Barbaro Updates: 639

updates are now here.

Update 3786: Jeremy Rose has had his suspension reduced: Rose Suspension Reduced to 90 Days.

Update 3785: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

This week has already seen its share of speculation about Lava Man's future after his last-place finish in the Eddie Read Handicap; his connections seem to be leaning very strongly toward his retirement.

It seems clear that the 7-year-old gelding is past his peak as a racehorse; his recent effort was his sixth loss in a row. His last win, in the Gold Cup, was very hard-fought indeed and some suggest that it may have taken the wind out of his sails to a certain extent.

However, Lava Man himself seems to be following the path recently blazed by Funny Cide -- he clearly thrives on training and life at the track, but doesn't seem as interested anymore when it's time for a real race. Given all that he has accomplished (going from $50,000 claimer to over $5 million in earnings), it seems that the timing may be right for him to emulate Funny Cide yet again and become a stable pony. While not specifically outlining that strategy, trainer Doug O'Neill sounds ready to make the call:

"It's so frustrating because he trains so well and he looks good physically," O'Neill said. "But at the same time, he's a fan favorite, he's lost six in a row and just to retire him sound would be a good feeling.

"Unofficially, he's retired in my mind, but the owners want some time to think about it."

Some may suggest that a stall is waiting for him at Kentucky Horse Park (and, indeed, that might be a good place for him at some point down the line), but given his determined efforts not to win outside his California home (and everyone knows a Californian who has tried, and failed, to live elsewhere, only to wind up back in California), I would keep him with his friends at Santa Anita, but perhaps in a new role. Green But Game asks what you would do with Lava Man here.

In the meantime, Curlin (whose own more official poll continues until the end of July) worked out at Saratoga over a sloppy track; his younger stablemate Pyro also took to the mud in a workout for the Jim Dandy on Sunday -- Saratoga is almost upon us...

Update 3784: A quiet morning for me this morning, I only had four to ride. We had lots of workers as well as a few horses with the day off. The four I rode all went nice and easily for a trouble free morning for me. The siren did go off a couple of times and I saw a couple of loose horses tearing off through the tunnel to exit the track.

The OTTB of the Week competition is nearing it's conclusion with the last selections. While we had planned to select eight finalists altogether, you have to indulge us as we actually selected ten. The final three finalists to join the seven already selected are:

Courageous Comet
Sabovee
Carson City Kid

Congratulations to all those selected and to all those who have thus far added their OTTBs to the OTTB project. You are helping promote these amazing athletes.

Next week we will figure out a voting mechanism so everyone can vote on their favorite selection. The winner will receive $500 to go to their horse rescue of choice.

Update 3783: Curlin had his first work yesterday since his second in the Man o' War. He went an easy half mile: Curlin Back on Work Tab at Saratoga.

Please keep calling, writing and making appointments.

Hay, FOB's!

Am I first today????

###
It promises to be another hazy, hot, humid day here in Chester County...but as I type, there is a squirrel relaxing on the branch of the pine tree.

I plan to go to KF and drop off my contribution to Edgar's HOF Induction commemoration. I feel this is truly going to touch his heart and strengthen the bond between him and the FOB's.

Hiya, FsOB! Yes, Padme, it's already a hot one here, too, on the banks of the Thames this morning. I encourage everyone who couldn't read yesterday's comments to check out the great plans underway to honour Edgar Prado and also to help TB Friends as a tribute to Lava Man. The Barbaro Nation - a mighty nation of warm hearts, guided by the Sublime One! Have a safe & productive day, everyone!

(from the Discussion Board...)

Dear Frens and Famblee, I’m sorry I’m so late in posting about Rachel’s baby shower. I know you would like a report on the behind-the scenes goings on, so pull up a chair while I share with you what took place on Sunday.

