Barbaro Update: 657

Updates are now here

Update 3890: The end of an era: Last Seattle Slew horse in training retired.

Update 3889: An update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

Update 164: What great weather we have been having! This morning was cool and the horses seemed to be enjoying some fresh air. Vicar's Tune ran at Laurel on Saturday and finished second by a neck. He just got nipped at the wire but ran a bang up race. What a cool horse. Gator Nation has returned from Colonial Downs and is as happy as ever. Simon Hobson took very good care of him in Virginia. Gator now lives in the end stall and loves to check out what's going on outside the barn. Beth (takes care of horses on other side of barn for Tim) tried to get Tim to move him to her side but Tim wouldn't budge. I stopped briefly this morning to give Gator a hug and he is just such a personality.

Who's Happy should be running this weekend at Pennsylvania day at the races (Philadelphia Park). She is doing great. Her little sister had her first piece of work on Saturday going an eighth and seems to have the same temperment her sisters have.

Sweet Ginger Brown has somehow figured out how to rip her stall matt. They are so thick I'm not sure what she did to rip it but we have now given her several toys to play with. Ginger doesn't look like a baby anymore. She has grown very tall and seems to have loads of confidence. She will race soon and I hope her confidence carrys over!

Mrs. MVP continues to train well and seems to be settling in here just fine. What a pretty girl she is.

Veiled Reference is still causing loads of trouble at feed time. She sure loves to eat. I stopped this morning to give Rajasthan a pat and a hug but he really wanted to play. He is all boy and knows how to show you. I stepped accross the isle to a more willing participant (Gator). Paris Night is training well and Robbie loves her. She is as gorgeous as ever.

We have several new horses in the barn now and I will try to get the trainer to spend a little time putting a few stats together that I can share with you. Luke continues to enjoy his days living at the farm with Timmy and Whip. He may ship in to school a few babies for a day or two.

Update 3888: A pleasant morning at Woodbine this morning. I had eight sets, five before the break and three after the break. Two of those after the break went to the gate to school. All went nicely and the weather is gorgeous. I also rode the pony "Charlie" after we were done. Much fun. This afternoon we are paddock schooling five horses in the second race, I will be going back to help out. I am now in the Jake Howard Center, on the backside at Woodbine, typing away and hanging out with the chaplain, Shawn!

Update 3887: A few internet accessibility issues yesterday afternoon. Hopefully all will be well today!

Spent a lovely lunch with Shelley from the Canadian Horse Defense Coalition yesterday then spent the evening enjoying racing at Woodbine along with good book.

The OTTB of the week winner, Carson City Kid's owner, has asked that the winnings be split between The Friends of Ferdinand and The Exceller Fund as they were both instrumental in saving Carson City Kid.

Jess Jackson has proposed Big Brown and Curlin meet this fall: Jackson: Meet Us in the Gold Cup Instead

Which was subsequently turned down by IEAH: Ball Back in Iavarone's Court: No Thanks

Please keep calling and writing both DC and your local offices.

For Canadians: Canadian Horse Defense Coalition Call to Action.

Hiya, FsOB! Thinking of the late, great Lost in the Fog as I look out my front windows this AM. The river is increasingly approaching the "white out" stage.

Alex, thanks for the blue links to the articles about where/if Big Brown & Curlin might meet to race. A very interesting rivalry betweenst the humans involved!

May each of you have a safe & productive day, Team Barbaro! Peace, RMH

#### To Deborah Anderson, you're welcome! I'll get my birthday greeting for Dr. Dean Anderson in the mail to Kennett Square Florist before this Saturday! ####

THURSDAY/SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR AUGUST 11 – 15TH

Although Congress has now recessed until September 8, Legislative Aides are still there to take your calls. Until further notice, the strategy will be to continue to gain co-sponsors for HR6598 and the plan is to start with those co-sponsors of HR503. A list is posted on the DB and Wiki with their names and we are asking that they are only called by constituents. Please do not call the names in red because they are already on board. If your Representative is already a co-sponsor of HR6598, the best way to help is to reach out and find constituents in other districts

