Barbaro Updates: 643

updates are now here.

Update 3807: Macho Again upset Pyro in the Jim Dandy. Belmont Stakes winner Da' Tara was a victim of the early speed dual. We had a few seconds in the last couple of days in Graded Stakes at Saratoga!

Update 3806: I have reformatted the original content from the first eight weeks of Barbaro's stay at New Bolton Center.

Update 3805: Peppers Pride's attempt at a modern day record has been postoned due to the weather in New Mexico: Hurricane Dolly Rains on Peppers' Party.

Update 3804: Eight sets this morning at Woodbine, under glorious weather. Five sets before the break and three sets after the break. All told I galloped about fourteen miles. All went nice and easily, as usual. No runners today, we have had a very quiet weekend here for runners. Going into the weekend we were the leading trainer here, I am sure we have now been overtaken.

The spotlight today is on an obscure filly who may well set a record for the most consecutive wins by a horse in North America. She is undefeated. Lets all root for Pepper's Pride, the pride of New Mexico: Peppers Pride on point for run at history in Lincoln Handicap. Pepper's Pride is running in the Lincoln Handicap at Ruidoso Downs.

Update 3803: Recap of the key races yesterday:

'Marmalade Answers King George Challenge
Commentator Up to Old Tricks in Whitney
Ginger Punch Fights Off Go for Wand Foes
Forever Together Last-to-First in Diana

A nice article today in the Daily Racing Form about two racing families, that includes Erik "Superstar" McNeil: Riding colony a family affair, excerpt:

Trainer Steve Asmussen put Erik McNeil on his first winner, and the apprentice is grateful for the barn's backing. Asmussen said he sees a bright future for Erik.

"I think he's a quality person with a ton of talent that we'll all be at the coffee shop, talking about when we knew him," said Asmussen.

Update 3802: The 7yo Commentator got an easy lead in the Whitney, and then went wire to wire. A nice closing race by Student Council, but he was never going to catch Commentator.

Update 3801: Big Brown completed his final major work ahead of next weekend's Haskell: Big Brown Zips in Workout, excerpt:

"I spoke to Michelle and she said he worked unbelievable, the best work he's ever had," Iavarone said. "She couldn't get him to pull up. It was more impressive because he worked by himself."

Update 3800: An easy morning this morning at Woodbine, with only six sets. Five before the break and one after the break. It was good "working" weather too. Not too hot, a little cloudy and a little breeze. No gate schoolers today, all galloped and galloped nicely.

I managed to read today's Daily Racing Form before leaving and saw Jay Hovdey wrote another article on horse slaughter (No Place for Butcher's Little Helpers). Two days in a row! Very cool. We truly need exposure within the industry, directly to horsemen. Jay has that capability! Jay highlighted Suffolk Downs' zero tolerance policy for slaughter-bound horses, as well as the very lucky save of Champion Lodge, by Margaret DeSarno (who is very active on our discussion boards and attended the March DC event Americans Against Horse Slaughter).

Update 3799: Some excellent racing today from Saratoga, which includes three Grade 1 events and a Grade 2 stake.

In the Go for Wand, Frank Stronach's Ginger Punch looks the pick: Ginger Punch could deliver knockout in Go for Wand.

The Nick Zito trained Commentator is looking to get back to winning form after fading late in his most recent effort: Commentator returns with chance to recapture glory in Whitney. I will be rooting for Student Council if he goes.

The final Grade 1 event at Saratoga is the Diana: Wait a While back with tough assignment in Diana.

NancyinCT,
I believe it was you the other day who posted about West of Gibraltar being pulled up at Philly. Has there been any word of his condition or what happened? Perhaps Shelly A can ask for us when she has a moment? I've been stoically optimistic for good results since you posted.

MORE JOE/CATHY: (PHEW.)
*****************************************************
There were letters and phone calls from kids asking are you all right Joe? Is it true you are camping out in your driveway and eating beans from a can?

There was no fire. Our house is fine. Just because a horse is evacuated from a fire does not mean he starts fires. (Jennifer Wright would not stop laughing over this one... she tells me to name a future horse Bic)

I am not the Joe Shelton who was born in Las Vegas. I was born in Salt Lake City. There is a Joe Shelton from Las Vegas who ropes cows, and he can spit tobacco juice 40 feet into his own cowboy hat.

The only thing I now about ropes is they burn your hands. The only thing I know about cows is they give us ice cream. I tried chewing tobacco once, and it took a week for color to return to my face. Sorry, but you have the wrong Joe Shelton.

No, Cathy and I do not have ten kids living with us. We have zero kids living with us. It may often appear there are a hundred kids living on our ranch. But at the end of the day everyone goes home. And I go into the house with 6 dogs and 5 cats and one big bird. Flop on the couch in front of the 47 incher to watch yet another episode of Iron Chef America.

And even if we had ten kids living with us, I doubt I would share much. Family life is private. This is a horse rescue website. Not a kids rescue website.

I do not belong to PETA. I have never marched in front of Macys during a fur sale. If ever I get some free time, do you really think I am going to Macys?

Glad we could clear this up...

Not to knock chat rooms. I know of dozens, or maybe hundreds of horses who owe their lives to chat rooms.

We will be finding good homes for a ranch foreclosure early next week. Once again, we do the sight unseen thing. Our horse haulers are ready. Please consider taking on one more horse. I know I am annoying. Always asking for help. But another ranch bites the dust. And their horses need new places to live.

