Barbaro Updates: 671

updates are now here.

Update 3973: A fun afternoon at the rodeo in Toronto. Laura survived her bull ride, but not long enough for the eight seconds. This was my first "behind the scenes" view of a rodeo and I have to say I was pleasantly impressed with how things work. The "stock" animals all looked very healthy too!

The Nick Zito trained Anak Nakal took the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby: Anak Nakal Nabs Pennsylvania Derby.

Update 3972: Gorgeous day at Woodbine! We had 8 sets - 4 before the break and 4 after the break one of which went to the gate. I think I must have galloped about 15 miles so I'm now pretty knackered. Off to the rodeo with Laura who is a freelance exercise rider at Woodbine. She's riding a bull - I might be driving back to Woodbine. Getting on an animal knowing with absolute certainty you will fall off is a little whacky.

Update 3971: Happy Labor Day.

A terrific win yesterday by Breeders Stakes winner Marland in the Saranac at Saratoga. Another wire to wire ride from Richard Dos Ramos in his first ride at Saratoga: Marlang Wires Rivals in Saranac.

Curlin seems well after his win on Saturday. Plans for his next start will be announced after his first breeze back: Relaxed Mood at Curlin's Saratoga Barn.

Update 3970: Peppers Pride scratched today, aborting her effort to break the record for consecutive wins. The track was getting sloppy: Peppers Pride Scratched From Record Try.

Update 3969: A gorgeous afternoon spent at the races, but not Woodbine. The quarterhorse races at Pivoc Downs. There are about three more weekends of racing at Picov Downs before the end of the "meet". It will be the end of an era as there will be a new track opening in its place for next year. This is the second time I have visited, and its just an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. Plenty of the horsemen have Woodbine connections. A few of the jockeys are exercise riders at Woodbine. One jockey is a very recently retired Woodbine jockey.

I did run into Dave Landry. He is a photographer who I had previously met at Woodbine and also brother of jockey Robert Landry. He had heard the interview I had had on the local sports radio station. He was pretty impressed with it and apparently there were plenty of calls into the show afterwards. Great PR for the slaughter issues I think.

Update 3968: Racing's focus today switches to New Mexico, and Peppers Prides attempt at something very very special, seventeen consecutive wins: Wait is over for Peppers Pride.

Found on Paulick Report.

Help will be needed in the wake of Hurricane Gustav: SOS Gustav Cat 3 Hurricane.

Update 3967: A busy and warm morning here this morning at Woodbine. We had nine sets. Five before the break and four after the break. No gate schoolers. All my horses galloped nicely, so a fun morning despite a lack of sleep (went out a little last night).

Lots of people gratulating us on Curlin's win yesterday. It's nice to be a part of the team, even if we are a remote part of the team. Anyway, it will be interesting to see where Curlin goes next. He had to dig deep for yesterday's win, but he certainly showed a lot of heart in getting the job done!

Update 3966: Media coverage of yesterday's Woodward:
CURLIN GRINDS IT OUT
Curlin notches Woodward win
Curlin Cashes in Woodward, Nears Cigar
Curlin 'consummate professional' in Woodward

Update 3965: Curlin, who was put to task today by front running Past the Point, did manage to run down the front runner and win by about a length in today's Woodward. He is now second on the all time money list.

Update 3964: Hall of Fame rider, Gary Stevens, offered a ringing endorsement for the new Santa Anita surface. This surface is scheduled to play host to the Breeders' Cup in a couple of months: Stevens endorses overhauled Santa Anita surface.

Update 3963: Quite a busy morning again here at Woodbine, with eight sets. For some reason it was one of those mornings that seemed exhausting when it really was not! Gorgeous weather here too. All the horses I galloped galloped very nicely. We had a couple of sets school in the gate, no problems there either. All in all a decent morning's work. We have a runner here this afternoon in the tenth race. Course much of our attention will be focused on Saratoga and Curlin!

Update 3962: Churchill Downs is reducing it's stakes purses, due to a decline in bettng handle, for it's fall meet: Churchill Makes Deep Cut in Fall Stakes.

Today Curlin will attempt to get one step closer to the record for total earnings: Curlin overwhelming favorite in Woodward.

Tomorrow Peppers Pride will attempt to break the modern day record for consecutive wins: Peppers Pride still on track for historic run.

Will be at Tim's barn tomorrow with Donna Quinn and hopefully her mom (who is SUCH a sweetheart...). Can't wait. Should be going to Quest...Nemo - my "gentleman caller" has been calling me since Thursday night and I want to be sure he's OK...kids on Thursday were AWESOME...my buddies Madison (who confessed to the therapist and me that she likes one of the boys who rides at the same time she does...) and Jonathan (NO WAY - is his favorite phrase) just let their megawatt smiles light up the afternoon cloudy sky.

CHECK IT OUT:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 29, 2008

Shocking Choice by John McCain

WASHINGTON-- Senator John McCain just announced his choice for running mate: Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. To follow is a statement by Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund.

“Senator McCain’s choice for a running mate is beyond belief. By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain has clearly made a decision to continue the Bush legacy of destructive environmental policies.

“Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska’s coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming. Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration.

“This is Senator McCain’s first significant choice in building his executive team and it’s a bad one. It has to raise serious doubts in the minds of voters about John McCain’s commitment to conservation, to addressing the impacts of global warming and to ensuring our country ends its dependency on oil.”

