Barbaro Updates: 638

updates are now here.

Update 3782: It looks like Lava Man is retiring after his race yesterday in the Eddie Read: Lava Man's career likely over.

Update 3781: Excellent news. Witt Ante, who is on our Top Bunk List, and ran on Friday at Evangeline Downs for $4k, has been retired by his Breeder! Witt Ante was mentioned in the Daily Racing Form article this weekend: Ask the Lord gets new life on farm.

Update 3780: Big Brown pleases in his most recent work on Sunday. He is preparing for the August 3rd Haskell at Monmouth Park: Big Brown in Sharp Work for Haskell.

Update 3779: A nice and easy morning this morning. I only had five sets, four before the break and one after the break. All galloped nicely. The wet weather of late appears to have driven trainers from the training track to the main track, it was very busy out there this morning!

Jen provides a nice wrap up of all the weekend activity here at Woodbine: FIRED UP.

Update 3778: Lava Man was unable to maintain his position and faded late in the stretch in the thrilling Eddie Read at Del Mar: Monzante Zooms to Eddie Read Triumph.

Please keep calling and writing.

For Canadians: Canadian Horse Defense Coalition Call to Action.

Hiya, FsOB! Wow, Monday is here already. I had another idea last PM about a possible tribute from the FsOB for Edgar Prado, in honour of his induction into the Hall of Fame. (I made a suggestion on yesterday evening's board about the daycare center at either Aqueduct or Saratoga which Edgar helps with charitable contributions.) How about a gift to New Bolton Centre or to the Laminitis Research Fund at UPENN's School of Veterinary Med? A contribution and a formal plaque for the exterior or display case perhaps? Edgar seems like the kind of gentleman who'd want his recognition to go towards helping others, either people or horses. Just a thought as the planning group gives its consideration to what to pursue. Have a good day! RMH

#### To Debbie LA: Funny thing, I am actually awful with names. I can remember lots of details about individuals, but names really throw me and always have.
A healing day to Nala, Over Enough, Jake, and Bart! ####

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous, Belle, KeyKey and the rest of the glorious gang in Equine Heaven.

On their behalf:

MORNING POST/ShelleyA, Debra, WI/AAHS:
STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF JULY 21

As you know, Congress will be in recess for the month of August. As we approach the end of the month, we are asking that you start making appointments now to meet with your legislators in their local offices. You can also try to get a calendar of events they will be attending for the month of August. Many of the local events will be close to home for you and would be a wonderful opportunity to speak to your legislators directly who are very difficult to approach when they are in DC.

This is also a good week to follow up with those that you think are close and might just need that extra call to get on board.

It has been suggested that we continue calling leadership to let them know that this issue is still very much in the forefront and is NOT going away!!

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) DC Phone: 202-225-4965 Fax:202-225-4188

Senate Majority Leader - Harry Reid (D-NV) DC Phone: 202-224-3542 Fax:202-224-7327

Please continue to gather information from your calls and pass that information on to us via email through the DB. Keep in mind, instructions may change as we get feedback and the week progresses.

Finally, please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter when making your calls and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

We are BARBARO’S VOICE……Let it be heard!!

Shelley and Deb

Cheers,
Friar Tuck

Happy MOnday FOBs,

Robyn, thanks for the good wishes for Kaiser. He's at the Vet now, will have surgery today and the test results for the biopsy should be known by the end of the week. He comes home tomorrow.

What will it take to get S.311 and H.R.503 passed? Maybe we need a whole new congress. Like most of the FOBs, I'm frustrated with Congress's attitude toward those who elect them.
But, we keep plodding on - doing what we can to pressure them.

Have a good day!!

Evening Attire ran a great race, you could see he was ready to run, must have know Breeders Cup was on the line, congrats to this wonderful warrior.

Over Enough is in a clinic in South Florida, he has an infection in his elbow joint, very serious says the vet. They flushed it Friday and he is on heavy antibiotics and is much more comfortable. Hoping this works, next option would be arthroscopic surgery to clean out his elbow, please keep good thoughts for him that the antiobiotics will work and he can walk.

