Barbaro Updates: 706

updates are now here.

Update 4136: More tracks enact a slaughter policy for their athletes despite the NTRA's reluctance to support the end of horse slaughter: Magna tracks enact slaughter policy, excerpt:

"Since the inception of MEC, we have taken care to protect the health and safety of [its] customers, workers, and equine athletes participating in activities at all of our facilities," Magna Chairman Frank Stronach said in a statement. "The goal of the policy is to forewarn industry participants who participate in the slaughter of racehorses that they are not welcome at any of our facilities across the country. I hope other racetrack owners formally adopt similar policies."

Update 4135: Off back to the races. It is a gorgeous fall day here although I would be kidding myself if I did not admit to missing Keeneland a little. Just a little!

Update 4134: Recently retired Lights On Broadway, galloping bridle-less: Lights On Broadway September Update.

Update 4133: One of my favorite mounts at Keeneland last year is running this afternoon at Keeneland: Taletobetold has the class edge, excerpt:

Although she typically flashes early speed, Taletobetold rallied from fourth last fall when she missed by a neck to Stylish Wildcat.

"I think that race showed she likes the course here at Keeneland," trainer Eddie Kenneally said. "She's been a very consistent filly. The timing of this race is very good, and she comes into this race in perfect shape."

Update 4132: Another crisp but gorgeous morning this morning at Woodbine. I had seven sets for Steve. Three went before the break and four after the break. Of those four, three went for some gate schooling. All went nicely. For my second set as I was starting my gallop I saw a loose horse come flying along the outside rail coming the wrong way. It managed to scatter the horses that were walking back after their gallops. One reared and deposited it's rider. Two loose horses were now running around. I think all was well. Joey, who was on the first horse, was taking the long walk back along the outside rail!

My horse for Anita (Terry Jordan) also galloped nicely. Just a lovely day to be riding horses.

We have a couple of runners this afternoon, so I will plan to return to the races. I am doing this update from the Jake Howard Center here on the backside. My laptop is broken and I need to figure out a quick fix!

Update 4131: Former Fair Hill horse, Adriano, who won the Kent Stakes six weeks ago, will be the favored horse in the Hawthorne Derby on Saturday as he competes against 7 three year olds on the turf. Adriano stands out in Hawthorne Derby.

Steve Haskins writes a nice article on Steve Asmussen's handling on Curlin.

"All the talk has been about Curlin and his earnings record and place in history, but few mention the brilliant and meticulous training job by Steve Asmussen."

Haskins Cup Countdown: A Time For Kudos.

In memory of John Hettinger please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! TGIF! Alex, thanks for the blue link to the story about Adriano, what a gorgeous colt he is. May each of you have a productive, but not too exhausting Friday. And may all horses and their riders come in safe today and throughout the weekend. Is it possible that I could be first two days in a row? Let's see....

TGIF everyone!!

Hoping each of you has a lovely day and great weekend.

Blessings to every one of you and those you love.

Let me third that - TGIF!

Clear and bright in the Downeast this morning. Looking forward to some outside time with errands and yardwork.

These last 2 weeks before the Breeder's Cup always seem to take forever, eh? I'll have to watch races online, I guess.

Great news late yesterday about Sherman. He is confirming what MaryS already knew. It's frustrating when others will not listen and acknowledge.

###Marg, it's not only frustrating when others won't listen (THEY are the experts, WE are just worried owners or caretakers) but when the "others" (the "experts") are also just downright heartless, thoughtless, and through their actions are hurting our animals. AND WE ARE PAYING THEM--princely sums, often.

That said, however, it sounds like Mary has found a good vet at last--and dear Sherman has "fallen into a tub of butter." The BEST thing is, HE has told his new vet how happy he is with her and what she has done for him.

His actions after she finished, where he put his head on her chest, speaks volumes. And her reaction, "You're welcome, buddy," says a lot about her, too.

###FRIDAY!!!!!! ;o)

Posted by: KAY at October 10, 2008 1:12 PM

I'll 4th the TGIF. It's chilly here, we've already had several frosts, but today we may get near 70 degrees....thank you God now I can catch up on the yard.

It is impossible when it rains everyday, as it has done the past week.

####
Anxious to hear from Mary S. how Sherman's night went. The good Vets are out there, but often we have to dig to find them. I want a Vet who will listen to me, and then listen to my hounds.

It's tough, because we have to relinquish CONTROL
And Lord knows, that's hard.

Safe trips on the tracks--to all this weekend. And may all FoB's find comfort and peace from their worries and issues.