###

The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund (www.defendersactionfund.org) provides a powerful voice in Washington to Americans who value our conservation heritage. Through grassroots lobbying, issue advocacy and political campaigns, the Action Fund champions those laws and lawmakers that protect wildlife and wild places while working against those that do them harm.

**********************************************
"...TO THE RIGHT OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION...."
OH LORD.
What was McCain thinking? Wait?! Did I use the word "thinking?" Silly me...

I wasn't going to vote for JM anyway. But I think this will really damage his chances against Obama.

JOE: God Bless Your Rescuers, dear God:
****************************************************
Saturday, August 30th... Yesterday in a Northern California chat room, 4 generous horse lovers came together to save the life of a young thoroughbred stallion. The young stallion was in a bad situation near Petaluma, and not once in his entire life has he had a halter on. It took Ryan Andrews and Stephanie Diaz less than an hour to get him inside a trailer. The horse is now with our friend Tara in Vacaville. When the colt first arrived he was a tiny bit nuts. But last night he came to Tara and enjoyed his first ever grooming session. A big Thank You to Ryan Andrews, Stephanie Diaz, a girl named Morgan, and a girl named Tess. And a big Thank You to Tara, who will do all the halter training. Castration takes place next week.

I told you about a ranch full of Arabians who need new homes, and your response was greater than hoped for. I told you about a ranch foreclosure with 30 thoroughbreds, and now only 9 thoroughbreds remain.

Hoping to keep the momentum rolling. A large thoroughbred breeding farm goes out of business in October, and all of their horses need a new place to live. Two stallions, lots of pregnant mares, lots of yearlings and weanlings. All of these horses are free, and Tbfriends will provide transportation. You must pay for gasoline.

Recent adoptions include the black gelding McCoy, who goes to live with a family in Davis. McCoy has a sore knee and a sore shoulder. He will spend the rest of his life doing very little. There is grass to munch on and an older mare to hold hands with. McCoy living the good life...

On this last weekend of August, there is employment at another ranch. Tomorrow a race horse comes to us from a track in Los Angeles. We will help load 3 thoroughbred yearlings, and send them off to their new homes in the Reno Sparks area. It seems the heat wave is over. A nice cool ocean breeze last night, and dusty horses romped in our fields. Poop on top of poop. A special get well to Jenny Hartman, who had dental surgery yesterday. A special get well to Becky Coombs, who had ankle surgery yesterday. Enjoy your long holiday weekend, and be sure to hug your horses. Strong coffee with praline cream is from Peets. Chocolate cupcakes were made by Hostess. Fleetwood Mac on the oldies station. Hard to believe yet another summer has passed us by. 116 shopping days left until Christmas...

### A Personal post:

Dear Frens, Please send prays of intersession, for justice, grace, and favor for me.

On Tuesday, Sept 2nd, I will be attending a (forced) binding arbitration meeting which will end my marriage of 24 years, and determine whether or not I will be able to keep my home. If I lose my home, I will have nowhere to go where I may keep my two older dogs, four cats and bird. I am so afraid that I will have to put them down or surrender them to a shelter.

Forgive my recent absence from Barbaronation. I have not had the time or energy to participate, here, or even to visit Thisgoodplace. However, my heart is always with you, remembering our beloved BARBARO, and championing his causes.

Please just pray, if you would please. At this point in time, I am so afraid.

Thank you.

Your FOB Fren, O

Praying for Curlin and all who race today.

Padme, please convey our love to Tim and Penny, and to Donna and her mom. I'd be very pleased if you'd give darling Luke a big hug for me, and kiss his nose.

Jonna..how about chartreuse today? it's probably more complimentary to your hiar than mine, but what the heck

Nice to see so many here who haven't been for a while

Happy Birthday, Dr. Dean! Hope this year is the best ever and milestones are made to end laminitis. Thank you for all you do. You will always be a hero.

Happy Birthday SusanE and Maureen :) Hope all our birthday wishes come true.

Hello everyone,

Please take a moment this evening at 7pm Eastern to say a few prayers for the veterinarians and support personnel working on laminitis research.

I am unable to visit here again today so if someone could post another reminder perhaps in the late afternoon, it would be most appreciated.

Or, Alex, can you put a note above regarding this?

Make it a blessed, and good, day my friends.

Otherlyn,

am praying that God has mercy on you and your animals. but just in case it doesn't go your way, please think about looking into rescues ASAP in your area who would be willing to hold your crew until you could find a suitable place for all of you...or even board them at the vets for a short time....

there are also sites that could help you find pet-friendly apartments, like

Best of luck,

Off topic question. If McCain/Palin win the election, and something happens to McCain, does that mean Nancy Pelosi steps in as Veep? Pardon my ignorance of line of succession rules.

Posted by: MargieinNM at August 30, 2008 6:13 PM

Hi Margie!!! the Vice Prez takes over the presidential duties. Just as Lyndon Johnson did when President Kennedy was assassinated.

that would make Palin the President until the end of the term. The SOH takes over in the event something happens to the President and Vice President

We've got your back. I cannot believe that an arbitrator would be so cruel...sending out prayer and sheltering reiki to you and all your beasts.

What a mess divorce (or whatever you call it) is. It should be lots more difficult to marry, and lots easier to split up, IMHO.

Lean on us a little, Fren. We're here, and so many have had similar or same circumstances.

(My swine ex left the car running in the driveway, in which his new girlfriend was sitting, and tore through the apartment taking the most fine and valuable of the oriental rugs we had so lovingly collected and I had done repair work on many of the really old ones.

His response to my objection
was a big old bitch slap across the face. And thus began the period of my life know as The Poor Little Blithering, Drooling, Matchgirl...)