Please pray for Noah, a very sweet PMU draft across from Over in the clinic, he foundered after colic surgery and needs prayers as he fights for his life.

A little sad Lava Man didn't do better...but he's a true champ with a superior heart. Sounds like he was in some pretty tough company. Better trip next time, Lava Man. Everyone, 2 and 4 legged safe and sound, I hope?

Well to all the FOB Grammies and Aunties... I can't even begin to thank you. From the very bottom of my heart, thank you!

I have had so much anxiety over getting the "needed" items for this little guy, who will be here in 5 short weeks. I haven't even gotten the furniture out of storage yet!!

Today was such an awesome day. The blanket that so many of you took part in, absolutely took my breath away. One gift coming together from all around the country... amazing. The clothes, the "toys", all that baby stuff that I've forgotten I needed (Jacob is 6). It's all so wonderful and very much appreciated. However, I have to say, I was simply overwhelmed by the love that you all sent along with it. Words escape me, so all I can say is that I am truly touched.

A very special thanks to Nancy, Lynne and Robin... who all claim they didn't do much! Bah ha!! You have given me such a special gift!

So from myself, my husband, Jacob and little baby boy (enderingly named bam-bam by Nancy and Lynne) Thank you, thank you, thank you all! We are blessed to be a part of this famblee.

Much love,
Rach

###Wow, I have just finished reading the posts from the weekend, and what a weekend it was.

#Mirabel & Hans, very happy that everything turned out well, what a scare. RCH is a great hospital and sounds like very caring doctors there.

Alex, you simply amaze me with all that you have done and continue to do. You have really stepped up to the plate for the horses, you are a true inspiration.

#Otherlyn, as Mirabel stated, be sure to read those papers carefully and ask many questions. We're here for you to continue your journey into a new life.

#Daryl, so sorry to hear of Callie's passing. I too have a cat rescued from abuse and abandoned. She is just the sweetest cat anyone could have. Thank you for all the work you do and your perservance.

##Joan Roya, prayers to you and Curtis and those that were killed and injured in that terrible accident.

##Who's Happy, congratulations girl, you are just super.

So many in need of prayers and positive thoughts

((Over Enough and Noah))))
(((Lava Man)))
((((Kaiser)))
((((Bart & Laurie H))))
(((Chief))))
and so many others, my heart goes out to you.
and finally,
Barbaro, who brought us all together, you are forever in my heart.

Have a safe day everyone.

JOE FOR MONDAY: This IS THE IMPORTANT STUFF...THIS IS WHAT WE WILL BE FIGHTING ONCE WE PUT AN END TO HORSE SLAUGHTER.
**************************************************
Monday, July 21st... The times we live in.

I will post the following again tomorrow. A different ending, but the hearty part remains the same. We are currently working with 4 ranches who must be rid of their horses. 71 horses total, but it could be more. The majority are thoroughbreds. One ranch is near Napa, and if I do not find homes for these horses they will be sold at a livestock auction. If you have recently attended an auction you know just how bad the market is.

Another ranch is on the way to Redding, and if I do not find homes for their horses they will be sold at auction.

Another ranch is near the town of Pleasanton, and if I do not find homes for their horses they will be euthanized.

The fourth ranch is fancy, on the way to Santa Cruz, and if I do not find homes for their horses they will be sold to horse killer Kevin Lewis.

Here is the deal. The Pleasanton horses who could be euthanized are free.

For the Napa, Redding, and Santa Cruz horses there is a fee. Between $300.00 and $500.00, depending on the weight of each horse.

You are not allowed to see the horses. Blind adoptions, the ultimate rescue. There will also be a transportation fee, just for gasoline, and we will keep those costs at a minimum.

Please do not ask our horse haulers for history on the horse. Or where the horse came from. Our horse haulers are sworn to secrecy. The only way we are allowed to help these horses is by not embarrassing their owners.

