Barbaro Updates: 664

updates are now here.

Update 3931: Not a typical racing story: Two-year-old filly leaves seasoned trainer flabbergasted.

Found on Paulick Report.

Update 3930: Actor Paul Sorvino, who supported Americans Against Horse Slaughter, on CNN: Movie star saves horses.

Update 3929: Another pleasant morning here at Woodbine. We had seven sets, four before the break and three after the break. All went nicely. We have a new rider, Dominic, who actually worked for Steve in the US up until Derby time. He is also a jockey. Anyway, he seems to be settling in well and the two horses he worked this morning also seemed to go well. A simple and straightforward morning.

Some interesting coverage at Jen's thoroughblog today.

Update 3928: While we wait for the Travers Stakes on Saturday there are other good races over the next few days.

On Sunday at Del Mar, we have the Pacific Classic. Last year this was the coming out for Student Council. Student Council has returned to California for this race after a nice closing second on the Whitney. My boss, Darren, is supervising his preparations: Go Between, Student Council highlight Pacific Classic.

2007 Eclipse Award winner Ginger Punch is running today at Saratoga: Ginger Punch tries 10 furlongs.

Looking for more feedback: NTRA Marketing Task Force.

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

For Canadians: Canadian Horse Defense Coalition Call to Action.

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyKey, Genny and the rest of the glorious gang in Equine Heaven.

On their behalf, here:

MORNING POST/ShelleyA, Debra, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 18

Although Congress has now recessed until September 8, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. There is a list on the DB and the Wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts. We now have 36 committments which is great!!

As well as calling DC, this is a perfect time to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. Below is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them.

http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/legislation/110_equinecruelty_hr6598.pdf

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598, the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. It is not necessary to answer complicated questions or try to explain the bill. Sometimes "less is more"!!

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!!

Thanks,

Shelley and Deb

Just a few more days to HONOR DR. RICHARDSON'S BIRTHDAY! Donations to Kennett Florist for cake and other goodies will be accepted through Tuesday, 8/26; donations to the Laminitis Fund earmarkd "in honor of Dr. Richardson's birthday" will be accepted through Thursday, 8/28.

Please check the link for more information...

I know that economic times are very tough (and there are soooo many horses to save), but if everyone contributed to this effort in some small way, we would surely have a fitting tribute to this fine man!

Thank you.

TGIF FOBs,

Den is in surgery at the moment and I'm going to work for an hour or two so I won't be nervous waiting at the hospital. I can't believe it is raining again. Thankfully not in torrents like it was the other day.

My prayers for all FOBs and those they love.

Hiya, FsOB! TGIF! Brent & I shall head over to Block Island on the ferry today for a day trip, looking forward to trekking those beach rose-covered hillocks once more. May each of you have a golden day and a superb weekend! May all of the horses & their riders stay safe. Peace, RMH

#### Thank you, dear little sister, Lou Ann in PA, for your birthday greetings!
To Janice: Thinking of you & Denny this morning. I would think that the procedure today should be a quick one. May it bring Denny some relief to his symptoms! Please give Marshmellow a pet for me, OK?
To Maribel: Yes, I grew up in the era of watching reruns of movies featuring Roy Rodgers & Dale Evans and the Lone Ranger & Tonto. Would Trigger ever have been abandoned or sold for slaughter? Of course not! There would've been a riot of Baby Boomer children if they'd tried.
To Debbie in CO: Yes, it would be great to find some mechanisms to treat laminitis more efficaciously or better yet prevent its onset. Every small contribution to UPENN's LRF will help bring that goal closer to fruition.
To Sherry in AZ: Glad that you & Amigo are doing better this week. ####

Hello childrens
Have just about the last week cleaning up after dogs chumming all over the house.

Washing machine churning away. Not much sleep. Bought extra detergent, blankets, paper towels.

We had one of the fosters bring hookworm into the pack, and yes...just about 60% of them have it. About the only way to get rid of hook in the soil is to plow the yard under....grand.

Hook makes dogs nauseous...I am now having to go back on my decision to treat parasites as they
showed themselves. Rather than put these pesticide-sensitives hounds on Interceptor every month.

