    Barbaro Updates: 686

    updates are now here.

Update 4044: Very sad to not have the explicit support of the NTRA: WALDROP’S WAFFLE.

Update 4043: This is a very interesting adaption to the claiming rule in California, designed to protect owners that give their horses a needed break: Non-claiming rule takes effect in Calif. on Saturday.

Update 4042: Larry Jones received a 7 day suspension and a fine of $500 for his clenbutorol positive in June: JONES SUSPENDED FOR CLENBUTEROL POSITIVE.

Update 4041: Fall weather here at Woodbine. We had eight sets, five before the break and three after the break that went to the gate for some schooling. Having been at the races last night (we did not have any runners, but I went over to "socialize" a little) I was a little tired which made the morning a little longer! Thankfully my horses went nicely and it was an incident-free morning. Not so for others as one loose horse came flying down the backside, going the wrong way, as we were stood in the gate. Another horse sat down in the gate, almost like how a kamel would sit down. Not too funny, but amusing to watch. All was well.

Update 4040: An intriguing idea to encourage more international participation in the Kentucky Derby for next year: British Race Provides Path to Derby.

The Maryland Racing Commission has approved a ban on steroids: Maryland Latest State to Ban Steroids.

Commentator, who at seven years old is as good as he has been, will be an overwhelming choice in the Massachusetts Handicap on Saturday: Commentator takes thrill ride north for MassCap.

In memory of John Hettinger please keep calling and writing.

For Canadians: Canadian Horse Defense Coalition Call to Action.

    Comments

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, how cool, thanks for bluelinking the story about the KY Derby Challenge Stakes. I'd not remembered correctly that Canonero II was the only non-US based horse to win the KY Derby back in 1971. (My first trip to the KY Derby was in 1972.)

May some substanial assistance get into TX and all of the states affected by Ike and post-Ike rain and wind. My cousin in Louisville was without power from Sunday until last night, believe it or not.

    #### To Mary S.: Thinking of you & Sherman. I hope that he & his stable mates have the water restored today.
To Lou Ann in PA: My thoughts to your neighbours whose GH passed on earlier this month. ####

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyK, Sky, Genny and the rest of the glorious, charming gang in
    Equine Heaven!

    For them:

    MORNING POST SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:

Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. Please do not call the names in red on the attached list because they are already co-sponsors. We now have 80 co-sponsors which is great!! Now is the time to put pressure on those that have not yet gone “red”. The more sponsors we have, the stronger we’ll be when the Committee reconvenes and when HR6598 comes up for a vote on the floor.
Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. It is not necessary to answer complicated questions or try to explain the bill. Sometimes "less is more"!!
ALSO.....VERY IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE CALL MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE AND ASK THEM TO 1) PASS THIS OUT OF COMMITTEE WITHOUT AMENDMENTS AND 2) MAKE SURE THEY ATTEND THIS COMMITTEE MEETING TO VOTE FOR PASSAGE
We are Barbaro’s voice....let it be heard.
    Thanks,
    Shelley and Deb
    Americans Against Horse Slaughter

    Cheers,

since I missed yesterday, here are Harriette's Brillianthawk's daily Cherokee Devotionals for yesterday and today.

    Sept. 17 Cherokee Devotional

We all know the difference between right and wrong. Even without teaching there is an innate knowing that reminds us when we have overstepped our right or someone else's.

Every time we prefer not to keep a law or a rule we say it was put in place to punish us. But it really says to go this way and you will be protected, like driving the right way on a one way street. But natural laws are for our good as well. They are reflections of spiritual laws and should be revered.

Respect for ourselves and for others covers a multitude of rules. Akin to love, it saves a person from himself.

When people come to trouble it is better for both parties to come together without arms, to talk it over and find some peaceful way to settle.

    Spotted Tail
    Sioux

    Sept. 18 Cherokee Devotional

We are conditioned to stampede. Heard the latest? Then run! Run on the inside even when your body is perfectly still. Run up your blood pressure because what you see and hear is not fair-not in keeping with what you have always believed.

