Barbaro Updates: 637

updates are now here.

Update 3777: Found on PaulickReport:

Gift horses may be going to slaughter.

Update 3776: Wet wet wet. I think that might also be a band name, but it aptly describes the weather here at Woodbine this morning. And probably this afternoon. We had seven sets, five before the break and two after the break. All mine went nicely, which under the slippy conditions is always a good thing. I did see one loose horse, walking out of the tunnel! Anyway, a good day to look forward to the post work shower!

Update 3775: Today's racing is highlighted by Lava Man's attempt to return to the winner's circle in the Grade 1 Eddie Read: Lava Man gives connections confidence entering Eddie Read.

Music Note, fresh from her upset win in the Mother Goose, dominated the Coaching Club American Oaks on Saturday at Belmont Park: Music Note dominates short field in CCA Oaks.

Update 3774: Evening Attire, at age 10, won his first race outside of New York and "qualified" to run in the Breeders' Cup. He last ran in the Breeders' Cup five years ago: Ageless Evening Attire Earns BC Berth.

Big Brown remains on schedule for a return in the Haskell: Big Brown on schedule for Haskell.

Update 3773: Another hot morning this morning at Woodbine. Thankfully we only had six sets, five before the break and one after the break. All went nicely for a very straightforward morning's work. I will be returning a little later to help paddock school one of our runners for tomorrow. We also have a couple of runners in the 2yo stakes race later i the afternoon. Should be a fun day at the races.

Update 3772: A great article on the retirement of Ask the Lord: Ask the Lord gets new life on farm, excerpt:

"It's about the dignity of the animal," said Alex Brown, a Woodbine-based exercise rider who runs the website alexbrownracing.com, the home of the Fans of Barbaro. "These guys have made a lot of money. They served the industry very well. They've had the high accolades, and now they're running in races that don't really befit the quality of horse that they once were."

And congratulations to Tim Woolley for his first stakes win of the year with the impressive Who's Happy winning the First Approach at Presque Isle! That's Happy's second stakes win at the track.

Comments

Good morning, fellow Fans.

It's rainy here in the Downeast this morning, but we're supposed to continue our hot and humid weather later.

Congratulations to Tim and all of Who's Happy's connections.

I came across this story in Thoroughbred Times this morning...Dr. Palmer is onto something here. Value change urged for racing I found this quote particularly powerful...If we dont take care of the horse, we go down the tubes.

Enjoy your Satuday - races from Virginia on CBS at 5 pm EDT and from California on ESPN2 at 7 pm EDT. You know where I'll be!

Good morning, Frens Of BARBARO.

It must have been a rough night for our dear Maribel. Please, throughout the day, continue to lift up Hans and Maribel in your prayers. Please also, intercede for the families of the crane accident.

There are so many needs brought forward to our attention on this board. However, there is enough strength and will here, to effect a positive force to counteract whatever may come our way.

Many horses are running today. God Speed them all safely home. EVENING ATTIRE will try again. He runs at 3:22 today.

Have a super day, everyone.

### Maribel, we hold you and Hans in our hearts. May the Lord get you through this. Stay strong. Remember...nothing will happen to you without passing through your Father's hands.

HAPPY RACING DAY ALEX & FOB'S!! :>)

I DID JUST SKIM SOME OF THE ARTICLES IN MY BLOODHORSE NOW, I'M A BIT CONCERNED ABOUT THE ONE ARTICLE.-- THG. I HAVE FAITH THERE'S WAY TOO MANY HORSEMEN WHO LOVE HORSE RACING AND WILL TAKE CARE OF THE SITUATION.

I ALSO RECEIVED MY CURLIN ALERTS AND WAS HAPPY TO HEAR HOW MANY PEOPLE VOTED IN HIS POLL. I'VE BEEN A DIE HARD FAN OF THE GREAT CURLIN SINCE STEVE & SCOTT TOOK OVER CURLIN'S TRAINING, LAST YEAR - AROUND MARCH. I FORGET THE NAME OF THE GAL WHO WAS CURLIN'S PREVIOUS TRAINER. SHE SEEMED VERY NICE, BUT STEVE DEFINITELY MADE A HUGE NAME FOR CURLIN. I DID VOTE FOR DIRT (SYNTHETIC) THOUGH -- SEEMS THE MAJORITY WOULD LIKE TO SEE CURLIN ON TURF AGAIN.

