Barbaro Updates: 648

updates are now here.

Update 3841: Big Brown won the Haskell. But it was ugly. I would be surprised if we see him run again, and certainly this is not the same horse who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

Richard Dos Ramos outrode everyone in the Breeders Stakes at Woodbine. He went wire to wire with Marlang. A great race, and great race riding!

Update 3840: An easy morning for me this morning at Woodbine with only five sets. A few of my horses were working and the jocks came in to ride. Lovely weather too. All the horses I rode galloped nicely, and we had no gate schooling. Very straightforward.

Big Brown returns to the races today for the first time since his Belmont debacle. If he is the real deal, he will win the Haskell very comfortably. Lets just see.

At Woodbine we have the final leg of the Canadian Triple Crown today. The Breeders Stakes. It is a mile and a half on the turf, and should be a race under great conditions. All Breeders' news at Jen's. We have a runner in the first, and hopefully he can (finally) break his maiden.

Update 3839: Reports on the major races yesterday:

Perfect Zenyatta Rolls to Seven Straight
Ready Set Goes in West Virginia Derby
Indian Blessing Cruises in Test
Sky Mom Rallies For Arlington Oaks Win

Update 3838: Zenyatta kept her unbeaten record in tact at Del Mar. Her effort looked easy in the end, but she did have her work cut out to get into position to make her final run. She also looks to be a very large horse!

Update 3837: Many culled thoroughbreds are in need of rehoming: Rescue Effort Seeks Help for 46 Horses, excerpt:

Priscilla Clark, president of Tranquility Farm in Tehachapi, Calif., claims that unless her facility can raise the money to buy and place the Thoroughbreds, which include six stallions and 40 pregnant broodmares, she said they would be sold to unknown buyers, most if not all for slaughter.

"The plan is to procure as many of the horses as possible and put them in a safe situation," she said.

It is discussed here: Seattle Bound -CA Stallion - Needs Help.

Update 3836: Sky Mom ran down Dreaming of Liz in the Arlington Oaks with a big move around the turn. Indian Blessing was in a stalking position before drawing away for an easy win in the Test Stakes at Saratoga.

Update 3835: Ready Set held on to win the West Virginia Derby for the Jackson's and Michael Matz! Z Fortune never really got into the race. We did win the race before with Zanjero, who must love the track at Mountaineer Park.

Update 3834: Two updates from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com. The first from today at Saratoga, the second from Fair Hill, yesterday:

Saratoga:

A light rain is now falling in Saratoga after a beautiful and sunny Saturday morning. While I was in the park looking at the beautiful flowers and listening to the birds I began to think about the yearlings being sold next week. Running along the tree lined street I wondered where they would end up. Who would buy them and where they would race? All of these babies are well bred and have been selected to sell in the main sale at Saratoga. Would their lives be long and happy ones? How will these babies take to being trained and learning about the racing game? I stopped by Walnut Green yesterday to pet a beautiful gray colt. He was standing so politely watching and waiting for his turn to be shown to a prospective buyer. He must have been used to loads of attention because when I stopped to stroke his face and talk to him he just soaked it all in. He seems to trust humans so it is a good start. As I look out the repository window I can see him out again. Having no idea what hip number he is I do not know what his breeding is but he seems to be very popular. Will he like training and stay sound enough to get to the races? Will he run fast or long and have confidence and dig in when being tested? What direction will his life go? This is just the beginning for these babies and hopefully they will give their owner's a lot of exciting racing days and hopefully when their racing days are over their owner's will return the favor by giving them a place to live and all the love they need for the rest of their days! Who knows what direction life takes horses and humans?

Fair Hill:

Today was not bad for a Friday. Rose Campbell has come out of her effort at Penn National the other night just fine. Showing little interest in keeping up with the pack, she will probably go home to be a riding horse. She is very lucky that her owner loves her to bits.

King Congaree and Sweet Ginger Brown breezed this morning. Skipping around the track for five eighths of a mile, both horses seem to be rapidly approaching the races. Sweet Ginger Brown seems to love the Tapeta surface and may make the trip to Presque Isle in a week or so to run. Vicar's Tune is coming around after his last trip to Colonial Downs and may run again next week at Colonial or Laurel. Our Hearthrob and Paris Night are now training partners and went a mile and a half at a leisurely pace this morning. They have both come back from lay offs and seem eager to train.

Saar Treaty will be running at Colonial Downs tommorrow on the turf. Hopefully she will like the track and not be bothered by the ship to Virginia. She is a confident filly and not much seems to bother her.