Presidential Succession Question:
The order of Succession:
President
Vice President
Speaker of the House
President Pro Tempore of the Senate
The cabinet offices, in order, starting with Secretary of State.

If any of the above are foreign born, they may not succeed--hence Henry Kissinger and Madeline Albright could not have succeeded. The children of US Military personnel born overseas are still considered to be American Citizens.

This is why when Spiro Agnew resigned in 1973, Richard Nixon tapped Gerald Ford, then when Nixon resigned, Ford became the only President of the United States ever not to have been elected either as President or Vice-President.
Hope that helps (I taught Social studies for 13 years)!

I forgot, too, to congratulate Lael Stables on their second win of the day - Scenery Change won the 6th at Delaware. I'm happy to see this as she had about as much trouble as a horse could in her previous attempt to start - something in the gate caused her to rear, dump her jockey and run off, after which she jumped the rail and sprinted around the entire turf course! Glad she survived to race and win another day!)

HARRIETTE - he looked fine, just that the fractions were very fast and he was running 4th most of the way and had to dig in to pass Past the Point and draw away. Must be pretty hot and/or humid there today ~ his groom was sponging down his face in the winner's circle.

Praise the Lord - I am full of gratitude to my neighbors. Spent 3+ hours w/my horses today and returned to find my beloved Amigo GONE ! Unbelivable storms last nite has pushed open a gate - and I had not noticed. Panic set in ..... I went door to door connecting w/the few who were home ........ crying ..... leaving my card w/cell number... frantically looking. I didn't see how he could have gone far. Soon - a call - "we've got your dog !!"
Someone found him - and took him to a neighbors down the block ! Oh my - I've just consumed many drops of Rescue Remedy ! I am amazingly grateful !!!!
HUGS to all ............

Today, went back to Quest...Nemo had been in my head for the last 2 days...so I spent time with him and Harley...and the ever handsome (and HUGE) Legend. Legend is an Arabian and his human is the volunteer coordinator.

Worked with 2 children today...first one...well I got a shock when I looked at his father...turns out I used to work with the father in my previous corporate job...hadn't seen him for about 4 years. He was floored ...he just stared and said..."you look really great..." Must be the reddish-blonde hair I have now...:) He was the LAST person I ever thought I'd see again...he is on the Board of Quest...his little boy is a doll...beautiful eyes and another little one with a megawatt smile...will try to work for alittle bit next SAturday to see him again before leaving for New Jersey for a chant session with KD (hooray!!!).

SAVE THE WOLVES and then some . . .

one more message before departing for music - repeating previous pleas in this regard - which I started days before the Rep VP was named -

sharing info from Defenders of Wildlife - please take action to SAVE THE WOLVES!

http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=27920.1

This alert asks us to tell our Reps to support HR 3663 - To close a loophole in federal law which currently permits the shooting of Alaskan wolves and other wildlife from airplanes and helicopters.

This bill already has strong bipartisan support in the House of Representatives -- now we must ensure that this important bill gets passed.

Please take a moment to contact your Representative in Washington, DC and urge him or her to support this important wildlife-saving legislation today. (There's a list of current cosponsors in post 2 of that Thread.)

Together, we’ll continue to fight for sensible wildlife management -- and end the senseless slaughter of wolves by airborne hunters.

Info re PAW act:

Bill Number: H.R. 3663
Bill Status: Pending
Bill Sponsor(s): Rep. George Miller (D-CA)

SHORT TITLE AS INTRODUCED:
Protect America's Wildlife Act of 2007

OFFICIAL TITLE AS INTRODUCED:
To amend the Fish and Wildlife Act of 1956 to establish additional prohibitions on shooting wildlife from aircraft, and for other purposes.

Prayers to all in the path of what looks like a truly crappy hurricane. I am glad to live somewhere--as economically depressed as it is--that isn't moved away by floods, mudslides, tornadoes, or wildfire.

I do have to get up on the porch roof from year to year to shovel that off, but otherwise...that stuff melts.

So to all and any FoB in the path, and to those who have horses at risk....I send prayer and support. We will be watching with hope that it is downgraded by the time it makes landfall...

I cannot IMAGINE what a negative impact this will have on the Republican Convention, and (cough, cough) just allow me a tiny, tiniest of all snickers that this may throw a BIG wrench in those maroon's plans...

####Dont forget to check out TVG later today. They will be showing Peppers Pride from Ruidoso Downs. She is quite the horse. And tomorrow, also from Ruideoso Downs, Hearts Wide Open will be doing her thing. This is quarter horse racing at its best.

I always wonder why so much stuff in life has to be so sad and timing sucks.

MHR was having a get-together over this holiday weekend. A chance to visit with the horses and just have a good time. In approx two days, two of their horses have passed away. Its like, Geez, couldnt this have happened sometime later on, if at all. There is never a right time for sadness and heartbreak.

Sorry, I seem to be rambling this morning.

Everyone have a great Sunday and enjoy the time spent with loved ones, human and animal, alike.

RIP Leageur and Wally. Big hugs to all at MHR.

Ruidoso is expecting heavy rains today and tomorrow. Peppers Pride may have to run in slop. Even up here in the north we are socked in.

Beasty Gustav is heading right for Houma, Baton Rouge, Lafayette. The drive from Houma to Lafayette has to be one of the prettiest and scenic drives in the country. It's lowlying at best and they are going to get lambasted.

Alex, continued gratitude for having us here.

Hoepfully, as it hits land, it will weaken somewhat.

