Barbaro Updates: 700

Update 4105: Casino Drive, who impressed in only his second lifetime start by winning the Peter Pan Stakes, is now back in the US to make a bid for the Breeders' Cup Classic. The plan is to make a start within the next couple of weeks: Casino Drive arrives in California.

Off to the races!

Update 4104: A cool and crisp morning this morning at Woodbine. Horses love this weather. Riders perhaps not as much and we did have one loose horse this morning as Dominic parted company! I had eight to ride. A couple were a little tough galloping, but not too bad. I did take three to the gate for a little schooling. I saw Neil Drysdale a couple of times, and nearly ran him over coming home on one of my horses! The rider I noted yesterday who was taken off in an ambulance. She spent the day in hospital, was still there this morning but may be being discharged today. She suffered some kind of back injury I think, but I assume if she is leaving hospital so soon it's not critical. Fingers crossed!

Update from Penny today at timwoolleyracing.com:

What a nice crisp Friday morning. I have just a brief update today from a very short conversation with the trainer. Little Bubble Gum is doing fine and staying sound which is really great news. We are looking forward to getting her to the races. Tim is on his way to the Meadowlands tonight with Vicar's Tune. I'm not sure what sort of race it is but he is a tough bugger and hopefully he will run well. Tim also has Ms. M.V.P. who is a first time started making her debut in the last race at Laurel Park today. She has grown up so much since coming to our barn from the Two Year Old in Training Sale in May. We will get to see a little of what she's made of today. Now that the yearling sale is over hopefully I will get some more updates from Tim Woolley racing.

Update 4103: Keeneland's fall meet opens today with two Grade 1 stakes: Keeneland hoping to buck dipping handle trend.

I had a pleasant afternoon at the races. I met an anti-slaughter activist and we hung out for two to three hours swapping stories and information. We will plan on doing some work together. I then caught up with Jeannine Edwards, and we went out for an early dinner. Very cool to catch up!

In memory of John Hettinger please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! Ah, Keeneland in October. What a lovely memory, thanks Alex. I told Brent last weekend that we should try to get down there for the Columbus Day weekend in 2009 (assuming that the economy hasn't totally tanked by then). TGIF!
May all of our four-legged friends who've been ill have a much better day today & a healing weekend. Can I possibly be first today? Let's see....

For Debbie L.A. (or anyone else that could help):

Enjoyed your post from "Insideracing"(?) from John Pricci. But I could only go to the Part 2 article. What is the link for part 1? I'm sure it was posted, but I can't seem to find it.

Part 2 was very well written and I have added that site to my favorites. Like the stories and insight on all subjects at the sight. Like The Paulick Report too.

Thanks for the info.

Oct. 3 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

The first crystal clear morning after days of blue mist is like music after a long silence. Even the cool air does not dampen the spirits of domestic animals and those that live in the woods.

A young bobcat in prime coat wanders along the rock ledge in full view but unaware of interested eyes. No doubt he hunts for field mice and that explains why the barn cats have stayed close to home.

We have not felt the extremes of oncoming winter, but time will insure it. Meantime, adjust, adjust. Don't be taken by surprise. Prepare for change and the unexpected within change.

Our people possessed remarkable powers of concentration...and I sometimes fancy that such nearness to nature..keeps (us) in touch with unseen powers.

Go Smarty Go - racing babies

I just learned that this two-year-old son of Smarty Jones had to be vanned off the track with a possible fracture after winning a race at Belmont week or two ago - around September 20 or 21.

Is anyone following this story to know how this promising youngster is doing or what the problem was?

I thought I had found a link at the Bloodhorse blogs that had a follow up; but I couldn't locate the reference for some reason. Tired eyeballs, I suppose...

I pray he's okay. I've been hoping for one of Smarty's offspring to show up. Maybe not at two years old, though - I still have problems with that.

Hoping Nicanor continues to takes his time, grow those bones, build that muscle, get over any awkwardness... I can wait just as long as he needs. Glad he's in good hands.

Please tell me that Go Smarty Go will not be retired to stud. If TB racing is to have a future, horses that break down so early in their careers should not contribute to the gene pool.

Posted by: redshadow at October 3, 2008 10:26 PM

margie in NM, would you post tomorrow about Peppers Pride if you hear how she does.

Posted by: sandra at October 3, 2008 10:29 PM

Redshadow,

Meaning no disrespect, I believe you might be jumping the gun a bit. At that stage in his career, a breakdown was more likely due to immature bones than any sort of breeding deficiencies. This horse was a BABY - 30 months old - at the time of his injury; and should perhaps have been given more time to mature - even though this race was on turf.