Real Lace has been under saddle for a few days with Tim in the saddle. He has decided that she needs a little more RNR and has sent her to a local farm. She has come back to her old self being very vocal at feed time. It is wonderful having her back. Hopefully with a bit more time off she will return to win a few more races.

Robbie rode at Saratoga yesterday and finished third beaten by just half a length. What a beautiful racetrack to skip around. I'm sure it is dreadful to get nipped at the wire but the scenery couldn't be better.

Tim is checking to see when the next video will be ready. I remain congnizant of the fact that you can not rush an artist but remain hopeful that it will be finished soon.

Update 3833: More racing news for today.

Baffert is back at Saratoga, and has an interesting runner today in the second, Spaniard, as well as Indian Blessing in the featured Test Stakes: Baffert back for working vacation at Saratoga.

In California Zenyetta returns to the races. She is probably the best filly running in North America: Zenyatta has rivals thinking of second.

At Arlington, I am rooting for Sky Mom, since I think I rode her once in Houston: Sky Mom Primed For Arlington Oaks.

We also have a couple of 2yos running this afternoon at Woodbine, Jen picks neither of them,, but certainly an exciting day all around.

Update 3832: Eight sets today for a relatively busy morning this morning at Woodbine. No gate schooling, which also meant no long break waiting for the gate to open. A few of mine galloped two miles, so quite a few miles galloped also. All went pretty nicely, and the weather here remains gorgeous.

Racing is on ESPN this afternoon, which includes the Test Stakes at Saratoga and the West Virginia Derby at Moutaineer Park: TV Schedule.

Update 3831: Breeders' Cup is taking a strong stand on steroids, penalizing racetracks that don't come on board as well as trainers who get positives: New Breeders' Cup policy bans steroids in all affiliated races.

Trainer Gary Contessa has been named the new President of the Exceller Fund: Contessa named president of Exceller Fund, excerpt:

"My whole life has been built around racehorses and I see this as an opportunity to give even more back to these wonderful animals," said Contessa, a Long Island, New York, native who began his career in the early 1970s at Belmont Park and gained his training license in 1985.

"I have numerous retired Thoroughbreds at my farm in upstate New York and I have been a major supporter of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and Equine Advocates for many years, but I want to do more. My primary focus will be raising awareness about the Exceller Fund and raising funds for the continuing care of the fund's horses."

The FOB presentation to Edgar will be on Monday, Aug. 4 immediately following the induction ceremony. The induction ceremony begins at 10:30 am.
FOBs Dory and GrandmaBea will be doing the presentation.
When I contacted Alie yesterday to let her know that the basket arrived at Dory's house, Alie's first comment was, "Did the bow make it, didn't get smashed?" No wonder that everything KF does is EXCELLENT!!

##### Dear Fren jonna,

There is a word from the white mare for you... (last post from yesterday's comments).

So many of us who saw her lovely face, even for a fleeting moment before turning away from the evil images, will never forget her. She touched us for a reason, the same as did our Beloved BARBARO.

Love follows love. So long as that is true, she lives. Think of her in the buttercup meadow. She has many names, and will always be a part of our song.

Your FOB Fren, O

SATURDAY AT JOE'S. JOE HAS AN OWIE ON HIS FINNER...SO IT GOES. GONNA HAVE TO SOAK THAT ONE OUT....WE'RE WITH YA JOE/CATHY:
****************************************************
Saturday, August 2nd...
Each day becomes more crazy than the previous. Working 16 and 18 hours, with a rerun of Law And Order during lunch. I got to meet Swiss Mocha, a liver chestnut filly who went sight unseen to a fancy barn in Danville. I got to meet Police Captain, a do it all kind of horse who is now 22. Captain once worked for a police department, and he patrolled city streets. Captain was delivered to our friends in Napa, and he will be best friends forever to Sun Ray, a quarter horse mare who was once destined for slaughter. I got to meet Red Lion, and he is not red. Lion is almost black, and he goes to a nice family in a town called Arbuckle.

Silly days are silly. The pressure switch on our water well was eaten away by ants. The man from Wilson Pump said ants like the moisture. So for 5 hours our ranch had no water. Many years ago the pump broke down on our well, and we went three days without water. A long hose was hooked up to our neighbors house, and this is how we survived. Certainly not the best of times...

I jammed a piece of alfalfa down my fingernail, and now anything my finger touches they can hear me screaming in Ft. Worth.

The mirror fell off the old ranch truck. Just plop. Never needed to see behind me anyway.

The dial up computer makes a screeching sound, like when you are watching TV about a hospital, and Code Blue goes off.

The mare Katie keeps breaking water buckets.

