Barbaro Updates: 661

updates are now here.

Update 3917: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

The biggest racing news of the past 24 hours is the death of Genuine Risk; as a tribute, Washingtonian.com has re-published a great 2002 article detailing her racing success, breeding troubles and eventual happy retirement. Genuine Risk's Derby is the first one I can clearly remember looking forward to and watching on television (and hey, I picked the winner), so her death is particularly poignant. The 'oldest living Derby winner' tag has been passed to another of my favorites, Alysheba.

A small aside - Alysheba's success on the track was, at the time, the focus of some consternation since there was a perception that he needed Lasix to run his best races (and one which seemed fairly justified by his results without it). The great William Nack's article on how he hesitated to vote for him for Horse of the Year in 1987 for that reason is interesting re-reading in light of the current climate, although pulling Lasix back off the table isn't quite as popular a notion (yet) as getting rid of steroids.

While he was perhaps not of the same caliber as Genuine Risk, I was still saddened to hear of the death of Bowman's Band following colic surgery; the 10-year-old stallion always seemed solid on the track and ran until age 6 - that in itself can seem like a feat nowadays. But let us focus on the great mare once more; here is her Derby victory.

Genuine Risk certainly has worthy successors on the track; Proud Spell and Music Note put on quite a show in the Alabama this past weekend. The only downside to their battle is that it is likely the last time this year we will see them face off; Proud Spell is unlikely to run in the Breeders' Cup (although she may be Philly Park-bound), and Music Note's plans include a trip back to Belmont.

Racing success is not just for 3-year-olds; Ginger Punch runs in the Personal Ensign on Friday against the likes of Spring Waltz and Unbridled Belle, while Hystericalady takes to Monmouth Park on Saturday. Prior to their races, the turf fillies are in action - Wait a While, Rutherienne, Sharp Susan et al. are running in the Ballston Spa on Thursday (although I have an eye on Valbenny). The depth of the filly and mare divisions seems nearly bottomless this year.

It's a shame Eight Belles isn't around to really make them work for it.

Update 3916: Very sad news: Exercise Rider Parker Buckley Dies.

Update 3915: Paulick Report on the late and great Genuine Risk: A 'GENUINE' PLACE IN HISTORY.

Update 3914: Another thoroughly gorgeous morning this morning at Woodbine. I had eight sets, four before the break and four after the break. All my horses galloped nicely. Jimmy (McAleney) came in to work three of our horses. They seemed to work well. All in all, a lovely morning.

Update 3913: Excellent news for Woodbine, as Better Talk Now may come up here for the Canadian Intermational: Better Talk Now could be headed to Canada instead of Breeders' Cup, excerpt:

"I think we'll be more inclined to run him in the Canadian race," Motion said. "We've got to make a decision with him. I think it's unlikely we would go to the Breeders' Cup this year. That fact that it's out in California on the firm turf, it's going to be a tough race."

Here is a list of the Warren mares saved by Tranquility Farm last weekend: WARREN BROODMARES.

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyKey, Genny and the rest of the fabulous gang in Equine Heaven.

On their behalf, here:

MORNING POST/ShelleyA, Debra, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 18

Although Congress has now recessed until September 8, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. There is a list on the DB and the Wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts. We now have 36 committments which is great!!

As well as calling DC, this is a perfect time to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. Below is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them.

http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/legislation/110_equinecruelty_hr6598.pdf

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598, the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. It is not necessary to answer complicated questions or try to explain the bill. Sometimes "less is more"!!

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!!

Thanks,

Shelley and Deb

It's Tuesday FOBs and Fay is battering Florida. Right now we have lotsa rain and some winds and I guess it will just get worse today and tomorrow. So I thought I'd jump on while we still have power to ask for prayers for Denny. He's in the hospital again. Routine pre-op blood test yesterday showed hemoglobin level dangerously low so he was admitted last evening and he's scheduled for a transfusion. Apparently the problem he had last year is still there. They've done every test imaginable and can't find the source of the blood loss. The cardiac surgeon would not operate with Den in that condition, so I'm not sure what will happen. Den is hoping he will be discharged today but I'm not sharing the same hope. With his condition and the storm, I might feel safer with him in the hospital where I know he's being looked after and they won't lose power. So we'll see what the day brings. Last night was the absolute lowest I have ever seen Den. We're both hurting so much from the loss of Kaiser and then this medical problem returning and perhaps preventing the defibrillator/pacemaker implant that he needs completely overwhelmed him. Me too, but I won't show him that.

