Barbaro Updates: 702

updates are now here.

Update 4118: Another monday afternoon and another internet class. I have to say it is fun getting back to a little teaching: Internet for First Time Starters at Woodbine.

Update 4117: Curlin worked for the first time on the Pro-Ride surface at Santa Anita Park this morning. In typical Asmussen fashion, it is an easy work: Curlin, Student Council Work at SA, excerpt:

"We just breezed him back in a maintenance move," said Asmussen. "We're going to show Curlin the patience that I think he deserves."

Santa Anita clockers caught Curlin's fractions as :13 4/5, :26 4/5, and :39 4/5. Several people came out to Santa Anita's Clocker's Corner at about 6:30 a.m. just to get a glimpse of the chestnut champion at work.

Update 4116: A crisp fall morning this morning at Woodbine. But a great morning to be riding horses for sure, if you wear gloves. I had a pretty straight forward morning, six sets for Steve and then the one extra for Anita (Terry Jordan). Two of my horses did a little gate schooling, and all galloped very nicely. Just a very pleasant morning's work.

The otherside of our shedrow was pretty upbeat this morning, after their double yesterday that included the stakes win of Mine That Bird. Good guys and great to see them have another big winner. Mine That Bird has now won three stakes in a row.

Jen wraps up the weekend's racing, and also includes a picture of me with the departing Chantal Sutherland and other cool pictures taken by Wendy: GOLD MINES.

Update 4115: Wendy took some great photos of me galloping at Woodbine yesterday morning. I will note though that the loose horse was not mine, but I do think it was a friend's!

In memory of John Hettinger please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, what great photos! I know that our FsOB who are fans of grey horses will get a big charge out of several of these pictures. Everyone please have a great Monday! Wishing restored health to Sherman, Lukas, Princess, Chief, & all of our four-legged friends who've been ill. Can I possibly be first today? Let's see....

Posted by: Robyn Hoffmann at October 6, 2008 11:06 AM

Great photos, ALex. I especially like the gray dapple you were on. I was at Keeneland yesterday morning for the early workouts and I must say I caught myself looking for your #4. It is beautiful at Keeneland, as you know. Saw several Asmussen horses training, as well as Matz's and Pletcher.Pletcher was there overseeing his bunch.
I had breakfast in the track kitchen. A very good morning.

Posted by: Harriette Brillianthawk at October 6, 2008 11:21 AM

Now if only Alex would tell us who the horses are! I liked the grey as well but I also liked that firey looking chestnut with hedges spelling out "woodbine" in the background too.

If anyone is interested, I took these photos from the races on Saturday.

Good morning, fellow Fans!

Great pictures, Wendy! I, too, wish Alex would identify the horses.

I hope everyone has a good week and I hope for improvement in the conditions of Sherman and all the 4-legged friends who are hurting. And I wish peace to all the 2-leggeds who are in need.

Wendy and Alex
Thanks for the wonderful pix to begin this rainy (something different for a change, cough, cough)

I was making Heart's Cream of Wheat this orning griting my teeth while hearing one of our local pol's commercials. I can zap through these out front in the living room, but the kitchen TV is a little b/w.

If only I could invent a little thingie that we could plug into our TV's that would detect and silence any and all political "messages", no matter WHO has "approved the message."

GR: Think of all the horses we could save. Think of all the Pols we could BUY? Think of getting our own Lobbyist for 2009? Damn...

Loretta going in for stitch removal today and Heart for removal of her extremely icky drain...
The serum is so sticky that it's like cement....no kiddin'. I keep washing it off, cover the area with this skin stuff that prevents the serum to stick in the hair...She's been wearing special "shirts" that catch most of the stuff...or licks it off...um somewhat constantly.

So what I want to know is:
IS HORSE SERUM FROM HEALING WOUNDS AS STICKY?

PEACE to us ALL...we need it prayers for Maribel, Anne Brennan, Her mom; Momo, BarbAZ, Stephanie & Rob & Tony, Sandra, CHERYLG---there are more, I just cannot think of them at this moment.

Have COURAGE. xxoo: j

Monday, October 6th...
I used the computer of a friend last night, hoping for new pictures on this front page to be shown. Three of the four slots below were cooperative.

