Barbaro Updates: 641

updates are now here.

Update 3795: Thoroughbred Brief proposes a working relationship between the racing industry and horse sports industry to help our thoroughbreds transition from one to the other: The Thoroughbred Manifesto: a Proposal.

Update 3794: Interesting video as industry professionals speculate as to why the average number of starts for a racehorse has steadily declined. A few point to our liberal medication rules, yet don't seem to make the case as to why that would be. The final speaker makes a couple of interesting observations: Losing the Iron Horse? - Part 1

Update 3793: This morning was one of those perfectly pleasant mornings at Woodbine. While the sun was not out, the weather was pleasant and all the horses went nicely. We had eight sets. Five before the break and then three after the break which all went to the gate for some gate schooling. Very pleasant.

We have a couple of runners this afternoon, and as is customary, the state vets came to inspect them. I have to say the checks they perform here at Woodbine are pretty thorough. Flexing joints, watching them jog up and down the shedrow. And they do scratch horses. Ours will be running this afternoon.

Update 3792: Yesterday was opening day at Saratoga. We had a nice winner in the stakes race, but not with the horse most expected: Jardin Surprises in Schuylerville Opener.

Please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! TGI Thursday. I am running late. We had huge storms in CT & RI yesterday afternoon and this morning as well here on the banks of Thames. I overslept due to a problem with the primary alarm clock. May each of you be safe today and let's hope the Congressional impasse will break imminently. Peace, RMH

#### To Laurie H.: Loved hearing about Bart and the Rice Crispy Treats and the corn nuts!
Please, everyone, if you have a moment to spare and can go to Erin Brennan's site on Caring Bridge, please do so. Anne is seeking ideas for ways to honour what would have been Erin's 8th birthday on 08/05/08. Thanks! ####

Also, famblee, if you can, please help New Jersey rescue (on the rescue board - sorry, I don't know how to "blue link") get these guys out - they have homes to go to, but cannot until bail is raised.

PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!!!!! ANYTHING IS APPRECIATED!

Alex I would love to hear your thoughts on this?

My prayers for all FOBs and those they love.
Thanks to all for the good wishes and prayers. Den must have suregery for a defibrillator/pacemaker implant. Of course he did his standard "I don't think so". I'm sure family discussions will change his mind about that. Maybe news about Kaiser today. Trying to hold myself together. I'm not a very brave person. Kaiser has been our child for the almost 10 years we have him. I know you all understand that kind of relationship.

###Joan, do you know fund total needed for the NJ horses? I lived in Chincoteague many, many years ago and know about the ponies there. Also, (sorry for ignorance) where/how to make donations for them? Do not have PayPal. I agree, we need to show the Black Farmers Association we will be good partners in these efforts.

Could someone please tell me why they think this rescue is not generating the interest and assistance these people need? I'd like to send money, but don't really understand what is going on. Can someone help like "Midknight" does so well for other efforts...what am I missing here?

Please help. And don't even know if it's too late.

An inspiring story on the BestFriends website about Riley--a rescue horse who was recently fitted with a prosthetic leg and is adapting well. I'm blue-link challenged, but you can visit www.bestfriends.org, page down the right side under "Guardian Angels" and click on Riley's picture to read her amazing story.

### In more Best Friends news, the second season of "Dogtown" will debut September 5th on the National Geographic Channel. The first episode will be a 2 hour special dealing with four of the 22 pit bulls from Michael Vick's "Bad Newz" kennels that are now in the care of Best Friends and known as the "VICKTORY DOGS".

Always amazing, inspirational work on behalf of animals going on at Best Friends!

GOD BLESS JOE. AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HE HAS TO SAY.....
****************************************************
Thursday, July 24th...
Okay, we seem to be entering a new chapter. Helping ranches who are closing down find homes for their horses. Since Tuesday I have been contacted by 6 other ranches. They are shutting their gates, and their horses must go. One ranch is in Oregon, and I am unable to help. Another ranch is in the central valley of California, which is a 4 hour drive for our haulers. We might be able to help.

