Barbaro Updates: 676

updates are now here.

Update 3996: Just a bad day at the races, when you think and hope it will be otherwise. A horse lost his life in the sixth race. Very sad. Better Talk Now appeared to run a dull seventh. Perhaps there was simply not enough pace for him to run at. The Niagara Queen, our horse, looked to tire badly. Also on the same, yielding, turf track. Winners won. Losers lost.

Update 3995: Paulick Report on John Hettinger: HETTINGER: A MAN WHO LOVED HORSES. It begins:

Saturday was a bad day for horses. One of their best friends in the world, John Hettinger, passed away at the age of 74. No one fought harder to end the slaughter of horses in the United States than John Hettinger.

He was tireless and passionate about ending slaughter. He talked about it, wrote about it, did something about it. He was a man of words and of action. And he put his money where his mouth was.

Of all the things John Hettinger ever said or wrote about horse slaughter, there is one paragraph that has stayed with me. It came from an article he wrote in 2003 and asked me to publish in the Bloodhorse.

"How do we as an industry feel about our horses?" he wrote. "Are we horse lovers? Are these animals, who work for us in one way or another throughout their entire lives, sensitive and capable of trust, courage and generosity of spirit? Or are they fast cows without horns?"

Fast cows without horns? That line got me. Until then, I was ambivalent about slaughter

I am now off to Woodbine to watch some fast horses race.

Update 3994: A bit of a damp and dreary morning this morning at Woodbine. I had seven sets overall. Six for Steve, and then I freelanced one for Anita (Terry Jordan). A very straightforward morning.

I did see Better Talk Now coming off the track after his training session. He was in very good order for his race today. Let's hope he can get his win. I also ran into Jonathan Sheppard, he has a runner in the filles and mares stake. Running against our horse The Niagara Queen. In fact we have some great racing here this afternoon, let's hope the weather cooperates a little bit!

MEGA ACTION.

Update 3993: We have lost a great horse advocate. John Hettinger was a leader in the fight to end horse slaughter. He also took in horses that were bought from New Holland: Horse Advocate John Hettinger Dies, excerpt:

Winner of the Eclipse Award of Merit in 2000, Hettinger was an outspoken opponent of horse slaughter and founded Blue Horse Charities to abolish the mistreatment of horses and to set up adoption for many after their racing careers were over.

Asked in one interview why he was so devoted to the cause, Hettinger said: "All of my best friends have four legs."

Discuss: John Hettinger Passed Away Today...... and RIP Horse Advocate John Hettinger.

Eight Belles will be memorialized today in a ceremony in the Kentucky Derby Museum Gardens: Public Invited to Eight Belles Ceremony.

Update 3992: A long day spent at the sales today at Woodbine. We ended up buying three fillies. I actually bid on one filly as an under bidder. An interesting experience, I had never bid on a horse at an auction before. Prior to the bidding I looked at quite a few horses. If I did this for a week or two I think I would get a decent eye for what to look for. For today it was a steep learning experience. I also met Jill, an FOB. She will be attending the races here tomorrow and hopefully we will all meet up and have a fun time.

Update 3991: A busy day today. Not so much galloping-wise as we only had seven sets and were pretty much done by 9 am. We have six runners today, and there is also the sale this afternoon, which begins at 3 pm. We are busy looking at horses for the sale this morning. Busy busy. Rain early in the day, but it appears to have cleared out for a pretty decent afternoon!

Update 3990: Not surprisingly, 2007 2yo champion War Pass is retired. He did not recover from his fracture that was likely sustained in the Wood Memorial this spring: 2YO Champ War Pass Retired.

The 2yo filly champion is running today at Belmont: Indian Blessing to stretch out for Ruffian.

Hay, FOB's!

Am I one of...or the first...today?

Hurricane has made landfall in the Carolinas...well winds or no winds, I'm driving to the chant session tonight.

Prayers that today's racing will be cancelled here in the East...all depends on the path of the storm...but if there is racing, prayers for the safety of horses and humans...

Prayers for Peanut and Donna.

You are all the greatest.

Prayers for all the beloved horses who bravely put hooves to tracks this weekend, and every day!

Please stop and say a prayer TOMORROW at 2 pm in honor of the lovely EIGHT BELLES, whose memorial service will be held at that time at Churchill Downs...how wonderful that several FOBs will be representing us at that ceremony!

Good Morning Fambleee Happy Saturday.

Thinking of Donna and her husband today, and their adorable Cookiepinknodes, who are mourning the loss of precious Peanut, the cutest minipoo in the world. Along with Cookie, of course. He was so loved, his absence will be very painful. So many of us feel his loss as though he was our own, as they were so generous to share him.

Praying for safety for all who run today. I have a special love for Indian Blessing, (John Velasquez) a really beautiful filly. She's had an amazing start in her short career. The thing is, she's running against Tough Tiz's Sis with Edgar. Tough Tiz's Sis is a half sibling to a horse in CA owned by a friend of mine who also has Tiz in his name. (TizNow is their sire) She recently came in second to Zenyatta in July at Hollywood Park, both overtaking Silver Zee who had a 15 length lead early in the race. Both girls love the synthetic track so this should be interesting. Please be safe, girls

gotta jet. Later, all

I have a question.......Why has Genuine Reward never been bred to really high quality mares? His mother was such a great mare and he carries her genetic material even tho he was not a race horse.

I feel so bad that she has left this world but thank her owners for the good life they gave her.

MANNY PHELPS GETS A GAS CARD GIFT...WHAT THE HELL???
#################################################
Saturday, September 6th...

