Barbaro Updates: 668

updates are now here.

Update 3952: Here is an update on Lights On Broadway, a horse that is on our Top Bunk List: Rescue Update For Lights On Broadway.

Update 3951: My radio interviewed got bumped, for a LPGA story. It should occur tomorrow or friday.

Update 3950: Another chilly morning this morning at Woodbine. We had seven sets, three of which went to the gate. This meant we had a long break while waiting for the gate to open. Coffee from the kitchen and a stop over in the HBPA office for the break. Each of my horses went nicely for a decent morning's work. As the sun was coming up the siren went off and a loose horse came galloping directly towards us. I could not see it at all until it past us. Thankfully it did not decide to run into anyone as he was hard to pick out!

Later today, I am to be interviewed on radio live on The Fan 590 (just after 1 pm).

Update 3949: Steve Asmussen on the loss of Parker Buckley: Far worse than any tough beat, excerpt:

The death of Buckley, whom Asmussen had known for 21 years and employed for the last 16 months, has had a profound impact on the trainer who is in the midst of the best year of his 22-year career.

"When you go from [thinking] that he had a broken leg to he's gone, to this point it's been impossible for me to catch up with," Asmussen, 42, said by phone from Dallas on Tuesday, one day before he was to attend Buckley's funeral in Florida. "It is a loss or a vacancy that won't be filled."

Looking for more feedback: NTRA Marketing Task Force.

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

Hiya, FsOB! Another golden day is dawning here on the banks of the Thames. The sunrise is reflecting off the windows of a building in New London, glinting like a mirror. May each of you have a safe & productive day! Peace, RMH

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 25

Although Congress has now recessed until September 8, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list is on the DB and the wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts.

As well as calling DC, time is running out to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. Below is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them.

http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/legislation/110_equinecruelty_hr6598.pdf

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. It is not necessary to answer complicated questions or try to explain the bill. Sometimes "less is more"!!

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!!

Thanks,

Shelley and Deb

Good Morning all FOBS & Barbaro.

I went in and read the article about Peter Rabbit. I immediately went to the govenor's website & basically told him the horse wasn't hurting any thing or anybody & they needed to grow a heart & let him live his live out where he is regardless of any law/code. I told them they should have much larger problems to worry about & if he didn't I would send him a list of some.

I guess that was my rant for the day. I just hate when people are so cruel - Karma is all I can say.

Hugs to all - have a great day!

How ridiculous is that? Praying that Peter Rabbit can stay where he is. It appears that some humans feel the need to 'win' in that situation.

THANK YOU to ALL who are keeping US in your hearts and prayers at this time.Hoping to hear from Scott SOON???

It is comforting to know that y'all are here with me.That means so much...

Peter Rabbit
I tried emailing on your behalf but they wouldn't let the email go through?? Guess their email box must be full??? Praying for Mr Scott and Peter that sanity prevails on their behalf.Yes Margie Peter should be allowed to stay?? His existence precluded the re-zoning therefore he should be allowed to live out his days there .
Did y'all get it that McDonalds Restaurant is moving in next door???? Perhaps we should put some pressure on McDonalds????Not good for their image of appealing to children!
Did anyone phone Keith Dane at Humane Society of The United States.Peter Rabbit has rights too and HSUS is supposed to protect them.
Mr Scott loves and provides for his horse and it is disgusting that anyone would deprive a senior man of his happiness!!!

Down off my soap box....

Gotta go eat now...

Really upset about Peter Rabbit. So being FOBs we will bombard the zoning people. That is if we can get through. I dont understand. Lubbock is 200,000 people but some of it is grandfathered in if horses were owned when areas were annexed. I have had a few neighbors through the years I would have gladly traded for several hundred horses next door. I am hoping the situation gets much media attention.

MORE "GOOD NEWS" FROM SO. CALIFORNIA. I WISH I KNEW HOW WE WERE GOING TO SURVIVE THE NEXT 5-10 YEARS OR SO--ALL OF US...
**************************************************
Wednesday, August 27th... Here we go again. Beginning the first week of September another ranch in Northern California is being foreclosed on. There are over 30 thoroughbreds, and they all need new homes.

