Barbaro Updates: 626

updates are now here.

Update 3724: I never realized I would enjoy learning the logic of the law: State Stumbling Blocks.

Denis of Cork, one of the leading 3yos with two "in the money" finishes in his two triple crown efforts has been sidelined: Denis of Cork Sidelined With Injury.

Update 3723: I am off to Saratoga for a day: Synthetic Surfaces on Agenda in New York.

Update 3722: More details on Curlin's work today and plans going forward: Curlin in Final Prep for Turf Debut.

Update 3721: Curlin had his final work before his first scheduled start on the turf (half in 50 and change): Curlin works. Next stop, turf. This appears a routine Asmussen work just before a race.

Big Brown also worked this morning at Aqueduct (5/8ths in 1:02 and change): Big Brown Breezes Five Furlongs.

Update 3720: A lovely morning at Woodbine this morning. It is supposed to get hot today, but I can take this heat for sure. I had six sets. Four before the break, and two after the break that went to the gate for some schooling. All went nicely. I was galloping one set in company with Mark, he was on another 2yo. Justin Stein (jockey) came galloping by. I mentioned to Mark that Justin seemed like a decent guy. Two minutes later a horse came flying towards us, Justin was brushing off the Polytrack. The last time I say something nice about someone if it means they will then hit the ground! All seemed fine though. Another monday!

Update 3719: The feature race yesterday at Belmont Park was the Grade 2 Dwyer. It was won in wire-to-wire fashion by the favorite, Mint Lane whose most recent effort was a runner up finish to Casino Drive in the Peter Pan: Mint Lane lands breakthrough graded stakes win in Dwyer.

A very cool way to help market OTTBs in the UK: Retired Racehorses Are Stars of the Show in Britain; Special Awards, Competitions Abound.

Please keep calling and writing.

Dear Frens and Famblee,
I am excited beyond belief to be able to announce, on behalf of our very own FoB Lyn Lifshin, her new book of poetry. Anyone who's read Lyn's tribute to Ruffian (The Licorice Daughter) will want her tribute to Lost In The Fog.
I have been anxiously waiting to tell you all. We were all set a couple of days ago, but then Lyn noticed some ordering information was left out. All ordering info is now here and you can order directly from the publisher. If you order BEFORE Sept. 10th, there are NO SHIPPING charges. You can order online or by check/money order also.

I cannot wait to get mine and read it! The cover is Pat DeLong's painting of Lost In The Fog! I have started two thread on the DB with ordering information; one in the Lost In The Fog folder and one in the Horse Racing folder.

NO Horse left behind or Ever Forgotten!

Hiya, FsOB! To Sofie's Lee, thanks for your posting this AM. I've been thinking of LITF because right now the Thames is a "white out" - I literally can't see the river on the other side of the street. Also, I received a thoughtful e-mail of thanks from Deanie Bartlett and the Aelo Family this weekend. How thoughtful of her at their time of bereavement! Here's to a productive day for us all. Peace, RMH

###Reading about the retrained TBs and the wonderful competition in UK: What a wonderful way to honor (and save!) our wonderful horses that, for whatever reason, do not belong on the track anymore.

Whether it is a lack of "fire in the belly" or injury or just badk luck, not all TBs bred for racing are going to succeed there. Whether it's the graded stakes runners or the $2500 claimers, every horse deserves a chance at a second career, even if it's as a friend to another horse or two in the pasture.

I had a lesson yesterday on my OTTB and after more years than I like to admit riding with the wrong person (a know-nothing who is taking money under false pretenses, imho), I am FINALLY getting the basics of dressage down more often than not--we have entire circles now that are correct (instead of just a stride or two at a time ;o). Huey has a wonderful work ethic and when he was "retired" from racing (ignominiously, I have a feeling), someone somewhere (destined for stars in his or her crown, I'm positive) saw that he had potential and he was sent to be reconditioned rather than rendered.

That person has my heartfelt thanks.