Good morning FOB's. I am waiting for news on Nicanor.

Jockey Danny Boag retiring.

You're all asking, "Who the heck is Danny Boag?"

Danny, 45, has been a standout rider in the California Fair Circuit for 20+ years. Riding Thoroughbreds, Apaloosas, Arabians, Quarter Horses, and even mules. Considered a sensitive and competent rider who took good care of his mounts, he's been popular with owners and trainers, even though he never really pushed to hit the big time. Danny will retire after the Fresno Fair meet, which will close after this weekend.

He cites fewer mounts, smaller fields, more competition for mounts, and trouble maintaining his weight as he grows older as his main reasons for retiring at this time. His reluctance to move too far from his family and home base in Oregon kept him on the fair circuit all these years; delivering thrills to local crowds as he guided some of the finest of their classes around local tracks.

Danny plans to keep his hand in, possibly as an exercise rider or jockey agent.

There is a write up on Danny in the Sports section of today's Fresno Bee newspaper, available online at www.fresnobee.com

I wish him well, and thank him for some thrilling memories. I've never placed a bet on a horse race, but had I been so inclined, any mount of Danny's would've been a pretty safe bet on a lot of days. Good guy, class act, great horseman.

Mary S this had me in tears!

they took his halter off. Sherman was on his way out of there, and instead turned (and that movement is very difficult for a foundered horse...) walked up to her, and put his head in her chest. She looked at me a little surprised, then said to Sherman, "you're welcome buddy".

Prayers for our Sherman! And for you Mary!

JOE on FRIDAY for PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO HAVE BEEN TEARING AROUND LIKE THE PROVERBIAL CHIKUM---
****************************************************
Friday, October 8th... 111 horses on our ranch, which means 222 gunky eyes. Strong winds since yesterday morning, and many of our horses must wear masks. But even with those masks dust will penetrate. Big hills of dusty dunes have formed. Tree limbs down. I wonder which neighbor went to Papa Murphys Pizza, because their box landed in our yard. Litter clings to our fences. Tiny balls of horse poop rolled up against our house. Better Homes & Gardens have cancelled their photo shoot. Winds are suppose to last through Saturday. Later we could be 68 degrees. There are 75 shopping days left until Christmas...

Catching you up on things which need catching up. We have recently rescued 4 horses from Northern California feed lots, and all are thoroughbreds. A dark bay gelding we call Bill Lowe. A light bay gelding we have named Simon Says. An older chestnut mare and her new name is Gina Free. And an older dark bay mare we call Simone. Both Simon and Simone arrived on the same trailer. We are clever that way.

We said goodbye to Red Feather, and we hardly got to know him. We said goodbye to Lance Corporal. Also Ring Of Friendship, we called him Ringo, and what a wonderful horse. We said goodbye to Honor Grades, and we only called him Honor Grades because we were told that is the name of his sire. We never did find out his true registered name. Takin Candi arrived in Nebraska, Kelli Chrisman sent pictures, and this is the third horse Kelli has adopted from us. We said goodbye to Pickin Daisies, we called her Daisy, and she went to a training barn in Davis where she will be ridden for 30 days. Daisy will then be moved to her new home with a family in Lincoln.

We said hello to a three year old gelding from a race track in Los Angeles. We have named him Mr. Universe, because he comes to us wired on steroids.

We have had decent luck finding new homes for horses who live in other places. Below are 4 horses currently in Northern California. These horses are free, and I do the screening. I can also arrange transportation.

Below Top Left: She is pregnant, and 14 years old. She is a registered thoroughbred in foal to an AQHA stallion. This mare is due to foal in March, 2009. The baby can be registered and is Incentive Fund Eligible. She is current with all vaccinations.

Below Top Right: He is 16.3 hands, and 16 years old. This quiet gelding is a former lesson horse. He recently had an infected canine tooth removed.

Below Bottom Left: An older thoroughbred with an unsound knee. He is a sweetheart, and would make a wonderful companion to your single horse. A very gentle gelding who can never be ridden.

Below Bottom Right: She is 13 years old, and has had 6 foals. Because of pregnancy related health issues she can no longer have babies. She too would be a great companion, or just a nice back yard friend to hang out with.

If you would like a sight unseen thoroughbred delivered to you, give me a call at 530-383-2120. These horses come from ranch foreclosures or ranch reductions. They are also free, but depending on where you live there may be gasoline fees.