As well as calling DC, this is a perfect time to call your Representative's local office for an August appointment. You can also check to see if your Rep is scheduled to be at an event near you. It is a perfect opportunity to get their attention and have a few words. On the DB and on the Wiki there is a Fact Sheet for you to hand out if you do get the chance to see them. (See Strategy thread)

Remember, this list will be friends of the anti slaughter legislation and there is no reason to go into detail. We’ve been asked to make sure they know that HR6598 , the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equity Cruelty Act of 2008 is taking the Title 18 approach to end horse slaughter and has been introduced by Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Although the paperwork cannot be done to co-sponsor while they are not in session, we will update this list periodically as commitments are received by the proper people in DC. When their name goes red, there is no reason to call again.

You have really set the groundwork and it seems that we’re off to the right start. We have been advised that our grassroots efforts have made a tremendous impact and YOU ALL are the reason. It is important that we now follow directions and stay focused on what has been requested of us.

Our mission is to GO RED!!!!

We are BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!!!

Thanks,

Shelley and Deb

Thursday, August 14th...

It was 105 degrees on our ranch yesterday. More heat for today, and welcome to the deepest part of summer.

You are receiving a break from my normal chatter of feed lots, ranch foreclosures, and broken down race horses. I would like to share with you thoughts from all over the world.

You see this tiny little website is changed from english into whatever language, and read by folks in Asia and Europe. Equine chat boards come in all languages. We receive e-mails from places like Spain, Italy, France, and Japan.

Many readers of Tbfriends are poor. There is no internet at home, so they click on from libraries or school.

I find it incredible how the magic of horses brings everyone together.

This came from a 13 year old girl in a place called Newfoundland: My heart is filled with horses, but I have not been lucky enough to touch one. Joe could you please send me part of a mane?

Just imagine... loving horses but never touching one. What we enjoy daily is so sought after by others from around the world.

This came from a teenage girl in England: My boyfriend gave me the choice of either him or Tony The Pony. I kicked my boyfriend out of my life. Tony The Pony would never make such demands. Tony The Pony is my everything.

This is from a girl in Ireland: Horses are directly responsible for the smile on my face each morning.

This is from a mother of 4 in Spain: I teach my children how to listen to the things horses tell us. Horses know when bad approaches. Horses know kindness, which is why some are allowed to come close, but not others. I teach my children horses are a gift from God.

This is from a lady in England: I hate it when you write about horse slaughter. I am almost ready to quit reading you.

This is from a 15 year old girl who lives in a place called Frankfort, Kentucky: My friends have no clue. How horses can lead you into happiness.

more to come

Aug 14 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

The direction of our lives is more dependent on our own thoughts and words than on what the government does and how it affects the economy. Yes, we do live in the system, but that doesn't mean we have to get down and struggle for every dollar nor fret about who will take care of us.

There's no less money in the world than there has ever been, but by design we have developed a very negative view that if everybody else is having a struggle, then we must struggle, too. It is buying into the same club that says age means sickness. No, it doesn't. Many older people are not sick at all, because they never planned to be.

What are our plans? It pays to know.

Dear Ms. Nichols

Thank you for contacting me about H.R. 503, a bill to amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes. I appreciate the opportunity to respond to your concerns.

All Americans support the humane management of animals, especially horses. I grew up riding horses on my neighbor's farm. My first job was mucking up horse stalls at 50 cents an hour, even though I barely came up to the shoulder of these giant, majestic animals. I greatly admired horses as a child, and continue to greatly appreciate their valued place in our society. Humane treatment of all animals is a very real concern to me. It is also a very real concern to the farmers of Pennsylvania's 18th Congressional District, who own and provide care for horses.