I wanted to show you a picture of Hoist, a 17 year old thoroughbred stallion seized by Butte County Animal Control. We have three photos of Hoist, but none will load. He is a darker shade of bay, and very kind. With Animal Control Hoist is gaining good weight. Talk about longshots. All over Northern California there are nice riding horses for free. Yet here I am, on a dark and cool Monday morning, hoping to convince a reader of Tbfriends to give Hoist a chance. If you can help this wonderful horse give Barb of Animal Control a call. Her number is 530-538-7409. Tbfriends can help with shipping. Tbfriends can help with Equine Senior. I will bring you pizza. Wash your truck. Sweep your porch. Paint your barn. There is something about Hoist. His expression...

###Am I reading Joe at TBFriends correctly? Manny Phelps did not want to see a young filly butchered so he gave her to Joe for the price of fuel to get her to his place????

###Maybe the minds of the Congressman sitting on their ample butts can be changed the same way, with careful and patient KINDNESS (through gritted teeth and hidden clenched fists).

Posted by: KAY at October 6, 2008 5:25 PM

THE REST OF MONDAY JOE:
****************************************************
You begin to wonder, when is Northern California going to run out of horses? Five large stock trailers left for Canadian slaughter last week. 100 horses or so. 400 horses a month.

Horse killer Wade Giles recently saw 4 young horses in a field near Elk Grove. They were neglected. Horse killer Wade Giles knocked on the door and said he would give $200.00 for all 4 horses. The owner said okay. The 4 young horses had never before worn halters. Horse killer Wade Giles backed his stock trailer into the field, and soon the 4 horses were loaded, using the shrinking pen method.

The 4 young horses have been processed in Canada. What a crappy way to earn a living. Available unwanted horses are everywhere. But to go around knocking on doors is the lowest of lows. Soliciting the death of young horses. There should be a law...

There are dozens of e-mails saying with all that is going on in our world, with hungry kids and homeless families and house foreclosures and unemployment at record numbers. With all that is going on in our world, who is going to care about horses?

In recent months Tbfriends has received a warehouse full of clothes for a 12 year old girl who went to school wearing rags. Tbfriends has received gift cards to grocery stores for families in foreclosure. Gift cards for gasoline for our horse haulers. New winter coats for teenagers who live at a youth shelter. $100.00 in cash for Thanksgiving dinner, and I get to choose the struggling family who receives this dinner.

It boggles the mind how one little website can bring out the goodness of others. I understand how a horse can be a lifetime expense, while buying a gift card or a new winter coat is a one time deal. But it is horses who need help now more than ever.

A small thoroughbred filly at the feed lot in Wilton, and horse killer Manny Phelps says he got her from an auction company after she failed to receive a bid. The auction company gave this filly to horse killer Manny Phelps for free. She is a cutie pie, and follows you around like a puppy. Manny Phelps says give him $60.00 for gasoline. He does not want to see her butchered. The little filly came to us Saturday, and out to our south field she goes. She waits at the gate for attention.

Even certain horse killers are stunned at the number of horses available to them. Certain horse killers can pick and choose. We are very grateful for the little filly.

Joe

Top Right: Two adoptions yesterday, including Adrianne and her new gelding Ring Of Friendship. We call him Ringo.

Bottom Left: A few weeks ago I saw this gelding standing in a bare field in Vacaville. I was able to buy him for $50.00, and his name is Diggs. There is a racing tattoo which says Diggs is 8 years old. His back has caved from starvation, but he is recovering.

Bottom Right: Say hello to Royal Watch. He recently came to us from a fancy event barn. We call him Roy.

Where are you?
I mean we're usually on top of each other with TBFriend's posts...thank god for a laugh or two these days.

I just read the Dow went below 10,000 today. I think this country is going to explode/

ALSO: Why so many appeals for saving and/or cattle, "humane slaughter" for swine, beef cattle, dairy chickens?

WHY IS EVERYONE TIP-TOE-ING AROUND OUR HORSES...I have such a head ache now...why do i read the news

anybody in the Chicagoland area tonight, show up @ The Gallery Cabaret to be in the live audience of a show that's being filmed by a documentary film student who is making mois, my music and my activism, her class project! Dog-friendly venue; show starts at 7 pm and runs until the bar closes and they throw us out. Click on my name below for details. And those who cannot attend - please send positive energy as only the FOBs can do! I'll be wearing a Barbaro tee-shirt . . . and that trademark red hat. (saw some film clips from old flicks the other day and realized that hat is very Annie Hall-ish; and of course my eyeglass frames look like Woody Allen's . . .)

