Barbaro Updates: 670

updates are now here.

Update 3961: Penn National, which is experiencing an increasing number of breakdowns, is closing it's track for a renovation project: Penn National to Suspend Racing.

Lately I have been a little more exposed to Standardbred racing. On Sunday the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society is having their annual horse show: OSAS Standardbreds Horse Show.

Update 3960: A troubling story, with a fortunate ending: Retired Horse Saved from Return to Track, excerpt:

In the future, when trying to sell or give away horses after racing them, Puglisi said he plans to exercise "more due diligence" in placing them with new owners. Mighty Mecke's foal papers were given to Hubbs, at her request, something Puglisi won't do again in deals involving retired runners.

With previous racehorses that Puglisi had retired and sold, he said there was a written contract that the new owners had signed, saying the animals would not run again. There was no written contract for Mighty Mecke, but Puglisi will make the document a requirement from now on before he releases a horse.

"I think the foal papers are the key to all this; they (the new owners) really only need them if the horse is going to race," Puglisi said.

Mighty Mecke is at Klesaris' barn at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland.

"We're trying to decide what to do with him,"" Puglisi said. "Right now, we're thinking about keeping him as a pony. He's very special to everybody on our whole team."

Update 3959: I am now scheduled to do a radio interview a little after 1 pm on FAN950. You can listen over the internet I think.

Update 3958: A bit of a damp morning this morning at Woodbine. Foggy and muggy too. We had a busy morning with nine sets. Five went out before the break. We also gate schooled three. For my first set, I was galloping around steadily and as I approached the wire a horse and rider literally came from the outside rail to right in front of me. The rider fell off (he had no choice) and then the horse did a lap of the track on his own. Thankfully all was well.

It was the Canadian Hall of Fame ceremony last night, covered by Jen: BIG NAMES. Darren (my boss here) mentioned this morning that he donated a Curlin halter for the ceremony. It was auctioned off for $4,000 to go towards the Hall of Fame. Very cool.

Update 3957: Reigning Horse of the Year, Curlin is the favorite for Saturday's Woodward Stakes and has drawn post position 5: Curlin overwhelming favorite in Woodward

Looking for more feedback: NTRA Marketing Task Force.

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

For them:

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 25

Although Congress has now recessed until September 8, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list is on the DB and the wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts.

As well as calling DC, time is running out to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. Below is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them.

http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/legislation/110_equinecruelty_hr6598.pdf

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. It is not necessary to answer complicated questions or try to explain the bill. Sometimes "less is more"!!

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!!

Thanks,

Shelley and Deb

WOW JOE UP SO EARLY. UM, WHERE AND WHEN DOES HE ACTUALLY SLEEP?
***************************************************
Friday, August 29th... More triple digit heat for today, but by Sunday we could be down to 84 degrees. Sounds like a good plan...

Time to tell you about another ranch shutting their doors, only this ranch is filled with Arabians. I am the last person to ask about Arabian pedigrees, but it is said these horses carry some of the finest bloodlines in the land. There are 50 Arabians, including five stallions. Babies, older youngsters, and mares. Jodi Tuft, a long time best friend and helper of Tbfriends, is director of operations for the dispersal of these horses. The Arabians are free to good homes, and Jodi will do the screening. You are allowed to view these horses. They live just outside of Sacramento.

The other day I told you about yet another ranch foreclosure, and 30 thoroughbreds who need a new place to call home. Once again your response was way beyond anticipation. Readers of Tbfriends are the best. At least 15, and maybe 20 of these thoroughbreds now have new homes. Transportation begins on Tuesday. Unlike the Arabians, you are not allowed to see these thoroughbreds. Sight unseen, the ultimate rescue. My cell is 530-383-2120 if you can help any of these horses.

more to come

Raining here: damn, what a shock.
I am totally cranky: need coffee. Lots of coffee. I dreamed about our place on the Jersey shore all night. It is not ours anymore.

So the peeps from NC will be spending the week on Edisto Island in SC: a little slice of heaven, remember, i was there for my dreadful b.day last year. But i did get a Big with the Pig Piggly Wiggly T-shirt out of it...