LOVE,

Hay, FOB's!

###
Maribel, prayers (and Reiki) are on the way for you and Hans...come here when you can. We're here for you.

###
Am very happy for Who's Happy...I know she and SherryAZ bonded when we were at the barn last week. Donna Quinn and I will be at the barn on Sunday and will spoil her and tell her how wonderful she (always) is...:)

***Cheryl G...the previous trainer was Helen Pitts. Originally from Maryland and now predominately training in Florida. TBH did a profile of her 28Jun08 issue (I think). And I think she knows turf very well and is a better than average trainer. Nothing to take away from MR. Asmussen, but she laid the groundwork for Curlin' and I think she did an excellent job...not mention that Curlin' is one super athelete with one sharp brain in that beautiful noggin'.

Ask the Lord gets new life on farm
By MARY RAMPELLINI

Ask the Lord made a lot of people a lot of money as a winner of 23 races and $769,640. Now, at the age of 11, he has been retired as the result of work done by a group looking to get aged earners of more than $500,000 off the track.

Ask the Lord won his maiden in March 2000 at Fair Grounds and went on to win six stakes during a career that took him to Belmont Park, Saratoga Race Course, and Churchill Downs. But in time his star faded and his slide down the class ladder started in earnest in August 2006, when he ran for a claiming price of $30,000. By fall 2007, he fell to the $5,000 claiming ranks, and last month, Ask the Lord ran second for a $4,000 tag at Evangeline Downs.

Through his website, Brown was contacted about Ask the Lord by Fans of Barbaro member Mary Overman. She wanted to retire the horse and went to work negotiating a purchase price with the horse's latest owner, Steve Isaac, who in April had claimed Ask the Lord for $7,500. From there, it became a matter of raising the funds to do the deal. And while Overman was working on the project, Sue McPeek, the wife of trainer Ken McPeek, got an e-mail about Ask the Lord.

"I got involved and told Kenny about it," Sue McPeek said. "It was at a point Ask the Lord was probably going to be running pretty soon. He ran on the 19th of June. We needed to get the deal done."

Ken McPeek, who was in California to run My Baby Baby in the American Oaks, wired the asking price of $4,000 to Isaac. Angelo Trosclair, a retired jockey who now runs an equine vanning service, shipped Ask the Lord at a reduced cost from Louisiana to the McPeeks' farm in Lexington, Ky.

"Everyone wanted to make this happen, even the current owner," Brown said. "These guys at Evangeline were quite open to retiring the horse. They didn't make money off this horse. He had been claimed quite recently. Everybody did good by this. It was a whole network of lots of different people doing a little bit."

The original plans were for the horse to be sent to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation in Lexington, Ky., but that has changed, Sue McPeek said.

"When he came off the van, he looked great," she said. "He had good condition on him. He was sound. Once we got him off the van, we gave him a bath and he settled right in. We took a personal liking to him and thought maybe we could use him as a pony. He's just very classy."

Sue McPeek said Ask the Lord will work with young horses at their farm, Magdalena. She has been involved in projects like this for a long time and one way has been through the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.

"Every winner that Kenny and I have, we donate money to the TRF," she said. "It's kind of an automatic way of giving back. There's an easy form for owners and trainers and jockeys to fill out and participate. It's a tax deductible donation."

Brown said Isaac has been updated on Ask the Lord working as a pony.

"A lot of horsemen really care about this issue, and they want to know that the horses are not going to be sitting in some field the rest of their lives with no real purpose," Brown said. "Steve Isaac was excited to hear that Ask the Lord will be passing on his wisdom to the next generation."

A few months ago, Brown compiled a list of 10 horses who have earned $500,000 or more and are running for a claiming price of $5,000 or less. His goal is retirement for all of them, and so far two of them are off the track, Ask the Lord and Top Bunk.

"There's lots of horses, and you can't help them all, but you do what you can do," Brown said.

Brown said his next goal is to see the retirement of Witt Ante, a former Louisiana-bred champion who last raced at Evangeline, and Lights on Broadway, a former Texas-bred champion who last ran for a $2,500 claiming tag at Anthony Downs in Kansas. Together, they have earned $1.1 million.

