Barbaro Updates: 627

updates are now here.

Update 3727: Well it seems decided, Curlin is off to New York this weekend: Curlin Headed to Belmont for Man o'War, excerpt:

The decision to point for the Arc is a simple one, the trainer said. "I think the Arc is one of the greatest races in the world and we're hoping to prove that Curlin is one of the greatest horses in the world," Asmussen said. "If we can establish a grade I form on him this Saturday in the Man o'War, we'll make arrangements from there to get him to Chantilly and start our preparations with him to be comfortable going right-handed. That will start Saturday, and if all goes well we'll still have a lot to do."

If everything works out in the Man o'War, a race Asmussen said Curlin doesn't have to win but has to "look the best," the colt would likely prep for the Arc in the Prix Foy (Fra-III) at Longchamp.

As for the decision to run Curlin on the turf, Asmussen said, "It's for the horse's legacy. To have won the Breeders' Cup Classic in such a strong running last year, and to win the Dubai World Cup, I think international racing is going to be very strong in the future and I want Curlin to be in the forefront of that movement. The Classic being run on a synthetic surface was not a factor. With what we'd like to get done with Curlin is something nobody's done before. Back-to-back Breeder' Cup winners is pretty amazing in one sense, but it's been done before."

Update 3726: Another warm morning this morning at Woodbine. Light rain fell for the first hour which was welcome relief from the humidity (but it is still not as bad as it can get in the Mid Atlantic region for sure). I had seven sets, five before the break and two after the break. A very straightfoward morning, with each horse galloping nicely.

The second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown is on Sunday, Jen has all the news: HOLD THE FORT.

Update 3725: This week's OTTB of the Week is Master's Choice who is now an advanced level event horse. We have one more selection to make before voting begins to determine the winner of the $500 prize.

Please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! May everyone have a wonderfully productive day. It's going to be very warm here in CT this week, let's hope that folks are considerate of their animals during the heat & humidity. Alex, any recent updates on Big Brown and how his feet are treating him?

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyK and the rest of the gang in Equine Heaven.

For them:

MORNING POST/S

STRATEGY FOR TUESDAY, JULY 8

Both the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), have the power to bring the bill up for consideration in their respective chambers, therefore it is vital that as many people as possible, both at the grassroots level and internally within Congress, insist that the House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader do everything in their power to afford the bills legislative due process and bring them immediately to the floor for a vote.

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) DC Phone: 202-225-4965 Fax:202-225-4188
Senate Majority Leader - Harry Reid (D-NV) DC Phone: 202-224-3542 Fax:202-224-7327

It is our understanding that more co sponsors would certainly facilitate our efforts with Speaker of the House Pelosi and draw the much needed attention to this legislation. For this reason, we will be posting the names of Representatives that we will be targeting.

I had this dream/vision the first time one of the ditsy dogs got me up last night/this morning.
I saw us, each leading a horse--event horses, TBs, drafts, minis, paints, arabs--horses of all sizes, colors, and on the side of each, in chalk, the going rate for horse flesh in sale to the KBs.

And we would be at the Capitol. In DC. Where the Constitution granted that people would elect officials TO DO THEIR WILL.

We'd dress in red or black--not sure which. And we would be quiet and respectful--even if we no longer respect our DULY ELECTED OFFICIALS.

God. How old we do this? Could we do this? There are so many local rescue groups--we don't need to have a horse from AZ--for instance (unless Barb wants to.)

It would be a horse picket line.It would be great press. Great photo opps.... Daryl and John H would be there...

COULD WE DO THIS?

That road trip segment of course goes with the (unless Barb wants to take a lettle road trip with Punky and Chunky.) part.

Brain working too fast this morning.

Can you see it? All those beautiful rescued horses? Different sizes and colors...I will never forget the first time I saw a beautiful chestnut gelding--probably a TB--being lead away at a KB auction. Big white chalked numbers on his flank:
41 cents (the cent mark: have no idea where that resides on this keyboard.)

It made me physically ill. Know he was long gone.

Anyhow. IF we did such a thing, we could have a good director roll tape on it and then have him/her cut :30 and :60 commercials using that A & B roll.

And we could intercut terrible stuff if we needed to--depending on how furious we are by then with our DULY ELECTED OFFICIALS.

