    Barbaro Updates: 680

    updates are now here.

Update 4015: Big Brown's race on Saturday is not going to be so easy: Big Brown Faces 10 in Monmouth Stakes.

Update 4014: Showing Up, campaigned by the Jacksons and Barclay Tagg, will stand at stud in Florida for $7,500: Showing Up to Stand at Adena Springs.

I am now off back to the races here at Woodbine.

Update 4013: Another chilly start to a simply gorgeous day here at Woodbine. We had seven sets, four before the break and three after the break. The three after the break all went to the gate for some schooling. All went nicely. Just a treat of a morning's work. As I was leaving from the kitchen after work someone turned to me in the line and asked if I had saved any horses recently. He had read this article. The cool thing is you get a genuine sense here at Woodbine that people do really care about these horses and think it is cool the work that everyone is doing on this site. Thanks to the local media that has given us some great coverage.

Update 4012: Big Brown is ready for his weekend race on Saturday: Big Brown All Set For Monmouth Stakes.

A quick update on Nicanor: An Update, a Photo, and a Note.

Day 3 of the Keeneland Sales: Day 3: Bidding robust for top stock.

In memory of John Hettinger please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! Just seeking to confirm that we should continue to seek more sponsors to the Conyers-Burton Bill. Any updates on the willingness of the BFA to take any unwanted horses or donkeys? Everyone please have a productive day. Thinking of all whose lives were touched directly or indirectly by the events of 09/11/2001. Peace, RMH

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous Geo, Belle, KeyKey, Sky and the rest of the gorgeous group of Heavenly Equines.

    For them:

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 8

All calls this week will be made in honor of the best friend the horses ever had, John Hettinger. His dream was to see the end of horse slaughter. Being one of the earliest advocates of this legislation, he worked tirelessly giving his time, money and resources towards his goal. John passed away this weekend without ever seeing his dream become a reality. We must continue his efforts and ensure that all the years he spent are honored with success.

This is a VERY important week…….the House will be back in session and we should see our official co-sponsor list jump considerably

Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list with their names is on the Db and the Wiki. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. We now have 46 committments which is great!! Now is the time to put pressure on those that have not yet gone “red”

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. It is not necessary to answer complicated questions or try to explain the bill. Sometimes "less is more"!!

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!! And now, also do it for John!!

    Thanks,

    Shelley and Deb

Please pray for Smiling Dog Farms in Wharton, TX right in the path of the hurricane. Three dogs that I rescued live at this wonderful sanctuary, they were unadoptable for different reasons and are doing wonderful there. All the dogs have their own cottage with a front porch and a doggie partner. They also have many horses and donkeys rescued from slaughter living there. They have too many animals to evacuate.

Mary S. & Joan Roya and any others in Ike's path - my prayers for your safety. Living in Florida and having dealt with hurricanes I can tell you that I live in fear every hurricane season. Although I am relieved every time a hurricane turns away from our area, I feel bad for ANYONE who has to deal with one. I wish it weren't so. Wouldn't life be better without hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, blizzards (I've lived through enough of them too), ice storms and all other natural disasters?

Everything is not our fault. All of life is not our doing. But the one thing we can count on is our thinking. Think things through honestly and without excuse. Don't tell it, and don't think that's all there is to it.

The mind is the doorway to the heart and spirit. This is where the real part of us lives, where life springs forth or gives up. Knowing this, we can go in and clean house and begin to feed ourselves life-food. Life-food is Galun lati, the Spirit--and without the Spirit, everything is our fault. Never be without the Spirit.

    Good Morning Gang.

Remembering all that lost their lives 7 years ago.

I am glad to hear that Texas is taking precautions. Everyone, please be safe.

Soc - thanks for posting the links for smart animals. Just yesterday my dogs reminded me again that they think ahead. I took the dogs out last night and they flew in different directions, except for Tom, who will forever be on a leash because he takes off every time. Maybe I got tangled up in the leash or flying dogs, but I fell off the bottom step of the deck, sprained an ankle, and landed on my left shoulder and face. Within seconds, every dog was sitting up against me and sniffing. I laid there just to see what they would do. The little sentinels sat there until I got up. Then they went off to do their business. Later, I thanked them all for 'saving' me with hugs and treats.

    Thanks Alex for everything.

###MargeinNM: OUCH! Hope you are better today and do take it easy. Soreness is always worse the second day (speaking from experience here).

