    Barbaro Updates: 650

    updates are now here.

Update 3852: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

Mark your calendars for August 30th - Curlin will be heading back to dirt for the Woodward although owner Jess Jackson indicated that turf is still an option down the line:

"The Arc is probably out for this year," Jackson said. "We think he can be a turf champion but I'm not sure he has enough time this year to make the adjustment," Jackson said. "The flexibility of his racing style and the tactics he'd have to use (on the turf) vary so you'd have to train him for that."
As much as I would like to see Curlin in a race like the Arc, I agree that he would need a serious turf foundation for it; most horses aiming for it have had carefully planned campaigns with that in mind and it does seem that more than one or two starts on turf would be enough to get there (at least if being competitive were the goal).

In other news, 28-year-old Breeders' Cup Distaff champion and Eclipse Award winner Princess Rooney has been diagnosed with EPM (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis), a neurological disease spread by parasites which can be serious at any point, but is certainly very much a concern for a mare of her advanced age. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

Returning to Curlin, it seems that although it's unlikely we will see him race at five, it's not entirely off the table, according to details from the Paulick Report:

Jackson also called for a "league" or series of races for older horses that he said, if accomplished by 2009, could convince him to keep Curlin in training and forego his stud career for another year. "That's a concept that's attractive," he said, "but the devil is in the details. It's very preliminary."
While obviously just an idea now, such a suggestion is another hopeful sign that the sport is beginning to head in the right direction; coupled with the announcement that the Breeders' Cup is banning steroids beginning with next year's event, there are some encouraging moves to note. Keep 'em coming.

Update 3851: Horse of the Year Curlin's next start will be back on the dirt at Saratoga:Curlin making next start in Woodward.

More details here: CURLIN: WOODWARD NEXT STOP.

Update 3850: A quick update on Nicanor: Update on Nicanor's Activities.

Update 3849: An easy morning this morning at Woodbine, with only six sets for me. Four before the break and two after the break. All galloped easily for a trouble-free morning. We did have a few workers, and Jimmy (McAleney) came in to help out. All seemed to work well.

Update 3848: The Hall of Fame ceremonies were yesterday. Dr. Richardson was the keynote speaker: Hall of Fame: It's All About the Horse.

The sales at Saratoga got underway last night: Mr. Greeleys set early pace at the Spa.

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

Hiya, FsOB! Isn't Edgar Prado simply amazing? What tremendous grace he possesses? It was touching to watch the video of his speech yesterday. Did you see hear how he had a catch in his throat when he referred to his late Mother? And isn't his bond with Barbaro still quite tangible? An amazing sportsman, an inspiring human being!

    #### Erin Brennan would have turned 8 years old today.... In memory of Erin's life, I am writing a very modest contribution to the Friends of Erin Brennan, c/o First National Bank, PO Box 523, West Chester, PA, 19381 and a similar one to TB Friends. Knowing the state of health insurance coverage for most of us in the USA, I strongly suspect that the Brennan Family may have some uncovered health care expenses from Erin's final weeks of life. The Lockbox account set up at the bank can be utilized as needed now by Anne & Terry Brennan. And why TB Friends? Erin loved animals and Joe Shelton does so many nice things to help kids who love horses.... So here's to the memory of Principessa Erin Brennan! ####

    Hay, FOB's!

    ###
In honor of Erin's birthday, I wanted to let the FOB's know of a unique opportunity that I am now working to create. I have been asked by a friend outside of Gettysburg if I would be interested in being part of a group who would work with what are called the Indigo Children (and the other spiritually gifted children who are here). I have accepted and am going to structure Yoga classes for these children...and maybe start to organize some sort of therapy/trail riding so they would know the beauty of the horses. These children are born to create and Yoga and horses are two wonderful resources to help them stay in that creative state.

Erin is one of the inspirations for this and this is how I want to honor her.

Prayer for Jim Gath and his little Dawnie in AZ. He has let her go home... or will soon. Just too much rotation in the hooves too fast. And she's been running in her sleep...he listened, and she just said, "I have to go...."