Since Monday we have found homes for 43 horses who were bound for auctions, or feed lots. We are going to take a day to catch our breath. Neglected chores must be attended to. I will work out details with ranch owners who are closing their doors. Soon more horses will be available to our readers.

I love stats. From the 43 horses who found new homes since Monday, 72 percent were taken by people who have adopted from us in the past. The same nice families who continue to help horses. I realize the current horse market is down the toilet. And the last thing a family needs is another horse to feed. But somehow they make it work.

This is from a teenage girl in Walnut Creek, California: I have taught my parents to not view others differently because of their race. God made us all different for a reason, and who are we to question his decisions? I feel the same way about horses. My expensive event barn with expensive horses is no better than feed lot horses who are desperate. The downfall of America is because we elevate the rich over the poor. We elevate expensive show jumpers over hungry saddle horses. I am more than happy to take one of your going out of business ranch horses. I will love him like he cost a million dollars.

This is from a lady in Pleasanton, California: I want my daughter to know there is more than malls, fashions, and ipods. I want her to feel the anguish of others, and to help when she can. I have taught my daughter about the spirit of all living things. We are more than happy to take one of your needy horses. He will have his own paddock. Thank you for this opportunity.

I have the best job in the world. I get to meet the nicest people.

And now neglected chores must be attended to. Delicious coffee is from Peets, and Twinkies from the Hostess store might be 30 years old. Enjoy your hot Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses. Simon & Garfunkel on the oldies station...

Joe

All pictures below are by request.

Top Left: This is Imagine on the day he came to us from Animal Control.

Top Right: This is Imagine today. Last weekend, just for fun, 12 year old Allison Martino hopped on Imagine bareback. He took her all over our ranch. Imagine has become a big pet. He is the first to greet us at the far south gate.

Bottom Left: This is Judy, a recent purchase from a feed lot. Judy is a thoroughbred, and she foaled in February. The foal was weaned, and then Judy was sold for slaughter.

Bottom Right: We found out her correct name is Summer City. Yesterday I told you it was Some City. She is 3, and comes to us from a race track. Summer City is unique for us. Sound and sweet.

Posted by: jonnagrey at July 24, 2008 3:52 PM

NEXT TIME:

I am so sorry to put this out there, but you know, I have the patience of a gnat. And here i am, some 12 hours since THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT was made that SOMETHING IS HAPPENING.

PLEASE: the end of horse slaughter is way beyond
important to me. This last two +years--like Daryl and countless others:YEP--this work has literally made me ill...in lots of ways.

I understand why people leave. It's called self-preservation. And perhaps the films that are locked in my head of slaughter affect some people less...but for me, I just can't do this right now.

Whatever IT is. And it BETTER be getting one of these frakking bills on the respective floors or I think I'll sign off for a while.

There is waaay more enough stuff going on in my life that may soon eclipse my work for the horses..And I love them, so dearly. Our Village may reinstate their stalk on getting GCNY out of Liverpool. And then: my life caves in on itself...
I may have to move. I may be told I have to give yup some of my dogs. That I can't do rescue and adoption anymore.

(I had a wonderful friend who put out this caveat: If you ARE what you you DO, when you DON'T, then you AREN't.)

So please, next time--and i hope there isn't a next time--i hope that this is it.IT--could you all just give it time till you know more...before you hang it out there like the proverbial carrot.
I know you're all excited, but come on:

Alex isn't even talking about "this..."

I hope most of you GET IT. If you don't, email me personally--Cheryl Jones, that'd be you--and don't clog the ABR with your stuff against me.

I love my FOBs. And I will always honor Barbaro and my precious White Mare, and many of you have become dear comrades, but like BarbAZ and Lynee and many of the lurkers... I'm getting close to that point of silence myself.

I am so sad to be writing this...

NEW JERSEY HORSE SAVE....

Please go to the D/C and see if you can lend a hand, home, computer update skills, number counting, whatever. The horses seem to still be there...at least to my knowledge.

THIS IS A BIG DEAL! This is the first formal NBFA involvement on the rescue board that I know of. Let's show them we appreciate their assistance and the stand the have taken to help the horses.