The gelding Officer Tony keeps undoing the snap to his stall, and we find him in the mornings munching from our haystack.

A new gelding from a race track in Los Angeles, and he is in bad shape. He constantly removes his leg wraps and spreads them like a blanket.

Another gelding comes to us from a race track in Los Angeles next week, and he won a Cal Cup race. This will be the third Cal Cup winner to retire on our ranch.

I finally got to meet Preston who lives in Red Bluff, California. Preston is 15, and he has been writing us letters for three years.

I finally got to meet Hanna who lives in Santa Cruz, California. Hanna is 17, and she has been writing us letters for almost two years.

Holly Meeks is back from vacation, and yesterday Holly delivered a sight unseen mare to a family in Grass Valley. On the way home Holly had a flat tire on her trailer. A nice man who works for Cal Trans stopped to help. He even gave Holly an ice cold Sprite.

A skinny new gelding living in our mare motel area, and he follows me around like a puppy. I am quickly becoming attached.

On this Saturday, another day of chores and insects and poop on top of poop. But 10 year old Meagan is coming to visit, which automatically brightens any long day. Meagan loves to jump on a race horse and go. I already told her no riding today. Our large round pen is filled with horses. Our mare motel area is filled with horses. We are shoulder to shoulder, hock to hock. A ten percent senior citizen discount on pancakes at Dennys...

Joe

There has not been any time for new pictures. Not for taking pictures, loading pictures, looking at pictures, or even talking about pictures. Below are 4 recent arrivals from race tracks. All 4 are three years old.

Located in Northern California, TB Friends is dedicated to the rescue and placement of horses that have been abandoned or neglected. Usually these horses arrive from the race track. The horses obtained by TB Friends are often saved from a trip to rendering facilities in Mexico or Canada.

When possible TB Friends takes care to select horses well suited to make the transformation to riding mount or show horse. Our proximity to the bay area race tracks, along with the throwaway nature of the racing industry, unfortunately results in a situation where there are many horses in need of rescue, and therefore many horses from which to choose.

At TB Friends we manage to rescue about two hundred horses every year. When we place a horse there is no charge for the care that we provide them here at Shelton Farms. We only ask for the cost of a horse's rescue and transportation to the farm. For most horses this amounts to less than $1000 dollars.

Sadly, we can not save them all. We are limited by the number of horses that we can care for at any one time. However, as we find homes for the horses we have rescued, we replace them by rescuing others. For this reason we ask you to consider purchasing a horse from our farm. Not only are you likely to obtain a beautiful animal, but you will also help us to save more horses.

I do not know where everyone is....but there is another crisis in the NJ feedlot.

PLEASE

Send anything you can...I will continue to try to understand why i do not understand this seemingly endless rescue.

Please. Whatever you can send. These horses are hapless victims. PayPal NEER

We have to show the world that we are ready to shoulder the yolk when slaughter ends and help these rescues....

Hope to god these frantic days will end soon, and we will only have to worry about sustaining these horses, or worrying about why we live in a country where come feels it's OK to drag a horse behind an ATV--just for whAT? kicks? ANger? My head hurts so bad today.

JOAN? BARB? RENEE? Where you all be? FRAN? I know you have been at this a while....

We must have hope. HOPE> and of course: COURAGE.

Good Morning Gang.

Peppers Pride won't be running at Ruidoso Downs today. She has been unable to train because of the flooding/storm from last week end. It will be mid to late August before she tries for her 17th consecutive win, breaking modern day records held by Citation, Cigar, Hallowed Dreams, and Mister Frisky.

Safe racing for the furry and non furry ones today.

Need $310 today for Brittany to p/u on Sunday am

Any amount will help so much.

Thank you....ellie az

hAy
I actually posted an hour or so earlier, but my post went away weerd

The NJ rescue continues. More horses. It seems there are more delivered daily. They just keep coming. Mr. Frank is having a banner summer with earnings from us. Don't know how many are taken by other independent buyers.

Food for thought. Has this lot suddenly becme a major source of income for Mr. Frank? one horse was resold to his original wner who had no idea that his horse was there. That was the semi-lame gelding. How many others are in that predicament. I'm just sayin'

There is a huge crisis in CA in which a TB farm is "downsizing" There are said to be 40 mares in foal, and many respectably pedigreed stallions, who are probably still covering mares as we speak because these dolts don't seem to understand that if they can't support the animals they have, they damn well shouldn't be allowing them to spawn. Trying to get some CA connections into action here. This is mindblowing,a real abomination. There's a thread in Horse Rescue on the DB.

