everything we could to keep this horse going in the right direction. … To have this come up just shocks all of us."

2:12 p.m. … "He’s a one in a million as an owner and as far as the fans are concerned, there are going to be more Bigt Browns that come down the road. Continue to market and advertise them. Horses like Big Brown and Curlin are great for the sport. As long as we continue to advertise and market these kinds of horses, the game is going to be OK."

2:15 p.m. … "As a fan I want horses to stay around forever, naturally. But I’m a fan and an owner and have responsibilities to the other owners. As much as I am a fan, I have to look at this as a business. … We capitulated to the agreement (whereby Three Chimneys insisted Big Brown go to stud as a 4-year-old)."

2:17 p.m. … Iavarone is asked to describe how the injury happened. "What I’ve heard is that someone said he may have taken a funny step at the 3/8 pole." Iavarone didn’t see it from his vantage point. "To me the work looked outstanding." The bulb was split right in half, Iavarone said, and a piece of the hoof also got caught up in the injury.

2:20 p.m. … Was this related to other foot problems? "It’s unrelated. It’s not even a foot problem. He grabbed his quarter and not related to any pre-existing conditions. It’s the first time it’s happened to me in a work. It’s just a stroke of bad luck."

A question about Curlin and the anticipated matchup. "The banter that went on between the two camps was almost like professional wrestling. Rick and I were having fun with it. We have no problem with Jess Jackson and Steve Asmussen. ,… Curlin is a special horse and I hope he makes it to the race. I’m devastated today. I felt going into it we didn’t have a lot to lose. We had a lot to gain."

2:22 p.m. … "The key right now is we have to prevent infection. He’ll heal. That’s the only way thiis could become serious." The injured area has to be cleaned out and Big Brown will be given antibiotics. "He’s walking very sore but he can stand on it."

2:23 p.m. … Iavarone describe watching today’s work as two F-16s in formation.

2:24 p.m. … "We still own a significant piece of Big Brown. … They (Three Chimneys) were great in structuring a deal that kept us in the game.

2:25 p.m. … Iavarone said he and his wife stayed up late watching a replay of the

2:25 p.m. … Iavarone said he and his wife stayed up late watching a replay of the Kentucky Derby and he admitted getting a little tear in his eye, but he said there’s still one big race ahead.

2:26 p.m. … "He had no front shoes on," Iavarone said. "No bandages, no wraps, no (toe) grabs, nothing."

2:27 p.m. … "Rick Dutrow is a genius around a racehorse. He got more out of this horse in my eyes than any trainer in the world would have. What we were starting to see was a changeover from (Big Brown’s) utter brilliance to his heart. He developed a heart as big as his physical ability was. If we got to the point where he could put the two together you would have seen something breathtaking. It kills me at this point, it kills me, to get this close and not to see it happen."

2:30 p.m. … "Rick handled this with incredible class," Iavarone said.

2:31 p.m. … Iavarone is asked about whether or not he’ll be cheering for Curlin if he goes in the Classic. "I am completely in Curlin’s corner. If they give me a Curlin hat I’ll wear it."

Maribel, Happy Thanksgiving!!! I am glad Chief found me too. One last story about him. I used to have A ford Ranger pickup and it had a window going from the cab to the bed of the PU. I wouldnt let chief ride in the bed but one hot day I had the window open. I was concentrating on the traffic on the interstate, People started honking and waving. Chief had crawled out the back window and from the bed to the top of the pickup. Just sitting up there with his paws hanging down on the windshield having a great time. This 13 years with Chief has make me have a few gray hairs. ########I am so worried about Murphy. Okay FOBs lets put all our thoughts and prayers on Murphy. When they figure out what is wrong then maybe he can be be okay.

JOE: I THINK HE AND CATHY AND DARYL ARE CUT FROM THE SAME WEAVE OF CLOTH. WE HAVE MORE THAN A FEW OF THOSE. GOD BLESS OUR ARCHANGELS.
****************************************************
Monday, October 13th... It has been 4 days in a row of cold winds, and our ranch is a mess. Country Living has cancelled their photo shoot. A newspaper saying Olympia, Washington was clinging to our fence. Now those are some strong north winds.

A very special Happy Birthday to our friend Mike Baker, who today turns 40 years old. Mike and his girlfriend Jill celebrate tonight with dinner in San Francisco. For dessert a hot fudge sundae at Ghiradelli Square. Mike is always helping those who need help. A good guy, and we wish him a wonderful day.

Even in these crazy winds there was Hillary and Kristin at our front gate. Thank you very much for the Costco carrots. This coming January Kristin moves to Davis. She wants to know of a fun place for teens to hang out?

Um, not sure. But each Friday night there is bingo at the senior center. You can win $35.00.

Also at our front gate is Daniel, she is 17, and it was two summers ago when Daniel adopted the gray gelding Moose. Daniel calls Moose a big goofball, and she loves him like crazy. Daniel has pictures to show us.