It's a bit complicated, but worth the effort, if it saves 1 horse from hell. Tell you honestly, I'm confused as to who is the leader there...although some seem to have stepped in to help shore this effort up. And they are doing a great job.

I just think it is so important to facilitate this NBFA involvement.

Posted by: Cheryl Jones, one of the Americans Against Horse Slaughter at July 24, 2008 4:59 PM

PLEASE??

If I'm having trouble finding it, probably others are as well

Posted by: Cheryl Jones, one of the Americans Against Horse Slaughter at July 24, 2008 5:10 PM

It appears that these horses are the left over horses from a save that was conducted on July 4th. Leftover horses in the sense that the intended rescues have been removed and placed, but nothing is left to help the horses that appear to still be in the lot. It gets a bit confusing since it's still on the original July 4th thread....I asked that a new thread be started.

And since I'm blue linked impaired, I can't post it here.

But we are making progress....still need more.

WHILE WE'RE ALL WAITING -

EXTRA THURSDAY July 24 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS list NOW posted below and at this DB Thread:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=26756.1

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their 2008 WHITE PAPER are at the DB Thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that all three former horse slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently; and Cavel (Dekalb IL) lost its appeal and the US Sup Ct just refused further review. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Thursday 7/24/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

extra Thursday 7/24 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS) -

HS History - All three of these Reps cosponsored and voted YES on HR 503 in the 109th Congress - and they all voted YES on HR 249 in the 110th Congress. As horsefriendly a bunch as we could get!

IMO - THANK them all for having voted YES on HR 249 - but remind them that 249 only applies to WILD equines and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to end export.

Thank them all for having cosponsored and voted YES on HR 503; use their prior support of the slaughter ban bill when urging them to cosponsor now. "You cosponsored before - WHY NOT NOW?!?!?! DO THE RIGHT THING AGAIN."

IF you're done with today's ABR/AAHS Instructions & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to post 2 of this Thread for a good alternate target list of Senators compiled by AWI/SAPL.

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! Go get 'em.

July 24 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Even in July there are lovely cool places in the woods. May apples spread their leaves to shade the tiny blooms of sweet william, and moss, rich and green and cushiony, gathers in the rocky areas.

Most wet-weather springs have drawn back into the earth and an occasional trickle waters the wild plum and invites the goldfinch to bathe. It is a haven on a very warm day for both red and gray squirrels to romp and play---but not with each other as they are natural enemies.

Get away from the rise in temperatures and let mother nature soothe your brow with songs of the meadowlark and the field sparrow. It is good medicine---very good medicine.

What I say, I want you to take to heart.

Re: Losing the Iron Horse. Could it be that longevity is shortened due to pain masking drugs? Making the animal run when it shouldn't be running? When a human is injured, it's meds and rest. I don't believe horses are given that same option, sometimes. Pain is nature's way of telling us to protect and rest the injured area. And maybe it is really the time to look at steroids and the effects it has on all systems, specifically the skeletal system.

Off the soap box. And still waiting.

Alex,
Great link on tying in the racing and post-racing worlds for the good of the TB!
Interesting story on the Iron Horse. I just finished the book, Thoroughbred Legends: Forego. It had an interesting item about how they would hose his feet 2-3 hours a day, and how it helped him overcome his soreness and unsoundness. Is any of that still done with modern racehorses?

Posted by: Barbara, NC at July 24, 2008 8:51 PM

###Jonna, I know how you feel about IT and the proverbial CARROT ON THE STICK--it's like waiting for a Christmas that never comes (think Groundhog Day, the movie). HOWEVER, to me this entire adventure (for that is indeed how I have come to think of it) has been like reading Joe and Cathy's morning journal (even though Cathy has said over and over she will NOT NOT NOT NOT fill in when Joe is absent, I STILL think of them as one--more like JoeandCathy rather than "with spaces").

Anyway, I think of our whole escapade like reading the TBFriends' journal. Some days I laugh out loud. Somedays I go "Awwww." Other days, it's "OMG, who on EARTH could have DONE this to that lovely horse." And other days, I am in tears.