In the last five weeks Tbfriends has helped six foreclosed ranches find homes for their horses. Your response was more than anticipated, and over 60 horses have been placed with new families. And beginning after Labor Day we do it all over again. These thoroughbreds are free, but you must pay for gasoline. Tbfriends will take care of shipping details. Just like the other six ranches, you are not allowed to view these horses. Give me a call at 530-383-2120. If the Labor Day ranch has what you are looking for, I will put him or her on a trailer.

If you are a regular customer with Tbfriends, of course the dealings are easy. If we have never before met, you will be asked a few simple questions. And you might get a visitor who will look at your other animals. Say hello to Jessica White, Michelle Clippenger, or Nicole Ray.

Our delivery drivers are Stephanie Diaz, Ryan Andrews, Jennifer Wright, Georgia Hartman and Angela Youngblood. We are incredibly grateful.

It is now time to give you notice. Another thoroughbred breeding farm is calling it quits, and Tbfriends has been asked to help find homes for their horses. We are talking unbelievable pedigrees with their mares. Weanlings, yearlings, horses of racing age, and two stallions. Several of the mares are pregnant, and due early in 2009. All of this should take place the first week of October.

Difficult times in horse land, with overflowing rescue ranches, overflowing foster homes, and all of this results in overflowing feed lots.

I am constantly asked by one irate reader to share more details of horse slaughter on my morning journal. There are other places to visit on the internet if you want to read about horses slaughtered in Canada and Mexico. My morning journal is about helping horses, and the good hearted folks who help these horses. Been this way for 4 years, and I am not going to change direction. If you want gory details, and it boggles the mind why, there are other places to find them.

My cell phone is goofy, but I will have a new one today or tomorrow. If you can help horses from failing ranches give me a call. If you can help horses waiting for the slaughter truck at feed lots give me a call. If you want to talk about upcoming triple digit heat and billions of flies and poop on top of poop, give me a call.

Enjoy your 103 degree Wednesday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

We call him Cope, and never in my life have I met such a survivor. All the bad things done to him, yet Cope still loves people. Cope has a racing tattoo which says he is 7 years old.

Top Row shows Cope 30 days ago, and Cope today. We have almost lost him twice. I will keep you informed as to his progress.

Recent arrivals from race tracks:

Bottom Left: We call him Mannix, he is 4, and very sore. Mannix loves carrots and peppermints.

Bottom Right: We call him Brandon, he is also 4, and not at all sore. Brandon does not like carrots or peppermints, but he will eat a banana.

Just a quick check in here - desperately in need of a nap here at the moment - zzzzzzzzz.
Brain currently beyond functioning normally but if one of you would kindly post the address to where we can respond on behalf of PETER RABBIT and his owner, I will gladly join you all in making some noise.
Amen to you, SANDRA! Yes, we had pastures of equine neighbors for years and savored every moment!! Would gladly have the horses back particularly in place of some of the current two-legged inhabitants!!

God Bless PETER RABBIT and his owner, MR. SCOTT!! What kind of people are on that zoning board???!!! What was that excellent line Alex used some time back?? . . . . something to the effect of "Don't be an ass" ......

Prayers and hugs going out to and for all in need, especially those with heavy hearts.

How out of touch are we becoming as a society??How snooty are we getting??? What matters anymore?????

Here we see the dilemna of Peter Rabbit, just an old horse, who violates zoning laws.

Then I hear from the owners of Vermont Country Store that last year people in Vermont tried to get a 'right to dry' law passed in Vermont. It didn't pass, so they will try again this year.

The right to dry law is....you guessed it....the right to hang your laundry outside.

I'm going to take a nap now.

***************************************************
Dear jonna,

The Bush Administration has just launched a disastrous new "Fast Track to Extinction" scheme that would put polar bears, wolves, whales and countless other imperiled wildlife at grave risk.

jonna, your emergency gift can help us mount a rapid-response campaign and turn back this grave threat to America's wildlife.

In a stealth attack, the Department of Interior recently announced plans to drastically re-write the 35-year-old Endangered Species Act and allow federal agencies to fast-track projects that could harm wildlife -- without the traditional oversight required by this bedrock environmental law.

Worse yet, the Interior Department is trying to ram through this dangerous new proposal while Congress and many Americans are on vacation -- and before the November elections -- by slashing the public comment period to only 30 days.

Time is short -- but the White House is underestimating what you and the NRDC Action Fund can do when we work together to protect wildlife.

Our new rapid-response campaign is ready to hit the Internet, airwaves and newsstands.

All we need is your emergency donation to run the first ad and sound the alarm that our country's wildlife conservation law is under attack.

