    Barbaro Updates: 653

    updates are now here.

Update 3866: Wild weather cancelled Saratoga today: Weather Forces Spa to Cancel 8 Races.

Update 3865: It is nice to see not all farming interests are pro-horse slaughter, as some would try to portray: Farming leader makes stand against horse slaughter, excerpt:

"When learning about the issue, people advocating horse slaughter kept saying horse slaughter is an important industry to farmers and horse owners. I had to take a stand and tell Congress this was just not true," Dr Boyd said.

"The industry exists out of greed and those advocating horse slaughter could care less about horse welfare."

    Found on Paulick Report.

Update 3864: Today, the discussion board is two years old. Here is the second post posted on August 8, 2006: Welcome to Tim Woolley Racing.

Thank you Prospero for all your support.

Update 3863: A busier morning this morning at Woodbine with eight sets. Five before the break and three after the break. It was a very damp morning, with plenty of rain and thankfully no humidity. All the horses I rode went nicely. Two went to the gate for a little schooling. On my way out I stopped by the track kitchen for a decent breakfast. I ate and chatted with Laura, who is originally from Lithuania, and is a freelance exercise rider here. Fun actually sitting down and chatting with someone you see every morning and simply exchange hellos.

Update 3862: It is Arlington Park's big weekend this weekend. Aside from the Arlington Million, they have the Secretariat Stakes and the Beverly D, both also Grade 1 events. The Jackson's are represented: Trio of prominent turf runners to meet in Beverly D.

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

    Need I say more?
This is usually our only fundraiser during the year that joins the whole FOB-nation in the fight against laminitis.
Let's get this done for Barbaro!

Good Morning Baby B...cannot believe it has been 2 years since all of this began. I am not here all the time, but my heart & mind are always with Barbaro, all the horses and FOB's that I am proud to one of.

I love you Barbaro - forever.

I have said this before, but will say it again --Thank you Alex for continuing to be here for us & to make this all possible. We are forever grateful & honored to be with you.

I hope you all have a wonderful day & weekend.

PLEASE LIGHT UP CANDLES FOR BARBARO AND HIS FRENS....HIS CANDLES ARE VERY, VERY LOW...PLEASE

Posted by: joan roya at August 8, 2008 1:46 PM

###Absolutely agree with you, Debbie of Carrollton, a BIG thank-you to Alex for all he has done for us. We wouldn't be in this place if it weren't for his graciousness and willingness to put up with us ;o)

###Safe day to all, hugs and prayers to those in need. It's Friday (thank you!!) and we're having another heat spell here (but I'm working daily and using someone else's air conditioning ;o) My system ran off and on all night long and I had the thermostat up to 80 so you know it was a hot day yesterday.

###Good work all. We each have a right to be very proud of our efforts in whatever facet of doing things for Barbaro's name that has piqued our interest. Even if we run into brick walls (in the form of others who cannot do THEIR part--CONGRESS, ARE YOU LISTENING??), we can be justifiably proud of having done our part.

There will be about 20 FOB's in attendance at Arlington this Saturday. This is our 2nd get together.

We are so EXCITED because here in the midwest our chances of seeing a Lael Stables horse run is so small. However, we get to see one now as Precious Kitten runs in the Beverly D.

It should be a great race as my fav, Dreaming of Anna is also entered along with a horse from Graham Motions barn. We will have pics for everyone.

why do i persist in drinking this TERRIBLE cup o joe? I forget to get my regular beans yesterday...and this is ground french roast, which--if i were sitting on a little green metal chair at a little green table struggling through the latest edition of Paris Match, in the cool breezes generated by moving up the Seine--this damned coffee would probably taste just damned fine.

    JOE, PART UN:
    ***************************************************
Friday, August 8th... Out of bed early. So early a lady is still selling fake jewelry on Channel 182. Cold and dark outside. I must rush to feed 108 horses on our ranch. Then I go to a farm in Elverta to help load six unwilling horses into a large stock trailer. The six horses are a wee bit wild. Two of the six have seldom been touched. We do the shrinking pen load. Remove one panel at a time until the round pen is so small the horse gladly walks into the trailer. The six horses will be transported to a fancy ranch near Pleasanton, where our new best friend Jordan works. Jordan loves to halter break wild horses, and she is doing these six for free. We only have to buy hay and grain. When the six are polished and sensible they will be available for adoption. All six are owned by Tbfriends. This group includes a stunning dark bay filly with 4 white socks. She is a warmblood, two years old, and already 16.1 hands high. On Monday it took more than an hour to get a halter on her. I named this filly Tampa, because Tampa Bay is in first place in their division. My Boston Red Sox are in second place, but now we are getting into a whole new subject, and what happened to writing about horses? Peets coffee has yet to kick in. John Denver sings on the oldies station...

    more to come...