But each day is new, each set of Joe's pictures fills my heart. Each day is another page of this stupendous adventure. (The Risque Yodeler filly who spent a couple of days with Joe is my Huey's "niece"--her blaze is wider, but they resemble one another). Small world and the chance to read a nice thing about MY family ;o)

###I was a teacher all my working life. I have read that teachers are, by their very nature, positive people. (I always thought I was like the kid digging through a stall filled with, as Joe and Cathy would say, "poop on top of poop," just SURE there had to be a pony in there somewhere. I never was one of those "there's no such thing as a bad kid" teachers because, frankly, some of the kids exhibited NO redeeming features and went on to prove me right, sitting as they are now, in prison).

HOWEVER, my real TRUE self--pragmatic and a realist--remains tempered and balanced by the gut feeling that something GOOD is going to come from even the most WORSTEST stuff that we face (and believe it or not, I did teach English ;o).

And I am "hanging in there" waiting for whatever IT is to be told, while reading Joe and Cathy's journal faithfully each day, reading Alex and Tim and Fugly and all.

So many good things await--because so many GOOD PEOPLE are working where they feel they can do the most good to help the horses, the dogs, the children, the jockeys, the backstretch workers ... the list just grows and grows.

###Hang in there, JONNA ;o) Find something positive and fun to focus on that settles your mind and makes the time fly by.

###Heck, I've been "hanging" like this for years.

St. Louis here, standing by. We'll hear when we hear. Getting legislation passed is a time-consuming, creaking process most of the time. It is the nature of the beast.

We, the advocates for animals, know and understand the nature of the beast far better than our opponents. They want money, fast money. We want systemic change. The animals are patient and adaptable. We, their legislative surrogates, can be no less.

I'm in a Zen mood. The bill is already passed; envision it. We simply have to keep moving forward.

****
Jonna---sounds like you've got a lot of crap descending on you at once. If something comes up in your town re bans on dog rescues, or keeping dogs, remember where you're at. There's an army here on this site and we mobilize quickly and effectively. We've done it before for other animals.

I've personally stepped back from the board on several occasions for a few days, or a week, when I got overwhelmed by the ongoing inhumanity towards animals, or something in my personal life, or both. It helps. You gotta do what you gotta do. Helping animals is like travelling with a little kid when a plane loses altitude during a flight--you've got to put your own oxygen mask on first before you can save the kid.

********
My thoughts and prayers are with the Brennans; Janice, Denny and Kaiser, Barb M, Over Enough and Nala, Daryl, Donna and Peanut.

*************************

Cheryl Jones, my dear, funny, brilliant, talented fren, thank you for being here every day to rally the troops.

And my thoughts and prayers are with EVERYONE in this famblee, posting or not, visible or not. Everyone here has gone through personal changes and tough times at some point since we've started our journey. We have always helped each other and we can do what we need to do with grace, class, and kindness.

THIS IS WHAT WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR FROM HSUS...................WE MUST NOW URGE CONGRESS TO CO-SPONSOR HR6598

Conyers-Burton “Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008”

Horse Slaughter is Inherently Cruel. The Conyers-Burton bill addresses the inherent cruelty in allowing the slaughter of our horses for human consumption. The inhumane transport over long distances combined with the horrifying methods of killing and difficulty of stunning equines prior to dismemberment is unacceptable to the American people and must be halted.

The Need is Urgent. Texas and Illinois shut down foreign-owned horse slaughterhouses in 2007 under state law, so now all American horses are shipped even longer distances to Mexico or Canada for slaughter. The same numbers of horses have been slaughtered so far this year, indicating that the problem is still serious and requires a federal solution.

It is Time for Congress to Finally Pass this Ban. Past floor votes on horse slaughter bans in the House and Senate demonstrate a strong, bipartisan desire to prohibit horse slaughter for human consumption (House vote September 7, 2006 on H.R. 503 was 263-146; House vote June 8, 2005 on Agriculture Appropriations amendment was 269-158; Senate vote September 20, 2005 on Agriculture Appropriations amendment was 69-28).