If they get their way, the Bush Administration will put the fate of our country's endangered wildlife in the hands of federal agencies charged with promoting mining, logging, and oil drilling.

Here are just a few of the disastrous scenarios that could ensue:

* Polar bears could be exposed to lethal oil spills if the federal Minerals Management Service is given free reign to open up the Arctic to oil development.
* Endangered whales could be subject to more frequent assaults with deadly sonar if the U.S. Navy is allowed to conduct exercises without independent scientific review.
* Gray wolves could lose their forest habitat if the U.S. Forest Service is permitted to green-light timber sales without any external environmental oversight.

Hundreds more imperiled animals and plants could be fast-tracked to extinction by a "death of 1,000 cuts" if we don't act immediately.

With the public comment period closing in mid-September, every donation counts. We must run our campaign-launching ad to rally the American public...alert the media...galvanize thousands of NRDC Members and online activists via the Internet...and work in both the House and Senate to generate a groundswell of congressional opposition.

So please, make an emergency contribution that will put the brakes on this "Fast Track to Extinction" threat.

On behalf of the polar bears, wolves, whales and countless other animals that depend on the Endangered Species Act for their very survival, I thank you in advance for whatever financial support you can give at this critical time.

Sincerely,
Frances
Frances Beinecke
President
NRDC Action Fund

P.S. Remember, without the Endangered Species Act, the bald eagle, grizzly bear, Florida panther, manatee and countless other species would be extinct today. So please give America's wildlife a chance at tomorrow by helping us thwart the Bush Administration's dangerous plan.

Yole also know that I have been doggin' soon-to-be-ex-Congressman Walsh from NY about co-sponsoring HR6598.

First of all, I should not SHOULD NOT have called DC after writing Christine at Gentle Giants about Micah and Lance. I am just heartbroken about those boys.

So then, idiot me, already upset, I do my call...and this Leetle Aide not only does NOT know anything about HR6598, OR HR503--yes, my sisters and brothers--he DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HORSE SLAUGHTER IS.

I thought my head would twirl on my neck. And then--yes, Cheryl, mercifully esplode.

SO.

We had a VERY LONG conversation and I am praying that he is a distant nephew of the congressman just there on a work-study-lark and that's why he KNOWS NOTHING, and that when Walsh returns to DC, said distant relative will have gone to our AAHS website, looked at EVERYTHING, lost his expensive cookies, gone to his shrink for meds and THEN will fall on his knees before his Uncle weeping, and BEG him to co-sponsor HR6598.

I can hope.

######### Hi Renee and Jonna and all! I've been laying low for a couple of days, nothing wrong, just needing a time-out. The music schedule is getting more intense - many nights out, many consecutive, where I don't get home until like after 3 am. Makes me want to sleep away the rest of the day . . .

Also I have an approach/avoidance complex going on with my email inbox so have been intentionally staying offline for a couple of days - the other day I opened a weekly update from either HSUS or ASPCA (can't recall which) and of all the horrible animal stories we have all read, I read one that was the worst yet - details privately on request if anybody wants to know what it was. That just made me want to curl up and hibernate and not open any more emails for a while. Also the loss of Foxy makes me want to spend more time "down" cuddling with the rest of my cats.

AND NOW A FEELGOOD STORY for y'all:

(I always liked this horse, and I am so thankful his injury was discovered before a disaster happened...happy retirement, Benny!)

Benny the Bull retired after injury
By DAVID GRENING

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Benny the Bull's racing career is over.

The top sprinter in the country, Benny the Bull was found to have a chip in his right front ankle Wednesday morning, two days after he worked six furlongs in 1:14.29 at Aqueduct in preparation for Saturday's Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga. X-rays taken Wednesday morning at trainer Richard Dutrow Jr.'s Aqueduct barn revealed the chip.

Benny the Bull would have to undergo surgery to remove the chip, and thus he would miss the remainder of the year, including the Breeders' Cup Sprint. Since his connections were going to retire him at the end of the year anyway, the decision was made to retire him now.

"He's given us so much," said Michael Iavarone, co-president of the International Equine Acquisitions Holdings Stable, which owns majority interest in the colt. "He's a horse that hasn't missed a beat the last 15 or 16 months. It's time to retire him."

