Barbaro Updates: 636

updates are now here.

Update 3771: Two ladies of interest running tonight. Hawty Creek is running in the second race at Penn National, an allowance race on the turf. Who's Happy is running in the seventh race at Presque Isle, a stakes race.

Update 3770: Thoroughbred Brief examines Kenny McPeek's idea to use the Graded Stakes system to eliminate Steroids for horse racing: High Stakes - The Limits of Private Regulation.

Update 3769: A truly muggy morning this morning at Woodbine. Perhaps the muggiest of the year so far. No worries, if it is muggy here, I wonder how it is down there! I had eight sets, five before the break and three after the break that all schooled in the gate. All went nicely. Muggy weather usually keeps the horses a little on the quieter side. During the break I headed over to the track kitchen, which is becoming my routine. Then to the HBPA Office and enjoy the air conditioning, and chat with Corrine who runs the office.

All in all a decent morning's work. We have a few runners this afternoon, and I may head back to the track!

Update 3768: Thoroughbred racing returns to Michigan today with the opening of Pinnacle Race Course in the Detroit area: Pinnacle Race Course debuts on Friday.

Red Rocks will now remain in the US, his possible next start will be at Saratoga: Red Rocks staying in U.S. with Hennig.

Please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! Am I the only one thinking "TGIF"? Wishing each of you a safe weekend. It'll be unusually hot here in CT, let's hope that people remember to keep the animals with a good supply of fresh water. Sure wish I could go tomorrow to the Celebration of the Horse at Mitchell Farm Equine Retirement in Salem, CT. Anyone interested should call 860-303-8705 and ask for Dee.

Alex, once again, thanks for all you do in maintaining this site for The Barbaro Nation!

#### To Joan: Loved your story about bailing the two kittens out of animal control. Maybe they can help keep the office rodent-free.
To Maribel: You are setting such a good example that I got up and exercised for 30 minutes this AM ####

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyK and the rest of the gang in Equine Heaven.

MORNING POST/SHELLEYA, DEBRA,WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY, JULY 18

Both the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), have the power to bring the bill up for consideration in their respective chambers, therefore it is vital that as many people as possible, both at the grassroots level and internally within Congress, insist that the House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader do everything in their power to afford the bills legislative due process and bring them immediately to the floor for a vote.

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) DC Phone: 202-225-4965 Fax:202-225-4188

Senate Majority Leader - Harry Reid (D-NV) DC Phone: 202-224-3542 Fax:202-224-7327

It is our understanding that more co sponsors would certainly facilitate our efforts with Speaker of the House Pelosi and draw the much needed attention to this legislation. For this reason, we will be posting the names of Representatives that we will be targeting.

However, this FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY!! The day for you to go back over your lists and call those you may have missed. Or to give another call to someone that you think is close and just needs that extra “push” to come join us!

Please continue to gather information from your calls and pass that information on to us via email through the DB.

Finally, please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter when making your calls and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

We are BARBARO’S VOICE……Let it be heard!!

And while we're at it...
Good morning all!

REPOST

We’ve notice that over the past few days, there has been a lot of controversy about several issues. One of them is AAHS and the methods used to try and pass the anti slaughter bills.

Let me begin by saying, there is no such thing as instant gratification when trying to pass legislation. It is long, tedious, frustrating and, many times, disheartening work. However, imagine where our country would be if everyone stepped back instead of stepping up when the going got rough.

AAHS was established to be a dedicated site that deals with no other issue and is presented as such when dealing with legislators. Unlike other groups that deal with several different animal issues, this assures them that we are looking for nothing but to end slaughter and the transportation to slaughter. Grassroots lobbying is "our call to action" with the intent to change public opinion and continue to spread awareness. The more members we have, the stronger we are.

So far, everything we’ve done has been paid for directly by us. We are working on creative concepts for higher visibility and a media campaign. However, in order to move forward we need to raise dollars. We’ve started an AAHS store on cafepress but very few people have purchased items. Even if sales picked up, it would be far from the dollars we would need to achieve the maximum impact.

