Barbaro Updates: 698

updates are now here.

Update 4099: While I remain extremely disappointed with the NTRAs position on horse slaughter (H.R. 6598) this might be interesting: NTRA: 'Safety' Train to Leave Station.

Update 4098: A pleasant morning this morning at Woodbine. We had seven sets, four before the break and three after the break, two of whom went to the gate. It was a bit drizzly, but warm enough. All my horses went nicely for an easy going morning. I then went over to Anita's (Terry Jordan) and got on my one horse there. He also went well. Just a very straightforward morning.

Jen writes a very cool story about a very cool young lady, the last story of her entry today: GIRL WANTS TO HELP HORSES. It begins:

Her name is Yael Gottesman.

She is just 17-years-old but she's determined to make a difference when it comes to eliminating the slaughtering of former racehorses in Canada.

Update 4097: My long range plan for this "project" was to finish it by the end of this year and return to England. I have decided, for a variety of reasons, to continue for one more year. The current plan is to return to Houston for the winter meet at Sam Houston Race Park and then to return to Woodbine for next year's meet.

In memory of John Hettinger please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! Well, finally some great equine news this week - Alex is staying in North America for another year. Hallelujah! Alex, I am confident that all of the FsOB will be as thrilled to read this as I am. The horses of North America still need you!

May all of our four-legged friends who have been ill have a comfortable day. And I wish all two-legged FsOB a safe and productive day. Can I be first today? Let's see.... Peace, RMH

#### To Jane, I hope that Lukas was able to get more comfortable as the evening progressed. Thinking of you both. Please note that Alison left a note for you late last PM; one of her dogs has had some experience with the disease affecting Lukas.
To Mary S: Such a relief to see that Sherman had a better day yesterday. ####

Wow...this is the first website I read every morning when I wake up...I was hoping America would be blessed with your presence forever! I'm glad you're staying another year!

Good morning, fellow Fans!

Like Amanda, this is the first (of many!) stops I make in the morning. (Aw, heck, I'll admit, it's my homepage on MY computer!) Alex, I thank you for your dedication to the horses. And I thank your family and friends in England for allowing you to extend your stay with the colonists!

My positive thoughts to all who are in need to day.

I, too, am glad to know that the web site will continue on for another year. Let's hope by this time next year the federal legislation we're all fighting for to protect horses will be something we saw passed by Congress many months before and the site will continue on to deal with the individual horse issues (racing safety and such)and just because we want to.

Prayers for Jane & Lukas, Sandra & Chief, Maribel & Hans, Jonna and furkids, Barbi M and Barb (loss of 153 kitty). Again, if I've missed anyone, please forgive me, I don't get to read all the comments. But I do pray for all collectively.

####GM....on DB thread #28838.1 TIMEX....is there anyone with interest to give him a home. If a new home is not found very soon, the owner will have this horse put down. Please, dont let this happen to him. He is a grey, 14yo. Seems to be adaptable to different situations and sounds like he wouldnt be too much trouble.

He would be a good companion horse, if anyone is looking for that. And the owner is not asking for any money, just that he be given a good home to live out his days.

Thank you for checking out this thread.

Everyone have a great day.

Alex....thank you for giving us another year to accomplish our goals, and continue giving to Barbaro's legacy ,both together and individually in our own ways. This community means so much to all of us and we truly appreciate your dedication to maintaining it in such fine fashion and allowing us to grow and branch off in so many ways. Those of us who were not horsemen before Barbaro have learned so very much...its all out there...like kids in a candy store, we can pick and choose and learn both the good and bad like black licorice and chocolate bars.

We still enjoying hearing your personal updates, what you choose to share. Puts us in another place if only for awhile. How is your book coming...you haven't mentioned it in a while.