Joe on saturday...ALL THE DAYS MUST SEEM THE SAME. GOD LOVE THE SHELTONS:
******************************************************
Saturday, July 19th... Several horses from Los Angeles area race tracks lately, including a gelding called Yankee Boot. He comes to us in very poor shape. Last night, under the big moon, Yankee actually roared. It will be a month before steroids begin to fade. Until then, Yankee truly believes he is king of the jungle.

Officer Tony also came from a race track in terrible condition, and he is mentally depressed. A long walk in the afternoon sun woke Officer Tony up. He watched a rabbit play in the weeds. Welcome to our world. Flies and garden snakes and everywhere you turn a new wasp nest. Officer Tony has two puffy knees. The UPS driver stops to say it looks like that horse ran into a brick wall.

Buddys Mandate continues to remove his fly mask, and I would love to set up a video camera to see how he does it.

Military Rhythm turns his water buckets upside down, and then wonders why there is no water to drink.

Play Misty For Me stands over the blind little dog Sadie Mae, giving her shade. Sadie Mae goes potty, and Misty stays with her until she is done. Going to the bathroom in shade, and how cool is that?

Logician loves to sleep in the afternoon sun, but it has to be right up against a panel. If I had a dollar for everytime I have pushed his face back into the round pen, I could buy Dairy Queen.

I found Allison Martino sound asleep with Limo for her pillow. Limo and Allison curled up together, and Limo was afraid to move as he did not want to wake her. They were both covered in flies. Not your typical Hallmark photo.

I found Cora Mason cleaning the feet of Dare Thee Power, a new filly from the race track. Cora is 13, and unable to have her own horse. She loves Dare Thee Power, and tells her to pose while she takes many pictures. The filly never moves. A star is born.

I found Maddie with her head in my fridge. She grabbed a red Gatorade and said geez Joe, that package of tortillas has turned green.

I found Oh Mandy not doing well. Under the big moon I brought her from our south field so she could spend the night in our mare motel. Oh Mandy is a recent arrival from a feed lot, and she is having health issues. At sunrise Oh Mandy seems to be doing better. We need to watch her carefully.

While I was searching for my pocket knife which cuts hay twine, I found a five dollar bill. Stuffed deep inside the seat of my old ranch truck. Like finding a free gallon of gas.

It is Saturday, and time to cut open 18 bales of hay for morning feed. We might be 89 degrees. Delicious coffee is from Peets, and chocolate cupcakes were made by Hostess. Another gelding is coming to us from Bay Meadows race track. We are shoulder to shoulder, hock to hock. A blast in the boonies...

Joe

Report of another loss this last week:

Grade I winner and millionaire Tomisues Delight was euthanized July 16 following complications from colic surgery. The 14-year-old daughter of A.P. Indy was kept at William S. Farishs Lanes End Farm near Versailles, Ky., for owners Hilbert Thoroughbreds and Menard Thoroughbreds.

TOMISUE'S DELIGHT was a full sister to MINESHAFT and was in foal to AWSOME AGAIN at the time of her death.

RIP, good girl. You and your un-known-un-named little one may now run on the great green plain of THISGOODPLACE. You did good.

Thanks jonnagrey for the DRF ATL piece posting here...lost my freakin' piece of teenee, tiny paper with DRF login info on it.

Cheryl G...I wasn't upset when Curlin' went to Asmussen. He's on a whole other level than Ms. Pitts...right now. I just think she did a fantastic foundations job with Curlin'. I can't recall if it's the breeder or owner (maybe one in the same) that decided on the 2 yo racing thing. Either way, they did right by him.

I giggle and wonder if Mr. J shouldn't give Curlin' back to Ms. Pitts for the possible turf campaign???? No disrespect to Mr. Asmussen of course.

Dear Frens,

Last week we enjoyed a virtual "bloom" of FOBs returning to this site. Please, if you are one of them, or know anyothers, let them know how refreshing, and IMPORTANT their presence is.

We must TEND this garden, and carefully cultivate the seeds that were planted at the beginning.

We have ALL been drawn by BARBARO...from the Carrot Posse to the Newbees. We are famblee. Please help us to maintain our calling and purpose.

