Barbaro Updates: 655

updates are now here.

Update 3884: An update on Lentenor and La Ville Rouge, at Mill Ridge Farm in Kentucky: A Visit with La Ville Rouge and Lentenor.

Update 3883: Eight Belles will be memorialized in a ceremony Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. in the Kentucky Derby Museum's gardens: Eight Belles honored at Derby Museum.

Update 3882: And the winner of the OTTB of the Week contest is Carson City Kid.

From Keeneland to Fargo ND, his career was well traveled!

Update 3881: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

Although not directly related to the Arlington Million, a highlight of the broadcast from my perspective was last week's Claiborne Farm Foal Patrol segment. Featured was über-broodmare Hasili, who was relocated from England to the US last year, with her most recent Empire Maker foal (she also has a 2006 Empire Maker filly). It's an interesting move, since Juddmonte Farms realizes that her appeal is largely European, describing her as:

"...not the American commercial type with a blocky body and a big hip," O'Rourke said. "She is tall and somewhat narrow with not much hip, yet her progeny have the big hips, apparently from Danehill."
Although it's not directly spelled out, it sounds as though she came to the States as a 'last chance' to have a 2007 foal (which turned out to be her Storm Cat yearling) after she did not get in foal to Oasis Dream back in Britain. In any case, she looked tremendous in the video footage, as did the foal (even though I've never been a fan of Empire Maker, despite his regal breeding) -- it's nice to have her here.

Other famous mares are keeping busy as well; Makybe Diva's first foal, her colt by Galileo, will be sent to auction next spring and her Fusaichi Pegasus foal is due next month. She's got a date planned with Encosta De Lago (her original suitor for last year, although equine influenza prevented their meeting) shortly thereafter. She's also busy with her new range of merchandise.

Better Than Honour, dam of Jazil, Rags to Riches and Casino Drive will also be on the block herself in the near future -- come November, you too could own a champion broodmare (if you have a few million lying around), although she's not in foal right now, so there's no special extra bonus if you buy now. I'd be curious to see what she would produce were she to be bred to Monsun or another strictly European stallion, although I would wager she will be back in the Coolmore fold and will be spending quality time with the likes of Haradasun or perhaps even the aforementioned Encosta De Lago. Time will tell...

Update 3880: A simply gorgeous morning this morning at Woodbine. I had eight sets, five before the break and three after the break. One of our riders had the day off, so some of the horses I rode were not my usual horses, but it is nice to ride one or two different ones from time to time. All my horses went nicely to make for a straightforward morning.

Update 3879: Curlin, and other top runners from Steve's barn at Saratoga, worked on Monday: Asmussen Stars Work at Oklahoma Track.

Don't forget to vote for your favorite OTTB. It does look like a leader is emerging. Voting ends at noon today.

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

We love you!!!!!

Good Morning Family/Fans of Barbaro

PLEASE CALL, FAX, EMAIL....Congress is on vacation....but the killer buyers are never on break....their blood money is on their hands...slaughtering beautiful horses...sending them to a brutal slaughter...please...this has to stop.

Please also remember and help our rescues, our Fallen Angels, the ones suffering human or animal, our wildlife and always our loving family.

Have a nice day.

Good Morning Alex....and thank you.

Hiya, FsOB! The skies overhead are threatening, despite our having had another evening filled with lightening & thunder. Nikita was on the rug in the bathroom this AM; I think she considers that a safe zone during storms. May each of you have a safe & productive day!

#### To Janice: I lit some candles for Kaiser on Gratefulness yesterday. I gave Kita some extra attention last night because Kaiser's passing reminded me again how lucky we are to have been blessed with Nikita.
To Nancy: Please ask the storm clouds to head north, OK?
To Sandra: Would Chief consider some booties? They might help him raise himself up when he is recumbent on the tile floor.
To Laurie H.: What a sweet posting last night about your beloved Kola. Our pets never leave our hearts, do they?
Thank you, Angel Dee! ####

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyKey and the rest of the charming gang in Equine Heaven.

On their behalf:

TUESDAY/SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR AUGUST 11 – 15TH

Although Congress has now recessed until September 8, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list is posted on the DB and Wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts

As well as calling DC, this is a perfect time to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. On the DB and on the Wiki there is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them. (See Strategy thread)

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!!