So hard. Lucky girl to have Jim as her protector, and so lucky for Jim to have Dawnie as his Feisty Lady.

Most of us have been there. It's an awful path to walk and it seems to go on forever...

    We're behind you Jim./

    Morning FOB

Just checking in. The storm made landfall earlier than expected - just east of Galveston. The eye of the storm is near Winnie (Elizabeth), and Baytown (I think Joan) is really getting pounded at the moment - that is heading towards Houston. Some winds are at 50 to 60 mph - lots of rain. No tornados reported.

Thank you for your prayers - and Maribel, yes - keep praying! Sherman is in Tomball, Texas (35 miles northwest of Houston) and is secure. I spoke with Pam several times yesterday. She is wonderful, kind and very knowledgable. She takes great care of Sherman - and she loves him. They are expected to have the winds and rain later this morning.

Thank you again FOB, for holding Texas and Louisiana in your prayers.

It's a calm peaceful morning here
    at Hawk Crest Farm
As I stood at my kitchen window this morning
out of the low lying mist
    walked three baby deer
    The flowers outside my window
    were hosting butterflies of many
    different colors
    bumbles bees
    birds
    and dragonflies
    Down at the barn
    the horses were nickering
    at my arrivial
    waiting for their breakfast
    and the 4 baby kittens
    were snuggled against their mom
    having their morning milk
It is easy to imagine what
    heaven may be like
as I look around my little farm
When the sun broke in the morning sky
    a shaft of golden light
    broke through the clouds
It was then I let my imagination
see what I think is happening in heaven
    today
I saw Jesus in his heavenly robes
    walking and holding the hand
    of a little girl
She, too was bathed in a havenly light
and her robes were angelically pink
    I didn't have to wonder
I knew who the little girl was
Today is Erin Brennan's earthly birthday
She and Jesus were taking a walk
The same little hand that reached
    for the priest's hand
the same little hand that reached up
    in her final minutes
    was holding Jesus' hand
Her hair was around her shoulders and curled
    A halo above her head
and a garland of flowers in her hair
    Behind Jesus and Erin
    Also enjoying a morning walk
    were three horses
One bay, one black/gray roan and one white..
Barbaro, Eight Belles, and the White Mare
    Oh, Frens,
if we only had the strength and faith of
    that little girl..
Today, honor Erin and all those who have left us
    too early
    Do something nice for someone
    Donate to a charity
    Call an old friend
    Hug your family
    and your fur children
    Life is so short
    Tell someone you love them
It may be the last chance you get..

Harriette, I read your post, got up and had to walk around to compose myself, to catch my breath. As Padme said, that is the most powerful piece you've ever written.

To honor Erin today, I will buy our next door neighbor a betta fish. I know it sounds crazy but she is 10 years old, has no pets, so she likes to come over to our house to play with our dogs. We have bettas here and one just died last week (he was 2yo). Julia, our neighbor girl, went to PetCo with me last week to pick out a new fish. How she loves these fish. I asked her Mom if I could get her one, complete with jugs of purified water, water bowl, etc, and I wanted to give it to her today. So later, I'll ask Julia if she wants to go to PetCo for dog food for Devon and Emma, but we're actually going to get her new friend.

More importantly today, in honor of Erin, I will work hard on our cause. I posted yesterday why it is especially important to me now, and always. I fear I will lose a special soul to slaughter.

And Rob, thanks so much for your post at 12:13pm today. Thanks for reminding all of us to also tell people we don't know about horse slaughter. It's easy to get into the habit of just making our individual calls, etc, and forgetting that there are others out there who don't know and would gladly help us if they knew the truth.

All in the path of the storm, please stay safe. Prayers for all who are sad, ill, who need our help.

Aug 5 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Those who revel in working the world of the internet and e-mail have believed they deleted certain things they sent out--but the words were deleted only on the surface. These things can be retrieved and often are.

Indians have always known this to be true--that if you send out any kind of word, it is frozen there in the ethers, forever preserved. Silence is truly golden---though most of us discovered it after too many things had been spoken. But if our remorse is genuine and we ask to be forgiven, those words can become useless and irretrievable. It is important that we remove the power of past words and replace them with thanksgiving.