Silly politics dictates I am not allowed to tell you his name. But an 8 year old gelding who earned gobs of money is coming to us from a race track in Los Angeles. We will call him Excess.

And on Monday two more race horses arrive from Northern California tracks. We are shoulder to shoulder, hock to hock. All stalls, pens, and the mare motel jammed packed. Injured race horses are not allowed in our fields until healed. Syringes of pain medication line our kitchen counter. Several of our larger round pens have two horses.

Poop on top of poop...

Word comes from several horse killers how Canada is giving drivers of doomed horses vouchers for gasoline. Canada wants horses to butcher, so they are willing to pay traveling expenses. Horse killer Manny Phelps received a $150.00 gas voucher. Boggles the mind...

On Wednesday there were 11 horses waiting for Canadian slaughter at a feed lot in Wilton. Including a thoroughbred mare and her 7 month old colt. The colt needed to be weaned, yet given his situation, who really cares? Let me introduce you to a young lady from the town of Danville. Recently married, recently bought her own house with 3 acres, and she tells me if I come across a mare and foal to give her a call. Well okay then. The mare and 7 month old colt are priced at 40 cents a pound. A whopping $525.00 for both mom and son. A giant Thank You to Sheldon Thomas for providing free transportation. Mom and son are settling in nicely, and next week son will be weaned. Over the fence separation so the two can still see each other.

Also at the same feed lot in Wilton a young quarter horse gelding with 4 brand new shoes. 40 cents a pound, which comes to $440.00. The quarter horse gelding was rescued by a wonderful family in Grass Valley.

And an unbroke black and white filly who is willing enough, but scared. She is probably 3 years old. 40 cents a pound, which comes to $320.00. The black and white scared filly is rescued by a lesson barn not far from us. Students will take her for long walks, and teach her the basics. Next spring the filly will be broke to ride.

By yesterday, Friday, 5 more horses had arrived to the feed lot in Wilton. None were thoroughbreds. All come from ranch foreclosures, or Free Horse ads on the internet.

The fight is endless. One horse at a time. To the generous readers of Tbfriends, we thank you for your help. Our economy in big trouble, yet you say okay, send us one more horse.

A college student in Davis, and she has to pay board. Money is tight. She tells me to send her a 40 cents a pound gelding. She found a ranch who gave her a great deal on monthly board. The gelding came to her on Labor Day Monday. He is a thoroughbred mix. On the phone the college student tells me Thank You. She loves her feed lot gelding like crazy. He has a goofy personality, but comes to her when called. She stayed late one night so she could see him eat supper. Driving away she noticed he had come to the fence. He watched her leave. From far away down a county road he was still watching her. She tells me she knows the feeling. The feeling of I cannot wait to see him tomorrow.

Love those UC Davis students. Anika sends us a photo of Turbulent City, we called him Turbo, and he looks like a brand new horse. Enjoy your hot Saturday, and be sure to hug your horses.

This is that True Love, that brilliant, shiny, new love that if we are lucky we know at least once in our lives...

And then there is Manny. And the someone who gave him a $150 gas card. Somewhere in the Big White Book of Karma, notes are being made. List will be drawn up. The Great Mandella in the Sky turns yet again.

And that little TB cross--he knew that girl belonged to him. Absolutely. That's why he watched forever...

###Awareness is the key, but when I read about gas cards from Canadian slaughter houses to people like Manny Phelps--who rumor says is related to swimming phenom Michael and who was in Beijing in the family section watching records being broken--in order to insure that there is enough horseflesh for someone's table (of course, they probably pronounce it "tob-luh")...well, it just boggles my MIND!

I am SO wishing I had room for more at MY house. I don't--and if someone wants to push the CC&Rs for our housing development, I could get into real trouble. (We don't really have a formal homeowners association, which means no one to enforce the rules, but I know that if I tried to push the envelope, there would be a sudden formation of a HA and then I'd be up Joe's famous Poop-On-Top-Of-Poop Creek).

###So I will send my pitiful contributions and hope others do the same and maybe our gas cards will be more attractive than the ones that are being waved from across the border...and our beloved horses will be safe.

###Let's hope the weather isn't interfering with any posters. I've been watching the news and while the seashore along South Carolina (Myrtle Beach?) looks gray and not very fun, the waves are calm and there are people walking along the shoreline.

Prayers to all. Ack.

Eileen - Your question about Genuine Reward, my guess would be that he was never bred to high quality mares due to the fact he was unraced. People probably not willing to take a chance. Just my guess though.

RIP Horse Advocate John Hettinger

Horse advocate Hettinger dies at 74
By DAVID GRENING

John Hettinger, a horse advocate, horse owner, and former chairman of the Grayson Jockey Club Research Foundation, died Saturday morning at his Akindale Farm in Pawling, N.Y., following a lengthy illness. He was 74.

Hettinger spent the latter half of his life heavily involved in horse racing, taking over his family's Akindale Farm in 1973 and expanding the property to 800 acres from 55 acres. As an owner, Hettinger campaigned such stakes winners as Chase the Dream, Genuine Regret, Jazzing Around, Lady D'Accord, Move It Now, Prospector's Flag, Stacked Pack, and Sir Wimborne. Hettinger's biggest victory came in the 1989 Long Island Handicap with Warfie.

In 1991, Hettinger helped revive Fasig-Tipton, North America's oldest Thoroughbred auction company, personally supplying 40 percent of the firm's $6 million capitalization plan. He supplied another $1.2 million from trusts benefiting his sons, James and William.