Sorry to hear about all the rain in Ruidoso. I was there over Memorial Day and it was beautiful.

OMG poor Steph and all at MHR - left her a vm yesterday after reading about losing Leaguer and that Wally was in trouble - and now Wally is gone too. OY. But we who are The Guardians have to keep popping back up like those clown toys, to do what we have to do for our other precious charges . . . May the gathering this weekend serve to celebrate the lives of those lost as well as those in the care of MHR now and those re yet to find their way there . . . and may the shared grief of all the attendees forge an even greater bond of love and friendship. Wish I could be there - but I WILL be there in spirit and then some, for Steph told me a while back that she would be playing my CDs for the Labor Day gathering. I hope my light-hearted material will entertain and help to ease the pain . . . which is precisely why I wrote it btw - the pain of my first crippled horse drove me to lighten up with music and laughter over 30 years ago . . . and I never looked back.

########
Last night I finally saw Lilly, the owner of our newest venue (in Chicago on Lincoln Avenue). Until last night we'd been working there with bartenders and never saw her at all. We knew eachother way back then, when my first crippled horse took me on the ride of a lifetime in this music bizz - she was one of the open mikers in the late 70's at The Earl of Old Town where Chicago's folk scene was still thriving. Hadn't had any contact all those years. When she and my partner Fred were arranging our gig schedule at her venerable joint [the building recently achieved Landmark status], I learned she has horses; Fred reported he had phoned her at the number she'd left for him to call, and she answered with "Call back in a half hour, I'm lunging a horse!" Then when we arrived for our first gig there the first Sat in August, I was thrilled to see wonderful horse pics up on the walls - obviously dressage/jumper horses. One of the pics was of this gorgeous "naked" chestnut horse (no tack, no rider) free jumping over a vertical - one of Lilly riding dressage - etc etc. We've been there every Tuesday this month (for an open run, no termination date, expected to run forever) with Fred hosting an open mike, and I kept hoping she would show up - FINALLY last night she did, while the four of us were delivering our trademark "Music From The American Subconsciousness" - and after the show we reconnected; started talking horses; she had seen my anti-slaughter flyers at our homebaseplace [when she had come in incognito to check us out before booking us] - she is a BIG RESCUER - has a 50 acre farm and rescues dogs and cats; she also has goats - no room for any more horses at present but I am going to work on her bigtime as and when appropriate - farm is an hour N of Chicago - she has FIVE Hanoverians that she bought at auction in Germany when they were foals, she raised and trained them - when she realized they weren't really happy doing dressage she quit competing and now "I just ride them all over the farm" she said - gave me her home/farm number and invited me to come ride - OY what a match made in horse heaven, wouldn't you say? Showed her a pic of Shanty (mare before last) that I carry with my gear - she told me to get her a copy and other horse pics and she will put them up as well. Stay tuned - I am really excited over this - even if we can't get her to take in a horse, she's a great resource for the cat and dog placements that pop up at the DB - will turn her into an FOB in short order or my name isn't CJ !

Sunday, August 31st...
I forget more than I remember. All the amazing stories that come with horses. Running inside to write notes to myself. I could tell you about 14 year old Lindy in Sacramento, who all by herself saved the life of a grandpa quarter horse stallion. I could spend an entire morning writing about April who lives in the Walnut Creek area. April raised enough money for a ruptured horse to be operated on. April is 17.

A 13 year old girl is Rowan, and she lives in Davis. Rowan and her young friends started the Yummy Dummy Chocolate Company, and from their profits Rowan sent Tbfriends enough money to buy special supplements for our hungry gelding Cope.

I could write about another young girl, only I am not allowed to say her name. She is 15, and door to door she went, asking neighbors for money. Her mare needed special surgery, and the girl was determined to make this happen. She held a Saturday car wash. On the internet she sold things from her bedroom which were no longer wanted. In 6 days the girl raised more than two thousand dollars, and surgery was performed on her mare.

The stories of unwanted horses who find new beginnings are endless. In the last few months there have been more than a hundred.

I told you how sight unseen horses needed new homes quick. Three teenage girls raised enough funds for an older thoroughbred gelding to live at a fancy joint in Reno.

Teenage girls from a high school volleyball team came up with enough money for the first 3 months board on an older thoroughbred mare. The boarding stable gave the girls a discount, and future monthly payments will be made by relatives of these girls.

A very giving family in Vacaville not only took a sight unseen thoroughbred into their home, they paid transportation expenses for 3 other horses.

A very giving family in Elk Grove not only took a sight unseen thoroughbred into their home, they also gave horse hauler Jennifer Wright a $60.00 gift card for dinner at Outback.

A girl 16 in Woodland, and she arranged for two sight unseen thoroughbreds to live at the home of her grandma. Twice a day the girl is there to feed and clean. One of the horses has an old laceration, and the girl scrubs the wound and keeps it fly free. She comes to my ranch and tells me these two horses are the best thing to ever happen to her.

I could tell you about a girl in Elverta, and how she earns money babysitting to pay for her horse. A family in Napa, and how they welcomed three very skinny thoroughbreds into their lives.

The stories come daily. Disney could make a movie. Enjoy your just right 85 degree Sunday, and be sure to hug your horses...

August 30 & 31 Cherokee Devotional

August 30

Regardless of how grownup we may appear, we are children at heart. We want to know what lies over the hill, what makes strange sounds, where a path leads, and what will happen if we do a certain thing.