I've often thought it was very fortunate for Curlin that he had issues as a two-year-old that kept him off the track. I'm hoping Nicanor will be a similar champion for similar reasons - let 'em grow into themselves!

It is unlikely that he will stand at stud after winning only one race; but any decision on that should certainly not be based on this injury.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd as you know you take me to where angels walk! As Angel Dee says "It is AFFIRMED!"

Holding hooves, hands, paws with the entire Barbaro Nation!! Prayers and positive healing thoughts continue . . . . always!

Today while at the deli counter I "educated" the delightful young lady who waited on us about us "FANS OF BARBARO", who we are, what we do, where to find us, and who inspired us!!

The young lady has two little girls and they live next door to a farm where there are two horses and three donkeys. The little girls on their own have been taking great delight in gathering up the apples falling from an old apple tree on the property, then carrying their buckets of apples to the horses and donkeys, they "get it"!!!

always with love,

Hiya, FsOB. I hope that John Velasquez gets a clean bill of health following his fall today at Keeneland. He is certainly in good hands at the Albert Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, KY. May everyone here enjoy "ACN" and have a great weekend. May all horses and riders be safe.

#### To Jane, I hope that Lukas had a good day today.
To Tamme, likewise, I keep Chessie in my thoughts.
To Jonna: I hope that Loretta & High continue on the path to recovery. Guess what? Tonight my robe known as "the pink blob" comes out of the closet. It's quite nippy here on the banks of the Thames & I am resisting turning on the heater!
Hello to two of our FsOB down in SC: Lisa in Mt. Pleasant and Kathy. Great seeing you both here today. It's been nice to see lots of our FsOB here this week.
To Joan Roya: I sure do hope that power has been restored to your neighbourhood in Houston!
To Lynne Brown, the Ladeeatthefens: A most joyous birthday to you, dear lady! And have many, many more.
To Barb in AZ: Goodness, I didn't know that you were having any surgery this week. Please hang in there, Barb! We are all with you in spirit.
To everyone who cares about Erin Brennan's family in Delaware: Susan (AKA Erin's beloved MoMo) was rushed to the hospital from her doctor's office due to chest pain. She was admitted as an inpatient. Postings from the DB. Sorry, I get notifications over there, and I meant to post here too. I am in overwhelm and not doing a good job of keeping up.

"I was with Sherman Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday was a difficult day. I upped the banamine to 750# dose in am and 500# in pm. Thursday was a much better day. He was eating and moving better. I used Healing Touch, essential oils, and a homeopathic preparation called Traumeel. His eyes were bright. I got more peat moss, and the purina wellsong low starch. I didn't think he liked the low starch (Acco) I was trying to switch him to over the past few days, and he might eat better with something else. I am going very slow though. He doesn't need any other upsets. He ate much better, but I think that also has to do with him being more comfortable with a higher banamine dose. His stall is so deep and soft........ When I went to feed him before I left, he was lying down in the stall. He was sweating on the "up" side only....... what? Sherman usually doesn't sweat much. No temp, looking for his food, got up easily. I called the vet - no concern "he is probably just hot......" guess she didn't hear me say he doesn't usually sweat - in 100 degrees.

I wish I could be with him all of the time. It is a 24/7 job - intensive care. Pam is not set up for this........ I will sort it all out somehow. Thank you all again for the prayers. It is one day at a time - hour by hour. I will be out there with him this weekend."

Mary

Latest post to respond to how Sherman is today.

"I haven't seen Sherman today. I was with him Wednesday and Thursday. I will go out again tomorrow for the weekend. He ate better, and seemed to feel better on Thursday.

Pam said this morning he ate most of his food - not all..... same thing at lunch. He was standing in the stall more today. He is bedded heavily with peat moss. She gave the banamine this morning and this evening. If I could be with him 24/7 I would. This is one of the hardest things I (or Sherman) has had to go through.

I would like Sherman out of the shoes now. He has had 12 days - he really doesn't not seem more comfortable I feel like I am searching for the best for him, and haven't gotten there yet. It is so difficult right now. Please say a prayer for him and for guidance. I don't know why I don't trust the vet and farrier - some comments I have had have reaffirmed this feeling. It is the most difficult thing to watch him in pain, and to think the vet might be wrong, or I am not doing enough. I am trying with everything I have and know.... again, if someone out there has a thought - please email me.

I am not able to accept my horse has to stay in pain for weeks - months. I keep searching. God bless us both. The vet continues to say it is not that bad - she doesn't know why he is so uncomfortable - that, I am beginning to understand, speaks volumns.

Thank you for asking about Sherman. Please keep him in your prayers"

P.S. I am looking for soft rider boots. If anyone has some to loan, or purchase used, please email me.
