Barbaro Updates: 656

Updates are now here

Update 3886: A quiet morning this morning at Woodbine with only six sets. Four of mine went to the gate, which meant I only had two before the break and a long break time waiting for the gate to open. During that time I wandered over to the track kitchen for a coffee, and then to the HBPA Office for some reading. Usual routine. All my horses galloped nice and quietly, and those that gate schooled stood well and quietly in the gate. That's better than one other I observed from another outfit. It literally sat down in the gate, and after doing so for a few minutes they had to open the front doors to get it to get back up. No harm.

Update 3885: The Grade 1 Sword Dancer, run this weekend at Saratoga on the turf has a couple of intriguing runners. Dancing Forever, who's mother underwent similar surgery at New Bolton Center as Barbaro (Time, money well invested) and Red Rocks who most recently defeated Curlin and is now a US resident (Red Rocks settles in for first start with Hennig.)

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

Hiya, FsOB! What exciting news, I've been getting e-mails from Barb M. and it appears that more cosponsors of HR 6598 come on board each day. May everyone have a safe & productive day. If you didn't see the video of La Ville Rouge (which Alex blue-linked yesterday), I strongly encourage it. She'll make your day!

Can I possibly be the first poster today? Let's see....

#### To Barb M.: Glad that Over Enough is back home again! ####

Have a great day everyone... :)

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyKey and the rest of the glorious gang of Heavenly Equines.

On their behalf:

WEDNESDAY/SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR AUGUST 11 – 15TH

Although Congress has now recessed until September 8, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list is posted on the DB and Wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts

As well as calling DC, this is a perfect time to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. On the DB and on the Wiki there is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them. (See Strategy thread)

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!!

Thanks,

Shelley and Deb

I NEED MY JOE TODAY:
***************************************************
Wednesday, August 13th... There were thousands of phone calls about the two police geldings I featured yesterday. Okay maybe not thousands, but at least 70. The two geldings have new homes, and readers of Tbfriends are the best...

If you count (and of course we do) horses adopted directly from feed lots, and if count horses adopted from recent ranch foreclosures, and if you count horses adopted from our dusty 30 acres, then adoptions for 2008 now stand at 375.

Yesterday I told you about a gray gelding from the race track who had been moved to a feed lot near the town of Pittsburgh. His knee is broken, and slaughter in Canada was his future. For 40 cents a pound, or $440.00 dollars plus shipping, the gelding could be saved. And he was. 11 different phone calls from readers of Tbfriends, and yesterday afternoon the gelding goes to his new home with a family in Danville. A fancy joint, with a big screen television in his barn.

Nice well trained horses wait for slaughter at feed lots. Old and skinny horses wait for slaughter at feed lots. Yesterday from the Vallejo feed lot we rescued a tall Trakehner gelding who came with registration papers. Horse killer Brent Sanchez tells us he bought the 10 year old Trakehner from a failing event barn. The gelding was being used as a lesson horse, and Brent Sanchez is asking 60 cents a pound, which comes to $720.00. A teenage reader of Tbfriends gladly came up with the money, and the Trakehner gelding is now living in Davis.

At the very same feed lot in Vallejo, an old white gelding with sore feet and a big knee waits for the slaughter truck. He can hardly walk. Horse killer Brent Sanchez is asking 40 cents a pound, which comes to $280.00. A teenage reader of Tbfriends gladly came up with the money, and now the old white gelding is living in a town called Dunnigan. He is best friends forever with an old white mare who had been lonely. When the old white gelding came off the trailer, the old white mare screamed and went right to him. Off they limped into the sunset. A big Thank You to Stephanie Diaz for providing transportation.

If you would like to rescue a horse from a Northern California feed lot, give me a call at 530-383-2120. All horses are priced by the pound. Tbfriends will help with shipping.

Enjoy your hot 101 degree Wednesday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

GO TO THE SITE AND LOOK AT THE PIX. HIT F5 TO REFRESH THE IMAGE....girls and their horses: sigh.

The New York Daily News reports that a $2500 per head fundraiser for Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue was held with Gwyneth Paltrow as the star attraction. Attendees complained that Paltrow 'snubbed' them because she didn't mingle and rub elbows, stating "It was so rude".

Hay Hamptonites - I believe this was all about the horses. Not you.

Where are the Black Farmers...NBFA ???????

Has anyone contacted them???

Posted by: Maribel at August 13, 2008 5:23 PM

Hi Maribel

Hope you and Hans are well today

have been doing some research. NBFA is organizing. Dr Boyd is spending a lot of time (like at the recent hearing) getting these bills passed. at the moment, I don't believe there is an actual resource, meaning somewhere to call to find a home or homes. AT THIS MOMENT. not saying it's not going to happen, it will, but the organization is being put into place. I have been told that the AWI is actually the point of contact at this time, but long term, the resources will be established at some point in the future to have the NBFA work with rescues on a regional basis, to find homes for horses who need them, when other options are closed. It's a big project. the first goal is getting the bills passed. if anyone associated with NBFA intervenes in the process and can offer homes, so much the better, but the objective long term is to be a safety net. don't think it's quite "there" yet.

******* BIRTHDAY ALERT ***********

Hay, FOBs,

I just checked with Alie at KF and she has received only 3 contributions for Dr. Richardson's birthday basket. Yes, that's right, 3. I know it is the dog days of summer and money is tight, but we can do better I'm sure. Any small amount will be greatly appreciated.