Joe

Top Left: It has been one month since I bought a preggo mare from a feed lot. The mare was not due to foal for a month, but the very next morning there was a colt on the ground. The mare is a beast. Twice she tried to kill her kid. Jodi Tuft said she has a mare who will gladly adopt the colt. This is a picture from earlier in the week. A happy family playing together. The colt from our ranch is running last.

Top Right: Our two new round pens delivered. In memory of Susie Ingersoll. Also a big Thank You to Ann & Robert.

July 26 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Over the years we forget how many times we follow the same paths. So accustomed to the twists and turns most of us could walk with our eyes closed--except for the gnarled plum that grows too close to the path.

Somewhere in our deepest memory are all the little paths, the little rabbit runs we have walked. Plans were made, fears were put aside, tears were shed, and decisions were made along these paths. When we were children, around the bend was a long way from home. Even now we sense we have strayed too far. But we are still within earshot of those paths that lead us back to everything that waits with open arms.

Before our red brothers pass to the happy hunting ground, let us wash off our war paint in the river. Let us break our arrows.

No place for butchers' little helpers
By JAY HOVDEY

DEL MAR, Calif. - Richard Fields is just your average guy from the Bronx
who wears a cowboy hat through the rainy streets of Manhattan, owns a
casino and a racetrack, and spends as much time as possible with the
horses on his ranch in Wyoming.

He is also the first racetrack owner to go out of his way to endorse a
zero-tolerance policy when it comes to horse slaughter commerce in his
own backyard, while at the same time putting teeth in a house rule that
would ban any trainer caught sending a used-up racehorse to the butchers.

Granted, the Fields racing empire is made up entirely of Suffolk Downs,
the struggling Boston track in which he purchased a controlling interest
in April of 2007. Now in his second season as majority owner, Fields has
had a positive response from local racing fans, especially for reviving
the moribund Massachusetts Handicap with a $500,000 purse and
repositioning it as a prep for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

It was Fields's announcement on the slaughter issue, though, that caught
the media's eye last month, especially in an atmosphere of heightened
sensitivities toward racehorse welfare triggered by the death of Eight
Belles in the Kentucky Derby and the graphic HBO RealSports report about
a Thoroughbred going directly from the Mountaineer Racetrack backstretch
to a Canadian slaughterhouse.

"Just because their career is done, doesn't mean you're gonna barbecue
them," Fields said last week. "When was the last time we barbecued
somebody out of the NFL?

"Historically, I have a philosophy of not wanting to give up on these
animals. I've always loved horses. I can't explain it, but I grew up
wanting to be a cowboy. Recently we've taken three racehorses from the
track to the ranch, so we've been able to watch that transition. One
went on a trail ride up the mountain to about 9,000 feet. Another is in
training as a hunter-jumper. They're happy.

"What I really wanted to do was send a signal to the industry," Fields
added. "The fellows running the backstretch know the shippers who
present a problem, and they're banned from the track. All I did was to
say, listen, guys, if you think there's a new ownership who doesn't care
about this, you're wrong. There was already a policy of zero tolerance.
I just took it to another level."

You would think opposing the sale of horses directly from a racetrack to
slaughter would be about as controversial as coming down on the side of
Mom and apple pie. It should be a relatively easy position for a
racetrack management to take, but any penalties would require diligent
investigation to enforce. Livestock auctions that feed foreign slaughter
industries continue to flourish, even in states like California where
the slaughter trade is illegal. Enterprising buyers troll the stables at
every racetrack, offering trainers and their owners an easy way to
dispose of outclassed, broken-down claimers while providing enough of a
cover story to offer deniability all around.

Even a good-faith donation of a retired racehorse can backfire. Just ask
Ron Charles, president of Santa Anita Park and chief operating officer
of Magna Entertainment Corp.

In the fall of 2006, Charles learned that his former graded stakes
winner Champion Lodge had been pulled out of a feedlot in Colorado while
on his way to likely slaughter in a facility still legally operating in
Illinois. The last Charles had heard of his horse, he'd been donated to
a high school agriculture program when he could no longer stand training.

"If he'd been healthier, he would have ended up slaughtered," Charles
noted. "He was too lame to load, otherwise he would have been on that
truck. Just an awful thought."

Champion Lodge was rescued and nursed back to health by a local ranch
owner Margaret DeSarno, a pre-vet student who somehow scraped together
the $500 asked by the slaughter shippers. Charles offered to bring the
horse back to California, but DeSarno exercised her right of ownership
and has been rewarded with a much healthier and very grateful Champion
Lodge.

"She sent me a picture of him not long ago," Charles said. "He's a very
lucky horse, and he looks great."

Luck, though, should have nothing to do with it, and Charles knows it.
He also knows that the many private, nonprofit rescue and retirement
organizations can handle only a small part of the retirement population,
and that racetracks, with their financial and political clout, should
lead the way in finding a solution.

"For years and years we have been troubled by this," Charles said. "And
at first, it seems overwhelming. But the more we talked about it, the
more you understand that it's the right thing to do. It's a matter of
working out how to do a better job on a larger, more organized scale."

For his part, Fields is already searching for his own institutional
solution to the retirement issue.