The Conyers-Burton Bill is Similar to H.R. 503. Operational language of the Conyers-Burton bill is similar to H.R. 503, prohibiting the knowing and intentional possession, shipping, transporting, purchasing, selling, delivering or receiving of a horse for slaughter. The Conyers-Burton bill is a simpler approach, prohibiting horse slaughter under Title 18. It creates a strong enforcement mechanism to prevent killer buyers from crossing the border with truckloads of horses, but only amends Title 18. It does not include the authorization of $5 million for the Horse Protection Act found in H.R. 503. This bill only affects horses going to slaughter.

Title 18’s Animals, Birds, Fish and Plants Chapter Covers Horses. Title 18 has a chapter on Animals, Birds, Fish and Plants including prohibitions related to injuring wildlife on refuges, importation of certain mammals, the use of aircraft or motor vehicles to kill wild horses or burros, depictions of animal cruelty, and prohibitions on animal fighting.

Title 18 Approach Limits Prosecution to “Knowing” and “Intentional” Standard. The intent (mens rea) standard in the bill is extremely high, requiring a prosecutor to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a person knowingly and intentionally slaughtered horses for human consumption. This high standard ensures that innocent horse owners are not at risk while putting businesses that engage in moving American horses to slaughter on notice.

Graduated Penalty Structure Protects the Innocent. A first-time offender who is found guilty of knowingly and intentionally sending less than five horses to slaughter is only liable at the misdemeanor level. This legislation will only affect killer buyers in the business of outbidding others at auctions and sending truckloads of horses to Mexico or Canada for slaughter for human consumption. Paperwork at the border requires all horse transporters to clearly identify if horses are going to slaughter (any misinformation on these forms constitutes a violation of the False Claims Act, carrying stiff penalties).

Message
When contacting your U.S. Representative, its important to remember to be polite and respectful. Here is a suggested script for conveying all of the necessary points to the legislative staffer:

"Hello, my name is [your name] and I live in [your town]. As a constituent, I'm calling to urge my Representative to co-sponsor a new important bill: H.R. 6598, the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, to prevent horses from being cruelly slaughtered for human consumption.”

THE CURRENT STRATEGY IS A JOINT EFFORT BETWEEN AAHS AND HSUS. This is their message.........

I have great news! A new bill to address horse slaughter has just been introduced in Congress. Please read more of how you can help pass HR 6598 and protect horses from slaughter.

1. Your Message to Congress

When contacting your U.S. Representative, its important to remember to be polite and respectful. Here is a suggested script for conveying all of the necessary points to the legislative staffer:

I just talked to an aide in Rep. Burton's DC Office - hs is from INDIANA and is a long-time cosponsor of HR 503. Conveyed my thanks and how thrilled I am that he has submitted HR 6598 and gave them my contact info with request to let us know how else we may assist. Told them we have a national internet group of horse welfare people who will be calling their Reps, let us know if/what else we can do.

I am really excited about this. This Bill eliminates virtually any rational concerns that were keeping legislators from cosponsoring HR 503. This Bill becomes part of the US Criminal Code (That's what Title 18 is, the federa; crimes are all there.)

I emailed our Congressman about HR 6598 and will call tomorrow. Good news. The more I think about this, I believe it is a clever strategy.

No biopsy report back for Kaiser. Culture results showed "suspicious for bacteria". I was hoping for "lots of bacteria" instead. I would rather deal with infection than the other possibility. Thanks so much to all for the prayers and good thoughts. It was an emotionally exhausting day - waiting, waiting. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Blessings to all!!

WOW- ALOT GOING ON IN THE HORSY WORLD -- NOT A GOOD TIME FOR MY DOG TO BE EXTREMELY HIGH MAINTENANCE --HE'S VERY SICK THOUGH.

I'M 100% IN SUPPORT OF THE BAN ON HORSE SLAUGHTER, BUT WHAT'S THIS NEW BILL -- "PREVENTION OF EQUINE CRUELTY ACT?" MAYBE CONGRESS IS JUST ATTEMPTING TO PUT IT INTO DIFFERENT WORDS.-- I'LL DO MY STUDYING, I AM ONE OF THE HORSE RACING LOVERS, BUT I DO FEEL MUCH MORE CAN BE DONE TO CAUSE FEWER BREAKDOWNS. THAT WEBSITE IS REALLY GOOD YOU POST ALEX, BUT LONG. I'LL READ IT IN IT'S ENTIRETY THOUGH.-- THE MANIFESTO THINGY.