On January 17, 2007, Congresswoman Janice Schakowsky of Illinois introduced H.R. 503. This legislation would amend provisions of the Horse Protection Act of 1970 related to the slaughter of certain equines. The bill would establish a pilot program in Kentucky and New York to prohibit certain activities associated with the slaughter of horses or other equines for human consumption. H.R. 503 would require the Secretary of Agriculture to compensate horse owners for any monetary loss due to such prohibitions. Additionally, the Secretary would be required to assume responsibility for any horse in any state that is unwanted by an owner.

However, I have some concerns about the key provisions in this bill. While H.R. 503 has good intentions, the bill does not seem to solve the problems associated with horse ownership. No American wants to intentionally harm a horse, but this legislation unfairly punishes our nation's farmers and horse owners by turning their horse, an asset, into an expensive liability.

Further, we will not be able to accommodate the 90,000 abandoned horses each year if this bill is enacted. According to the American Association of Equine Practitioners, in the first year of a horse slaughter ban, nearly 3,000 new horse rescue facilities would need to be established. Nationwide, horse facilities are virtually maxed out and cannot accept thousands more horses every single year. There are not nearly enough volunteers, let alone facilities, to cover the increased needs under this bill.

Horse slaughter certainly has an unpleasant connotation associated with it, but it is a reality of the way people deal with aging, unwanted horses. Horses are currently put down in a controlled way by a captive bolt at a government-regulated facility. What is more, only one percent of the nation's horses will ever face this future.

Most importantly, this bill would impose millions of dollars of costs on America's horse owners. If H.R. 503 were enacted, farmers and horse owners will have to give up their horses in one of two ways. One, commit euthanasia by lethal injection, which costs hundreds of dollars. But after a lethal injection, horse owners are stuck with disposing the body of a thousand-pound animal which is contaminated with hazardous chemicals. These horses must be disposed of in accordance with EPA guidelines, such as being buried at a certain depth and at a certain distance from any water source. But in states like Pennsylvania, that is not even possible in some areas because there is not enough land a sufficient distance from lakes and streams.

The other primary option available to horse owners is sending their horse to a rescue facility. But at the rate of 90,000 unwanted horses per year, that would mean horse owners are forced to pay over $1 billion total in a total equine care bill in the first five years after enactment. The costs associated with such a policy would be beyond the reach of nearly all horse-owning Americans.

We ought to take the emotion out of this issue and look rationally at the policy question of how to address America's unwanted horses, of which there are thousands. This is not an issue between people who care and don't care about horses. And this is not an issue about whether horses should be killed or not, but simply how they should be killed. Yet, horse owners who can no longer provide humane care to their horses should have the right to humanely put them down. Congress needs to consider the property rights of horse owners when weighing the potential benefits for horses.

Sincerely,

Tim Murphy
Member of Congress

Don't waste your time on this one, he is a ass!!!!
He can't even get the number of the bill right, I contacted him about HR6598.

Tim Murphy is a stuipid uninformed jerk. Every day hundreds of thousands of dogs are HUMANELY put down at animal shelters all over the U.S. Here in Lubbock the shelter puts down about 22,000 unwanted dogs a year. If all the shelters drove a bolt in their heads and hang them up still alive to die people would rise up and be outraged. And can you imagine if they went sent to Europe to be dog meat steaks? You can bet congress would listen to the people then. It costs around 250.00 to put down an old sick horse and that includes pick up by the county. A person shouldnt even consider getting an animal if they cant take care of them from birth to the end of their life. ###well, maybe I should talk to the Murphy idiot as I am not in a good mood today Let me at him. ###Thunder storms last night and as usual Chief became a shaking maniac. More predicted tonight and for the next 6 nights. well. he cant help it bless his little heart.

JOE'S MAIL ETC PART II
*******************************************************
This is from a young girl in Vancouver, British Columbia: I like how you write about Eggo waffles. My draft horse Tiny likes waffles with strawberry jam.

An e-mail came from a 14 year old girl who lives in Mexico. Her letter was long and tragic, and I wish there was something I could do to help her. She finished her letter with this sentence: Horses make it all better.

This is from a young girl in Fairbanks, Alaska: Horses make it all better.