###Anyway, I am stoked after reading that great article. Alex, thanks for the link. Made my Monday ;oD

Please email the BLM about this. Here is a link to a Yahoo news story that is featured this morning - about the BLM proposal to kill the wild horses. At the bottom of the story is a link to the blm website - and on their website, there is a contact link and "tell us how we are doing" feedback link (bottom of home page). Please email them and tell them what you think about their plan to kill the wild horses.

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous, Belle, Key and the rest of the wonderful gang of Heavenly Equines.

For them:

MORNING POST/ShelleyA, Debra,WI/AAHS

STRATEGY FOR MONDAY JULY 7

Both the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), have the power to bring the bill up for consideration in their respective chambers, therefore it is vital that as many people as possible, both at the grassroots level and internally within Congress, insist that the House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader do everything in their power to afford the bills legislative due process and bring them immediately to the floor for a vote.

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) DC Phone: 202-225-4965 Fax:202-225-4188

Senate Majority Leader - Harry Reid (D-NV) DC Phone: 202-224-3542 Fax:202-224-7327

It is our understanding that more co sponsors would certainly facilitate our efforts with Speaker of the House Pelosi and draw the much needed attention to this legislation. For this reason, we will be posting the names of Representatives that we will be targeting.

Christopher Carney – PA Phone: 202-225-3731 Fax: 202-225-9594

Paul E. Kanjorski – PA Phone: 202-225-6511 Fax: 202-225-0764

Charles Dent – PA Phone: 202-225-6411 Fax: 202-226-0778

Tim Holden – PA Phone: 202-225-5546 Fax: 202-226-0996

J. Randy Forbes – VA Phone: 202-225-6365 Fax: 202-226-1170

Please continue to gather information from your calls and pass that information on to us via email through the DB.

Finally, please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter when making your calls and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

We are BARBARO’S VOICE……Let it be heard!!

POOR JOE, TOO HOT, TOO SMOKEY:
*************************************************
Monday, July 7th...
Up early, so early the roosters are annoyed. It seems every Monday I must work at another ranch, earning the big bucks. An extra cup of Peets, looking to find another gear. On our ranch we are incredibly crowded. Horses evacuated from fires are hoping to go home soon. Tom Hayes lives a mile away, down County Road 19. We buy our hay from Tom, and last night all alfalfa was gone. We are currently going through 36 bales a day. Tom left town for the holiday weekend. In the old ranch truck I go to his hay barn and load up. 18 bales for supper feeding. On the way home 5 bales fall off, and slide into a ditch next to the road. It was 175 degrees. Go to my ranch, unload the remaing 13 bales, drive back and reload the other 5. Passing motorists wave. Their nice, air conditioned cars no doubt with Rascal Flatts blasting from their cd players. Back at my house, and the 13 bales are once again put on the old truck. Three times in 240 degree heat I had to load that truck. Wondering if maybe this was the correct career choice...

Two race horses from Southern California and two race horses from Nothern California are waiting to come to us. No room at the Inn. Several horses evacuated from fires should go home this weekend. Others will stay with us while their owners rebuild. Sad times in California. Yucky smokey skies, with no end in sight. Later today might be 103 degrees. We slept with some windows open, and smoke filled our house. Strong coffee is from Peets, with just the right amount of praline cream. Whoopie pies came from Robin West, who lives back East. First time we have ever had a whoopie pie. So delicious I am hiding them from Pony Boy. Thank you Robin.

Pictures from the old Kodak program load quickly. Loading pictures from the newer Kodak program is like trying to get the ancient mare Elvira to lead. One long step at a time. All day to travel ten yards. Driving me crazy...

Here is the response that I received to the email I sent to the BLM.

Please use the contact information at the end of their response, to send comments to the BLM regarding their plan to kill the wild horses. Does the act to protect the wild horses and burros, that the lame Congress finally passed, say they are protected only if they are adoptable - otherwise the BLM has the "legal suthority" to kill them??? What the h...

Hello,

Thank you very much for your comments regarding the Bureau of Land
Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program.