More efforts in DC are also needed but timing is critical when making those decisions. There have been many suggestions that we have a paid lobbyist thus defeating the meaning of grassroots. HSUS and AWI are paid lobbyists and have been working on this for years. AAHS has and will continue to work jointly with these organizations.

In order to move forward with more aggressive campaigns, AAHS will have to raise money. Keep in mind that donations will NOT be tax deductible and we are NOT a registered non profit.

It will be up to it’s members to decide if you want AAHS to grow because this belongs to all of you.

In the meantime, thank you for your dedication and hard work on behalf of our horses!!!

Good morning, fellow Fans!

I have a day off here in the humid Downeast. I'm off shortly to attend to some outdoor duties and then I will retreat to the cooler climates of the basement for the remainder of my day.
But, not until I have made my calls for the day!

Alex - I've been remiss in not thanking you for providing this forum for us. It's a thankless job at times so let me at least thank you right now.

Finally, I've contacted Americans Against Horse Slaughter and volunteered - HAVE YOU? If not, here's where to go to do it: AAHS

Repost from 5 hours ago...how I'm coherent is anybody's guess.

###
ITs going on 3 a.m. Friday morning and I got back from the ranch a short time ago...had a Full Moon celebration and something extraordinary happened...

Stormy has begun to open his knowledge to his owner, another friend and me. He took his owner and me into deep individual meditation sessions and I knew exactly what he was doing (with all my gratitude to Children of the Sun...). His spirituality, his knowledge is deeper, older than I realized, but its finally being "transmitted" (don't have any other way to describe it...but his communicating ability is strengthening). Spent most of the night drumming and just letting everything happen. Windy did his usual healing and Illusion is just starting to deepen his communication/healing abilities.

I am so proud of them, so honored to continue this journey with them...

Spent time with "the girls" - Cupcake and Shakkah and Pawnee. God I adore them so much. Shakkah starts nickering when she hears me call her and the look in her beautiful eyes does me in every time...:)

###
Lt. Lily reporting...so glad to see the Posse and many familiar and beloved names posting again (Hay, Pamie and Mocha!!! I have MISSED both of you...).

After all the happenings of this past weekend...I am so heartened to see how we are now showing what we are made of...that we can express our fears and then change those fears into the support that makes us FOB's...we're making lemonade from those lemons...and we'll make next year's celebration so much better...

You all make such a difference in my life...I love you all.

Sharon, for the fundraiser, I would like to volunteer to be the "moneykeeper" and ensure that all monies for auctioned items are paid for. As Sherry pointed out on the way to the airport Monday morning...its all for the horses.

And that's all that matters.

My life is gonna change big time...something has finally begun to manifest. Can't say more now, but when the details start coming together, I'll tell you...its good. Its REALLY good.

Healing, Love, Peace

TGIF FOBs,

I haven't been here for a few days. Family visit in PA took most of my time. I'm back in FL again and hope to get back into my routine.

Prayers for Barbi M. - Over Enough and Nala.

Please pray for Kaiser who will be having surgery again on Monday. The Vet will remove 2 screws that loosened up and will take a sliver of bone for biopsy to determine whether or not bone cancer is the cause of all this. It's something we thought was settled weeks ago and has again reared its ugly head.

JOE: TALKING ABOUT THE PALOMINO MARE WHO TOOK CARE OF THOSE FOAL IN THE FEEDLOT.Many FoBs helped get her and her little charges--whose Moms had been sent to slaughter already--free.
**************************************************
Friday, July 18th...
Go to pregnantmarerescue.com if you want to see a palomino mare with 4 foals. The dams of these foals were sent to slaughter, so this palomino mare took charge. Pregnantmarerescue is located in Aptos, California. Good people doing good work.

Yesterday in a Northern California chat room, RAndrews, Horsekid94, PrettyNPink, NSands, and MyGentleBen came together to save the life of a young thoroughbred gelding located in Turlock. The gelding was less than one hour away from being loaded onto a trailer headed for slaughter in Canada. A big Thank You to Ryan Andrews for giving up his day to provide transportation. The gelding is now with Nikki in Vacaville, munching on green grass and flirting with fillies. His new name is Yahoo.