I would like to send out a special hello to an amazing family in Danville, California. Last week they accepted two sight unseen older thoroughbred mares into their home. The teenage son writes to say he feeds at six every morning before heading off to school. Twice now he has been late for first period because he enjoys their company. And each day after school he stops at a produce stand for carrots and apples. I am going to share with you the last part of his e-mail:

I want to know it all. When I am suppose to be doing homework I am on line learning about horses. I bought two books. These old girls are changing my life. I want to know everything about horses. I ordered them both special presents for Christmas. Wait till my parents see their charge card. Me and my old girls may have to come live with you.

Well okay then. Enjoy your bad hair day Friday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

###Mary S, I am so happy to read your update. I've been praying and keeping Sherman in my thoughts. What a champ he is and so are you. Don't be so hard on yourself about the other vet and farrier, you listened to your instincts and acted on them, it's hard to know what to do when our animals are in pain but you did right by Sherman. What a guy he is and what a gallant lady you are. Take care.

This weekend is Thanksgiving here in Canada and I am giving thanks for having all of you in my life and for all you do for the horses. God Bless you all.

Have a safe day everyone and may all the horses racing come home safe.

GREAT NEWS FOR A CHANGE !!!!

Magna Entertainment Corp. - Media Release

Sponsored by:
MECA, , ) (CA:MEC.A: news, chart, profile) announced today that it has recently formally adopted a company-wide policy promoting the humane treatment of racehorses. Under the policy, any trainer or owner stabling at an MEC facility who directly or indirectly participates in the transport of a horse from an MEC facility to either a slaughterhouse or an auction house engaged in selling horses for slaughter will be prohibited from having stalls at any MEC facility. The policy also applies to any actions related to the transport of a horse from an MEC facility where the ultimate intended result is the horse's slaughter.

Ron Charles, Chief Operating Officer of MEC and President of Santa Anita Park, commented: "MEC is extremely pleased to formally adopt a policy to further encourage the humane treatment of racehorses. We intend this to be one in a series of steps that will be taken in an effort to protect our equine athletes. Consistent with the long-standing vision of Frank Stronach and management at our racetracks, the policy signifies the Company's strong intent to deal only with those trainers and owners who have the welfare of racehorses as their primary concern."

Frank Stronach, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MEC commented, "Since the inception of MEC, we have taken care to protect the health and safety of customers, workers and equine athletes participating in activities at all of our facilities. The goal of the policy is to forewarn industry participants who participate in the slaughter of racehorses that they are not welcome at any of our facilities across the country. I hope other racetrack owners formally adopt similar policies".

MEC, North America's largest owner and operator of horse racetracks, based on revenue, develops, owns and operates horse racetracks and related pari-mutuel wagering operations, including off-track betting facilities. MEC also develops, owns and operates casinos in conjunction with its racetracks where permitted by law. MEC owns and operates AmTote International, Inc., a provider of totalisator services to the pari-mutuel industry, XpressBet(R), a national Internet and telephone account wagering system, as well as MagnaBet(TM) internationally. Pursuant to joint ventures, MEC has a fifty percent interest in HorseRacing TV(R), a 24-hour horse racing television network, and TrackNet Media Group LLC, a content management company formed for distribution of the full breadth of MEC's horse racing content.

Oct. 10 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

If you argue with stupid reasoning you end up being stupid. Expressing an opinion can run you out of bounds and into areas that are not yours to argue. And no one has any business matching wits with someone who hasn't a notion of honor.

Consider what good can possibly come from a heated debate with someone who is in it for the argument alone. When there is noise and insult, the reason is weak. Someone said ignorance is behind every argument---but let's not let it be ours.

IMO - send this news out - to other tracks and racing jurisdictions especially -

Note that there are 2 threads at the DB on this - one in the Racing folder and one in Anti-Slaughter.

This new multi-track antislaughter policy appears to go even farther than Suffolk Downs . . . using terms like "indirectly" as well . . . a HUGE antislaughter step by the industry.

Wonderful! excerpt from DB threads above -

"Tracks include Laurel (MD), Golden Gate Fields (CA), Gulfstream (FL), Pimlico (MD), Portland Meadows, Remington Park, Santa Anita Park (CA), Lone Star (TX), The Meadows, and Thistledown (OH)"

We can sure use good news like this during the Congressional hiatus . . .

Great news about Magna tracks, I hope Alex Waldrop is listening.

Rep. Wexler and Rep. Klein, both huge supporters of our bill came to Pure Thoughts on Tuesday to see for themselves the 163 horses saved from the Sugarcreek auction, including the foals born whose moms would have been slaughtered. They are more determined than ever to work for getting slaughter stopped - they met with us for awhile after meeting the horses and are truly great men to have on our side.

