Barbaro Updates: 701

updates are now here.

Update 4114: Another fun afternoon spent at the races. We had two runners, a close fourth and a second. Both horses ran nicely without winning. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the win for the David Cotey trained Mine That Bird: Grey Win 4th Straight for Mine That Bird. We share a barn with David and he and his help have been super friendly since I arrived at Woodbine. Chantal Sutherland rode this winner, as well as the other stakes winner on the card and two more winners. Not bad for her last day at Woodbine. She is heading to California. All in all another fun day out.

Update 4113: Jen reviews the major races at Woodbine yesterday: WOW.

Update 4112: The Arc de Triomphe went to the super filly Zarkava: SUPER ZAR WINS THE ARC.

Update 4111: A nice and pleasant morning this morning at Woodbine. After yesterday's races and all the "pagentry" involved, it's pleasant to settled back into a more normal routine. I had seven sets for Steve. All went nicely, although my last horse, a nice 2yo, spooked away from some step ladders which were oddly lying by the outside rail at the wire, and jogged right into another horse jogging towards him. Luckily all was well. A set earlier the siren went off, a loose horse was galloping around at a good clip with his tail vertical, and a little later I learned that it was a friend who fell off and hurt her arm! Oh well, I think all will be well. My last horse was for Anita (Terry Jordan), and while he set off a little more settled (good) he did get kean towards the end as I needed to bring him close to the inside rail to pass a couple of horses. All fun.

Update 4110: A great day spent at the races yesterday. Our two stakes runners both ran very good races at long odds. Star of David finished third in the Grade 3 turf event for 2yos. He was the longest shot in the race. Storm Treasure, who I think ran in Barbaro's Derby, was a very fast closing fifth, beaten less than two lengths in the Neartic. Another sixteenth of a mile and who knows! Frankie Dettori did a masterful job of winning the EP Taylor on Folk Opera (Folk Opera Grabs Win in E.P. Taylor) and I am still amazed that Neil Drysdale can train such a longshot winner in the big one: Marsh Side Stuns International Stars.

There was also some great racing from Belmont where the 2yos were on display: Vineyard Haven Rolls; Unlikely For BC and Sky Diva Soars Past Frizette Foes.

Keeneland also had some good races including the Shadwell Turf Mile. Rahy's Attorney prompted the pace and looked good until close to the end, and was then headed by quite a few closers: Thorn Song Wire-to-Wire in Turf Mile.

From a historical perspective, the most important horse race though perhaps took place in New Mexico. Peppers' Pride won and has now become the only horse to have won seventeen straight races: Peppers Pride sets record with 17th straight.

Today the focus is on Paris, and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, which now may be without it's favorite due to soft turf conditions: ZARK ARC DOUBT.

Update 4109: Some great racing today, and a great day to be at Woodbine. I'll write a proper recap of events tomorrow. All I will add tonight is how shocked I am that Neil Drysdale can have a horse run at Woodbine at 30-1. Of course the horse then wins!

Update 4108: Off back to the races. We have four runners, two are in the stakes races. Hopefully a fun and busy afternoon. I would imagine there will be a big crowd on hand. ESPN is broadcasting from 4pm - 6pm.

Update 4107: Quite a busy morning this morning at Woodbine, and on top of a late night last night I am a little exhausted. I galloped six horses for Steve. One pulled quite hard, but the remainder all went nicely. I also galloped the one horse for Terry Jordan (Anita). He can also pull a little bit, but he did go nicely. He has a habit of stopping and looking on his way to the track. I guess if he gallops nicely I will just let him do what he wants to do!

Last night was a party at Woodbine ahead of the big races today. A fun evening spent with Jennifer (read her blog today for up to date news on today's races here at Woodbine INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM) and Wendy (ABR co-moderator, photographer and Better Talk Now fan).

Update 4106: Another big day of racing. Woodbine will be hosting the Pattison Canadian International Stakes later this afternoon. Canadian International Field Loaded With Talent.

Woodbine horse, Rahy's Attorney will be running against Shakis in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keenland: Shakis, Rahy's Attorney clash in Shadwell Turf Mile.

And Peppers Pride attempts to break the record for consecutive wins today in New Mexico: Baffert Says Record Counts For Peppers Pride, excerpt:

"I don't have the money to play with a lot of the big people", Allen said. "From a financial standpoint, this just makes more sense. We can get her beat. We know that. Our objective is to retire her sound."