Things are not always going to be the way we think they should. They never have been and they are not likely to change this week. But listen, be glad you know the difference. And be glad there are others who agree with you, but don't plan on that making a big difference in the way the world thinks. Plan to go on thinking fairness-- it is the seed that will eventually produce.

Osages have talked like blackbirds in the spring.

missed being here yesterday - was glued to the Jud Comm webcam all day, and when they finally got to HR 6598 and AGAIN nothing happened, I was so disappointed I didn't want to "be" with anybody and stayed off line all day.

Am still extremely optimistic, we just have to beat the clock! (anybody remember THAT TV game show???) Keep doing what we've been directed to do . . . will advise ASAP when we learn exactly when Committee will reconvene for the markup. Stay tuned . . . .

    Paulick Report -

"Innocent until proved guilty" is still a good way to conduct ourselves in our comments, whoever we are discussing.

When I consider the records and reputations of some of the accused, it truly seems as though there might be some deliberate sabotage going on in an effort to level the playing field - not by establishing fairness and enforceable regulations and controls, but by instead splattering everyone with the same stain. This is the, "If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me," mentality that I once thought only existed in schoolyards and congressional hearings. (Remember, too, the mysterious incident in which several of Jones' horses were released from their stalls and one slightly injured. There does seem to be a pattern of deliberate, targeted mischief developing here that I hope has not been overlooked.)

If such sabotage is occurring, it is utter cowardice as well as deliberate and criminal defamation! This increases the dangers to horses and jockeys, and casts the entire sport in a dubious light; and I hope Thoroughbred Racing can somehow ferret out the wrongdoers without causing further harm to those who are trying to run their horses cleanly.

I am simultaneously heartened by the widespread cooperation with efforts to ban performance drugs and tighten controls on animal cruelty, and appalled at seeing a sport I have enjoyed for almost half a century destroying itself from the inside.

I don't have any answers, but I pray some can be found - and soon - before the people who would see this sport condemned have their way.

Thank you, Alex and company, for the articles both yesterday and today; and for all the good work you do!

    Deirdre

Went to City Hall today to meet Congressmen Jo Bonner staffer Bryan Parker.

My husband went along and he said I did well, When we arrived no one was there, and no one else came.

So I had Mr. Parker all to myself for an hour, he didn’t know anything about the bills nor anything about horse slaughter. Had to start from the beginning and that took along time. Gave him a cosponsor list, the 2 papers Alex wrote on slaughter and the unwanted horses. Animal Angel’s paper on the transport of horse to slaughter, the white paper from Veterinarian of Equine Welfare and Dr. Hogan’s house testimony. The papers were three inches thick. He listened to me, asked a few questions, and we talked.

Good thing I had an hour had to start with the states closing down the 3 horse slaughter plants, Belgian owned, no taxes, and shipping to Mexico and Canada the transport, it was a lot to cover. Told him we are a grassroots movement and had nothing else on our agenda.

Also we are not PETA, and the Cattlemen Association, Turkey farmers, Pork producers and Chicken farmers need not worry. He said he was glad he had breakfast before I showed him the pictures of horse slaughter. Thanks to Daryl.

We also talked about the price of horses selling for 40 cents a LB and $20 dollars a LB overseas. And the big money in it to pay the lobbyist in DC. About Sen. Crags and the hole on HR 503 and the New Bill HR

All and all I think it was a good meeting, wish I had had his name before I could have faxed the information, before talking to him.

He assured me he would read all the papers and he would make sure the papers would be given to Rep. Jo Bonner. And he said if this bill doesn’t get to the floor soon it’s gone!!

He also asks why we are not talking to the Governor and our state Rep’s. I ask him how is that going to stop the transport in to Mexico and Canada? I was very com, cool and respectful. He is coming back next month and I will be laying in wait for him! LOL!