The first peace...is that which comes within the souls of men when they realize their relationship, their oneness, with the universe and all its Powers.

Through the HBO documentary “Running for Their Lives” I recently became aware of the pipeline of sending horses from the backstretch to the slaughterhouse. We need to establish a core value system with a policy plan whereby we can expose and eliminate these pipeline participants.

Several racetracks have taken the initiative to state that sending racehorses to an auction where a large percentage of them end up at slaughter is unacceptable.

The first week of July, Suffolk Downs’ management told their horsemen that sending horses to slaughter was no longer an alternative and that there would be repercussions, such as loss of stabling, for those making that choice.

The Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association in conjunction with Philadelphia Park management announced the formation of PTHA’s Turning For Home, a nonprofit horse rescue dedicated to helping local owners and trainers secure safe homes and second careers for their retired racehorses.

Charles Town Races has publicly stated that it has banned the two prominently known kill buyers from its backstretch.

One merely has to visit a public auction and “flip lips” to identify Thoroughbreds via tattoo that are in “the stable to table in seven days” flow. I personally identified 15 Thoroughbreds in the direct kill pens at the Sugarcreek auction in Ohio. Horses had raced as recently as five days before at Thistledown. Horses were also identified as last running at Beulah Park, Mountaineer, and Charles Town. There was even a retired steeplechase horse who last raced in Fair Hill, Md.

Upon a recent visit to the New Holland Auction in Pennsylvania, I discovered a 3-year-old Thoroughbred gelding. He was emaciated, scarred from a halter burning his skin, and three-legged lame with a swollen left knee.

I identified him through his tattoo as Falcon Fury. He had made his last three starts at Delaware Park, where he had been claimed from an owner and trainer I currently work for. I called them, and even though they had not owned or trained him for his last two starts, they were shaken by this discovery. Both told me they would financially support whatever I had to do to save him. The trainer’s assistant contacted the racing secretary, the general manager, and the stewards. She confirmed and informed them the horse had last run at Delaware Park July 2, was signed out of the stable gate July 6 by the trainer, and was at the New Holland auction July 21.

Delaware officals have also made it clear they will not tolerate this behavior. They called the last trainer of record into their offices and then sent him to the auction to find the horse. He found us and immediately denied any knowledge of how this horse ended up in this position. However, he admitted he had placed six other horses with the same dealer. He acknowledged he was in a compromised position with the officials at Delaware and they insisted he pay the purchase price and shipping costs. This helped us, but does not provide for a lifetime of care now required for a damaged horse. It was, however, a start.

Delaware’s general manager, John Mooney, assured me the track intends to handle this situation appropriately and is committed to working with the horsemen to help them make the right choice when it comes to retiring and placing horses.

This is another example of a racetrack stepping up and owning responsibility for this situation. Ultimately, we should be able to fix this industry-wide flaw from within. If every owner and trainer would assume responsibility for their own horses, this problem would not exist.
I would venture to say anyone who has watched the documentary would have to acknowledge the pipeline exists. Anyone who looks in the eye of one of these abandoned and abused horses and is not affected by what he or she sees should not be considered a horseperson.

An owner, a trainer, and an assistant trainer proved to me last week that there are enough good horsemen left to make a difference. If all racetracks would adopt a policy to help horsemen handle “unwanted” horses, they would be supporting the kind of horsemen needed to secure the future of our sport. If all tracks would adopt zero-tolerance for shedrow-to-slaughte r practices, they would be moving toward eliminating the participants that do not belong in our industry.

LUCKY HORSES COMING AND GOING UP AND DOWN JOE/CATHY'S LONG DRIVEWAY: LONG MAY THEY WAVE.
    ************************************************
    Tuesday, August 5th...

Last night after dark, from a Los Angeles race track, came Ring Of Friendship. He is 8, and I suppose we will call him Ring. Or maybe we will call him Friend. In his racing career Ring Of Friendship won a Cal Cup race. A true gentleman. The long walk up our driveway in darkness, with flirty mares pushing and shoving against fences for a better look. After all day traveling, Ring Of Friendship showed perfect manners. Into a round pen he goes, and welcome to our world of bugs and heat and reruns of The Munsters.