A big Thank You to Jodi Tuft, Jennifer Wright, and Stephanie Diaz who were also on the road yesterday. A big Thank You to Georgia Hartman and Hoofbeats who transported horses for us on Wednesday. An amazing team we have. Always helping horses who need help.

We are at 80 percent. Ten times I have showed you a picture of a horse who needs a home fast, and eight times that horse found a new family. These horses are free and located in Northern California. I do all the screening. This morning I am reserving the top row below to Promise. A paint quarter horse gelding who is kind and well behaved. We can even help with transportation. My cell is 530-383-2120.

more to come

FROM THE PREGNANTMARE.COM BLOG ON OUR BABIES: GREAT MENTION OF THE FOBS:
**************************************************
More good news...Amazing Shirley P has rescued 4 foals and a mare. Each foal , a mere 12 weeks old had a mother, but 3 moms were sent to slaughter on the death truck, ripped away from their screaming terrified babies. I can't imagine the horror. One mare was left behind, and she has adopted all 3 orphans. This heroic mare is nursing all 4 foals now. They will travel by nightfall on Tuesday to escape the excruciating heat across the valley floor. They will travel from Fallon Nevada, to Santa Cruz County. They are due to arrive at PMR Wednesday morning. There are many angels, especially the Friends of Barbaro (FOBs) who stepped up and made this rescue a possibility. The money was raised very, very fast. It is a testament to the comittment these FOBs have for saving precious lives. I thank each and every one of them for helping these little ones get a 2nd chance.
**************************************************
FOR ME, THIS IS WHAT IT'S ABOUT. GOD BLESS THAT MARE.

Posted by: jonnagrey at July 18, 2008 2:52 PM

Good Morning Gang.

Jonna, the story of the mare nursing many foals is jarring. This mare and those babies need to be put into the campaign to end this crap. Pictures. Videos. This one mare struggling to feed orphaned children. PLEASE can someone get this into the campaign??

Jesus help us!

I do belong to another group - Pickens Plan. Now Al Gore is stepping in. I got an URGENT message from my state group last night. It has to do with Nancy Pelosi. She is holding up ANOTHER bill which pertains to solar and wind energy. Included in the email were all of her contact numbers.

Deja vu - all over again.

July 18 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

A certain careful handling of business takes over when something makes us feel limited. Whether it is time or money or people, we know they must be utilized in the right spirit. As the Indian says, "Everything is in a circle." Whatever we set in motion comes back, and often shocks us by how quick and with what impact.

Such things teach us to stop and think--to consider the use of a word or an act--and even a dollar. When we have material needs, a single dollar given where the need is great can multiply and come back to us a hundredfold. Even treating someone kindly is an investment, and though it may seem insignificant, when we are weary and sore, we learn how important it is.

You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle.

EXTRA FRIDAY July 18 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's HAHS list of Senators is NOW posted below and at this DB Thread:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=26552.1

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their 2008 WHITE PAPER are at the DB Thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that all three former horse slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently; and Cavel (Dekalb IL) lost its appeal and the US Sup Ct just refused further review. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Friday 7/18/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

extra Friday 7/18 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

HS History - Only Sen. Murray cosponsored S 1915 in the 109th Congress. Sen. McCaskill voted favorably on S 311 to get it out of the Senate Committee it was in.

IMO - Thank Sen. Murray for being a cosponsor of S 1915 - but tell her people: "WHY NOT NOW?!?!?! DO THE RIGHT THING AGAIN!"

WASHINGTON
Senator Patty Murray (cosponsored S 1915)
Fax: 202-224-0238 Phone: 202-224-2621

Fax: 202-228-6326 Phone: 202-224-6154
717 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-2504

(Note from CJ: I have been told by her staff that Sen. McCaskill will not cs S 311 because of her committee position; IMO acknowledge this to the aide/LD you talk to, and ask them to ask Sen. McCaskill to DO WHATEVER SHE CAN to try to get S 311 to a vote - including asking McCaskill to ask Sen. Harry Reid to try to move it along.)