Let me start by giving a shout out to Della Micah, who is the Queen of Parties. Della drove over early to give me a hand with the party after she found out my other helper couldn’t make it. Thank you thank you thank you Della for saving my sorry self from implosion when I got behind in wrapping all the presents the FOB’s sent! Once Della finished wrapping the gifts, she put on her Decorations Chairman hat and proceeded to decorate my living and dining rooms to beat the band. In no time she had hung the decorations from curtains, windows, rafters, and the big banner I had made up that said “Congratulations Rachel! With Love From Lynne And Nancy And The Fans Of Barbaro.” Albert and Heather arrived and assisted Della in completing the decorating – great job you two on crepe hanging! Most of the decorations (outside of the store bought ones) were in Lael colors as well as the paper plates, utensils, and tablecloths. I used one of the small stick ponies that Mercy was selling at the Celebration as the table centerpiece, I stuck it in a vase of white marbles and it looked great. Alie brought a bouquet of balloons as well as a beautiful sheet cake, it was delicious, Alie, and those that left early missed out on a tasty treat!

The guests (including personal friends and co-workers from the Giant supermarket where Rachel worked before KF) arrived promptly at 1:00 and started in on the appetizers. Albert kept watch out a side window for Rachel and Dan’s car and alerted me when they arrived. I met them outside and brought them in through the lower part of my house and made the “pregnant ladies first” remark, so when Rachel climbed the stairs to the upper floor she would turn and see all the guests. I’m sure Della captured the moment when everybody yelled ‘SURPRISE!” because I saw Rachel’s flabbergasted face when she realized she had walked into her baby shower and was not having a picnic at my place.

Rachel received a ton of gifts from the FOB’s, lots of adorable baby boy clothes from infant to at least 8 months, a wicker basket filled with all kinds of baby needs, a high chair, various gift cards including one from Supper Thyme which Rachel had expressed interest in (www.supperthymeusa.com) and the most stunningly beautiful afghan in Lael colors knitted by the FOB’s and put together by FOB Kathie Crawford.

Jacob was so adorable helping his Mom open presents! He would choose which ones he wanted her to open and Rachel would let him tear the paper off so she could open the box. Jacob would stand there and oooh and aaah even before we ladies could get a peek at the item. Jacob was moving the presents along pretty fast when he learned there was a big brother gift in there for him, too. It was charming to see this beautiful child talk about his little brother and all the presents he was getting. God bless you, Jacob, you have won our hearts.

After opening and stacking the presents (I told you there was a lot) we had a late lunch, sat around and chatted, and shortly thereafter almost everyone left, full of good food and the memories of a happy mother and son opening presents together. Dan mostly stayed in the background, he and Albert observing the women from a safe distance.

When Albert and Dan packed up the car with the gifts there was barely enough room in the back seat for little Jacob! I drove over to Rachel’s house later in the evening with the leftover food, enough to feed the family for a few days.

I want to acknowledge all the hard work Lynne Brown and Nancy Goss put into this shower. I thank them for asking me to be a part of a special day to honor Rachel and her little one. FOB’s from California to Connecticut made it a memorable day for a lady who is always giving to others but rarely receiving. Thank you, Fans of Barbaro, for making it happen to one so richly deserving.

My best to all,

Robin West

(Lynne and I were honored to be the long-distance coordinators for this wonderful event in honor of our dear fren Rachel, but Robin was the real hero of the day...an enthusiastic, gracious and generous "hostess with the mostess!" And Della Micah, an FOB angel for sure, was truly heaven-sent!)

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyKey and the rest of the stellar gang of Heavenly Equines.

On their behalf
MORNING POST/ShelleyA, Debra, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 21

As you know, Congress will be in recess for the month of August. As we approach the end of the month, we are asking that you start making appointments now to meet with your legislators in their local offices. You can also try to get a calendar of events they will be attending for the month of August. Many of the local events will be close to home for you and would be a wonderful opportunity to speak to your legislators directly who are very difficult to approach when they are in DC.

This is also a good week to follow up with those that you think are close and might just need that extra call to get on board.

It has been suggested that we continue calling leadership to let them know that this issue is still very much in the forefront and is NOT going away!!

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) DC Phone: 202-225-4965 Fax:202-225-4188

Senate Majority Leader - Harry Reid (D-NV) DC Phone: 202-224-3542 Fax:202-224-7327

Please continue to gather information from your calls and pass that information on to us via email through the DB. Keep in mind, instructions may change as we get feedback and the week progresses.