The new kids get wormed as they come in. So I am now on my sleepy way down to the vets (THIS IS AT LEAST AN HOUR ROUND TRIP...)to pick up some extra fembendaziole to finish the last dosage...three treatments in three days.....oy. in their food.

I just hate it. Pesticides, one way or another. And we wonder why our dogs die of cancers...

Have a fine weekend everyone...call your congressperson and SCREAM AT THE LEETLE AIDES!!!
Just kiddin, sorry, moment of weakness...

After this 2 years plus calling these trolls, I consider politicians in the same category as the lowest of criminals...disguised, of course, in their expensive suits and shoes.

AND OF COURSE, I WILL SOON BE ENTERING MY OLYMPIC WITHDRAWAL PERIOD...it's terrible, I'll have to go to support groups:

HELLO. I'M JONNA AND I AM AN OLYMPIC JUNKIE.

sigh.

CLEAN SWEEP CONGRESS.....If they cannot hear or do the will of the people...whom they work for....well....CLEAN SWEEP CONGRESS.

I agree with Jonna...some (not all) are on the bottom of the list as far as service is concern...and while they are vacationing.

HORSES ARE DYING....ANIMALS ARE BEING MISTREATED.....and some of Congress has no care in the world...

I love my country....I am very upset with my government...they could do lots better....LOTS BETTER.

I just spoike with my Leelte Aide at Walsh's ofdfice. MIND YOU: this guy does NOT have to worry about re-election. HE'S RETIRING!!! HE CAN CO-SPONSOR WITH HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT PISSING OFF HIS AG BUDDIES!

But blah, blah,. "we've always voted in favor of this measure, blah, supported this movements, blah,"

"YES," I SAID "BUT WE NEED CO-SPONSORS WITHOUT WHOM PELOSI WILL NOT BRING THIS BILL TO THE FLOOR!!!!"

I suggested to his Syracuse peeps that he imagine all those beautiful horses he will see--at the NYS Fair going on 1st day today, right in the middle of the damned city--with 30 cents chalked on this flanks.

They do not get it. This man has NOTHING TO LOSE!
So frustrating.

**************************************************
Friday, August 22nd... I was told it only took 3 hours. Yesterday in a Northern California chat room, $450.00 was raised to save the life of a beautiful palomino mare. The mare was at a feed lot near the town of Pittsburgh. She is now safe with our friend Nikki in Vacaville, and a big Thank You to Stephanie Diaz for providing transportation.

An older quarter horse gelding with bad feet now belongs to Tbfriends, and it was Rachel Jeffers who brought him to our attention. The old guy is hungry, so we have moved him to a foster home with green grass and shade. He once was a saddle horse for a cattle ranch, but came up lame, so the cattle ranch was going to shoot him. Rachel Jeffers to the rescue. His name is Benjamin, and his new best friend is Flicka, a little mare with a red stripe down her back. Flicka is also lame. Two tubs of grain in front of them, but naturally they ate together from only one.

19 of 23 horses from a recent ranch foreclosure have new homes, and the remaining 4 have been moved to our ranch. A big Thank You to Ryan Andrews, Jennifer Wright, Stephanie Diaz and Angela Youngblood for all of their help.

A little filly with a badly injured leg comes to us from a race track on Saturday.

more to come

####Janice and Den, holding you in my thoughts today for successful outcome to Den's surgery.

###Robyn, hello to you, I always enjoy reading your posts about Nikita. I had an Alaskan Husky for 13 years whom we rescued from a not so very nice place. His name was Nicky and I miss him everyday.

###Jonna, you always bring a smile through all that you endure. You're a great picker upper for me. Reality sets in when I read your posts, for the most part they hit the nail on the head. Politicians are at the bottome of the totem pole!

###To all who have lost a beloved pet this month, my heart goes out to you for I too know the pain and heartache.

Have a safe day everyone.

PLEASE EVERYBODY- I have posted on the DB about the upcoming Fairmount park paddock sale. It is truly a KB's paradise. 85 horses in danger with a $300 minimum bid. The new rescue there is incorporated and is 5013c approved. They changed the sale date and caught everyone off guard. Any horses rescued have homes at the rescues barn to be adopted. Please pass the word, if anyone can help to purchase any OTTB's that would be great. Transportation and care is taken care of. Thanks Jen

We aren't going to be able to enlist the aid of our public officials if we trash them and their staff members, and take a position that it's "us against them", that we are The Great Hope and they are the cause of moral decline in our society.