Hettinger, a member of the board of trustees of the New York Racing Association, became an outspoken opponent of horse slaughter and founded Blue Horse Charities, which was designed to help abolish the mistreatment of horses and raise money for adoption and retirement programs.

Hettinger is survived by his wife Betty, sons James and William, and grandchildren Caroline, Charles, and Lilly.

Funeral arrangements are private. [end article]

I posted the above in both the Racing and Anti-Slaughter (US) folders at the DB, along with a plea (from Gail V) to renew and intensify our committment and efforts to end horse slaughter in honor of his memory and to consider supporting the horse charity he founded. An outspoken opponent of horse slaughter, he founded Blue Horse Charities to help abolish the mistreatment of horses and raise money for adoption and retirement programs. Details re Blue Horse Charities are at the DB Threads.

Finally sufficiently "vertical" to spend some time online. Those 4 late nights in a row of music (Sat thru Tues) while fighting a cold, finally got to me and I was kinda floored by a fluish thingee that settled in my chest and left me weak as a sick kitten! Could only manage one litter box at a time and my twice daily catchores were about all I could muster. Feeling more human and hoping to catch up on what I've missed since Tuesday afternoon.

Watched an intesting Extreme Cowboy Race on RFD-TV (379 on DirecTV) this morning - amazing the obstacles they negotiate - available on the puter as well.

Hoping for a safe weekend of racing and other endeavors for all.

###### I am not "political" except for advocating to end HS (and a few other specific environmental, animal and personal rights issues) and other than that, you have never and will never see me recommending political action.

But I must say that I am appalled that the national media has not yet caught on to the anti-animal/envorinmental history of the GOP VP pick. Again - I am not advocating anything other than exposure of facts, so that people can make their own decisions. But given the utter lack of coverage her anti-animal/enviromental history, I feel it important to state my hope that people be made aware of her history in this regard, to enable them to make an informed choice. That's my soapbox for today! Surprised?

AWI Press Release on loss of John Hettinger

http://www.awionline.org/news/2008/john_hettinger.htm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AWI Mourns the Loss of Leading Advocate for Horses

Washington, DC (September 6, 2008) - It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of horseman and humanitarian John Hettinger, the nation’s leading advocate for the humane treatment of horses. John was the first person to join the Animal Welfare Institutes's national campaign to end horse slaughter in 2001. Since that time he never wavered in his commitment and only grew stronger in his desire and determination to end horse slaughter.

“I can honestly say no other person was more dedicated to horse welfare than John,” said Chris Heyde, deputy director of government and legal affairs for AWI. “We would talk almost every day about how we could pass the ban on horse slaughter and how we could improve the lives of horses. John’s death is a tremendous loss.”

Owner of Akindale Farm in New York, John was a leading Thoroughbred industry figure who never shrunk from his stand on animal welfare. He always stated that “his best friends have four legs.” Over the last few years he created a sanctuary for horses in need on his beautiful 800 acre farm. The stalls were always filled with enrichment items and music was pumped through the barn. The horses were always his priority.

“I was very lucky to have known him as a supporter of AWI’s efforts and as a friend. He was unique,” noted Heyde. “He is to be congratulated for awakening the industry to the abuse of horse slaughter. We look forward to working with the Thoroughbred industry to fulfill his dream.”

The Animal Welfare Institute sends its deepest condolences to his lovely wife Betty and loving family who always shared John’s deep respect for animals and nature.

“With John’s passing, AWI calls on everyone redouble their efforts for enactment of federal legislation banning horse slaughter. While it didn’t happen in his lifetime, John was certain it would happen. Now it is up to us to do just that.” said Heyde.

Kay, you talked about your "pitiful contributions". I can give very little but if we can all give little bits it all adds up to big bits. I have been shocked when I learned of the big money makers in their racing days who now stand waiting for the trucks to take them to Mexico or Canada. Its like "well, you no longer are of any importance so its offto Mexico or Canada you go". Of course, it doesnt matter as any horse does not deserve to go on any foreign dinner plate. There are thousands of unwanted dogs but the animal shelter humanely puts them down. Can you imagine the Americian people if they read where the dogs are brutally killed and sent off to be served in a fancy French, Belgium, etc. restaurant. Guess I am on my soap box today.

Sept 6 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

We've known extremes. We have pushed beyond common sense and we have paid a price for it. Most of us know what is good for us, but we allowed ourselves to be influenced where we should have stood our ground.

This is true even of the little things---though often the results are not little at all. Things like eating and drinking and talking too much, these things are not bad in particular, but so easily overdone. There's no obvious stopping place so we are well past the stop sign before we know it is there. Education? Awareness? Group understanding? These things may help, but a thorough adjustment in the soul and spirit is the only lasting answer.

My Great Father...told me that fire and water were alike, and that we cannot live without either of them.

Jonna, hope you are feeling better. Maybe you have a 24 hour bug. Have wanted to tell you for a long time how much I admire and appreciate your work with the greyhounds. I didnt know much about it but a few years ago I worked with a teacher whose husband raised racing greyhounds. They had hundreds at their place and leased many out. I was shocked. I saw the rape stands and they were going to shoot some in the heaad that were too old or not winners. It was like a herd of cattle. They didnt get love or even petted. I never went back. And that is how I became very much against dog racing. But you know all this. You also know what sweet great pets they can be. It is a cruel business. Anyway, just wanted to thank you for the care and love you give to the sweet greyhounds. Your reward will be great in Heaven. You will be assigned the job of taking care of the greys and, of course, your beloved white mare will be there with you.