The Bureau of Land Management is facing a number of difficult challenges in
the National Wild Horse and Burro Program. Our goal in the West is to
manage healthy, free-roaming herds on healthy rangelands; however, it is
becoming increasingly difficult to do so.

Wild horses and burros in the West have virtually no natural predators and
their herd sizes can double about every four years. As a result, the agency
must remove thousands of animals from Western public rangelands each year
to ensure that herd sizes are consistent with the land’s capacity to
support them. As of June 2008, there are more than 30,000 wild horses and
burros that are fed and cared for at short-term and long-term holding
facilities. It is essential to keep the BLM’s wild horse and burro program
in balance. Right now, the cost of keeping these animals in holding
facilities is spiraling out of control and preventing the agency from
successfully managing other parts of the program. For example, this fiscal
year, holding costs will exceed $26 million, more than three-fourths of the
BLM’s congressional appropriation of about $37 million for this program.

In addition, rising energy prices have increased costs. In one year alone,
energy costs for transportation and feed have increased almost $4 million.
It is clear the agency cannot continue current removal and holding
practices under existing and projected budgets. Neither can the BLM allow
horses to multiply unchecked on the range without causing an environmental
disaster. That's why the BLM is exploring options to exercise its legal
authority to (1) sell older and certain other unadopted animals “without
limitation” to any willing buyers and (2) euthanize those wild horses and
burros for which no adoption demand exists. We know this is not a popular
option, but we are at a critical point where we must consider using the
legal authorities allowed us.

The BLM welcomes your input as we work to improve the program and the
welfare of the West’s wild horses and burros within our budget. For every
comment to be officially recorded we ask you to leave feedback on this
program, please go to:

MY DEAREST FOBS: AND ALEX.

WE NEED TO STOP HORSE SLAUGHTER. I THINK WE NEED A DIFFERENT WAY TO DO THIS. THIS IS NOT WORKING.

Staying clean is not making it. Working hard is not making it. Playing by the rules is not making it. Once again I will say: we need big guns in the horse racing industry. We need them on Captiol Hill. John and Daryl cannot work any harder. Our state leaders cannot work any harder. We are losing them. We cannot work any harder. How many different ways can we say the same thing? We are not being heard.

Posted by: FG at July 7, 2008 5:51 PM

I agree Jonna.

We have a majority leader in the House who will not notice over 200 co-sponsors ! ! ! !

We have a speaker of the Senate who will not lift a finger with almost 1/3 of the Senate as co-sponsors.

There is tremendous money in horse slaughter, special interests are more than aware of that of course.

We need a different way, SOMETHING,

This is being controlled by special interests and our representatives , those who are not involved with the special interest, are not brave enough or capable enough , or SOMETHING enough , to stand up , for all the majority who are against slaughter.
So what does it take ???????
God help our horses, I am almost in despair at this point.

Good Morning Famblee

I feel the pain too. Our Congress has let us down big time. Nancy Pelosi PROMISED to get the job done and they have done nothing. They are paid to represent us and they don't. Their pocket are lined and they don't give a rat's ass about this country or what it's people want. They treat us like children and that they know what is best for us. The American public needs to vote these people out of office. I'M MAD AS HELL because I have had to chose between feeding Cloud and going to visit MHR. I can't afford both because of the price of gas, so Cloud is fed.

OK, sorry off my soapbox. On the DB there is a link to a CNN story on the Wild Horses. Please go and post comments. Here it is:

Daryl is alert and aware - we talk often - and you will be hearing some of his thoughts and commentary here later .....(right now - he is in the midst of a junior golf tournament - yup - even 5 year olds !!)
He will be at the Barbaro Celebration ... I will ... hundreds of you will, I know .......
jonna - joan - nancy - will you be there ?
With so many devoted FsOB in attendance, for many reasons (fundraising - etc) there will be an opportunity, perhaps, to brainstorm .......
regarding ..... what next. Our progress has been substantial since we began ........ and the calling has produced co-sponsors. It is now time to "turn it up a notch" ............... and regroup .......... redirect, perhaps ........
but ...... never, never to disappear. We've made a promise to our Beloved Barbaro ... to provide safety for his frenz ............
with our collective ideas and brains we can come up with new directions.

