Barbaro Update: 658

updates are now here.

Update 3896: A pleasant afternoon spent at Woodbine. We had a couple of runners, one of which won nicely (Poppin). Lovely weather during our races. It did rain later.

Update 3895: Red Rocks is scratched from tomorrow's Sword Dancer at Saratoga. Better Talk Now will now be one of the favorites: Red Rocks Out of Sword Dancer Stakes.

Update 3894: Paulick Report looks at the reach of the Jockey Club within the racing industry: JOCKEY CLUB: ALL ABOUT CONTROL.

Update 3893: An update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

Tim has reported that he had a great Thursday morning. Our Hearthrob sped away from the gate yesterday and today she worked an eighth of a mile is a blistering thirteen. She is doing great and has become quite a solid little girl. Lilly (sister of Who's Happy) worked again this morning and Tim says that she takes after her big sister in more than one way. All of the babies out of Enraged have been tough cookies and Lilly is no differant. That's OK with us because the first two fillies are both stakes winners and hopefully Lilly will follow them down that path.

Robbie just rode a winner in Saratoga for Jonathon Sheppard. It must be quite exciting to ride and win a race in beautiful Saratoga.

Veiled Reference went to the track for the first time yesterday and she is doing great. The trainer and I have miscommunicated about when Happy is running. She is running on PA day at the races but it is actually next Saturday not this Saturday. Happy is doing great and hopefully it will be a good day for both the owners and the trainer.

Update 3892: A simply gorgeous morning this morning at Woodbine. A pleasure to be riding horses. We had seven sets, four before the break and three after the break. All three latter horses went to the gate for a little schooling. All went nicely, the horses enjoying the lovely weather too. As I started galloping my last horse, after visiting the gate, I spied a loose horse coming flat out towards us. Thankfully he stayed along the outside rail and exited the track as I was galloping by. Those can always be dodgy moments.

Update 3891: Many good races this weekend at Saratoga where the wet weather has been a contributing factor:

Proud Spell in a small and talent-filled field for the Alabama Stakes: Music Note Adds to Alabama Intrigue

Red Rocks, Dancing Forever and other Grade 1 winners compete in the Sword Dancer: Grade I Winners Invade Sword Dancer

Finally, Evening Attire may be a possibility for the John’s Call Stakes on Sunday: Evening Attire Hopes It's Off the Turf

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

For Canadians: Canadian Horse Defense Coalition Call to Action.

Good morning everyone

Good morning Barbaro.

Hiya, FsOB! Yes, it's already starting to drizzle here on the banks of the Thames. To quote my late Mother, "I feel as though I am going to sprout feathers!" (That means that it's rained sooo much that I feel as though I'm a duck!)

May all horses and their riders be safe today and this weekend. Alex, thanks for the blue note about Music Note's entry in the Alabama Stakes at Saratoga. TGIF!!!

Good morning, fellow Fans!

###
Robyn Hoffmann - Yes, we have had many, many, many storms here in the Downeast. I'm ready to grow webbed feet! 3 to 4 times the normal rainfall. We had a couple of "dry" days and then the heavens openned up yesterday for about 45 minutes and dropped an inch or more. They can't keep the navigation buoys in place in the rivers because of high water. Farmers can't hay or tend other crops. Silver lining (I guess) is that no one's well is running dry and there's a very low fire danger! Thanks for asking!

I will be away for a few days with no internet access. I'll check back in on Tuesday.

Thank you, Alex, for all you do!

ROBYN - I heard on the local news yesterday that CT already has a surplus of 13" of rain for the year...wish I could bottle it up and share with our frens in bone-dry CA!

Of course, I am very happy that the first half of August was much milder than usual...and all this rain means GREEN grass, when we usually have brown straw by this time of the summer.