Finally, please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter when making your calls and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

We are BARBARO’S VOICE……Let it be heard!!

Yole know that Joe and Cathy have The Friends of TB Friends behind them, right? Yes, they can use every donation, but I do not want anyone thinking that they are laboring alone. Join the Friends and get the inside skinny: plus you can finally see a picture of the Sheltons!!

So not to panic.

If there was ever a group supported, it is Joe and Cathy. Recently, the Friend bought Joe a "new" truck, a manure spreader and many more new round pens. This latest one in memory of Stephanie Breaux's mom who was a devoted supporter of TB Friends.

I just did get the impression that they're alone, but they are not. God never lets his angels fly alone. xxoo: j Courage.

I love Joe. And all his helpers. And the second generation of horse rescuers he is forming out there in very need CA..

District Judge reverses gray wolf delisting throughout Northern Rockies
Judge Molloy acknowledges unreasonable threat to wolf population under current plans; states that USFWS acted prematurely by delisting wolves despite scientific evidence

MISSOULA, Mont. – Today, Judge Donald Molloy of the U.S. District Court in Missoula granted a preliminary injunction placing gray wolves in the Northern Rockies region back under federal protection until a court case challenging the removal of wolves from the federal list of endangered species is decided. Below is a statement by Suzanne Asha Stone, northern Rockies wolf conservation specialist for Defenders of Wildlife, regarding today’s announcement.

“We’re very pleased with today’s decision to restore federal protections to wolves in the Northern Rockies until the ongoing case is ultimately decided by Judge Molloy. This is a very important first step, since it stops the continued and almost indiscriminate killing of wolves under the states’ management plans that could have put the long-term recovery of the wolf at risk.

“The delisting of wolves was inappropriate and illegal in large part because existing state management plans are inadequate to ensure the long term conservation of wolves in the region, allowing far too many wolves to be unnecessarily killed. Responsible, balanced management by the states would benefit wolves, ranchers, hunters and all Northern Rockies residents. While the court continues to weigh our challenge to the delisting decision, we will continue to work to improve the current state plans so that they maintain a healthy wolf population.”

JOE ON A ROLL...
88888888888888888888affirmed888888888888888888888888
Tuesday, July 22nd...
I am mostly blind and always losing my glasses. All day yesterday the little cell phone was like Pizza Hut. I had to recharge twice. Lots of addresses, lots of phone numbers, lots of quotes. Lots of nice folks going to voice mail because I could not find my glasses. I am going to share with you quotes from yesterday.

But first I must tell you, it is wonderful to be me. I get to meet and talk with the most giving people on earth.

Here we go. Quotes from yesterday:

I promise to love, honor, and obey. Send me your pathetic and I will make him a star.

We have six acres and two horses. After reading your website I called my husband at work and said guess what, we now have four horses. Please send me a mare and gelding.

This is exactly what Dixie needs. She has been lonely for a long time. Deliver to us a friendly gelding.

It makes me sad that people are losing their ranches. It makes me even sadder for the horses. The very least I can do is help out with one. I would prefer a gelding.

It breaks my heart that people are losing their ranches. Horse people must come together to help each other in these hard economic times. You can deliver to me whenever. I am home each night after 5:30.

Joe I love sight unseen. It is like Christmas, and what is under the tree?

This is so much fun. I feel good about myself.

Can you deliver to Pheonix?

Can you deliver to Montana?

Can you deliver to upstate New York?

Can you deliver to Edmonton, Canada?

Is there a tall flashy chestnut gelding that looks like Secratariat? (yes)

My daughter is 17 and she says come on mom, we have to do this. My daughter says one more mouth to feed is no big deal. But my daughter does not pay the bills. Since she was 13 she has been a random act of kindness believer. I would do anything for her. We will take a mare.

I am not able to feed another horse, but I am sending you a $50.00 gas card to help your horse haulers.

If I took another horse my husband would divorce me. But I am sending you $25.00 for a few gallons of gasoline. God Bless You.

