Barbaro Updates: 675

updates are now here.

Update 3989: A pleasant afternoon spent at the sales barns at Woodbine looking at yearlings that will sell tomorrow. This is the first time I have actually "inspected" horses for a sale. I learned quite a lot in a short period of time! Since Better Talk Now is stabled in the stakes barn just by the sales barns I also went over to see how he was doing (very relaxed with his crew in attendance at feedtime).

For all things racing at Woodbine this weekend, check Jen's blog: DRAMA.

Update 3988: A pleasant morning's work at Woodbine. We had seven sets, four before the break and three after the break. The three after the break all went to the gate for some schooling. All went nicely.

I had a long break between my first four and final three. After visiting the kitchen to get my coffee and hanging out with Brian Lynch (rider) and Joey, who both work for Bryan Lynch (trainer) I went over to the stakes barn to see Fen and Better Talk Now. It was good to catch up and to see how well Blackie looks. He looks ready for his race here on Sunday!

Update 3987: We have a very strong day of racing here at Woodbine on Sunday with a pair of Grade 1s and a Grade 2 race. Better Talk Now is coming up from Fair Hill to run in the Northern Dancer. Lets hope he relishes the turf here, wins and returns for the International. The "co-feature" is the Woodbine Mile, which is headed by Kip Deville: Kip Deville vs. Ventura in Woodbine Mile. We are running The Niagara Queen in the Grade 2 Canadian.

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

Good morning, frens! For all those in Hanna's path, please be safe...

SOS Equines - new horses, ship Sept. 7

"Since SOS still has so many sponsored horses, these ones will need homes before any fundraising can be done. Better yet, people will see their picture, put in an application and do an outright adoption. If anyone is interested, please go to www.sosequines.org. The applications are in the 'about' section. The horses are located in Washington state."

It's TGIF day FOBs

Wow - Hanna is passing by the east coast of Florida and we're feeling it. I'm surprised because I thought it was going to be too far out in the ocean to have much effect other than high tides. Right now we're getting lotsa rain and wind. I hope we don't lose power. I'm going to head out to work and pray there's no flooding. Hurricane Ike is the one that really has us all scared. I hope the experts are wrong about the projected intensity of that one.

Have a good day everyone and those on the wouth east coast of the US - stay safe with Hanna coming.

Good morning, fellow Fans!

Foggy/cloudy here in the Downeast this morning, but my thoughts and prayers go out to all those in the path of Hanna and her successors. Stay safe!

I will be awaiting the results of the Woodbine races, Alex. Also making the trip North from Fair Hill is Street Sounds for the Seaway Stakes against Akronism from Tim Ritchey's stable. Here's to safe trips for all!

Enjoy your Fridays!

Good morning, FOB

To all in the path of the hurricane, please stay safe.

To all who honor Barbaro's memory, please light some candles for him. He is under 120 with several going out today. Thank you.

Alex, thank your this site and for all you do to help horses in need.

Hiya, FsOB! The fog is just burning off the Thames right now. It was a "white-out" earlier, though. I'll never look at fog again and not thing of Lost in the Fog. May all of our FsOB in FLA and the Carolinas stay safe today, the rains will reach us in coastal southern New England tomorrow. TGIF!

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyKey, Genny, Sky and the rest of the fabulous family in Equine Heaven.

For them:

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 1

Although Congress has now recessed until September 8, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list is on the DB and the Wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts. We now have 46 committments which is great!! They cannot not be added to the official co-sponsor list until session resumes.

There is still a very small window of time to try to see your representatives while they are in their home district. Many will be out on the campaign trail so should be easy to find. Below is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them.

http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/legislation/110_equinecruelty_hr6598.pdf

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We've been asked to make sure they know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. It is not necessary to answer complicated questions or try to explain the bill. Sometimes "less is more"!!

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have have done a fabulous job of setting the groundwork and it seems that we're off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO'S VOICE..let it be heard!!!!