Just thinking a out loud. WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT. I am convinced. I am trying to be a good, with-the-program FoB. I am trying to think of options. Peaceful assembly.

Anyhow:now this is giving me a BIG headache. See what happens when you get to be an old board?

Good morning all FOBs -

I have a couple of rescue stories I want to share with you.

A horse on a farm not too far away where I live was so neglected that all the bones were almost completely showing. This wonderful person I know somehow got hold of this horse and nursed him back to health. His name is "Boo" and if you would see Boo now, you wouldn't know it's the same horse. He's completely filled out and his eyes are bright and most important of all, he's so happy.

The second rescue: A wonderful 5 year old cat who was declawed and spayed was put outside (day and night) for the first time in her life. After being totally in the house all this time, she was so frightened her eyes were as big as saucers whenever cars went by. She had no way to defend herself without having front claws. I already have 2 cats and kept trying to find a good home for her.

I was finally successful and this wonderful older couple I know very well took her and now she is completely happy again and they love her to pieces. Of course I'm happy too as I was so worried about her.

Have a wonderful day and keep calling, writing, e-mailing that Horse Slaughter must end!

Fan of Barbaro forever!

Good Morning Famblee

My deepest condolences to Verna. I know the grief can be thick. There are no healing words only know that we, your famblee, feel your pain.

BarbM....always thoughts and prayers for Nala and Over Enough. I do think of you all often.

I have no solutions or words of wisdom. I am perplexed that legislation with all this support remains in the doldrums. Before Barbaro I was not political. Our cause has enlightened me and I am so disappointed. Does not mean I will QUIT for I am not a quitter. How many Clouds (my boy), BabyBs, Spirits, BBBs & BBGs have we lost for no reason except greed? Makes me sick.

Please support the rescues. They house the horses that we have saved. Nearly $20 bucks per bale for hay, that's what MHR is paying. The rescues have no control of feed cost but they must feed our horses.

###
Verna...you are in our hearts...

####
Question:...are there parts of the country that hay is cheaper....is there anyway we can get our hands on the hay that is cheaper...and buy it and stash it away....somewhere...

###
Jonna...take two aspirins and keep thinking....I agree...we have to figure out someway to shame Congress in front of the public..

Get someone to document this and put on national tv and radio and out to the public.

####
If I had my way....Congress' ratings 11 percent???
we need a clean sweep on alot of them....and I can think of a few I would love to start with first.

They need to listen to us...we are asking to pass the Barbaro Bill...and save these beautiful horses from slaughter.

####
They need to figure out a way...birth control or something for the wild mustanges.

I LOVE MY COUNTRY....I am ashame of how my government is handling things....

Good Morning Gang.

I don't know why hay is $20 for MHR. Must be the 'far west' thing going on.

We CAN find it cheaper. But it's going to be far away from MHR. Does anyone know a hauler in states east of Nevada??? Is there a trucker somewhere looking for work? If anyone knows a truck driver, please talk to him/her about hauling hay. Let's start there. Look in your newspapers. Sometimes you'll see a classified for hauling. If we can find someone, then we'll see where we can get some cheaper hay, or whatever combo MHR needs. Let's put our heads together.

God Speed to the firefighters from New Mexico and Arizona, leaving today to help fight the California fires. It's going to be very bad this week. Very hot. Very dry. With high winds.

####
Yes...may God watch over those that are in the path of wildlife...I am so worried about the animals and wildlife.

###
Margie...now we are cooking! lol....
we can find parts of the country that has plenty of hay....and buy it and transport it to places and help our rescues....we can do this...

####
Jonna...and others....we have to show our public the shame and nightmares and how low people are to send horses to horse slaughter...

thank you...I just love you, FamBlee.

Posted by: joan roya at July 8, 2008 3:56 PM

#### Joan, we just need a hauler to help. Let's keep oue eyes and ears open. And ask around. It never hurts to ask. Even if we think it sounds foolish. We just never know until we try.

The much better priced hay might be 10-12 hours away from MHR.

Posted by: MargieinNM at July 8, 2008 4:05 PM

Aside from the June/July wonderful prizes for the MHR Hay Drive... ALL BARBARO!,there is the Cafe MHR which offers meals to the wonderful horses. You can take the horse or horses of your choice out for a meal of either a salad featuring Timothy Hay or a fruit salad, or take him/her out for a nice dessert. Another choice is a tip to Nerdy Ned for his hard work at keeping the MHR CAFE going for the month of July.

