Barbaro Updates: 669

Updates are now here

Update 3956: Curlin is racing on Saturday in the Woodward at Saratoga. Here is a quick look at his challengers: Taking shot at Curlin, place in lore.

Found on Paulick Report.

Update 3955: Big Brown breezed on the turf today: Big Brown Breezes on Turf.

Update 3954: Warmer this morning at Woodbine. Some drizzle spinkled in. We had an easy morning with only six sets, four before the break and then two to the gate after the break. All went pretty easily. There is no racing at Woodbine this afternoon, ahead of a holiday Monday program next week.

Jen has a nice story on an OTTB, now polo pony. She also notes that tonight is the Canadian Hall of Fame induction ceremony: RINGS OF FAME.

Update 3953: Benny the Bull, who has the same connections as Big Brown and has been on a five race winning streak, has been retired due to an ankle injury: Benny the Bull retired due to ankle injury.

Projecting Nicanor's first start, which could be a while yet: Looking Back to Look Forward.

Looking for more feedback: NTRA Marketing Task Force.

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

For Canadians: Canadian Horse Defense Coalition Call to Action.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, thanks for the blog link re. Nicanor. Brent had been asking me why he hasn't been in a race yet & I said I thought it not uncommon that Nicky hadn't based on his age. (Boy, I wasn't sure about that one, so this info puts my mind at ease!) May each of you have a productive & safe day! Peace, RMH

#### To Donna: Thank you for sharing a copy of "The Horse's Wish" late last PM. May your visit to Johnny's favourite mare be a good one for you & for her today! ####

#### It's too early yet, I was referring to Nicanor racing, not to Brent racing. Ha! Ha! ####

Posted by: Robyn Hoffmann at August 28, 2008 10:46 AM

Alex, Thanks for the Nicanor news and earlier update on Lights on Broadway. How tragic about Sky Diamond--thanks for being ever vigilant!

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyKey, Genny, Sky and the rest of the charming group of Heavenly Equines...!

For them:

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 25

Although Congress has now recessed until September 8, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list is on the DB and the wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts.

As well as calling DC, time is running out to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. Below is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them.

http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/legislation/110_equinecruelty_hr6598.pdf

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. It is not necessary to answer complicated questions or try to explain the bill. Sometimes "less is more"!!

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!!

Thanks,

Shelley and Deb

reposting for maximum exposure - PLEASE ACT NOW to get PAW passed - there's suddenly an urgency that wasn't there before - please read, act and distribute this info widely.

ACT NOW / Stop Alaskan Wolf Massacre

Please take action to SAVE THE WOLVES!

This alert (from Defenders of Wildlife) asks us to tell our Reps to support HR 3663 - To close a loophole in federal law which currently permits the shooting of Alaskan wolves and other wildlife from airplanes and helicopters.

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=27920.1

Please go to this thread for details re the Bill and what we are being asked to do.

Bottom line - contact your Rep and ask him/her to support HR 3663, short title, the Protect America's Wildlife Act.

List of current cosponsors is posted in post 2 of the above-noted thread.

The reason this is so urgent now, is that the State of Alaska has just defeated a referendum that would have ended aerial hunting of wolves. The pending federal law closes a loophole in federal law that permits such hunting.

some Info re PAW act:

Bill Number: H.R. 3663
Bill Status: Pending
Bill Sponsor(s): Rep. George Miller (D-CA)

SHORT TITLE AS INTRODUCED:
Protect America's Wildlife Act of 2007

OFFICIAL TITLE AS INTRODUCED:
To amend the Fish and Wildlife Act of 1956 to establish additional prohibitions on shooting wildlife from aircraft, and for other purposes

Everything you may want to know will be at or accessible via the above-noted DB thread.

We just found out that someone met a man with a trailer with horses from Fairmount park. He was headed to Shipshewana? Dont know if I spelled that right or does anyone know where that is. This was probably one of the Kb that took a few horses that we tried to get that day. He specifically said that is where they came from. If anyone knows anything about this sale, please let me know. We tried to get these horses and the man was Horses Axx. If you know what I mean. Jen

Thursday, August 28th...
A new cell phone, and the entire package is complicated. I only wish to make calls and receive calls. Forget about understanding the instruction booklet. We are simple folk...

If you left a message in the last few days, call me back. My old phone was wacky.