It just won't happen, Famblee. Mutual courtesy and respect, and stronger efforts to create understanding. We have to make the want to help us.

***************************************************
An older gelding from a race track in Los Angeles comes to us on Monday, and he is said to be sound.

Military Rhythm leaves us early Saturday morning for his new home with Lisa in Bethel Island, and we will miss him. Military Rhythm is personality plus, and not once has he been a problem.

More than 120 readers of Tbfriends said sure, they would love to volunteer at a weekend camp for teenagers who live in a youth shelter. Your response was overwhelming. If all goes as planned, the first weekend camp will be towards the end of September. I very much appreciate your phone calls and letters. There could be 15 teenagers and 125 volunteers. I better shop at Costco...

Animal Control brought us another special needs kitten, and we have named her Zoe. She sits in my lap as we speak. Already Zoe thinks she owns the joint.

A special hello to Kelly who lives in Orinda. Kelly went to Bay Meadows race track last week, and a trainer friend of ours gave her a handsome dark gelding with 4 white socks. The trainer told Kelly the gelding is so slow he had morning clockers giggling. Kelly has named him Comet, and he will be given the rest of this year and all through the winter to graze and play. Next spring Kelly hopes to start Comet over small jumps.

A special hello to Aubrey who lives in Roseville. Aubrey sent Cathy and I a beautiful drawing of her dog Duke. A package of horse cookies for horses. A large box of Skittles for humans. And a picture of herself at her first riding lesson. Aubrey is 8, and she asks if I could shout out to the world how much she loves horses. Well okay then. Anything for a box of Skittles.

Enjoy your 91 degree Friday, and be sure to hug your horses. You can continue ignoring pictures below. Kodak program is goofy.

Cheryl: are you under 30 years of age?

I understand what you're wishing, what you're saying.....but girl, it just ain't so. I don't think politicians respect their constituents. I do not think they deserve our adulation.

Parker Brothers should make a board game of the US Congress. It IS broken. It needs to be radically overhauled. We need more minorities. We need many more women. We need term limitations. We need, we need, we need...so much.

YES there are some great ones...but sadly, shamefully, they are in the minority. If the current politicians in office in Washington are our Great Hope, then I, personally despair. I have spoken very frankly with my local peeps. They get it. I believe they look forward to the changes forthcoming with a new congressman from District 25 in NY. So should we all. Upstate NY is in a serious, economic depression. Our largest employer is Syracuse University/Over 100 applicants for ANY job posted there.

We are becoming a larger complex of medical entities, but I have to wonder, who can afford to go to these hospitals, go to these doctors. It is very very very sad.

If you are indeed so young, then I put my hopes for the future of our country in your hands. Because I have been deeply involved over the years--for naught.

Happy Birthday, Robyn! Hope this year is the best ever, that you have a blessed day today and always.

I received a note from Jan saying Den is out of surgery, all went well, and he didn't even know that he'd had the procedure. (anesthesia) Wrote back that I'm worried about her. He's in good hands. She seems so sad and scared. She needs us, Famblee.

Hi Jonna...30?? THANK YOU :) nope turned 41 on August 10th. Teased Harriette about not really being twins :) anyway, not about adulation, and I completely agree with what you said about reform that is needed in congress, and believe that the elected officials have to shed their attitude that they wear teflon suits and we'll buy anything their spin doctors throw at is. My comment was more pertinent to several posts that appeared here yesterday, and I just worry about who reads this and that if we don't keep our comments more objective, then we won't be taken seriously. I really am concerned about that.

Was wondering if the chewable version of MBZ might be less costly?? dunno, haven't priced it but it seems like it might be easier to give??

sorry about the hookworms. They are NASTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! :P

Happy Birthday Robyn....

Cheryl and Jonna...I agree with you both...I think it would be nice if there were term limitations....because I think once a person gets there...they get to comfortable with their surroundings, etc.