A few of the Redding and Napa horses are being moved to my ranch. The rest remain where they are, and where you live determines which ranch you get a horse from. Say you live in Sacramento, then you would probably receive a Redding horse. We will do our best to keep fuel costs down.

Once again, this is the ultimate rescue. Sight unseen, and you might be disappointed with what comes off the trailer. Maybe you were expecting Big Brown, and instead you get Dakota who is 30. You will be expected to love and adore Dakota, and to provide for him.

Many of these horses are underfed. They need feet and dental work. If you have no funds to care for a horse, please do not call me.

If you are a horse trader, a horse killer, if you represent an auction yard or a polo team, please do not call me.

Do not send an e-mail, as I am outside all day, and I would hate to miss out on a possible adoption. Phone me at 530-383-2120. If I am unable to answer leave a message, and I will call you soon.

I know of no other way to help these horses. Secrecy of their owners must be honored.

more to come

Joe has his hands full

Your so right Jonna!

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at July 21, 2008 3:45 PM

I love Joe and Cathy Shelton.
Period.

I know that they were put on this earth to help horses.

How else are they strong enough to go on and on. How else are they charasmatic and honest and pure enough to inspire such devotion from their vets, their farriers, their haulers, their foster homes?

How else are they magnetic enough to attract the loyalty and devotion of the next one or two generations of horse rescuers?

How else does Joe get the strength to deal with the vermin horse killers, people (and i use that term loosely) who are building mansions in Mexico on the bones of thousands of dead horses?

(I know Joe calls this dancing with the devil. I have danced with greyhound farmers...I know the feeling. You just want a long hot shower afterwards. And a stiff drink--or a pint of Ben & Jerry's if you gave up on the booze years and years ago....)

People (and I use that term loosely) can trash what I do and say here all they want, but understand that I am part of the superstructure that supports the Joe Sheltons and the Stephanie Pierces and the others, the many others who put the welfare of the horse above their own.

We're a machine. We're an offshoot of the House that Barbaro Built. We need to be ready for the DAY SLAUGHTER ENDS. And we'll all need to be pulling in one direction.

So, in my little house, we're prioritizing, and we're calling and doing whatever we can. We help rescues when we can. I picked one group to assist on a monthly basis--and believe me--they won't be raising any interest on this small donation.

But we're getting ready. I dearly miss my frens who cannot be on the ABR anymore. I lub them.
I know they're there...but I miss their wit and their spirit and their fight.

But for the rest of us who are still wading through, I love you guys, I need you all. You have no idea how much I need your inspiration and your love of the horse.

From a woman who always thought she'd have at least one horse in her life: well, I guess I'd have to say that The White Mare is that horse, becasue I know she is waiting for me, and that's making me cry.

So: later: Keep marching. We have to be READY. Horse Slaughter WILL die on this continent.
I swear this on the white spot on the pastern of Barbaro's hind leg.

Posted by: jonnagrey at July 21, 2008 3:53 PM

OH, JONNA...Joe, Cathy! The secrecy, the horses. How do the FOBs begin to help? This is going to be a big, big important effort!

Mornin' Famblee

this is another week. Another week closer to our goal. We can do it, it may not be this week, but it will be. We just have to keep at it.

Thinking good thoughts for Over Enough, hoping he doesn't need another surgery, for Kaiser and his surgery and a successful recovery, for Nala, for Noah, for Joe and Cathy Shelton and all those in their care, for Joan's Curtis and his coworkers, the families of those killed and injured, for darling Rachel and her little baby who will be born very soon, (so wish I could have been there) and Maribel and Hans.

of course my thoughts are with everyone else, too, that we can maintain our strength and optimism, and perseverance.

Hoping Lava Man will be retired. JohnC graciously posted his photos from the Eddie Read Handicap at Del Mar yesterday. Looked like an absolutely perfect day, except that handsome Lava Man came in last :( Monsante is stunning, and congratulations to him and his connections.

Keep at it!! We'll hear from our leaders with directives and strategies, along with their very encouraging words and support, so let's give it back to them. we CAN do this.

Please support your local rescues.