"When you get involved in horse racing, and you realize there might be a
tendency to send horses off to slaughter, you've got to do something,"
he said. "We've looked at purchasing or leasing a large farm, to do it
on a New England basis. My position is, you've got to find them a home.
That may be easier said than done. But you've got to try."

just to add, you have to meet Champ to appreciate how he's been restored to the amazing horse he is. He's one of my very favorite pocket horses

### Hay Fren Sophie's Nee,

Dear FOB frens,

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your kind thoughts. I know you understand the heartbreak we are going through. This is the first time we don't have another dog in the house and won't get another because of Den's severe disabilities. Kaiser is so special and I thank God for every moment we have him. He's been more child than dog.

I'm going to follow Barbi's advice and use a holistic approach which might buy a bit of additional time.

I appreciate your support - don't know how to get through this without it. I'm neither brave nor strong.

[end of text of HR 6598]

THERE IS A NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY jointly called for by HSUS and AAHS coming up on WEDNESDAY July 30 - I will be posting details very shortly both here and at the DB and via email to our mass distribution group.

GO GET EM!

Janice,

You're wrong--you are very brave and very strong. You have been here lo these many, many months, hearing and seeing about the awful things done to animals. You've read and learned and advocated and fought back.

You've been proactive with Kaiser from the beginning, taking him to the vet over and over. Going through the testing with him. Learning what can be done, and making decisions and DOING. You're going through Denny's process with him. Testing and learning and deciding and DOING.

That, my fren, takes strength and bravery.

There have been and will be times when you're tired or overwhelmed and you need support. That's normal. It takes wisdom to recognize that need and strength and courage to act on it.

So Jan, and all of us who have struggled or are struggling with our loved ones, be they family or a broken-down horse on the other side of the country: we are the bravest, strongest people I've ever seen.

Posted by: Susan E. at July 26, 2008 5:29 PM

Cheryl, thanks for posting that piece from DRF "no place for butcher's little helpers."

It's time for other tracks - including the one in my town, Saratoga Springs, to honor the public's overwhelming disapproval of horse slaughter by adopting a zero-tolerance policy. After Eight Belles, refusing stalls to those who allow their horses to go to slaughter would be a positive public relations move for the industry. With the evidence out that slaughter is cruel, in some cases deliberately cruel, there is no more pretending slaughtering horses to make big markup profits for offshore corporations is in any way, shape or form a humane euthanasia service. The horse slaughter pipeline will never police itself and become humane.

The race tracks have the chance to look good by banning horse slaughter before the Government does it legislatively; like drugs, taking a pro-active stance is more positive than waiting until the govermment has to do what the industry could easily take care of in-house.

Posted by: Susan in Saratoga at July 26, 2008 5:32 PM

Dear, dear Janice

what took to the place you are right now is a huge amount of strength and you are so very brave. That's what love does to us. Your strength and bravery is matched only by your dedication and loyalty to your precious Kaiser.

When we face these terrible life decisions, we draw upon inner resources and are lead by unseen forces that guide us. If you ever, even if just for one second, have a need for a safety net, we're here for you. We will not let you fall

New Hope For Horses
Call-In Day July 30, 2008

H.R. 6598, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008, was just introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives and the horses need YOUR VOICE to help pass this bill and protect them from the cruelty of slaughter.

H.R. 6598, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty, is similar to H.R. 503 by prohibiting the knowing and intentional possession, shipping, transporting, purchasing, selling, delivering or receiving of a horse for slaughter. However, H.R. 6598 takes a simpler approach, prohibiting horse slaughter under the U.S. Code that addresses certain aspects of animal cruelty and abuse (known as “Title 18”). It creates a strong enforcement mechanism to prevent killer buyers from crossing the border with truckloads of horses, but only amends Title 18.

Please contact your U.S. Representative and ask them to co-sponsor H.R. 6598, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008. There is a Congressional Hearing on Thursday, July 31, so it’s essential to call Congress on July 30th!

Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for your Representative’s office. When contacting your U.S. Representative, it’s important to remember to be polite and respectful.

Here is a suggested script for conveying all of the necessary points to the legislative staffer:

"Hello, my name is [your name] and I live in [your town]. As a constituent, I'm calling to urge my Representative to co-sponsor a new important bill: H.R. 6598, the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, to prevent horses from being cruelly slaughtered for human consumption.”

Thank you for all you’re doing to end horse slaughter! Together we can end this cruel and inhumane practice!

Thanks for helping the horses.

At Fair Hill: The training center, riding stable, event *pavilion, and near-by golf course. *(Fair Hill people have mentioned that a covered venue would be made available to us at a very reasonable fee of around $300... so I 'call' this the pavilion.)

What: Saturday:

1)Watching the morning workouts, with perhaps a glimpse of NICANOR and LENTENOR; coffee doughnuts bagels at the pavilion.

2)Horse rides for FOBs;

3)Visiting with rescue horses at the stable. Brunch available at the pavilion;

4)A fund raising golf tourney for those who may enjoy golf, (THIS might turn into a super annual event..."THE BARBARO OPEN");

5)All day long, at the pavilion; meet-and-greet-gathering of FOBs and invited celebrities; vendors' tables, finger-food-lunch munchies and soft drinks. FOB talent showcase begins...

6)Late afternoon/evening (again at the pavilion) Fund Raiser Auction. More food, (keeping it simple, this time)...perhaps pizza, nachos, salads, and deserts. FOB talent showcase continues. Additional opportunity for our guests to speak. Tributes to our beloved BARBARO.

Sunday: We meet at the track FOR THE RACES. We will watch from the stands, like real racing fans. We have purchased our block of tickets and attend together, as FOB.