We are a FREE, GRASSROOTS organization of Frens...like minded, for the most part; quite diverse, and powerful.

We have work to do. Please come back. Please stay.

Your FOB Fren, O

hAy famblee!

I didn't get to return to the site yesterday. So much went on yesterday....

My thoughts and prayers are with Maribel and Hans; the families of the crane accident victims; and our own Daryl.

Maribel, Hans will be all right. They'll find out what's going on and fix him up.

Daryl, your post yesterday brought me to tears. Your dedication, expressed so eloquently, is a breath of fresh air. And my answer is a resounding: YES!

Regarding Callie: when we share that bond of love and kindness with an animal, they know it, on the deepest level. Animals are so intuitive, probably more so than most humans. Callie knew.

Daryl, I wonder if Callie chose to go at that time because she thought it would be easier on you that way. Maybe this was her gift to you, her way of thanking you for saving her from abuse and giving her a life of love, warmth, safety, and tenderness.

Many years ago, my sister and her family had a sweet orange tabby named Dusty. Sometimes they'd let Dusty go out into the fenced back yard with them. One day Dusty fled the yard. He'd never done that. Dusty had been sick. They found Dusty curled up under a bush in a little nearby park. The vet said his illness had caused his kidneys to fail, and he had run off to be alone as he knew his time was near. The vet said this is normal for animals.

My sister blamed herself for letting Dusty into the yard, but no. This was how Dusty needed to be as he crossed the Bridge. He wanted to do this, and needed to, and he would have found a way. I think your sweet Callie needed to cross the Bridge her way and in her time, because she loves you.

When I was growing up I lived a lot with my grandparents who lived in the country. They always had several dogs. These dogs roamed all over the 2,000 acres and hardly ever got hurt. If they got hurt they would always come to the house. If they died of natural causes from old age they would o way up in the hills and never seen again. A vet told us it is instinct and very common. ###I am so happy for "Ask The Lord". I wish that for them all. Besides how would you send a horse named Ask The Lord to slaughter.? HANS UPDATE

FINALLY...AT LAST!!! SOME ANSWERS....

They have released Hans from hospital and he is already back at work with strict orders not to do any lifting.A battery of doctors and specialists spent the better part of last night doing a myriad of tests and xrays to finally determine the root cause of his discomfort!!!

What was so confusing was there was a series of problems happening resulting from his coronary artery bypass surgery....usually the heart specialist aka cardiologist explained they only see one complication but never 4 at once !!!!!

The culprit is inflamation....

1.The heart wall is inflamed and in spasm
2.The esophagus got disturbed from the surgery and is in spasm making it hard to breathe
3.The cartilage in the sterum has produced some scar tissue so it is painful
4.The blood pressure is elevated due to the pain of ALL of the above!!!!

He has been given special medicine to reduce the muscle spasm and inflamation .The cartilage problem will take a couple of years to straighten out but should be bearable!!!

The GOOD NEWS....
The bypass looks excellent and the arteries are ALL clear. The surgical site ALL looks VERY GOOD!!!
GOOD WORK ...Royal Columbian Hospital!!!

EVERYONE...doctors,nurses etc were ALL VERY HAPPY and relieved that his heart is OK!!!(many of them worked with him for well over 30yrs years when he was head of food services at the hospital)

I'm HAPPY and ECSTATIC but VERY VERY TIRED !!!

WHAT would I do without my FOB FAMBLEE????

are we aware of this??? Federal ban proposed in House on double deckers for transportation of equines for ANY purpose. (found this at the HAHS group site)

http://www.thehorse .com/ViewArticle .aspx?ID= 12312

Federal Ban on Equine Transport via Double-Decker Introduced
by: Pat Raia
July 18 2008, Article # 12312

The use of double-decker trailers to transport horses for any purpose would be banned nationwide if a new bill recently introduced into the
U.S. House of Representatives becomes law. But some equine welfare advocates say the bill is flawed.

Sponsored by U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), H.R. 6278, the Horse Transportation Safety Act of 2008, would amend Chapter 805 of title 49,
United States Code, to prohibit horse transport in double-decker trailers in all 50 states and in all U.S. territories.

Under the proposed law, violators would be subject to federal civil prosecution by the U.S. Attorney General, and fines of $100 to $500 per
horse.