A natural curiosity lives in all of us. It keeps us interested and inquisitive, alive and well-adjusted. Even our children think we can see around corners and find treasure--and we can.

If we could live life all over again, would we do it differently? In some areas--probably. Anyone who fails to see his own mistakes is in danger of making them again. But in most cases, it is a delight to sing and keep fear away that we have missed the most important parts of life.

My heart is good; these people do not tell the truth when they say their hearts are good.

Keokuk
Sac and Fox

August 31

A person totally dominated by his emotions is little different from a piece of paper lifted and tossed by the wind. Everything centers around caution--don't do this, don't say that--or an emotional explosion can take place.

None of us escape emotional extremes. We have cried our hearts out and laughed hilariously in all the wrong places. We have known melancholy and ragged nerves. But most of us know how to stabilize our feelings. The unstable times are when someone feels he has a right to blow. Without sadness or happiness we could be deadly indifferent, but to be blown about with every emotion is a waste of human spirit.

May the Lord bring you out of all your troubles. Trust your course with Him.

Sherry, so glad you found Amigo. What nice neighbors you have. When Chief was a lot younger he managed to get of the backyard several times. Once I was watching tv and I looked up and he was looking in the front porch windows. Gate blew down. Sometimes he would just slap the boards out of the fence and take off. It just causes a bit pit in your stomach. In desperation I put locks on all my gates, hot wire at the bottom of the fence and at the top as he could jump the 6 ft. fence. He hit the hot wire once (about 8 yrs) and has never gone within 3 ft of the gates or fence again. I hated to shock him but I ddnt want to scrape him off of the street either. Now since his stroke I like to know where he is even when he is inside. Ill be calling his name and look down and he is under the computer table. He is like "Im right here". My dog thinks I am unbalanced and maybe I am. The vet said to watch him as he could have another stroke. So now I am paranoid. As far as thunder if it is forecast I have cancelled dentist, doctors, and weddings and anything else that I might not be here for him. I know yole think I am unbalanced as Chief probably thinks I am. anyway, so glad Amigo is safe. Didnt mean to ramble on here but all I have is yole to talk to you that would understand.

Had a wonderful morning at Fair Hill with Donna Quinn and her mom, Vera...today was "kiss the horses" day. It is rare when I walk in the barn and EVERY horse sticks their noses in front of my face for a kiss...but every one...and I mean EVERY one...got one today. Today was one of those wonderfully perfect days.

We walked down to the exercise track...saw a group of Michael Matz's riders taking horses out for their workouts. Michael was a short distance away on the railing with his binoculars watching the workouts...we didn't approach him and we enjoyed ourselves.

Three riders came right in front of us and we started talking to them. The horse in the middle - well, we'd watched him work out this morning...and he looked...well...kind of familiar.

It was Nicanor...his rider admitted it was him and as soon as Donna and I started saying hello to him...he tossed his head and was loving the attention. Oh, He LOOOOOVED the attention...:)

He looked good...was in excellent spirits...in fact, he looks WONDERFUL...

Next time, Pepper. We'll be watching.

That dang Gustav is staying on course for Houma, LA. There is something about south Louisiana and her people that gets under your skin. Most of my time was in Cajun country. I fell in love with the friendliness of the people. And it's a genuine friendliness. We went out to eat one night in the swamp. My friend was concerned I wouldn't understand Cajun tongue. Well, I did. But the waitress kept saying, "Monsha" to me. Had no idea what that meant, until my friend explained that she was calling me mon cher.

Prayers that everyone in the storm's path stays safe. Aside from Hannah, there are 2 more unnamed storms out in the Atlantic.

Lyn: thanks for the answers re: Nic. Be still me heart!!!

To all, while I live in Colorado, I was born a New Orleanian and it will always be "home". My relatives are all there and in South Louisiana. Happily, lessons have been learned, and the area is a ghost town, but please continue to send good thoughts and prayers that way. I have talked to people all weekend long and they are so scared they will lose this place that is so special. No one has the emotional strength to go through more devastation again so soon. Please let the storm move through in the least destructie way possible. Please let the levees hold. It is still so fragile, and will soon be so tested.

Lisa Leach,

I have been thinking about you having your family and friends in New Orleans, along with ALL of the other people and animals in and around the area.

I will have positive thoughts and prayers for their safety and well being.

I cannot imagine how frail their spirits may be after such hardship previously and with the very real threat of even more hanging over them.

I wish them safety, comfort and the knowledge that many, many people love and care for them...

Laurie H: So good to see your post. Thanks for sending good thoughts down south, and way down yonder...That means a lot.

Hope you and yours and the Divine Miss M are doing well. Pictures needed.

Hello Lisa Leach,

Four weeks ago tonight, I got the dreaded phone call from the stable...Miss Montego was colicing.

I was sooo scared. My foot was shaking off the accelerator as I drove. The stretch of the road going to the stable is 55 mph. In "Laurie's World", this means 60-63 mph.

Of course I get behind two cars going 50 mph and it's a winding road.

So, I did a bad thing. (If there are any reader's aged 16 - 19 or so, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS AT HOME!) The shoulders of this road are paved...so, I drove the shoulder and went past the cars ahead of me. I figured my right turn was just a mile.....or two, up the road.

When I saw Montego in the arena being walked, she looked like an elderly mare. No sparkle or sass in her eyes.

I quickly ran into the arena and started walking her. Lisa, I've mentioned to others that I am not coordinated in the least. But here I was, crying with a runny nose, no Kleenex to my name, walking rather briskly so that she wouldn't drop, talking softly and silly to her, trying to reach back and pet her neck and withers all while not slowing down...