###Dee, I thought of you and your beautiful poems of rainbows. I also said a prayer for Janice's Kaiser, for Harriette's mother-in-law and all the FOB's that peace will come to them today as I experienced this delightful display by Mother Nature.

Happy to help SOSequines in any way, they are raising ransom for two horses...and there is a 3 pm deadline.

Pictures are at this address on the DB: 27236.76. Here is their QT etc and other policies:

"SOS Is located in Kennewick and has it's own QT policy. If you live in Washington state and have the facilities, you can do your own QT. It's explained in the "About" section under "adoption procedures" on www.sosequines.org."

Please help these beautiful girls...they may need more money because of transportation costs, which are killing so many rescue groups these days...

Guys: They need us: No one else can help them....go to the DB and check them out at the selection number I placed up top. Many things are included in their remaining needed amount for nearly $1,000.

Let's get them home in honor of the second anniversary of the ABR.

Please. Every amount helps...I don't think people listen to this, and then I see an accounting of donations and time ands again, there are $54 donations. There are $8 donations....

We all must do only what we can do, and not strap our finances...If not us, then who?

    No horse left Behind.

My heartfelt gratitude to all FOBs for your wonderful, compassionate messages. We truly appreciate your prayers and good thoughts. I don't know what it will take or how long to climb out of this pit of depression and despair but can only survive moment by moment. When I saw Kaiser's name on Equine Heaven last night, I almost fell to the floor. That reinforced the reality. But when I thought about it a little later, it made me smile to know he is in such good company.

I would love to wake up and find this all to be a nightmare. I know you've all been there and understand. We knew, as all pet owners do, we would have to let Kaiser go someday. I just didn't think it would be yet. He was our child.

We've both agreed that because of Denny's ongoing health problems, we are not going to get another. It wouldn't replace him anyway.

Thank you all for being there. I've always said that FOBs are the greatest.

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyKey, and the rest of the gang in Equine Heaven.

    On their behalf...

    MORNING POST/SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR AUGUST 4TH TO 8TH

Congress has now recessed until September 8. However, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list will be posted on the DB and Wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts

As well as calling DC, this is a perfect time to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. Below is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them.

    http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/legislation/110_equinecruelty_hr6598.pdf

Remember, the first list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to just let them know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!!

    Thanks,

    Shelley and Deb

    JOE PART DEUX:
    ****************************************************
Now most folks I know do something fun on their 21st birthday. Maybe Vegas, maybe Tahoe. For sure a dinner celebration with friends. On her 21st birthday Jordan drove to our ranch. I had already heard about this girl in Pleasanton, and how she is magic with wild horses. And now here she was, in my driveway, saying she would like to do something nice for Tbfriends. I said okay, perhaps someday I will send her an untouched horse or two, and she can get them manageable. (is manageable a word? and what is taking so long with the Peets?)

Jordan looks like she is 12 so I had to ask, how old are you, and she said today I turned 21. And of course I had to say on your 21st birthday you come to Woodland? And she says horses are her life, and when horses are your life there are no days off. However that night she was having dinner with her boyfriend in San Francisco, and then they were going for a moonlight ferry ride under the Golden Gate bridge.

That was two months ago. I sent Jordan a nutty young colt from a feed lot in Turlock. The nutty young colt is now a sane young gelding. He leads, picks up his feet, and has gained more than 140 pounds. Jordan has a new home for him at another fancy ranch. She did all of this for free. She did all of this for Tbfriends.

And now we send her six more. Wild untouched horses who will be given an oppportunity to live a quality life.

On the phone I tell Jordan thank you. Jordan says no thanks needed. She is blessed to help horses. All her life horses have helped her, and she only wants to give back.

And then in the mail comes a $50.00 gift card for Chevron gasoline. With a note from Jordan, who says give this card to your horse hauler. She wants to pay for the gas to bring those six horses to her fancy ranch.

In the same envelope was a $10.00 gift card to Starbucks. The note from Jordan said treat yourself Joe.

Enjoy your 8-8-08 Friday, and be sure to hug your horses. No time for loading new pictures, sorry. Gotta go feed now. Talk about being blessed. Time for a new day with horses.

    Joe

Happy Anniversary, ABR and thanks to TWR for building the foundation for ABR, and thank you especially to Alex for this site and all that you do.

0080808 The Chinese believe that eight is the best number, and the opening on this date was the result of careful planning, with the opening ceremonies occuring at 8:00PM local time. There is so much belief and tradition connected to numbers in Chinese culture, it's kind of eerie in a way, that an American horse would wear that number on a day that changed history forever. Wish I could see into the future, but despite the fact that I can't, I believe that the planets and stars aligned for a reason that day, and that we've only begun to see the amazing results. Even though there may be bumps in the road ahead, we'll get over them or around them, and make it happen, as they say.