And from a girl living in poverty in Florida: Horses make it all better.

The magic of horses...

In the past I have been able to keep up with your requests. But seldom can I do this now. The most popular request is for pictures of lifetime horses on our ranch. Next is for pictures of kids who love horses. Almost daily there are new readers to Tbfriends, and you ask for morning journals from long ago. Pictures of my favorite horses. You ask for horse shoes and halters. A young girl in Japan would like me to groom Ring Of Friendship, and then mail her the brush. Cathy and I do our best to keep up with your postal mail requests. But when you ask for a certain picture to appear on the front page of Tbfriends, it is doubtful this will happen. We are talking hundreds of requests.

I love your letters. It is such a high to hear from horse lovers all over the world. I thank you for taking the time to read my morning stuff.

Joe

Lifetime horses on our ranch:

Top Left: This is Rowdy Red, and he came to us Christmas of 2006.

Top Right: Husband and wife Del Mar Cool and Barbie Doll have been together since 2003.

Bottom Left: We call him Lifer, because he is a lifetime resident on our ranch.

Bottom Right: This is Emily, and I bought her from a feed lot as a yearling in 2001.

Hi Gang.

There has been a story here on all news channels over the past few days. About a dumped mare. This man found her and waited for 20 hours until the livestock inspector showed up. The mare was starved. She is now in a rescue being nursed back to health.

Meanwhile, the New Mexico Legislature is looking for solutions to help horses that can no longer be fed or cared for by their owners. This is on the increase here just like everywhere else. New Mexico wants people and horses to have options.

Never once, in all of the broadcasts, was the 's' word used, as a reason for increased dumping, or as a solution to dumping, and no one has stepped forward screaming pro slaughter jargon.

3 cheers to New Mexico for trying to find humane solutions.

If you would like to see a tidbit of this story you can go to http://kob.com and scroll down to 'Emaciated horse rescued.' There is a pic of the mare, but just keep in mind that she is safe now and being cared for. I have never seen a horse this thin.

Nancy in ct., you are right. Our animals always love us no matter what. Chief just doesnt get scared and nervous but he tries to jump out windows and his favorite place is trying to get his 90 pound body under the end table knocking over the lamp, etc etc. However, he is almosr 13 and has developed heart problems and still has problems from his stroke. So its okay-lamps, etc can be replaced. Each day is a gift from God that I have with Chief. It is just I feel so sorry for him as he is so afraid when it thunders.

Another Chance for Horses (AC4H) - Trying to save two beautiful mares by TOMORROW...

NJ Rescue looking for home offer for two-year-old Arab/QH mix....

Posted by: FG at August 14, 2008 11:14 PM

###Yesterday I took "my three sons" (Huey, his BFF Ryan the Rescue, and my dog Snuffy) to the chiropractor. (My animals each see a chiropractor, I roll around on a tennis ball. What is WRONG with this picture?)

Anyway, Ryan had never been to the chiropractor before--certainly not for many years--but he was a different horse when she finished with him.

Horses associate certain actions with certain sensations. Ryan had been a big-time show jumper and suffered a career-ending injury, a fractured fetlock. His injury was not treated properly--some vet just said, "Oh, wrap him and rest him. He'll be fine." Wrong. He has floating bone chips "beating up the joint" and he will only ever be trail sound.

Anyway, after all the pain involved with vets and who-knows-who-else picking up the hoof, today when anyone picks that hoof up above a certain height, he acts like it pains him and he hops away and puts the foot down again. Trimming his hoof is an interesting proposition--the shoer's assistant holds the hoof down low and the shoer trims "from the side." Ryan isn't in pain because the hoof is "down low," so he's fine with the "lateral hoof trim with nippers" approach.

(The shoer says, "Well, THIS is a first.")