Posted by: CJaffe at October 6, 2008 6:56 PM

ps that venue is also smoke-free, as are all public venues in Illinois. (best thing govt ever did, IMO!)

Oct. 6 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Living is a little like a wedding--to make a deal takes only a minute, but to live it may take a lifetime. Many have not learned that life is not a quick trip down the aisle and if you don't find it to your liking you can start all over again.

A good marriage is one of adjustment and then readjustment. It is sharing the hardships and the growing and sweetening that are in the middle of hardships. Little can compare with faith and looking out for others. It is giving and receiving, and we know it is not something outside ourselves that makes life worthwhile but what we have in our hearts.

I will keep my word until the stones melt.

Joan, I'm so glad to hear you finally have electricity. Our adjuster estimates that we have about $70,000 worth of damage to our property. Our barn was completely destroyed, and that is a big chunk of the money. I can't wait to rebuild it and get our horses back home where they belong.

My beloved Lukas went to the Bridge at 5 pm today. He had a good weekend, even chasing a mouse yesterday and eating all of his treats. Last night we went for a short walk, he wanted to go. I am thankful for that. I do feel as if my heart will break as he meant everything to me. The sweetest boy.....Today he was so sick, there was nothing I could do. I hope Barbaro was there to help him cross......Lukas loved all animals. If anyone wants to see his photo, it is on my website:www.simplesite.com/cloverdale. He is on the Our Boys page. Thanks for all of your prayers over the last week, I think it gave him some extra time with me.

URGENT! On the DB:

Rescue truck has broken down.

Help needed to get the 5 yearlings off the KILL LOT. Rescue stranded and cannot get to them.

Here is info:

Horse Rescue Transport Stranded in Alamosa

Alamosa, CO - Denkai Animal Sanctuary representatives left late Sunday afternoon (yesterday) headed for Cortez to rescue 5 yearling and 2 weanling horses that are doomed for slaughter on a kill lot.

Representatives had a 4 horse gooseneck trailer loaded with 2 donkeys and 2 horses headed for foster homes in Cortez, a concept that helps to make room for these yearling babies in dire need at the Sanctuary.

1:00 am - Our truck, which was kindly donated by DCP Midstream shut down while we were driving on hwy 285 just north of Monte Vista, CO. We were stranded. The four horses and two dogs traveling with us were stranded as well and we weren't about to leave them. We managed to find a tow truck who kindly towed us into Alamosa, CO at a fee of $500.00, where I sit and write this plea.

Upon arriving in Alamosa, we disconnected the trailer and fed and watered all of the horses in a large lot across from our hotel, the dogs were able to stay with us, thank goodness for Super 8 allowing pets! We managed, thanks to the help of our board members, Bob Grube and Lori Delfs and the amazing CDOT employees to get the horses to a safe, secure pen with food and water for now.

The truck is sitting a the local Ford Dealership aross the road from our hotel room, the diagnosis is in: The engine is blown. Therefore, we no longer have a pickup to haul our horse trailer with, therefore we are not going to be able to save the yearling babies without some serious, fast help.

We have a truck headed this way from Cortez to pick up our trailer and the horses along with us, so we will make it that far, but still have to save these yearling babies.

This truck is a very vital tool for us, if we don't have it, we can't rescue, we can't get animals to the vet, we can haul our horse trailer at all.
We use this on a daily basis.

Here's how you can help:

If you have a connection with a dealership, ask if they will donate a pickup.

If you can contribute any funding towards getting a reliable pickup truck, please don't hesitate, we need some help!

If you know of any companies that would donate a truck they are no longer going to use, ask them!

Here is what would work best for the work and hauling that we are doing;

1 Ton Pickup Truck
Diesel Engine
Extended/Crew type for multiple workers
4 wd (our driveway is terrible in the winter/spring months with mud and snow)

You can contact us at: info@denkaisanctuary.org or call Floss on her cell at: (970) 217-1457.

If you would like to contribute we are a 501(c)3 not for profit organization. Contributions can be mailed to: 36710 WCR 126 Grover, CO 80729 or donate online at: www.denkaisanctuary.org.

Hi Famblee,

Jane,
I am so sorry about Lucas passing over, he was having fun this weekend and was so loved. He passed happy. Prayers being sent to all of you.

Eliz in TX,
I am so sorry about your barn, more important is that you and your family are safe and sound.

((((((((((Jonna))))))))))))))) Prayers to you fren.