Thanks,

Hi all, I have been very busy the past couple of days. I am excited and pleased to tell you all about my new baby...she is 10 weeks old....her name is Jesse....she is a german shephard puppy. She is just the cutest thing with her pointy face and her standing up ears. Jake isn't quite sure about his new little sister, she's ok as long as he is the only one doing any sniffing....get my meaning? He is not having any of that rolling around and pouncing stuff, he is much too dignified...he just turns his head away as though he is dismissing her. They actually are doing really well considering she has been home for only about a day and a half at this point. She is quickly learning that Jake is the boss and she had better remember it...Jake has to go out the door first, gets treats first. He will do more training for Jesse than I will I believe. Finally she is eating, she was very unhappy with the food she was sent home with so I think it was new to her, her belly was rejecting it as well...now she is on real puppy chow and loves it. Keeping Jake away is the trick with that, he will be getting all fat eating hers as well as his.
Anyway, we've been thinking about a puppy...separately. We hadn't even really discussed it - Terry & I, but since I heard Erin tell me that Jake needed a puppy in the beginning of May, I have heard that same statement several more times....from Erin, from friends and even from some of you. Last week on my way home from Rachel & Aaron I was driving very near to St Joseph's (I realized later) and I got this picture in my mind of a puppy, I thought it was a boy because I also saw a name spelled specifically Jesse. I suppose that I associated that spelling with males named Jesse. But then that evening, just about an hour later, Terry and I were talking about Aaron and how cool he is and how Shawn Michael got the gazing stare like I had...and Terry changed the subject and said that Jake had told him that he needed a puppy. I said a curse word and went inside. I knew at that point it was reality and I needed to absorb that for a moment. I came back out and asked for his info..he said he knew what the puppy looked like too, and it is a girl and he said he knew her name. He made me tell first. I told him a german shephard puppy, male, named Jesse. He said a german shephard, female named Tina (Tina is the name of one of Erin's angels that she spoke to often, that name has come up to us rarely, but meaningfully when it does). Then yesterday was the day we were to go get Jesse....we weren't exactly sure where she was but we knew when we saw her we'd know. I still was thinking She was a He....until we got to talking to lots of people and every person said that a girl would be better suited for the situation, that she would not be difficult to train with Jake...So then we found her, and she was definitely Jesse....Terry and I agreed that she didn't look like a Tina, I wasn't trying to take over though, I was willing to discuss other options...because Jesse is the name that came in my mind, but that name isn't associated with anything particular....but he said she looked like a Jesse to him as well.
Since yesterday afternoon, coming home and introducing Jesse to Jake...settling in to home...I have heard Miss Erin tell me quite a few times in her little excited tone of voice 'she is just sooooooo cute mommy!'. I know she led us right to her, I know now is the time we were supposed to find her...it all lines up just so we can see that Erin is driving the bus. She has always been more in charge then I was ever willing to admit, now I am so overwhelmed by how in charge she really is...I can no longer deny it.

damn: the Curse of the Double-Post!!! Mea Culpa

Posted by: jonnagrey at September 5, 2008 1:58 PM

Don't get to post much because I spend every spare minute with Nala, she had a bad day yesterday and is not feeling good, please pray for her. She is the bravest dog and we are praying she can stay with us a little longer.

Also hoping we don't lose electric today from Hanna, getting tons of rain and wind right now.
I finally found a hurricane proof barn to take Over Enough to if hurricane Ike comes here as predicted as a category 3 or 4, devastating. He has been thru 3 hurricanes before and I normally turn him out, where he lives there is hundreds of acres. But he is still on stall rest, can't run and needs to be safe in a hurricane barn.

Posted by: Barb m in Florida at September 5, 2008 2:06 PM

###That's okay, Jonna--the post is worth a double shot ;o)

###According to the weather news I just saw, Hanna is "a right mess" of a storm. Mostly storms are compact and she is just all over everywhere. Can't get her "stuff" together, so what the heck, just go along and drag stuff with her.

###Hang in there, those in Hanna's way. Or NEAR Hanna's path.

###Coolish weather here--a little breeze and I'm in my summer jammies and thinking a light robe would be a good idea.

Lesson Sunday, gotta ride (practice up, even if it's wrong ;o) but will turn the horse out to "get it out of his system" first. He's full of prunes after a week in the barn.

###Have a good and safe day, everyone--equines, canines, felines, and humines alike.

Good morning Frens, It's a beautiful sunny morning here in southeast PA, hard to believe the rain and winds from Hanna will hit us late tonight and be here all day tomorrow. I'm praying for safe passage for those in the paths of Hanna and Ike, especially our FOB Janice who alone takes care of hubby Den.