Posted by: sandra at September 6, 2008 10:56 PM

Thank you, Mr. Hettinger. Rest in Peace.

Posted by: MargieinNM at September 6, 2008 11:19 PM

On a personal note, John Hettinger was the person who first got me involved and gave me direction in helping to end horse slaughter. I am very sad that this wonderful man didn't get the chance to see it end in his lifetime.

I join Chris Heyde and everyone at AWI who issued the following statement:

“With John’s passing, AWI calls on everyone redouble their efforts for enactment of federal legislation banning horse slaughter. While it didn’t happen in his lifetime, John was certain it would happen. Now it is up to us to do just that.” said Heyde.

Let's dedicate our effort and get it done for this honorable and fine man!

CROSSPOST FROM THE DB FOR EIGHT BELLES:

: ALL (1 of 8)

28191.1

It's official...the Blue Angels are here in Maine! They were supposed to fly today as well as tomorrow, but low clouds kept them on the ground. Luckily, Hanna is supposed to do her thing overnight, after which the sky should be partly cloudy for the rest of tomorrow. I went to Naval Air Station Brunswick, the site of the air show, today just to look at the aircraft and meet a few of the pilots, and I noticed out of the corner of my eye that all six Blue Angels pilots were there, signing autographs and chatting with the public.

Here's my big idea, and where I need your help. As long as the weather co-operates, the Blues will be there tomorrow, and more than likely they will be in the same place signing autographs. Would it not be incredible if all six of them signed an 8 Belles photograph? We could raffle it off for a rescue, donate it to a museum or the owners...the possibilities are endless, but I need a PHOTOGRAPH first! That's where you all come in. If ANYONE on this board has connections to a horse race photographer with a picture of 8 Belles, PLEASE contact him or her and ask permission for me to print out the photo so that the Blue Angels can sign it. As the show is tomorrow, we need to act fast! Of course, I can't make an ironclad guarantee that they'll be available to sign the photo, but in the rare case that they can't, Patty Wagstaff, the most accomplished female acrobatic pilot to date, is also performing, and I'm sure that between the two of them, we'll get a signature on the photo.

I hate to do this so rushed, but I didn't even know that they were going to be there to sign autographs until an hour ago! Who can help me on this one?

Jake

Sticking my 2 cents in on animal welfare issues/VP pick. Unmockingly, I say, the status of animals is different in some parts of the country. Here in northern NM, some restaurants serve goat. It is the norm. If this was done in say Philadelphia or Manhattan or southern New Jersey, people would be in an uproar. But here it is normal and a cultural way of life. I had to also get used to people hanging freshly killed chickens from trees in their front yards for the bleed out.

Spending almost her entire life in Alaska, she probably cannot relate to what the lower 49 may find very offensive. Cloistered, she may very well be. If she becomes VP, it will be our job to educate her, speak out, and continue to protect the animals.

Forever on guard, forever vigilant, no matter who's salary WE are paying.

Down off the soap box and I hope I didn't offend anyone.

What a lovely idea, Susan E. I hope it comes to fruition.

Here is some info on the Wild Horse issue. There will be a Wild Horse Summit In Las Vegas October 11-12.

Two of our AZ group were actually instrumental in getting it started. They have been working with Jerry Reynoldson and Craig Downer, and a couple of other folks to put this together. Hopefully we can make some progress for our wild horses.

###I doubt that there will be much need for someone from AK to be eating moose, caribou, or doing other hunting/fishing types of things while working in Washington DC.

That said, we do have to understand that being a good steward of the earth (as the Bible teaches) does NOT mean not hunting/fishing.

Humans settled this land by living off it--history proves it. Much of AK is still very wild and woolly--and people who live there do not all live near mini-malls and grocery stores. They have to live off the land, too, fishing, hunting etc.

###It's one thing to kill an animal just to hang its head on the wall or stuff it for a museum or use its pelt for boots or a rug in the house. It's something else to kill an animal and use all parts of it to feed and clothe the family. I have no problem with that--it's the "good steward" thing again.

The "environmentalists" ban controlled hunting of mountain lions, for example, and then scream when innocent hikers are attacked by mountain lions. They urge Congress to ban offshore ocean fishing. The fish population increases which means the sharks come in closer to shore to enjoy the food swimming around. And swimmers get attacked because they are "swimming around," too.

It's all related.

These folks need to read up on wildlife management. It's an interesting subject and makes a lot more sense than some of the "theory" touted by more than a few "animal rights activists" who are, I'm coming to find out, basically clueless. If they understood history, they would not freak out over someone going hunting and eating what they have killed.

For those who choose the vegan lifestyle, go for it. Eat enough "perfect protein" so as to not be hungry--and very irritable. Take care to get adequate nutrition the vegetarian way. But do not criticize someone is a good steward and eats the way we were designed to eat--as omnivores. For some people, their idea of getting enough protein is not by eating bugs on their lettuce.

As Marge in NM says, we need to make people aware.

ABR/DB Message 28200.1 General: Non-horse - ActionAlert--Stop offshore drilling plan

[excerpted below; omitting references to specific politicians/office holders]

Hi,

Ready to line our coasts with oil rigs that would pollute our waters and threaten dolphins and other marine wildlife and wreck coastal economies?

. . . [P]lans [are underway] to do just that, and we've only got until September 15th to stop them!

Help stop their dangerous drilling plan. Take action online at [the link at the bottom of this post].