MISSISSIPPI
Senator Roger F. Wicker
Fax: 202-228-0378 Phone: 202-224-6253
Courtyard Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-2403

IF you're done with today's ABR/AAHS Instructions & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to post 2 of the DB Thread noted above, for a good alternate target list of Senators compiled by AWI/SAPL.

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! Go get 'em.

THIS IS THE HOUSE THAT BARBARO BUILT

Alex, Eliza, Tim,& Jen brought us the foundation to build this house.

The Jackson's gave us the brick, the strongest ever made-BARBARO.

Eduardo kept the brick clean.

Mr. Matz & Peter shaped the brick.

Mr. Prado saved the brick from completely breaking when it fell.

Dr. Richardson & Dr. Anderson repaired the brick.

The brick WAS HELD together and new mortar was added-FOBs.

The brick was decorated by Kennett Florist.

A VERY strong HOUSE was built.

WE ARE THE HOUSE THAT BARBARO BUILT

WE SHALL NOT FAIL
WE SHALL NOT FALL

The FOUNDATION is still STRONG
WE are STILL HERE
WE WILL ALWAYS BE HERE
WE SHALL NOT BE TORN APART.

####
PS-seeing all the posse here made me quite the lonesome at 2:00am this morning. Y'all could have stood on a hill somewhere and hollared for me...DOOOR-UHHHH! (like my mama used to do when she wanted me to come runnin quick)
####

I still miss the Big Ole Boy Barbaro. I think that we have all been pulled into different directions by life circumstances whether we wanted to or not. I do know that if not for this site, most of us, if not all, would never have been aware of the horse slaughter/transport issue. We have had our eyes opened, and our guts torn more times than to count. We initially stood wide eyed and innocent, but no more. We are now knowledgable, capable and well versed to be able to go forth and speak our mind to spread our message to the world.

It will take scads more work to accomplish what we have set out to do, but what lofty goal doesn't?
We are all doing our very best to end this abomination. The deplorable, despicable act of slaughter will take many more lives before we are able to abolish it. I try to not let that awful fact influence how bright the outcome will eventually be. I guarantee that we are all working and doing our best. Keep on keeping on, you danged ole best folks in the entire universe!

The ball has long been rolling, we just need to see it hit it's mark.

AND IT'S A SUBLIME PERFORMANCE...........

When that picture came up on the DB during the rescue, I lost it. That sweet old mare. Those terrified babies. What would have happened to them if she had not corralled them and let them cluster and suckle?

I was signed on to MHR the day they weaned BabyB from Rosie: gotta happen. And of course, it was done with patience and skill and love.

But OMG. Even though BabyB could see her mother---at all times, the screaming was terrifying to me--uninitiated to this annual rite. I had no idea horses made this kind of sound.

THE REST OF JOE:
***************************************************
I got to meet 11 year old Caroline, cute as can be, and she handed me $60.00. Caroline said lets save a horse. A partnership was formed. Caroline, Tbfriends, and a wonderful lady from back east are now partners on Wendy, an older thoroughbred mare who also came from Turlock. Wendy is around 20, with a faded racing tattoo. She comes to us in poor shape.

Not only did Caroline contribute $60.00, she also wrote me a letter. I have permission to share this part with you:

This is the biggest event in my life. I went to San Diego Zoo last year and I thought that was the biggest event I ever had. But earning money to save the life of a mare is a home run. I have been waking up so excited, like my life counts for something. I promise Joe to earn more money to help with another horse. I love horses so much. It makes me sad that some horses are treated terrible. My best friend Jennifer wanted to help with Wendy, but she only had $1.50. Jennifer might get a job cleaning a house for her Aunt, so then she can help with the next horse. Thank you Joe for letting me be part of something so huge. I feel so happy for Wendy. Caroline.

Enjoy your beautiful Friday, and be sure to hug your horses. A special hello to Lorenzo and Stephanie, and I wish I could be there today. Your mom was the best.

