Barbaro Updates: 704

updates are now here.

Update 4127: Paulick Report explores further the issues of supporting the end of horse slaughter within the thoroughbred industry. A must read: INDUSTRY ORGANIZATION POSITIONS ON SLAUGHTER.

Update 4126: I heard about this this morning for the first time. I hope things can get fixed or my plans to winter in Houston may be up in the air: Hurricane Damage Stymies Houston Meet.

Update 4125: Another pleasant morning's work here at Woodbine. And a little warmer too! We had eight sets. Four before the break and four after the break, three of whom went to the gate for some schooling. All very straightforward. I then went to get on my horse for Anita (Terry Jordan) who is also galloping much more kindly as we get to know each other. I finished off the morning with lunch at the track kitchen (the food is pretty good at the track, and a lot cheaper than purchasing food outside the track) and a quick stop off at the Jake Howard Center (where I teach my cumputer class, which Jen mentioned in her blog today: ROCK STEADY.).

A very pleasant start to the day.

Update 4124: Two more horses are retired: Bustin Stones and Dreaming of Anna.

In memory of John Hettinger please keep calling and writing.

For Canadians: Canadian Horse Defense Coalition Call to Action.

Hiya, FsOB! Brrr, it's nippy here on the banks of the Thames this morning. I am girding myself to head outside to get the newspapers. May each of you have a safw & productive day! Can I be first this morning? Hmm, let's see....

###Did everyone read about Princess Rooney and what a lovely "auntie" she was to the weanlings after she was pensioned? I love reading about kind horses, and she sounded like a princess indeed. She had a job the instant she crossed over the Bridge.

###Midweek, "hump day," and hope all goes well for everyone. I must run a couple of errands and spend a few hours at the office.

###Safe travels to all (including me ;o) and a big thank you and KEEP WARM to Alex.

And a special "keep warm" to anyone who is experiencing "frost on the pumpkin."

I LOVE this time of year. ;o)

I love the comment and the video of Princess Rooney merely laying her ears back to telegraph her displeasure to some of her charges. She knew who was alpha--no doubt in her mind--and because of that and her kindness, she ruled her empire with a benevolent air...

Her races are awesome...love to see a racehorse pull away from the pack like that and just--as Lynne Brown would say--ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Please keep Sherman in your prayers. The new vet is coming this morning - I will be leaving soon to go out there.

Lord God - thank you for guiding, inspiring and directing Dr. Schroeder to Sherman's right and perfect care. Enable her to see Sherman clearly. Comfort Sherman and release his pain. Open the way for him to move forward in his recovery, and restore him to full, and vibrant health. Thank you God for the gift of Sherman. Thank you for the kindness of the FOB.

Kelli Hoffman created a site to help Sherman. Thank you Kelli, you are a dear friend to both of us.

Congratulations to the handsome BUSTIN STONES, and best wishes for a happy, healthy retirement!

###MaryS, prayers indeed. I forgot to mention prayers for those in need in my first post this a.m. (Not enough coffee).

As about the Pepto, too, as a second method of handling upset tummies. It worked for my horse when he was in "colic mode" after an incompetent veterinarian overdid the bute (prior to the colic--the bute slowed the gut action and that created the discomfort).

###Jonna, I haven't seen the videos of Princess Rooney, but I will watch them later today. I am still dialup at home but have highspeed at work and I do the video thing on my break. It is permitted.

###Thanks, Alex. You're wonderful.

JOE FOR THE REST OF US CRAZIES: WHERE WILL IT ALL END??????
***********************************************
Wednesday, October 8th... If you have recently sent us a letter and no reply came, please resend. All e-mails have been answered. When this website is down I have an extra two hours a day. More stalls cleaned. Laundry in the washer. Sports section studied. Fried potatoes with scrambled eggs. And all e-mails answered. An extra two hours a day is a gift. There is even time for David Letterman jokes from the night before. We love our DISH recorder...

I very much need the following to send us a mailing address: Courtney Cross. Justine Junez. Heather Knutson. Daniel Morales. Aimee Torres.

When this website is down the stories pile up. Heart warming tales of once doomed horses finding new homes. Horror stories of horses in terrible situations. Pick and choose, and I usually do.