    ##

    Jan,

During those moments that are sure to come, as they are now, just close your eyes and feel all of us around you, holding you close, crying with you, holding you up. You absolutely are not going through this alone. We are here. We share your pain.

We also know that Kaiser is aware of how much you love him, he had the best home and furparents. He's no longer in pain, he's healthy. And, he is very busy today, running and romping with so many FOB furbabies, laying on grass so green and full, like nothing on earth. Water so clear to refresh him. Birds, butterflys, all sorts of wonderful beings up there with him. It's so beautiful where he is right now Jan. And, I suspect Barbaro has bent down and nuzzled his sweet head as a welcome. He'll watch over Kaiser until you and Denny are reunited with him, and you will be.

He's waiting for you. Until then, feel him close, he's ALWAYS in your heart, he's part of you.

I always used to tell Sam he was my heartbeat, that was my nickname for him. Then when he died I thought I'd go too. I didn't want to be here without him. But then it hit me one day that my nickname for him meant something more than just a name. He was (and still is) my heartbeat. The same is for all of us, they're all our heartbeats, always part of us.

wow, girl: amen to all that. You're right. The wheels are turning. And the turn ever so slowly at first. But we are MAKING CHANGE HAPPEN. And that be a tough old nut to crack.

I salute all of us, all of you/
(And I must admit, I do look quite fetching in my VetWrap Chapeau. But I am getting that itch to go REDDER in the cheveux department....)

Like who sees it but me and the dogs, right> and then do not care if you want to make your hair really, really red. (I got into this because of too many trips to Germany, where the Germans prefer hair colors that are not found in the natural world, cough cough....)

Think of Cheetos. Think of Carmel Corn. Think of KoolAid.

Ah: must bundle uyp with many dogs and respect the 60 SIXTY degree temp out today. I do prefer it to the 90+ crap, believe me. And there is something so loving about a big ole turtle neck sweater.

We can share stories here of our loved ones that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge, can't we? I would love to hear stories of our fur children, and I think it would help us in our grief. So if you feel the need, please go ahead.

I consider FOB fur children my children as well. We are all aunties and uncles here.

I saw the piece on Jill Rappaport's dog yesterday. I think she is another who gets it.

Lots of weddings going on in China today due to the auspicious number 8.

And the rattlers are out in force today. They are on the move, signaling the waning days of monsoon season. Picking up a load of water and transporting it into the wilds was dangerous. But I prayed a lot. On the road home, I came across a smaller one making his/her way to the other side. I pulled in front of him/her and blocked any stray cars coming along until he/she was safely off the road. This may sound stupid, but maybe I saved one life today, as scary as that life can be at times. Abandoned at birth to fend for themselves, I do have a soft spot for the snakes. And they do have their 'jobs' here on earth.

I remain, unapologetically and shamelessly, crazy.

I wish all a peaceful and loving day.

    Hi Margin NM
You arent crazy. I also try to help keep the rattlesnakes safe from harm. Family and friends think I am nutso, but I am not going to kill something just because I could. I am deathly afraid of snakes. I once carried a criket down 3 flights of stairs to put him outside by a bush.
I guess I really am nuts.
    Have a great day.

Aug 8 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Life is complicated, no doubt about it. We start something and it leads us into something else- and that in to another thing and we ask, "How did this happen?"

On the other hand, we wouldn't like it any better if we were confined to a treadmill that goes and goes but gets nowhere. It is life lived at a time when order as we once knew it, is nonexistent.

It helps to go back to where we started and take each bend and turn and change things--even if we have to admit we were wrong and ask someone to forgive us. All is not lost, and it helps to admit we made moves that were wrong. And even against our most selfish nature---begin to make them right.

Do not wrong or hate your neighbor, for it is not he that you wrong; You wrong yourself.

Margie, I don't think it's crazy at all. I love snakes, even the rattlers, and have a tremendous respect for the other venomous ones. They are all beautiful and do indeed have an important role in the universe.

you made me think of my dad calling me one day, very frantic. It was before I moved here but was contemplating marriage to my DH, and my dad knew that he had an 'inside' to a vet. He was driving home through the canyon that separated their home from the ocean, where he and my mom liked to visit almost daily, and saw something in the road, but couldn't avoid. It was a young rattler. He was so distraught. He called me to ask me to consult my soon-to-be DH if there was anything he could do to try to save the snake. It was kind of comical, in a way, but so VERY sweet, as I visualized him trying to do CPR on a rattlesnake. If you knew my dad, you'd know this would not have been out of the realm of possibility. Anyway, after convincing him the snake couldn't be resurrected, he and my mom took it home, placed in in a box lined with a soft towel, and gave it a proper burial in their yard. That was SO my dad. so I certainly wouldn't think anything different of anyone else who would save a snake, as being a very loving and compassionate human. There aren't nearly enough like you.