Mary & Sherman, White Light and Love being sent to you. Sherman hunny sending you positive energy so you can heal.

The weekend at the rescue was a good one, we had an apoption Saturday, others stopped by to see the horses we have.
I have the best weekend ever, Hans has a bad back due to being jumped too much and is paying for it with issues that cannot be cured. We have to excercise him now to stretch his hack so we can help him all we can, he needs to bring his head all the way down. I will be working with him, I am so happy. All I feel from him is peace.
Yesterday for the first time I got on my boys back and walked him, no balance problems just complete comfort, it was like we were custome made for each other. I love him even more now, he was so good to me and took good care of me. I hugged, kissed and praised him for his excellent effort. We can't forget about our financial problems and have scheduled two fund raisers, hopefully it helps some.
I just found out yesterday there is a Lael Stables here in CT., not far from the rescue.

Alex,
The pictures of you are great! You look wonderful, Woodbine looks like a nice track!

Wendy, Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful pictures.

Hi sweet Barbaro, I love you my shining star.

Immediate help for the 5 yearlings. They are stranded at the KILL LOT. The rescue is stranded due to a total truck breakdown. DENKAI ANAMAL SANCTUARY FROM GROVER, CO. WAS ON THEIR WAY TO PICK UP THE YEARLINGS AND THEIR TRUCK TOTALLY BROKE DOWN.

IMMEDIATE HELP NEEDED TO GET THE 5 YEARLINGS TO SAFETY AND TO HELP THE RESCUE.
THE YEARLINGS ARE STILL ON THE KILL LOT IN CORTEZ, COLORADO. THEY WERE BEING SHIPPED TO A MEXICAN SLAUGHTER PLANT.

#####Dont know if anyone would be interested, but Jamie G. and I are planning a trip to Louisville and Lexington KY from 10/15,16,17.

If any of you are going to be in that area, we would love to meet any fellow FOB's.

Please let us know and we can arrange a time and place to meet. We are hoping to get to Churchill Downs Museum on 10/15 and drive over to Lexington to see Old Friends, Ky Horse Park, Our Mims and Keeneland racetrack for morning workouts & perhaps breakfast at the Track Kitchen there.

There are a lot of horse farms there and 3 chimneys would be on the top of my list.....Dynaformer and Smarty Jones and others.
Maybe a quick visit to Mill Ridge to see LaVille Rouge and Lentenor if he hasnt already left for Florida.
Good nite.. Ellie az

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, thanks for posting the horses' names. I knew that the grey would be a big hit, my late Father always loved those. I am partial to the chestnut TBs myself.

#### To Jane in CT: My sincere sympathies are with you today. Please know that the love that you & Lukas shared will last forever. Their love never truly leaves us. I'm going to try to locate his photos on the site that you shared with us. Please know that you are not alone.
To Joan Roya: Excellent news that your power has finally been restored!
To Jonna: Hoping that Loretta's suture removal was uneventful, ditto for High's drain being removed. I've only changed drain bandages on humans, never any on dogs. I'm sure that the canine's hair would compound the collection of the serous drainage.
To Kay: You & I shared the same thought, Kay, after reading todday's blog by Joe Shelton for TB Friends. Is it at all possible that Manny Phelps is developing a conscience? The young filly seems to have touched whatever may remain of (or whatever is being born in) Manny's heart.
To Elizabeth in TX: Bless you for your intestinal fortitude. I hope that all of your property can be restored as quickly as possible. And I hope that the barn is raised ASAP, too, so that your horses can come home. This must be so hard for your animals to deal with after such a devastating storm, Elizabeth.
To everyone who cares about Erin Brennan's family: It sounds like Susan/MoMo may be released from the hospital tomorrow (if it hasn't already happened). She has a candle group listed on Gratefulness.org and the group's name is MoMo. ####

#### To Ellie: You'll need to book a time with Three Chimneys, unless the farm's operating policy has changed. Brent & I were unsuccessful in getting to visit there last June. But we highly encourage you to see Old Friends in Georgetown! Michael Blowen and the volunteers there simply ADORE the FsOB! Wish we could be with you in KY soon, Ellie. Robyn ####

#### To Jane, Lukas was a spectacularly beautiful Golden Retriever! Are you the lady in the championship photo with him? What a lovely, lovely boy. Again, my sympathies to you, Jane. ####

Jane - I am so very sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you and Lukas. As someone said, you are not alone - the FOB are here.