(this came from a good friend who I talk with all the time) Joe you are such a bad influence on me. I can take one of the Redding horses. I will be at your ranch on Saturday.

The following voice mails came last night after
6:00.

Joe she is beautiful. How did you know I wanted a gray filly?

I love him Joe. Thank you. He went right up to Sadie and introduced himself. Then he stole her supper.

Joe your vanner Jennifer phoned and said she was running late. She wanted to know if I had dinner yet? Jennifer got here about 7:00. She brings me a cute chestnut gelding and a container of chow mein. When Jennifer was leaving she hugged me and said thank you. You certainly have nice people working for you Joe.

This is Joe again. Over 70 horses at 4 different ranches need new homes. Yesterday we placed 34, which is almost half. 15 of those 34 have been delivered. Arrangements have been made for the other 19.

I am going to leave the journal from Monday up until at least Wednesday. Just think. What if a brand new reader clicks on and sees this on Wednesday? And what if the brand new reader says sure, I can take another horse? So for the next few days the post from yesterday will remain.

Thank you to everyone for making yesterday memorable. I will never forget your kindness. And Thank you to our horse haulers. Enjoy your Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

We are currently working with 4 ranches who must be rid of their horses. 71 horses total, but it could be more. The majority are thoroughbreds. One ranch is near Napa, and if I do not find homes for these horses they will be sold at a livestock auction. If you have recently attended an auction you know just how bad the market is.

Another ranch is on the way to Redding, and if I do not find homes for their horses they will be sold at auction.

Another ranch is near the town of Pleasanton, and if I do not find homes for their horses they will be euthanized.

The fourth ranch is fancy, on the way to Santa Cruz, and if I do not find homes for their horses they will be sold to horse killer Kevin Lewis.

Here is the deal. The Pleasanton horses who could be euthanized are free.

For the Napa, Redding, and Santa Cruz horses there is a fee. Between $300.00 and $500.00, depending on the weight of each horse.

You are not allowed to see the horses. Blind adoptions, the ultimate rescue. There will also be a transportation fee, just for gasoline, and we will keep those costs at a minimum.

Please do not ask our horse haulers for history on the horse. Or where the horse came from. Our horse haulers are sworn to secrecy. The only way we are allowed to help these horses is by not embarrassing their owners.

A few of the Redding and Napa horses are being moved to my ranch. The rest remain where they are, and where you live determines which ranch you get a horse from. Say you live in Sacramento, then you would probably receive a Redding horse. We will do our best to keep fuel costs down.

Once again, this is the ultimate rescue. Sight unseen, and you might be disappointed with what comes off the trailer. Maybe you were expecting Big Brown, and instead you get Dakota who is 30. You will be expected to love and adore Dakota, and to provide for him.

Many of these horses are underfed. They need feet and dental work. If you have no funds to care for a horse, please do not call me.

If you are a horse trader, a horse killer, if you represent an auction yard or a polo team, please do not call me.

Do not send an e-mail, as I am outside all day, and I would hate to miss out on a possible adoption. Phone me at 530-383-2120. If I am unable to answer leave a message, and I will call you soon.

I know of no other way to help these horses. Secrecy of their owners must be honored.

July 22 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Years ago, a very wealthy man was asked about the condition of his soul. He responded as he always had---with the idea that money can buy anything. A large sum of money was offered if anyone could give him tangible proof that he even had a soul. His business acumen was not in keeping with the spiritual, so he did not know his soul was a combination of mind, will, and emotions--the very things he used to accumulate his wealth!

Many real things are not tangible--fragrance, the wind, sounds; but we feel their influence and know them to be actual and sometimes more enjoyable than that which is touchable. To hear the wind chimes, to smell the bed of petunias and honeysuckle, to feel the breezes--these lovely things prove that we do have souls.

My friends, your people have both intellect and heart; you use these to consider in what way you can do the best to live.

appropos of the hope and joy we derive from reading what Joe and his staff of angels are doing -

from my anecdotage (just this past Sunday)

[note, not a plug for PetSmart, could have been ANY pet food store - but it happened to be PetSmart...]