Joe

Top Row: This is Promise, who needs a new home. He is located in Northern California. Promise is very kind, and he is free.

Bottom Left: Jodi never says no when I ask for help. Giving up her afternoon to transport horses for us.

Bottom Right: Say hello to Wendy, who sticks out her tongue at the camera. From 8 pictures, this one is the best. (gee, just how bad were the other 7?) Wendy loves peppermints and carrots.

###Jonna--the screaming of weaned foals and their moms. I remember this from when I was around moms and babies where I boarded my first horse, Nestor, who is now a brood gelding across the Rainbow Bridge.

Weaning time is where the old geldings ("old" in mind, not necessarily in body) come in handy. They are great comfort to the babies that don't understand what the HECK is going on and where their moms are.

Mothers, particularly old-timers (old in number of foals, not necessarily in body ;o) whinny awhile and then get on about the business of eating or sleeping or comparing notes with the other "newly bereft" mares. My experience was that the mares "got over it" rather quickly.

The babies took a little longer--but a "brood gelding" was there, big and gentle and comforting--to take the "pain" away.

###My experience is that the weaning process sounds more terrible than it is. The babies that are weaned at four months or so have learned about grass and buckets of goodies and people who bring them.

###That said, I cannot imagine how awful it is for the newly born babies to be torn from their mothers.

There is a special Hell for the people responsible. I am positive.

And there is a special field across the bridge for the palomino mare and her ilk who care for the babies that are left behind.

I am positive about THAT, too.

I have been called a pit bull...senior VP's would hide from me...not something I'm totally proud of, but my German SVP was so good to me and he demanded financial accountability from his managers...hence setting me loose to reconcile all the capital projects...Accounts Payable and Finance loved the fact that we all reconciled to the penny on all IT projects. Even though the corporate world holds no interest for me anymore, if Manuel would call and ask me to consider moving to Darmstadt...I'd give it some thought (but leave the Boys???? That would destroy me...) but would still say no. My place is here. Now that Stormy has begun to connect with us, I couldn't leave here even if I wanted to.

Ten Year old, EVENING ATTIRE will try again, on Saturday !

From Bloodhorse.com: Five years after his last appearance in the Breeders Cup, wouldnt it be something if ageless iron horse Evening Attire could make a return trip to Santa Anita? Thats exactly what the 10-year-old gelding has a chance to do July 19, as he goes to post in the $250,000 Greenwood Cup the first ever Breeders Cup Challenge Win and Youre In event at Philadelphia Park Casino & Racetrack.

Oh yes Dear Frens, wouldn't it be 'something,? Lets hold him up in our prayers.