This is a huge part of our battle, frens and famblee. this can't happen anymore

Hay Cheryl, I know they are looking for good stories re rescues and such, maybe the story of the inconsiderate breeding dolts could be added to this. That IS where the problems begin.

Trying to make sense to these people is like talking to a piece of wood. They won't hear you. They won't accept responsibility. And it will always ALWAYS be someone else's fault, including the horses.

Makes me want to scream and do some blood letting.

jonna, all,

Here ya go:

Saturday afternoon update on Dawnie.....

I got her into one of the stalls in the barn - shady & with fans. When I tried that several days ago, she went so nuts we had to put her back into the field & build "Dawnie House" for her - her own pen within a pasture.

This time, I gave her a shot of domorsodan & am augmenting that with a couple of cc's of ace promazine every few hours. To keep her calm. She seems okay with the situation so far. Not great, but okay. If she can deal with it for the next 12 hours, she'll be past her initial distress of leaving her usual herd.

Doc also had me start giving her 10 aspirin twice a day to help get the inflammation out. And - I've gotten a couple of those cold/hot packs that I kept in the freezer for a while. Wrapped them around her coronet bands & am keeping them in place with vet wrap. So far, so good.

The best thing I can do for a little while is to leave her alone. When she sees me, she thinks she can hoodwink me into taking her home. Pulls all of her little drama queen stunts.

She's next to Ted-d-d & I've given him strict instructions to be nice to her. And Moosie's two stalls away & I've asked him to use his best Medicine to help, too.

I'm a little more encouraged this afternoon but, man, have we got one tough row to hoe ahead of us.

OK, fine.

Whatever it takes. However long it takes. Because there's NOTHING in my life more important right now.

And thank you from the bottoms of all our hearts here at Tierra Madre for your loving & powerful prayers & thoughts.

Jim

More heroics from Edgar Prado!

Was anyone watching ESPN a little while ago? They showed tape of a race a couple of days ago in which a rider's rein broke. Prado called to him to come over closer, hooked the loose rein with his whip and lifted it up where the other rider could grab it.

What an amazing show of sportsmanship - not to mention coordination and selflessness.

Edgar's horse finished third; other rider was out of the money. Didn't catch the race or venue, though; but I think they said it happened on Thursday.

Bravo Edgar. Always amazing. Always true.

In Hong Kong, Olympic Equestrian Events are going to be held in the very early AM, or very late PM to protect horse and rider from heat. Enlarged golf carts have been fitted with generators, hoses, and bathtub sized tanks full of cold water for those in need of quick dousings. Powerful fans will spray the horses before and after they compete. The U.S. horses will also be wearing blankets filled with cold water. And the horses will have access to one of the world's top equine hospitals and drug testing laboratory. Dr. Jeffcott states these Olympic facilities are the best, without a doubt. Pollution is of slight concern. And in each of the last 2 Olympics, a horse has had to be destroyed due to injury. Due to the controversy this has caused, everyone is keeping their fingers crossed for an injury free Olympics.

It appears the horses will be well taken care of. Let's hope they all come home safe.

MargieinNM,

I have been married for 30 years to a "real man". He doesn't swear, doesn't drink (to excess) is kind to his parents (and mine) and even my dogs love him. And he doesn't get jealous - even when I talk about Edgar and Alex!

He's not the strongest, or most handsome, or most brilliant man in the world - except in my eyes.

Real men are out there, but they tend to disguise themselves as ordinary, responsible guys. They don't look like superheros, they look like "alter egos". The trick is seeing through the Clark Kent disguise... after finding one that isn't already spoken for!

Had the thrill of seeing Sky Mom win the Arlington Oaks today (in person)...NICE move, to finish just slightly ahead of our local "good girl", Dreaming of Liz. The owner, Heather Stark, said that Sky Mom is a joy and they are very pleased with Steve Asmussen and his staff.

The reason we were at Arlington was the annual Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) "Day at the Races", which last year raised over $50,000 for CCI. It was another great event, along with some amazing racing, with several very close finishes. All came home safe as far as I am aware. Got to tell some "new" people about anti-slaughter efforts, so that was also a good thing.

And this year I didn't have to run up and down between this and the Midwest FOB gathering - yea! Next Saturday will be the Midwest FOBs get-together at the Arlington Million. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Sad News....
It took a lot of searching but here is the update...

".... We had the first casualty of the meet when Nordberg broke her cannon bone in her right front leg soon after breaking from the gate. Jockey Ramon Dominguez quickly bounced up but the damage to the 4-year-old filly was too severe to save her and she was euthanized on the track. The race was won by favorite Heather's Angel, who held off Go Go Bar."