btw, only meant to let Jan know about Jill Rappaport's site to let her know about another resource to share grief, not to discourage her or anyone else to talk about losing a furchild

Years go I lost a beloved old Lab. My vet gave me the following. Maybe it will give some comfort. ###If the dog be well remembered, if sometimes he leaps through your dreams actual as if in life, eyes bright, laughing, it matters not where that dog sleeps. There is one best place to bury a dog. If you bury him in this spot , he will come to you when you call-come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well remembered path and to your side again. People may scoff at you, who see no slightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper , people who have never had a dog. Smile at them, for you know something that hidden from them. The one best place to bury a dog is in the heart of his master. Ben Hur Lampman

Someone sent this to me when I lost my beloved Blossom a year ago last June. I hope no one objects to my including this today.

    A Dog For Jesus
I wish someone had given Jesus a dog
As loyal and loving as mine
To sleep by His manger and gaze in His eyes
And adore Him for being divine.
As our Lord grew to manhood His faithful dog
Would have followed Him all through the day
While He preached to the crowds and made the sick well
And knelt in the garden to pray.
It is sad to remember that Christ went away
To face death alone and apart
With no tender dog following close behind
    To comfort its Master's Heart.
And when Jesus rose on that Easter morn
How happy He would have been
As His dog kissed His hands and barked its delight
For The One who died for all men.
Well, the Lord has a dog now, I just sent Him mine
The old pal so dear to me
And I smile through my tears on this first day alone
    Knowing they're in eternity.
Day after day, the whole day through
    Wherever my road inclined
Four feet said, "I am coming with you!"
    And trotted along behind.

Hi, Hugs, and Comfort to all here . . . .

In all my letter-writing and such on behalf of our beloved equines I have often included their major contributions in the heritage of this country...I just was introduced to another aspect of that contribution and thought it would be a good point to share here.

I'm reading a book titled "The Lightkeepers' Menagerie - Stories of Animals at Lighthouses", by Elinor De Wire, Published by Pineapple Press, Sarasota, Florida, 2007.
Much to my surprise and joy, the third chapter is entitled "Hoofprints in the Sand", and Ms. De Wire begins with these words: "Horses, mules, donkeys, and oxen -- their hoof prints are indelibly inscribed on the pages of lighthouse history. No other animals were so useful or critical to the establishment and operation of light stations."
Many a horse, donkey and mule were not only workers but were considered members of the families at the light stations.

The book also contains chapters dedicated to canines, felines, and a multitude of other four-legged, feathered and finned companions who faithfully served or provided companionship to lightkeepers.
There are chuckles, tears, and many interesting tidbits through the pages.

I happened on to the book sheerly by chance while perusing the shelves at our Borders Books.
The moment I started to read it I could not help but think of you all here!!
And if by chance you also love lighthouses, well it's an extra treat!

As always . . . . holding hands, paws, hooves with the entire Barbaro Nation.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd as you know you take me to where angels walk . . . as Angel Dee says "It is Affirmed" !

It has been a very long week . . . . and my sincere condolences, hugs, prayers and love to those of you who are mourning the loss of someone very special in your life. . .

    with love,
    Lou Ann

After my coffee, I'm going to have a small glass or 2 of Zin.

Posted by: MargieinNM at August 9, 2008 12:13 AM

    Hay Famblee,
It's been a rough, tough, tear filled week. Like many of you, I've shed tears; tears of pain empathizing with my Famblee who's lost loved ones, furred and not so furry and I've cried with joy at the love and compassion this Famblee has for each other.

It's been a bit frustrating too. Congress not getting the work done we want them to. There's been a lot of frustration at the "industry" just talking about fixing things and making the Horses safer. Well, here's some good news.

TOBA, through it's American Graded Stakes Committee has declared that unless the state and/or track adopt the model rules for anabolic steroid testing and toe grabs and adopt drug testing for a "milkshake" (not sure what it is but it's not good I think) then the state's and/or track's graded stakes races will LOSE their graded status! The races will NOT be considered for grading again until the rules are adopted! (From Bloodhorse.com article http://news.bloodhorse.com/article/46517.htm)

Finally! Some credible, strong ACTION being taken. It's a step in the right direction. We have been working so hard to make things better and safer for the Horses.

As you enjoy this "getting closer to the end of summer" weekend, pat yourselves on the back. You have helped make life better for the Horses.

NO Horse left behind or Ever Forgotten!