Earlier in the day came a dark bay mare we purchased from a ranch foreclosure. Her name is Cloudy Forcast, and I suppose we will call her Angela. A big Thank You to Angela Youngblood for providing transportation.

We said goodbye to Sweet And Sour, a chestnut filly with 4 white legs. Sweet And Sour came to us last week from yet another ranch foreclosure, and she goes to live with a very excited family in Oregon. Next spring Sweet And Sour turns 3, and she will be broke to ride. A big Thank You to Kyle Hammonds for providing transportation.

There are e-mails saying I must be drunk. Or old and senile. (old and senile is probably correct) My descriptions of pictures below do not match what you are seeing. You must hit F5 to refresh your page. The new pictures should then appear.

11 year old Kacie brought carrots and apples from Costco, and she wanted to meet Seattle Dreaming. 14 year old Taylor was at our front gate, and would it be all right if she said hello to Heavenly House? 15 year old Amber brought oatmeal cinnamon cupcakes, and she asked to meet Sky Pilot. 16 year old Mouse (her real name is Shannon but all her life she has been called Mouse) asked could she please meet Devil Badgett? 17 year old Rhianna lives in Fresno, and with her family Rhianna drove 4 hours just to meet Military Rhythm. Rhianna and her family then went to San Francisco for dinner.

Dozens of race horses come to us each month, but only a few touch the hearts of others. I have a feeling Ring Of Friendship, the gelding who arrived last night, will soon have a large fan club.

E-mails come for Pony Boy. Gone Cattin. Devil Badgett. A.J. Jet. Garros. Champ. Limo. Jade Beret.

There are days when our horses receive more e-mails than I do. Passing motorists must wonder, what is that crazy old man doing reading to a horse? Neighbors quickly put out their For Sale signs.

Our shoer Tim Gee comes soon, so I must hustle with morning chores. Enjoy your 93 degree Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses. A shrimp with aspargus and black bean sauce in the crockpot kind of day...

    Joe

Top Left: Still a new photo refuses to load, so you get to look at Earnest Storm again.

Top Right: This gelding came to us last week from a race track, and he is injured. He loves carrots but not peppermints.

We have had good luck placing horses at other places who need new homes. Just from showing you their pictures on my morning journal.

Animal Control in Santa Barbara is asking for help with these two horses. There is also a third horse, a yearling filly. I do the screening, and my cell is 530-383-2120. These horses are free.

Bottom Left: This is Lenny, an older gelding who would make a great companion horse.

Bottom Right: Say hello to Elvis. He is broke to ride, but no one knows how broke Elvis really is.

    Dear Carol,

Thank you for contacting me to voice your support of H.R. 6598, the Equine Cruelty Act. I hope you will be pleased to hear that I have requested that Congressman Conyers add me as a co-sponsor to this important legislation.

You may also be pleased to know that I am also a co-sponsor of H.R. 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, which prohibits the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes.

I am passionately opposed to the cruel treatment of animals and I believe that those of us lucky enough to have animals are greatly blessed with their companionship. I am very proud of my track record regarding animal rights. In Tennessee, I helped pass animal welfare legislation that reflects the love and affection we receive from our dogs, cats and other companion animals, and I will continue supporting legislation that protects our animal friends.

I hope that you will feel free to contact me at any time in the future to voice your opinions on legislation before the House; I am very interested in hearing the views of my constituents. If you would like to receive periodic e- news updates from my office, please sign up on my website: www.cohen.house.gov.

    As always, I remain,

    Most sincerely,

    Steve Cohen

I did not know that Edgar's late Mother had been an exercise rider in Peru -

Another piece that Google sent me, on yesterday's HOF Induction Ceremony -

Prado gets the biggest cheers at induction ceremony
    By TIM McMANUS
    tmcmanus@poststar.com
    Published: Tuesday, August 05, 2008

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Three people and three horses were inducted into the National Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame on Monday morning, but the majority of the overflow crowd at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion came to cheer one man.