However, some say the bill is too lenient.

"This kind of transport is cruelty, so the charges should be criminal," said Donna Ewing, president of the Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society in Barrington, Ill. "And the fines are too low; they should be so stiff that people wouldn't even think about violating the law."

The bill also raises enforcement questions, according to Christine Berry, longtime humane transport activist and founding president of the
Pennsylvania- based Equine Protection Network.

Where so-called "doubles" are currently banned, state and local authorities have jurisdiction to cite and prosecute violators, she said.

Under the proposed measure, the violation enforcement would fall to the U.S. Attorney General's office.

"So who makes the Attorney General aware of a violation?" asked Berry.

"Under this proposal, private citizens can't call 911 and get law enforcement. The law would be unenforceable. "

Neither Rep. Kirk nor his spokesman Eric Elk were available for comment.

Although the Commercial Transportation of Horses to Slaughter Act of 1996 prohibits the use of double-decker trailers to transport horses
headed to slaughter facilities, six states currently prohibit double-decker horse transport for any purpose, according to Humane Society of the United States statistics.

Ewing, whose organization served as caretaker for 42 draft horses involved in a double-decker rollover accident in Illinois last October,
said she supports the national ban effort, despite her reservations about the current bill.

"Creating a federal law is good," she said. "But without stiffer penalties, I'm afraid people will either pay the fines or find ways to get around it."

H.R. 6278 has been referred to House's Transportation and Infrastructure
Committee for review.

EDGAR BEING INTERVIEWED live on TVG

Posted by: CJaffe at July 19, 2008 10:34 PM

Good guy Edgar - you didn't forget to mention Barbaro (in the last statement of the interview). Made me cry.

Posted by: CJaffe at July 19, 2008 10:36 PM

Darn CJ, I missed that! What did Edgar say?

P.S. Wait till you see how beautiful our Million tickets are!

Posted by: mj at July 19, 2008 10:38 PM

I love this place - enjoying the racing day - wouldn't be doing that if I hadn't hooked up here - had just about given up watching and Barbaro brought me back and I haven't left again. (Ruffian drove me away.) I'm such a glutton for punishmnemt, I think it's called, but the enjoyment obviously outweighs the agony (or else I'm a masochist, haha) . . .

Posted by: CJaffe at July 19, 2008 10:40 PM

MJ - I can't quote it, something like, he thanked all the people and horses in his life who brought him to where he is now (very zen-like IMO), and then said but there was one special one who grabbed everybody's heart and that was Barbaro, and that was the end of the interview. Hope there will be a transcript of what he said . . . anybody else get it down?

Posted by: CJaffe at July 19, 2008 10:42 PM

######### directed to MJ but intended for all - - if there are any FOBs who want to join us at the Arlington Million on Sat Aug 9 - is it too late for them or do you have suggestions?

Posted by: CJaffe at July 19, 2008 10:44 PM

ruminating about second careers for OTTBs - what the McPeeks are doing with Ask The Lord - utilizing him as a pony horse at their training farm - is such a viable option and good good thing - he will be teaching the younger generation, as was pointed out in the article.

Seriously, I read some scientific studies in horse mags recently about how horses learn from other horses - and that is evidently recognized and utilized to optimal effect in the McPeek operation. Good for them!

And the Va Derby is underway . . .

Gio Ponte won, "Kent Desormeaux can't buy a break."

Posted by: CJaffe at July 19, 2008 10:50 PM

Poor Kent - He's been sitting on 4,999 wins for weeks and came in second in three races today! The rider who beat him in this last one, was Garrett Gomez and the commentator said it was "by millimeters."

Posted by: CJaffe at July 19, 2008 10:52 PM

Oh I miss seeing Showing Up run. Great commercial. Does anyone know where he was retired to? I would love to go and see him one day.

Posted by: mj at July 19, 2008 10:53 PM

no - I was one win off - apparently Kent is just the one win away now, and turn any one of these seconds into a win and it puts him over - is that right?

Posted by: CJaffe at July 19, 2008 10:56 PM

I think Edgar was saying that he has been given the opportunities to ride many outstanding horses, but the horse that gave him the edge was Barbaro. It sounded to me like he was giving Barbaro a huge amount of credit for his induction into the Hall of Fame. I just love him.