Thanks,

Shelley and Deb

It's Tuesday FOBs

I hope you don't get sick of hearing how much Den and I appreciate your kind thoughts about Kaiser and of course us. Kaiser is fine now - we are the problem. Den asked yesterday when it was going to get easier. I said I didn't have a clue. I don't know if I ever mentioned before that because of Den's brain injury he is unable to drive so of course Kaiser was his constant companion during the day while I am at work. At least I have work to go to, Den is having to go through the day without his best friend in the house. Anyway - we met with the cardiac surgeon yesterday and they are going to call me today with a date for him to have the defibrillator/pacemaker implant and that will probably be a good thing for him. Something to think about and maybe even worry about and crazy as it sounds - that might be a blessing.

OK - back to horse issues. I do hope and pray that we can pressure Congress into doing the right thing for our horses when they return from vacation.

We need earthly angels to rescue a few horses at the New Jersey lot...please help if you can.

Posted by: joan roya at August 12, 2008 2:33 PM

Repost from yesterday - hoping someone can help. Stealth has some options now. Jasper is still in real need of a home offer.

Cheryl Jones has posted regarding the two geldings in Colorado, Jasper and Stealth.

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages/?msg=27356.1

The owners want these horses gone - they don't care how. They told the ranch manager this a few weeks ago. The ranch manager is the one trying to find these horses (there were 8) a home - the owners decided they didn't find the dude ranch thing "interesting" anymore. The manager will not send them to auction. Jasper and Stealth are the horses left that don't have a home.

Jasper is being put down in a few days. He has a sore shoulder...... the owners won't spend anymore money on him - and the manager has not been able to find him a pasture pet home.

If anyone can help Jasper, now would be the time to step up.

This only calling our constituents is making me growl. I think just for the heluvit I will call as many NY peeps as I can muster....

Still trying to get an appointment in Syracuse with Walsh. More growling.

It MIGHT NOT RAIN today: I ain't bettin' on it though. But my fosterdogs have no concept of housebreaking...the male like to pee his nasty track pee on the little deck. This makes me SO VERY happy...

Anyhow. If we are REALLY LUCKY and we have no "pop-up showers" (what the hell is THAT new little meteorologic phrase???????)I will be able to get most/all of these big comforters washed and festooning anything that does not move in the backyard.....

The Olympics last night was just fabulous. The gymnastics team: a team of unknowns and alternates with both BOTH Homm brothers out of the action took bronze and came oh, so close to taking silver...it was just plain old up-damned-lifting.
Those guys were just AWESOME>

Good Morning Gang.

Two years ago at this time Barbaro was being hand grazed by Dr. R., and the girls were running to get the fly repellent spray bottles. How these images are forever in our minds and hearts. Every horse is beautiful. Every single one. Big B. was here to get our attention.

And I hope his next sibling is a baby girl.

Jonna, I don't know who the person is that is blogging about the Olympics, but 'blonde champagne' is very, very funny. The housecoats with red velvet cake emesis is hysterical. I will check that site every AM for a jolly start to the day.

Eight Belles to be interred Sept. 7 in Kentucky
30 minutes ago

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Derby Museum has set a date to memorialize Eight Belles. The popular filly will be interred at the museum in Louisville on Sept. 7.

Eight Belles suffered two broken ankles after finishing second to Big Brown in the 134th Kentucky Derby on May 3. She was euthanized on the track.

Eight Belles' owner, Rick Porter, will unveil a plaque honoring the champion filly during the public ceremony. The plaque will be mounted under a magnolia tree where the filly's remains will be interred.

August 12 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

In this age of free thinkers, many a business and political genius has asked, "Who can I join hands with that will do me the most good?"

Almost any aggressive person can get his feet on the ladder of success. It is keeping them there that gets into artfulness. Because there is a time to think and act independently, a person's footing may get very shaky and very temporary.

A law of cause and effect works minute by minute, and that simply says we get only when we give and reap only what we sow. No one else can do for us what we have to do for ourselves. And no one else can keep us sharp and honest and respectful. It is our job.

Once I moved about like the wind. Now I surrender to you and that is all.

Nothing like Starting the Day with Good News!

Heard from Deb & Shelley this morning, that in addition to the 24 cosponsors for HR 6598 reflected on the Thomas.gov site, there are an additional SIX MORE for a total of 30. (These 6 have committed to cosponsor, but the official paperwork will not go through until after the Congressional Recess is over.) (We heard about Rep Cohen of TN last week, and the rest are news to me.) These Reps are committed to cosponsor HR 6598 and they will be reflected as cosponsors via Thomas.com after Congress resumes after the current recess.

1. Steve Cohen –– TN
2. Peter King –– NY
3. Mark Steven Kirk –– IL
4. Charles A. Gonzalez –– TX
5. Bill Young –– FL
6. Wayne Gilchrest –– MD

(btw - ALL the 30 cosponsors of HR 6598 thus far - the 24 shown on thomas.gov and the 6 listed above as committed to cosponsoro - are cosponsors of HR 503 . . .)