ESPN will be covering the Lane's End Breeders Futurity, The Shadwell Turf Mile, the Neartic Stakes, the Canadian International, the E.P. Taylor Stakes and the Summer Stakes beginning at 4pm ET.

Just checking in to say hi to everybody. It's going to be a great weekend of racing on both sides of the pond. Two wonderful days of racing at Longchamp - Yeats runs today - and the big handicap at Newmarket, the Cambridgeshire, not to mention the Sun Chariot Stakes with Darjina, the favourite. I hope I get to see a rerun of the Canadian International as I won't catch it live. There's the Arc tomorrow and lots more. May all the horses running everywhere come home safe and sound.

It has been a sad and worrying few weeks for so many here. May you all have a good weekend.

WAAAAAAY off topic, but I am one American so overjoyed at the very real prospect that the arrogant, evil Mr. OJ Simpson may lose the rest of his life to a prison term. He will not have his children. He will not have the blue sky. He will merely grow old and be forgotten. And for him, I thin that's something akin to hell....

more later: prayer for all struggling, hurting, and MORE BIRTHDAY WISHES for MRS> BROWNE!!!!

(And Thank You to Kathy SC for alert all of us to this important event!!!!) (PS: how is BUCK, Nick and Sophie???)

Alex,

Can you find out if Lentenor is in Florida now?

Posted by: MJ at October 4, 2008 2:56 PM

Good Morning Fambleeeee

Jonna, offtopic back atcha...I am another!! Lived two blocks for the original "crime scene" and the horror that insued, nonstop traffic for months and months as residents and outoftowners stopped by the townhome and took photographs, gawked, picnicked, threw trash out of their cars onto adjoining homesites, blocked driveways, and then the fiasco that was the trial..it was just a nightmare. and absolute nightmare. So I am another American who is happy to know OJ is FINALLY where he belongs.

Finally. Rest in peace, Nicole Brown Simpson (what were you thinking???) and Ron Goldman, and I feel for those children and both families.

JOE FOR A WINDY, RAINY FALL DAY IN UPSTATE NY;;;;
***************************************************
Saturday, October 4th... The radio kept saying we were going to be blasted. Lots of rain, lots of wind. But so far nothing. Not even a taste. Only one leaf has fallen. The radio was teasing.

The other day I showed you an e-mail from a girl in Vacaville, and she needed a new home for her black mare Mona. Her letter touched many, and on Thursday Mona came to stay with us. A new home not far from the girl in Vacaville has been found, and Mona leaves us this morning.

Also leaving early today is the cute filly Takin Candi, who goes to live with our good friend Kelli Chrisman.

I was going to rake our fields, but rain tends to make poop disappear, so I saved a tank of gas on the tractor. Of course the rain never came, and now our fields look as if there might be 116 horses living on our ranch. Oh wait... there is 116 horses living on our ranch. Explains the mess in our fields.

Earlier this week came a sweet gelding from a feed lot in Wilton, still wearing his racing shoes. We have finally decided on the name Conrad. He looks like a Conrad.

At our front gate 11 year old Jordan, and she hands me a letter. I have permission to share with you the following: Since horses are in my day dreams, and since horses are in my night dreams, and since horses make my heart go thump thump with happiness, you can say I am hooked. I ride with a trainer in Davis, and she lets me stay late and read to her gelding. He likes the sports section and is a big Red Sox fan, just like you Joe. He also likes when I read him the comics. I would spend all night in his stall if my trainer would let me.

(I must go to Davis and meet this gelding. Another Red Sox fan)

At our front gate Michael and Holly, both students at Sacramento State University. They give me a $50.00 gas card for Chevron. Holly says: Give this card to your horse hauler who refuses to accept gas money. Tell her Holly says hi. She brought me a filly earlier this year, and I will always remember her kindness. By the way, the filly now has 60 days under saddle. I named her Sadie.

At our front gate a box of old halters, and 20 rolls of brand new vet wrap. No note, and thank you to who ever gave us this gift.

A cool Saturday morning, and later we could be 71 degrees. Smells like rain. Hot coffee is from Starbucks, and cinnamon rolls with melted butter were made by Raleys. 116 hungry horses are demanding the old man appear with breakfast. Enjoy your sure is getting dark earlier Saturday, and be sure to hug your horses. The Monkeys on the oldies station...