To my fellow FsOB from Daryl:
Today I met with Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman. I gave him a list of requests pertaining to helping us get S. 311 moving. First, Senator Coleman is a supporter. He listens intently to everything I tell him. He truly cares. Many of you may remember I had a meeting with him last November in DC. When I went to his office the aide said the senator was called to The Farm Bill vote. He also said the senator requested I come down to the waiting room next to senate chambers. When the senator came out he did not shake my hand , he did not really look at me. He reached for my lapel where I was wearing an American Flag pin. It apparently tilted…..so he straightened it…….then smiled and tapped it. Then he shook hands. I will never forget that moment.
Today we talked about the bill, how to get things moving. My main theme was that our grassroots movement has hit a wall. We are falling on deaf ears. I told him of meetings I have had with senators and house reps that knew nothing about the bill….although their offices had all the pertinent information. I told him of the frustrations and impending loss of involvement because people are tired of this congress not listening.
We talked about Larry Craig and his position. I mentioned to the senator Larry Craig’s intent to derail S. 311 last December in senate chambers. I told him I had written a point-counterpoint letter that I hand delivered to senate leaders and Larry Craig. He asked for a copy and I gave it to him. I asked the senator to get me and a few other FsOB a meeting with Craig. He said he will pursue that. No promises that this meeting will take place………..but I know the senator will pursue it. I also asked if he could leverage meetings with fence-sitting senators and he will talk with his peers.
I told him that I understand the need for insulation elected officials require. There are a lot of wackos out there. But we, the Fans Of Barbaro, have earned the right to meet with our elected officials because we have been professional and educated. He agreed.
Yes, I told him of the Fans Of Barbaro, how the website evolved from daily updates on Barbaro to horse welfare issues and finally horse slaughter. I told him of the people here who are doing this for the following: horse slaughter is immoral and it’s anti-American. I closed by saying we are doing this on our own nickel, no one will profit/gain. We are doing this because it’s RIGHT! He requested the ABR website link, asked me to write it on a piece of paper he handed me. He said he would be reading ABR. (So, best behavior everyone. LOL).
Martita always tells me: “Inch by inch.” By being relentless I have penetrated the insulation and made some progress. You need to be relentless also. You need to get on your elected officials and get those August meetings. If you get one and want me to attend, I will certainly do so. This is the only way, face-to-face. We have the right and if we don’t exercise that right…………horses will continue to die. Anyway, that’s my “Inch!” Another inch closer.
Many people ask where my drive comes from. I’m a private person but I will divulge where most of that drive comes from…….in hopes it motivates others to never quit this fight.
I’m a single parent. My ex beat my 2 children when they were little…..about the time they were 4 and 6. I got custody in 1981. First real step on the path to hating abuse…….being introduced to it first hand. And so close to the heart.
Four years ago I adopted a cat from a no-kill shelter. She had been abused before she spent one year in the shelter. Over the years she and I were very close….it took her time to warm up to my other cat, Pepin, but that came after time. The following is not for sympathy: when I got home from the Barbaro Celebration late Monday night, I found my adopted cat, Callie, dead. I did not get to say goodbye……and I have been looking at that as a form of abuse. I have always held my fur children when it was time to say goodbye, thanking them for what they gave me, telling them I love them. I did not get to do that Monday.
I think of the abuse she must have taken before she came to me. And it tears my heart apart. I wanted to apologize to her for what someone did to her. Just like I do every time I go see Gunner at the rescue ranch I have him at. I hug him, immediately, and apologize to him and his brothers and sisters, for what we have done, and continue to do.
My oldest granddaughter, Shelby is 4 and a half. She loves visiting her mom and dad’s two horses. She cries when they leave. I asked her if she wanted to play golf with grandpa when she gets older. She says she’ll be too busy riding and caring for horses.
Okay, that right there, adding in all of the above about abuse, no way will I let her grow up in an America that continues to abuse it’s horses. My promise to anyone reading this, and my promise to Shelby, this horrific practice will stop. My granddaughter will not see the videos you and I have witnessed, she will not read daily accounts of abuse, neglect and torture.
I will not relent. I’ve just started to fight.
Ending horse slaughter is also a step in the right direction to eliminating an awful lot of abuse to our other animals. Inch by inch! I will continue my efforts for as long as it takes.
I am a different person than I was before my meetings with Senator Pryor and the agriculture committee in Missouri. No more Mr. Nice Guy. My skin has toughened and thickened. I will remain professional but no more of playing congress’ games. We have earned the right to get this done by meeting with elected officials. I am exercising that right. Will you?
Love to all FsOB!
Daryl

She's at peace now, and she is at the Bridge chasing butterflies with so many of our little ones, you've known all of them through your kinship here. She's happily basking in warm sunshine and purring, waiting for the day of reunion.

#### Dear Fren Daryl,

It was very nice to meet you, in person, at Timothy's.

Thank you for your valiant efforts. (Oh yes, we must keep that flag straight). America must get it right. We would not be here, were it not for the horse.

Welcome to Senator Coleman. The Frens of Barbaro appreciate your taking time to come here and learn of what we are all about. Thank you, Sir, for your kind attention, and for your help.

Daryl, I deeply sympathize with your sad loss of Callie. There are no words of comfort that can really ease the pain. Breaking is something that a loving heart must go through from time to time. Yet is is worth it all to have one. We have surely shared that together here, haven't we?