I lost a filly. A thoroughbred only two, and she was going to be huge. Dark bay with white socks, and already 16 hands. She was freaking beautiful. Horse killer Wade Giles said come get her before noon on Monday. Horse killer Wade Giles wanted 40 cents a pound, which would be close to $400.00. I was late. No excuses. Actually there are 5 or 6 excuses, but none are excusable. I should have found time. The filly was instead sold to man who provides livestock to mexican rodeos. Yesterday I discovered she had been moved to Arizona.

Not to linger, but I also found out the tall filly was sold last year at a yearling auction in Pleasanton. She was taken to a farm and broke to ride. It was decided the filly would never have enough talent to be a race horse. Her owner gave her to a groom at the farm. The very next day the groom sold her to horse killer Wade Giles for $200.00. Horse killer Wade Giles was going to double his money with me. But I was late getting there.

There are hundreds of horses a week in big time trouble. Recent letters to Tbfriends say maybe slaughter is a good thing. Thin out the crowd. Dump the old and disabled. Keep the young and healthy.

I always write back and say if you could see what I see. Foals and moms. Two year olds and three year olds. Horses who just a few years ago would have sold for decent money. Now they are selling for 40 cents a pound.

In the month of September there were six nice event horses who came to us from six different training barns. Their owners no longer able to afford a horse.

In the month of September I found two do it all event horses at feed lots. One thing for certain... when an event horse is sold to slaughter, they all have 4 brand new shoes. I always wondered about that. Why go to the expense of new shoes when you are having your horse killed? A question for a bigger mind than mine...

Even in these hard times for horses, we have had to turn hopeful owners down. They are a missed payment away from foreclosure. No employment. No way to buy hay. There have been some scenes in my driveway. Jerry Springer should bring a film crew.

One mom had to borrow money for gasoline so she could come see us. And then she fails to understand why I would not let her adopt a horse. I felt terrible for her kids.

Strange, these days are. Hopefully we soon go back to how things were. Aunt Bea on the porch. Barney comes over for apple pie. God Bless the filly on her way to mexican rodeo. I would give anything if she could be outside my house, waiting for the old man to come with breakfast.

Joe

Posted by: jonnagrey at October 8, 2008 7:00 PM

I am sorry the filly went to a mexican rodeo. They are cruel beyond words. I think the cheering spectators will have a special place in hell. ##Chief is doing fairly good. He is getting spoiled more than ever now. I am his cook, maid, nurse, doorman and servant. He is worth it all. His vet said since his heart is so bad we or on borrowed time. Each day I get with him is a gift. Thanks for all yoles prayers and thoughts during his stay in the hospital.

Posted by: sandra at October 8, 2008 8:02 PM

Oh yeah, forgot to say Chief is getting many nilla wafers. For the first 3 years of his life all he would play with was a brick. wouldnt play with toys or eat bones just toted his brick around whereever he went. Finally his vet said to take the brick away as it was wearing his teeth down so I did. That was about 3 years ago and he never quit hunting his brick. Last week after he came home from the hospital I gave him his brick. I have never seen a dog so happy. He was overjoyed. He is back to toteing it around where ever he goes-like sleeps with it. He is a happy dog.

St James says to keep quiet, control your tongue--though no one ever has. Your boat may be huge, but your little tongue is a rudder that can turn a very big ship in the wrong direction. The tongue is like kindling wood that can set a whole woods on fire. Keep your tongue quiet, very quiet.

And then St Mark says to speak--speak to the mountain and tell it to be gone. Not only be gone but sink into the sea. A mountain of trouble needs us to use our tongues. Speak what you want and need not what you do not want.

There is a time to speak and a time to keep silence. These are the times that makes us who we are, what we are, and what we will have. Life and death are in the power of the tongue.

You say you are right and we are wrong. How do you know it to be true?

Hay, Gang. I've been feverishly trying every few days to catch up here. I am thankful I have a job now, but this is what happens. Not much time to stop in and say hello. I haven't been far away.

I miss my unemployed life very much.

Renee and all sisters and brothers of unemployment - RUN. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN. Getting back to work is exhausting!!!