Iavarone said stallion plans are pending for Benny the Bull, a 5-year-old Florida-bred son of Lucky Lionel who won 9 of 17 starts and earned $2,221,630. International Equine purchased Benny the Bull from owner Greg James last summer. In eight starts for IEAH and Dutrow, Benny the Bull won five stakes, including the Grade 1 De Francis at Laurel Park last year, the Sunshine Millions Sprint, Grade 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, Grade 2 True North, and Grade 2 Smile Sprint Handicap this year.

"I think what got us all excited was the Sunshine Millions race when he freaked," Dutrow said Tuesday, before knowing of Benny the Bull's injury. "It looked like he could have beaten any sprinter that day. His other races he's just been grinding it out, but that day he looked like a special sprinter."

"There's ups and downs in this game, but I don't even view this as a down," Iavarone said. "The horse has retired without something terrible happening and hopefully he'll live a happy and healthy life."

Here's my two cents: Peter Pan must be allowed to remain in his home since birth. PERIOD! ESPECIALLY since the "representatives" in that town only have had jurisidiction for TWO years...since they "annexed" the land! Hmmm, doesn't seem right to me. I feel personally insulted also that the town council is IGNORING the desires of Mr. and Mrs. Jackson! They took the time and effort to call and get ignored? Hey, town council, not good, you got the dander of the FsOB up. Look out! You can't hide you know, we FOUND you and your address and phone number! GO GET 'EM!

I am DA*N PROUD to be part of this Famblee!

On a lighter note, Hawty Creek is entered at Penn National in the 1st race on the 29th. It is a claiming race. Please join my prayers that she is safe and not claimed. That would break her owner's heart; he did say to Alex once, "She may not win a race, but she is loved." (or something close to that.

######## I was invited to perform some "ole hippie type" material on Thursday the 28th in Chicago's Grant Park at a "recreation" of the infamous Dem Conv Chicago riots of '68. (At the time, btw, I was a Cook County Asst Public Defender, assigned to defend ppl charged with offenses for participating in the mob scene; atypical crimes charged included (seriously) a federal crime of damage to federal property [overturning a tank] and local ordinance violation [wearing a replica of the US flag upon the seat of one's pants].

Though I had a perfect counter-culture set ready to go - two covers, (Sheldon Harnick's) The Merry Minuet ["They're Rioting in Africa") and (Ed McCurdy's) Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream; and one of mine called "Let's Save the World From Blowing Up - Don't Let It End," I inquired first, did they have a permit for the mass gathering that was planned. The response, "We applied for a permit and our application was denied." Too bad, I won't be going. Told them with a diabetic cat on twice a day insulin at home I couldn't risk anything "bad" happening to me in Grant Park!

So watch the news tomorrow (Thursday afternoon), the affair is set for 5 pm in Chicago's Grant Park, and I personally hope for the best but anticipate that if they have any kind of a turnout - without a permit - there WILL be trouble. (This IS Chicago, after all . . . )

It's really a shame I had to pass on this, because I am foregoing a huge audience and the opportunity to push our bill.

CJ, Thank you for standing up and doing the right thing. Even though it seems the immediate impact is a lost chance, the long term effect is that you have strengthened our causes. Integrity and ethics are two things lacking in our world far too often today, you have set the standard high.
I'm proud to know you.

Aug 27 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Guilt imagines that every eye sees and every mind judges. But guilt can be false--a thing of the conscience that becomes so real it rules our common sense.

We are aware that all guilt is not false--but for most people the fear of someone thinking we are guilty is reason enough. What we do not realize is that it is our own thinking, our own emotion and fear that keep us weaving and dodging.

A person trying to lose a few pounds feels guilty if someone sees him eating. A prudent spender feels the weight of spending a dollar ---- and so goes the guilt which is not guilt at all but fear. From one fear comes a thousand things to get rid of--and the false guilt should be the first.

Will you sit idly by, supinely awaiting complete and object submission, or will you die fighting?

Good evening everyone,

Maribel - Congrulations on the new twin grandbabies! What a time you will have with them!!

Yeaaa for Lights on Broadway. He is coming home to an excellent place with Donna and Dallas Keen. He is one of my new favorite trainers who is always putting the horse first. Thank you both!

Did I read somewhere that Congressman Joe Sestak from Pa was a co-sponsor? I don't see his name listed on the post above.

Posted by: janicek32 at August 28, 2008 2:13 AM

Congrats to Maribel ! I also have girl/boy twins. So special.