We "dress-up-nice", in Lael colors, (dresses and hats for the ladies, ties on the gentlemen) ...thus establishing a classy new tradition. Then, evermore, for all the years to come, people will attend the BARBARO dressing up in Blue and Green.

Why: To carry on the legacy of our hero. To celebrate, remember, and honor BARBARO.

Woooooldn't it be Loverly?

Your FOB Fren, O

PS: WAIT A WHILE is running at Saratoga today. (Love her!)Praying for a safe trip for everyone. Very important Sunday runnings...Everybody PRAY!

O,
These are great ideas; I too, have been wondering if there is a place large enough at FH to use as a funraising site. We might even be able to get the community involved then. I have been to the Fair Hill Stable web but didn't see anything on the pavillion, of course, I might have over looked the link. Am I going to the right site?

Anyway, I think these are great ideas.

### Dear Fren Kathy,

I merely 'call' the covered venue, a "pavilion." I had herd that a covered area at Fair Hill could be made available for around $300.

There are otherFOB with more info. I am embarrassed to say that I can't remember who it was who told me. It wasn't Sharon...hmmmmm....it might have been barnmom. I will continue to sleuth.

Anyway, thanks for your comment. I would love to bypass the Delaware Park thingy all together, for our actual Celebration gathering.

Fair Hill was most welcoming to us. Del Park was not. To gather in the beauty, and peace of Fair Hill, for our private event, would insure we are welcome to be FOBs and retain control of our own agenda, as well as insure that no 'strangers' would be milling around.

Let's keep the ideas coming. Looking forward to the next gathering.

Your FOB Fren, O

Semi-good news about the NJ 10 Plus...after $180, I just couldn't give anymore. Thank you FOBs. Let's tie up the loose ends and get them safe. Remember, NBFA is involved (although, apparently hard to get ahold of).

Such good news about a new tack for the horses (tack as in sailing, but just as good for the horses...pun intended and a breath of fresh air), HR6598.

I intend on contacting my Senators the same day and demand that they submit a similar bill in the Senate. Webb, Warner(and he likes horses)...are you watching, reading? I'll be calling AND writing. Cantor is my House Rep and he is a great disappointment. But I won't go away. I will never go away until HS ends.

O,
I would LOVE to keep as many events as possible in the Fair Hill area but go to DP on Sunday for the races. we could sit in the club house or stands if we want.We ate at a great restaurant there before going to Tim's barn earlie in the week. food was good and very reasonable. Maybe have something catered. I bet Penny Woolley is a wealth of info on what resources are available.

ALL GREAT IDEAS!!!
I was thinking about the problems at Del Park from this years celebration and I really wondered IF WE DONATED ALL THE FUNDS from our auction to the rescue at Delaware Park if Del Park might be a little friendlier to US next year??? It would be a show of support for their zero tolerance slaughter stance and help their OTTB's too????

Just a thought I had at 2am one morning....probably sent to me from the BBH who seems to converse on a heavenly time clock!!! LOL

### Fren KLB (Kathy), and Susan E,

Fair Hill, and DP, Oh yes...a good two-day Celebration to come. Now we just need the 'powers-that-be' to make-it-so. Please keep the idea set forth. I really do think that, keeping it simple...keeping it FOB...and keeping it BARBARO is the key.

Also hoping that Padme would be the money-keeper this time.

Sesan E, I can't wait to go hattie shopping, but I'm sure that you will be simply loverly, in your Lael coloured scarf.

Your FOB Fren, O

PS: STEVIE WONDER GIRL, sister to STEVIE WONDER BOY, is racing at a lesser track today. She has not been so successful as her famous brother, but she IS running in an allowance race, as she DID win her last one. Pray that she will safely earn her oats today, at LoneStar Park.

Pray that they ALL run well enough to outlast the wait for the end to the slaughter pipeline.

GO BEAUTIES GO!

Fren Otherlyn,
I am sorry for my mistake. I couldn't read my own notes! Must be these old, tired eyes of mine. Many times we've seen our beloved Horses never mentioned after an incident. No Allegiance ended whatever trace of indifference there was left in me. These Heroes of the track deserve to be remembered and honored and cared for just as if they had won the Triple Crown. And I know it hurts your heart not knowing. I just finished emailing Barclay Tagg asking also.

eeeew ick, some gate-worker at Woodbine was really cussing out a filly named VICTORY ROMANCE in the WONDER WHERE STAKES a moment ago. He was roughly pushing her into the gate, growling "go on...get in there...quit yer F---in' Bull---t...go on...get in there."

The horse finally got in...she did not win. That worker 's language and attitude was clearly caught by the mic. Not a very good impression to make before many thousands of viewers.

Dear Fren Sandra and ALL,

Oooooo, good ones, Sandra. I hope that we will get one to sing. We really should have one for his race.

Because of the research dollars raised in his name; because of the horses rescued; because of the FOB efforts to end horse slaughter; because of the people who, for the sake of BARBARO's legacy, have come together to support these causes and eachother...

...maybe this could be the song we all should sing, as the horses walk to the gate at the BARBARO Stakes...

When you're down and troubled
And you need some loving care
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a Fren

If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there

Ain't it good to know that you've got a Fren
When people can be so cold
They'll hurt you, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them
Oh, but don't you let them

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a Fren

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd as you know you take me to where angels walk!
As our very own Angel Dee says, "It is Affirmed!"