DEBBIE LA...as to the question about contacting the Governor or State Reps: this is quite interesting since during yesterday's brief consideration of our bill, the "pros" were trying to turn it into a states' rights issue, saying that each state should be voting to outlaw slaughter. However, this doesn't hold water as a theory if Mr. Parker knew nothing about slaughter until your meeting...heck of a weird coincidence, I guess!

Makes you feel useful. Hot coffee is from Folgers, and stale ding dongs were made by Hostess. Later today we could be 77 degrees. Marvin Gaye on the oldies station.

Bringing you up to date... I recently told you about a girl who lives in a group home for troubled teens, and on a visit to our ranch she fell in love with horses. Yesterday in Orangevale was her first riding lesson. There is a game plan in place. By next summer she will have her own horse.

She found a job at a mall, working 16 hours a week. Her school work completed each day. She volunteers at another youth home, helping younger kids who have problems. In exchange for her weekly riding lesson the girl must clean tack and help with blankets on and off this winter.

I would like to send a special Thank You to a riding instructor in Orangevale. All you are doing for this girl. You have turned her into a new person. Her confidence grows larger each day. Horses are changing her life, and you provided the opportunity for this to happen.

My dial up computer speakers are making a drilling into concrete noise. Driving me crazy. The old dog Jewels is deaf, but he has left the room.

A special hello to Natalie in Oakland. I answered your letter Natalie but it was returned. Cathy is mailing you a halter and a racing shoe. I wish you the best with your older dog.

It is Thursday, and the list of chores is longer than my long nose. There is employment at another ranch where the big bucks are earned. A trip to the feed store because we keep breaking poop rakes. Enjoy your they are down to 5 on that talent show Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses. 98 shopping days left until Christmas.

    Dear Nancy,

It's the best possible news! The Bush Administration has just announced it intends to withdraw its plan to strip gray wolves of their endangered species protection in the Northern Rockies.

What a huge win for wolves AND for hundreds of thousands of online activists like you who share the credit for this amazing victory!

Let me bring you up to speed. Last March, the Bush Administration declared the Northern Rockies' wolf population "fully recovered," then it handed off responsibility for the wolves to Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. Just as we predicted, a bloodbath ensued, with 110 wolves slaughtered by state agents and hunters in as many days.

NRDC, Earthjustice and 11 other conservation groups raced to court and won an injunction that put a temporary halt to the killing until the full case could be heard. We fully expected to fight a drawn-out courtroom battle in order to win a permanent victory.

But thanks to the Bush Administration's surrender, that battle will NOT happen. Instead, the wolves of Yellowstone and the surrounding region will remain protected by federal law.

That means Wyoming, Montana and Idaho will NOT be allowed to begin the extermination of hundreds of wolves this fall as part of a massive public hunt -- the first in more than three decades. Instead, those wolves will continue to roam the Rockies -- wild and free -- as nature and the law intended!

Why did U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials throw in the towel? They had to face up to the fact that their case against wolf protection would never hold up in court. Above all, they ignored the best available science showing that wolf populations had not fully recovered.

In the end, the Administration had little choice but to put its tail between its legs and beat a hasty retreat.

Make no mistake: the fight doesn't end here. You can be sure the federal government will be back soon enough with a new plan. And the states will learn their lessons and return with yet another scheme for killing wolves.

But you can be equally sure that, with your help, NRDC will stand vigilant, fully prepared to meet and turn back any new and deadly threat.

In the meantime, please join me and all of us here at NRDC in celebrating this red-letter day in the storied history of the Endangered Species Act. It happened because you and thousands of others chose to stand up in defense of embattled wildlife. Thank you!

    Sincerely,

    Frances Beinecke
    President
    Natural Resources Defense Council

Victory for northern Rockies gray wolves

    To: Earthjustice Supporters
From: Doug Honnold, Managing Attorney, Bozeman Office
Re: Victory for northern Rockies gray wolves

    Dear C.,

We've secured a major victory in our fight to save the gray wolves of the northern Rockies, and we couldn't have done it without your continued support.

Last night, the Bush administration announced that it will drop its legal defense of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service rule that declares these wolves fully recovered and removes them from the endangered species list.