According to the Minerals Management Service, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita resulted in 124 separate spills and more than 740,000 gallons of petroleum products spilled offshore, including raw and refined oil that leaked into the Gulf of Mexico and fragile wetlands.

Such spills can kill birds, sea turtles and dolphins, foul beaches and wreck coastal economies.

And while the environmental damage of offshore drilling may be significant, the savings to U.S. consumers would not be. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that drilling off our coasts would have "no significant" impact on domestic production until 2030! And, even then "impact on average wellhead prices is expected to be insignificant." It's not worth it! Help stop the . . . dirty drilling plan by sending a message online at:

Sept 5 Cherokee Devotional [from yesterday - sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

On this long list of important things, is this present worry anywhere near the top? It could be, but most likely it isn't. In a split second fear can shuffle our priorities into a jumbled mess until we see it all as one big hurdle.

Stop and ask if it is fact or fear. Fact can even be changed, but fear has a way of taking our deepest fear and molding it into a monster. We have a flair for begging monsters to stay away when we should be calling them cowards and shriveled and gone. We have the authority to do it--and it works because words have the power of life and death!

I want to tell you this, because I believe if you know it you will correct the evil.

You are welcome, CJ.

Why in the he:: are we not pushing for more wind and solar? The area I live in embraces solar, which is good. The University of New Mexico/Taos will be total solar by 2009. But wind turbines seem to cause massive cardiac negative reactions. The new turbines make no more noise than the wind surrounding them. I just really don't understand the urgency of more drilling. T. Boone Pickens is pleading with the American public to get more involved with this. ARGHHHHHHH.

And grazing animals don't seem the least bit perturbed by the turbines. They just keep eating.

Hello FOBs,

I spent the whole day without internet, without cable. Out of touch... Anyway - thankfully tonight the cable came back on and then a few hours later, finally internet connection fixed. I haven't a clue what caused the problem. It couldn't have been Hanna who was way up the coast. I'm just glad to be back online.

Good night everyone,

Sandra, I must politely disagree with your assertion that "There are thousands of unwanted dogs but the animal shelter humanely puts them down." Here in the so-called civilized state of Ohio, dogs in shelters are routinely gassed and killed by heartstick every day, both extremely painful methods of killing. These poor animals may not end up on anyone's dinner plate, but they suffer before they die just the same as the slaughtered horses do. It was a shock to me to learn this as a recent transplant to Ohio, so this is not intended to offend you, just to get the facts out there. I thought our civilization had advanced to a pojnt where at least our unwanted house pets were humanely euthanized, but that is not the case.

Posted by: MajasMom at September 7, 2008 2:50 AM

Our precious Nala died in my arms at home today, she is now in heaven with Kaiser, Barbaro and all our other precious creatures. She is the bravest dog, so special, had a heart of gold and loved her family as much as we loved her. I told the vet today as soon as my husband gets home from Saratoga (tomorrow) we might have to consider euthanizing her, well God made that decision today. Thank you for everyone's years of prayers, I am devastated and can't believe she is gone, she always will be my forever soul mate. She had a wonderful time on vacation at Saratoga and I took off work the past 2 weeks to spend every minute with her, typing thru tears.

Nala has been contributing to the "dogs against cancer ride" and you can read her tribute that was written months ago and see her picture at www.dogcancerride.com, click on "map of heroes" then click on her picture in southeast Florida.

Maybe someone who knows how could re-post this on Monday, there are not too many people reading during the weekend and I would like all to see her picture, so many have been praying for her.

Some of us have used our minds like u yo-leaving the lids off so that it collects u yo which is Cherokee for garbage. No wonder we have so little self-reliance, we learn so little from our experiences.

Each of us needs to keep a close eye on everything we do. This is a whole new world without observation of many rules. We used to know what was safe and what should be watched, but the times have changed and many of the so-called rules have been rewritten.

Good things and good people still exist and we should be a part of it. But it is not wise to leave ourselves open to every passing bit of trash.

### Kay and Margie in NM,

Thank you for your posts regarding hunting in the west. Yes, for sure, it is a much different lifestyle out here and there are many, many people who hunt deer, elk, bear, etc. and use every bit of meat for their families. Many live 100 miles from a grocery store (NOT an exaggeration) and are 4th and 5th generation natives trying to make ends meet. It IS truly a way of life here.

In Colorado they eliminated the spring bear season several years ago and during years of drought there are bears who travel right through the cities and towns looking for food (which many idiots leave out). If they are caught once they are tagged and transported back to the mountains, but twice and they are put down. Likewise, if they attack or menace anyone, they are put down.

If the deer and elk herds become too large here many animals starve during the winters, especially if they are harsh. Believe me, the sight of a starving, dying deer or elk is not pretty.

Hunting in order to preserve the balance of nature and to provide meat for your family is not a bad thing. My father was a huge hunter but had as much love and respect for animals as I do. Let us not judge the VP pick for being a hunter.

### OH BARB - how I feel for you. I too have had them go on their own after I had already made the decision to get help from the vet - one (Jacqui, another of the T Bar J barncats) actually passed away in the carrier in the van on the way to the vet . . . So glad Nala was at home with you - and how wonderful that you were able to spend all your time with her the last few weeks. She was such a good girl and she tried so hard to stay with you. My heart is with you and your family. Much love -

Posted by: CJaffe at September 7, 2008 3:08 AM

Barbi - I'm just devastated to hear the news about Nala. I knew that she was declining and you felt the end was coming, but still there is no way to prepare yourself for when it happens. Tomorrow it is exactly a month since we said good bye to Kaiser and there hasn't been a day that I haven't cried my heart out for him. Barbi - Nala had a good home full of love and she was absolutely devoted to you.