When I went to PetSmart on Sunday, I thought to myself in the parking lot on the way in, watching happy people/families w/ dogs coming and going, "Some people go to Church on Sunday, I go to PetSmart!" How it does one's heart good to see people who "get it" . . . you know what I mean.

Well once inside - right as you walk in there is an adoption display on the right crawling with kittens in comfortable cages. As I said to the lady in charge (the outfit is called "I wanna go home" in a nearby IN town) - I can't take any, I already have NINE - asked her for a card, and as I'm enjoying looking at the kids, a family comes up and says, "We're here for Tom" and the lady says "Yes, we have your paperwork, he's here." and I just about lost it. Later as I was waiting for help at checkout to get my kitty litters into the car, the dad of the family that adopted Tom was waiting for the rest of his clan to meet at checkout, he had a cart full of cat stuff, and I said to him, "Thank you for taking him in, I love to see stuff like that, I have a houseful and all rescues but not from an official rescue." I asked if he was to be a first cat or if there were already cats in their home and he said "we already have a few," and as we parted I said what I said to myself on entering a few minutes earlier, "Some people go to Church on Sundays, I go to PetSmart," and we grinned at one another.

EXTRA TUESDAY July 22 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS list NOW posted below and at this ABR/DB Thread:

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their 2008 WHITE PAPER are at the above DB Thread.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that all three former horse slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently; and Cavel (Dekalb IL) lost its appeal and the US Sup Ct just refused further review. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Tuesday 7/22/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

extra Tuesday 7/22 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS) -

HS History - They ALL cosponsored and voted YES on HR 503 in the 109th Congress. Their votes on HR 249 are indicated below. (Y = Yes; N = No; NV = Not Voting.)

IMO - THANK whoever voted YES on HR 249 - but remind them that 249 only applies to WILD equines and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to end export.

Thank them all for having cosponsored and voted YES on HR 503; use their prior support of the slaughter ban bill when urging them to cosponsor now. "You cosponsonred before - WHY NOT NOW?!?!?! DO THE RIGHT THING AGAIN."

OHIO

SOUTH CAROLINA
Rep. James E. Clyburn (NV on 249; cs & Y on 503
Fax: 202-225-2313 Phone: 202-225-3315
2135 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515-4006

NOTE from CJ - because of Rep. Clyburn's House Leadership role (Hse Maj Whip), his public position is that for that reason he will not cosponsor; IMO - acknowledge this to the aide you talk to, but ask them to convey to Rep. Clyburn your hopes that the Rep will do everything within his power to get HR 503 to a vote in the House; remind there are presently 205 House cosponsors - and that both presidential candidates (Obama and McCain) are cosponsors of S 311, the Senate counterpart of HR 503.

IF you're done with today's ABR/AAHS Instructions & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to post 3 of the DB Thread noted above, for a good alternate target list of Senators compiled by AWI/SAPL.

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! Go get 'em.

Jockey Club creates injury database

By GLENYE CAIN OAKFORD
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Jockey Club has launched an equine injury database, horse racing's first nationwide database logging racing injuries, the organization announced Tuesday.

According to The Jockey Club's announcement, the database's objectives are to identify the frequency, types, and outcome of racing injuries using a standardized format that will generate valid statistics; identify markers for horses at increased risk of injury; and serve as a data source for research directed at improving safety and preventing injuries.

The database stems from discussions at the Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit, hosted by The Jockey Club in Lexington two years ago. Public attention to racehorse injuries had been heightened that year by Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro's breakdown in the Preakness Stakes; he was euthanized in January 2007 due to complications from his injuries. In 2008, racing found itself under increased public scrutiny again after Kentucky Derby runner-up Eight Belles fatally broke both ankles while galloping out after the Derby. Those deaths and the resulting public backlash prompted a congressional inquiry into horse injuries, steroid use, and other racing-related issues.

The Jockey Club tested a pilot program of the equine injury database from June 1, 2007, to July 12, 2008, logging more than 3,000 reports of horse injuries.

The database will be provided to participating racetracks and racing organizations free of charge.