My prayers for all FOBs and those they love.
Fellow Floridians - be and stay safe.

Janice, I will keep you and Denny in my prayers. And may all Floridians be safe including my son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren in St Cloud. I've heard from my sister in Sunrise and they are doing well. And I hope for good news about Denny. God bless.

###My offer of "send us some rain" is still open--I know it's easier to send west-to-east than the other way 'round, but if it could be arranged, us Left Coasters would appreciate it.

###Kudos once again to Tranquility Farm and Priscilla Clark (is she amazing or what?!:o) for rescuing those lovely mares.

###And Phooey to whoever has removed the pedigree information from Pedigree Query on some of these rescued mares.

###To be perfectly honest, when I debated getting back into the horse world after I retired and moved here in 1998, the BIGGEST obstacle was the horse people. There is such a majority of two-legged cr*p involved in all aspects of horses.

Looks like there are still plenty of bottom-feeders--but the good guys (and wimmins ;o) and there are FAR too many to mention--are making headway.

God bless us all.

###I hope the pedigree query people go after whoever removed the pedigree information on those rescued mares and fix them good, the rats.

###Keep those hatches battened, Florida, and I'll think wet thoughts for California.

###Safe travels to everyone today, two- and four-legged.

###BTW, I read that Genuine Risk loved Tic Tacs. Lordy, she was a lovely girl.

########## reading about what Jan and Den are going through, and I feel like a dork for feeling sorry for myself. But one must take and deal with whatever comes. Yesterday I had to say goodbye to Foxy (who would have been 15 on August 23) and it was such an unexpected development and yet of all my furbabies probably the fastest and easiest final decision I ever had to make. All I can say is OY. And my heart goes out to all of you out there with real problems, such as Jan and Den. Mine was no problem at all. Easy call. But such a shock. (Vet found a huge mass on his liver; he was fading the last few days; and yesterday morning he couldn't hop up unto the cot, and the day before he fell on the way to the computer desk - he was my remaining computer cat now that Pearl is gone.) Amazing how empty a house can seem with "only" 8 cats left . . .

My grief is tempered with the knowledge that he only had a couple of bad days and no terrible days and now I can stop worrying about him. I was very worried the last few days beginning when he stopped scarfing his vitamins as if they were treats, and his condition would only have gone downhill, there was no hope. After watching me hang in there with Pearl for 9 months after the diagnosis, I think my vet was astounded that I gave the order right then and there. But Pearl had a great appetite and was not compromised by her fibrosarcoma, still was scampering and leaping about until the end. Foxy couldn't get up on his cot. ANYWAY all I can say is OY.

I'll be copying this post to the My Girl Pearl thread in the General non-horse section over at the DB if anybody wants to hold my hand. Thanks for listening and thank you for being there.

I am holding your hand, sweetie.
First, yes, if I place a couple of dogs....then have ONLY 13-14 in the house,m I can immediately tell the difference.

Second. I lost my first Irish Wolfhound--he was my first ON MY OWN dog--to liver cancer. I am told, and I believe the Vets after having been through that particular loss so many years ago, and yet so close, that it is just about painless...

So there is that little scrap of comfort.

We love our companion animals so much. They can never be mad at us--well, except Lorette who is in general furious at the world..She ran AA at Wonderland in MA until she blew out a hock running with such ferocity.

Our animals can't be upset when we color or cut our hair, come home late, even--heaven forefend--be late for dinner or any other meal--they forgive everything. They comfort and sustain our hearts and minds...and so when they go, it is such a DENSE loss.

I say dense because it always makes me feel as if I am wading through something like Jello. Everything is tougher, more cruel, complicated....
And we know that nothing will help at all but the passage of time.

So I know where you are, and so do so many here. So keep talkin' we're here.

FOR THE BLUE-LINK AND CLICK IMPAIRED, AND YES, AS DEBBIE SAID, HARD TIMES. it is scary out there.
****************************************************
It is very late Monday night and try as I might, there is no way I can do a morning journal for Tuesday. This will be the third time in two months I have failed to entertain you with endless stories of life with over 100 race horses. One thing is for certain... living with more than 100 thoroughbreds produces dozens of adventures each day.

In just a few hours I must get out of bed and start the coffee. An extra scoop of French Roast please. I am off to help a friend with her horses. Sharing details is not neccessary, other than to say times are tough for many. Our current economy leaves horses out on the streets. The saddest sight on earth is watching those who love their animals lose their animals. It is heart breaking. Decent people who lose their jobs, and in a matter of weeks all they have worked for is gone.