After the Vet visit, and an injectible muscle relaxant, it seems that she had gas colic. She is back to pulling me around as I graze her and has the sass back in her eye!

I do have plans to have photos taken of her. Her Personal Photographer/Aunt, Leslie in MN, will need to come down for a visit with her camera after Montego has a bath and good brushing. (Leslie is AMAZING with a camera!)

In the meantime, let me see if I can get some pics taken of her in her summer-glory and send them to you. She is sooo special, at least to me, and just a beauty!

Much love to you and yours Lisa! xxoo

# I just want to give an update from MAHr aboutthe horses rescued from Fairmount park. Everyone was moved to the permanent facility on Sat. OMG! What a place. 100 stall barn with a large indoor arena. almost 70 acres of pasture with wonderful safe fencing. The horses are adjusting to their new lives. Some are nervous and not wanting to eat good yet, but all in all real good. WHO goes there- a gelding we got is now pretty lame. He must have been blocked for the sale. Anyway he has a suspensory injury and the vet also thinks he has a chip. He will make a full recovery and then start his new training. The place is big enough that the rescue can rent out stalls and the place can pay for itself and enable the rescue to operate without worrying how to pay the note every month. we will be posting pictures of everyone soon and the website will be up and running. We are having a huge fundraiser at the barn with 2 chefs, a band to kick off everything, to introduce the place to everyone and to have a silent auction. We all feel really great about this venture and we hope to rescue and rehome many TB's that didnt have a prayer before. I will give details about our boots and jeans ball later. Thanks everyone who helped. Jen

Laurie H: well, now you are an experienced horse owner with your first colic. My guy, Jackthehorse, had gas colic so bad it moved things around inside, but the good news: it was a one time event. Years later, he has never had another bout, and is still here, grazing next to his lady love, Sugar (a beautiful percheron cross mare), who he fell in love with at first sight 15 years ago and adores just as much today. what a love story....

Did you hear the news: I am adopting Hope from MHR!!!! I am so excited...Jack and Sugar will have a beautiful percheron baby to look after and love....and so will I....It's very exciting.

Send pictures!!!

Had to post this, if you know of ANYBODY who can help!

MOLLY THE PONY vs GUSTAV THE HURRICANE
Sunday, August 31, 2008 8:53 PM
From:
"Fran Jurga"

Dear Friends of Molly the Pony,

(NOTE: You are receiving this message because you ordered a book from my
company, MOLLY THE PONY, about an amputee Katrina-survivor pony from
Louisiana.)

"Hurricane" was one word that Molly the Pony hoped she would never hear
again.

Well, guess what! Here we go again! The news for southern Louisiana is very
grim tonight and no one knows what tomorrow will bring. It has already
started raining.

Thank you all very much for all your calls and emails this weekend inquiring
about Molly's safety in the face of this scary storm.

You can rest assured that Molly the Pony (along with her pony pal Flossie to
keep her company) has been evacuated to high ground! She is in a safe place.

But please keep her 19 pony friends at the Kids and Ponies retirement farm
in mind, as they were not so lucky as Molly the celebrity amputee pony. In
spite of the mandatory evacuation order inside the Interstate 10 corridor,
the ponies will be riding out the storm at the farm, since there was no way
to evacuate 19 ponies with one truck and one little stock trailer.

If anyone knows of a way to get a donor or sponsor to supply a truck and
trailer for times like this, and so Molly can make some public appearances
beyond New Orleans, please let us know. Miss Kaye had to cancel Molly's
Washington DC trip to meet Iraq War veterans undergoing amputation
treatments at the Walter Reed Military Hospital and to the Arlington
National Cemetery, where she was to have been made part of an honorary horse
troop, because of the lack of reliable transportation.

So Molly's story may fit in one nice children's book, but in real life, it's
just not over yet.

To make a direct donation to the Kids and Ponies Foundation that supports
the farm, the elderly ponies, and pays Molly's vet bills and upkeep and
drives her around to hospital and schools, go to this PayPal link:

(You will need a PayPay account or a credit card to make the donation, which
is secure and will be deposited directly into the foundation's account.)

Or send a check to
Kids and Ponies - Molly's Foundation
156 Bertucci Lane
St. Rose, LA 70087

Thank you, and thanks for ordering the book. If you need more copies, or
were thinking about giving some for holiday gifts, you should order soon!
The second printing is going quickly! But let's get through Gustav first.

All the best,
Fran

BOXES..

the little boy looked calmly into the camera
and in his thick southern accent he said--
.''we made these memory boxes
..we put in all our bad things that happened to us..and good things we dream of..''
i love my memory box
but he added in a half whisper--

katrina never left

there have been countless heroes
..making boxes
of food,of fresh pressed clothes

there are countless heroes
unsung unspoken of
who fill boxes with carefully folded things
things that smell and taste of home
for sons and daughters far away
in a war

there are those this week
who have a box with fresh ashes to spread
SKY DIAMOND

there were two tender staff members of churhill downs
who laid a handmade oak box
carrying eight belles remains

strangers to her

they placed her box,
with all their love
her ashes
into the kentucky dirt

there are boxes friends fill with cards and t shirts
with Barbaro and windchill stiched onto
the sleeves ,threads pressed from tears
into like gossamer winged prayers
for flowered fields
and green grass
still
there is a stunning legacy to comprehend
fresh for me every time
i see Barbaro's sublime run and him at fair hill
and i can hardly breath
to see Nicanor
splendid on a grassy knoll
his eyes full of life and possibility
birds that chirp in the dawn
as his grooms prepare him for his breeze.