Just take one day at a time.

Barb, I am so very sorry. I have no words other than to tell you our virtual arms are around you.

###Deborah and Kay - I don't think hunting is what really upsets most people. I think it's the aerial culling methods, polar bear and beluga whale issues. But I could be wrong. The airplane culling would not be tolerated in at least half of this country. I am not against hunting. But hunting and culling from airplanes I find reprehensible.

Good Night dearest Famblee. Good Night Sweet Nala. You are with us forever.

## Barb - I am so sorry to hear that Nala is gone. I've followed her story and what a brave and happy girl she has been. Her pic on the Florida map confirms that - happy eyes - in a sweet soul. I have no doubt at all that my Chico, who joined Barbaro on August 1st - was there, on the bridge, to greet Nala - with a ball in his mouth. He will be so pleased to have a new friend to play with. He tells me that he has learned to ride Barbaro - bareback ! Undoubtedly, there is room on that broad back for Nala, too ! Amigo and I will make a donation to the dogcancerride site to honor Nala. For you and your family - we offer a huge hug and a welcoming shoulder. We understand your sadness.

Sept 3 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

The need for security can create an uneasy nest. Where do we go? But the most unholy question is, "Where did I fail?"

Change does not mean failure. It means upheaval and it means trial and effort, but it does not mean failure. Anger about change means we have not thought it through, we have not looked beyond the limits, beyond the perimeter of what is familiar.

The biggest problem is that the ones who instigate it are not the ones that will make the change. But those who make the change will eventually find it was the best thing that ever happened. It brought out new strengths and new thinking and the knowledge that security is not in other people--but in ourselves.

###Barb, Nala was met by Blossom, Pansy and Benny when she crossed the Bridge. My three big dogs crossed in 2006 (Pansy) and 2007 (Blossom and Benny), each from the same horrid disease. She is among many friends, your Nala.

She gave you the greatest of all gifts when she died in your arms. She left when she knew you were there for her and she felt safe. She knew you would be all right with her decision.

###Those who are posting for Defenders of Wildlife: Do your research before you believe what they say. Their claims are not 100% true regarding the platforms in the Gulf during Katrina. Use a search engine to find articles about oil platforms and pollution during Katrina. I think you'll be surprised by the results.

Like a lot of the environmentalist propaganda, claims by DoW are, uh, "heightened" to produce shock and amazement but are not based on facts. We've all known people in our lives who "embroider the truth" and that's how you have to approach any statements made by environmentalists, politicians, and a lot of others.

I just think back to the pictures of the polar bears on the ice floe (I see the commercial with that "very concerned" actress--can't remember her name now, but she looks SO distraught over the polar bears dying from "global warming" and then we see the polar bears on the piece of ice and I HAVE to laugh--because the bears are PLAYING and they are not "stranded and doomed" as the original print ad and the actress would have you believe).

As they say, "Trust but verify."

Many weak excuses come to mind to give us a right to self pity--we don't feel well, we haven't slept in a week, or we simply don't know what others expect of us. All these things can be true and all have a devastating effect, but we could have said we are in the midst of a pity celebration.

Mind games tell us we need an excuse to keep from being overwhelmed with obligations. We don't need any excuse to say we are simply not up to the challenges at this time. If people want to be offended it is their privilege, but right now self honesty and rest are more important.

It was she and her hub who trained Shiloh the Appy, and they're now training two exquisite Fjords. Their Snowy Ridge Ranch is a place of serenity and a haven for horses to live as they should. I'm sure Natrlhorse will appreciate the PR for Jippo :)

Eileen,
As to why Genuine Reward isn't bred to high quality mares; according to a nice lady at Newstead Farm who I asked this of last year, the reason is that he is not a nice boy in the breeding shed. He bites, kicks and tries to hurt the mares and people, but he does ok in a pasture the "old fashioned" way. Not too many owners want to breed their mares that way I guess. It also has something to do with the Jockey Club rules about certifying the breeding (with video etc.) Genuine Risks line will not die out just yet, maybe now he'll get the chance to breed with more Thoroughbred mares. I too pray that will happen and produce another Lady as great as Genuine Risk.

Kathy, I was at Tim's barn last Sunday, will be there next Sunday. Molly is such a sweetheart, I wish she could come back (like Lacie did...). Last Sunday Donna, her mom and I got to see Nicanor work out at the track and he looked great...the horses at Tim's barn are wonderful. As Donna and I walked back, we saw a horse in an outdoor paddock and he looked straight at us so we walked over to visit. His name is Sacred Journey (loved the name) and he is sweet...truly sweet. All the horses in Tim's barn...and I mean each and every one of them...wanted to be kissed...all 25 of them and Sacred Journey was #26. That has never happened before to me.

MajasMom, You are right about the animal shelters. I wasnt thinking beyond my city and state. By law here all dogs and cats have to be put down by a needle like in the vets office. I know a woman whose job was putting them down here at our shelter. She once had a dog that wasto be put down and as she was beginning to put the needle in the dog wanted to shake hands with her. She went out ot the room and informed her boss she could not put down a dog who wanted to shake hands with her. By the way she adopted the dog. The problem is the LARGE number of dogs and cats who end up at the shelter. Of course, the answer is spaying and neutering. I did forget that not all areas have the same law as we do for putting them down. Of course, the tragedy is they are there in the first place. There just arent enough homes. Besides the cith animal shelter there is a no kill shelter here. They are too ull to take any more. It is owned by two attys.

