Barbaro Updates: 663

updates are now here.

Update 3927: I got to see both mother and father race: Filly foal for Maybe Diva.

Found on equidaily.

Update 3926: Update from today from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

These are some beautiful mornings we are having and both horses and riders are enjoying it. Today is Thursday and Tim has a busy day. Rajasthan is running at Laurel Park and Sweet Ginger Brown will be making her first start at Penn National in the first race. Tim will be going to Penn for the first time starter to make sure she has a good experience. Rajashthan has loads of experience and racing is no big deal to him. Hopefully he will run a bang up race. Ginger has been doing great and it will be great to get an idea of what she can do. You can never be really certain how they will race until they are actually racing. There are some horses that really can go in the morning but put them into a tight spot in racing conditions and they don't fair very well.

Who's Happy will be racing on Saturday at Philadelphia Park and she is doing great. Lilly (Happy's little sister) worked a great quarter mile yesterday and Tim is getting excited about her. She is a tough filly who pins her ears when being tacked up and reaches out to bite people as they walk by. She now stands behind a screen for safety.

Paris Night worked three eighths yesterday and did it quite well with Robbie aboard. Veiled Reference looks forward to going to the track everyday. She is a very active girl. Miss M.V.P. is growing taller and I believe Tim reported that she worked her first half with him a few days ago and handled it just fine. Vicar's Tune continues to be his usual lovey and quiet self. What a personality. Anyway, wish Tim luck today at the races and hopefully the horses will run well.

Update 3925: Superfecta here, with a special extra message about a project Alex and I are involved in:

As Dana put it, the rumors are indeed true; a few of us horse racing blogger types (along with a number of other fine people affiliated with the racing industry) have been arguing working on the NTRA Marketing Task Force for the past few weeks. We're not all going to Vegas (although as I understand it, what happens there, stays there - so I suppose taglines do work) since 1) getting that many racing bloggers in a room might create a disturbance in the Force and 2) it's expensive to fly these days and some of us are far too busy with our real jobs to take the time out. (Although I did find it odd that the upside of missing the conference is that some of our ages remain a secret).

Nevertheless, I'm sure we will be well represented and the debate and discussion generated so far has been very useful. What I find most encouraging is that the NTRA realized there was a gap as far as reaching out to fans old and new and is making a real effort to try and find ways in which to fill it.

So, here's your chance to tell the NTRA what you think - what messages would you like to pass along? How would you market racing to new fans? What beer do you wish your local track served? Tell us here.

Update 3924: Another lovely morning this morning at Woodbine. We had seven sets, four before the break and three after the break. I had a couple go to the gate for some schooling. All went nicely. I also rode the pony, Charlie, for one set. He was very relaxed and enjoying his tasks. During the break I went to the track kitchen and had a coffee with Brian, from Brian Lynch's. We discussed my recent visit to OLEX. It's great people here are reading about this stuff!

We have a runner this afternoon in the first race, so I will return to help out a little. We had a runner in the last race last night, who finished third. We were all a little tired this morning!

Update 3923: Pyro is the morning line favorite for the Travers Stakes, drawing post 11: Pyro morning-line favorite for Travers Stakes. Steve Asmussen also has the likely favorite of the The King's Bishop, J Be K: Talented three-year-old sprinters converge on King's Bishop. Both races are run this Saturday and broadcast on ESPN.

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

For Canadians: Canadian Horse Defense Coalition Call to Action.

Hiya, FsOB! There was a great blog entry which was blue-linked at the top of yesterday's entry. The story is about Lentenor exploring the hills around Fair Hill Farm. Very enjoyable reading! Can I possibly be first today? Let's see!

#### To Janice & our FsOB in FLA, I hope the rains from Fay have abated. Take care. ####

Good morning, fellow Fans!

What glorious weather we are having in the Downeast this week! Must be a payback for the rain earlier this month!

##Robyn Hoffmann - I, too, loved the image created of Nicanor frolicking about Fair Hills. Well, not being too exuberant but getting his work done.

Prayers again to all experiencing the challenges of weather, health, and life in general.

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyKey, Genny and the rest of the glorious gang of Heavenly Equines.

On their behalf, here:

MORNING POST/ShelleyA, Debra, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 18

Although Congress has now recessed until September 8, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. There is a list on the DB and the Wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts. We now have 36 committments which is great!!