the mental toil
of those fleeing so uncomplaining
having lost every thing once already

their homes tonight with their beloved pets THIS TIME
and posseSsions IN ONE SACK OR SUITCASE
clutched in their arms
has made me
heart sick to anticipAte their grief and loss
for any loss they may endure

the large neck of the great bay
we recognize as Barbaro
leaps onto the page to remind me
that horse slaughter among other cruelties undefinable
is not done
.oh no
that there are those like that woman who will sell a horse through the pipe line mighty meak
SAVED BY INTEGRITY
and think nothing of it
that kind of expendability
is such a sad commentary of just what kind of inner landscape may exist?
what kind of human evolution?
yes the underbelly of darkness
that satiates the minds
closed long ago to love
fed by the blob of power and that stuff we call money
that cold nothingness
emptiness that never gets filled
assumptions
impatience
wounding
how a rip gets into a heart
boxed in ,
then
tissue gone limp

how a leader gets to not leading and lets a city drown
or a horse goes up a ramp onto a box car
truck
blood and muscle pressed in terror
all know the end is near
to slaughter

throwing things away put into a box

..the box we can make and fill like some ancient mariner
layering the stillness
just the rustle of papers and cottons
yarns
silver pins and threads and long needles

medallions that slip into the hands
as one opens and closes the box
of our choosing

what we put into that box
could last a long long time
dusted by herbs of rose and lavender cinnamon and lime
or evaporate like dust
with not even an after thought
yes
of our boxed in hearts
or flying hearts out of the box
the top spilled open in a wild moment of faith

stars grip the sky
looking down into the windows still open to evening air
and half open doors waiting for
that thing called hope

Barb - thank you for posting about Molly the Pony .... and the need for truck and trailer, etc. A golf tournament fundraising in the future, perhaps ???? Sigh - grave concerns for the other fur friends who needed to remain behind ......
You know - I complain alot about the Arizona summers, but we are so fortunate, indeed - that we don't have to deal with hurricanes, tornadoes - infrequent flooding, earthquakes !
IF you hear more about those left behind - please post. Hugs to you, Arizona friend.

## Barb - again me - isn't there some way to help, perhaps, the ponies left behind .......
Humane Service or someone must be able to get help in there - early tomorrow, before Gustav hits with full force ?????????
OY - how can I go to sleep, now ???????

I heartily concur with the decision of Pepper's Pride's connections to not run yesterday. What a shining example of "correct" thinking, putting the Horse's welfare and safety FIRST! I love this quote from her trainer about the decision: "...if it's sloppy and slick you increase your chance of injury or something else happening. It just wasn't worth it."

To all in need and everyone else here, my prayers and love go out to you. This family is incredible; the amazing things we have accomplished and will, the causes we champion and the love of all animals. We WILL win the fight!

COMMENTS TO CITY OF HICKMAN REGARDING PETER RABBIT - 32 yr old HORSE BEING EVICTED

PETER RABBIT'S STORY

Posted by: Soc at September 1, 2008 12:13 PM

###Those who live in hurricane territory are made of sterner stuff than this gal, and I applaud your grit and determination and pray for the safety of all. From what I'm getting on the news, apparently The Big "G" is moving westward and will not hit NOLA with the same ferocity of Katrina, which is a good thing--but the newscasters are standing around in the rain and wind--and we viewers try to see them through the spattered camera lenses (and as one guy during Katrina said as he was hanging on for dear life to a traffic sign that was leaning at a precarious angle in the wind, "This is STUPID"...'nuff said).

###Colic: I have experienced both colic and abscesses with Huey, my OTTB who is at this moment enjoying his breakfast with BFF Ryan, enjoying his, also. The colic was caused by a veterinarian giving too much phenylbutazone, slowing the gut and creating a problem. When I called this man to report the problem, he suddenly "wasn't available to me" and so I called another vet (who is now MY vet and the only one I will use) and he oiled Huey front and back and gave me strict instructions to keep all food away from him and call at 7:30 the following morning with "a report."

He then said, "Now, you can enjoy your evening. I am on call" and left my property.

I was up every two hours ("enjoying my evening," not) checking on Huey who nickered at me because he was HUNGRY--a good sign. I did a lot of cleaning and unpacking having just moved into the house a few months before.

At 7:30 a.m. I called to report one pile of horse poop and then the vet told me to give Huey a very GLOPPY bran mash, which I did.

And all has been right with him since.

Thank you, Cheeses.

###Again, prayers and floating thoughts to all in Gustav's path--and prayers to those who set foot to pavement, gas pedal or hoof to track today.

Happy Labor Day!!

Wrote my Peter Rabbit email...please do this today. They just have HAVE to see the wisdom in leaving these two old gentlemen together. I mean, how much longer can that sweet old horse live? It's not like he's 10...

####I worry for all in the path of this Gustav mess.

we won't even know the true effects on those damned levees for days...it is wonderful that federal legislation was passed that animal MUST be evacuated with citizens under such circumstances.

One of our volunteers is in Baton Rouge with Red Cross. I just know that Dennis thought to bring pictures of his greyhounds and whippets to get little kids talking. He is a wonderful, wonderful, guy...has done us many favors and the retired racers in need of transportation to groups from the east coast. I just love him...

####
Good to finally see the reappearance of our Martita.

####
Congratulations to the owner's of Pepper's Pride.
They DID NOT LET THEIR PRIDE get the best of them. An example to be followed: IT'S ALL ABOUT THE HORSE!