There are no 'good-byes,' Dear Fren...only 'fare wells' and gentle send offs. Callie knew that you loved her. Please believe that she knew, and trusted in your kindness. Yours is a true and genuine heart...a kind one, that even we here, across so many miles appreciate. You did well by her. You will see her again. They are only a thought away.

Hug your little ones for all of their 'Aunties.' They have a good Dad, and Grampa, who is a tireless knight.

Thank you for this account of your latest efforts. We applaud and support you. You are one of our heroes.

Because of my work situation, I cannot make trips to DC, but I promise to step up my correspondences, and help to spread the word.
Please count me in as one to be called upon. I will do what I can, to continue to look for more and better ways to serve the cause of the great legacy of BARBARO...a noble, just, cause for kindness in this too often cruel otherplace.

Your FOB Fren, O

Amen

Dearest Daryl,

My deepest sympathy for the physical loss of your sweet Callie. Her spirit is with you, she will forever live in your heart. She knew love because of you, she knew caring because of you, she lived safe and secure because of you.

You are an amazing man. Your passion, commitment, and tireless efforts to institute change in this country is more than admirable. You are our hero! Thank you Daryl!

It is wonderful to know that your morals and values are being passed on to your children and grandchildren. I know they are and will continue to be amazing people, like you.

Daryl:
Try not to worry about what you did not get a chance to say to Callie. You have been saying these things to her with your love and care and attention from the time you brought her home. Animals don't look back, IMHO. They live in the moment. And in the moment she passed, all she knew was the life she lived as your beloved companion animal.

And like we always say when someone loses a retired racing greyhound: Callie made room for the same loving life for another cat who so needs you.

As for the rest: I'll be with you. I have been from the beginning. If I do not vent once in a while--to people who GET IT--I'll just back off from sheer frustration.

But I'm here. I'm marching. I pray along with everyone else, I am sure, that we get this done this year.

I wish more people KNEW horses. If America rounded up it's stray dogs and pound captures, shoved them cheek to jowl in a cattle carrier, one on top of another, and trucked them hundred; t
housands of miles to a grisly fate in a CN or MX slaughterhouse, Americans would be lined up, holding hands, preventing these trucks from passing.

The thought of Belgians dining on American dog has a lot more clout than the idea of horse flesh for sale as the delicacy du jour. So maybe we need to find a way to help Americans understand what horses ARE, what they mean to their people, the levels of trust and forgiveness that they will exhibit given kindness and good food and vet care...

Just a thought. Anyhow. I must now try to coax 15 retired racing greyhounds into eating dinner. it is beastly hot here in Syracuse, and no one has much or an appetite.

You know, I always have held a special place in my heart for you. My mother's family are all Minnesotans. She is the only one who left. Cloquet, Thief River Falls, Grigla, Moose Lake, Round Lake, Luvuern, Mankato--all iconic points on my childhood map.

You Minnesotans are a tough lot. I am glad it is you leading the charge. That old German and Scandinavian warrior stock.

Tell us how to fly. We'll be there. At least I will.

Why are we holding the Olympics in China? The rest of the world loves dogs and the dogs in China are now suffering because the Olympics are being held there. I guess we shouldn't even discuss human rights?

I for one am boycotting the Olympics (and I've watched and followed every year for the last 20 years).

Subject: Cloud's Herd Removal Alert

Act Now to Stop Removals from Cloud's Herd

Dear Friends of Cloud and his herd;

You are the greatest!! Your emails, calls and letters have gotten the attention of BLM and now I am asking you again to fight for Cloud, his family and his herd.

Cloud and his band enjoying one of the remarkably huge snowdrifts atop the mountain earlier this month. Photo by Deb Little.

The BLM has issued an Environmental Assessment (EA) which is separate and apart from the HMAP long range planning document that so many of you commented on earlier this month. This EA calls for the removal of up to 38 wild horses from thePryor Mountains and comments are due on Friday, July 25. Removals could begin as soon as the end of July.

The Billings BLM has characterized this removal to the National BLM office as an ?emergency?. In other words, they have said that the Pryor wild horses are in danger unless they are removed. This is laughable, of course, based on the health of the wild horses and the wonderful condition of their range.