So yesterday Adrienne the chiropractor is trying to get Ryan to stretch his back leg out and he won't let her pick up the leg. She stopped reaching for it and got a lead rope, used it like a sling on his fetlock. He felt the rope--which was not the same sensation as someone HOLDING the ankle or asking for the hoof with their hand--and he let her stretch out that leg. He saw her asking him to lift it--but she was standing away from him and pulling back on the rope--and after about three times, he started to lick and chew.

She said, "He is hurting HERE" (pointing to his head). "He has to learn that it doesn't hurt him anymore, and I bet when the shoer comes next time, Ryan will be better about having that hoof trimmed."

###At home, Ryan was happier looking--more alert, more balanced, moving better. He wasn't "hitching" at the trot anymore, either.

Aren't these animals of ours amazing?

###I LOVE horses--and dogs too, of course. And cats and all kinds of critters.

God did GOOD work when he made horses, though.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd . . . as you know you take me to where angels walk! As Angel Dee says "It is AFFIRMED"!

Been on the run with my "paisana mama" all day and we just made it in a short time ago just in time before another huge storm hit, at least no hail this time! But this FOB is plum tuckered out at the moment!

But as always . . . . holding hands, paws, hooves... with all the Barbaro Nation!!
Love, Hugs, Prayers to all!

Hi, all.

I've been catching up on some reading (been away) and I was disappointed to see that Big Brown's connections are still sniping at Jess Jackson and Steve Asmussen (and, by association, Curlin).

I would love to see Big Brown and Curlin face one another in a major race, but at this point, I wish it could be done without giving these mud slingers a single drop more ink.

Is it just me? Does anyone else feel like Iavarone and Dutrow are twisting and misrepresenting everything Jess Jackson says and putting the foulest possible interpretation on what seemed (to me) to be quite a straightforward invitation?

I'm not happy about the decision to take Curlin back to dirt, but I'm less happy about almost everything I hear coming out of the IEAH camp, and it is coming close to tainting my remembered enjoyment of Big Brown's performances in the Derby and Preakness.

Sorry, didn't mean to editorialize. If anyone wants to straighten me out, please feel free.

Hi Lorraine,

So glad you persisted in trying to get on the board. It's always great to read your upbeat posts. I'm so glad Coby is doing great.

Wonderful news...Coby has been in my prayers and thoughts as I go about my work. The bible says to pray without ceasing and that is what I do when there is a need...I'm sure that people who pass me on the freeway wonder what is going on??? Just in case they do I wear my hands free! Once at a stop light I had a whole car load full of teenagers pointing at me and laughing. I just smiled and pointed to my hands free!!! LOL So glad Coby is A..OK !!!! Thank you Lord !!! AMEN

Barbaro needs candles

Hiy,a FsOB! Yes, that "USA Today" article is one to make one's B/P surge (not that any of us need that). And the fact that the writer would make an analogy to the awesome film "Lonely Are the Brave" really got to me. You see, my grandfather George (who had Cherokee heritage) simply adored that movie and I remember watching it with him at some point during my elementary school year. Iremember crying my eyes out as Kirk Douglas was trying to make it across the highway on his beloved horse. Well, we'll all keep fighting the good fight, as do all the wonderful people worldwide who read Joe Shelton's blog. ACN to each of you! Peace, RMH

#### To MJ: Were you impressed with the film about LITF? I'd love to read your comments and recommendation about the film. Might you share its title?
To Janice: Please know that I think of you & Denny each day. I give Nikita even more TLC than usual these days....
To Sandra: Yes, we're getting a lot of storms here on the "Right Coast" and I am getting sick of the wild rains, lightning, & thunder. Kita's not crazy about it and she's been over-licking her one paw (which is a sign of stress) as a result. Please tell Chief that he has friends in CT, OK?
To Kay: What a cool story, thanks for sharing. I am glad that Ryan experienced relief from his manipulation.
To Lorraine: Relieved that Cobra Strike continues to thrive.
To Lou Ann: I know that you've had your fill of the storms this Summer, too! Sounds like you've had a frenetic day. Wish I could send you a Manhattan or one of Brent's lime-ice gin slushies via the miracle of the Internet. ####