####
Laurie H. So glad that Montego seems to be fine now.

####
Lisa Leach! HOPE! OMG. How exciting. Grandma Stephanie will shed many tears when that "little" one leaves the "herd." But how wonderful for all concerned, in the long run...

Enjoy your holiday today, all...take care of each other.xxoo:j

"It's disappointing. I guess Mother Nature knows something we don't," the trainer said. "They've done a great job with the track, but it doesn't matter how good it is, if it's sloppy and slick you increase your chance of injury or something else happening. It just wasn't worth it."

Your immediate help is needed for Michigan's Thoroughbred racehorses!
SHAMEFULLY: After doing so for 11 years, in 2008, the Michigan Racing Commission refused to issue track licenses for CANTER MICHIGAN volunteers who used to walk the shed rows each week and through those years assisted thousands of horses that would have been picked up by kill buyers or auction/slaughter dealers. CANTER MICHIGAN received the Catalyst of the Year award in 2001 by the Michigan Horse Council for “Significant contribution to the Michigan horse industry”, and positive publicity on Michigan’s racing industry working with CANTER appeared in over 80 newspapers and magazines and televised stories including CNN.
EQUALLY SHAMEFUL: The ban of the rescue volunteers in the shed rows has been going on for two months during live racing and neither Pinnacle Race Course nor the racing trainers or their horsemen's organization have interceded with the Racing Commission to allow licenses for the CANTER rescue so their horses can have a chance at surgery, rehabilitation and life after racing.
MOST SHAMEFUL: The Commissioner did grant licenses to trainers who are well known auction/kill buyers.. While other tracks like Suffolk Downs and Delaware Park are exposing the kill buyer side of racing and penalizing trainers who sell horses to auctions/kill buyers, Michigan’s new self-described “first class” Pinnacle Race Course is doing the OPPOSITE!
I’ll let you ask them why because I do not know. Could this action have anything to do with a major Detroit television station’s November 2007 hidden camera investigation regarding running injured horses and entitled “One Race too Many” Could it be because I honestly replied to a Congressional request for information on injured Thoroughbred horses for the Congressional sub-committee hearing “Breeding, Drugs, and Breakdowns: The State of Thoroughbred Horseracing and the Welfare of th e Thoroughbred” on June 19 and supplied witness Allie Conrad, the CANTER-Mid Atlantic executive director, with information on horses that were injured or euthanized due to their participation in Michigan racing? Could it be because Michigan’s racing industry keeps racing’s dark secret and I did not?

JOE AND CATHY NEVER REST FROM THEIR LABORS....
***************************************************
Monday, September 1st...

All night winds have been strong from the north, and we are a dust bowl. We left the bathroom window open, and a mountain of dirt sits in our sink.

I told you about a ranch foreclosure with 30 thoroughbreds who need new homes, and now only 6 thoroughbreds remain. I told you about a ranch with 50 Arabians, and over the weekend several of those Arabians found a new place to live.

From a feed lot near the town of Pittsburgh we were able to buy a paint gelding who is a looker.

From a feed lot in Wilton we bought a young gray thoroughbred filly who was sold to slaughter because her owner was not able to find a saddle to fit her. Horse killer Manny Phelps says now he has heard it all...

More reasons from owners who sell their horses to slaughter. All of the following comes from horse killer Manny Phelps:

My eyes hurt and I can no longer ride.

This horse is dangerous. (the horse was 25 and would never swat a fly)

My husband lost his job. So we are going to use this free time to explore Europe, and there will be no one to feed the horse.

This horse keeps breaking out of the pasture and I am afraid he will get hit by a car. (the fencing was made of hay twine)

My daughter needs to be punished. So when she finds out her horse is going to be slaughtered, it will teach her a lesson.

My daughter no longer pays attention to him. I would rather he be killed than lonely.

Can you give me 50 cents a pound for my horse? I have a job interview in Los Angeles, and I need gas money.

Another reminder (I will do this often) about a large thoroughbred breeding farm going out of business. Their gates close in October. All of their horses must go. Stallions, preggo mares, weanlings, yearlings and horses of racing age. Tbfriends will be happy to provide transportation, but you must pay for gasoline. If you would like one of these horses give me a call at 530-383-2120.

Several event trainers who adopt from us regularly have already phoned to say they want a youngster. A weanling or yearling they can raise and train.

So it is the older horses we worry about. Especially the older pregnant mares. Most of these mares are due early in 2009. All of the remaining horses from this ranch will be sent to auction in Mira Loma, California.

And now yesterday comes word of yet another ranch closing their doors. They have asked Tbfriends to help with the dispersal of their horses. Crazy times we live in...

A special hello to Hillary in Mountain View, California. Our new hero. On Saturday Hillary saved the life of a race horse. She borrowed money from friends and family, and promised to pay them back. When friends and family discovered the money was for a horse in big trouble, they told Hillary no need to pay us back. On the phone Hillary wants to know how to rehab a bowed tendon. And then Hillary tells me this is the greatest joy in the world. She feels a glow inside. Her new horse knows he was saved. The way he looks at her.

Enjoy your windy holiday Monday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Hoping someone who has one of the horse racing channels and is watching the Pennsylvania Derby will post the reults as soon as it's run...in about 7 minutes!

This link below is on the MareStare message board and refers to yearlings in CO who are headed for slaughter. Not sure if anyone here is aware. I was asked to crosspost and do so happily as I know how powerful and successful the FOB's cause has been.