Hi Everyone:
Warm and sunny in Minnesota…finally. Parts of the state, too much rain, floods…………other parts, drought.
And, of course, a drought in the hearts and heads of our elected officials. I know many people are discouraged, frustrated, downright mad as we have not seen any progress in the senate since November and very few new co-sponsors in the house. Is this our fault? If not, who’s to blame?
Simple: The 110th Congress! This is a do-nothing congress. While we are frustrated that there is a major stall in our efforts, we are not alone. Governor Schwarzenegger said in an interview last week that he is extremely frustrated with this congress. He told of bills that were up for extension, that have been debated for over a year. No progress. Some of these bills affect our war veterans. This do-nothing congress has limited passion for our bravest………..so where do our horses fit on their agendas? Oh yes, Senator McCain will be in St. Paul tomorrow. What the hell……..why isn’t he in DC? It’s the middle of the week! Sure, he’s running for president, but he has a job to do as senator. For over a year, many elected officials were running around the country in their attempt to win their party’s nomination for president. Wow! Time away from DC means time away from their job! Pelosi said she was putting this congress back on a five day work week. I’d like to know her definition of a “DAY!”
My point: We have done an incredible job, we really have. We have broken through a lot of barriers that groups working on other bills would like to have done. Our key is our passion. Coupled with the fact that we are grassroots and none of us will profit or gain from this. In other words, we are doing this for the right reasons.
I have been to DC six times. I have met senators and house reps…….and of course aides. I have learned a lot. When I inventory those meetings I learn more of what I must do in future meetings. And my approach has changed dramatically.
I am working with a senator who I have asked for guidance and to help get meetings with fence-sitting senators. Right here I must apologize for the secrecy of the senator’s name. That is the senator’s request. I do not believe in secrecy when we are working as a group. So please, I ask your understanding.
In past meetings with elected officials and aides, I presented information. As time went on, I realized this was going to go only so far. I was met with arrogance, condescending attitudes and stupidity. I know many of you have the same experiences. A group of people who went to DC in March that met with, I believe Senator Kay-Bailey Hutchison, was given the ultimate slap in the face. The aide marched them down a hall and had their meeting…………….in the hall!!!!!
Okay, enough of this. Done being nice. I meet the senator I have mentioned. I decide to lay it all on the line. I tell the senator what I think of this congress. I tell the senator the senate body is a disgrace. I tell the senator that the fence-sitters in the senate know nothing about the horse slaughter. I tell the senator stories of senators I had met that could not answer questions directly related to information that had been sent to their offices………..for over a year and a half. I explain that, for the most part, we are being ignored. And that is a crime. This senate body is performing a criminal act. By ignoring the very people who send them to DC to echo their voices, to represent their wishes, they are taking the American people out of the system. I told the senator, even though this senator is for the bill, “And that means you too! You do not know the facts. You do not understand the depth of the problem. I don’t want to hear, anymore, from you or any other senator, that there is over 1800 bills introduced in this congress and therefore you can’t know everything. You have a job to do….and that means knowing the facts……..especially on the issues that are very sensitive to the American people.” I then told him that every aide I talk to in DC tells me that phone calls, e-mails and faxes about horse slaughter are number 3 on the volume list………right behind the war and immigration. And the vast, vast majority of the calls are for passing the legislation that ends horse slaughter. Yet, we are ignored.
I’ve got the ear of the senator. I ask three questions……………..the senator can’t answer them. I’m upset………..the senator knows it. I said this is what is wrong….you are working with the material which is “surface material.” Time for the next step. Videos, pictures, facts, Michelle Tolley……..and other stories like hers. I show the senator that Americans are stepping up to help the horses. I tell the senator what Michelle has done over the last two years to save nurse mare foals…..working with Pure Thoughts, explaining how kbs work, Sugarcreek rescue, etc. etc. Firmly I said, “I want you to feel what we feel, touch what we touch, smell what we smell. It’s the only way you will help……because you and the other senators have limited information/knowledge and you are approaching this on an intellectual level, which, in the end, you must do. But on the way to the end, you have got to feel this. Feel, controlled feel, is a pathway to intellect. You have to use all that you are to understand this issue.”