I am SOOOOOO in the dumps.

OK That's my whine for the day. Joe's post. What the hell is happening to this country? an Arabian farm with well-known pedigrees? God.

Love to all who hurt, in any way. And kisses for the Maribel Twins; Coby and Abby...God is good.

Jonna, we love you! I look forward to reading whatever you have to say. Sorry you're in the dumps and I hope it goes away soon!

HERE IS JOE PART DEUX.
****************************************************
We honor the privacy of those losing their homes. But always there are amazing stories when horses from out of business ranches find a new family. Last month during a ranch foreclosure it was our job to find homes for their 23 thoroughbreds. A family in Vacaville asked if they could qualify for a free ranch foreclosure horse. I went to take a look at their other animals, and there was an old white thoroughbred mare. She was in great shape. Fat and happy. I kept staring at the mare, knowing I had seen her before. Finally I remembered. This is Bee Sheila, and at least 10 years ago I rescued her at an auction in Turlock. I paid a whopping $150.00 for her. Bee Sheila was starving. I gave Bee Sheila to a family in Sacramento. One year later, and the family in Vacaville bought Bee Sheila at another auction in Roseville. Poor old Bee Sheila has been through at least two crappy auctions, and was rescued each time.

There is a girl 17, and when she came out to the barn Bee Sheila squealed and went right to her. The girl tells me Bee Sheila has feet problems. Ulcers. A sore back. Bee Sheila put her face in the girls chest. It was this girl who gave Bee Sheila new life.

And so I told her mom, a new horse from the ranch foreclosure will soon be delivered.

The girl calls me a few weeks later and says she loves her new gelding. She named him Chip. He has two front teeth which are chipped. Each evening Bee Sheila and Chip stand at the fence and wait for their night time apple. The girl has been riding Chip on trails, and Labor Day weekend there is a schooling show they might try.

The girl ends her phone call by telling me thank you. She and her mom gave new life to two older horses, yet she is the one saying thank you.

Tbfriends and all of our helpers are forever grateful when you take in an unwanted horse. These are some sad times for both humans and animals. But your response in helping these humans and animals brings renewed energy. Each day a gift. All you have to do is see Bee Sheila and Chip waiting for their night time apple. Hope comes in all forms...

Joe

"Each day a gift. All you have to do is see Bee Sheila and Chip waiting for their night time apple. Hope comes in all forms..."

Words i should try to live by. Great post about the old mare joe recognized...and the reason this little girl got her new gelding Chip.

I know another quote

EACH DAY IS A GIFT. THAT'S WHY THEY CALL IT THE PRESENT.

ok, MORE COFFEE....more coffee....all the pack fed, the Great Tower of Dog Bowls has been constructed once again in the middle of the kitchen island. Stacked so each can dry, it's really something to rival the pyramids (snort, snort.)

Money went back home yesterday. And I hadn't pulled his bowl yet, so this morning I stood there staring--nay, drooling--at this full dog bowl, and wondering WHO THE HELL THIS BREAKFAST BELONGED TO???? (There are 15 hounds in the house right now...)

Off to call my Leetle Aide. Yawn. I want to know why we only have 60+ co-sponsors, shouldn't we have at LEAST as many as we had when the bill was HR503. I hate this.I couldn't bring myself to watch more that 15 minutes of the DC, made me ill, knowing it's all just a calculated crap shoot...

But I won't get further into POLITIKS here or someone will arrive at my leaking front porch with a nicely dry-cleaned orange jumpsuit for me. SIGH

Good Morning Gang.

###Jonna, my bad day was yesterday. I stayed away as to not bring anyone down into my black hole of anger and rage. I am better today. Sometimes the animal abusers turn me into something I can't even recognize. Coffee helps wake us up, but black licorice was my comfort throughout yesterday. And I have to stop watching the local news out of Albuquerque. Every story of abuse is reported, which is a good thing, but sometimes I get pushed over the edge.

Say HAPPY BERGHDAY to the founder of the ASPCA

excerpt from ASPCA email newsletter: NOTE there's a link to an adorable animated ecard featuring a talking horse . . .