Rest in Peace Nordberg

If you know anyone who still needs proof of Barbaro's greatness, give them the following quote from Michael Matz. It says volumes about Barbaro and the Barbaro Effect very subtly yet succinctly.

"You know, that horse [Barbaro] has done so much for so many people that it will probably never end," said Michael Matz...."

FINALLY whatever internet imps were blocking my access to this site, have found something better to do! Good morning all, still kvelling over the gain of TEN new cosponsors for HR 6598 in the past week (raising the total to 22 PLUS the sponsor). When the Bill was introduced on 7/24, there were 12.

Looking forward to seeing what all has been going on since I found myself unable to get here. (Still could go to and post at the DB, just blocked from here. Anybody else have that problem the last few days? Just wondering.)

Had a fabulous trailride on Saturday morning - during the ride, I passed out flyers that I tote in my saddlebag to two gentlemen out with their dogs and one female runner, and left multitudes of them at two stables (where Shona, my ride, lives, and around the corner where Shanty, my mare before last, lived) - and at a local tack shop. A good morning!

Music last night, and again tonight and Monday AND Tuesday - and at every gig, more people getting flyers - and now the flyers are so much more intense and focused.

Will check in again after I catch up on what's been going on since Friday night.

Aug 2 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Knowledge is evidence of the past--but wisdom is using it to see the future.

Knowing what to put in your bouquet of life takes wisdom. Drugs and alcohol and unrestrained behavior are the poison ivy among a field of life-giving herbs and beautiful flowers. These things are known to be toxic and death---but someone who had worldly knowledge knew they made a person have hallucinations. This need to look into hell is like calling home for comfort--it's not going to happen.

Say it: "I am a person with the power to draw on unlimited wisdom--and I do it now by turning away from images of total foolishness and destruction."

If the child cries for mercy, that child must have mercy.

Aug 3 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

She is one of those persons whose entire time is given to informing the world about what she does not like. It is not a simple opinion but an oration spread over a long time and many acquaintances.

Because people are often tolerant, she sits in a gathering with confidence--confidence that assures her how many need to hear, "I don't like that...."

O persons, your words are frozen in time, a halo of light or darkness that swirls through the ethers like immense flocks of tiny birds hunting food. But those words come home to roost. They do not sing, but they squawk in complaining sounds and echo in the heads of those who cannot like the simplest thing.

My children, as you travel along life's road never do harm or cause anyone sadness.

A Seat in the Bleachers: Heroic act surmounts will to win

Sunday, August 3, 2008
By Mike MacAdam
Gazette Reporter [Schenectady, NY]

Edgar Prado helped fellow jockey Javier Castellano out of a precarious situation last week at Saratoga Race Course.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Javier Castellano was piloting a runaway jet on Wednesday.

Soon enough, he had two escorts.

John Velazquez and his horse, Talking Treasure, cruised up on his right, and Edgar Prado, on Ice Cool Kitty, steadily moved up on his left, just off the rail.

This wasn’t a furious, blanket finish to win a race, it was the quiet, early stages of the Fleet Indian stakes far out on the Saratoga Race Course backstretch, where few patrons roam and the action on the track can be difficult to discern from the comfort of the grandstand and clubhouse.

Like he always does, Castellano checked his equipment before the race, including his reins, and they looked fine. The right one wasn’t.

It broke as soon as Precise Lady jumped out of the gate, and the jockey might as well have been reeling in a huge tuna when the line snapped.

Worse than the shock of the initial recoil, suddenly Castellano was on a speeding horse with no way to tell her what to do.

That’s when his buddies swooped in on either side, and it was Prado, the 41-year-old Peruvian who will be inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame on Monday, who pulled off one of the niftiest pieces of legerdemain you’re ever going to see.

“My hero,” Castellano said in the backyard of the jockey’s quarters on Thursday as Prado walked by.

If there was a special Hall of Fame of Sportsmanship somewhere, a head-on clip of this race would be in the video vault.

Twice, Castellano tried desperately to reach below Precise Lady’s neck and grab the flapping piece of leather, while bolting ahead of the pack toward the turn. He heard other jockeys tell him to relax, but “I can’t control the horse. It’s very scary,” he said.

Prado, who would have preferred to ask his filly to make a run to the front much later in the race, steadily motored up abreast of Precise Lady, pulled out his whip, and in the blink of an eye reached across the throat of Precise Lady and lifted the rein to Castellano’s hand with the tip of the stick. On the back of a 1,000-pound beast. Moving at 40 miles an hour.