The senator is working this……..dialogue with other senators. And we are in continuing dialogue….often with the local COS…..but they are working it.
I said this to John Holland after our my first visit to DC a year ago: one way to get this done. Meet senators face-to-face. And that attitude has not changed.
I posted a few months ago that August is “District Work Period!” Elected officials go back home and “work” there. I said that anyone who has a senator or house rep that is not on board……get on their calendar………….now! I know of a few people who have done this. I hope others have as well.
Everyone has the right to meet their elected officials. You need a mental toughness to break down their barriers of insulation……..meaning do not take no for an answer. Meaning if you must remind whoever you are talking to that they work for you, then remind them.
This has been an incredibly emotional roller coaster we have all been on. For me personally, I had a breakdown in February, got terribly sick. I know this fight, the emotion of it all, finally took it’s toll. But I never relented…………fought to get to the senator……and I never will relent. Barbaro called me to this fight…as he did all of you. Now, his blood runs through my veins. I will never give up. I accept the defeats as a learning process. Learn from the defeats the adjustments that need to be made.
Do we need a new strategy? Yes! But don’t look at what we did in the past as failure. Anti-horse slaughter legislation has never had so much support in our federal government. In large part, because of our efforts. Our grassroots movement has accomplished an awful lot. In fact, I believe our past strategy has accomplished all it could………..which is a huge success. But now we must take this to a new level. We must strategize, come up with new ideas…..all of us. Teamwork got us this far……teamwork will get us to the next level.
Many DC aides, and a couple house reps told me that many in DC look at this issue only as “overly emotional women wanting to save the horses!” In fact, Sherry was with me when a COS said that very thing. Yup, what a horrible attitude……..but face the facts. It is a perception in DC. So deal with the facts. We need more men. A lot more men involved. Get husbands, boyfriends, sons, your sons’ friends……to start making calls.
Get your veterinarian, whether small animal or large animal vet, to compose a letter saying he/she does not agree with the AVMA. Send it to your DC contacts. It’s powerful. Attack our enemies! AVMA is one of them.
Invite your senator and house rep on a field trip to a rescue. Invite them to Canada to enter a slaughterhouse. It shows you mean business.
I have invited my senator to the Barbaro Celebration this weekend. It did peak interest in that I echoed the “Feel it, smell it” attitude needed. I told the senator about the FsOB, the money raised, the horses saved. I said, We are doing the work your senate body should be doing.”
Hay, we have had a lot of people sign up for Mike Rea’s golf event this Saturday. Even if you don’t play golf, please stop by, say hi to Mike, maybe participate in one the fun contests we will have.
This event is merely another function of Barbaro’s work. Two weeks ago, this event was going nowhere. NOWHERE! We were ready to cancel. Then BOOM! About five days ago people started signing up, hole sponsorships started selling and donations coming in. I’m proud of the Minnesota FsOB. I e-mailed them and asked for donations. Boy, did they come through. Lots of $$ for Mike.
My belief: Barbaro intervened! His work is never done. He is relentless. He is powerful. And we are him. We are powerful. With him as our leader, keeping his memory alive in our souls, keeping his tasks as our targets, we will end horse slaughter.
Barbaro was……is a messenger. And another of his messages: “Stay together. I brought you together to help my brothers and sisters and you have. But there is more to do. Stay together and finish the tasks. I will help! I am part of each of you! I have been since that fateful day. And I’m proud of all of you.”
And the team leaders……all the leaders………are incredible. They have taken on monumental tasks that required a lot of sacrifice. They deserve our praise……..and thanks. Deep, heartfelt thanks. Let’s continue to support them, and each other, with new ideas. Let’s band together to further the accomplishments of this incredible group. Leaders, all of you, my deepest appreciation.
All right, sorry for the long post. Just know that I will never, never, never quit. And I will grow stronger and do better. The real turning point for me was the ag meeting in Missouri. How those condescending morons treated Jennifer…..hearing their attitudes toward horses……..disrespectful to our side…….a new me emerged. I take no crap from any elected official. Ask the senator I’m working with someday. Talk about blistered ears. LOL!
Right now I have more work to do to get ready for Mike’s golf event. Then, I need to go practice. Sherry and Mercy are going to caddy for me. My big staff bag weighs about 50 pounds. Heat and humidity……so what? They’re tough…they’ll handle it. LOL!
Love to everyone in Barbaro’s family.
Daryl