Don't mean to intrude but just was taking a quick peek through the earlier posts and wow . . . . !!! All those songs you mentioned are soooooo fitting for "The Sublime One"!!!!
Sitting here singing along with all of you, and oh yes never without the tears spilling . . . .

I also still get this really clear visual of C.J. leading ALL of us in a massive musical effort to raise awareness for all equines, something like the "We Are the World" event some years back. Gosh, I can just "feel" it . . . . I wish, I wish, I wish . . . .

The mule was saved ?? Oh, I sooooo hope I saw that right!!!! Let's hope he was a wonderful new happy home!!! I love mules, donkeys ... too!!!

Holding hands, paws, hooves with the entire Barbaro Nation, and prayers and hugs going out to all (two- and four-footed) in need.

always love,
Lou Ann

###
I know its early in the a.m. - couldn't sleep.

###
Otherlyn, I read with interest your vision of the Celebrations and how they could evolve. Please e-mail me at lyn.gilbert@gmail.com.

###
My choice for the "official" song is "Simply the Best"...ever since Pamie made that BEAUTIFUL video, I've had a vision of us in Lael colors swaying back and forth singing the refrain as some of us hold up cue cards...:) For my part, I love "You've Got a Friend" or "I Will Remember You"...and my take is I want us to feel the pure joy and exhilaration when we remember Barbaro. Pure joy...but the other two songs can be used as almost like a prayer and affirmation of who we are as FOB's...that way, we can have an FOB repertoire...we can use all 3.

Why am I up so early????

Otherlyn,
I have been thinking about your ideas for the Celebration. I've come to the conclusion that you've a fantastic idea. Instead of several venues we have only (really) one, Fair Hill to coordinate with. DelPark is limited to perhaps setting aside a section of seats in the grandstand and the golf, not sure about but I think that was handled very well. What I really like is the simplicity of the basic idea, and the dignity and class we'd present at the track.

NO Horse left behind or Ever Forgotten!

P.S. Padme, I echo your "Why am I up so early?" Good to see you fren early bird.

Here's a link to an article in the Saratoga newspaper about horse slaughter. Please cross-post and consider submitting a comment online. The piece seems to give a lot of ink to the usual "unwanted horse" myth and pro-slaughter talking points.

"When Horses Finish Last" - Saratogian

When horses finish last

By: PAUL POST , The Saratogian

SARATOGA SPRINGS - A group opposed to horse slaughter for human consumption plans to protest outside Saratoga Race Course on Opening Day and each Sunday of the 2008 meet.

The group, "Friends of Equines, Foes of Equine Slaughter," says that top racing industry leaders, such as commercial breeding farms, need to take a stronger stand on the issue.

Slaughter is no longer allowed in the U.S. since three plants in Texas and Illinois were closed last year, but horses are still being exported to facilities in Canada and Mexico. A federal bill that would prohibit exports, first sponsored by former U.S. Rep. John Sweeney, R-Clifton Park, has passed in the House, but is still in a Senate committee.

"America is the greatest exporter of horses intended for human consumption," said Christine Jubic of the "Friend of Equines" group. "We want all these people who are claiming neutrality to take a stand."

About 1 percent of the estimated 9.2 million horses in America go to market each year, she said. The most famous case, which ignited strong public outcry, involved 1986 Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand, who died in a Japanese slaughterhouse. Most of the horse meat processed in U.S. plants went to Europe and Japan.

Since those facilities closed, exports to Mexico in particular have risen dramatically - 28,771 to date this year versus 18,344 in 2007.

"When horses were processed in the U.S. the plants were under USDA supervision," said Barbara Linke, of the Texas-based American Quarter Horse Association. "Horses were well-fed and euthanized properly. They were killed instantly. In Mexico, there's no oversight, no regulation. It's worse for them to go across the border."

Numerous equine rescue and retirement programs have taken steps to find productive lives for older horses, everything from mounted police to physical and mental therapy programs. In New York, a state task force has been charged with studying the issue and reporting back to state lawmakers next year.

Task force member Jack Knowlton of Saratoga Springs is also managing general partner of Sackatoga Stable that produced 2003 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide.

"The very, very large preponderance of horses that go to slaughter aren't race horses," he said.

He credited most thoroughbred breeders and owners with leading the fight against horse slaughter.

Other prominent groups either support slaughter or have refused to take sides. The Washington, D.C.-based American Horse Council is a major lobbying group that represents various equine interests - racing, breeding, recreation, show horses and veterinarians.

"We are neutral on the (horse protection) bill because we have members on both sides of the issue," spokesperson Kathie Luedeke said.

The country's largest organization of equine veterinarians, the 10,000-member American Association of Equine Practitioners, has come out against the horse protection measure.

"Our decision to oppose the federal legislation is not because we think slaughter is the best option," said Sally Baker of the Kentucky-based group. "The number of unwanted horses is so large, we don't feel there are enough rescue and retirement programs to absorb them all. We're concerned about an increase in abuse, neglect and starvation, which we've already seen since the plants closed last year.

"We really think that horse processing is symptomatic of a much larger problem, the unwanted horse population."

The situation might only get worse because of the increasingly high cost of feeding and boarding a horse. In some Western states, there have been reports of people simply turning horses loose in state parks or open range land.

"They're domestic animals, so that's actually more cruel and inhumane than sending them to processing plants," Linke said.

The Quarter Horse Association is also against the federal bill.