Wolf Victory

Dear jonna,

It's the best possible news. Seven weeks after we went to court, a federal judge has ordered the Bush Administration to restore endangered species protections for wolves in the northern Rockies until the full case can be heard.

This interim victory is nothing less than a life-saving reprieve for hundreds of wolves outside Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. Since the Bush Administration stripped the region's wolves of federal protection, a total of 110 wolves have been brutally killed in as many days.

But Judge Donald Molloy ruled that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service "acted arbitrarily" in taking the wolf off the endangered species list and turning their management over to the states.

That means Wyoming, Montana and Idaho will be forced to abandon plans to allow the extermination of hundreds of wolves this fall as part of a massive public hunt -- the first in more than three decades.

Simply put, the wolves of Yellowstone and the northern Rockies are much, much safer today than they were just last week.

This incredible, eleventh-hour victory never would have happened without your strong support. Your donations and online activism have fueled this campaign since day one.

Thanks to your backing, a tenacious coalition -- composed of NRDC, EarthJustice and 11 other conservation groups -- has worked tirelessly to save these magnificent creatures in one of America's best-loved places.

Make no mistake: the fight for Yellowstone's wolves is far from over. Judge Molloy's injunction is temporary. We must now wage the courtroom battle for a final ruling in favor of wolves.

You can help us win that fight by making an online donation now. Your contribution will also help support our grassroots operation, which is collecting thousands of Save the Wolf Petitions from tourists in Yellowstone National Park this summer.

With your support, we are going to win both in the court of law and in the court of public opinion –- for the sake of wolf survival. Thank you for making this latest victory possible!

Sincerely,
Frances

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF JULY 21

# Hello FOBS! I am posting for Lin at Epona who has several horses coming into her rescue this week. One of them is Seattle Slew's Granddaughter ~ Starving
I just can't believe the skeleton I see when I look at her picture. It is so sad. If anyone can spare a little something to help Lin out with these horses it is very much appreciated. There is still a $25 match on the table. Thanks All.

Hiya, FsOB! That is really an important step that the Jockey Club has taken, setting up a database to track racing-related injuries. And thank goodness for the Federal judge who ruled to restore endangered species status to the wolves, even if only until a full hearing has occurred. Once again, the judicial system has helped protect animals in our country. Thank goodness for their wise actions!

To Alex (and to each of you), do you know who is favoured to win in the big race at Monmouth this weekend? Brent asked if Big Brown is currently the favourite or not.

Wishing each of you 'ACN' and may we all rise to seize the new day!

#### To Renee, I hope that you received a good report today. ####

# just thought I would post who the starving mare is in case anyone was wondering!

This poor mare is Vickys Slew. She is 22 yrs old.

Here is her pedigree info:

###Well, from the small number of posters today, I guess everyone else is having the same kind of day I am having.

I had hoped to have several days off from work because I have a riding lesson with a new instructor Sunday (more money, more travel and I want to make a good impression, which means bathing the horse, clipping, trimming, etc.) but at the rate my week is unfolding at work, I may JUST have time to clean my tack.

Practicing beforehand is out of the question.

Heavens.

###I went to the local gas station to get some fuel cards and both my ATM and my credit card were "denied."

My ATM card is "full" and the credit card is "empty," so I guess it was a faulty scanner. Trouble is, I did not get the cards.

Drove to the bank just to verify that things are okay. The card IS "in working order," and I do have a positive balance.

(Don't you just LOVE technology? It messes up and we lose all our computer files, important information, and can't pay for goods OR services).

###Now, however, I'm kicking myself because I did not change the PIN on my ATM card and now I'm freaked out because maybe someone at the station was "gathering information" to steal my identity. I've gone through that once (18 months ago and it took 15 months to get it straightened out) and have no desire to go through it again.

###So, hope you are all just busy and have had no time to post.

###Am not sure how I feel about Jeremy Rose.

###Am appalled at the condition of Vickys Slew. Our older equines need such special care. She looks like a special needs girl worth helping out.

###Which brings me back to the gas cards.

SIGH

Onward. And Alex, Thank You.