### I just bought grass hay out of field (loaded with tractor) for $4 a bale. We had none last year and overabundance this year. In MO, that seems to be the going rate for grass hay. the guy I bought from says he has enough that he will have it available all winter for $4.50 out of barn. It is the competitive price right now. If someone had a semi- they could load it up and still be alright if they didnt have to go to far. Jen

Great post Daryl. But this makes me ill. This reminds me once again that we are just taxpayers in a frakkin country run by old while men.

What have we been fighting for SO LONG: our stature as human beings in the US. American women
have less clout than women in many other countries and it is pathetic.

And here we go again. "overly emotional OLDER women" is probably what they said...Daryl's a Minnesotan and those guys are polite.

Just another case of "Git the Menfolks!!" This truly makes me NUTS. and I'm done for the day. Yes, Daryl this has made many of us ill. And today, when it's 90 and I have no central AC, I just won't deal with it. Until we have women in power in this country, we're going nowhere. And God Love her works, but I'm not talking about Angelina Jolie, Oprah, et al.

To those to whom much is given, folks, much is expected...so it all should even out. But where it comes to American women, it's the same &@&%, different day.

Love you my dear touch as nail, soft as hummingbirds FoB women. xxooj

Thanks Jen and Joan. There ARE good prices out there. There has been NO DROUGHT this past year in NM and CO. There is so much hay and alfalfa in S.Colorado that it is baled and just laying in the fields. If there is a hauler to get it to Nevada, MHR can get a deal. We may need volunteers to get it loaded. The rancher won't do it because he has no help. It's just him.

I NEED JOE, AND THEN I'M TURNING THE PUTER OFF FOR THE DAY.
************************************************
Tuesday, July 8th... Not sure if it is smoke or heat, but our dial up computer is disfunctional. The man inside the little speakers keeps saying Goodbye. I must type fast, which is like asking my dog Jewels to chew with his mouth closed.

Never seen life this yucky. Smoke so thick your eyes hurt. Later today we could be 108 degrees. 109 for tomorrow. Fires all over California. Yesterday at our front gate we greeted two more horses who need a place to stay. A major fire creeping closer to their home.

I cancelled our farrier Tim Gee for today. Kids who live in a youth shelter were scheduled to visit, and learn about horses. The kids have been told to come next week instead.

This morning I wanted to tell you about a girl who lives in the hills above Vacaville. Last month she graduated from high school. This month she is on her third rescued horse. All three horses have been thoroughbreds. One came from an auction in Roseville. One came from an auction in Turlock. And last week, from horse killer Wade Giles, I bought for this girl a beautiful filly who recently raced at a fair in Pleasanton.

The horse from Roseville has a new home. So too the horse from Turlock. The girl rises at 6:00 each day and rides her current rescue. Then it is off to her day job at a grocery store. Back home, and the girl continues to work with her horse.

She wants to know, how can she do this full time? Where will money come from? Her biggest worry: will she grow sour from never ending sadness?

18 years old, and wondering if she is going to grow sour?

There is barn sour with rescue folks. Pushing that huge rock uphill. Support comes from other rescue folks.

Nikki and Tara also live in Vacaville, and both rescue horses. They know each other from attending auctions. Neither girl has a website. No pats on the back from well wishers. Nikki and Tara both have day jobs. Supporting their own cause. The 18 year old girl who last month graduated from high school was able to meet Nikki and Tara. They ate combination plates at Chevys, and talked for more than two hours.

Yesterday on the phone the 18 year old girl who last month graduated from high school tells me she has been refueled. Her tank is full. She has never felt such energy. She walked out of Chevys feeling like the world is all hers. From a distance her parents have always supported her dreams. But it was Nikki and Tara who dared her to reach for the stars. The girl now has a support group. No more being barn sour.

And from her energy on the phone my gas tank was also refueled. Over 120 horses on my ranch. Hot thick smoke. But who cares? Lets go save another horse.

When you are young the world is easy to conquer. Anything is possible. Keep plugging away, and dreams do come true. Especially with your own support group.

Enjoy your hot yucky Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Thanks, Daryl.

Emotional older women?? Like the one that was playing footsies in the airport bathroom??