Good Morning, Famblee

Alex, am happy to know you're staying in North America for a while. It is hoped that before too long, during this next year of your stay here, the bill before Congress will be passed, there will be a cohesive effort to create a network of rescues across North America for horses who need a stayover until they find a forever home, that racetracks will all become safer, that the NTRA will become an ally once again, that the industry as a whole will become responsible to the horses, both in breeding programs and for retirement programs, that all other breed representatives will do the same, and that this terrible economic condition will drastically improve so that no horse, man, woman or child will be left behind.

Thoughts and prayers for all those suffering losses and sadness

Hello Everyone!!
Just a quick update!
Monday, Sept. 29th, we received this email message from HSUS -

Hello!

There was an amendment that was added to the bill while it was in Judiciary that triggered possible Agriculture Committee jurisdiction. The bill was sent to the Ag Committee so they could look at it and waive their jurisdiction over the bill. Then the bill would be sent to Rules and then to the House Floor.

However, due to the bailout bill situation taking up so much time and resources, the House will not be addressing HR 6598 this year. We anticipate it being re-introduced at the beginning of the 111th Congressional session in January 2009.

Thanks so much to you and your troops for making such a valiant effort. We will be back and we will prevail.

Thanks -- kelley

Kelley Dupps
Grassroots Outreach Coordinator
The Humane Society of the United States

Unexpectedly, on Monday, the bailout bill did not pass as everyone thought it would. Although it is a long shot, every day that our gov't is in session there is hope for our horses.

1) Please continue to put pressure on your reps to vote for HR6598 in the event this legislation does come to the floor for a vote.

2) With the election coming up in November, make sure you elect legislators that will allow this to pass next year. Do your homework, find out where your candidates stand and let your voices be heard on this issue. With the right people in office, we can prevail.

3) Continue to spread awareness about horse slaughter. As we've all found out, most Americans still do not even know this exists. The more people that know, the louder the outrage will be.

Please understand that there is a very slim chance this will happen this year. Nevertheless, we must stay organized and keep on fighting whether it be for this year or to be ready for January!

Thanks again for all you do.........together we'll prevail!!

##### update on Adam LaCosta, 22 yr old son of Lisa, a co-worker of my musician friend Dawn who always helps with the requests I send her re campaigning for anti HS legislation. Sharing email from Dawn:

Hi CJ,

You are the best! And so are your friends. Thank you for the prayers. The surgery went well. The doctor was able to remove all of the tumor. The fear was that this would affect his ability to walk. Not too long after the surgery
he was moving his legs. The doctor thought things looked good. We won't know the results of the pathology for a couple of days. But I do believe that all of these prayers helped and I can't thank you and your friends enough.

We still need a miracle though. The disease tends to go to other places in the body. He has had surgery on his pancreas and some other areas too throughout his young life. So I pray that God will send a miracle and show the way to
finding a cure. And I am thrilled that you are part of the miracle that we experienced today.

Thank you - and Thank You God!

Dawn [end of email]

Thank you all - and calling on any of you Reiki healers to tune in, now that you know a little more about his condition - repeating from yesterday's pre-surgery message:

"He has a hereditary disease called VHP. He is the youngest person to be affected by this. He has had numerous surgeries and probably will have more. This disease makes lesions in any part of his body and those lesions have to be removed."

Yesterday's surgery involved the spine [hence the worry about paralysis] and previously, the pancreas and other areas.

Again thank you all and keep up the good thoughts for these good ppl.

Oct. 1 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

What person does not hope for a spiritual experience that will connect him with the inevitable source of all good? What person does not hope for a touch to open his stony heart to understand his own potential? Who has not fallen prey to a mountain of misinformation and to the belief that there is no justice in the world?

While the world of events whirls and spins and shocks the rural soul, the sophisticated person of broader experience says that is the way it is, and that is why we act the way we do. But that very opinion propels a person headlong into the whirring teeth of absolute destruction. Who will hit the button? Who will stop this swift descent? It is a personal responsibility, a very personal responsibility, and who can do it?

You can dictate your terms. I am your prisoner, and must submit. but I am still a man, the same as you.