Head bowed, jockey Edgar Prado accepted three standing ovations, and adoring fans waved a sign and hung the Peruvian flag as he took his place in the Hall. Prado and Carl Nafzger, the trainer of Street Sense, headlined the class, which was inducted in front of a crowd estimated by the Hall to be one of the largest in the ceremonys history.

Jockey Ismael "Milo" Valenzuela, and horses Ancient Title, Inside Information and Manila were also enshrined. The longest and loudest cheers came for Prado, 41, who gained national fame when after a dominating win in the 2006 Kentucky Derby, he was forced to pull up Barbaro in the Preakness after he shattered his right hind-leg.

Many observers credited Prados swift action with saving the horses life on scene. Monday, he remembered Barbaro, who died last January.

"(Thank you) to my friend Barbaro, who is in my heart forever. I miss you, my friend," Prado said.

The Barbaro mention was one of the emotional highlights of a speech that traced his journey from humble roots as the son of horse workers in Lima to a winner of more than 6,000 races, including multiple Breeders Cup and Triple Crown race wins. His voice cracked when his speech turned to his mother, an exercise rider in his native Peru who died of breast cancer in 2006 shortly before Prados Derby win. But just as quickly, he had everyone laughing.

"I want to thank (her) for making me 5-foot-3 and 114 pounds," he said.

Nafzger, who won the Kentucky Derby with Unbridled Street Sense, similarly felt awed by his unconventional journey to the Halls doorstep. Nafzger is also a member of the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Professional Bull Riders Ring of Honor.

"If you dont believe in God, study my life. Its been a miracle," Nafzger said. Even as the industry paused to immortalize six of its own for their place in history, the sports future was on the mind of several of the speakers, from the keynote address by Dean Richardson, the equine surgeon who directed Barbaros care, to the closing words from Nafzger.

Richardson spoke of racing critics who accuse the industry of treating horses as disposable commodities, and challenged the sport to exceed those expectations.

"We owners, trainers, veterinarians we give up on horses too early," Richardson said.

"A lot of advances come from difficult cases ... theres no future in giving up, especially for horses in the public view." Nafzger closed with an appeal to remember the foundation of the sport.

"Weve got to get back to the horse," Nafzger said. "Youre here for the people. Were here because the horse took us here."

Nineteen Hall of Famers, including Lafit Pincay Jr. and Jerry Bailey were on hand to witness the inductions. The 73-year-old Valenzuela, a two-time Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, was the only inductee not present. Because of health reasons, he took part via a previously taped-video from Santa Anita Park.

    The other inductees included:

-- Ancient Title, the California-bred gelding who won 24 races over seven seasons in the 1970s, including a thrilling win carrying 128 pounds in the 1975 Whitney Handicap.

-- Inside Information, the Shug McGaughey trainee who won the 1995 Breeders Cup Distaff by a still-record 13 lengths. She won 14 of her 17 career starts.

-- Manila, the champion turf horse remembered by trainer Leroy Jolley for his nine-race win streak that started in 1986.

Carol Nichols - Good work - thanks for posting the message from Rep. Steve Cohen of TN. This is new news; he is not one of the 24 listed at Thomas.com. Cohen is a cosponsor of 503 and hopefully ALL those cosponsors will sign up for HR 6598 at their earliest opportunity. All they need to do is LEARN ABOUT the new Bill . . .

Am forwarding your post to Deb & Shelley so they can confirm that his name should turn RED on the target list.

EVERYONE please let Deb/Shelley know if/when you get a written commitment such as this from your Rep (or even a reasonably firm indication from an aide) so that the list can be kept current and we can cease contacting Reps who are committed to cs 6598.

    ### Harriette--Thanks for your beautiful poem for Erin. It's so great to see all the not-so-random acts of kindness being done to honor her birthday today.