Joe

Arkansas Horse Council wants horse slaughterhouses legalized again

addressing only the property rights argument - You can't do whatever you want with a car when you are through using it - I'm certain all States have laws governing how one can dispose of one's property. So - taking the Devil's side here and assuming horses are property - all your property rights arguments are out the window, folks, because the government does NOT let people do whatever they want with their property.

just wanted to make that one little point, and suggest that all those in favor of ending horse slaughter and getting responsible, please support HR 6598 in the US House and ask your Rep to cosponsor it if he/she hasn't already. You can go to http:// www. americansagainsthorseslaughter.com to learn how you can help, and to join the grassroots citizens group.

Hi, Maribel. Still woozy here, but I'll be fine. This stuff takes forever to wear off, but I'm glad we have it--LOL!

GOOD NEWS - both horses involved in the spill at Keeneland yesterday that sent John Velasquez to the hospital - are fine - and yes, btw, there's good news re both riders, too. One brushed himself off and is riding today (can't remember name right now; they'll prob talk about it more on TVG). Velazquez, who remained stationary for about 15 minutes after he hit the ground, was almost cleared for release from the hosp where he was kept overnight. It was reported that remaining still for a time after hitting the ground, is part of Valesquez' training [to minimize spinal/cervical damage]. They were doing a few more tests before letting him go.

I was somewhat extrapleased to hear the commentator report (as an afterthought, at the very end of the piece) that the horses both were apparently fine, both got up; their 'legs got tangled' but no evident injury. OY

I saw a maiden filly (I think she came in third) in the first race (don't know what part) who didn't want to load into the starting gate. The camera caught it all, the handlers were kind and she did load, but there was a close shot of her face while she was backing up, beginning to rear, just said NO I DON'T WANT TO DO THIS and they made her go in and she was a good girl after that BUT the point is - seeing that beautiful red filly with a big white blaze, so upset and saying NO - I'm sorry I think I'm getting to old for all this, as I watched I wasn't aware of crying but tear were falling from my eyes - as now when I am typing this.

Still I will continue watching because I reslly love to watch horses. My dad used to watch Bonanza and Gunsmoke and all those great old TV Westerns, just to watch the horses - and I find myself doing the same thing, esp now that I don't have a horse of my own . . . having part of a shareboard 2 hours away just isn't the same!

BUT - my daytrips now can get longer - the amazing news I got yesterday that extends the limits of my house arrest, haha - still have 2 cats on daily meds, one once a day and one twice a day - but wouldn't kill 'em to be a little late or miss a dose (nothing heart or thyroid related) - but April, the formerly caged cat who has assimilated into the family following the loss of Foxy and Louise in short order - is NO LONGER DIABETIC - did blood work yesterday and as I suspected, due to her stress reduction, she no longer needs twice a day insulin. YIPPEE I AM FREE for the first time in almost a year - to be away from the house for more than 15 hours tops. That opens some doors I did't think I could knock on!

Looking forward to seeing Peppers Pride try for the record - and even moreso, seeing everyone remain vertical . . . TVG is covering her race, I think it is somethinig like 2 something Pacific

http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/erinbrennan

don't expect to hear from Anne via Caring Bridge for the next few days.

as of Friday, Anne Brennan's mom (Erin's MoMo) is in the hospital - luckily, her heart symptoms hit while in the waiting room at a doctor's office - talk about good timing~! Anne also revealed that it was Terry's 50th bday, but that because of this recent loss, the bash for Terry would be next year instead - and then she wrote -

[closing lines of Caring Bridge Entry]

You know I just realized that I made a plan for a year from now....maybe that is progress right there. [end excerpt]

I was gonna just copy and post that part - but the whole thing copied and I decided to post it all here - so here's what Anne posted at Caring Bridge on Friday:

Due to the fact that I've become very attached to you all, and the fact that I've created some unintentional chaos with my last couple entries....I am writing today so you all don't worry that I've wrapped myself around a tree or something. I'm not hiding or isolating either.
I have had something to hyper focus on which has indeed gotten me significantly out of my own way....unfortunately what is receiving my focus is that my mom (MoMo) is in the hospital. She was having chest pain while at the doctor's office~which really is a blessing, the fact that she was there in his office I mean. For a couple reasons~mainly that she couldn't just shrug it off and blame it on anxiety or whatever which then results in her never telling the doctor it ever happened. Thankfully she was in the waiting room when this occurred so her doctor was on the spot. And then, also thankfully, her doctor did an ekg~it was scary~and he sent it to the cardiologist that is within the same complex building. That doc disliked it even more than her regular doc and she went up to see the cardiologist, he did another ekg~even more scary~and then called an ambulance to come take her to the hospital. My mom was having a huge hissy fit that she had to go to the hospital..and that they called an ambulance (I was told by the nurse who called me that she wanted to drive herself or have someone come pick her up and drive her, she thought the ambulance was not necessary and didn't want the 'dramatics')And then especially unhappy that as the emergency contact, I was going to be called. She tried hard to talk the nurse out of calling, I am grateful she knew better and called anyway. I got to the hospital before mom did. This was about maybe 6:30, I stayed until 11, and by then she'd had several doses of nitro, as well as a nice combination of heavy duty drugs..she was completely out of it, I mean she was talking but not making sense, they really had her loaded up...but it did take away the pain, which was the whole point. They officially admitted her...but then yesterday morning when I went in and stopped to get her room number...she was still in the er cuz there were no available beds...until 3 yesterday. This morning she had a stress test...and flunked. So the cardiologist is now working on scheduling a cardiac cath hopefully Monday morning. She is stable at the moment, no pain..and not on all those crazy pain meds either. They have her on beta blockers and whatnot trying to get a good combination to manage....but still not enough information, and what they do have is crappy test results, to make a diagnosis...much less a treatment plan.
So that has been the past couple days, and will be the next.
I also want to share with you that today I had a meeting with the grief counselor from hospice, Alex. He stayed and talked with me for two hours. Not only does he get what I'm saying..he also 'hears' the words the way I am intending them to be heard. I don't know if that'll make sense to you...but to me that is really a big deal. We will meet again......
And very shortly my niece Jordanna will be coming over for me to do hair and makeup for tonight's homecoming. We had a test session Wed for her hair (right before I walked in my front door to the phone call from the cardiology nurse) She is always pretty...tonight she will be stunning.
Please say a prayer for my mom. I am worried, and usually I don't worry about her. I know that sounds weird, but she is really a strong woman and no matter what...whether physical or emotional...nothing ever completely kicks her butt. Not even now. But tests are tests, and the results are real and they are scary..at least the not knowing what is happening~is scary.
I won't be able to write for a couple days at least, so know that I am with my mom and taking care of what I can......
and I don't know if you all read the guestbook, but Rachel wrote an entry.......and in it she mentioned~~so I will too....
Today is Terry's 50th birthday. For so long I had thought I'd have a big party complete with black balloons and the grim reaper.....but that just doesnt cut it, not this year. He doesn't even want a few people for cake. So maybe next year I will have the blowout for him.
You know I just realized that I made a plan for a year from now....maybe that is progress right there. [end of crosspost from Caring Bridge]

so - prayers needed for Erin's MoMo -

###Windy today, lots of dust blowing but I rode (because I have a lesson tomorrow and have to practice ;o) and my OTTB was very very good. Of course he's been OT since 1998, but he still has "his moments" and there are times I swear he's not spent ANY time with me at all.

###I missed this morning's Keeneland replay of race 7 with Jamie Theriot and John Velasquez. Thank God EVERYONE was safe and the horses are okay too. A few days off for them, and lots of peppermints and carrots.

###Doctor visit last week was good. Blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol all good; I need to up the thyroid, but that's it. Even lost some weight.

:oD

###Good luck to all running, prayers to all in need. And CJ: Re the red filly who was scared, I'm sure she came away with a good experience under her girth and next time she will know what to expect. She had handlers and a rider who showed kindness and firm patience to remind her of what her job is.

I'm dedicating my day today to 153. Since I can't drive, (drug use!) my daughter said she would run me around for a while. We are going to donate all unused stuff, like the KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement) and other supplements to our local kitty shelter. She operates out of mobile home! She is crazy, but wonderful.

Then we are going out to the craft store to gather up some pretty flowers for 153's grave, which is out back.

It will be a good day, although a little sad.

Hi, Fran. Thanks for thinking of us. We got some beautiful things for 153's grave. I picked up a small wooden cross, not too big, and some plastic Lillies of the Valley, also small and dainty, like 153.

We decorated the cross and put her name on it. O.K. Her NUMBER! LOL It turned out really nice. I feel some comfort from that.

Here is your link. I voted for Jill Starr.

Oct. 4 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Questioning Aunt Nellie was an eye opener. Her face, some said, was like the wrinkled Black Hills but it was wreathed in smiles and mischief when we asked her most favorite things. She said quite simply:

"A full box of wooden matches, a jar of mentholatum, the smell of coffee..and I reckon any kind of fresh fruit."