As well as calling DC, this is a perfect time to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. Below is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them.

http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/legislation/110_equinecruelty_hr6598.pdf

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598, the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. It is not necessary to answer complicated questions or try to explain the bill. Sometimes "less is more"!!

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!!

Thanks,

Shelley and Deb

Good morning everyone,

For those of you who light candles, Barbaro's are getting very low - barely over 100. Please light some candles in his memory and in honor of his legacy.

Thank you!

Alex, how often do horses get to train in the Fair Hill countryside like Nicanor? Is that common at fair Hill? I would think so, but I don't remember reading that you did that for Tim.

Posted by: mj at August 21, 2008 3:43 PM

mj, i regularly went outback at fair hill. some trainers use the hills and fields more than others for sure.

It's thursday FOBs and 2 weeks since we said good-bye to Kaiser. It's not any easier. I think I'm going to stop talking about it here.

Periods of rain on and off but nothing like yesterday. I can see that some of the high water around here has subsided. I'm thinking of trying to make it to the store (close by) but I'll make that call after I go out and take a look around.

Renee - I don't know if you saw my post last night in response to your question about living near your friend in Melbourne - I work in Melbourne and live right next door in Palm Bay.

I have to admit that I am a bit nervous about Den's procedure tomorrow. It's a common, simple surgery, but I just know that with Den, nothing is ever simple.

Have a good day everyone.

August 21 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

A person has to have enough confidence in himself to go ahead and run a good race, even when he knows it is going to be grueling and that he might not be the winner. But that is so much better than sitting down and saying to himself that he isn't good enough to try.

Most people tend to lean on the belief that they are not good enough. But no one starts out good enough. It is the getting up and getting into living that makes us good enough. At times self-esteem melts like ice in the sun, but it certainly does not mean we do not qualify. The fight is not with others-but with ourselves. We have to overcome ourselves and all our hidden voices that tell us we are not going to make it.

I am here on my own ground and I will never go back. You can kill me here but you cannot make me go back.

Good Morning Alex.
Good Morning Tim and Fair Hill.

Our precious Fallen Angels...we are here.

#####
I get so......disgusted....Congress can take off whenever and however they please...

Do they not have hearts, conscious, anything...knowing every second, every moment, a beautiful horse is barbaric slaughtered.????

Sometimes I would love to have a march or petition to say clean house on Capitol Hill....

Hope I did not offend anyone....but our horses need us...and we need Capitol Hill to go to work.

Alex
Some of my favorite photos of Barbaro are the ones taken while on one of the trails with Peter and Michael. He looks so happy in those pictures. That was one of the things I enjoyed about him.He did everything with enthusiasm .He always appeared to be enjoying his work just like it was a big game for him...a toy to be played with. I truly do believe that in his races he toyed with the opposition.
The derby being a good case in point....he left the pack in the dust like they were standing still with NO EFFORT !!It was like "OK guys it's been fun talking with you but I have a race to win,see y'all later Edgar and I gotta go now"!!! LOL
Those were the days.......

Keep phoning and faxing those leetle aides.
It's not over till the fat lady sings and I've lost a whole lotta weight !! LOL
Let's gettum!!! Enough is enough!!

DEFEAT IS NOT AN OPTION!!!

NTRA Task Force

I guess they really don't want to hear from people like us??? Otherwise they would have picked Alex Brown Racing as one of the Blogs??!!!

So is there really any point in giving our opinion?Seems like they just want to hear the same old things from the same old people??? WE are the new generation and WE the baby boomers have the cash!! Unfortunately ..WE WANT THEIR ACT TO CLEAN UP! Who gives a rats a@@ what kind of beer they sell!!!!

I just want them to start caring in a BIG WAY about the horses! I'm tired of horses lying in a dead heap on the track and everyone including the track officials treating them like they're garbage to be hauled off in a dumpster!!! We have to beat the bushes to even find out what happened to these horses! That's why they aren't getting any new monied fans!!! We're too busy spending our money saving horses that they treat as garbage!!

As Natzger said at the Hall of Fame induction...
"It's all about the horses."
TOO BAD NO ONE IS LISTENING!!!

I could go on but I'm preaching to the choir.....

### Tell them it is hard being a fan when almost 40% of the horses you watch are being killed when they are through racing. That is what needs to be fixed. Other than the breakdowns and Drugs, which are huge issues also. CLEAN UP THE SPORT! that would be my #1 issue. Jen

Only 5 days left to contribute to KF for Dr. Richardson's birthday basket and cake. Alie said costs have gone up this year. Please spare a few of dollars for Barbaro's buddy. Deadline is the 26th. KF phone # 610-444-6040

Only 7 days left to donate to the Laminitis Fund in honor of Dr. Richardson. Please be sure to mark your donation "in honor of" Dr. Richardson's birthday. Laminitis is the dreaded disease which finally took our beloved Barbaro. I pray that it is eradicated in our lifetime.