Robyn, the little booties are a good idea for Chief. However, he would remove them in a few seconds. ha. The vet said along with his stroke after effects he has devolped some heart problems. He is not on a diet anymore. He wants a nilla wafer he gets a nilla wafer. The boy is soon to be 13 and has serious health problems. I try to limit it some but basically what he wants is what he gets within reason. ###I will wonder if Eight Belles would have beaten Big Brown in the Derby. She was 2nd. How beautiul she was and what a tragic loss.

Hi Everyone,
I hope you all had a good weekend.
Our Fundraiser went very ell and we are planning another one. We are full to capacity, hopefully we can get a few adoption's to make room for more horses. We always need help now that we are bigger. We have a horse at the rescue that looks like Barbaro, Teddy has beautiful eyes and is a large dark bay. I will try to get a picture and post it.

I was just looking at Lentenor and La Ville Rouge, they are so beautiful and Barbaro can be seen in both. I think he looks just like his mom, and has her beautiful gentle face and eyes.

Hay Big Boy in heaven I love you very much and miss you.

MJ all the colt's have the sweet face of there mother, when I got to see Lentenor this past July Mike Bell told me, Nicanor was fun and playful but Lentenor was more seriousness but sweet. Both are beautiful and Sereno will be also. How would you say the name Serino? I know the Jackson’s had wished for a filly, but a healthy and happy colt will do!
When I got to Three Chimneys Mr.Dinaformer looks better in person than in his pictures. But he is not has hansom as our Barbaro.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at August 13, 2008 2:11 AM

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, thanks very much for the blue link to the video showing La Ville Rouge. She is a lovely mare (and I'd say that even if she weren't Barbaro, Nicanor, & Lentenor's mum!). And thanks, too, for the announcement about the ceremony that will be held at Churchill Downs to honour Eight Belles. My friend ML was in the barn area on Derby Day. She said that Eight Belles held herself like a champion coming out that day. Apparently, Eight Belles loved adoring fans as much as Barbaro did.

#### To Janice: I hope that the defib placement is helpful for Denny. If he has to stay as an inpatient for a day or two, you might ask if the hospital has "therapy dogs" to visit the patients who are animal lovers. When I worked at Saint Raphael's in New Haven several dogs "worked" there, too. The dogs were a particular hit with the kids and with the senior citizens (some of whom were anticipating lengthy stays). There was one Newfoundland, whom I can still visualize, wearing his bright blue vest, trotting up the central cooridor towards the elevators. I swear that he was twice as wide as I am. Please know that I hold you both in my heart at this difficult time, Janice.
To Sandra: I totally understand, Chief has earned the good life! He is so lucky to have you as his Mum.
To Lorraine on Staten Island: What a relief that Cobra Strike didn't suffer any injuries on Saturday. Thanks for updating us! ####

Hi All,

Thanks Alex for the link to Lentenor and La Ville Rouge.

Now, for my problem: I need some advice from those of you with lots of pet experience. My lab, Abby is recovering from achilles tendon surgery and I (and the vet) think she has developed a sensitivity to her plastic e-collar. She is in an extension splint and must wear the e-collar for part of the day. When the collar is off she rubs her face excessively and her chin, lips and eyes are swollen and irritated. Vet has seen her and prescribed antibiotics ( diagnosis=pyoderma) and benadryl for the itching. Does anyone have an alternative solution for the plastic e-collar. She will have to be in the splint for at least another 4 weeks. I have ordered a soft collar online and await delivery. But, not sure that is going to work...and frankly I am desparate for any ideas. She really needs to have some sort of e collar at night when we sleep as she will lick and chew on the splint if left unattended. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

STRATEGY FOR AUGUST 11-15

Although Congress has now recessed until September 8, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list is attached with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents.

Below is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them.

Thanks,

AMERICANS AGAINST HORSE SLAUGHTER

Over Enough has gotten his way and is home, he was at a temporary lay-up barn and hated it, was in danger of ruining his surgically repaired elbow so we took him home to his outside paddock and he is very quiet and happy with his old buddy. I have hired someone to take care of him while we are in Saratoga. Leaving tomorrow for Saratoga, Nala is going with us, graciously Susan from Saratoga has offered for Nala to stay at her house so we can go to the track. Looking forward to the Travers and seeing Dancing Forever and Better Talk Now this weekend. Thanks to everyone for your continued prayers for Over and Nala.

Praying for my friend Janice to receive comfort.

Great news about new co-sponsors, let's keep it going and stop the slaughter for good.