There is a young girl in this family, and early tomorrow morning she must say goodbye to her pony. The pony goes to another family only a few miles away, and the girl can visit anytime she wants. How do you explain to a 9 year old about losing your income? How do you tell her about an economy in the toilet, when all she really cares about is her pony?

In the last few months I have watched as good hearted folks, people who would be first in line to help others, have lost their land.

Trying so hard to count our blessings. Cathy and I know very well one small shove, either from rising feed costs, rising insurance premiums, or should one of us lose our income, we too would have to call it quits. A very scary world right now.

The t-shirt says Search For Good And Good Will Appear. And so I will return on Wednesday morning to tell you about an amazing young girl who approached me in a parking lot, and asked if I could come meet her horse.

Thank you for understanding about Tuesday. See you Wednesday.

Joe

August 19 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

It is so easy to forget that every thought and word has a lasting effect. The result may not be noticed immediately, but time has a way of playing back the tape when we least need to hear it.

Nervous tension and anger, however unintentional, may seem justified, but it never is. Too much stretch on a rubber band can bear on its weakest place and snap back to sting. Avoid putting too much pressure where it is dangerous. It is destructive and it hurts too much to take the chance.

When the tape starts saying, "They meant it for harm," respond, "But I meant it for good."

This is a glad day for me...because there is no more war between us and we meet in peace.

CJ I'm so sorry that you've lost another of your furchildren. Your strength and selfless care is so admirable. Foxy will be leaping and playing silly kidden games with Pearl now. How happy they are to have found each other in hevvin. You may feel soft brushes against your legs and see no one, but you'll know who it is. How wonderful it will be to be reunited with them and Blackie and all those who have gone on.

August 18 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brilliantawk]

Flowers keep us close to the earth and show us what repetition can do. When we are good planters and caretakers we see results--not just once but many times in many ways.

We see the garden in our minds before we plant, and we see its needs and what we can do to make it better. But the garden in the mind stretches farther than just flowers and vegetables. It needs the same careful cultivation---never letting the weed of illness or strife or discord take root. This garden blooms year round and we should refuse to let it become a weed patch.

It is a day of beauty and bright sunshine. I rejoice that we can all meet here as friends, eat our bread and meat in communion, smoke the council pipe and the pipe of peace.

My heart aches today. It aches for the loss of Genuine Risk and it aches for the loss of every one of our beloved animals and for those who have lost. CJ, do not feel like a dork, our animals fill such a large part of our hearts; they leave a huge empty spot when they move on to wait for us. Kaiser is watching too. He is waiting for his people with a happy heart.
Many are the hearts that are heavy here. We know the Firestone's and Buck Moore and everyone at Newstead Farm have heavy, heavy hearts. To them I say, Thank You. Thank you for cherishing and honoring your Champion. Thank you for giving Her the life she deserved. Thank you for showing the world how the life of a racehorse should be.

###And did we all read from the list of "other articles" on the link provided by Superfecta for Thoroughbred Times that Warren's Lady Slew won at Del Mar the other day??

###Jonna, I could not begin to figure a percentage of the "bad people versus the good" in racing. The bads seem like the majority because they get all the press, which is typical in everything. The ones who just put their "shoulders to the wheel" are the (truly) unsung heroes--they make all the difference to our beloved horses and the ones who work with them.

And their number is legion. ;O)

I remember reading once that if you put your ear to the ground, your shoulder to the wheel and your nose to the grindstone, just try to WORK in that position--and I can imagine this is how many of those quiet soldiers feel.

Someone once told me, after I had done "a good thing," that I would get "stars in my crown." My offhand remark was that frankly I would settle for shards in my trident if I could have a little positive recognition--you know, something SMALL, like a winning Lotto ticket. ;O)

There is going to be quite a run on "crown stars" when many of our quiet, hard workers reach those pearly gates, for sure--because there are more good guys than bad, betcha.

So many of them are unsung.

The good soul who saved my Huey from the feedlot is a case in point. Who he was, I haven't a clue, and no one really cares about what he did but me, in the last analysis. But his decision to send Huey to someone who would recondition him from racing horse to riding horse changed my life and Huey's future.

###The trouble is, you have to encounter the scum mixed in with the heroes--and sometimes you can't tell the difference until it's too late. By their very nature, dishonest people aren't upfront.