Stick a candle in your morning muffin, give your pet a big hug and join us in celebrating the birthday of ASPCA founder Henry Bergh. Born on August 29, 1813, Bergh founded the ASPCA in New York City in 1866, and set to work on the society's mission. In addition to helping to pass a much more effective anti-cruelty law for New York State, Bergh inspected slaughterhouses and stables, lectured in schools, spoke out against dog fighting, horse racing and circuses, and supplied daily drinking water to the horses who pulled carts and streetcars in Manhattan. By the time of his death in 1888, humane societies had sprung up throughout the nation.

Thank you, Henry, and happy birthday! Check out our special animated Henry Bergh ecard

Good Bloodhorse article... what great owners!

When Mighty Mecke broke his foot in February, his co-owners Jeff Puglisi of Puglisi Racing and trainer Steve Klesaris, decided it was time to retire the 6-year-old colt from racing and find him a new career. Through a bloodstock agent, they discovered Stillfork Farm in Ohio, and they said they were told Mighty Mecke would stand there as a stallion.

But soon after the stakes-winning bay horse was delivered to the nursery in early July, Puglisi heard from a man who said Mighty Mecke had been sold to him to race in Antigua. Puglisi and Klesaris located the horse in Florida, hired a lawyer, and launched a frantic effort to get him back. The two men succeeded, but want other owners to know the story so their retired racehorses won’t end up in a similar situation.

"I’m in shock," Klesaris said. "I still can’t believe it happened. It completely blows me away that there are people out there like this."

Klesaris, as agent for Puglisi Stables, purchased Mighty Mecke for $130,000 at the 2004 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. April sale of 2-year-olds in training. The horse captured nine races, including the Nick Shuk Memorial Stakes and the male division of the OBS Championship Stakes in 2005, and earned $271,670. But when Mighty Mecke fractured his foot, after undergoing two knee surgeries earlier in his career, Klesaris and Puglisi didn’t believe he should ever race again. And they said they and their agent, Mike Slezak, made that clear to Michele Hubbs, who was the agent in the transaction for a man she identified as Larry Reid.

In addition, according to Puglisi and Molly Jo Rosen, the racing manager for Puglisi Racing, they did some research on Stillfork Farm, looking it up on the Internet and making phone calls to "the Ohio state-bred program." The van driver, after dropping off Mighty Mecke at Stillfork, took photos of the farm and gave them to Puglisi.

"We absolutely made it clear that this horse was not a racing prospect," claimed Puglisi, who sold Mighty Mecke for $2,500.

But Puglisi got a surprise July 7, when he received an e-mail from a man in Antigua who said he had bought Mighty Mecke and wanted to know the equipment and medication the horse would need when he raced in several weeks.

An upset Puglisi said he phoned Hubbs and left messages, but she wouldn’t return his calls.

"She did talk to Mike, and she told him her deal fell through with her plans for Mecke, and she had to sell the horse because her boyfriend or husband lost his job," Puglisi said. But according to Puglisi, discussions with the various people involved in the deal indicated that Hubbs had planned, all along, to resell Mighty Mecke as a racehorse rather than stand him at Stillfork.

"It was all premeditated," claims Puglisi, who spent more than $2,500 to locate Mighty Mecke in Florida and get him returned. "I’ve got a pretty good idea that these types of things happen all the time — that these horses that should be retired are sold by their owners for breeding purposes and then they are actually being raced unbeknownst to the owner. That’s very troubling and very disturbing to me. Mighty Mecke was just days away from boarding a plane and being on his way to Antigua to race."

The Blood-Horse attempted to contact Hubbs for comment five times through telephone calls and left messages on her voice mail, but she didn’t respond.

She did answer an e-mail, writing that she should be contacted by phone.

In the future, when trying to sell or give away horses after racing them, Puglisi said he plans to exercise "more due diligence" in placing them with new owners. Mighty Mecke’s foal papers were given to Hubbs, at her request, something Puglisi won’t do again in deals involving retired runners.

Mighty Mecke is at Klesaris’ barn at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland.

"We’re trying to decide what to do with him," Puglisi said. "Right now, we’re thinking about keeping him as a pony. He’s very special to everybody on our whole team."