So a new phone, but the computer Kodak program is once again not working. All I want is to be outside with horses. Fumbling my way through a technical world, and the results are not encouraging. I can watch a horse walk and diagnose his problems. Yet I still cannot figure out how to advance a song on the old cd player. I must listen to a dozen bad songs to get to the good one.

Just as soon as I am through boring you with the morning journal for Thursday, I will post pictures from the old Kodak program. A daily change of scenery is a good thing.

And to our thousands of readers in Ireland. Okay maybe not thousands, but at least 40. You ask about Seeking Answers, the tiny Irish colt who recently came to us from a race track. His injuries are serious, but his healing process has begun, and in six months Seeking Answers should be fine. We will not have Seeking Answers castrated until his pain has gone away. I have a new picture of Seeking Answers to show you for the morning journal, but the Kodak program is goofy. (geez, how many times do we have to hear about the Kodak program?) Seeking Answers is not eating well. Severely injured race horses only push their food around. Other things on their mind...

For this long Labor Day weekend I must feed 22 horses at another ranch. Our friend wants time off, so I get to earn the big bucks.

Today might be 104 degrees. Iced coffee with vanilla cream is from Starbucks. Microwave pancakes were made by Krusteaz. John Lennon on the oldies station. 106 horses decorate our landscape. Later today we will greet an old thoroughbred mare from horse killer Manny Phelps. Already we have named her Bonnie. There is employment at another ranch, and the big bucks keep coming. A special hello to Lorenzo, and my favorite show is also Diners And Dives. A special hello to Hannah in Grass Valley, and Pony Boy went crazy for your carrots cooked in brown sugar. Pony Boy wants to go live with Hannah now. A special hello to Leah in San Francisco, and if I were your teacher you would receive an A. Your drawing of a race horse is the best I have ever seen. And a special hello to Trish in Vacaville, and yes there is a young girl who would love your beautiful english saddle. She can come with her mom this weekend. Thank you Trish.

Enjoy your trying to stay cool Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

August 28 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Nothing and no one is worthy of sacrificing the best of oneself to please or placate. We have the right to reuse anything that would destroy our own honor or self esteem. Right and wrong may not always be clear for us, but if we hold to what we know is right, we will not have failed.

Regaining self respect may be more difficult than losing it, but it can be done. We only have to consider where we want to be a week, a month, or a year from now. Will the path we are on get us there? Sometimes the wisest thing is to turn around and go back to common sense.

Our children were never known to cry of hunger, and no stranger, red or white, was permitted to enter our lodges without finding food and rest.

A Narrow Escape

I knew the woman's enforced donkey diet austerity program would nearly be the death of me. It's all very well using draconian measures to control my caloric intake but she shouldn't be surprised when I'm forced to take counter measures of my own. A starving donkey is a creative donkey.

The woman had taken Molly into the barn and tied her up preparatory to grooming and getting her into her trail gear. Doc was loitering around the back of the barn and Jack was licking the salt block and swatting flies with his tail. I was staring through the gate that keeps us away from the hay stockpile and thinking that with a bit of ingenuity, I could access the lot. In six years I have never been able to achieve this goal. I stuck my nose through and inhaled the wonderful grassy aroma. I closed my eyes, turned my head sideways and voila! I was through. I browsed at my leisure but when I tried to extricate myself, found I was stuck fast.

I tried everything I could think of and finally, in a blind panic, lifted the twelve foot gate off it's hinges, pulled the chain fastener out of it's slot and carried off the whole thing. I charged at the doors but the damnable thing wouldn't fit. When I backed up rapidly, it toppled me over. The woman opened the door into the barn and rushed toward me and I tried to get in there. The noise was astonishing - clang, boing, bong - it followed me everywhere. Doc heard the commotion and rushed to my aid. I charged toward him and the gate cut his legs out from under him. Now he and I were lying stunned on the manaic gate. I gave an almighty heave and it released it's vise-like grip; I galloped off down the paddock before it could regroup itself.

Throughout all this the woman had been desperately trying to calm me and wrestle the gate off my neck and she stood in the midst of the wreckage, looking absolutely stunned. Jack had hidden in the trees at the first sign of trouble and Doc said "Cool, now we can climb right inta the food". Molly had watched the whole thing with a look of utter disgust and hadn't moved a muscle. The woman was afraid she would panic too and pull the whole barn down, but it just confirmed her view that boys are "stoopid".