HOW DOES HE DO IT. LIKE MY FRIEND SAID ONCE, LONG AGO, STANDING BY THE DOG TRACK BOXES,AT HINSDALE IN NH, 'IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO THIS RESCUE WORK, YOU HAVE TO TURN OFF PART OF YOUR BRAIN.'
AMEN TO THAT. GOD BLESS SERAPHIM JOE, ROOTING FOR THE CARNIVAL PONIES OF THE WORLD...AMONG ALL THE OTHER DOOMED EQUINES IN CA.
***************************************************
Friday, August 15th... This week I have been telling you about horses waiting for slaughter at Northern California feed lots, and if you would like to rescue one give me a call. Eight generous readers of Tbfriends said okay, and now eight once doomed horses have new homes.

Including a pony, and at first I told the lady there are seldom ponies at feed lots. Which only shows you how little I know about our current state of affairs. I always figured ponies do not weigh much, and since horse killers earn their money from the weight of each horse, ponies are safe from slaughter. But horse killer Brent Sanchez in Vallejo says he has a pony, an unattractive older guy who has spent most of his life working carnivals. And now his little feet are sore.

I was shocked. I asked horse killer Brent Sanchez, you really send little ponies to slaughter in Canada?

His exact reply: There is usually room on the trailer for a pony or two to squeeze in.

Well the lady caller who wanted a pony I phoned right back, and told her about the carnival worker with tired feet. Carnival ponies go round and round in circles all of their life. The lady said she was unsure. The purpose of the pony would be to give her grandkid a ride, and if this pony is old with sore feet, he is not the pony for her.

So I called a friend in Rio Linda who has two other ponies, and asked would you like one more? Horse killer Brent Sanchez wants $180.00, and Tbfriends is willing to pay for shipping. My friend says sure, bring him over. My friend goes to an ATM machine, and when the little pony arrives she pays $180.00.

Horse killer Brent Sanchez wants to know, did I count the money? How could I, I was never there. The $180.00 was given to his delivery driver. Brent Sanchez says there was only $140.00 in the envelope. Plus Tbfriends promised to pay for shipping, which means I owe another $75.00.

It was 105 degrees. I have a badly injured horse from the race track and I refuse to leave his side. I am not driving to Vallejo to hand over $115.00 to Brent Sanchez. I have been buying horses from him for over two years. He can wait a few days.

And then I told Brent Sanchez his delivery driver must have stolen the missing $40.00, because if my friend in Rio Linda says there was $180.00 in the envelope, then there was $180.00 in the envelope. I trust my friend. I do not trust the delivery driver. By the way, the delivery driver is named Rocky. Like in a mafia movie.

Horse killer Brent Sanchez goes ballistic. He tells me to stick the $115.00 right up my (use your imagination) and he is never going to sell me another horse.

This is a guy who profits an average of twelve thousand dollars for every trailer filled with horses he sends to slaughter. Yet he is furious for not receiving his $115.00.

But hey, the old carnival pony is safe.

And so too are seven other horses who had no chance, until readers of Tbfriends came forward to help. Three of the horses rescued were from a feed lot in Wilton. Three from Vallejo. And two beautiful paint mares were removed from the feed lot near Pittsburgh. The two paint mares are dining on green grass in Clear Lake, and a giant Thank You to Stephanie Diaz for providing transportation.

A cool down on the way. We might only be a 100 degrees. Coffee is from Starbucks, and Twinkies were made by Hostess. Enjoy your school starts next week in Woodland Friday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Yes as to your opinion of Brent Sanchez. Me too: I do so hope that he enjoys his life on this earthly plane, because when he hits Hell--sooner than later, one would hope--KARMA will catch up with him, and it ain't gonna be a pretty sight.

Who is it for?
The world is filled with beauty. But who is it for? It is for you, who can appreciate and enjoy it. Just think how very special you must be that you have such joy available to you.

Dreams are for you who can follow them. Success is for you who can achieve it. Desire is for you who can be moved by it. Life is for you, who can live it.