Daniel tells Cathy and I, just wait. She is going to make a difference. In a big way Daniel wants to help both humans and horses. Next year she too will be attending UC Davis.

In order to be finished by sunset, we must begin supper feeding at 4:00 p.m. Winds were lighter, so for the most part alfalfa stayed in one place. Horses no longer having to chase their meals. There was a movie from Netflix, Shopgirl, and it was okay. Replied to a few e-mails. Updated vaccinations list. Late night barn check, and the gelding Seattle Dreaming has runny gunk in his eye. All day he plays in the wind, and even with a fly mask there is dust. Most horses jerk back when cleaning their eyes, but Seattle Dreaming is a good patient. The man on the barn radio is clever. He plays the song Blowin In The Wind. The big moon lights us up like a parking lot sale at Elm Ford. 11:00 at night, but I can clearly see horses 20 acres away.

And that about sums up a cold autumn Sunday. Here we are on Monday morning, and the sunrise takes our breath away. So beautiful. Hot coffee with praline cream is from Peets. 110 horses already eating breakfast. The Bee Gees on the oldies station...

Oct. 13 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Luther, a Tsa la gi (Cherokee), explained his creative God by saying, "God take Himself and make the fish, God take Himself and make the tsi s du (rabbit); He take Himself and make the wa ya (wolf); He take Himself and make the squirrel, and He take Himself and make me. These things my brothers."

But Luther, what do you do when you want to go squirrel hunting?

Merriment danced in his black eyes and he added, "I just say, squirrel brother, God make you for me!"

I traveled thousands of miles along our winding trails, through unbroken solitude of the wild forest, listening to the songs of the woodland birds.

General: Non-horse - tell EPA - save streams from coal mining

Keep Our Streams Safe From Dirty Coal Mining

Click here to take action [close up spaces]

http:// action. earthjustice.org/campaign/streams_1008?rk=HpAqv3M113C9E

Dear C.,

The Federal Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is poised to finalize a rule that would allow thousands of natural streams and valleys in Appalachia to be buried by waste from mountaintop removal coal mining. OSM's plan directly conflicts with the decades-old Stream Buffer Zone Rule, which prohibits surface coal mining activities from disturbing areas within 100 feet of permanent and seasonal streams.

Take action to protect Appalachian streams and valleys from being buried by dirty coal mining!

http:// action. earthjustice.org/campaign/streams_1008?rk=HpAqv3M113C9E

For years, federal agencies have looked the other way as the coal industry has been allowed to blast away the tops of mountains to reach thin seams of coal. Already, mountaintop removal mining has flattened more than 500,000 acres and permanently buried 2,000 miles of streams, destroying sources that feed drinking water. These actions were taken in defiance of the existing Stream Buffer Zone Rule. Now, OSM wants to legalize this destruction, but the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must first give its approval for the change in rules to become law.

Please take action by telling the EPA that the destruction of Appalachia's valleys and streams is unacceptable. Tell EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson to protect these valuable resources by keeping the Stream Buffer Zone Rule in place!

Take action today!

###My first horse, Nestor--the one who is a "brood gelding" over the Bridge now--caught himself while out in the pasture and removed the bulb on the inside of his left (I believe) front hoof. The wound looks horrific--but the vet came out, cut off the offending flap (because it was located in such a place that it could not be stitched--it would tear easily) and I was instructed to spray this purple stuff on it every day.

I could ride him because he was not lame. When the area started to heal, I put greasy stuff on it to keep the skin soft. Eventually, with the application of Vitamin E oil, it grew hair and Nestor only had a very slight scar.

###Losing part of the hoof would be more of an issue, especially in Big Brown's case since he has such iffy hoofies in the first place. I would doubt that hospitalization is required--stall rest, yes--but his peeps are experts in dealing with hoof issues and the bulb part is no big deal.

Hiya, FsOB! I am pleased to see that the Aga Khan is retiring Zarkava at the pinnacle of her success. What talented & lovely offspring she will have some day. I hadn't realized that she won all seven of her races. What amazing offspring she & Barbaro could've had....

I am very sad to see that Big Brown was injured today. My thanks to Kay for providing some information about the extent of these types of injuries and that they can be safely managed outside of an equine hospital. I do worry about Big Brown's well-being, and please forgive my saying so, but I do not think his owners are of the same calibre as the Jacksons or the Aga Khan.