Skyler has suggested a vigil for 7 p.m. Eastern time on August 30th to remember those who are working to defeat laminitis. Please spare a few minutes that evening. Reminders will be posted on the 30th.

Thanks to everyone who has donated and helped with blue-linking and reminders.

Good Afternoon Gang.

I can't believe I am one of the minions that have been boonswaggled all of these years. Is there ANY equine event that has NOT used drugs all along to enhance 'performances'????? The doping going on in the Olympics is not only steroids, but also something that makes the horse's skin so sensitive that they don't WANT to touch the rails. What the *%$@ is that all about???? For God's sake people!!!!

And how did they experiment to know this drug would work??? I am VERY disgusted and repulsed by those people today. VERY disgusted. I trust no one. Sorry.

Maybe the industry should invent robotic equines. That way they can control every single aspect.

Janice, if it helps to talk about Kaiser please continue. We care and we understand. Hope Den does well.

Posted by: sandra at August 21, 2008 7:35 PM

JoanRoya, perhaps that is the reason congress had a 7% approval rating. ###Well, we talk about everything here. I guess last night I had food poisoning. Up until 3am and got so thirsty and dehydrated I started carving a nice glass of beer with ice in it. Well. big mistake. Took a few sips and got sick and was racing to the bathroom and spilled the whole glass on the carpet. When I finally staggered back to the living room Chief had lapped almost a whole glass of beer up. He was like "Man. this is the best stuff I have ever had". It didnt make him sick but he did sleep a little later than usual this morning.

Posted by: sandra at August 21, 2008 7:41 PM

Maribel - we all share your frustration. So I guess if they don't get it, we keep making noise until they do.

######
CindiLou - good grief it has been a long time. I'm so glad that you didn't forget about us. So sorry to learn that you lost a beloved dog (If I remember, I think you had 3. I do hope you get a computer hooked up soon and will be able to join us again. I stopped using the chat room. It was too late at night for me. I'm an "early to bed, early to rise" person.

I know I said I wouldn't discuss Kaiser anymore but I just wanted to share this - in today's mail we got a card from the Vet clinic - signed by all the staff with personal messages from 2 of the Vets that worked with Kaiser. One of the Vets lost his dog at exactly the same time. There was a donation made in Kaiser's memory to the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine to help fund research in animal diseases. It took me almost 10 minutes to read the card to Den, I couldn't keep it together, kept breaking down. Sob, read, sob, read etc. OK - enough.

I did make it to the store and was amazed at how much the water went down. Of course I didn't go far - the store is close by. But - it just started raining again. Probably some of Fay's outer bands. I don't expect it will be anything like the last few days unless she decides to turn around and head back this way again. I just heard on the news that Fay will cross the northern part of the state and then COULD travel to the Gulf and become a hurricane. Yikes!

##3 Margie- every part of the horse industry uses despicable practices. The western pleasure people tie their horses to their chests for hours so they learn to bend better. One trainer I know of ties his horses heads as high up in the air to the walls and makes them stand there for the whole day. they love sore mouths, so they stay off the bit.

JOE: on life and lub
*******************************************************
Thursday, August 21st... A brand new thingamajig. Couples who have met each other on our ranch. Ryan and Heather are engaged. Mike and Jessica are never apart. Another Jessica, and for over a year she has been dating Anthony.

Of course Jennifer and Scott also met for the first time on our ranch, they dated for two years, and had a horrible break up. Jennifer says it was the worse period of her life.

I showed a photo of our friend Sarah on my morning journal, and that very day a girl who went to elementary school with Sarah phoned and now the two are reunited. I showed a photo of our friend Brenda at her barn birthday party, and a girl who went to preschool with Brenda wrote and now the two are reunited.

Which brings us to the brand new thingamajig. There is Face Book, and My Space. Why not Horse Book? Or Horse Space? Construction is almost underway.

On our ranch in the last several years there have been hundreds of girls who visit. Many say they wish they could meet a guy who loves horses.

There are certainly enough girls for Horse Space, or Horse Book. Now we just need a few male folks to sign up.