Klesaris said one of the solutions to make sure horses like Mighty Mecke find good homes after competing is to set up a national program in which people who own or work with racehorses including veterinarians, farriers, jockeys, grooms, and exercise riders — would make mandatory contributions to a fund to support the runners following their retirements. The money could be collected as part of licensing fees or as a small percentage of purses.

"If everybody in this game had to contribute a dollar a week, just think about the amount of money it would generate," Klesaris said. "Each state would have its own facility for the retirement of racehorses, and it would have the money to fund it."
nding.

###Diane's prayer request reminds me of one attributed to Albert Schweitzer - I have a copy at my desk at work.
"Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals. Especially for animals who are suffering; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry. For all that must be put to death. We entreat for them all thy mercy and pity and for all those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the merciful." Amen.
"A heart of compassion" - sounds like someone (and, thankfully, many someones!) we know??!!

August 29 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

We can forgive ignorance to some degree, but willfulness is another issue. The sad part is that the two so often go hand in hand to create danger. The main objective of this personality is to take advantage, to prey on anyone or anything for no particular reason-other than because they can.

The wise thing is to be aware--to see and sense anything out of order. Don't, through compassionate thinking, give opportunity or reason to anyone, however kind and friendly they seem, to take advantage. Many have lost a great deal by being too trusting. But trust should not be passed out like calling cards--even to someone we have known before.

Times have changed--and maybe the personality as well.

Had our fathers the desire, they could have crushed the intruders out of existence with the same ease we kill the blood sucking mosquitoes.

Glad to be back home, had no internet while at our cabin in Saratoga for 2 weeks. Nala went with us and did great, she totally enjoyed being outside in the cool weather, she is still paralyzed. Thanks to Susan in Saratoga for allowing Nala to stay at her house so we could go to the track. Over Enough is wet but healing, still has another 5 weeks in the stall but he is happy at home.

Prayers to everyone and their animals who need it, out of the loop for the past 2 weeks.

Watched many awesome horses at Saratoga, Curlin, Dancing Forever, Proud Spell, Better Talk Now for a few. I have followed My Cousin Matt since he ran in the Breeders Cup and watching him trying to be competitive in the lowest level claiming race at Saratoga was heartbreaking. Thanks to his jockey Jeffrey Sanchez for wrapping up and taking care of him. The ladies at the TRF table told me that day, as Susan reported that trainer Bruce Brown claimed him and told them he intends to retire him. Susan and I will keep you posted.

We need to say some prayers for Louisiana. I have such lovely memories of south Louisiana. Coffee and beignets at Cafe du Monde. Sitting in St. Louis Cathedral on Sunday afternoons, watching the ongoing baptisms. Listening to the soft laughter and voices from the participants. The LSU Campus. Oak trees that are older than the Declaration of Independence. And the beauty of the Atchafalaya Swamp at sunset. I hope all of the Gulf Coast area is spared from the ravages of Gustav. They don't deserve this, again.

Best wishes for Peppers Pride on Sunday. Praying for safe racing for all.

Shocking Choice by John McCain

WASHINGTON-- Senator John McCain just announced his choice for running mate: Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. To follow is a statement by Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund.

“Senator McCain’s choice for a running mate is beyond belief. By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain has clearly made a decision to continue the Bush legacy of destructive environmental policies.

“Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska’s coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming. Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration.

“This is Senator McCain’s first significant choice in building his executive team and it’s a bad one. It has to raise serious doubts in the minds of voters about John McCain’s commitment to conservation, to addressing the impacts of global warming and to ensuring our country ends its dependency on oil.”

The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund (www.defendersactionfund.org) provides a powerful voice in Washington to Americans who value our conservation heritage. Through grassroots lobbying, issue advocacy and political campaigns, the Action Fund champions those laws and lawmakers that protect wildlife and wild places while working against those that do them harm.

I am not saying I am a donkey or an elephant, but I think McCain made a very foolish choice for VP. He did this to try to woo Sen. Clinton voters, and in my opinion, I think it will cost him the election. I believe it has already backfired.