Over my lunch hour, I dropped off five backpacks stuffed with school supplies for the Salvation Army back-to-school drive, and found cupcakes with LADYBUGS on them--pink and purple!--and brought them back for my co-workers. I also made a donation to the Laminitis Fund in honor of Erin (since I would never have had the privilege of knowing about Erin and meeting her family if not for Barbaro)! And I've got a big box of children's books to haul down to our shipping department and send to the little kids at Anna's House at the Belmont Child Care Center. I hope this will put a smile on Angel Erin's face!!

POSTED ON THE WRONG UPDATE. LOBOTOMY PULEEEEEZ

i just lost a long post about my family who is in dire need of prayer. FoB prayer. Strong, constant, intense prayer for guidance, strength and courgae.

Money issues, my sisters horrible facial, accident 2
weeks ago. Crappy insurance coverage...and then--unreal--some woman drove into my sister's car today. AT least SHE had insurance.

bro-in-laws subsequent meltdown about his age, his job, his old sports injuries....it goes on and on. I'm afriad to pick up the phone. there is a dark moon over my family.

I am not at my most resilient these days, as some of you know.....migraine alley today. so as i send out prayer for hans, maribel, all texans on the coast, jim in AZ, CHERYL G and the loss of her Fren...it just goes on and on.

And then there's Erin Elizabeth Brennan. Who would have been 8 today. i feel like a &%(& because I should be brave like the Brennans. But I'm, so not today.

I need that powerful FoB prayer. Please send it to Wendy and Jeff in NC. God.

    Cheryl and Sherry,
Sending love and prayers your way. As our beloved Mrs. Jackson said, "Grief is the price we pay for love." God bless you both.

Padme, I am sending special prayers for Dawnie. My heart feels her pain.

Jonna, I am praying for you too. Sometimes life just comes crashing down on us. I am hoping tomorrow will bring better news and some needed relief for you. Hang in there, you are a very special part of our FOB family.

Special prayers for Erin's family, and a special thank you Harriette for your amazing words. My heart was deeply moved. It bears repeating...

It's a calm peaceful morning here
    at Hawk Crest Farm
As I stood at my kitchen window this morning
out of the low lying mist
    walked three baby deer
    The flowers outside my window
    were hosting butterflies of many
    different colors
    bumbles bees
    birds
    and dragonflies
    Down at the barn
    the horses were nickering
    at my arrivial
    waiting for their breakfast
    and the 4 baby kittens
    were snuggled against their mom
    having their morning milk
It is easy to imagine what
    heaven may be like
as I look around my little farm
When the sun broke in the morning sky
    a shaft of golden light
    broke through the clouds
It was then I let my imagination
see what I think is happening in heaven
    today
I saw Jesus in his heavenly robes
    walking and holding the hand
    of a little girl
She, too was bathed in a havenly light
and her robes were angelically pink
    I didn't have to wonder
I knew who the little girl was
Today is Erin Brennan's earthly birthday
She and Jesus were taking a walk
The same little hand that reached
    for the priest's hand
the same little hand that reached up
    in her final minutes
    was holding Jesus' hand
Her hair was around her shoulders and curled
    A halo above her head
and a garland of flowers in her hair
    Behind Jesus and Erin
    Also enjoying a morning walk
    were three horses
One bay, one black/gray roan and one white..
Barbaro, Eight Belles, and the White Mare
    Oh, Frens,
if we only had the strength and faith of
    that little girl..
Today, honor Erin and all those who have left us
    too early
    Do something nice for someone
    Donate to a charity
    Call an old friend
    Hug your family
    and your fur children
    Life is so short
    Tell someone you love them
It may be the last chance you get..

Hiya, FsOB! What lovely photos of Bea & Dory with Edgar Prado. Kudos to Bea, Dory, Nancy in CT and everyone who planned such a great tribute for Edgar. I agree with Jonna's comment that there seems to be some sadness in his eyes; it was obvious in the video that he still feels his Mother's passing.

What a profoundly moving poem from our Friend Harriette today, in honour of what would have been Erin's 8th birthday. Harriette, I hope that you will consider sending this to Anne Brennan, if you haven't done so already. I've sent my teensy financial contribution to the Friends of Erin Brennan Lockbox account as well as TB Friends to honour Erin's memory today.