Film Showing to Benefit Equine Health Research
by: Edited Press Release
October 01 2008, Article # 12814

A private showing of "The First Saturday in May," the award-winning documentary from the Hennegan Brothers that profiles the connections of six Thoroughbreds, including Barbaro, on the road to the 2006 Kentucky Derby, will be held at the historic Kentucky Theatre in Lexington Oct. 14.

The screening will be followed by cocktails and dinner at nearby Portofino restaurant.

Proceeds will benefit Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, the nation's leading source of private funding for scientific research specifically to benefit horses.

Appearing at the event will be the film's producer, John Hennegan, equine surgeon Larry Bramlage, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, of Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, and several of the film's stars, including trainer Dale Romans.

Tickets are $150 per person, which includes the movie and dinner. Seating is limited to 200 people.

"The First Saturday in May" debuted at Truly Indie theaters in approximately 20 cities around the country in April. The Hennegan Brothers donated 25% of Truly Indie box office receipts to Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

This is a example of how our congress works! Got this email today.

Do they know anything?

October 1, 2008

Dear Ms. Nichols,

Thank you for contacting me about animal issues. I'm honored to represent you in Congress. Your opinion is very important to me and my priority is to provide Iowa's Second District with the best representation possible. It is estimated that in 2006, nearly 105,000 horses were slaughtered for human consumption mainly destined for European and Asian countries. Currently there is only one plant operating in the United States that slaughters horses which is located in Illinois. However, recent court action in that state has threatened continuing operations. In 2007, similar court action shut down two plants which were located in Texas.

During the 109th Congress, a bill to limit the use of Federal funds specifically for the approval and inspection of horses for slaughter for human consumption passed the House of Representatives. Recently, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008 was signed in to law which would also ban the use of appropriated Federal funds for the use of inspection and approval of horses for slaughter for human consumption.

Another bill addressing horse slaughter, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, H.R. 503, was also introduced during this Congress. This legislation would permanently prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption. This legislation is currently being considered by the House Agriculture Committee. Should this legislation come before the full House of Representatives, I will be sure to keep your thoughts in mind on this important issue. Thank you again for contacting me about this important issue. I encourage you to visit my website at www.loebsack.house.gov and sign up for my e-newsletters to stay informed of the work I'm doing in Congress. I am proud to serve Iowa's Second District, and I am committed to working hard for you.

Sincerely,

Dave Loebsack
Member of Congress

YES Very sad, funny thing is I had faxed and called the aide and told them the horse slaughter plants had been closed, and that the horses were going to Mexico and Canada. When I got that letter I called and ask, where did you put all the information I sent you on this? Did you read it?
I was so upset!

We need to clean house in DC, my reps Bonner has been in for 43 YEARS, he went to DC in 1965. And he is so pro slaughter. My hope is to remove him this year.

**************************************************
Wednesday, October 1st... The following e-mail came on Sunday, and I am showing you word for word:

Dear Joe... This is so hard to write. I love Mona with all my heart. She is black and 21. I am writing cause I need help. My dad says I have to get rid of Mona. I looked for a job but I dont have a car. I am in high school. I am so sick to my stomach. Mona has been the one bright spot in my life. My boyfriend turned out to be an ass and my family life is a mess. Mona has always been my rock. She listens and she understands me. I dont want Mona to go to a livestock auction. It would truly destroy me if anything ever happened to her. Joe can you help me? I will do anything you ask. I dont know how your rescue program works, but can you accept Mona? She is loving and low maintenance. She is in Vacaville and she has to be moved by October 1st. This is my phone number if you can help me...... My friend told me you get these requests all the time cause of the economy. I know there are horses losing their homes cause people are losing their homes. I dont expect you to ever call me. But my love for Mona controls my life, and I had to try. Thank you.

I like to keep track of numbers, and since September 15th Tbfriends has been asked to take 128 horses from private individuals.