Daryl had an idea ... I thought it was great ... to invite our own senators and reps to the Celebration and let them SEE w/their own eyeballs how focused and devoted and professional and educated we are ........... let them FEEL the power and committment. Of course - it is unlikely they will come ... but, heck .... the invitation is a real good idea ...... and I will do that today ..... and will include our infamous Sheriff Joe.

One more thing. I know money is tight for everyone but we have to support the horses at the rescues. I told you last week that the price of hay has doubled for MHR in less than 2 years. We always have fun fundraisers where prizes are awarded. Please, if you can help out a bit.

Thanks

I imagine, if I know my politics and special interest groups, that the

cattle interests

are behind the BLM decisions.

The cattle interest in the west do NOT want horses competing with their cattle , which they graze on our public lands. That in my opinion is the big " disaster" coming to the lands referred to in their email.( Disaster or some similar word )

Its all a giant ball of political wax and they will move heaven and earth to keep us from protecting horses, wild or domestic companions, etc.

Of course it all boils down to greed, but also,
to control. These kind of men don't give up control willingly, ever in my experience.

I have no proof of any of this, it is all my opinion only, but it is an educated guess.

Who gave them this "authority" they so quickly quote ???
We are a representative republic, run by elected officials and laws and regs, so I don't know where the blame lies. But Pres. Bush was a cattleman ??
See the giant puzzle fit, piece by piece.
I've got to go, love you all, bye,

Hay guys, move over. I'm right there with you. We are committted (in more ways then one!) to this cause, and WE will not go away. The special interests groups and their lobbists know they are in a fight over this for once. We will get these bills passed. Not as soon as we would all would like, but it will happen. There are more and more people involved each year. Look at what we have added to the cause in the last year and a half. Unfortuneately, it takes a long time for bills to pass that change things that have been going on for a long time without a lot of challenge. It is a whole lot easier to block legislation than it is to get it passed. BUT it will happen. For once the people will win as long as we do not give up.

Plan to kill wild horses runs into troubleStory Highlights

RENO, Nevada (AP) -- Animal rights activists and ranchers are clashing over a federal proposal to euthanize wild horses as a way to deal with their surplus numbers.

Horse advocates will mount a campaign against the proposal announced late last month by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, said Chris Heyde, deputy director of government and legal affairs for the Animal Welfare Institute based in Washington, D.C.

Federal officials said they're faced with tough choices because wild horses have overpopulated public lands in the West and they no longer can afford to care for the number of animals that have been rounded up.

But Heyde maintained the agency is seeking a "magic bullet" for budget problems caused after it began rounding up the mustangs at an unprecedented rate in recent years.

He said the roundups left too many horses for the public to adopt, requiring the agency to contract for more private long-term holding facilities.

The proposal "is killing pure and simple to balance the books for an agency whose reckless management has caused immeasurable harm to a national treasure at considerable cost to the American taxpayer," Heyde said.

Ron Cerri, of the Rebel Creek Ranch in Orovada and president-elect of the Nevada Cattlemen's Association, said ranchers would prefer horses be adopted but euthanasia may be necessary to keep their numbers down.

"Unfortunately, it's something they'll have to consider," Cerri said. "I don't know of another solution."

Cerri criticized the federal agency's proposal to stop roundups of wild horses to save money. Ranchers view mustangs as competition for forage on the range.

"That would be really unfortunate," he said. "We're starting to get close to what's called `appropriate management levels' of wild horses on the range. If we stop the roundups, that number will blow up again."

There are an estimated 33,000 wild horses in 10 Western states. About half of those are in Nevada.

The agency has set a target appropriate management level of horses at 27,000. About another 30,000 horses are in holding facilities, where most are made available for adoption.

Last year about $22 million of the entire horse program's $39 million budget was spent on holding horses in agency pens. Next year the costs are projected to grow to $26 million with an overall budget that is being trimmed to $37 million.