"It doesn't address what will happen to the 90,000 to 100,000 unwanted horses if they don't go to slaughter houses," she said. "It's not that we're pro-slaughter. The bill doesn't address what options horse owners would have. There are no federal funds available."

Equine rescue and retirement groups hope to find enough uses for horses that slaughter won't be needed any more.

"Obviously that would be a perfect world," Linke said. "But horses become unwanted for lots of reasons. Especially now, with the economy, we're just afraid that the unwanted horse population is going to continue to grow."

WOW how I love the thoughts of those Native American Elders - and that they are in my life and consciousness by virtue of FOB Harriette Brillianthawk is yet another example of The Barbaro Effect. (Get off the soapbox, CJ . . .)

July 27 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from HarrietteBrillianthawk

The human race needs a loving hand. Not a permissive hand and not a hand that strikes out.. But it needs a hand that soothes and leads and does everything without a selfish motive.

Our condition is a result of disobedience. Every rule has been broken, every law, written and unwritten, has been ignored. It has all made for imbalance, injustices, broken hearts and less stability,

Where is the loving hand? It is our own. It begins with the individual who is willing to let others exist, to forgive and to be forgiven. No doubt the bad will get worse, the good will get better---and all in all it is a personal decision.

By peace our condition has been improved in the pursuit of civilized life.

Thanks for the Saratoga article, Susan.

There are a few errors in it, like America being the #1 horses to slaughter nation. I believe China has that distinct "honor".

Good Sunday Morning Gang.

I vote for 'Simply The Best' as well. I tear up a bit when I hear Tina Turner singing it. What a life that woman had. (I wish I had her legs!)

Ruidoso had some terrible flooding due to Dolly remnants. Bridges washed out, one person missing, homes lost. I can imagine what the tracks look like.

May the heavens watch over the hairy and the almost hairless.

Posted by: MargieinNM at July 27, 2008 3:50 PM

Re: Ruidoso flooding. The Rio Ruidoso is over 11 feet above flood level. They just stated on the news that people are trapped due to wash outs. The police don't want any traffic on the roads. They can't handle anymore rescues. The area has never been flooded to this extent.

New Mexico wash outs are horrid. I was 'approached' by a 10' wall of moving mud once. After the initial shock, I backed up and high tailed it out of that canyon.

May God take care of the people and animals in Ruidoso today. They are still getting flooding rains.

WOW....that is so scary wierd !! Together Forever winning the Diana.Princess Diana and Dodi are literally together FOREVER......

Congrats to Together Forever for a spectacular WIN!!

Good Sunday morn to ebberbuddy.!!!

To ALL fans of the great and wonderful "Way To Oz" who raced at Del Park in the very first Fans of Barbaro Race and that would include myself and our very own Angel Dee....

I had a very lovely email from the owner/trainers of "Ozzie".Ozzie is currently being raced at Mountaineer Park where there has been much controversy since the NBC Special about the sending of horses to slaughter etc.

I'm overjoyed and relieved to report that "OZZIE"is safe and loved and appreciated and will be retired to their farm sometime soon where he will be retrained or re-homed.They have a lovely farm for their horses with lots of riding trails etc which the horses love.It was a relief and sooo nice to read that Ozzie's people are leading by example!Alex always tells us that we should not categorize ALL just because a FEW ARE BAD !!!

Isn't it refreshing to know that there are SOME at Mountaineer that "GET IT" ??!!! There's HOPE for ALL ???

Incidentally I also received a lovely photo of Ozzie and he looks sooooo happy! He has sparkly happy eyes just like our Champ.I understand he also has a few endearing idiosyncrasies like our beloved John Henry had!!!

One more thing...Ozzies people frequent our site so ShelleyA is CORRECT...MANNERS MANNERS MANNERS!!
WE never know who is HERE with US????

Have a wonderful day...I think Ozzie is racing somewhere today...I will pray that he comes home safely ....only a few more races and I'm sure he'll have earned his retirement!!!

HUGS and love..Thanks to the BBH for keeping an eye on things!!!

They are the biggest abusers of equine overpopulation on this planet!!!! IF they TRULY WANTED to be helpful ...they would set an example to their members and start educating members on breeding etc.!!! They would stop the ridiculous breeding incentives etc etc etc!!!

WHY would ANYONE listen to their perspective on anything equine???? They CLEARLY DO NOT HAVE A CLUE !! EDUCATION...EDUCATION...EDUCATION !!!!!

It is ALL I can do to hold my tongue right now where THEY ARE CONCERNED....so many things I COULD SAY!!!!

JOE FOR DUMMIES;;;;;;LIKE ME: LOL
**************************************************
Sunday, July 27th...
A long day ahead, and the list of chores stretches all the way to Interstate 5. Renewed energy. Hard to explain, but the batteries are charged. Inspiration comes from a 7 year old, and from a 17 year old.

This has been a week of 19 hour work days, and sadness which comes from horses losing their homes. Watching families who are forced to give up their lifetime dreams. Ranch foreclosures is like the end of the world.

A person can get lost in the muck. All you see is dark clouds, yet the day is bright and sunny.

And then when you need it most, a 7 year old and a 17 year old remind you what is most important.

Pictures below on the top row explain this better than I ever can.