It was walking and chewing gum at the same time, to the nth power. Zorro would have loved it.

There’s been plenty of scrutiny and criticism of horse racing this year, and rightfully so.

In how many professional sports would you see an athlete help another during the heat of competition, though? An NFL player would be scoffed at, and rightfully so. You don’t turn around and help up the guy you just de-cleated.

The business of a thoroughbred jockey is supposed to be cutthroat. They compete for mounts on the backstretch in the morning, they compete for purses in the afternoon. The level of sang-froid and — to borrow a Bill Raftery favorite — onions required to beat somebody to a tiny hole that is the only portal to victory, on the back of a rattling rocket, doesn’t translate to too many professions in the world.

OK, Prado’s act was part self-preservation, part altruism for the good of the population — i.e. all seven jockeys and horses in the race — whatever you want to call it, but the fact remains that Prado compromised his chance to win by helping Castellano. The difference between the purse share ($49,050) to the winning connections of Talking Treasure and third place (Ice Cool Kitty, Prado) was $40,875.

Prado shrugged off the notion that he might have won if he hadn’t helped Castellano.

“I think it was more important that nobody got hurt, you know? Than winning the race,” he said. “I mean, there’s plenty of other races. A human being is more important.”

THAT BEING SAID, reposting:

"near misses" and "tragic ends"

I am soliciting for personal documentable stories to be submitted by HSUS to the Subcommittee ASAP.

Everybody with verifiable story of HORSE WAS NOT UNWANTED yet on way to killer - like the lame chestnut gelding from NJ who was (I'm tearing up
again on typing this one) recognized by a friend of his former owner who saw his pic on ABR Forum and now reunited . . . like one in particular from I think it was the Sugarcreek save, whose owners were alerted to his situation and reclaimed him - again, via ABR, without
which those two, to name a few, would not be reunited with their owners - ] . . . esp stories where original owners sold/donated with
stipulation to be notified if horse was ever to be disposed of - THAT IS THE EVIDENCE TO DEBUNK A LARGE PART OF THE MYTH OF THE UNWANTED HORSE.

PLEASE SEND YOUR STORIES to HSUS for use in Congress - send to Stacy Segal: ssegal@hsus.org

THANK YOU ON BEHALF OF THE HORSES.

Note - HR 6598 started out with 12 cosponsors when the Bill was introduced on July 24; a week later, on July 31, there were TEN more for a total of 22; and TWO MORE the very next day, August 1. That's DOUBLE the number of cosponsors in just over a week. STAY TUNED - and may our efforts keep this number increasing and increasing . . .

ESPN on my tv schedule does not show that the race in on TV today. It has golf, tennis, etc etc but not the race. If I cant get it someone please let me know about Big Brown.

JOE: JOE BARGAINS FOR A HORSE HE INITIALLY HAD TO LEAVE BEHIND...BUT GOES BACK FOR. HE IS MY HERO.
HE'S UP THERE WITH EDGAR PRADO, IMHO...
**************************************************
Sunday, August 3rd... Way too often this has happened. I go to a feed lot or auction, and on the way home I am feeling just awful for not saving a particular horse. No money, no space, no room with our foster families. The horse stays in my brain, and guilt can beat you senseless.

On Friday I phoned horse killer Brent Sanchez and begged. Do not load the personality plus gelding for the long trip to Canadian slaughter. He might be a thoroughbred, he might be a mixture of this and that. The gelding is small, barely leads, and there are many areas on his body that have been whipped. Still, at the feed lot he came right up and wanted to be friends.

And so horse killer Brent Sanchez and I did a deal. He gets $450.00 and a $100.00 gift card for gasoline. I get the personalilty plus gelding who barely leads. The remaining 14 feed lot horses were loaded into a large stock trailer. And late Friday night they left Vallejo, California for slaughter in Canada.

The personality plus gelding came to us yesterday, after almost an hour of pleading with him to get on a trailer. Out to our south field he goes, and from a character on Law And Order we have named him Munch.

Last night at supper feeding Munch is waiting at the gate. There are maybe 20 horses in this field, but it only took a few hours for Munch to become the gate keeper.

I will show you his picture one morning next week. Munch has whip marks and bite marks all over his body. He is not at all attractive. Hallmark will not use him for their next calendar.

So, with Alicia Keys full blast on the truck cd player, why did Munch affect me so? Almost an hour to get home from the feed lot, and I could not stop thinking about him.

Munch needs weight, vaccinations, his teeth checked, and he must learn how to lead. Surprisingly his feet are in good shape, though he was not thrilled about picking up his legs for me.