This doesn't mean the fight is over. The Fish and Wildlife Service will review the rule and could re-issue it, but until they do, there won't be wolf hunting in the northern Rockies.

We want wolves to recover to the point where they can come off of the list -- much like the success with the American bald eagle -- but we want to see them come off under the right conditions, and we will remain vigilant until this happens.

Because of supporters like you, we are on the right track to making this a reality.

On behalf of the Earthjustice legal team working on this case here in Bozeman, Montana, thank you for all that you have done to help us fight to protect the gray wolves.

    Sincerely,
    Doug Honnold

    Barb AZ,

Just got this response back from Hormel re the atrocities at the pig factory farm:

We find the images in the PETA video appalling and they are inconsistent with our standards and industry standards for animal handling. Hormel Foods does not own or operate any farms.

The abuse on the video depicted practices that are completely unacceptable.

We expect all current suppliers to adhere to the proper animal handling standards from day one and continue to do so throughout our relationship. We are working with our supplier to ensure this activity is no longer taking place, and they are investigating this matter and will take appropriate disciplinary actions, including terminating employees. Underscoring our company's zero tolerance policy, we have in the past terminated employees, truckers and contracts with producers when animal welfare issues have arisen.

Animal welfare and animal husbandry have always been top priority at Hormel Foods. This is simply about treating animals humanely because it's the right thing to do. We take our zero tolerance policy for the inhumane treatment of animals very seriously and have implemented many standards outlined in our responsibility report : http://www.hormelfoods.com/responsibility/process/animalWelfare.aspx.

Hi Alex...it is Brent from Milton, Ontario. Help!!

There is a small farm just 2 minutes south of me in Milton, Ontario, Canada where there is a horse for sale for $300.00 and the owner is planning on selling the horse to menonites in Kitchener. Given what Alex has advised about the Kitchener Auction, I am afraid the menonites may sell the horse for slaughter.

She is at least 7 years old. I would like to buy her but i do not think I can afford ongoing costs and would her to be borderded as i do not have a farm. Can anyone help give this lonely horse a noce home.

    Please advise asap.

Alex - your description of the stance the NRTA is taking regarding the horse protection legislation is more polite than mine would be !!!! It is outrageous to think that they could have supported the legislation, but not now ....... which makes me think that ... "they" have been bought off. IF they have an objection to some part of the new legislation .... why not be clear on that and indicate that, with specific changes, they will support. It drives me nuts to know that these folk make money off the energy and lives of our beloved horses - and most - (with the exception of the Nick Zito's and Alex Brown's and others) are not willing to "step up and be counted." GREED - and INHUMANITY ! Perhaps we are closer to an "Animal Farm" scenario than we think ........ !! This waste of time mentality drives me nuts !

Hiya, FsOB. Alex, that was very troubling news that the NTRA is officially standing neutral on the Conyers-Burton Bill. Has the Animal Welfare League had any further dialogue with the Black Farmers Association? Is it possible that if there were some sort of formal agreement and a press conference to publicize it (ie, that there is an organization willing to take horses) that this might help convince some legislators and the NTRA? Also, what ever happened to the concept that a set percentage of daily earnings from TB racing might go into a "retirement fund" for horses?

    #### To Joan Roya, as I drove to RI this AM, I was wondering if you and your husband had made it back to TX safely. Thank you for letting us know that you arrived back!
To Margie: So glad that Lucky is diuresing and feeling better today!
To Debbie LA: Kudos to you and your husband for meeting with Congressman Bonner's aide. Having grown up in KY, I am stunned that Congresspersons from southern districts seem to be so cavalier about American horses. Very sad, I would expect more "horse loyalty" from them. Do they understand the Cavel connection in all of this?
To Laurie H: Driving home tonight, I was thinking about Mr. Bart the Cat. How is he doing? And how is the lovely Ms. Montego?
To Mary S.: I hope that the water has been restored to Sherman's boarding site. How is his hoofie doing tonight? ####