Another brand new thingamajig. Teenagers from youth shelters have been visiting Tbfriends to learn about horses. I figure if one kid begins to love horses, both the kid and a horse will benefit. So far, from dozens of teenage kids, two have fallen for horses. Which is not enough. They are only on our ranch for an hour or so, which is also not enough. So why not a weekend camp? Allow the teenagers to sleep with horses. They can spend the entire weekend cleaning, feeding, and dreaming with horses. We are working on a solution to rising insurance premiums.

And of course we would need volunteers to stay with these teenagers. Give me a call if you can help. We are hoping for a first weekend camp before the weather turns cold.

I have been with a few of these kids for more than two years. They are not criminals. Just a lousy situation at home, and they had to leave. Some are at a point where they might choose the wrong road. If given a chance, horses can set them straight.

All kinds of stuff in the crock pot. Not enough time, not enough money, not enough lousy insurance coverage. Horse killer Manny Phelps has agreed to one hour of visitors at his feed lot in Wilton. The purpose would be to educate, and hopefully turn horse people into horse rescue people.

On this beautiful Thursday morning, and later we could be 91 degrees. Strong coffee is from Starbucks, and stale chocolate chip cookies were made by Nabisco. 109 horses decorate our poop on top of poop landscape. A blast in the boonies...

Gang, I guess these people that force animals into this type of hyper manipulation think that we're all self righteous. I can't even begin to tell you how this latest news of the sensitive skin drugging has pushed me into another place. I trust no one, even those I know. I guess this was the last straw for me. Until proven otherwise, horse people are suspect to me.

If the horses skin is so sensitive that they don't want to hit the rails, what the hell is the saddle doing to them????

This news was reported matter-of-factly by the woman announcer at the Olympic jumping.

I still say to these idiots - create the perfect robot. Torture them all you want. All you need to worry about is a good programmer. Oh. But then there's no money in breeding if it's a robot.

Hoping For Retirement for a Million Dollar Winner

Saratoga update - My Cousin Matt is a 9 year old gelding who's won over a million dollars and ran in the 2004 Breeders Cup Sprint.

August 21, 2008: Today, Trainer JAMES FERRARO saddled up My Cousin Matt - obviously lame - for a $16,000 claiming race, the 2nd at Saratoga (6.5 furlongs, dirt) His owner is listed as VINCENT S. SCUDERI.

Thanks to an easy ride under Jockey Jeffrey Sanchez the horse wasn't pushed beyond his limit and finished last. The old warrior left the track even more lame and was claimed for $16,000 by Bruce Brown.

We have reason to be hopeful this is the last time My Cousin Matt will have to race. With a million dolllars in paychecks he's earned a dignified, safe and happy retirement. Will keep you posted!

Posted by: Susan in Saratoga at August 21, 2008 11:38 PM

Maribel - Alex is indeed on the Task Force, so naturally horse welfare issues are on very much on the table. But we're also asking how to cater to fans - and I, for one, want good beer at the track!

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH . . .

Posted by: CJaffe at August 22, 2008 12:46 AM

here is the update on Aurora with the terrible reproductive tear that had to be surgically repaired...Good news from Laurie B so far: from her email
*************************************************
She is out of surgery!!!!! It took them 5 hours to repair the tear. The Dr. thought that he was going to have to do it in 2 stages but was then able to get it accomplished in one. She is not going to be reproductively sound, but that's fine. Right now she is on heavy duty pain killers and Lidocaine enemas to encourage her to pass manure. Since it will be extremely painful for her to pass manure they are trying to eliminate the pain factor so she doesn't colic on us. She is staying at least until tomorrow afternoon. She will be coming home on Bute, Lidocaine enemas, Pennicllin ,and Naquasone. She will need to go back and be re-checked to make sure that she is NOT pregnant (if she is we will terminate) and to check her reporductive organs. They are going to try and check while sh eis there, but they are not going to risk the surgery site tearing, so if she isn't relaxed anough or the swelling is too great, they are not going to check. They couldn't do it before because the tissue was so torn they couldn't get through well enough. She will be on an all wet diet and if she stopps passing manure at all needs to be rushed back immediately so that they can manually clear her out. They were able to get her feet done with Dormosedan and she still clocked the farrier 5 times doing her back feet. Teeth got power floated last night she had some sharp edges nothing earth shattering and she is 3 coming 4 like we thought.