There were 17 horses at this feed lot in Vallejo. Paints, quarter horses, and thoroughbreds still with their racing shoes. Including Munch we were able to save three. There was a tall race horse filly with a badly bowed tendon. So bad it might also be a sesamoid injury. Horse killer Brent Sanchez said her name is Global. Tbfriends paid for Global, and she was shipped to our friend Tara in Vacaville. No room on our ranch for another injured horse, and Tara specializes in rehabing tendons. The third horse was a thoroughbred gelding with one racing shoe, and he was put on the same trailer as Munch. We have named him McCoy, from a character on Law And Order. McCoy is now living in our north field.

A beautiful Sunday morning, and time to feed 107 horses. Through our bedroom window I can see Munch waiting at the gate. He should be easy to halter break. At least you would think...

Joe

Recent arrivals from race tracks:

Top Left: This is Ernest Storm, and he earned good money as a race horse.

Top Right: A sweetheart of a filly we call Maddie, and her registered name is Imsomadatmyself.

Bottom Left: Seattle Dreaming, and a sweeter gelding you will never meet.

Bottom Right: Military Rhythm, and Limo comes to introduce himself.

I don't believe this!!!

My cable company lost their contract with ESPN. To my surprise I was able to find a free air channel here in United Arab Emirates, "Dubai Racing." This station is much better than ESPN. They have all the races from everywhere.

I'm watching Big Brown at the paddock at the moment, how exciting!!!!

am so very sorry for your of your beautiful Chico. As Jonna said, in hevvin, time stops, and days never end. When you are reunited, it will be as though you were never apart. Meanwhile, he'll have so much company as he romps and plays in that giant dog park.

The only thing wrong with dogs? they aren't here long enough.

Alex,

Why did you say that about Big Brown. I am a novice on horse racing, so I would like to know what you saw.

Posted by: mj at August 4, 2008 12:04 AM

What happened??? Big Brown won....but it was ugly??

Did he fight Desormeaux again?? Somebody quit with all the he looked happy posing for the camera stuff and tell us what the heck happened???

If Alex said it wasn't pretty it wasn't....I trust Alex!! He is qualified to critique the performance!

So someone anyone ...WHAT HAPPENED???

Is he OK???

Posted by: Maribel at August 4, 2008 12:08 AM

I'm interested to hear your insight too, Alex. What didn't I see? other than the usual speed that I attributed to Brown being drug-free for several weeks now. but even so.....?

Posted by: Cheryl Jones, one of the Americans Against Horse Slaughter at August 4, 2008 12:10 AM

###Me, too, Alex. Why was Big Brown's win "ugly," in your opinion?

I thought the isolated camera showing the loose outside rein indicated that perhaps there was an issue with the inside (left) front leg and Frank Lyons said the horse might have "felt" that foot--and he did finish in the middle of the track.

I thought Dutrow was subdued at the end of the race, so maybe HE saw something that wasn't "there" before either.

On a side note, and not to sound SNIDE, horses don't run the same on steroids as they do on their own, do they? I'm just glad Big Brown is off the juice.

###Anyway, Alex, 'splain, please ;o)

STRATEGY FOR AUGUST 4TH TO 8TH

Congress has now recessed until September 8. However, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list will be posted on the DB and Wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts

As well as calling DC, this is a perfect time to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. Below is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them.

http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/legislation/110_equinecruelty_hr6598.pdf

Remember, the first list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to just let them know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.
You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.
Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!!

Thanks,
Shelley and Deb

Does anyone else think anhydrosis could be Big Brown's problem? He was barely sweating during the Belmont when it was in the 90s, and today in the Haskell (80s) he did not break a sweat until after the race, and then it was just on his front quarter. I think he may have a metabolic problem that could potentially be easily addressed with electrolytes and adding fat to his diet and removing the grain. This could be related to removing the steroids from his regimen I think, but I'd love to see a veterinary perspective on this. Regardless of the reason, his connections should check this out.

Posted by: Jennie R at August 4, 2008 12:28 AM

Jennie R

I think you could be right....steroids are prety serious stuff and not to be taken lightly or ill advisedly. It's time owners and trainers realized that!! Let's wait and see what Alex says????
Good to see you post Jennie...

Posted by: Maribel at August 4, 2008 12:35 AM

Jennie..my DH says "I dunno, he looked fit to me" He is about as muscled and sinewed as a thoroughbred could hope to be. I would think that any metabolic problem could be easily detected with any routine cbc or screening, or in a urine collection.

I totally missed the loose rein, watching the way Kent held him back until the last push. Was watching the left side, as Kent was seemingly more focused on the left, keeping Brown more open on the right. Wish there had been a head on shot. maybe that would have been more revealing?