Posted by: mj at July 19, 2008 11:07 PM

######## well I've been up since 3 am - was planning a trip to "the old woods" for a trailride but there was an 80% chance of thunderstorms and it's an awful long car ride and a lot of gas (about 80 miles each way) and I can't be gone from home for more than 14 hours tops (with a diabetic cat) so can't stay overnight as I used to - so bottom line I scratched the trip for today, and now am supertired and needing a nap! More racing on network TV, though, I think - but I am off to curl up and get covered with cats - happens every time I settle into the "sleeping chair" after time at the computer. ttyl - now I'll be hoping for good weather next weekend - hope I don't live to regret not going today . . . (it didn't storm after all ...)

first “anabolic-free Breeders' Cup - CALIFORNIA BANS STEROIDS

don't think this has been mentioned here yet - thanks to johnc for posting at the DB

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/delmarraces/20080718-9999-1s18chrb.html

It recounts that Bo Derek attended her first California Horse Racing Board meeting since being appointed; excerpts pertinent to significant decisions:

. . . she and the other six members of the board voted to ban anabolic steroids. The ban is expected to be in effect by the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita on Oct. 24-25. It would be the first “anabolic-free Breeders' Cup in the history of the event,” said Rick Arthur, the board's medical director.

Additionally, the board voted to ban another controversial but less common practice. It involves “heel-nerving” – cutting a posterior digital nerve to desensitize it. It's intended to reduce pain, but other racing jurisdictions have banned such horses from racing, fearing for horse and jockey safety. Yesterday, the CHRB did the same, effective Oct. 1. [end excerpt]

Having done all, stand. Stop saying you wish you had done differently, stop the anger, and above all, stop acting like a donkey. Having done all, stand still and see it work, support it by keeping faith on your lips--not pitiful insecure words.

When a thing is right, it is right. Stand on it and make it part of your innermost spirit. How can your consciousness work to any advantage if you keep running in circles and doubting what you had to do? All the circumstances will come into play and make final decisions, but standing for right was your part---and you did it!

Our public library owns a copy of the video of Secretariat's last race, and I checked it out about 4 years ago to show my boys (then 9 and 7) who Secretariat had been and what he was like. Their response was "Woowwwwwwwwwww! That's cool!"

JOE: AND ONCE AGAIN WE SURVIVED THE SUNDAY AT THE BIG DAMNED MALL...BLESS THE CANADIANS, CNYERS CANNOT AFFORD TO SHOP IN THEIR OWN FRAKKIN TEMPLE TO CONSUMPTION....20% SALES ARE CANADIAN... (I always have fun brushing up my French with the little girls and their Moms who ask if it is OK to pet the dogs, etc...)
**************************************************
Sunday, July 20th... On this beautiful Sunday morning, later we might be 92 degrees, and I must hustle with morning chores. This is hardly much of a morning journal. 60 Minutes will not come calling. We are involved with other ranches. One of these ranches is near Napa, a gorgeous setting, and their horses are in deep trouble.

I am gathering facts and lining up our transportation team. Tomorrow I will share with you as much as possible.

We live in scary times. And it seems horses are the first to go.

Later today three more horses come to us from race tracks. Also later today we say goodbye to Dare Thee Power, and we barely got to know her. She just arrived a few days ago from a race track. We called her Pow Wow.

We will greet a thoroughbred mare from a feed lot in Vallejo. And a trip to the feed store is a must, as horses are on a bucket rampage. For whatever reason buckets are being mangled, destroyed, kicked like a field goal for three points. A bucket conspiracy among our horses.

Enjoy your picture perfect Sunday, and be sure to hug your horses. Off to feed the hungry. Crazy these days are...

Joe

Yesterday On Our Ranch:

Top Left: Our good friend Shayla from Animal Control brought us this brand new kitten.

Top Right: Brett and Kristen are the happy new owners of Dare Thee Power. Kristen has her 21st birthday later this month. A party so big cops will be called.

Bottom Left: All the young girls love the old man Limo. Limo might be a hundred, and he enjoys his cold water hosings.

Bottom Right: This is a douple dip. Champ and Eclipse love to shower together.

Hay, FOB's!