This e-mail came on Sunday from a man in Las Vegas: I find it disgusting you would choose to spend your money saving horses when there are homeless children starving on our streets. You are not Bill Gates. He gives his money to people who need it, not on worthless livestock.

This e-mail came on Monday: Joe I saw your picture on the internet, and you look just like Jerry Van Dyke.

(oh swell... Jerry Van Dyke is 80 with a giant nose. Thanks very much for sharing.)

This e-mail came on Monday: I adopted a horse from you two years ago, and my parents would not allow my picture to be shown on your website. But now I am 18, and I would love your readers to see me and my mare. I love her so much. Can you come to Red Bluff and take our picture?

This e-mail came on Monday: Do you remember me? We met at an auction in Petaluma, and I bought an old thoroughbred mare for $25.00. You gave me two bags of Equine Senior from your truck. Tomorrow I am bringing 20 bags of Equine Senior to your ranch. I was so grateful to you that day.

(yesterday the 20 bags of Equine Senior was sitting at our front gate. Thank you very much for thinking of us)

This e-mail came yesterday: Any chance I can meet Sandra Bullock? I hear she comes to your ranch all the time.

(we have never met Sandra Bullock. Chat room gossip which refuses to go away)

This e-mail came yesterday: I have 4 senior citizen horses and I just lost my job. Unemployment checks will barely cover my house payment. I know you are swamped with unwanted horses, but any chance you can help me? My daughter went to your ranch once and brought you a cheesecake.

This e-mail came yesterday: Every morning I look forward to who is on the oldies station.

And this came from our friend Jennifer, and she is hiking in Idaho: You and Cathy would be so jealous. I just ate potato pancakes with real butter and fresh strawberry syrup. You should see the wildlife. I now know what heaven is.

Enjoy your first day of a new month Wednesday, and be sure to hug your horses. The Supremes on the oldies station...

I'm giving another shot at helping the many, many, many horses seized in western New York a few weeks ago. These horses were are mostly TB broodmares who were being boarded. The weather is turning there and the hay man is doing a really kind favor - only $4 a bale if we buy an entire truckload. We need only 170 more bales - just $700 more. If you can send anything, here's the link to the post with the payment information:

URGENT-hay drive for seized horses in NY

Thank you!

###yes Alex very interesting from the NTRA,but not enough. They are donating money to Goodlatte, and he is pro.
I wish I knew Waldrop was in St Pete,I would have been there to speak with him .Yes fans are pissed. He is right about that. But if they really care,go one step further and follow Suffolk, have a zero tolerance for slaughter.Like you said, disappointed is the word .
At least the horseman came thru with a negating letter. In the coming year,it will become clearer.Who are the good guys(Zito,Motion, etc)And who are the Bairds of the race world.

Carol Nichols:
So glad to see your Rep is up to date. Bet he's really excited that we're pulling out of Vietnam, too......

Jonna: when you're down and troubled....come here to your frens.

Joan Roya and Elizabeth Tx and Mary S: your courage and unflinching devotion to the horses humbles me in the face of all you've been through recently.

Alex:

The Hevvins are filled with happy horse squeals and whinnies tonight with your announcement that you're staying. All of us here in Equine Hevvin thank you, on behalf of those who can't speak for themselves.

Cheers,
Angel Felix,
celestial exercise rider and master of ceremonies

YES WE CAN get this bill passed. Hay, we might have 435 brand new reps in January who saw how wise it is to listen to constituents after all!

###For several weeks I have clicked on Jen's blog link when Alex mentions it in his updates. I do NOT understand her writing, the purpose of the blog--and I cannot access any of the articles he cites.

There is NO story about a girl who wants to help horses, when I click on it today.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Inquiring minds.

KAY - you have to scroll quite a way down Jen's page to get to the article about Yael...

Hay, I'm hanging in there, just incredibly exhausted. Not sleeping. Grieving takes a lot out of you.

Will try to post tomorrow.

Thanks, all.