Darn it. ;O)

"Official" Update - Cosponsors/Commitments for HR 6598 - Current Strategy

Update Tuesday 8/19/08

Hello fellow FOBs and antislaughter advocates. Deb asked me to fill you all in via an UPDATE of where we stand on cosponsors/commitments for HR 6598. This list includes not only those Reps listed at thomas.gov as cosponsors, but also those who have committed to cs 6598 but the official paperwork will not show up on thomas.gov until after the congressional recess is over. These commitments have been confirmed by our DC contacts.

The GRAND TOTAL thus far is 37 (including Conyers and Burton, the Reps whose names are on our bill).

SAD SAD SAD that Big Brown is racing in the Breeders Cup on that FIRM TURF with his known foot problems!!
Alotsa prayer will be needed again to ensure his safety in that one ! Too bad there is so much EGO involved and not enough thought for this lovely boy.
He should have the caring owners and trainers that Better Talk Now has.....

STAY SAFE...BIG BROWN you are a sweetheart!!!

Prayers for the family of Genuine Risk. How fortunate you were to have had peeps that adored you and cared for you no matter what!RIP dear one for you will be remembered with fondness and love forever....((((((((GenuineRisk)))))))))))

It was sweet Renee--Patroness Pro-Temp of the Feline world on Earth--who posed the query about good vs, um, not-so-good in the horse world...

(I beleve your finners wuz flyin too fass.)

Jonna, I've been thinking of you today. A good friend at work rescued a greyhound years ago. 13 year old Millie as at the end of her life now. My friend is trying to find the courage to do the right thing now. She hasn't been in the position much in her life. Breaks my heart. I've been through it too many time. Like most of us here.

Posted by: kathyb at August 19, 2008 9:13 PM

Maribel, the "firm turf" is the T-U-R-F reference that Graham Motion made regarding Better Talk Now's reason for not going to Santa Anita. BTN is a turf horse and prefers soft turf to firm.

Big Brown will be running on the synthetic surface, not the turf...

I just couldn't help it: I just had to rub the noses of Rep. Walsh's (NY)peeps in the decision of Rep Serrano's (NY) decision to co-sponsor. Of course, it did it with the aplomb that only age confers. but I did make it apparent that IT WOULD BE A PITY is Walsh were the ONLY NY REP not cosponsoring HR6598.

I say, weasely things like, "Wouldn't it be great if he could end his career supporting such important legislation--legislation that he has supported with his danged VOTE lo, these MANY (zzzzzzz) years?

WHAT IS THE FRAKKIN REASON HE WON'T ANTE UP? It's his last term in frakkin office, for Pony Boy/s sake....come on.........still trying to get an "in house " appt with the guy here in good old district 25....

###Ooops, Jonna. Your name was above the line to me in Renee's letter.

Alex and Everyone,
Please forgive me for continuing to talk about Genuine Risk. A few minutes ago, I called Newstead Farm to express my condolences and let the people know they are being thought of also. They are heartbroken as we all are.

I want to share my vision with you. I picture Genuine Risk yesterday eating her breakfast and heading to her paddock happy and content, yet knowing somehow today was her last day here. She then took one last walk around her home, taking one last look at this world, enjoying her memories and the beauty. Then, with the sun warming her, she lay down, breathed one last sigh of contentment and closed her eyes for the last time.

If anyone would like to send cards/letters to Newstead and the Firestones the mailing address is: Newstead Farm, P.O. Box 219, Upperville, VA 20185. Emails may be sent through the farm's website at www.newstead.com on the "Contact Us" page.
Also, if anyone is interested in sending a flower arrangement/gift basket, I will look up where last November's gift basket was sent to Genuine Risk from and try to coordinate something.

Thank you for being famblee and letting me ramble.

whap whap whap haha

Was that the wet towel technique? The wet lasagna noodle--just slightly past al dente method??

Or the ever popular whose name shall not be named jockey who hits horses in the face...or the one that flogs them to their deaths on the back stretch. sorry.

Lost control there.

RENEE!!! WHERE IS MY ORANGE JUMPSUIT???

Posted by: jonnagrey at August 19, 2008 9:56 PM

My deep gratitude to all for the prayers and good wishes. Den was just discharged from the hospital. After 3 units of blood, his hemoglobin level was just above the minimum for discharge. I wanted to get home before the weather got any worse. Lotsa, lotsa rain and heavy winds. Amazingly, we still have power. We don't know about the surgery Friday - haven't heard back from the cardiac surgeon.