"Young children were sent to neighbors to borrow fire..and when our legs ached E li si (Grandmother) rubbed kerosene on them to warm the muscles. The other things are just something I liked and still do. No, we didn't have anything, but we knew how to hunker down until the hard times passed."

And then she added, "People need to learn how to do that now."

Say to us if you can say it, that you were sent by the Creative Power.

Good Morning Famblee,
It's time for my weekly post. Because of my work, I don't have time to read much here during the week, let alone post; so, it's all at one time for me. lol Fortunately, I DO get to peek in once in awhile and try to keep up.

First, I want to let eveyone know I think about you all the time. When things get a little bit much to handle, you all give me a calmness and ability to take care of things. You are a source of strength. Thank You!

Second, Know that my prayers go out for all of you. Especially our furry friends who are hurting. Chief, Sherman (who only has 9 candles as of this writing) and everyone. I understand how you all feel and hurt and worry. We had to take our Princess (a purebred American Pound Mutt (wish I could get the AKC to recognize THAT breed lol)) to the emergency vet Tuesday night. She's ok, just a pinched nerve in her neck. It's terrible when they hurt.

Third, We have much to be thankful for. Saturday was a great day of racing. Longshots winning, lots of safe racing and best of all, a new North American racing record. Congratulations to Pepper's Pride and her connections! 17 races and 17 wins! An owner and trainer who want nothing more than her to be safe and sound.
I'm thankful that we're fighting the good fight daily. We have a multitude of "unfinished tasks" to complete. We get closer every day.
And, we are surrounded by Angels. Joe and Cathy Shelton, ShellyA, Barbaro, Alex, wonderful Dee, LynnLadeeattafens (Happy belated Birthday Fren!!), all of you.

Fourth, We have some trying times and have suffered some setbacks in our battles. Remember, we are at war here. Not a shooting war, but war nonetheless. Sometimes, like now, we need to back up (NEVER retreat) and regroup. Think of new strategies and fight anew. We have an economy that, for many, many reasons is on a downturn; we have a Congress that doesn't listen (lowest approval rating in history). So what do we do? We dig up change and support our Horses. And, we vote. As Daryl Smoliak has said, we need to remind those congress-people that they work for us! Let them know that if they don't do what we want them to, co-sponsor our bills, etc. then we will not only not vote for them, but will vote and actively support their opponents who will do the People's will!
Strenght, Courage, Integrity, Honesty, Openess, Love, Valor, Class and Dignity. These values and traits will see us through to victory. Without them, we will have no credibility and suffer defeat. Barbaro was never defeated, neither will we be!

Fifth, Remember, take some time to mend. When you're mad or tired or feeling defeated or just plain down and out, step back. Look at the sunset, hug a horse, help a friend. Recharge your batteries and then rejoin the fray. We all need to do that once in awhile. Lean on us, your famblee. We are here for you.

Finally, I just want to say I love you all. From the bottom of my heart, I love you. Grief may be the price we pay for love, but happiness and joy are the profits we get from love.

NO Horse left behind or Ever Forgotten!

Hello all. I thought this was a cool article. Shows how big it would be for racing if Curlin runs in the classic. There is a sad part toward the end though. I wish I could go. I'd love to see Curlin win it!

JOE FOR SUNDAY WHEN ARCHANGELS USUALLY STOP TO REST.
***************************************************
Sunday, October 5th...

Her name is Maddie Brown, she is 16, and lives in Vacaville. And at our front gate Maddie gives us two bags of Peets coffee.

Her name is Holly Machado, she is 17, and lives in Woodland. And at our front gate Holly gives us two bags of Starbucks coffee.

Her name is Rhianne Martinez, she is 15, and lives in Dixon. And at our front gate Rhianne gives us a sack of delicious deep fried apple turnovers, with just the right amount of grease. Those apple turnovers go great with our 4 bags of new coffee. Cathy and I hit the jackpot yesterday...

Clothes for the girl who loves Cope continue to arrive. They come UPS. Fed Ex. Regular mail. A pair of brand new size 6 sneakers left at our front gate without a note. The girl who loves Cope now has enough clothes to last until she is 105 years old. She is giving clothes to youth shelters, and also an organization that helps homeless kids.

Pony Boy drops to Number Two. Cope has become the Number One horse visitors ask to meet. Batteries in the camera of Rhianne Martinez went dead yesterday, after about 100 pictures of Rhianne and Cope were taken.

Animal Control in Butte County seized a 17 year old thoroughbred stallion, and he is a sweetheart. He is gaining weight, and a good home is needed. Hopefully tomorrow I can show you his picture.