My neck is a tad stiff but I have suffered no ill effects and have no intention of repeating the experiment. It took me six years to steel myself to the task and I feel my work on that front is done. I also don't appreciate being compared to someone called Ferdinand the Bull, whom apparently I resembled when in full flight with the gate draped around my person.

Please help the 25 year old...needs a home asap....please help this little one..

and the horses Jen was talking about....we need to check this out..and see if we can save them.

and others on the rescue...please read and help...

Posted by: joan roya at August 28, 2008 6:48 PM

## All - please take a moment and go to the Discussion Board and check out the "topic" of:
Dream Catcher - Horses may die. This is a terrible situation - a case of "mistaken identity" ....... or ... similar names - and, this well run rescue and, of course, the innocent horses, are suffering. I know that we Fans Of Barbaro - make miracles happen - and I am asking you to read - and think - and consider a plan... and make suggestions. More than our donations are needed. The reputation of this well established rescue needs to be restored, quickly.
The "truth" must get out - and I am thinking a "blitz" such as we've done before - is a possibility. There are many energetic and smart folk on this site ........ surely we can help ??
In these really tough times we cannot afford to allow a rescue to go under.

Am thinking many on the main board might not visit the Discussion Board - and I'm directing you that way because is such a critical issue.

Received a nice thank you card from Stephanie at MHR thanking me for the small donation I sent in. However, she has it wrong. She is the one who deserves all the thanks. Nice card with our beautiful boy, Barbro, on the front. A graphic pencil drawing by Laura Smith. She said they have 46 horses now. Thats Barbaro not Barbro. Cant type today. Am about to call about Peter Rabbit again. I wish I lived there would picket.

10 minutes to Edgar's next race, the 6th at Saratoga, where he is riding a horse whose name ends in 'licious' - missed the rest!

Posted by: CJaffe at August 28, 2008 8:39 PM

###Re the sanctuary with the unfortunate name association: Sadly there are "people out there" who are less than scrupulous when dealing with animal lovers who have big hearts and don't always think things through (or check things out). Once bitten twice shy; once fleeced, less willing to open the wallet--and the animals pay the price.

###You HAVE to check out ALL requests that come from people who (allegedly) have horses that need homes, fostering, adoption, medical help, feed, or some other intervention that requires donations of money. I wish it were all peace and love out there, but there are monsters who can lie without blinking and make us believe every word we read.

(If you need further proof, this is an election year. We hear, see and read lies every day. ;o)

Some of these people are caught in the act and banned from ABR for their misdeeds. Donors beware: You MUST make certain your contributions are going to a legitimate, upfront rescue. The money you send for feed or medicine must go toward that purpose and not end up in someone's pocket so he/she can gamble or drink it away. Or live on it. That isn't right either when the money should go to help something that cannot fend for itself.

Use a search engine to see if there are any news articles about the group. Contact people in the area. Ask for information at ABR: "Anyone from (name the area) know anything about this group? Email me privately..." etc. Contact the Better Business Bureau. Call the sheriff or local police agency. Call animal control. Etc. Email them. CHECK THEM OUT.

One of our local vets has established a fund at his clinic for rescue horses. It's called the Sparky Fund, named after a rescue horse that needed an operation for a cancerous tumor. The rescuer asked for donations toward the cost of the operation and followup medical care; of the $2,000 that was needed, nearly $1,800 came to the clinic. Several people donated after the fact, and now that Sparky has found a forever home and the maintenance for his cancers is very low (the occasional flareup which is removed early--and less expensively--and paid for by the new owner), the fund in his name is now earmarked for any rescue horse that comes to the clinic in need of medical care.

When I donate to that fund, I KNOW the money will be used exactly as it is intended.

Gift cards are another way of handling donations. Cards for fuel, feed, tack and equipment at local stores or redeemable online are good. You have a receipt for tax purposes and you've made it as easy as possible for the rescue to get the items you have specified.

###If people read about the Dream Catcher rescue (the GOOD one), they will know it isn't the same one that got shut down out here in California. I live not far from the not-so-good one, and when the Animal Control folks and the veterinarians were there dealing with the animals that needed to be euthanized and rescuing the others, there were hysterical emails going to blogs and message boards talking about how the vets were "enjoying killing the animals" and other such nonsense. (Personally, when I receive a letter with lots of exclamation points, !!!!!, I instantly see it as written with the desire to drive readers to hysteria).