Top Left: Emma is 7, and at our front gate with her family Emma says she wrote me an e-mail many months ago. I replied, and now here she is with brothers and sisters and her mom Tammy. Emma tells me she has never ridden a horse. Say hello to Limo. While I am leading Emma and Limo around, Emma talks about her summer vacation. One more month until school starts. There was a day when she went to a water slide park. Three times Emma went down the big slide.

And then boom, just like that, a week of sadness is lifted. Imagine being a kid again. Long hot summer days. Swimming pools. Your first ride on a horse. Watching the calendar, knowing school starts soon, trying to make today better than yesterday. Imagine the freedom of choices.

Picture Below On The Top Right: This is Kelly, and we have talked on and off since Kelly was 15. Kelly is now 17, and horses are her passion.

Not to sound sappy, but when inspiration knocks you gotta open the door. From Kelly I learned how when you focus on horses, horses repay the favor. Kelly also taught me about time management.

I waste way too much time. Even on a 19 hour work day. I could do much better with my time management.

Focus on horses, and horses repay the favor. Earlier this week it was my pleasure to meet an older morgan mare. She was losing her home of 12 years. I thought I would throw her into the sight unseen pool. Lots of nice families accepting sight unseen horses into their homes. But this morgan mare has physical problems. She needs an extra two hundred dollars or so a month to take proper care of. Daily meds, daily special feeds, extensive farrier work. Her owner said we should just put her to sleep.

But then a lady in Vacaville phoned. She would like an older mare for her lonely older gelding. I told the lady about the morgan mare, and the monthly costs which come with her. The lady said okay, she would like to give it a try.

Well the morgan mare has fit in just fine with her new boyfriend. There is a neighbor girl who comes to groom and pass out treats. The morgan mare has never been so clean. She has been bathed and groomed five days in a row.

The neighbor girl adores the morgan mare. And she told the lady this is it, I finally figured out what I want to do with my life. I want my life to be with horses.

Yesterday the neighbor girl began her first day of employment with a riding academy in Davis. For now she can only work on weekends. A big Thank You to my friend Ryan who helped this girl find a job.

Focus on horses, and horses repay the favor.

A big Thank You to both Emma and Kelly for turning my week around.

Joe

Peppers Pride on point for run at history in Lincoln Handicap

PEPPERS PRIDE
Eugene O'Neill/Coady Photography
by Mike Curry

New Mexico-bred star Peppers Pride is on target for her shot at Thoroughbred racing history on Sunday, when she will try to set the modern North American record of 17 consecutive victories in the $55,000 Lincoln Handicap at Ruidoso Downs.

Trainer Joel Marr said the five-year-old Desert God mare breezed four furlongs in :52.20 on Monday at Ruidoso. The Joseph Allen homebred is unbeaten in 16 career starts.

“She breezed well,” Marr said. “We didn’t ask her to do too much. It wasn’t a stiff work. She did pretty much what we wanted her to do. The track was a little heavy and slow, and she galloped out afterwards really well and got something out of it. I think we’re ready to go.

“We had planned [to breeze her] earlier, but the track condition kept us from it.”

Marr said the only factor that could prevent Peppers Pride from contesting the Lincoln is track condition. She has made each of her 16 starts on tracks rated as fast.

Peppers Pride tied the record of 16 consecutive wins held by Citation, Cigar, Hallowed Dreams, and Mister Frisky with a two-length win in the Russell and Hellen Foutz Distaff Handicap on April 26 at Sun Ray Park. Marr said Peppers Pride’s will to win sets her apart from other horses he has trained.

“It’s her desire, she has a huge heart,” Marr said. “There have been times when it could have gone the other way. But she just finds whatever it is, whatever that thing is that great athletes possess, every time she has been able to find the finish line first. Her last out, a lot of horses would have given up after being bumped on the first turn, pushed ten wide, and falling ten lengths behind the leader. But she doesn’t know quit.”

Peppers Pride opened her five-year-old season with her second win in the Sydney Valentini Handicap at Sunland Park. She won the six-furlong Lincoln Handicap last year on the Zia Festival card. Peppers Pride was assigned high weight of 127 pounds for the Lincoln Handicap, conceding at least 11 pounds to her challengers.

Marr said Peppers Pride thoroughly enjoys her job and it shows when she hits the track.

“She’s very aggressive on the track. I wouldn’t say she’s hard to train, because she loves to train, but she’s also one that you have to train often and watch her,” he said. “She’s very well broken, she does everything right, and she’s professional, but she’s aggressive on the track. When she gets out there, she knows what it’s about and knows what she wants to do.”

A full sister to stakes winner Desert Pride, Peppers Pride is out of the stakes-placed Chili Pepper Pie mare Lady Pepper. Peppers Pride's sire, Desert God, is out of Blush with Pride, dam of Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour. She has amassed 12 stakes wins, all in races restricted to New Mexico-breds and $861,665 in purse earnings.

“Of course, when we started out that was not in the plan to break any kind of record or tie and record. It was not until after we won ten or so that anybody even mentioned it,” Marr said of equaling the record of Citation and Cigar. “With each subsequent race, it has been more and more pressure probably. It has definitely been fun, and I’m very grateful to have her. I never will have another one like her I’m sure. It’s also been a couple of years of stress.”

Dear Pepper's Pride, you will get your chance next week end. You are in my heart.

Darn Dolly!!!!! Half my windows leaked due to the rain last night. Mud everywhere. Lucky would not even do his du du this morning because of the slop.