But yes...I will not bash them...because there are several I give duly respect...but there are a few....which I think needs a clean sweep...if you know what I mean.

jonna, you have my sympathy with the sick ones at your house. I once had a litter of 11 lab puppies and they all got sick with something (thank gosh it wasnt parvo), They were about 5 weeks old. Took all of them to the emergency clinic and they got shots. However, it was a few days before it really started working. 11 pups all going to the bathroom almost constantly. I barracaded a very large utility room and spread newspapers. I figure I must have used 5 or 6 hundred pounds of papers. Once I had to make an emergency run to 7-11 in the middle of the night for more papers. They all finaly got okay. It looked like stephen king horrow movie there for a while. All pups were sold before they were born out of my show champion, Belle. I then spayed her and retired from the puppy business. Hang in there.

August 22 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

In a sense the American Indian lived a freer life than any other race. They had no boundaries, and many lived in tepees that were cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They moved south in the cold weather and north when it was hot. They ate off the land and kept it in good condition without becoming slaves to it. They wore the very best furs and rode the best horses, and they worshipped God in the purest sense.

Every morning the Cherokee prayed near the stream and then bathed in it--summer and winter. He protected his honor and that of his tribe. He did not litter the land or contaminate the streams, and he fought when he had reason to fight. Because he lived so close to nature, he was something of a poet and loved deeply.

These were Indians and they left us that legacy.

Who gave you the countries that you now inhabit, and by what right do you possess them?

Paraplegic Foal Update: Lucky as a Long Yearling
by: Christy West, TheHorse.com
August 22 2008, Article # 12080

Last year we brought you the unique story of Lucky, a Quarter Horse foal rendered paraplegic at about two weeks of age by an abscess pressing on his spinal cord. Veterinarians at North Carolina State University devised a special treatment for his abscess, and with the help of his devoted owners, he pulled through. Today at more than 17 months of age, Lucky isn't completely back to normal and may never be, but he's close enough that his owners are happy with the result (and he's continuing to improve).

"He's walking good and he acts like a racehorse with his halter and chain on; he always wants to go fast," says his owner Anita Powell, of Clayton, N.C.

[note - pic that I can't copy] Lucky, clearly no longer paraplegic despite lingering incoordination in his hind end, works out with his horse ball.

He also shows off his improved athletic ability with a horse ball, she reports. "Some people walk their dogs or sit by a pool (for recreation); we sit by Lucky's lot and watch him play with his ball," she says with a laugh. "I can't tell if he loves it or wants to kill it, but I think playing with it has made him a lot stronger. We can tell him to go get the ball and he will. He's actually got very good aim with it too--he's pegged one of my friends and a visiting veterinarian with it.

"He canters as nice as any horse, but when he's trotting, he'll still take a few good steps and then shuffle a little, especially if he's excited," she adds. Despite Lucky's increasing size, he's also improved in other areas--he no longer needs a sling for farrier work or trailer trips, and he's able to get up on his own.

These days, Lucky still lives indoors in Anita's dog grooming kennel, spending several hours a day outside in a paddock in sight of his dam and another mare. Anita reports that he's gotten a "horse lesson" or two from the mares, from which any stud colt can benefit.

"We haven't helped him up in over a month--although he still often doesn't get up until we tell him to," she reports. "But we don't have to go in the stall any more, we just scrub a little on the chain link (fence around his enclosure). Evidently all this exercise has been good for him."

"It's great that he's doing as well as he is considering what we started with," says Betta Breuhaus, DVM, PhD, associate professor of equine medicine at NCSU and the lead veterinarian treating Lucky when he was a foal. "I don't know how much he's continuing to improve neurologically at this point compared to just getting stronger.

"I don't know if (Anita) would do it again or if I'd recommend it unless the owner has the resources and determination that they had; most would have put him down a long time ago," she adds. "But it's good to know that this level of recovery is possible! The biggest thing I worry about is him putting a foot wrong and having some sort of catastrophic trauma, but you could certainly argue that that could happen to any horse." She hopes to visit Lucky soon to see his progress firsthand.

Day by Day

The Powells continue to take each day as it comes, trying different strategies and cues to help Lucky learn to get up and down without a consistent human prompt. He stayed outside alone one night, during which he clearly laid down and got up on his own (wet coat on one side from laying in the grass, but standing when his caretakers checked on him). However, as the temperature and bugs have ratcheted up, he is being brought in again at night to keep him comfortable.