I am priveledged to be invited to attend a private retirement/welcome home party for Sir Bear - he won the Cigar Mile, Met Mile, Skip Away and retired a few years ago from racing at age 9. Now he is moving home to a custom made barn at his owner's farm west of Fort Lauderdale this Sunday. He is my all time favorite racehorse and I wish every thoroughbred could have owners like his.

Mary, if you have time please give us daily updates on Sherman. I think of him many times daily. Bless his heart and his new vets heart. ##Supposed to have thunderstorms all weekend. HORSES OF TIERRA MADRE ENDORSE OBAMA

CAVE CREEK, AZ (OCT. 10) – The 29 horses living at Tierra Madre Horse Sanctuary
have unanimously endorsed Sen. Barack Obama in his quest to become the next President
of the United States.

In a meeting of the entire herd, held here today, the issue was presented by herd
leader, Johnny B. Goode, an eight year-old Thoroughbred ex-racehorse. In his opening
remarks to the herd, Mr. Goode said, “It seems the two-leggeds are in the mood for
a change in their leadership. I’ve heard many of them complaining about the state
of things in their lives recently. There’s a thing called a “war” that seems to
upset many of them. They also seem to be concerned about that material they carry
in their pockets. They call it money. They don’t seem to have as much of it as
they used to. And from what I hear, Obama has some good plans to remedy that problem
while McCain just seems to talk about other things.”

“That McCain fellow is older than Obama”, said Moose, the herd’s elder statesman.
“He should be the wiser of the two. But that doesn’t seem to be the case. Obama
appears to be level-headed while McCain often seems erratic. That’s not the way
it should be, even when we’re talking about the all-too-often odd behavior of the
two-leggeds.”

Suzie Q, a large Thoroughbred mare, expressed concern about McCain’s running mate,
Governor Sarah Palin. “How could we possibly endorse a woman who has a photograph
taken of herself, smiling, kneeling next to the body of one of our cousins, an elk,
that she had killed herself? And I’ve heard she wants to have wolves shot to death
from helicopters! And let the polar bears die out! No, she’s surely not one we
can trust.”

The herd, outraged by the charges Suzie Q had leveled, decided on an immediate roll-call
vote. The vote was 29-0 in favor of Obama.

“I’m proud of these guys”, said Jim Gath, executive director of Tierra Madre. “They
took it upon themselves to do this. They really hope their endorsement will make
a difference. It’s funny, but when I asked one of them – Bentley – why he would
put his trust in Obama over McCain, he simply said, ‘It’s the eyes, Jim. It’s all
in the eyes’.”

Tierra Madre Horse Sanctuary is the ‘forever home’ to, at present, 29 previously
unwanted, neglected, injured or abused horses. It is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization
that depends on donations to keep its horses happy, healthy and well cared for.

NO LAUGHING

I am being innnundated by mice in my very, very old house. does anyone have a humane methods of deterring mice from dancing on the stove, etc etc?
I won't use those glue traps, any of the others evil killing ways.

Besides, there's a lot more where these guys came from....do not suggest getting a cat, because even though I revereve this species, most my my greyhounds consider them just one more juicy thing on an antipasto tray, or something being passed about on a festively garnished pewter tray by a 21-year old putting herself through law school by working for a caterer.

HELP!

Posted by: jonnagrey at October 10, 2008 8:36 PM

I would like to share with you something someone sent our rescue

"Rescued Hearts"
Taking care of rescue horses is something I do best,

I know because I've done it and I've surely passed the test.

The horses that I've brushed and fed, the cleaning I have done,

And all to watch a frightened soul stand dreaming in the sun.

My own horses I've neglected, but I tell them everyday,

That I love and cherish them, though a new horse has come to stay.

I know they understand this, for in their eyes I see,

The love that I have given them come shining back at me.

Some people think I'm crazy, while others think I'm great,

But very few can understand what really is at stake.

If I can love and help a horse to find a better way,

My own life is much more richer that I look forward to each day.

So now you know my secret, it is there for all to see,

The love I give, the life I save, I do it all for me

Good news about MEC...now, if we can get Mr. Stronach to donate about 1% of all wagering revenue to rescues, rehoming and sanctuarys, life might start looking up for our horses and those in the trenches fighting for them. But it's a start.