#### To Lynne B.: I keep you and Murpy in my thoughts. It must be distressing to you that he isn't eating well.
To Tamme, thinking of you as you deal with Chessie's passing. He was very blessed to be in your care for 23 loving years.
To Laurie H.: It must have been such a sad day at your workplace today. Bart must've been the office mascot. I'm sure that his presence will be missed by everyone who came to know him. I know that I'll never forget Bart, Laurie.
To Sherry, thanks for sharing the inputs from Daryl Smoliak today.
To Maribel, Donna R., & Judy Scott in Ontario: Hoping that your Thanksgiving festivities were filled with good food and wonderful companionship. Maribel, I had wonderful mashed turnips when traveling in Cornwall in 1990. Very tasty, I'd never had them in the USA. ####

Re: Curlin - I just saw his workout from today at Santa Anita (5 furlongs in 59.11) on TVG, and he looked spectacular! So sorry that Big Brown had to be retired and won't run in the Classic. He would have been a worthy competitor.

The article linked below from Blood Horse calls Curlin's workout "flawless", and quotes Steve Asmussen: "We have a great amount of pride to see how he is received, Asmussen said. We're so proud about how everybody feels about him." TVG's Christina Olivares (sp?) said that both owner and trainer said he came out of the work "bouncing on his toes", practically galloping back to the barn, and if he is the same 12 hrs from now, they will pre-enter him for the BC. I really hope he (and all other horses) stay well between now and then (and forever for that matter!). Go Curlin!

Well, from what Harriette just added, we'd better get BB under the FoB prayer umbrella.

And Kay, yes, he has had those feet issues all along. All the more reason for his connections to get him into a good Equine Hospital. Your Nestor had someone watching him like a hawk....someone who had his best interests at heart the whole time....not his winnings that week.

Sorry. I think this whole thing was unecessary.

Hello Fans,

I want to thank ALL of you for your so very kind posts, prayers and wonderful, comforting thoughts for Bart and I.

It was a very long, difficult and sad day. I tried sooo hard not to be overly sensitive. But I couldn't help but link someone's laugh as being the result of my loss. (It's just the kind of people I work with...)

But, I remained quiet.

At one point, I thought I heard Bart bellering from the back room, just like he would when he was too lazy to come see me. It was his way of getting me to come to him...and I always fell for it! Until today...

My breath was taken away when I walked into the backroom and saw one of his beds...I thought he was in bed. But, it was just the blanket that I had tossed aside when I had gotten his softer blanket to wrap him in to take him to the Vet's...the blanket was the only thing to leave the Vets.

My heart stayed behind...with Bart.

I miss my little man. I never thought I would fall in love at work...

I know he's in Hevvin. And I'm very happy about that...very thankful. But I'm trying SO hard not to be angry...

I love Bart and he has enabled me to grow in so many ways. I thank ALL of you for acknowledging his life and the importance, and humor, of his days. I thank you for loving him so...and for loving me. Comforting me. I love you all.

I wish you Good Night with the sweetest of dreams of our big bay boy followed by my little man as he tries desperately to search for fallen kibbles to snack on...

Angel Felix, please show my little Bart the ropes, okay? Chances are, you have a little stash of goodies hidden away somewhere, am I right? I would be sooo appreciative if you would let Bart in on the secret...xxoo...x

My dear little Bart, I tried to be good today. I only cried four times and I went into the bathroom each time so that no one would see.

I held your bag of treats and wondered why I didn't give you a whole bag at a time.

Leslie went shopping during her lunch to cheer herself up. She bought ANOTHER purse! She suggested I go to Gregory's and get myself one. Bartolli, I don't want anything new...I just want you.

Good night Bart. Don't be upset when I cry, okay? When you were here on Earth, I would say 'I love you' all the time to you. Now, at least for awhile, the tears are another way for me to say, "I love you Bart". Please don't be upset little man... I love you. xxoo...XO..X

Hello Famblee....

Home from Dr. Jeff's awhile ago.

Murphy has Lymphoma of the intestines:( He is home with me tonight, I am to call the Dr. tomorrow afternoon, after the radiologist has viewed the x-rays this evening.

Jeff said they can give him some Prednisone, which will make him feel better, and begin eating again, so that I can have some time with him...I'm considering that, but since the outcome will still be the same, I am not so sure I want to put he or me through more 'time', and the time bought is very short. I think they offered me that for 'me', and I'm thinking of Murphy.

There is also chemotherapy which the dogs respond to quite well, but Murphis Man is twelve years old this month, and sadly, his mama isn't made of so many dollars....he has had such a good life with me:) He has more toys than my own children had growing up...not really, but the kids will tell you that:) He has been a very happy doggy all these years...and for that, I am very grateful! For a puppy found in an alleyway in a dumpster, Murphy has done alright for himself, that is 'fer sure':)

Thank you so very much, everyone, for your prayers and hugs via here and my own email...

Lynne,

I feel for you, friend. I just went through a tough time with my kitty. Had she given me more time, I would have said enough is enough. She made the decision, and spared me that.

Could you TRY the prednisone, to see if it makes him a little happier camper? It might buy you some time to make a decision.

We are here for you. You and Murphy are so loved by all of us.

Hugs and prayers on the way.