LOVE,
CHERYL

WOO HOO!!!

GAME ON!

OK Famblee, we're here and we're calling. Let's burn up those DC phone lines tomorrow and see how many co's we can get before the end of the month.

I am soooooo excited about the new direction.

Posted by: cathypotter at July 25, 2008 2:19 AM

Hiya, FsOB! I'll try to log onto the US House of Representatives' Website tonight or tomorrow (I am really exhausted from preparing a major deliverable for work). After reading the language, I'll contact Congressman Courtney's office. I assume that we are seeking cosponors, correct? Please advise. Thanks, RMH

#### To Janice: Please let Denny know that if my doc told me I needed a similar procedure, that I would give my consent and pronto (and I tend to recommend conservative clinical approaches). I know so many vibrant folks who feel that their pacemaker really gave them a new lease on life. Thankful to see that Kaiser's biopsy results were suspicious for bacteria; that sounds encouraging to me.
To Nancy in CT: Lovely photos from Rachel's shower. Kudos to all of you who participated!
To Padme: I'll keep Dr. Sweeney's Mum in my thoughts.
To Cheryl G.: Sorry that your pooch is not feeling well and being a tad high maintenance right now.
To Jonna: I'll keep you in my thoughts and hope that your town doesn't put restrictions in place about the # of pets that one can have. Your GHs are lucky to have you as their protector! ####

Everyone,

The two rescues (NJ and SOS) need help DESPERATELY. God willing, we won't have to do this much longer!

Fran

Posted by: FG at July 25, 2008 2:37 AM

Please try to help with the NJ rescues. These are horses destined for the Black American Farmer group, right? Let's get this a done and prove that this will be a viable place for our horses to reclaim their place in the agricultural world.

Any amount will help. $11. Anything. Let's celebrate HR 6598 with getting all the NJ horses out of the way of the meat man. Because that man is GOING DOWN> Go to the DB. please.

Love you Barb!

Act Now to Stop Removals from Cloud's Herd

Dear Friends of Cloud and his herd;

You are the greatest!! Your emails, calls and letters have gotten the attention of BLM and now I am asking you again to fight for Cloud, his family and his herd.

Cloud and his band enjoying one of the remarkably huge snowdrifts atop the mountain earlier this month. Photo by Deb Little.

The BLM has issued an Environmental Assessment (EA) which is separate and apart from the HMAP long range planning document that so many of you commented on earlier this month. This EA calls for the removal of up to 38 wild horses from the Pryor Mountains and comments are due on Friday, July 25. Removals could begin as soon as the end of July. You can read the EA by clicking here.

The Billings BLM has characterized this removal to the National BLM office as an "emergency". In other words, they have said that the Pryor wild horses are in danger unless they are removed. This is laughable, of course, based on the health of the wild horses and the wonderful condition of their range.

But, Cloud and the wild horses of Montana's Pryor Mountains are in danger----not from staying at home on their mountain. They are in danger if BLM removes them.

E-mail Jim Sparks, Billings BLM Field Manager with your comments or call him at 406-896-5013. You can also e-mail Don Glenn, Division Cheif of the Wild Horse and Burro Program. Additionally, please call the toll free BLM number in Washington DC: 1-800-710-7597 to speak out for Cloud's herd.

Your message should be simple, polite, and clear:
There is no emergency on the Pryors. The horses are in great shape and so is the range. There is no need for this action, particularly when a clear danger awaits the horses if they are removed. BLM has indicated that they may euthanize the wild horses they have in holding and there is currently no adoption demand.

What is particularly disturbing about this EA is that the BLM makes no mention of what they would do with the horses after they are removed!

Please share this message with your friends and family and anyone else who can help us.

Happy Trails!

Ginger Kathrens

P.S. Trace and I have a message to "Save Cloud's Herd and America's Wild Horses" on YouTube. See our video by clicking here.
