Barbaro Updates: 647
updates are now here.
Update 3830: Dutrow continues to do things his own way, blowing out Big Brown on the turf in preparation for this weekend's Haskell: Big Brown Blows Out for Haskell on Turf, excerpt:
"He went really well," IEAH Stables co-president Iavarone said. "The dogs were way out off the rail, and it was just what we wanted; no gallop-out. It was just a lung opener. Rick decided to work on the turf just to protect his feet. God forbid if anything went wrong, like if he stepped on a rock or something like that. Rick said he had a nightmare with Rising Moon, and he didn't want to have anything like that happen again."
Update 3829: As many of us are aware, a new House Bill (HR 6598) is being offered to end horse slaughter. A House Judiciary subcommittee hearing was held yesterday: House considers ban on killing horses for food, excerpt:
"From the transport of horses on inappropriate conveyances for long periods of time without food, water or rest -- to the very ugly slaughter process in which horses react with pain and fear, no evidence exists to support the claim that horse slaughter is a form of humane euthanasia," said Nicholas Dodman, one of the founders of Veterinarians for Equine Welfare.
I had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Dr. Dodman a couple of months ago. He truly cares about this issue and is adamant that horse slaughter is simply inhumane. Please help support HR 6598 by calling your representative and urging that your representative becomes a co-sponsorship.

Update 3828: Seven sets this morning at Woodbine. A relatively straightforward morning under gorgeous weather. Two of mine went to the gate for a little schooling. No problems. All galloped nicely. I had a little break between the fourth and fifth sets so wandered over to the kitchen to grab a coffee and then to the HBPA office to read the racing form. An easy and typical morning.
Update 3827: The third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, a mile and a half turf event, is at Woodbine on Sunday. Sadly the winners of the first two legs, Not Bourbon and Harlem Rocker will not be competing. For all the news, go to Jen's Thoroughblog.
A nice piece on Kathy Anderson, Fair Hill's vet: Inside Track: Top o' the Hill.
Please keep calling and writing.
For Canadians: Canadian Horse Defense Coalition Call to Action.
Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous, Belle, KeyKey and the rest of the gang of Heavenly Equines.
HAPPY AUGUST. HERE WE GO...
MORNING POST/SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:
STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY AUGUST 1
The feedback we received after today's hearing was that it went VERY well. Many of us listened on line and were so impressed by those that spoke out in favor of ending horse slaughter. You should all be extremely proud of yourselves for the huge job you did. It really set the groundwork for HR6598 and it seems as though we are off to the right start. Now, we just need to keep sprinting. Once again it shows what can be accomplished when we all work together.
Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598.
As well as calling DC, this is a perfect time to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words.
We now have even more of a reason to remain motivated. None of us knows for sure what tomorrow will bring but it is not impossible to see the end of horse slaughter this year.
We are BARBARO'S VOICE...let it continue to be heard!!!
Thanks for everything,