Ring Of Friendship, we call him Ringo, has been adopted and he gets on a trailer later today. A perfect gentlemen, and we are sad to see Ringo leave.

On her ranch in Dixon, Jodi Tuft received a quarter inch of much needed rain. On our ranch in Woodland, 25 minutes from Jodi, we received one tiny rain drop, plop in the middle of my windshield.

Later today we could be 73 degrees. Only two fried apple turnovers remain. Ice cold orange juice is from Simply Orange. Alicia Keys on the cd player. Three cheers for the Boston Red Sox. Enjoy your autumn is a time for reflection Sunday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

GREAT NEWS!

Velazquez released from hospital
Oct 4, 8:03 pm EDT

Buzz Up PrintLEXINGTON, KENTUCKY (TICKER) —

Jockey John Velazquez, who has ridden more than 3,000 winners in his legendary career, was released from the hospital on Saturday.

Velazquez was hospitalized on Friday after his mount fell in the seventh race at Keeneland.

“He checked out of the hospital this afternoon and is scheduled to go home to New York tomorrow,” national manager of the Jockeys’ Guild Terry Meyocks said. “He is pretty sore, but all X-rays were negative and it is up to him when he rides again.

“He is going to rest up and hopefully be back riding soon. He will not be riding tomorrow.”

Aboard Tap Dancing, Velazquez was thrown from his horse after being unable to avoid a two-horse incident between Whacka Whacka and Rapid Man.

Velazquez was removed from the track on a stretcher and transported to University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Jockey Jamie Theriot, who also was involved in the incident, walked to first aid. He was evaluated and cleared to ride by medical personnel.

Sofies Lee, thank you for the for good thoughts for Chief. He is doing much better. I may be wrong but his stomach x-rays and CBC came back normal and I may have a clue on his illness. I found a half eaten big onion out under a tree in my yard. I told the vet and she said onions are highly toxic to dogs and can cause death. I dont know what really happened. Anyway f he did chew on the onion I paid $300.00 for the onion. I suspect neighbor kids (kids from Hell) threw it overthe fence as they like to tease Chief. In the past I ave talked to their mother but she doesnt believe in discipline. ###SophiesLee, Princess ma be a mutt but mutts are great. For years I showed Labrador Retrivers and many were champions (pets first at home) and I loved them all. But after I lost my last one I found Chief who is a shepard mix and yole know how I feel about him. Back to the onion. If it was the onion at least he is okay now. Tests showed enlarged heart and a heart mumer but he is 13. Saturday night they were worried about gastric torsion-thank gosh it wasnt that.He is giving to a leg left over from his stroke but he is still here.

For all the fans of LAVA MAN:

Lava Man is guest of honor at Santa Anita
The popular 7-year-old thoroughbred, retired earlier this year, will lead the post parade for the featured Cal Cup Classic. A filly, Romance Is Diane, is the favorite.

Bill Dwyre

6:20 PM PDT, October 4, 2008

One of the highlights of Sunday's Cal Cup day at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting will be the appearance of a horse that won't even run.

When the horses parade to the post for the $250,000 Cal Cup Classic, they will be led by 7-year-old Lava Man. It will be an honorary march for one of the most popular and successful horses, and a Cal-bred himself, in the last decade in Southern California. Lava Man was retired in July.

Lava Man was the best claim in thoroughbred racing history, being picked up for $50,000 at Del Mar in 2004 and handed over to Doug O'Neill to train. Running for owners STD Racing Stable (Steve, Dave and Tracy Kenly) and Jason Wood, Lava Man became a legend with victories in the three top Southern California Grade I races in the same year. He won the Santa Anita Handicap, the Hollywood Gold Cup and the Pacific Classic in 2006, the only horse ever to do that.

Lava Man also joined the legendary Native Diver as the only horses to win the Hollywood Gold Cup three times.

For that $50,000 claiming investment came a return of $5,286,706, and now, a nice retirement spot for Lava Man at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez.

Among those parading behind Lava Man will be four-year-old Romance Is Diane, who not only will be the first filly to run in the Grade 1 Cal Cup Classic, but was installed as the 5-2 morning-line favorite. Romance Is Diane has won twice on Cal Cup day, in the Matron last year and the Juvenile Fillies in 2006.

Romance Is Diane, who will be retired to broodmare duties after this race, is trained by Mike Mitchell and will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano. The second choice in the race, according to morning-line odds, is O'Neill's Mr. Chairman, who will be ridden by Michael Baze.