OOPS! I'm sorry. That was a male Senator.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd, as you take me to where angels walk and I thank you, forever!

JONNA - Excellent thoughts you truly do have!!!
I CAN picture that beautiful parade of equines - a march on Washington!! A message to America!!
This past July 4th as I was watching the televised "A Capitol Fourth" and they were coming forth with all the many pieces from the avenues of history, I kept thinking to myself that I WISH WISH WISH they would include a segment devoted to America's Horses with a massive showing similar to what you wrote about today.
Not like I could actually go and be there right now but I sure was wishing I could be there with all of you . . . . a massive equine, FOB, and AAHS parade of sorts!!

And THANK YOU also to DARYL for that excellent and inspiring post!

I know it sometimes feels like the horizon is dim, but we are FOBs and we know better, we were and are inspired by Barbaro and Barbaro's legacy is eternal, and we are the Barbaro Nation, we are his voice - the voice for all the horses.
Oh gosh, right now as I'm sitting here saying this, I'm getting this massive visual of all of us together united doing something similar to that song some years back "We Are The World" . . . C.J. could lead us!!!
Well anyway, no, we WILL continue to march on, for Barbaro, for all of them!!
(Sorry, I didn't mean to run on here but well you all just really inspire me and that combined with my love for Barbaro and all the equines. . .)

Continuing to send rainbows, eights, hearts, and positive thoughts to our own ANGEL DEE, and thanks again JONNA for the updates!! I did send Angel Dee a note via snail mail to let her know we were all with her, but it will be so great if she can be back here with us tomorrow!

Holding hands, paws, hooves with everyone here in the Barbaro Nation (two and four-footed), you're the best!

Prayers continue always for all of you and yours.

Love you all,
Lou Ann

P.S. Got to see the movie "The Long Shot" last evening on the Hallmark channel . . . .
And oh yes the tears were flowing.
The Hallmark Channel is apparently running equine and Western theme movies at 9 p.m. EST all through this month.

Hay, FOB's!

Heck, I'm an emotional older woman and proud of it.There is an Herbalist/Healer named Susun Weed in NY State and she asserts that women going thru menopause are actually in the most powerful time of their lives - when their inner wisdom surfaces...and many people have difficulty understanding it...in fact, many people fear a powerful woman. Having gone thru it myself, I can attest I do feel stronger and wiser...and part of that power is to allow ourselves to feel - feel with our heads, our guts, and most importantly...our hearts. We spend too much time burying our emotions and when they emerge - many people can't handle it...or they see something in themselves they wish they could express.

But there is no reason for people to fear powerful women...we should be taking steps to utilize our power for constructive, stewarding ends...and I, as one small voice, would like to see us bring our work here to the "next level" - one of visibility where we present our case, our views, our hopes, our love of Life in a way that is memorable, but with class and dignity.

Daryl, can we do this?

We are here out of Love...pure and simple. That is THE most powerful force in the Universe.

Should we give thought to forming a foundation or work even closer with AAHS???? I come from the holistic side of things - I have difficulty enough functioning in the business world anymore, but I would work for such a group in a heartbeat. I'd challenge any Congressperson to look me (in my role as a Equine Reiki Healer) in the eye and give me their reasons for not supporting the legislation...I would dare them to do that...with a smile on my face.

but would we be allowed to lobby or hire a lobbyist if we formed a foundation??? Need some legal eagles here...I'm just throwing out the ideas in the prayer that a seed is being planted. I feel the solution manifesting - that's the only way I can phrase it.

My two cents.

EXTRA TUESDAY July 8 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List NOW posted below and at this DB Thread:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=26166.1

(These are Senators today. Tomorrow HAHS will again be posting its special NBFA list. They are targeting Senators on TTh and Black Reps on MWF.)

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their 2008 WHITE PAPER are at the DB Thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that all three former horse slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently; and Cavel (Dekalb IL) lost its appeal and the US Sup Ct just refused further review. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Tuesday 7/08/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

extra Tuesday 7/08 HAHS nat'l target list

HS History: Though none of these Senators cosponsored S 1915 in the 109th Congress, they all have voted for anti-slaughter measures in the past.