"I still wouldn't feel comfortable leaving him alone (unmonitored) for very long in case he got cast or something; we've come too far," Anita says. "I want to 'wean' him, though! He'll probably not be far from a person until he's getting up and down on his own like a normal horse, not using the walls to lay down or needing cues to get up. We can't live the rest of our lives like this, but we've made it very comfortable here. Instead of making Lucky go home, we brought home to him."

"Every time I look back at videos we've taken of him, I think he's gotten so much better," Anita comments. "Today I noticed that he's picking his hind toes up better than he was. But we've still got a ways to go. The biggest thing we need is him getting up on his own."

Lost Competitive Trail Horse Located by Luck
by: Marsha Hayes
August 16 2008, Article # 12526

A 21-year-old chestnut Morgan mare was found after being missing for over 40 hours in the Blueridge Wildlife Management Area of the 65,000 Chattahoochee National Forest.

Owner Martha Findley of Seymour, Tenn., had taken Wildflower to compete in a competitive trail event May 21, 2008. After successfully vetting in Friday evening, Wildflower was securely tied to an overhead tie line for the night. When Findley awoke near dawn Saturday morning, an empty halter hung from the line.

Ride managers Debbie and Mark Jones of Canton, Ga., mobilized forces immediately, including the Sheriff's Department of Lumpkin County. Mountain bikers in the area and other riders were enlisted to help in the search.

"I've never had a horse get away from me," said Findley, who has tallied more than 6,000 competitive miles.

Owner Findley even borrowed a competitor's stallion after the competition ended and went out looking because, "Wildflower is just such a harpie, I thought I would find her," Findley reasoned.

Devastated, Findley had to drive home Sunday to attend to an urgent family matter. She left the search to others until she could return and left on roads she had traveled upwards of 10 times. Blinded by her tears, she missed the first left turn only a half mile from camp. Through her tears, she noticed she was on an unfamiliar road and searched for a place to turn her rig around.

A man mowing his lawn near the driveway Findley selected for her reversal asked what was wrong. He found her story interesting since he had discovered horse manure and horse tracks all over his yard early Sunday morning. He didn't own a horse.

Searchers were immediately summoned and calling "Wildflower," the mare was found "in pristine condition," according to her overjoyed owner.

Before her journey home, Wildflower was returned to and paraded through camp to the cheers of all involved with the ride and search. Wildflower's baffling disappearance and "happenchance" recovery left Findley with a weekend she would never forget.

Horse Trades Police Beat for Broadway Tunes
21 August 2008

HONG KONG -- For years, Russian rider Alexandra Korelova quietly observed a particular police horse that lived at her riding club's stables and decided that he was a champion.

Balagur, a grey stallion so pale that he appears to have been daubed pink in places, made such an impression on Korelova between his shifts with the local police that she decided to speak to her trainer about the horse.

"I saw him for a long time, for years, and I spoke with my trainer, who said 'take him now quickly and come to me,'" said the 31-year-old from Nizhny Novgorod.

"[My trainer] saw in this horse a personality and character, and made a sportsman out of him."

Korelova rode Balagur to sixth place in the final of the individual dressage grand prix on Tuesday with a score of 72.625 percent.

In Hong Kong's Olympic arena under floodlights and a bright moon, Balagur arched his thick, short neck and piaffed and pirouetted his way to Broadway musical themes.

"When he sees such a big public and such a big stadium he likes to be the best and [do] a little bit more than anyone else," said Korelova. "I like this music and my horse likes it too."

The razzle-dazzle of freestyle dressage, where riders choreograph balletic movements for their horses to music, is a far cry from Balagur's previous drudgery in his work with the Russian police.

"First, he's very clever, and second, he doesn't want to go back to the police. He understands his life is better and more interesting now," Korelova said.

Hello everyone,

Thanks to all for your prayers and kind thoughts.

I just got home from the hospital. Den's surgery went well. The doctor said he really needed the device. He said his heart actually stopped beating once during the procedure but that an external defibrillator was hooked up so he was never in any danger. Hopefully he'll come home tomorrow. It's been a long day - awake since 4:30 to have him at the hospital by 6. So, I'll be heading to bed soon.

Have a great weekend everyone.