###
Maribel, prayers coming for you and Hans...great report today!!!

###
Am back from a busy day. Went to Fair Hill with Donna Quinn and we walked down to the exercise track...and briefly met Larry Jones...some of his riders were exercising some VERY beautiful horses and the riders were chatting with us.

Horses in Tim's barn are fine. Triumphant is still going after carrots as is Rosie Campbell. King Congaree was also his usual cheeky self, but I adore the heck out of him...Who's Happy seemed a little tired, but took the carrots...I told her how happy I was that she ran with the wind and came home...

###
Rachel's surprise baby shower went off beautifully. Robin's home is beautiful and is in a gorgeous wooded setting (only 6 miles from me). Food was great, people were wonderful and Rachel was truly touched by all the love from friends and famblee...

###
Have given Alie the heads up about the proposal for Edgar's gift...whoever wants to talk to her, she's ready...:)

Its hot, I'm tired...but today was a good day...a very good day.

PADME - thanks so much for the update on the shower...I've been holding my breath here! Hopefully Della will be posting some pictures...

### Fren Padme, You just wrote:

"Its hot, I'm tired...but today was a good day...a very good day."

It touched me when I read those words. The last I saw you was on the afternoon of the Celebration.

You were actively recovering from the disappointment concerning the vendor glitch. (You did it beautifully) It was like watching a long picked flower drink up water from a vase.

Then I sat next to you as you very intently sent Rikei (did I spell it right?) onto the track to keep the horses safe. I was awed by the power of your energy.

Later I felt you as a sigh of resignation. You quietly said that you would take your display items to your car. A sigh filled in the vacuum of the space you left behind. I did not see you after that.

Later, as I drifted off to sleep, remembering the day and the beautiful faces whose eyes I had looked into, I remember thinking that I would have loved to see you simply throw your head back and laugh.

Today, I received a picture of contentment in your words, "...today was a good day..." I will hold the truth of that peaceful image here, and wait until I next see you to watch for that easy laughter.

Just thought you would like to know. Your peace comes through.

Your FOB Fren, O

Hay, Nancy!

###
Yes, Della will be posting pictures. I had driven there from Fair Hill and a quick lunch with Donna (I recommend Wesleys...) and everything went off without a hitch. The knit/crocheted blanket is BEAUTIFUL!!! So many talented FOB's put so much love into creating it and Rachel was so touched. I was in awe when I saw it...and nearly in tears looking at how beautiful it is.

###
Have signed the petition...

###
Dearest Otherlyn...by the time I took everything back to my car, I had come to the realization that Spirit had its reasons for me and the other vendors being shut down. It wasn't the time, it wasn't the place. But I am now prepared for future signings...its part of a new vision, a new way of life. You are a dear fren and I look forward to listening to your wisdom.

###
With the events at the ranch last Thursday night with Stormy and the boys during the drumming/meditation, I may have to move there after all. Stormy showed me he has so much knowledge of spiritual evolution that he's kept to himself until now...and now he feels safe in letting us receive it.

Am exhausted...this heat isn't helping and all I want to do now is sleep.

Alex I hate to ask but Tim site is a mess with spam. I know this has to be upsetting Penny; I got to meet her at Fair hill. She was so great and I got three pictures of her and her friend.

###
Otherlyn I guess I missed you at the celebration? How did that happen? I was the one asking everyone to sign the thank you card for Sharon. Did you sign the card????

###
Lyn G it was really nice to meet you, thanks for the info on the shower. Hope to get pictures of our girls at KSF. I love the celebration the best time ever.

We did everything but New Bolton, The Whip and I had hoped to meet Alex! Maybe next year, Big thank you too all who work so hard to make it a great time. It was just wonderful for me and my sister Gloria.

Shelly A, Sharon and I can’t remember everyone’s name but you’re all the best in my book!

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF JULY 21

As you know, Congress will be in recess for the month of August. As we approach the end of the month, we are asking that you start making appointments now to meet with your legislators in their local offices. You can also try to get a calendar of events they will be attending for the month of August. Many of the local events will be close to home for you and would be a wonderful opportunity to speak to your legislators directly who are very difficult to approach when they are in DC.

This is also a good week to follow up with those that you think are close and might just need that extra call to get on board.

It has been suggested that we continue calling leadership to let them know that this issue is still very much in the forefront and is NOT going away!!