Alex, thanks for the blue link to Nicanor's blog. Nice to keep up with his growth & development!

I am wiped out physically this week, more so than usual and need to call it a night. An ACN for us all! Peace, RMH

    #### To Padme: The Indigo Children program sounds incredibly cool!!!
Hoping that our FsOB in IL & IN are safe after last nights sever thunderstorms and tornadoes!
To Skyler & Dawn in Omaha: The Brennans will be so thrilled when you let them know of your good deeds in Principessa Erin's memory!
To Cheryl G: My sympathies as you mourn Reggie's passing. I have had six Huskies over the past 30 years and five of them have passed over. Please know that their love is pure and never truly leaves one. I am confident that you'll sense Reggie's spirit many times in the future.
To Maribel: Any news about Hans yet?

I just read about Reggie and I am so sorry. Your famblee knows the pain of your loss and we wrap our arms around you for a great big group hug.

Know in your heart that Reggie had the best possible life with you and loved you for it.

I have been through cancer with 3 beloved dogs and no matter what we do, by the time we know, it is usually too late. You did your best and made Reggie's days the best.

I also just read of your loss. Geez, they come into our lives and out time together seems so brief.

One thing I know for sure is that Chico, like all of our furkids wanted for nothing because he had you for a Mom. Hold Amigo tight as you both grieve this horrible loss.

STRATEGY FOR AUGUST 4TH TO 8TH

Congress has now recessed until September 8. However, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list will be posted on the DB and Wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts

As well as calling DC, this is a perfect time to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. Below is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them.

Remember, the first list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We?ve been asked to just let them know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we?re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO?S VOICE?..let it be heard!!!!

    Thanks,

    Shelley and Deb

then air compressed into molecules of time
    spinning spinning
    tossing
folding into one; lap and arms .
.like tender ghosts vapors of things that were and could be and are

there seems to be a long path
between the last tear and the first smile
the lens picks up edgar prado;s deep sadness
    his beautiful face
framed by some foreign wound he recalls
some foreign far away landscape he misses-
his eyes perhaps bespeaking the toughness of his rides
..respect earned by the thread of his great heart and will

    the soft hands of hers
stroking that coal black hair --he is a child standing in the village square
    selling flowers
but running back to the stables.
.the smell of hay and soft nickering
    the becoming

.he had no idea where this would go..
the secrets he has had to carry
noble quiet focusing on the now..

    and hard hard work.
    his mother
he feels the texture of his childhood memories flash before him
    what a long road

.his sense that many helped bring him to the steps of this hall
    the beast of fame
    he knows
    and understands always to work
not to rest ..on some transparent thing
a platform for disguise from his very roots

and how graciously he received bea and dory
    our diplomats at this occasion.
    .the basket overflowing with praise
stuffed with loving cards and well wishes..

    there are empty stalls tonight
..some loved barn pets, some race horses
    broke down this week
trying--gone somewhere we call heaven and endless soft fields of grass
    and another loved one
dawnie and jim had to part
on this earth now above the sky has dawnie as star dust
jim owns now a broken heart

someone lashes out of no where and hurts another

--the moon is but a sliver ice gold yellow
there are those in bed tonight
that have worries and heavy burdens.

the strain of making do and what to do?

the valor of fore thought by many here
a chance to make something new .

the curtains hang limp in the heavy night air
little erin would have been EIGHT yeArs old
    today
..eight and her mother anne makes a garden for ladybugs and flowers
    so she can visit anytime
..she sits in the comfort of the fresh tilled soil
in the invisible laughter of her child
    .
    she follows her instinct
    fresh and alive
    courage all the way

    a mother passes
    her own children grown now
    and with their own children
leaving a family rich in schooling and service
but a very big hole in her husband's heart
    in all of their hearts.
.i feel their loss and the empty spaces in each one i met this night
    in remembering their day
on monday and tuesday and now we are already in wednesday

i hear these songs some fulfilled and others half filled
    i wonder finally
what will happen when the sun rises and we meet a new day

    another chance---
to really hear the horse the horse---
your heart beating next to whom you love ..to hear
    to listen to---
    for
    give