Lacy Dalton, president and co-founder of the Let 'Em Run Foundation horse advocacy group, urged the agency to consider alternative solutions.

They include efforts to step up birth control and legislation to provide tax breaks to large landowners willing to let horses roam on their property, she said.

"The American people have spoken -- they want to preserve these wild horses," said Dalton.

"They are symbolic of the wildness and freedom and independent spirit of the West. We need to find ways to save them without being a burden on taxpayers," she added.

Agency officials said they stepped up the roundups in recent years because of ongoing drought that has left dwindling forage and water for the mustangs. Horse advocates insist the action was taken to placate ranchers.

The Bureau of Land Management's announcement marked the first time the agency publicly has discussed the possibility of putting surplus animals to death. Congress unanimously passed the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act to protect the animals.

Here's my contribution to our ongoing campaign - info on our ABR Targets. [btw I can't access the HAHS list so that may or may not be forthcoming here today. Anyone who can, may want to go to HAHS Yahoo Group site to get today's list of Afro-Amer Reps to target with the AWI/NBFA material.]

HS History of Reps on today's (Mon 7/07) ABR Target List

All voted YES on 249 in the 110th Congress; Carney is new to the 110th Congress so has no history with former 503 in the 109th. Only Dent cosponsored 503 in the 109th. Their votes on
503 in the 109th are shown below.

Christopher Carney PA
Phone: 202-225-3731 Fax: 202-225-9594
(new to the 110th so no history w/503)

Paul E. Kanjorski PA
Phone: 202-225-6511 Fax: 202-225-0764 (Y on 503)

Charles Dent PA
Phone: 202-225-6411 Fax: 202-226-0778
(cs & Y on 503)

Tim Holden PA
Phone: 202-225-5546 Fax: 202-226-0996 (N on 503)

Tim Murphy PA
Phone: 202-225-2301 Fax: 202-225-1844 (N on 503)

J. Randy Forbes VA
Phone: 202-225-6365 Fax: 202-226-1170 (Y on 503)

IMO - THANK them all for having voted YES on HR 249 - but remind them that 249 only applies to WILD equines and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to end export.

Thank those who voted YES on HR 503; use their prior support of the slaughter ban bill when urging them to cosponsor now. "DO THE RIGHT THING AGAIN - support the slaughter/export ban - but this time, cosponsor...."

Thank the former cosponsors - but tell 'em: "WHY NOT NOW?!?!?!" "DO THE RIGHT THING AGAIN!"

As for anyone who voted NO on 503 in the 109th - "changed circumstances call for a fresh look with an open mind" - and the closure of all the slaughter plants within the US is a huge changed circumstance, so that even though they may have opposed 503 in the past, they should support it now because of the export situation.

Hi Gang. I might need to clarify something.

There are 2 Margies posting here. Myself. And Margie $1-$5 Drive. I believe she is Margie17 on the DB?

Go Jonna. My curling iron is set on high, in case it is needed.

I am a regular visitor to your site and fully support your efforts to stop horse slaughter even though I live in the UK. Sadly the politicians have let you down and they always will unless they perceive that they have something to gain i.e. being re-elected! I believe that you could telephone, fax their offices for the next 100 years and not succeed. What you may need to do is alter your tactics to something more hard hitting like showing a series of adverts on prime time TV that illustrate horses being brutally killed. It seems extreme but the public need to see for themselves. Then say how politicians have persistently ignored your pleas for help in changing the law. Mention Mexico and Canada - they get many tourists from the US so maybe you need to ask people to consider where they vacation. Name the politicians who have failed to respond; recognise those who promised to help but say you are still awaiting the results of their efforts. Where do you get the money to fund an advert - maybe a lot of small contributions from thousands of Barbaro fans; maybe a benefactor. You have to change strategy as you cannot rely on politicians! We now from UK experience how they fail you!

I have an idea

quit thinking "we" can't do this anymore. "we" can. We are. quit thinking "this is too much". Stop ignoring the successes and dwelling on the battles. Just keep fighting and never EVER give up.