Gentle ((( ))) to you and yes indeed extra treats for the four-leggeds who knew there was "an issue."

Now, MY dogs would just look at me and wonder, "What are you DOING down here?" ... but they have other endearing qualities.

We take what we can get, and isn't THAT the truth. ;o)

###Safe thoughts to all in harm's way and those remembering seven years ago.

Posted by: KAY at September 11, 2008 6:47 PM

I've reported this here before but vis-a-vis Margie's experience with her dogs yesgerday, it bears repeating. From my anecdotage:

As for critters who stick with us - when my QH Joe dumped me and I was really hurt (first broken back; L3 in 93) - after I fell (still grasping the reins; I always use long split reins for trailriding) he stood like a statue - from the dervish that had reared up and dumped me (bareback) that horse turned into a virtual statue, seriously - and stood there like that for a matter of many minutes until I had done my breathing to combat pain and kinda caught my breath - tried to rise and the pain overcame me and I couldn't - at that point he went into "Ma" mode - nudging me with his nose - ever so gently -and wouldn't leave me alone until I had gotten up and somehow walked him back to the road (where we were rescued by a motorcycle rider I flagged down and sent to our barn to dispatch help). (funny aside - had trouble flagging anybody down on the road, everybody thought I was just waving hello and were all waving back! Luckily Joe's former dad was a motorcyclist and Joe was cool when the rider stopped to inquire if we needed help.)

Hell yes they think and they know what they are doing - ever so much more than even the most animal-loving and openminded of us can conceive . . .

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH

It has rained all day here and will rain more when the hurricanes hit the coast, etc. No hurricianes here but tornados in the sprin and summer. We had one in 1970 that wiped half the city out. Many fatilities. Anyway, all yole take care.

Margie in NM, glad you wasnt hurt anymore that you were. Then theres the soreness -feels like a truck ran over you. When Chief was about 3 years old I was cleaning the backyard up and I had a border collie. She and Chief loved to play chase games. As I bent over I looked up and Kate was chasing Chief full speed (Ihave a big backard) . He was looking back at her and (I have a very large backyard) and he hit my knee with all his 90 pounds. I hit the ground rolling in pain (my bad knee anyway) . Like your dogs both came to see what I was doing and they both looked so concerned like "Why are you on the ground?'I literally crawled back in the house. I hobbled around for days. At that time I could hae signed Chief up for tackle for the Green Bay Packers. Anyway, margie, glad you werent hurt any more than you were.

GOOD NEWS - CANTER MI back at the track!

Problem that barred them from the backside of MI racetrack has been resolved - which means, the horses win. Excerpt below, more details here:

CANTER Michigan would like to announce that it will be returning to the backside of Pinnacle Race Course on Saturday Sept. 13th. A meeting on Friday Sept. 5th attended by CANTER, the Michigan Racing Commissioner, the Michigan HBPA and the Pinnacle Race Course provided the opportunity for the participating parties to express their concerns regarding CANTER’s access to the backside. Misconceptions were corrected and the Racing Commissioner is providing licenses to CANTER volunteers. I would like to express my appreciation to each of the parties involved. [end of excerpt]

This is not going to be your normal pulitzer prize morning journal. AOL is giving me fits. Kodak pulling my hair out. The Red Sox lose in extra innings, so I went behind the barn and cried. Rooting for Extreme Dance FX on that talent show.

We have big news in the world of horse rescue. Good friends have made an offer on a nice size ranch in Vacaville. Husband and wife, both young, both wanting to spend the rest of their lives saving thoroughbreds. But there is more. They hope to become politically active in animal welfare. The stories the wife can tell. She worked for a large breeding farm, where abuse and neglect runs rampant. A puppy mill for thoroughbreds. She was active in helping to convince voters a race track was not needed in Dixon.

Just lost AOL again, and even the man on my computer speaker is sounding defeated. I was going to combine our friends in Vacaville opening escrow on a future thoroughbred rescue ranch, with a story about Brett who lives in Sacramento. Just 14 years old, and all by herself Brett saves the life of an older thoroughbred. A connection between Brett and the young married couple in Vacaville, but AOL has succeeded in me losing focus. Or maybe the 4th doughnut is to blame.

Over a two month period Brett earned $425.00 by cleaning stalls and helping to feed supper. She saved every nickel. Brett made a deal with her barn manager. Could a rescued horse stay for free until she finds him a good home. Barn manager adores Brett and says sure. Brett brings $425.00 to my front gate. She wants to know, will this be enough to save a thoroughbred waiting for slaughter at the feed lot in Wilton?