The card will feature 10 races, all for horses and fillies bred in California.

(This is TODAY'S 10th race...4:30 pm Pacific Time)

Hay, FOB's!

###
BarbAZ, I was able to see the pics...153...her face is so sweet - the eyes are saying so much...and the energy is beautiful...open to her presence because her spirit has much to say to you...much love, much caring...

###
Angel Dee, I love reading your e-mails. You are in my heart so...a lot so...

It has been a beautiful day here in Chester County and for some reason...for some reason...Barbaro has been in my thoughts today.

For all that is happening in our daily lives, for all the dramas that are playing out right now on the world stage...our faith, our courage, our determination to steward ourselves, each other, all life is being "tested". Keep your hearts open, send your fears to God (however one expresses their own spirituality), know that we can walk our talk and show the beauty that is in our own hearts...and that Love...Never....Dies...

All Love,
Padme A'Tea

Sandra, I'm guessing it is a lot easier to get bills through at the state level. Our horses should certainly NOT have to travel the way they do. We will have to get cranking again when the legislation is introduced to our new Congress, and hopefully things will be different!

####
Fran, thanks. 153 was just absolutely my best friend. She adopted me!

Good afternoon, fellow Fans!

It is most definitely Autumn here in the Downeast. Very cold temperatures and the leaves are spectacular. I was traveling for work a bit this past week and the colors are showing in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, too.

###Padme - The reason that Barbaro is on your mind today is that exactly 5 years ago his connections were starting to dream big after his Maiden win at Delaware Park the day before. He was impressive, even then..won by 8 and a half lengths.

Peace and prayers to all in need.

Barb, the memorial is beautiful. 153 will live in your heart forever. ##Having a thunderstorm that is rattling the windows. Chief has had his anxiety drops and soothing music is on. He is pretty nervous but re-acting a little better. ###I think next year we will have a new congress. I am voting against most all of them. Pelosi may not get to travel in her jet she just bought for several million. On the horse slaughter I am making a list and checking it twice.

Barb AZ. OMG, 153 is a tortie! My heart cat, Darcy, who is 16, is also a tortie, with the same "line" down her nose.........they are simply the best. Again, I am so sorry for you, it is so hard. But you know that she is no further from you than your last thought of her. What a darling. I often visit a website dedicated just to torties.

Lukas has had a good 3 days.......every hour is a gift with his prognosis. Today when I saw him carry his favorite toy outside like he didn't have a care in the world, it was so hard to believe he is as sick as he is. I am just praying for strength and treasuring every day. Thanks to everyone asking and praying for him, you are the best.

Fran, Lyn (Padme!), Jane and Sandra. I love torties. I didn't adopt this one, though. She picked me. It was a match made in heaven. Thanks for all your kind words.

Continued prayers for Lukas and Chief, Sherman (any word?) and for Janice and Barbi, and I hope I'm not forgetting anybody. Maribel, we are with you on your journey to Canada!

Dr. Dean Richardson was just interviewed at Oak Tree on TVG by Christine Olivares - said he hopes he never has so much publicity again, as he had as Barbaro's doctor - talked about all the fundraising for laminitis research, due to Barbaro. Anybody else catch this? Just a surprise to me, didn't know he was gonna be on, just have TVG on in the background and there he was!

###### Leaving for music in about an hour - getting cat chores done. Seems so strange not having to worry about "shooting" April! Couldn't find her all day; this morning she came over to get in my lap and was shocked to find somebody else (Franny) already there and she bolted away and I didn't see her again until just now, when I found her curled up inside a cat carrier that I keep open and available for just such a purpose. Her no longer needing twice a day insulin shots, is a real liberator for both of us!

Oct. 5 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

As a very young child I was left in the care of my mother's teenage brother while she worked in the garden. Inventive as he was, he tied a rock to my dresstail to keep me from toddling off. Needless to say, this was not acceptable and I shouted with rage.

My fearful mother came running from the garden and scolded her brother unmercifully--so he removed the rock and I felt terrible because he had been scolded and tried to get him to tie the rock again.

It became a family memory to laugh over--but it tells of a person's willingness to bear a burden. Are we supposed to drag a rock, bend under a heavy load, or carry the shame of something to make us stronger? Don't believe it. Look behind the rock and you won't find a caring uncle, but a deceiving idea.

I will not fall on the rocks. When I die my enemies will be under me.