Thanks Alex, for all you do

EXTRA MONDAY July 21 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's HAHS list of Senators is NOW posted below and at this DB Thread:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=26627.1

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB Thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that all three former horse slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently; and Cavel (Dekalb IL) lost its appeal and the US Sup Ct just refused further review. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Monday 7/21/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

IF you're done with today's ABR/AAHS Instructions & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to post 2 of the DB Thread noted above, for a good alternate target list of Senators compiled by AWI/SAPL.

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! Go get 'em.

Alex,

Great news about Ask the Lord and Witt Ante. I also have some encouraging news about Lights on Broadway. I talked to his former trainer Saturday and asked if he knew about his running at Anthony Downs in a $2500 claiming race. He said he did because his wife is keeping track of him. She is looking for a home for Lights on Broadway right now, so he can be retired. He assured me that nothing bad will happen to him. They are both concerned about him. So hopefully another horse on Top Bunk's list will be retired and safe very soon.

THE REST OF JOE'S POST FOR TODAY:
****************************************************
There is a fifth ranch, but for now the owner is okay. He has a new stack of alfalfa and a pallet of grain. The owner is good for another two weeks.

Daily come phone calls of horses in trouble. The only way I can help these 4 ranches, and maybe a 5th, is through the strength of our team. Loyal folks who love horses, who put horses Number One. We could not do this without you.

On this chilly Monday morning, and later we could be 85 degrees. By Friday we could be 185 degrees. More horses came to us from race tracks yesterday. And we got to meet Josh Parks, an actual male person, and Josh is 14. Josh has been writing us letters for almost two years, and he lives near San Diego. His thoroughbred mare is June Bug, and she can jump over the moon. Josh and June Bug are doing the show thing together, and they also trail ride in the hills above Del Mar. Josh brought Cathy and I a dozen blueberry muffins from a bakery in his neighborhood. Unbelievable stuff. Pony Boy ate one muffin, and now he wants to go live with Josh.

Joe

Yesterday On Our Ranch:

Top Left: Misty and Maggie hold meetings at the old ranch truck.

Top Right: This is Driftwood, a gelding from a race track, and he is 3. Driftwood comes to us with a bowed tendon. I suppose we will call him Woody. He is crazy for peppermints.

Bottom Left: His name is Heavenly House, and I suppose we will call him Heaven. He just raced on Saturday, and came to us on Sunday. Heaven is a sweetheart.

Bottom Right: Her name is Risque Yodeler, and she is 4. I suppose we will call her Heidi. She is a strawberry roan, and her daddy is Swiss Yodeler. Heidi is sweet and respectful.

Maribel and Hans,
You are both in my thoughts and prayers. Good news yea!

Joan and Curtis,
It is so sad what happend with the accident and the loss of lives.I hope the two of you are doing OK? ((((((((Joan&Curtis))))))))

I still love Lave Man, he has a good story how he came to be.

Horses Gods most beautiful creature.

hAy famblee, sneaking in!

I started a thread on the DB about this--can someone blue link it here?

The thread is about honoring Lava Man's retirement by raising funds for a donation for Joe and Cathy Shelton's Thoroughbred Friends in Lava Man's name.

After skimming Comments today, I am doubly committed to this effort. What better way to honor a retiring champ whose connections have done right by him, than by helping a hundred anonymous racers whose connections have not done right by them (for whatever reason)?

HONORING OUR FREN LAVA MAN - what a fabulous idea from Susan E to pay tribute to this grand horse by raising $$$ for a donation for dear Joe & Cathy at T'bred Friends!

Please take a look, add your thoughts, and consider a donation...if everyone does just a little, we will have a lot!

Posted by: Nancy in CT at July 21, 2008 11:10 PM

July 21 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

She was e ls si, a woman elder, a leader with great gifts, and what she spoke rang with truth. She said, "Every person makes a strong statement about who they are." The words were simple and unpretentious but they were powerful, for every day we hear people telling us who they are. Some say, "I am sick"; others say, "I am broke." Some have said over and over, "I am afraid."