In Wilton I found a skinny gelding with a racing tattoo which says he is 15. A giant Thank You to Sheldon Thomas for providing free transportation. Because of the big heart of Sheldon Thomas, Brett receives $60.00 change from her $425.00. She names her new gelding Peter. The $60.00 will be put towards vaccinations and farrier work.

On the phone Brett tells me this is the biggest high she has ever experienced. And she knows horse rescue is what she wants to spend her life doing.

My morning journal today was going to show how the young couple in Vacaville and Brett in Sacramento will come together. They always do. Those on the same journey eventually find each other.

But AOL goofed me up. My rhythm out the door. Which is where I should be, finishing breakfast to 107 horses. God Bless America on this 9-11. The Supremes on the oldies station...

Kay, Sandra, CJ - thanks for the thoughts. My left knee hit the stones, (no sidewalks here), so I ended up digging particles out of me knee. I have no soreness today. Aren't these creatures wonderful? I also was hit in the back of the legs a few years back by a dog chasing dog fracas. I slammed head first into the ground and was knocked out. I woke up with the culprit laying flat up against me. It is scary to be knocked out. From then on I was always aware of where all dogs were. Until yesterday. I let my guard down. Let's all be more careful. Until the animals can call for help on the phone, we need to be on guard. (((((CJ, Kay, Sandra)))).

"The Red Sox lose in extra innings, so I went behind the barn and cried." haha

On a day when i need a laugh, Joe just makes me laugh. I love my Joe Shelton. I love my FoBs.

We will take the one in four bitches left at the closing of NH's Belmont GH track. I shouldn't be doing this. But IF NOT US THEN WHO>>>

You know what I mean. I don't know what she looks like, her parentage, her records. Who cares, I tell Robert--the guy who has been calling like a demented crazy--for days now, trying to move these last 4 dogs before they close Belmont for the season. Because of Robert these 4 little females will have lives.

In the old days, the used to call October "Carnage month." You all get it. All those dogs , bred to run, with nowhere to go...this has been a long hard road with gh rescue....but it has spawned people like Robert who will call all the GH groups he can find from his kitchen table, --off work--little kids yelling in the background.

It has spawned guys like him who GET IT> I think we have a long haul ahead of us with horse rescue. I hope I am so very wrong...

How can we be here so soon? It seems like yesterday. I was being sworn into a Grand Jury panel when the first tower was hit. I had just admired it that year from my hotel room in the New Yorker a little earlier in the very late spring during a freak snowfall: the upper floors obscured by the swirling February snow.

I made plans to go see the Windows on the World...I mean, we KNEW it would always be there, right?
    Terrible, terrible times.

Comfort to all who suffer in any way. Life is so hard.

Stopping in for a second. God Bless America and all of us on 9/11

Jonna, I was there gazing out at that unbelieveable 180 degree view from the Windows of the World in 1994. It was in November, and just before 8:00 AM on what would be a bright, clear cloudless day. Seeing the horizon brighten as the sun come up was among the most memorable things I've ever seen. Would have never imagined that the Twin Towers wouldn't always be there. On that day in 2001, I thought of all those people who worked and visited there. Still do.

Hope that Joethehorse and LadytheQuarterHorse are feeling better today.

Margie, just one more story. I will tell ou how stupid I was when I got my first lab amd was training him for the obedience ring. I was pretty green and dumb.. I had a 75 pound Lab that refused to come when I called when I was training him. I had a lon 30 ft leash. So I got an idea-take him to the park and let him take off and when he got to the end of the leash call him and jerk him off his feet. Well, at the park he took off on a fast run as usual. I called him-nada. I was so stupid I didnt think when he hit the end of the leash that was wrapped around my hand he would propel me through space. He hit the end-I went in the air and landed in a small shallow lake. I think I was kind of disorentated as I just lay there in the water. To his credit he came racing back to me (the leash was still around my and) as being a Lab he loved water and when I got my bearings he was standing over me with a stick for me to throw in the water. I was so sore for days I could hardly walk. I mean that was like stupid on my part. By the way he attained his Obedience Championship and only jumped out of the ring once. He was my first Lab and I loved him to pieces. He lived 12 years. He was much snarter than his owner.

He also could type better than his owner.

    STRATEGY UNTIL JUDICIARY COMMITTEE RECONVENES

The Judiciary Committee and the House have adjourned until Monday and we are hopeful that the Committee will bring up the bill when they reconvene next week.

Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. Please do not call the names in red on the list (on DB and Wiki) because they are already co-sponsors. We now have 80 co-sponsors which is great!! Now is the time to put pressure on those that have not yet gone “red”. The more sponsors we have, the stronger we’ll be when the Committee reconvenes and when HR6598 comes up for a vote on the floor.

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. It is not necessary to answer complicated questions or try to explain the bill. Sometimes "less is more"!!
ALSO.....VERY IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE CALL MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE AND ASK THEM TO 1) PASS THIS OUT OF COMMITTEE WITHOUT AMENDMENTS AND 2) MAKE SURE THEY ATTEND THIS COMMITTEE MEETING TO VOTE FOR PASSAGE

We are Barbaro’s voice....let it be heard.

    Thanks,

    Shelley and Deb

Prayers, ((hugs)), and the warmest positive thoughts to all, especially those in the path of these storms, those with special concerns and heavy hearts, those missing loved ones (two- and four-legged).

Love you all, with all my heart . . . .

Take A Chance was put down this morning. The FOB's saved him from within minutes of death in May, 2007. He raced in California and recouperated after surgery at Tranquility Farms. He was loved by all of us. Unfortunately, he developed colic and was in such pain he had to leave us.

I hope this makes sense. I am crying while I write this. I just felt like he was my horse to worry about since I have been with him since the very beginning.

He was just starting his new life. There are pics of him on the discussion board. Thanks for listening. He was just so special.

MJ - I am so very sorry about TAKE A CHANCE, such a beautiful boy! I wasn't familiar with his "save" but the thread caught my eye and I posted my "farewell message" for him.

Rest in peace, CHANCE, and know how much you were loved!

RIP Take A Chance. You will be missed. I am sorry, MJ.

###Sandra - are you still planning on writing a book? I'm sorry, but I just had to laugh at your story. It could have been so dangerous, but that stick really, really got to me. I still have 3 wrap around scars on my left ankle. I was talking to a neighbor years ago and my dog was on a long leash. Little did I know, my dog was walking in circles around me. Then he saw a kid on a bike and took off. I was hog tied and thrown to the ground. I will forever look at those scars with loving thoughts. (There is also plenty of chewed furniture, kitchen cabinets with bite marks, and torn towels to conjure loving memories as well.) I love to hear your stories, Sandra. You are gifted with words.

Texas FOBs - please let us know you are OK.

Hiya, FsOB! Thanks for the strategic advice re. continuing to seek cosponsors for the Conyers-Burton Bill. Today was eerie here in southern New England, because this morning's brilliant weather was as beautiful as it had been on 09/11/2001. I know that the date 09/11/2001 will resonate for all of us in the same manner as 12/07/1941 did for our grandparents and parents. Imagine a world without violence towards humans or animals. Here's to ACN, we deserve it. Peace, RMH

    #### May all of our FsOB be safe in eastern TX, Joan Roya, Mary S., Kate in Canyon Lake, Elizabeth, & Lucille M. in Houston, and may the rains and winds not head west to Lubbock and our friends Sandra & Chief.
To Barb M.: May all of the doggies and other animals stay safe at the Smiling Dogs Farm in TX.
To CJ: What a great quote from Buddha! That was too funny that our Nancy in CT said that Edgar Prado had a winner aboard Crazy Cat Lady today.
To MJ: My sympathies as you mourn the passing of Take A Chance.
To Margie in NM: I hope that you are feeling better, you could've been quite seriously injured from a fall backwards like that one. I suspect that there's a whole host of us here who sport wounds from various escapades with our animals. I have marks on my (L) palm,(R)leg, & (R) wrist from some of my late Huskies, none of whom meant to harm me.
Has anyone heard from Barb in AZ, I don't recall seeing her here this week. ####

Thank you to everyone for the sweet thoughts about Chance.

Posted by: MJ at September 12, 2008 3:09 AM

    ### Take A Chance is gone. Of the horses that are available for adoption on the Tranquility Farm Web site, he was my favorite.

Colic is just as devious and nasty a killer as laminitis. Colic can occur from something so simple as a change in barometric pressure.

    I hate it.

What should give us all comfort in this instance is the knowledge that Chance was surrounded by people who loved him and cared for him. He knew the good life, and I'm sure everyone who worked with him felt his appreciation and gratitude.

    Still, it is so unfair.

    ### RIP, Chance.