JOE JOE JOE:
************************************************
Friday, September 5th...
A friend from Vacaville brought us a black cat with giant yellow eyes. She is feral (the cat, not our friend) and when transferring her to a bigger cage so she can sit in our yard and get used to the joint, she escapes. Takes a swipe at my arm and almost opens an artery. I think well that is the last we see of her. But at 2:00 this morning there is a loud crying outside our bedroom window. The dogs begin barking. I give the black cat with giant yellow eyes a can of wet food. Delicious tuna, so smelly other cats from blocks away are suddenly in our yard. A nice cool night. Bright stars, and snores come from 104 horses. On the 47 incher a lady tries to sell me a beautiful pearl necklace. Ice cold orange juice from Simply Orange. The feral black cat finishes her tuna and sneers at me. No one has taught her table manners. Back to bed for a couple more hours of precious sleep. Bang bang bang from the second barn. Horses begin to scream. Neighbors quickly put out their For Sale signs. I find Copper Star, we call him Cop, but other times we call him Rock Star, and he is cast against his wall. His face in a pile of his own poop. Exactly what you want to find at almost 3:00 in the morning. I wrap a lead rope around his hind leg and pull until he is free. Cop stands, and I bring him outside to hose off his face. Race horses are now fully awake. A dusty stampede. Back to bed for precious sleep. Woooosh.... the sounds of a broken water float. Horses in the south field, which is just outside our bedroom, laughing and playing while water spills from their tub. Installing a new water float, exactly what you want to do at almost 4:00 in the morning. Back inside, and a lady on the 47 incher is trying to sell me sunglasses. Only a 130 pair left. Might as well make coffee. Say hello to Friday...

And now the sun is up and both barns have been grained. The mare motel and round pens have also been grained. Four old photos loaded below. The ranch truck filled with 16 bales of alfalfa. Dogs have been given their milk bones. A kitten named Zoe laps up her special formula. New leg wraps on the race horse Seeking Answers. Flies are starting their engines.

Later there is employment at another ranch where the big bucks are earned. We will greet a thoroughbred gelding from a feed lot in Wilton. There is an appointment with an after school young girl who wants to meet Pony Boy. A trip to Woodland to fill up 5 gallon containers of regular gasoline for the old ranch truck. Maybe an extra shot of caffeine in my latte from Starbucks.

A special hello to Brianna Brand, and best of luck at your show this weekend. A special hello to Tyler in Roseville, and thank you for the poem. And a special hello to Lisa in Oakland, and your new horse is centerfold material. Lisa went to Golden Gate Fields and bought a young gray gelding with injuries. What a change in direction his life has turned...

Enjoy your hot 95 degree Friday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Donna, am very sorry about the loss of Peanut. ###Nala has all the FOBs thoughts and prayers. ##Anne, so happy that you got a sweet little Shepard puppy. I like her name. I love pups. Would like to always have a pup around. ###Robyn, Chief says to tell you he did go to the Thunder Support Group. But it started thundering and everyone left. It was a stampede all trying to get out the door at the same time. The meeting has been re-scheduled. ###Went to dr. again! had more blood tests done. They cant find out what is wrong. I try to donate as much money as I can to my M.D. as she is buying a 3,000 acre ranch for her horses and I know she is needing money. ha.

And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd as you know you take me to where angels walk.
As Angel Dee says "It is AFFIRMED!"

To borrow one of Alex's wonderful terms, this week has left me rather "knackered", sigh. . . .

Just saw that a certain Mrs. McCain's dress cost $300,000, heavy sigh . . . .just think how many horses and equine pals could be helped with that!!
Doesn't make sense to me.

Prayers going out to all in the path of the various storms, and always prayers and hugs going out to all with heavy hearts.

Holding hands, paws, hooves with the entire Barbaro Nation!

Prayers and Hugs,

Ky. governor bans steroids in race horses
50 minutes ago

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP)—Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear signed an emergency regulation Friday banning steroids for the state’s thoroughbred and standardbred races.

The new rules go into effect immediately and ban anabolic steroids from being present in the blood of any horse that’s racing. Horse regulators approved the sweeping ban earlier this month.

Big Brown had steroids in his system before winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. It was not illegal in any of the Triple Crown states this year, and Big Brown’s trainer, Rick Dutrow, has said he only uses it to brighten his horses’ coats and increase their appetites.