JOE FOR SUNDAY DINNER;;;;;;;
*****************************************************
Sunday, September 7th... We are having liability insurance issues, and a weekend camp for teenagers who live at youth shelters is on hold. Hopefully this can be fixed. Always liked that word.... Hopefully.

This past Tuesday we were visited by 9 teenagers who live in what is called a group home. It was 185 degrees. Flies so thick you could reach out and tickle one. A girl 16 had never been with horses before. She learns about cleaning feet. The feet stink. She says yuck. Begins to insist on soap and water. After scrubbing her hands she wants to know how can anyone live with horses? All the poop, all the flies, all the hard work. The girl goes into the van and waits for her friends. Air conditioning and a cd player.

Yesterday, which was Saturday, my little phone rings and the 16 year old girl asks do I remember her? The girl says all she thinks about is my ranch. The dusty horses. How Limo slobbered apple all over her shirt. How neglected Cope would not leave her alone. She wants to know, can she visit again soon?

I say you bet. And I tell her about a weekend camp which might take place at the end of this month. I explain our insurance issues. Kids just like her who have never before been with horses. The number one reason liability insurance is needed.

The girl says no. She says who cares about a weekend camp? She wants to visit by herself and spend time with Limo. With Cope. With Pony Boy.

And then she tells me her life story. How she ended up in a group home. A very sad tale...

She apologized for acting like a princess. Afraid to get her hands dirty. She wishes she could go back to Tuesday. Start all over again. And let Limo spit apple all over her shirt.

While she was here she felt like a space alien. She did not belong. By Tuesday night all she can think about is horses.

So she went on the internet. Found Tbfriends. Found Nor Cal Rescue. Learned how quarter horses are the number one breed who are slaughtered daily. Thoroughbreds rank number two.

And she walked up to the front door of a home in Citrus Heights. There were three horses. She asked the man, could she please pet his horses. She brought apples to share.

The man was skeptical, but said okay. She tells me she got her hands dirty. Never washed them. All the way back to where she lives she felt happy inside.

She wants to learn. Can she visit Tbfriends by herself and spend time with horses?

She lives an hour away, with no transportation. We have a foster home in Orangevale. This family is currently taking care of two of our horses. I called foster mom yesterday and explained about the 16 year old girl. The group home is only a few blocks from foster mom. Would it be okay if the girl came over and learned a few things?

Foster mom says they would be happy to share their horses. Introductions take place this morning, a beautiful first Sunday in September. Foster mom is going to make lunch. Club sandwiches with potato salad.

I remember when I touched my first horse. Maybe I was 8 or 9. The horse was white, and named Whitey. I thought who cares, he stinks, and there is a bunch of gunk in his eyes. But by night I could not get Whitey out of my brain.

Enjoy your we are cooling down Sunday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Tell your friend I am so so sorry...I have a sad little 2-year old sister here today, whose jet black brother should be almost at his new home in Buffalo. Complicated story, but this was the best for all around...except for me who is a wuss (sp?)
everytime i place a dog and this really was something i have never done. Hank is going to live with his OTHER littersister and it'll be fine. The woman who runs THAT group has the Broodbitch AND the Sire--so there'll be many reunions.

Once we place Jackie locally, I am sure there will be trips up and down the NYS Thruway to Laura's place for famblee reunions...

But off the Millie topic. Tell your friend that greyhounds--if given the chance--will work to replace themselves..It just works like that. Every GH who gets out of harm's way and to an adoption group, ALSO makes safe haven for ANOTHER GH at that track...so, it's a two-fer...I hope she can keep her heart open. We need adoptions just like all the other INDUSTRIES that trade 9n the lives of animals.

XXOO:j
Courage
But I know how much she must hurt. Heaven ifs filled with greyhounds and TBs...and if that isn't Heaven, I don't know what is...

Eight Belles memorialized at Derby Museum
By WILL GRAVES, AP Sports Writer

AP - Sep 7, 3:22 pm EDT
Larry Jones stood at the podium, his voice breaking ever so slightly. Even now, four months later, the veteran trainer finds it difficult to talk about the death of Eight Belles.

“It still tears me up as bad as the day that it happened,” Jones said Sunday after a memorial service for the filly at the Kentucky Derby Museum, a furlong or two from the track where she ran her final race. “But I do feel now that some things are coming in order and we know that (the racing industry) is going to be better because of Eight Belles.”

The 3-year-old broke both front ankles moments after finishing second to Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby and was euthanized on the Churchill Downs track. The sudden, freakish death started a debate that has led to talk of major reform in an industry slow to change.

Sunday, though, was about remembering the horse that became just the fifth filly to crack the top two spots in the Derby. More than 200 fans, some from New York and South Carolina, crammed the small courtyard outside the museum in honor of the big gray horse who proved she could run with the boys.

Flowers and cards surrounded the plaque above her grave, including a small bouquet of red roses from the Fans of Barbaro, a support group formed after 2006 Derby winner Barbaro broke down during the Preakness.

“It’s a tribute to how many people really care about this sport,” said Eight Belles owner Rick Porter. “Eight Belles touched a lot of hearts.”

Jones, who along with jockey Gabriel Saez came under heavy fire after the Derby, received a standing ovation while he spoke. Jones endured the brunt of racing critics angry over the second high-profile breakdown during a Triple Crown race in three years and called the days following the Derby the most trying of his career.