####

I have also written to the stupid city of Hickman about Peter Rabbit. So frustrating.

Love and all.

Posted by: Barb AZ, Chunky and Punky at August 28, 2008 2:17 AM

Wow, a riddle from Nebraska.... Question: When can an individual be both a human and a jacka-- simultaneously? Answer: When he is a member of the Hickman City Council and votes to evict a 32-year old horse from the only home the creature has ever known. Honestly, I expected more common sense from elected public officials living in the Heartland of America! Why couldn't they simply "grandfather" Peter Rabbit and say that there couldn't be any other horses permitted within the city? I just tried to reach the telephone # for the city's office, but the message is that one's call cannot be answered at this time and will be disconnected. I'll try again tomorrow and let's hope that sanity will prevail. An ACN for us all! Peace, RMH

#### To Debbie Singer: Great posting re. the debacle in Hickman, NE.
To Maribel: Fabulous news!!! When will you be able to visit the twins? Hans must be thrilled, too.
To Mary L: Thanks for the gorgeous photo of Rachel R., Jacob, and Aaron. Anne Brennan posted on Erin's site that Anne was present for Rachel's delivery.
To Padme: Hoping you are feeling better.
To CJ: Thanks for the news about the concert in Chicago. It sounds like you made a very prudent decision in staying away! ####

ACT NOW / Stop Alaskan Wolf Massacre

Please take action to SAVE THE WOLVES!

This alert (from Defenders of Wildlife) asks us to tell our Reps to support HR 3663 - To close a loophole in federal law which currently permits the shooting of Alaskan wolves and other wildlife from airplanes and helicopters.

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=27920.1

Please go to this thread for details re the Bill and what we are being asked to do.

Bottom line - contact your Rep and ask him/her to support HR 3663, short title, the Protect America's Wildlife Act.

List of current cosponsors is posted in post 2 of the above-noted thread.

The reason this is so urgent now, is that the State of Alaska has just defeated a referendum that would have ended aerial hunting of wolves. The pending federal law closes a loophole in federal law that permits such hunting.

some Info re PAW act:

Bill Number: H.R. 3663
Bill Status: Pending
Bill Sponsor(s): Rep. George Miller (D-CA)

SHORT TITLE AS INTRODUCED:
Protect America's Wildlife Act of 2007

OFFICIAL TITLE AS INTRODUCED:
To amend the Fish and Wildlife Act of 1956 to establish additional prohibitions on shooting wildlife from aircraft, and for other purposes

Everything you may want to know will be at or accessible via the above-noted DB thread.

Dear FOBs

Congratulations Maribel! Great news on the arrival of Coby and Abby. You might write a letter or start a journal to them and tell them how you danced when they were born. Ten years from now they'll love to read about it.

Thank you so much for all of your caring emails about my beloved Johnny. I can't tell you what it has meant to me to read them, and I've read them over and over. I can't sleep again and am waiting for Nyquil to kick in so I can get some rest. I hope I can remember what his coat felt like and the way he took my hand in his mouth and "chewed" on it. He leaned on me to take care of him and that's what I did last Sunday. It makes me feel good to know I helped him. He took up a large space in my life and now it's empty. I'm going to try to go out to the barn tomorrow and see his girlfriend who is hollering for him.

My thoughts with DonnaR also and the loss of your little dog Regan. Am so very sorry.

Sending you all hugs.

Donna

One of my neighbors sent me this poem.

The Horse's Wish.........

"If the day should come when I'm in pain,
And you know I won't be well again
Promise you'll do what must be done
If this is the battle that can't be won.

It'll break your heart, but please be kind,
Don't let your grieving sway your mind
For this is when you'll let me see
Just how much you do love me.

Together we've had happy years
The future now can hold no fears
Please don't let me suffer- so
When that day comes, please let me go.

For my usual vet please will you send?
But stay with me until the end...
Hold me steady, speak to me
Till my bright eyes no longer see.

In time I hope you'll come to see,
It's the last kindness you'll do for me.
One more time please stroke my mane
And know that I'll have no more pain.

And don't be sad that it was you
Who decided this was what to do,
We've been such buddies
through the years
Don't let me be the cause of tears....

You'll always see me graze now,
with the sun upon my back
Painful limbs won't tire me now,
however long the hack.

I live now in your heart and mind,
a lovely place to stay.
And what you have in memories,
no one can take away."