At the last auction in Ft Collins on June 25th, all but one horse, who was euthanized due to a painful, unrepairable injury, were saved. ALL BUT ONE. That is huge. I know where three of them are at this moment including an older grey gelding who has a purple halter and still has glitter on his feet. The others were sold to private buyers or resold to private buyers. HUGE.

I think there is a direct correlation between the numbers of posts on this board and the focus on defeatistism. We can't regain momentum by constantly focusing on the uphill battles, by saying things like "we can't do this anymore" because we can. We are.

Here's a very real condition in Congress. There are bills on the war, on education, health insurance, financial assistance for farmers and others affected by weather-related disasters, job losses (where do I sign up??) many, many more. So WHAT if the Congress prioritizes these bills over the ones we are campaigning for. Why should that stop us? Why should that impede our progress in rescuing horses, in educating people, aligning with organizations like NHRA, the Jockey Club, AQHA, AAPA, any organization that we know would be impacted by regulations in breeding and most importantly, by supporting the rescues we already have? Over 2000!!! Over $1,000,000 raised. You don't think that's more important that grinding the congressional reps and senators over and over when they're more focused on "their" priorities? Tell that to the horses.

If you think what we've done and what we continue to do doesn't matter, you're dead wrong. Just change the angle of attack if you aren't feeling that you're making a difference. Keep calling and faxing and writing, and let our front people hammer out new strategies IF they believe new strategies are needed. Meanwhile, keep your eyes on the prizes. They're all over the rescue boards, and there are many, many more for the taking. Help to remove horses from the pipelines either by orchestrated efforts to remove them from auctions or helping to educate people how to avoid the auctions. Haven't you considered that will be just as effective, maybe even more than getting bills passed.

That's my take.

Subject: July 7 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Trumpet vines have grown so tall along the woodland path that a tall person must bend to walk beneath them. The path is not paved, not a place easy to walk. Step high over cushions of moss and protect the soles from huge acorns. Fallen sticks and uneven ground can hamper the stride--but oh, it is beautiful.

There are dark shadows even on a sunny day. Shafts of light shoot through holes in the canopy and the tangle of grapevines and woodbine dominate space. Here, the spirit is free to be whatever age, whatever time, whatever purpose chosen for the moment. It is a time machine, a heavenly carriage, a very private sanctuary. It is a mind and spirit set free from compression and depression--a safe house from the world.

My friends, if you took me away from this land it would be very hard for me.

reposting to maximize exposure

july fifth, 2008 for the fans of Barbaro

sometimes in the backdrop of war raging somewhere else
we see stunning bravery
and selflessness
. this holiday brings the SONG
IS ANY ONE THERE
DOES ANYNE CARE ??
TO MIND FROM 1776

EXQUISITE HANDWRITING ON FRESHY MDE ARHCMENT PAER
SHE WORTES FORM HER HEART
TO HIM
HIS WIFE
,JOHN STRECHED HIS PEN AND QUILL
DEEP BLUE BLACK INK
DOTTED PERFECTLY AND SPILLING INTO PAGES
A RIDER WILL FOLD UP HIS LETTER INTO A SCROLL
AND CARRY HIS LOVE TO HER
MILES INTO THE COUNTRYSIDE TO THEIR FARM

HIS HEART BECKONS FOR HELP
FROM HER
BY CANDLELIGHT
THE TREMORS OF NEW SELF RULE AND IRRITABLE EGOS AND VANITIES
BUT BOTTOM LINE
ALL HAD A PASSION TO CREAT A FRAME WORK FOR THER NEW FOUND AND HARD FOUGHT LIBERTY ..