###Be cautious. Check things out. Google. Email. Make a phone call or two. Protect yourself while you work to protect and help the animals.

Hi Everyone!

Please take a moment to check out this website--conceived by a little girl! A great concept: The site features a different animal shelter every month and asks for everyone to contribute $1 towards that shelter--$12/year for 12 different shelters in need. This would be a fantastic model for FOBs to assist horse rescues--here is the site:

Here is a great article in today's Pittsburgh Post Gazette about Kennett Square's famous mushroom industry and Mushroom Festival info.

I called Hickmans city clerks office and also the City of Hickman. I just said I am calling about Peter Rabbit and they knew instantly why I was calling. They were nice and said they would give the message to the right people. They ask where I was calling from and I said Texas. It seems they are getting calls from all over the U.S. So yole lets all go to bat for Mr. Peter Rabbitt as only FOBs can. Hickman City Clerk 402-432-6018 City of Hickman 402-792-2212

Hi All: Just saw Nicanor's picture. He is a beautiful boy. Looks alot like his big brother.

I also wanted to let everyone know, my baby Coby and also possibly Bellagio will be racing sometime this weekend. We are looking for races either at Monmouth or Philadelphia. Coby breezed the other day and I am thrilled to say that he is just fine. Again thanks for those thoughts and prayers; they really helped.

I need you to start getting the prayers and wellwishes going for both of my boys that they have a safe and uneventful race.

Thanks,

Hiya, FsOB! I wasn't able to call the City of Hickman, NE today but shall do so tomorrow when I am taking a vacation day. May each of you have "ACN".

#### Has anyone heard from Otherlyn or Jean Nolan lately?
To Janice, I am so sorry that Thursdays make you feel Kaiser's loss even more than most days.
To Lorraine: May Bellagio & Cobra Strike have safe runs this weekend.
To Sandra: Please tell Chief that his honourary auntie up in CT said "hello". Ditto from Nikitam who is panting, either due to our walk or else an impending storm. I think she is channeling Chief's storm anxiety right now. ####

Hi Gang.

Crazy here. I should have stayed in bed.

(((Casino Drive))) Let's go and welcome him at the airport!

Robyn, I think you will find the people very nice when you call them about Peter Rabbitt. Of course they cant really comment since they are not the high people in charge. This really annoys me a man of 76 and his friend Peter Rabbit who is 32 years old.

#### Padme,

Thanks for the update. We'll have to put our anticipation on hold for a few days. However, if anyone would still like to donate to the Laminitis Fund, there's time !!!

Where is everyone? It's Friday and the Friday before a holiday weekend at that.

Hope you all have a great one.

Den had his stitches (from the defibrillator/pacemaker implant) removed yesterday and goes back for a checkup in a month. Next week he will see the other doctor re: the blood loss issue.

I'm not sure if this was posted before but figured it might be good for a smile.

My wife she has a quarter horse, with flaxen mane and tail.
She thinks he is the finest thing that ever jogged a rail.
She calls him Dandy Darling, and if the truth I tell,
that fancy pampered quarter horse has made my life pure hell.
My wife she used to cook for ME and serve it with champagne.
Now she'd rather feed that horse and fix his special grain.
She rides him every morning, and grooms him half the night.
The last time that she kissed ME it was just to be polite.
He dresses better than I do, with matching wraps and ties,
my wardrobe's so neglected now that I attract the flies.
One day my wife was shopping, she was down at the mall,
and fancy pampered DANDY was just standing in his stall.
He looked so smug and sassy, that I began to grin,
I'd saddle that fat sucker, and take him for a spin.
I've wondered since if cues I gave, he might have misconstrued,
for when I climbed aboard that horse, he rightly came UNGLUED.
He bucked and spun, and snorted fire, and threw me through a fence.
I saw big stars and there are teeth that I ain't heard from since.
My wife came home and saw me, just a lying in the dirt,
she rushed up to her HORSE and asked him, 'Sweetheart are you HURT?'
He'd scratched his nose a little bit, and the memory galls me yet,
she left me lying in the mud, and ran to call the VET!!!

PS - Robyn - thank you.

Because the good Dr. Richardson will not be at New Bolton today, he birthday party has been postponed until Tuesday, September 2nd...which means we still have time to donate to the Laminitis Fund!