Critics charged Jones with injecting Eight Belles with steroids and argued Saez worked the whip too forcefully in the final yards. A steroids test came back negative, and Jones defended Saez’s ride. That didn’t stop the letters of protest from filling Jones’ mailbox as he found himself becoming the chief defender for the sport’s many problems.

“We felt like we had to defend horse racing ourselves and all the things on it,” Jones said. “I’m glad we could do it. Did any of the other 19 horses at the Derby voice up and said ‘My horse wasn’t on steroids either’? … They may not have been, but they didn’t voice up. Maybe we were the only one that could do it, maybe not. We all knew what the rules of horse racing were, and nobody broke the rules.”

The rules, however, are changing, thanks in part to Eight Belles’ death. More than 10 states have adopted a steroid ban, including Kentucky, where Gov. Steve Beshear enacted an emergency order last week that outlaws anabolic steroids.

Porter is pleased with the progress to address drugs and medication, but is worried support will wane when the public’s attention is diverted.

“I don’t think we’ve done anything really but form some committees, and it’s already drifted away,” Porter said.

Porter thinks the federal government should mandate change and force the industry’s hand by creating a national racing commission.

“We need a commissioner,” Porter said. “We need to have everybody accountable to one (governing body).”

Porter has created an Eight Belles Foundation, which will benefit horse rescue and medical research. Churchill Downs Inc. has donated $25,000 to the fund, and the track will rename a stakes race on Derby Day in her honor.

“It’s going to make the racing game better for all of her equine peers,” Jones said. “They might not have to go through some of the things that horses in the past have. The game is much better now than it was 50 years ago, but it’s going to be better and better and better.”

Hey Lorraine and Nancy,

Debra is here visiting me for the weekend and we went to Philly Park today to see Coby race. I always try to catch him when I can get there. He's such a cutey (you know I have a "thing" for greys)!! We were both rooting him on and he ran an awesome race.

Lorraine....he looks like his color is getting a little lighter or is it my imagination??

Congratulations!!

Shelley

SHELLEY ~ thanks for the info on Coby...you probably needed a "grey fix" now that our pal Boxy is out of the running for a while. HOW IS HE DOING?

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 8

All calls this week will be made in honor of the best friend the horses ever had, John Hettinger. His dream was to see the end of horse slaughter. Being one of the earliest advocates of this legislation, he worked tirelessly giving his time, money and resources towards his goal. John passed away this weekend without ever seeing his dream become a reality. We must continue his efforts and ensure that all the years he spent are honored with success.

This is a VERY important week…….the House will be back in session and we should see our official co-sponsor list jump considerably

Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list with their names is on the Db and the Wiki. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. We now have 46 committments which is great!! Now is the time to put pressure on those that have not yet gone “red”

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. It is not necessary to answer complicated questions or try to explain the bill. Sometimes "less is more"!!

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!! And now, also do it for John!!

Thanks,

Shelley and Deb

Nancy,

Boxy is doing okay but will be out for some time. I took Deb to see him at NJ Equine today and I will let her tell you about her visit!! They brought him out so she was up close and personal with my boy!!

As for as my grey fix, Nickel is back racing (he's my other grey) and he actually won his first race back. I spend a lot of time with him at the barn so that helps considerably!!

Shelley

Posted by: ShelleyA at September 8, 2008 12:56 AM

46 commitments! Good good good! Let's make that number RISE!!!!!

Leaving for music momentarily - will be spreading all the news there with flyers galore imploring everybody to CALL THEIR CONGRESSPERSON asking them to cosponsor HR 6598.

As I say in the flyer, "It would be a bloody shame if the legislation doesn't pass this session."

Until tomorrow . . .

LIVING PROOF . . .

Hiya, FsOB! Yes, let's hope that the alarm clocks chime for Congress tomorrow.

Joe Shelton's blogs this weekend have really been thought-provoking. I am so disappointed to read that Manny Phelps was given a $150 gas card by someone (or some corporation, perhaps from Belgium) in Canada. I have always put our neighbours to the north on a pedestal. Can someone please refute or confirm that Manny Phelps is related to Michael Phelps? I find that hard to fathom and hope it is not true.

I hope that Hariette will describe for us what the ceremony was like for Eight Belles today at Churchill. How sad that such a lovely filly died so young. She really was "A Candle in the Wind", gone far too soon.

#### To Barb M.: My thoughts are with you. It must have been a comfort to Nala that you were with her when she passed over. I've lit candles for your sweet, courageous dog.
To Donna: My sympathies to you as you are confronted by Peanut's passing.
To Sandra: Please tell Chief that he needs to impose some order in the Thunder Support Group, OK? I sure hope you feel better and get some answers soon, Sandra.
RIP, John Hettinger, a visionary man. ####

Thanks Nancy and Shelley for your thoughts. Shelley I think Coby is getting lighter. He is just so adorable to me; maybe because he still has such a babyface. He runs his heart out though and gives his all. I think he did well today considering he was going against some oldsters.

Have a good night all and take care.

Posted by: MargieinNM at September 8, 2008 2:29 AM

Alex, I was saddened to read your update tonight, so sorry for the breakdown. I am glad Blackie came home OK, no matter how he ran. Perhaps I am out of line in saying this, but he has given so much, and with his advancing age, wish he would be retired very soon, each time he races, I worry so. The first bet I ever placed on a horserace was on him in the Breeder's Cup, and it was a very successful one. Just want him safe.

Thanks.

Loving Barbaro today and every day. Lighting his candles. Awed by the people who now work at rescues ... because we asked 'em to. Because we fell in love with the big, bay colt. And all because of Barbaro.