I still pray for the fur creatures and their slaves every day.

ALERT - everyone who gives a damn about the slaughter of our beloved American equines MUST read the Paulick Report that Alex linked at the top of this page...warning, you will be pissed!

For example: "Agriculture Committee chairman Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) and ranking Republican Goodlatte both have been recipients of contributions from the NTRA PAC, most recently receiving $5,000 for their 2008 campaigns."

GEE, WHAT A SURPRISE...NOT!

###### been offline for a day or so - show Monday night took a lot of energy (filming went great; just heard from documentarian who reports the footage came out well) and yesterday was in recording studio getting work in progress on CD's for use by collaborators. So on line this afternoon after a time out, just catching up.

Rec'd this re the only horse in my virtual stable:

This notice is to inform you that one or more of your horses has worked out.

Your Comment: won w/ Prado 9/11/08

Date: October 8, 2008
Track: BELMONT PARK
Distance: Four Furlongs
Time: 49:34 Breezing
Track Condition: Fast
Surface: Dirt training
Rank: 13/34

I asked this before after her last workout about a week ago - is this a good time? Apparently her scratch the other day from the 7th at Belmont was, as I suspected, due to muddy track condition, not any problem with her. I don't know squat about training details/statistics, so please somebody fill me in whether this is a good workout. THANKS!

######## Thanks to Nancy who alerted me to Crazy Catlady after her win with Edgar Prado last month.

as I said - catching up on things after being away - here's yesterday's

Oct. 7 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

We get to know ourselves when we are alone. What may have brought us to this place may not be as important as what to do now that we are here. When we are with other people we listen to them, but in solitude we follow our own way. Great strength comes from the quiet and it prepares us for times when the sands run fast.

Solitude is never withdrawal but being with ourselves, learning what affects us, and what of it can be given to others. We learn how to be a good friend when our attention is not divided--a good friend to ourselves and a good friend to another who needs it.

It is hard to fight people that live like groundhogs.

Thought I'd pop in to say Hi to everyone. Saw an interesting article on MSNBC. Haven't finished reading it because I couldn't take my eyes off the picture: then figured out why!

Anyone who supports or supported the horses that were rescued after a double-deck trailer accident (heading for slaughter)will recognize the wee one in the picture instantly! :o)

Hello Everyone,

I can't believe how busy I was today - didn't even get to post this morning. So I wanted to jump in to see how everyone is doing and to do it quickly because we're in the middle of a nasty thunderstorm and the power might go at any moment. Sandra - that was the sweetest thing - glad you gave Chief his brick. I am hoping and praying that Mary S. will report good news about Sherman.

Have a nice evening.

INDUSTRY ORGANIZATION POSITIONS ON SLAUGHTER.

Most has not taken a position on the current legislation.

No position is like a vote for slaughter!

Transport for slaughter is illegal in California??

Hiya, FsOB! As I say at least once every week or so, Joe Shelton renews my faith in humanity, and usually when I am feeling most depleted.

I sure wish that I could have been at the KY Horse Park today for the unveiling ceremony. I reminded Brent early this AM about how John Henry got his steel-driving name (stomping his water buckets!). I sure wish that I could've met JH before he passed over last year; I would've even taken him some chocolate doughnuts. I hope that Harriette can post her observations about today's event....

#### To Lou Ann: Yes, I wish that you, Harriette, & I could've been together today to share Dutch Cocoa cookies in honour of John Henry!
Hello & welcome back to Margie in NM and Cheryl G.
To Mary S.: Thinking of you & Sherman today.
To Alex, isn't there a track in Baton Rouge, Louisiana? Would that be a possibility for you if Sam Houston doesn't open as scheduled?
To Sandra: Bless you, dear Sandra, I almost cried when I read about Chief & his brick! What a unique soul he has and how fortunate he is to have you as his human Mum. I have certain toys that I cannot discard that belonged to my Huskies who passed away some time ago.
Re. Erin Brennan's beloved MoMo: She was discharged from the hospital yesterday and is staying with Anne, Terry, & the boys.
To all of our FsOB who are observing Yom Kippur tonight, may the close of High Holy Days be blessed for you and your families. ####