DEADLINE for contributions to KF is August 26th, less than two weeks from today. DEADLINE for donations to the Laminitis Fund is August 28th. For those sending by snail mail, please do so ASAP.

This has become an FOB tradition. Please take time today and send a little something for Barbaro's buddy. He is second only to Barbaro in our hearts.

Please pass this on to those who may not always come here.

Thanks, everyone.

###Donna W from 2:56 on 13 August - you asked about an alternative to an e collar for your dog. There are instructions for making your own out of various plastic or cardboard sources at this site: http://www.petalert.com.au/faid/faa5.php
Or, you could try a softcollar made of: - a large towel, rolled up like some kind of thick sausage; - one leg of an old pair of jeans or pants and - a string. Stuff the rolled up towel (long enough to fit just around the neck) into the pants leg, connect the two ends of it with strong string and put it around the dog's neck.
To prevent the softcollar from being pawed off, you can attach it to a harness. It's worth a try to help your pup heal!

August 13 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Grief is one of the most tenacious and persistent emotions of all our feelings. Putting it aside is a temporary act at most, because it waits and moves at subtle times and when we least expect it.

This deceptive pain can spring from times and times ago---things that have been dealt with and put to rest. But grief is a spirit and loves to spring up as guilt questioning about what if we had done differently.

We have a right to happiness, without grief. The fact that we can scold it and have it leave should show us that we can be free, even though it takes a time or two to overturn its invitation to hurt.

With the economy in the dumper and all the horses needing rescue, we realize that we can't expect huge donations for this cause...however, if everyone does just a little, we will have a lot!

Nancy in CT, Andre sends his love to you. I just found out he will be with us for almost another year. You need to come and visit.

My precious Hans wrapped his head around me the other day. The next thing I knew the handsome one put his head on my chest and went to sleep for a good half hour. Every now and then he would nuzzle look at me and go back to sleep. The world went away and the time I had him close to my heart was so important. I love him so much. He is a goal for me.

He is an old man but a spunky sweet one, who is going to be adopted by a great family.

I'm doing well, still looking for a job, yuck! Mom is well but has her so so days to, Cheyenne is doing very well.

Renee, I live in Tolland, Ct. and have been a long time FOB. Is your rescue somewhere in this vicinity that I could visit? Looked at the site, but could not find a location. My daughter lives in Longmeadow. TIA

Hay, FOB's...

###
Prayers for Tiny Tim who crossed the Bridge about an hour ago...RIP Sweet-heart of mine...your light shines for ever...K just looked out the patio and there is a rainbow on one side of the sun...thank you for letting us know you are OK...

###
Have signed the petition for Melody's owner to be investigated for what he did to her...the word outrage doesn't begin to describe how I feel about this situation. I am #198...please sign this in memory of a brave ladyhorse who raced for her life and was rescued in time to have a gentle, loving transition...

###
I am onto something...won another $1.00 in the lottery tonight. I am very grateful...so it could be time to pray to the lottery gods...

Hiya, FsOB! Joe Shelton and everyone affiliated with TB Friends renew my faith in humanity. I almost started crying when I read about the rescued white gelding being greeted with glee by the old white mare. All is not lost in our world when young people who might otherwise spend their money frivolously help save horses instead. Wishing each of you "ACN". Peace, RMH

#### To Jonna: I am so sorry that the migraine has returned (or maybe it has lasted for more than a day?). When I used to get them, the only good thing about the pattern was that if I were to get one, it would come on the 2nd day of my cycle and it would be gone by the next day. But they were truly ghastly, complete with N & V, severe photophobia, dizziness, etc. My first Husky, Natasha, was the only creature whom I wanted around me. She was so gentle and would lick the tears off my face.
To Deborah Anderson, Nancy in CT, and everyone working on Dr. Richardson's birthday evening: On Friday, I'll mail a birthday card for "Dr. Dean" to the attention of Kennett Square. I shall also make a very modest (can't afford more, unfortunately) donation to UPENN's Laminitis Research Fund. The folks there are awesome! ####

### Robyn,

Thank you. It is much appreciated.

Tiny Tim,
How many more times can our hearts be broken? You had the most beautiful face in the world. Be happy in heaven.

JAN, DEBORAH ANDERSON & NANCY in CT:
Early this week I dropped by the post office and mailed my check (contribution) to Kennett Florist for Dr. Richardson's birthday. I had marked the envelope to the attention of Alie & Rach. Hopefully it arrived today, 8/13, or maybe tomorrow . . .
In May I sent a contribution in honour of Dr. Richardson to UPENN's The Friends of New Bolton Center.

Love to all,
Lou Ann

Awww Dee Mirich,

I just dropped in for a quick moment while taking a break on creating a fundraiser item for the WindChill Bar-B-Que this weekend and I saw your beautifully amazing post...

While reading the words and soaking in the soothing emotion, imagine my surprise and delight to read my Angel's name on the screen! Oh, the feeling...!

Thank you Angel Dee! As I was reading and read over her name, it was like a soft whisper from beside me. There are no words for the comfort that that moment gave me. That YOU gave me...

Thank you my friend. I am grateful to you...for you.

Much love xxoo

What a day... If an old white mare can greet an old white gelding, and they limp off into the sunset together, anything is possible!

(((Joe Shelton)))

What a wonderful world!