NORTH CAROLINA
Senator Richard Burr
Fax: 202-228-2981 Phone: 202-224-3154

Fax: 202-228-2717 Phone: 202-224-5244
230 Dirksen Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-3703

IF you're done with today's ABR/AAHS Instructions & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to post 2 of the DB Thread noted above, for a good alternate target list of Senators compiled by AWI/SAPL.

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! Go get 'em.

July 8 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

When Pharaoh was asked when he wanted the plague of frogs removed from his land, he said, "Tomorrow." Why not this minute?

Why put off, delay, procrastinate, when the problem can be resolved this very minute? We can be smarter than Pharaoh if we choose things to be changed now. Now is the opportune time to speak the word, to work the word, to change destinations.

If not now, when? Because tomorrow, there will be another tomorrow---or someday. Borrowing from time delays living-but now changes the face of many things.

Why don't you talk and go straight, and let all be well?

HS History of the Reps on today's (Thesday July 8) ABR Strategy list -

All voted YES on 249 in the 110th Congress except Mahoney (FL) who voted NO. None cosponsored 503 in the 109th. Their votes on 503 in the 109th are shown below. Mahoney is new to the 110th Congress so has no history with former 503 in the 109th.
Joe Baca CA (Y on 249; Y on 503)
Phone: 202-225-6161 Fax: 202-225-8671
Aide: John Lowery

Ken Calvert CA (Y on 249; Y on 503)
Phone: 202-225-1986 Fax: 202-225-2004
Aide: Chris Marklund
Darrell Issa CA (Y on 249; Y on 503)
Phone: 202-225-3906 Fax: 202-225-3303
Aide: Veronica Wong

Mark Udall CO (Y on 249; N on 503)
Phone: 202-225-2161 Fax: 202-226-7840
Aide: Adam Jones
Chris Murphy CT (Y on 249; N on 503)
Phone: 202-225-4476 Fax: 202-225-5933
Aide: Jessie Young

Tim Mahoney FL (N on 249; new to 110th Congress)
Phone: 202-225-5792 Fax: 202-225-3132

IMO - THANK those who voted YES on HR 249 - but remind them that 249 only applies to WILD equines and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to end export.

Thank those who voted YES on HR 503; use their prior support of the slaughter ban bill when urging them to cosponsor now. "DO THE RIGHT THING AGAIN - support the slaughter/export ban - but this time, cosponsor...."

As for anyone who voted NO on 503 in the 109th - "changed circumstances call for a fresh look with an open mind" - and the closure of all the slaughter plants within the US is a huge changed circumstance, so that even though they may have opposed 503 in the past, they should support it now because of the export situation.

CeeJ and all, it would take so very much more than a boorish statement such as 'overly emotional women' to scare me off.

Actually, I feel sorry for those with that kind of attitude, and pray for them that someday they can connect. It must be a very troubled existence to wake up every day in that mind set.

Us women, we ARE Gaia. It's what we do, and have done for many, many centuries.

I feel a renewed strength knowing that's how we are thought of in Washington.

I'M SO EXCITED that Curlin will be in the Man O'War this Saturday (even though I can no longer watch racing for the sake of my mental health)!!!

There are many wonderful horses in that race...our beloved Blackie and Red Rocks, a fav of mine. I would be happy to see ANY of these three take the race, although since Mike Becker's dad will be in the winner's circle I would be sooooo happy for him to present the prize to CURLIN (and his connections, of course).

STRATEGY FOR WEDNESDAY JULY 9

Hiya, FsOB! I loved Margie in NM's posting timed at 11:06 PM. In my opinion, what this country needs more of is "overly emotional women"! Isn't it ironic that lobbyists and staffers would say this about us when the political process in the US Congress seems so filled with 'hot air', an eagerness to serve big financial interests, and acts of stonewalling as well as grandstanding....

But I don't want to minimize the work of many outstanding elected public officials. We in CT are blessed with several fine members in the US House, including Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro. And let's not forget that prior to Barbaro's life-altering injury on 05/20/2006 that this country was befouled by three slaughterhouses. Thank goodness for the Federal judicial branch of government; they have not abandoned our cause. And we need to make sure that the campaigns of Senators Obama and McCain don't forget the importance of passing S 311. Both of these Senators are cosponsors. So I'll try to keep my eyes on the prize, because those who oppose us want us to get discouraged and stop.

#### To Janice, thanks for helping keep us updated about Barb M's Nala and Over Enough.