Hiya, FsOB! I've hoped all day that the rains in south FLA would abate for our FsOB there. I put my card for Dr. Richardson in the mail to Kennett Square earlier tonight. If anyone is keeping a tally, now I am addressing a $25.00 check to UPENN for the Laminitis Research Fund. I'll send that directly to the UPENN address. May each of you have "ACN". Peace, RMH

#### To Janice, we are all here for you & Denny. Please know that probably 99.9% of us here have mourned the passing of a beloved pet, so you shouldn't ever feel uncomfortable sharing your feelings about Kaiser. What a kind gesture on the part of Kaiser's vet. I've taken all my Huskies to one vet service in Middletown, CT, since relocating to CT in 1985. They were very thoughtful when Nikita's predecessors died; they even served as a character witness when I decided to pursue adopting a Husky in 2002. And that dear Husky is none other that Nikita.
To Cindilou, welcome back. It is always a treat to see one of our FsOB from the early days.
To Judy Scott in Ontario, great seeing you here today, Judy!
To Sandra: Oh, my goodness! Chief lapping the beer, what a picture you painted with words. I told some younger colleagues the other day about my late Husky Nina. (I often think that my Nikita may be my Nina reincarnated.) When I lived in KY and was in my 20s, my ex & I would have an annual party known as the "May blow-out". There would be kegs of beer in the backyard. One year I thought that Nina had run away during the party. I searched the tiny house frantically and asked all of the guests if they'd seen my "little grey dog" (and no, Huskies don't actually look little, do they?). One of the guests whom I didn't know said, "No, but there is something grey behind your toilet in the bathroom." Well, the "grey something" was Nina. She'd apparently been stationed by the keg & kept licking the spray from the tap. So she drank to her heart's content and then went behind the toilet, where it was very cool, and proceeded to fall asleep. Wow, did I ever revisit that story in my memory when told us about Chief and the beer last night. Too funny, I hope that he didn't have a headache or an upset stomach from that escapade.... ####

## CJ - Foxy - what a beautiful kitty - and I am sorry that she is gone. WHEW - it has been a really tough August - many losses for the FsOB - tomorrow will be 3 weeks since Chico is gone - and I'm real happy to report in and say that AMIGO and I are doing well.

And - YES, CJ - I remember the "Goldbergs !!"

A chicago thing, maybe - as that's my home town also !

Sherry - Arizona now - where it is relentlessly HOT

Superfecta

Interesting that you picked up on my comment about the beer out of the whole dialogue??? The important message was that "It's all about the horses".

As long as this industry focuses on beer...drugs etc . it is going nowhere FAST!!!

This industry NEEDS TO BE SQUEAKY CLEAN to attract and continue to attract new fans.I couldn't recommend this sport to a family with kids the way it is today.

What ever happened to "The Sport of KINGS"?????
It has turned into the sport of druggies and abusers!!!!

I grew up in the age of National Velvet ...My Friend Flicka ...Seabiscuit...there was some respect....a child could dream !!!

The dream has become a nightmare and the horses are the ones doing all the suffering!!!

RESPECT has to be earned....SHOW ME SOME!!!!

I realize that this probably won't be a popular dialogue for some readers but it is my opinion and if it gets the horses some decent treatment ...it was worth it!!!

### Robyn Hoffman,

Thank you for your generous donation to the Laminitis Fund. Wouldn't it be wonderful if laminitis were eradicated within the next 5 or 10 years? The FOBs would have had a small part in that victory.

Thanks again.

Despite life occasionally keeping me away from here every now and then . . . .this very sacred place and all of you are forever in my heart!

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!

And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd as you know you take me to where angels walk . . . . and as our own Angel Dee says, "It is AFFIRMED!"

Prayers and hugs always to those with heavy hearts, those missing very special loved ones, those not feeling well, and those in the path of bad weather. . . .
Holding hands, paws, hooves with the entire Barbaro Nation.

And it now being officially the early wee hours of Friday, August 22, I would like to wish our FOB ROBYN in CT (yes, Nikita's mum!)
HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and many more to come!!!!

JAN in FLORIDA - Sending continued prayers and thoughts to you & Den today, too. Keep us posted on Den's procedure.
And never hesitate to talk of your precious KAISER! And thank you for sharing about the kindness of your veterinary staff, sending you the special remembrance for KAISER. I had tears just reading that.

#########
C.J. - No matter whether eight or eighty "kitties" call your place "home", I can only imagine how very much Foxy's space is so very empty right now. Thinking of you . . . .

Love to all,
Lou Ann