LAVA MAN on screen now - he is gorgeous - ears up, shining coat - licking his lips [signifying relaxation/connection in horsey body language] - whoever is riding, has feet out of stirrups, relaxing - prefatory to the post parade for the big race about 15 minutes away - trying to stall so I can watch the race - I was smitten with Romance Is Diane the first time I saw her fly away . . . Fred will be hollering for me to leave around a quarter til, but this race is just too close for me to miss!

Virtual Stable sent me this:

Crazy Catlady was entered to race on October 5, 2008 at BELMONT PARK in Race 7 but was scratched.

Anybody know why? I noticed lots of scratches, I think the track was pretty sloppy . . .

been following her since she won with Edgar Prado on 9/11 and Nancy alerted me to her bc of her name...

and they're off in the Cal Cup Classic - may they all come home safe and sound - I'm rooting for the girl!

Hiya, FsOB! What a beautiful horse Arkava is! She is simply stunning and it's awesome that she won her big race at Longchamps. Eight Belles was probably sending her some positive energy.... Glad that John Velasquez was able to be discharged from Chandler Medical Center in Lexington. Wishing everyone ACN. Peace, RMH

### To Jonna, yes it IS pink blob weather. Brent even bought me a new, pale pink one at Linens N Things yesterday. It is made by Nautica and some of the proceeds go to the Suzanne G. Komen Foundation. I am still resisting cranking on the heater. B. also bought an electric blanket because we were miserable on Friday night. Hoping that High & Loretta are doing well, Jonna.
To Sandra, how ghastly to think that children would have thrown an onion over the fence to make Chief ill. Sorry that you are having a storm, I hope that his music and drops make him more comfortable.
To Jane: Fabulous news that Lukas has had a good weekend.
To Sofie's Lee: I am sorry that Princess is suffering from a pinched nerve.
To CJ: Great news about April. I am so glad for you both that her insulin dosage was lowered.
To Mary S.: I hope that Sherman had a more comfortable day today.
To Barb in AZ: Sorry again that you needed surgery. Thank you for posting the photo of your little beauty, 153. What a strikingly lovely kittie she was, Barb.
To Rosemarie, please let Stephanie know that the FsOB will keep her son Tony in our thoughts. May his tour of duty in Iraq pass quickly and without incident.
To everyone who cares about the family fo Erin Brennan: Please light a candle, if you have a moment to spare, for Erin's beloved "MoMo", Susan E. The candle group on Gratefulness.org is called MoMo. Thanks! ####

Romance Is Diane - holding on - oh no! Mr. Chairman nosed by her at the very end of the stretch. Michael Baze had to be 'very busy' to get Mr. Chairman past a 'game' Romance is Diane - they're saying she didn't have the best trip -

this is really sweet - Lava Man's trainer is the trainer of Mr. Chairman - they're saying he wouldn't have had this horse in this race except for having Lava Man there for the parade - (hope I got that right) - and now I gotta go!

The photo of 153 is lovely!!!! What a pretty kitty!
I am a huge fan of tortoise shells! When I was breeding my own kitties.....the mom was always a long haired tortoise and the male was always a persian orange.Tortoise shells are supposed to be the smartest and persians have a very mellow disposition so you end up with the best of both worlds! Jimmi Hendrix had an orange daddy and a tortoise mother. My favourite was my tortoise I named Pansy. She had markings that when she looked up at you her face looked just like a pansy!!!
She used to put her paws around my neck and rest her little head on my shoulder. We had a tree by our back door and she would sit in the tree until I came home and jump on my shoulder to come in!!!!

Anyway...not to bore anyone BUT your 153 was adorable!!! We are so blessed to be given these sweet souls for their brief time here on earth!

We're all here loving your 153!!!

I am so happy to read that Chief has recovered!!
We worry when you don't post!!! Those bad kids! What are the parents of todays children thinking??
They need to teach discipline and values and caring???!!!!! I'm disappointed in the human race in general!! As if our governments aren't bad enough!! I'll keep praying for an awakening....
Thank God Chief is OK now!! A narrow escape???
Email me your email address at maribel@execulink.com ????? I don't seem to have yours and I don't want to lose touch with you and Chief.
Praying your night is peaceful and Chief has sweet dreams.

We're almost at Wednesday.Only a couple of more days with the babes !!! They are so funny!!!
I can tell each one by their cry.I'll miss them!!!

We just finished a HUGE turkey dinner here. Our Thanksgiving feast!!!WE are all STUFFED!!!!! I'll have to starve for the next week!!LOL

HUGS and love to ALL who are still awake????