Shelley, what did you see?

Posted by: Cheryl Jones, one of the Americans Against Horse Slaughter at August 4, 2008 12:40 AM

Maribel, i think all of us are interested to know what Alex thinks, not doubtful of his critique. Just wish to be educated.

btw, how's Hans doing ?

Three horses died on the tracks this weekend? Oh god.

Sherry, I'm so sorry about Chico. I hope the hurt soon turns to smiles and happy memories. I hope that when you're ready, Chico sends you a new furkid to love-one who will remind you of Chico, but be his or her own special baby, too. We're here for you. We get it.

Posted by: Susan E. at August 4, 2008 12:49 AM

Cheryl,
I couldn't begin to second guess what the problem is but it was obvious that he was not the same horse that we knew before the Belmont. He almost seems "green".
It's quite possible that there is NOTHING wrong....he just doesn't have it. There is not always a reason. Sometimes horses peak early.

It was an easy field and he should have blown them away instead of struggling. I would defer to those that know better

Posted by: ShelleyA at August 4, 2008 12:54 AM

First, I spelled the condition wrong: it is anhidrosis. Also, after googling on Big Brown and anhidrosis I see that others have brought this up. Some seem to think that BB's connections would not want to reveal this problem?! From what I have read there are nutritional approaches that could have a big impact to reduce/eliminate anhidrosis--I wonder if they have tried any since the Belmont? Specifically, I really wonder if they have tried eliminating his grain and giving him a whole bunch of fat/oil instead. This would have to make a difference. Wouldn't it be SO GREAT if they could solve this problem and return Big Brown to his former greatness. (Hi Maribel--nice to hear from you!)

Posted by: Jennie R at August 4, 2008 12:56 AM

Hiya, FsOB! I am relieved to read that Big Brown won the Haskill, but am very concerned to read Alex's comment that today's BB is not the same horse who won the Derby. I hope that BB will be retired now if he is experiencing any additional problems with his feet....

Joe Shelton is the Gandhi for our time, I truly believe it. If anyone missed his blog, I encourage you to see what Joe did to save the poor beaten horse that he has dubbed Munch.

ACN to each of you! Peace, RMH

#### RIP Nordberg.

I just watched the rerun of it on NTRA....
He didn't seem to have an easy time this time??? I'll let Alex explain...some odd moves there?? Not as smooth as his Derby or Preakness...

Hans is still in a lot of pain but we are hopeful that the results of the bonescan which should be back on Tuesday will nail down where the pain is originating from and something can be done to correct the problem and finally end all the pain and inflamation in his chest etc.

So news on Tuesday...Monday tomorrow is a holiday here....

I don't know much about racing, but I did see Big Brown struggle and thought he fought hard to win this race, wherein the Kentucky Derby and Preakness he blew everyone away, no competition there.

This race was really a race, Big Brown raced as he should have. Even though he didn't run like he previously did, it still showed he is a strong horse and doesn't need the juice.

Hi Robyn

Posted by: Soc at August 4, 2008 1:52 AM

The ugly truth could be that BIG BROWN just wasn't running on 'the juice' of steroids.

But, "ugly" or not, he is a spectacular champion...and he won his race.

Thank God that he and his fellow beauties made it home safely.

So sad to hear that there were three, today, who did not. To them we say, RIP Dear Ones. Someone cries for you.

Your FOB Fren, O

Posted by: Otherlyn at August 4, 2008 1:59 AM

Big Brown was all out to win against a horse who just lost at an optional claiming race. I wasnt impressed. He clearly is not the horse from the Derby, or maybe everyone else is just catching up. I totally agree with you alex. I thought he was beat. He was literally, Kent went to the whip early on the far turn and all the way down the stretch. He is no threat to Curlin.

Blood horse is running a big article about those 46 horses in CA. It maybe what the rescue needs to save them. It makes the owner Warren look like a jerk. Jen

(((Big Brown)))

How can the value of a horse or its' offspring be clearly established if that horse won most of the races on steroids? How do people know if it is good genes or a good syringe full???

Sick and grumpy today. But I really would like to know how a buyer can trust that 'system'.

So, now we have had 6 straight hours of non-stop Brett Farve on TV! He better be good or he is going to look like a fool. I can understand thus bveing a news story, but to take all regularily scheduled stories off TV and follow his plane or car is beyond what is needed.

Actually, I feel bad for Aaron Rodgers. The job was his and now maybe they have to take it away.

I too am so excited about tommorrow and Edgar.