CJaffe - please don't think your hurt/loss is any less than mine or anyone else. One one FOB hurts - we all do.

Hopefully Fay will fizzle out soon and give Florida a break.

It is a life saver...designed to specially help greyhounders deal with end-of-life issues, illness, chemo issues, amputation issues, homeopathic stuff/...but most MOSTLY: It is a famblee (truly)of people who love their hounds and want to do the right, best thing when their frens needs them most. It's a Yahoo group; easy to join: Just Google it.

SOFIE'S LEE - unlike most of us here, you NEVER ramble...and your "vision" of Genuine Risk's last day on earth was so very similar to mine...she wanted to die outside under blue skies rather than in her stall, and how very blessed she was to be cherished throughout her long life!

Thanks for providing the address ~ I had written a card and was about to search for the address and, as usual, you were three steps ahead.

Posted by: Nancy in CT at August 19, 2008 10:40 PM

Jonna, thank you so much. I have sent it to her and hopefully she will be able to read it through her tears.

You are so wonderful!

You did good.

###whap whap whap--wet noodle, wet blanket, flat of hand on back of bottom, whatever works. The important thing is that is never make more noise than a whisper (a "whap") and it never hurt.

I used to discipline my dogs with a verbal "whap whap whap"--always three and always whispered. My dogs were big (my golden poo, Blossom; two Rott rescues, Benny and Pansy) but they KNEW "whap whap whap." I would even ASK them, when they were thinking about being naughty, if they wanted a "whap" and their "answer" was always no. ;o)

###I sure do miss my doggers.

###Genuine Risk leaving as we all imagine she did: The ultimate gift. No pain, no emergency, no late-night calls to the veterinarian. No injury, no colic. Just a lovely walk around the turnout and then a "lovely lie-down" and awakening Over the Bridge.

A class act, a classy lady to the very end.

Hiya, FsOB! Well, Padme & Roby, you beat me fair & square in the "who'll be first club" today. I almost had a fainting spell around 6 AM, my B/P must've dropped very low. That hadn't happened to me since 1994. I had to turn off the computer and head back upstairs to call into work that I would be late. I did feel better as the day went on & as they say "tomorrow is another day"!

Hoping that all of our FsOB in FLA and their animals are safe tonight! Peace, RMH

#### To Janice, I was relieved to see that Denny was released to come home this evening. Please know that I keep you both in my thoughts. I hope that he is able to get his pacemaker implanted soon.
To CJ: My thoughts are with you. I was sorry to read of Foxy's passing, but am all too familiar with the "you'll know when it's time" experience with beloved pets. Today would have been my late Husky Andrei's 19th birthday. My poor "tiny man", he died of Addison's disease the evening before the KY Derby in May of 1997.
To MJ: I'll go light a candle now for Sarge, I hope that the colic resolved as today progressed.
To Sofie's Lee: I echo Nancy, thank you for the address for Genuine Risk's "people".
To Alex: My sympathies to you and everyone who knew Parker Buckley. What a tragic loss! Take it from an almost 53-year-old, 40 is so young! ####

I'm going to say "good night" FOBs. Remarkably, we still have power. T.S. Fay has stalled right over us and the rain continues. I think we're up to 8 inches so far with no end in sight. When we had the fires in May, I promised that I would never complain about rain, and I won't. But we've received warnings that there is flooding everywhere. It's going to make traveling to work in the morning very interesting. Actually we just got a recorded call from the police dept. advising everyone to stay home if possible, so we'll see what happens.

Thankfully Den is sleeping already - very glad to be home and feeling much better since the transfusion and oxygen. I hope to hear from the cardiac surgeon tomorrow about Friday's procedure.

Thanks again to all. Your support is very comforting and I truly appreciate it. Bless you!!

The August Hay Ride at MHR is underway. Unfortunately there has been a very slow interest in the drive so it will go through September.
THE GREAT WINNERS IN THIS DRIVE ARE THE MHR HORSES WITH YUMMY HAY FOR THEIR TUMMIES AND THE LAMINITIS FUND. In addition to the marvelous Josh Groban CD+DVD Awke Live ther is the Memories of Greatness photo of Barbaro and Secretariat donated by a devoted FOB.

The second prize is a rarely seen photo of our BELOVED BARBARO signed and donated by a fan of MHR Barbara Livingston. THANK YOU MS. LIVINGSTON for your generosity