The world that surrounds you is there for you to experience, to interact with, to build and shape. The ride is not free. It takes sincere effort on your part. It is, however, filled with the brightest possibilities you can imagine.

Just to take one breath after another, to have all this in view and within your reach, is a blessing that has no equal. It's all here for you. Feel for a moment the true depth of what you have in front of you, and you cannot help but make the very best of every beautiful portion.

Kathy Freeborn at the admissions desk here at NBC told me that this website was the best place to respond to the truly extraordinary birthday that I was given today at noon! To all of you who gave to the Barbaro fund and to me personally, I am deeply grateful. I don't claim to be a humble person (no one will argue that one too much!) but it is profoundly humbling and intimidating to be responsible for a patient that has this much love going his way. I am very grateful that there is so much concern out there for Barbaro (sorry, I cannot bring myself to call him Bobby......)and I assure you all that we all will continue to do our best for him. As you all know, he is a very special horse.
THANK YOU ALL.

well, gee. Thunderstorms are predicted tonight and for the next 6 days. I called Chiefs vet to see if I could give him a small dosage of xanax (mine to take trying to calm down him down). She said since he had his stroke she said no xanax. said to give him an extra elevel a day. I dont understand. He just creeps around and I have to help him up off the tile sometimes but during thunder he becomes superdog. able to jump through windows, able to turn tables over trying to wedge his body under them. It is my fault. first dog I have ever had that I didnt crate train. someone told me to rub a sheet of the dryer stuff that makes things non-static on him. well, thanks for listening. ###Isn't Brent the one with the "girlfriend" who is flirty and cute and will just as soon stab you as look at you? Maybe they'll "break up."

Heh heh.

###At $12K per trailer, he must have a HUGE rig that hauls a lot of horses (with ponies filling all the extra spaces). Lordy.

###Prayer to all in need.

###And btw, any of you with too much water can send some our way--yesterday it "cooled down" to 101 degrees with probably 20-some percent humidity. That may sound like nothing to those of you in really humid areas (like Houston), but for us "delicate flowers" here in the Mojave Desert who are used to "dry heat," anything over three or four percent humidity is a killer.

Anyway, we'd happily take some of your rain off your hands.

Hiya, FsOB! Joe Shelton's blogs always give one food for thought. Has Brent S. no belief whatsoever that he is accountable in a karmic sense for his actions? I am thinking of a very old song sung by Bob Dylan, "You must reap what you sow!"(which in Bob Dylan parlance translates to "you must reap what you soooowwwww"). (Please rest assured that I am not dissing Bob Dylan whatsoever, I hold him in reverence and awe.) Honestly, "there's always room for a pony or two".... I need to go upstairs and open some wine after reading that comment. Brent S. has all the morals of a concentration camp guard.

Well, at least the blue link about the Commonwealth of KY's ban on steroids raised my spirits. That is awesome news and I challenge other states with TB racing to follow KY's lead.

Everyone please have a good night and a nice weekend!

To Sandra: You might want to try to CD or audio tape that majasmom has recommended. My late, great Illya (who seems to have had Chief's temperment) really responded well to music when he was particulary stressed. May the rains pass away from Lubbock, Sandra! ####

jonna, I will check into that also. I just hate to see the sweet guy so upset. ###If we are not successful this time do we have to start all over in the 111th congress.? I guess the ones on our side will stay with us. If they think we are on their back now they havent seen anything yet.

ROBYN - eeeeek! It's raining again, this is ridiculous...wish we could share the wealth with some of our parched frens.

Please, frens ~ LIGHT A CANDLE FOR TUCKER. Gia's horse is a patient at New Bolton, suffering from a seriously blocked intestine...and while you're "in the neighborhood" Barbaro could use some candles as well.

Thank you!

Jonna,

It's 36 co-sponsors for HR6598. They were all co-sonsors of HR503. It's not in addition to anything because this is a completely new bill.