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) DC Phone: 202-225-4965 Fax:202-225-4188

Senate Majority Leader - Harry Reid (D-NV) DC Phone: 202-224-3542 Fax:202-224-7327

Please continue to gather information from your calls and pass that information on to us via email through the DB. Keep in mind, instructions may change as we get feedback and the week progresses.

Finally, please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter when making your calls and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

We are BARBARO’S VOICE……Let it be heard!!

Shelley and Deb

### Oh NO...Debbi LA, our little Southern Belle,

I DID NOT GET TO MEET YOU !!! :(

Didn't get to sign the card either.

Please, next time, let's not simply cross eachothers' trails in the sky. We must be sure to remember to seek. I look forward to looking into your beautiful eyes.

###We read about it all the time, the killer buyers coming with their kids to "get a free horse for the family" and then find out the horse goes directly to the truck to the border.

I'm not surprised that gift horses to riding programs end up on the same trucks for the same trip.

I can honestly see how people become hoarders ... better to have the horses in the back yard where you know where they are. The hoarders' mistake is that they cannot care for themselves, often, and of course the horses suffer.

I am sorry for the horses and sorry for the persons who donate horses to schools, thinking the situation is a win-win for all.

I fear that this same thing may be happening to horses that are available for adoption from legitimate rescues for very little money. People come with the same "this is for my kid, this will be a much loved family horse" story and that isn't true.

My preference is that the horses be sold or "adopted out" for a fee that is higher than the current "price-per-pound" so the killers who are looking to fill their trucks will be losing money if they pay the "asking price" for this rescue or that adoptable horse.

Hay All
One of our former homeboys, SNIFTERS SPIRIT, who was claimed away from FOB LynWins, came in 9th in his race today.

He ran in another $7400 claimer at Lone Star Park. The report is that he raced three to four wide on the first turn, was forwardly placed, dropped back near the half mile pole, went three to four wide on the far turn and tired.
No horses were claimed.

I sure hope that they are loving him good. I'll bet that Lyn often thinks of him. She too seems to have been missing been from the board for some time now.

SNIFTERS SPIRIT is currently owned by Sherril Johnson, and trained by Connie Daniels.

Does anyone know these ladies? Do you think we will at least get to see a report on him again?

God Speed, SPIRIT!

Hiya, FsOB! It's been soooo dreadfully hot this weekend in CT. I hope that all of my fellow Nutmeggers have had a safe weekend in this heat, humidity, and poor air quality.

Just a suggestion for the good folks planning something to serve as a tribute to Edgar Prado when he is inducted into the Hall of Fame. Isn't he one of the supporters of the day care center at either Belmont or Aqueduct? Please forgive my faulty memory.... Perhaps the day care center is in need of a piece of equipment or is currently having some physical plants renovations done. Maybe a contribution could be given in Edgar's name, with a small plaque that could be put on the front exterior of the facility. Just a suggestion for the group's consideration.

Wishing everyone ACN! Peace, RMH

#### To Maribel: Excellent news about Hans! You and he must be so relieved.
To Janice: I hope that Kaiser is able to have a comfortable night in advance of his biopsy tomorrow.
To Barb M.: Thinking of Nala & Over Enough!
To Laurie H.: May you & Bart have a great new work week. ####

#####

Well to all the FOB Grammies and Aunties... I can't even begin to thank you. From the very bottom of my heart, thank you!

I have had so much anxiety over getting the "needed" items for this little guy, who will be here in 5 short weeks. I haven't even gotten the furniture out of storage yet!!

Today was such an awesome day. The blanket that so many of you took part in, absolutely took my breath away. One gift coming together from all around the country... amazing. The clothes, the "toys", all that baby stuff that I've forgotten I needed (Jacob is 6). It's all so wonderful and very much appreciated. However, I have to say, I was simply overwhelmed by the love that you all sent along with it. Words escape me, so all I can say is that I am truly touched.

A very special thanks to Nancy, Lynne and Robin... who all claim they didn't do much! Bah ha!! You have given me such a special gift!

So from myself, my husband, Jacob and little baby boy (enderingly named bam-bam by Nancy and Lynne) Thank you, thank you, thank you all! We are blessed to be a part of this famblee.

Much love,
Rach