I just got done kicking myself for an hour. For the SECOND time now my New Mexico Pick 3 Lottery numbers came in. I did not play this week due to meager funds. The winning number, which I usually play 6 days a week, was 488. Last month I didn't play one night and my numbers paid $160. Last night I would have won $500. I'm off now to buy this week's tickets. I don't care about my budget. I will continue to play 488. It seems to come in once a month.

That $660 would have bought 110 bales of hay in these parts. Or rescued 2 horses. I am so mad at myself.

Maribel.....This tribe IS SIMPLY THE BEST.

Pennsylvania's Susquehanna Valley was severely hit about an hour ago with massive hail, wind, etc., very sudden storm. Have seen quite a few storms in my day but nothing like this.
Praying, hoping all FOBs (two- and four-legged) in these parts are safe, communications still somewhat limited.
We are south of York and just north of the Mason-Dixon (Maryland) Line.
"Ms. Annie" (Mom) and I are fine. Just checked all the windows and no broken glass but there is about seven inches of walnut-sized hail on our porch roof and large sections of the yard are solid white with it. Now there is steam coming off the ice as it is also horridly humid here.
Neighbors have massive tree damage.
Just saw the tux kitty ("mystery kitty")who visits my flower gardens and she appears to be fine - I had seen her getting a drink just before the storm hit. Praying all pets and their peoples are safe.

Love to all, and prayers going out to all in need.

Love you, Barbaro, always!!

Hugs, Lou Ann

OK, this might seem pretty far "out there" but...heeeeere goes:

Is there any way that we might market horse-pucky? I am thinking that it is one of the best known rose fertilizers, so-o-o-o-o why not dry it and package it and market it...for charity horse causes...as official FOB Horse Pucky?

There is certainly plenty to go around. We might even get some famous trainers to donate from their barns, and market it by the names of the horses who "donated to the cause."

It's just a little seed of and idea, but, who knows, with the right kind of 'fertilizer,' perhaps a 'harvest' will come. Yes?

### WARNING! Non-Horse post to follow:

Dear Frens, Please forgive this deviation from our main topics here on the comments board. But, I am wondering if anyone might be able to answer some non horse-related questions for me.

As many of you already know, last August I discovered that my husband of 24 years, was in an adulterous relationship with another woman. So, in September, I filed for divorce.

My divorce is going forward very slowly. It is quite a tangled mess. I am most perplexed, however, by the fact that I am in the hole to the tune of several thousand dollars to my attorney, and I have yet to see the judge.

I have sent lots on information, to my attorney, I have gone to the courthouse on four separate occasions. His office has twice initiated motions-to-enforce, which my husband simply walked away from.

We attended a mediation session, but my husband and I both agreed that the $1300 process was to expensive, and an exercise in futility. We were supposed to attend a settlement hearing, but, on the day of the hearing, my attorney simply left me waiting in the hallway while he and my husband's attorney met in private. Then he came out and strongly suggested arbitration. We took a 5 minute walk from the courthouse to his office, and in that 5 minutes, I was given to believe that arbitration would be the best way to go. (My attorney wants to get this cleared from his desk ASAP).

Now I find out that the arbitration attorney's fee is $300 per hour...and this includes the time spent at reviewing the briefs, as well as actual session time. Also, the arbitrator's decision is more binding that would be a judge's decision.

This does not feel right to me. Nearly a year has passed since I filed, and all I am doing is running up fees to pay three separate attorneys.

Please does anyone know anything about how this is SUPPOSED to work? I don't know what to do. I have not yet signed the OK to go to arbitration, but last Friday, I received a notice from my attorney, saying that the judge has ordered arbitration in lieu of a trial. I am not at all sure if my attorney is doing right by me, or if I have put myself into a financial hole just to line his pockets...I am very afraid, and am all alone in this.

Please e-mail me, or call. I need help.

Thanks, Your FOB Fren, O

Hay, Lou Ann!!!

Skies are clearing but am not totally sure the storm system is gone...saw the forecast for tonight and there are more storms forecast...but for now the girls and I are fine...am watching "The Two Towers" and then will keep on getting a press release ready.

I met a local author last week and he gave me a wonderful book about how authors can market their books...he has written 11 of them and he knows whereof he speaks...he has all kinds of resources listed and gives examples of press releases and other resources...if anybody wants to know more about him or his website, go to www.mowday.com. His name is Bruce Mowday and he and his wife live in the area. He's kind of a mentor for me and I am blessed to have met him (in the post office - of all places...).

###
Don't know where the storm system is now...prayers for all those in its path...and prayers for the flooding in Ruidoso.

STRATEGY FOR MONDAY JULY 28

Many of you have contacted us with your concerns about strategy being posted on this board. We think you may be confused. All personal and sensitive messages are conveyed through private email via state groups and other groups. Many of you may not realize that if you are not involved with one of these email groups.

Our announcement last week was done in conjunction with HSUS and never revealed any information that was not meant to be passed on. Actually, if you paid attention, you would have noticed that details of the Bill were posted by someone else while we were still waiting for approval. For those of you who think we are giving the opposition a “heads up”…..Their people are camped in DC and know what’s going on before any of us!!

We do NOTHING without it being carefully thought out and discussed with the appropriate people who give us direction. While we appreciate your feedback, a few of you have been rude and thoughtless with your comments to us. Some even accusing us of not wanting the legislation to pass!! We will continue to do what we’re asked to get this legislation passed and to save our horses. However, we will not continue to take abuse.

The strategy for this week will be to