But, Cloud and the wild horses of Montana's Pryor Mountains are in danger----not from staying at home on their mountain. They are in danger if BLM removes them.

E-mail Jim Sparks, Billings BLM Field Manager with your comments or call him at 406-896-5013. You can also e-mail Don Glenn, Division Cheif of the Wild Horse and Burro Program. Additionally, please call the toll free BLM number in Washington DC: 1-800-710-7597 to speak out for Cloud's herd.

Your message should be simple, polite, and clear:
There is no emergency on the Pryors. The horses are in great shape and so is the range. There is no need for this action, particularly when a clear danger awaits the horses if they are removed. BLM has indicated that they may euthanize the wild horses they have in holding and there is currently no adoption demand.

What is particularly disturbing about this EA is that the BLM makes no mention of what they would do with the horses after they are removed!

Please share this message with your friends and family and anyone else who can help us.

Happy Trails!

My thoughts are with Daryl. Callie was very lucky that you saved her and gave her such a wonderful life full of warmth, love, and comfort. I am so sorry for your lose, Daryl.

##
Padme as keeper of the money .....I'd trust her! Heck, she took great care of my students' donations! How's that for a testimonial? LOL!!

##
Although I purchased "The First Saturday in May" as soon as it was available on DVD, I just watched it today. I LOVED it! I felt they handled the Preakness beautifully, and I just loved the final part of Matz's stables looking forward to the future.
Take care Famblee!

Hiya, FsOB! Thinking of all of you tonight and hoping that the weekend is a refreshing one of us all. I loved the posting of Joe Shelton's blog about young Caroline coming to TB Friends with $ for "Wendy" (who is named after Caroline's grandmother). What a loving tribute from a young girl! Gives one hope in the future of this country, doesn't it? I say "Caroline for President in 2040!" Peace, RMH

#### To Janice: Sending good thoughts your way as you prepare for Kaiser's procedure on Monday.
Hallelujah, our FOB Dora J. Crow visited the Big Board today!
To Martita: A reassuring poem this evening, Martita.
To Daryl S.: My sympathies to you and Pepin as you deal with Callie's passing. My late Husky Illya (who was highstrung from the night that he was born) died on 08/27/2001 while Brent & I were on a day trip to the beach in RI. Illya was with his sister, Pushinka, and I had some measure of comfort in that. But I understand how difficult and shocking it is to come home to a deceased beloved animal. Peace to you, Daryl. Callie will never really leave you!
To Joan Roya: My thoughts are with you and your husband as he deals with the sudden death of some of his coworkers. Truly a tragedy for those young, healthy workers and for their families! ####

Oh YES Dear Frens,

This is an urgent call for help...

Please, everyone call and e-mail at the numbers and the e-dresses given by Fren Rene Antaya:

E-mail Jim Sparks, Billings BLM Field Manager with your comments or call him at 406-896-5013. You can also e-mail Don Glenn, Division Cheif of the Wild Horse and Burro Program. Additionally, please call the toll free BLM number in Washington DC: 1-800-710-7597 to speak out for Cloud's herd.

Your message should be simple, polite, and clear:
There is no emergency on the Pryors. The horses are in great shape and so is the range. There is no need for this action, particularly when a clear danger awaits the horses if they are removed.

...Please be as vigorous in this as you are for the slaughterbound TBs and feedlot horses.

Cloud, his family, and all of our wild herd out there are in immediate peril. We MUST act now, and encourage others to this emergency. AND SPREAD THE WORD AS BEST YOU CAN.

Thank you. The Love of the Frens will make the difference.

Goodnight...Sweet dreamings.

Your FOB Fren, O

### Not to brag, but my baby girl who I raised just ran a good second up at Prairie Meadows in the slop. Her name is Shaconage and I am so proud of her. She came back safe and sound. Jen

Cheryl, if you haven't seen the info yet - on the DB I saw that Hawty Creek came in 7th (out of 12), and that Back in Time, owned by Lael Stables and trained by Michael Matz, won. Hope Hawty is safe and sound!