Posted by: Denise at October 10, 2008 10:37 PM

jonna, I used to have a shed in the back yard and mice would come into the house from the shed. No, dont use glue traps. They are not humane as they hop around in them for awhile. Cant do that with dogs as Chief got one stuck (I thought I put it where he couldnt get to) on the end of his nose and in his muzzle fur.It took hours getting it off. Cant use D-Con as it is fatal to dogs. I know it is not humane but I finally used just plain mouse traps. Of course, placed where Chief couldnt get to them like behind the ref. Good luck.

I almost let him go yesterday but he woke up having a good day and I was torn but decided to seize it and enjoy that bonus time with him. Today he's fading again. So unless something changes I'll let him go tomorrow. His vet will come to the house and Chessie will hopefully go peacefully outside in the afternoon sun. Prayers to everyone and their furrbabies....

Alex, hard not to miss Kenneland this time of year, it's gorgeous here. I'm going out about 5 in the morning to watch the early workouts. I"ll be thinking about you!

TAMME ~ blessings to you and Chessie, and I am sure he is very happy to have spent all these years with you...probably as glad for the "bonus time" as you were.

It is NEVER easy...

Thinking of you, Tamme. I just went through it. I have found that you can survive it, but it is not easy. Prayers and hugs on the way.

Hay, FOB's!

###
Am catching up from being away for a few days (prayer/meditation time that was wonderful).

###
I just found out about Mr. Bernie Rivers...please go to Jim's blog and read...and then pray for Jim and all the horses. Jim had to make an agonizing decision. That's all I'm going to say. Sherry, thanks for letting me know.

###
Prayers for Chessie, Lukas, all the other furbabies and humans who need love and caring...

###
Maribel, how is Hans???

###
Went to Quest last night...was asked to work on all the horses for the first time. Spent two hours with them and it was great...was able to work with a little boy who is enchanting...and got to give a big HI to my buddy, Madison (of the megawatt smile and sparkling dark eyes...). But the other two kids I usually help with didnt' come - the therapist canceled all the sessions (darn). But it was a good night all the same.

More later...am very tired, need some solid sleep.

###
Jonna, one of the drivers brought in a beautiful brindle greyhound named Vodka - who immediately bonded....she is such a sweetheart...and yes, she was rescued.

Jim, what an awful year you've had...you did all you could for the little man. Keeping you in prayer and hopes for things to improve. I wish you were not so alone up there on your hill...you know what I mean. Got caught up with your blog
page, but couldn't access the additional copy.

Thinking about you, dude.

COURAGE

From Jim Gath at Tierra Madre. Not good news. Mr Bernie Rivers has joined Barbaro:

"We couldn't save him. Sudden, terrible colic..........

He's running on the wind with the Great Herd.

Sad ol' day. Sad, sad ol' day."

We do what we can...and measuring the time left is one of the trickiest and most difficult things we do for our beloved companion animals....

Lean on us: we've been where you're headed.

Love those beautiful brindles. Shiloh was helping clean Heart's still open wound by licking the thermazine out....oy. He is such a dignified old guy, vastly insulted when I put a light training muzzle on him to prevent the full greyhound loving, slurping wound cleansing....sigh.

Rest in peace, beloved MR. BERNIE RIVERS, and may light perpetual shine upon you.

I am so very sorry that you weren't blessed with longevity, but you were well and truly blessed from the day you went to live with Jim Gath...and so was he!

You are dearly loved and so painfully missed...

Fobs...family...

just remember we are all here, we are family, we have a purpose in life, and Barbaro left his legacy and his unfinish tasks behind for us, we, the FOBs...to get done.

so prayers to my family...we are strong, we are compassionate...and we WILL ALWAYS GET IT.

God Bless Each Of You, and take care of our horses and animals.

Joanna,
if you don't want to kill the mice there are traps sold that simply "box them up"- they walk in for the peanut butter at the back of the trap, the trap tips back and the door shuts.

If you DO use this trap make sure to check it regularily- mice can die from starvation after one day without food (it's their high metabolism that gets 'em) so this kind of trap can be *much* crueller than a snap trap if it's not checked regularily. After you've had it set for awhile it's easy to forget that it's there.... and then somebody gets trapped, and nobody notices for a week... :(

When you catch them, drive them far from your home and let them go. If you release them in the backyard they will just walk back inside :)

When I had a massive rodent infestation last winter I ended up using snap traps, there were probably 50-60 mice and multiplying, in short order that was put to a stop. Snap traps break the back and kill instantly, although there are rare occasions where a smart one tries a paw first and gets *that* snapped... that did not happen once during my Great Mouse Massacre of December 07. I much prefer the traps to poison, which takes its time.

Use the no-kill traps if you're dedicated and have the time, if not I would use the method that does its dirty work the fastest.