Not saying anything negative towards Gov. Palin. It's just my feeling about this.

Thank you Dee for the beauty you bring us.

Thanks Jonna, I know exactly what you mean. What makes you think I don't do that? I'm nervous when they workout, never mind when they run. I don't know why I'm in this business, other than to say that I love them and want to be around them. In my own mind, I feel as long as I own them I can sort of protect them. Trust me, the majority of my partners are the same exact way as me so I'm in good company.

Anyway, thanks again for your wellwishes. It looks like it might be Tuesday for Coby and maybe Sunday for Bellagio.

MargieinNM- Totally agree with you! I was on the fence before today. When they announced that he chose her, it did it for me. The discussion in our office also agreed. We all were undecided before that announcement. I supported Hilary and when she didnt get in, I was tilting to McCain. I like him also, but that woman is not qualified to be second in command. And I would feel like that if she was a man. I also feel like he chose her to swing women voters based on the assumption that we would vote that way for that reason only. In this case, I know of 4 votes for sure that it backfired on. Jen

###MY thought on the presidential race is, the man running for president on the Democrat side is less qualified to be president than the Republican vice presidential candidate is qualified for the race she has been nominated for.

Neither one of them is qualified to go up against the terrorists of the world because they don't have any foreign policy experience. At least the woman can learn on the job. The Democrat will be ON the job.

####Goodness Jen, I don't want to talk politics, but I feel insulted that someone would think 'us women' could be swayed by a decision such as this. Gov. Palin appears to be a very good woman. But I feel she is being used to trick us into voting a certain way. And for that I believe we have been insulted, and so has Palin. I was wondering how out of touch McCain and his people might be. Now I think I know. I have never responded well to manipulation.

This is a site for the horses. And yole now I love animals. Just had to stick my 2 cents into the politics. Thank you for listening.

Let us not forget that "the man running for president on the Democrat side" had the good sense to choose a foreign policy expert as a running mate/partner in governing!

Unfortunately McCain thought he could pander to disenchanted Hillary die-hards by selecting a woman...but this particular woman will appeal strongly to the religious right, not to Hillary's people, and her record re animals and the environment is appalling (see post timestamped 10:23 pm). And that is ALL I will say on the subject because this isn't a political forum IMO...except for the very much BI-partisan effort to save our horses!

I agree you guys- we could probably get in a Knock Down- Drag out on Politics, but mainly I vote with the issues. The issues are the horses, wildlife and the environment for me. Enough said. Jen

###I agree Jen. In my view, the issues are the animals (especially the horses), conservation, and being good stewards of the earth. In that order, too, I think.

I read the story about Mighty Mecke and was appalled at the possibility of what COULD have happened. There are so many things about the rescue process (and the retirement process) that we do not know about. Awareness is the first step and this opened my eyes to an entirely new (and ugly) possibility.

Ack.

Hiya, FsOB. I don't know if Brent & I shall be at home on 08/30/08 at 7 PM, but wherever I am, I'll be thinking of Dr. Dean Richardson as part of the vigil.

I did call the City office in Hickman, NE earlier today. I strongly suspect that they may be deluged with calls, because the phone is answered with a recording that instructs the caller to press 1 if calling about Peter Rabbit. I left what was hopefully perceived as a respectful request for Peter Rabbit to be "grandfathered". I did note that the issue has obviously become one of interest throughout the country.

Wishing each of you "ACN" and may your holiday be a safe one. Peace, RMH

#### To Janice, I hope that Denny is feeling more comfortable following his visit yesterday.
Hello to Cheryl G.!
To Barb M.: Glad that you & Nala are home again with Over Enough!
To Margie in NM: I am heartsick, too, over the possible impact of Gustav on NOLA and the Gulf Coast. NOLA is one of my favourite cities in the US and I can't bear to think of it sustaining another hit so soon after Katrina. ####

Alex,
Wow! Thanks for the story on Mighty Mecke. Glad Hawty ran safely!

FOBs, the city of Hickman, NE's website is up again and they are inviting comments on the fate of Peter Rabbit. Let's use our best positive force to encourage them to do the right thing for this elderly horse.