Their claims are as good as done. They can make new claims of health and plenty and strength, but they seldom do it. But when these very personal statements come to our ears, we can remember to write out our personal beliefs of well-being and never part with them for a minute.

You must speak straight so that your words may go as sunlight to our hearts.

###Re the ranch situations Joe and Cathy at TBFriends are dealing with: I won a little money at Lotto ($11, whoopty do) and am putting it and a bit more in a check to them for their efforts.

The Risque Yodeler filly pictured today is by Swiss Yodeler, who is half brother (well, they share the same daddy) as my Echo Dancer. I will say that EVERY Swiss Yodeler offspring I have met (and there have been probably half a dozen) has been tractable and sweet, even "just off the track."

The sire, Eastern Echo, was a gentleman in every respect, too. I have never thought the sire's disposition mattered much because the foals never MEET the sire; they learn their behaviors from their mothers. That said, the Eastern Echo connections are changing my mind.

My "Huey" is a darling and so were all his "nieces and nephews."

###Anyway, and change of subject, excellent plans to honor Edgar Prado and his induction to the Hall of Fame. Couldn'ta happened to a nicer guy, y'know??

###Alex, thank you.

Hiya, FsOB! What excellent plans are underway to honour Edgar Prado for his induction into the Hall of Fame. Ditto for the plans being put into action to provide some $$$ for TB Friends in honour of Lava Man. Wishing each of you an ACN. Have I said lately that all of you (in addition to those who lavished their affection & expertise on Barbaro during his too-short lifetime) renew my faith in the world? Peace, RMH

#### Please keep Anne Brennan, Erin's mother, in your thoughts, meditations, and prayers. The 21st is a hard day for her.
To Janice & Barb M.: Keeping Kaiser, Nala, Over Enough, and Noah in my thoughts. Here's to a full recovery for each of them.
To Renee: May your appt. go well tomorrow, hoping that tendon is healing well.
To Joan Roya: I thought immediatly about Curtis when I saw a gentleman on TV on Saturday. He escaped injury when his work schedule was changed from Day to Evening shift last week. I hope that OHSA finds answers quickly. ####

Prayers are answered daily right here on ABR....

I stopped by the horses tonight...they were ALL grazing peacefully...a soft breeze carressed the air and the smell of fresh grass wafted everywhere!! The little bay colt with the white blaze stopped grazing immediately and stood peering out at me followed by his mother....slowly as they ALL grazed they ALL seemed to edge closer to where my car was parked at the side of the road.
I should have got out and they ALL would have come to greet me but I was too mezmerized by their beauty and the joy of just being there sharing their space!!! Ahhhhh...

Thank you for everything Barbaro....

Sleeptight FsOB......y'all are loved in very high places!!!!

HUGS...LOVE and warm Barbaro wuffles to ALL tonight!

STRATEGY FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 21

Robyn....and Renee and family...thank you...

someone said there was another accident a few weeks ago with a cherry picker involved..???

Susan...beautiful idea...Joe and Cathy would be greatly appreciating anything...

I am so fearful of what is going on with the horses and animals...so fearful and very concern...

and...they saying the economy could get worse...I pray we can find answers on how to handle all of this....

we know one ripple effect can affect a whole lake...so we will make a difference in someone's life, save a horse or an animal, help a family member, or say a kind word.

I can say....everyone of you are the most compassionate, loving family anyone could ask for.

#####
Fran...has posted about the New Holland rescue...can we help them...please.

Also...remember the other rescues, MHR, Horsefeathers, Lifelines, and so, so many more......

If you'd like to donate to EDGAR PRADO'S GIFT honoring his installation in the Hall of Fame, please read this thread...the deadline for contributions is MONDAY, JULY 28th, so time is short...but nothing is impossible for the Fans of Barbaro.

Donations of any amount will be greatly appreciated...if we all do a little, we will have a lot!

#### Kay,

Way to go. Joe & Cathy are the best. Any amount will help pay for the $4+ gas to transport those ranch horses. We are all better for reading Joe each day.

I don't know how he does it, but he will do it better with our help.