you can also make a delicate butter reduction the chefs
call it
where you burn off the juice, oils, and get down to the richness of texture and flavor
but it takes effort
and one's whole wits..
a fire
but hey that is the american way
god bless it
-------------------------------------------

the power of .four hooves
pounding on the dirt
flying without wings
the night winds and sumer rain
carry the gift
of
that day
the sheen of his dark brown coat
him
flying to the finnish line
the small peruvian jockey melted into his mane and neck ears upright
barbaro
.his gaze piercing yet wise beyond his years

on the day the jacksons and the NBC staff encircled the stall
they agreed to let him go
reluctant as barbaro was to ''giving up''
he had finally bowed to intense weakness and pain
his confusion
.trying to find the path his footing on no legs left
the direction
in the pain of it all
so unfamiliar to him
and his former magnificent apollo body
gone
he floated past
rapidly gone..in a flash
gone in a second

i have not forgotten---searing brave beauty of a woman.
soaked with tears her voice trembling but firm
she faced the myriad of cameras world wide
never flinching from the high road
listening to her horse
the horse comes first

she hoped each one who loved Barbaro would find a way to carry his bold and other worldly genius to fruition

'she never asked
or demanded
anyone to join them in their deep love of this creature
but thanked everyone profusely
humbly grateful that others felt as she and roy did about barbaro
infact incredulous --

here and suddenly so gone in a split second
all lost the color vanished empty hole
gone out of the day
but the searing lessons he would leave behind and on our doorsteps
are still waiting to be claimed
now almost three years later,
i know how i struggle to tackle
bottom line
the nonsense in congress
the games
the washington way
transient city of easy come easy go
they play
lives fortunes gained on our backs
on the cruel painful tortuous deaths of thousands of horses
..for what
look what doors he opened for years no one would touch these stories
and now
is our opening ..and the bottom line
is upon us
here
.go to the source
follow the money
here it is
lets go
now i am getting to the heart of the darkness
hidden for years away.
.horses dying in vain in silence
now we are poised
to act to plan..
..
..what disturbs the money trail
' arrogance of my culture
that treats these great mythic creatures of all sizes and shapes and breeding
as products
objects to gain financial security of sorts
and the disposable culture locks horns with the deep rooted corruption
of many who simply view horses as a product ..like a machine a car
the perversions of it all this beautiful sport turned.....

horse and their herds
are about partnership.
their palette of communicative skills
their physical powers
can assist us to reach our own mythic life

there is no doubt
as roy jackson said two weeks ago [ boodhorse]
, the few owners present for hours at the hearings in wash dc
he said
we are tired of talking heads..we want action.

we need one of those lobbiest that works for the beef industry or the tobacco industry a real grown up arm twisting lobby-ist

part of my path is about recognizing what is working
and dropping what is not working

. i am looking fORWARD TO FINDING
BY ENGAGING WITH THOSE LEGISLATORS
SO OUT OF TOUCH
THESE BRDGES
IS THAT A POINT???
AND THAT IS WHY
FOR ME
BARBARO CAME TO REVEAL THAT DOOR AND THAT WINDOW.
.THAT IS CALLED PERSISTENCE
HEART
HARD STEADY ON OUT WORK
DEALING WITH THE VERY REPRESENTATIVES YOU VOTED IN
\
THERE ARE MANY WHO HAVE WORKED YEARS TO END THIS SLAUGHTER UNKNOWN TO US-
TRY 40 YEARS \FOR A START
NOW IS THE TIME FOR US TO USE ALL OUR OWN ABILITIES
CONTINUE
TOSS OUT WHAT DOESNT WORK
IN A CRISIS
IT IS THE QUESTIONS WE RAISE
THAT WILL GIVE US THE PATH

AND COMBINE OUR EFFORTS SOMEHOW.
THERE ARE MANY INCLUDING THE JACKSONS
WHO WORK TIRELESSLY TO BE THE BEST HORSE OWNERS IN TEH BUSINESS ..ALL LIFE CONSUMING-NO TAK TEY ARE ALL ACITON
LOOK A THEIR RECORD
BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE VERY CROWD THAT PERPETUATES SOME OF THESE ILLS
THERE ARE TRAINERS WHO DO NOT TELL THE TRUTH
..AND ARE JUST AS OFFENSIVE AS THE TRAINER THE PRESS AND MANY
ALBEIT WITH SOME GOOD REASON -
HAS SOUGHT TO VILIFY -BEYOND

it appears to me
how to make those folks want to save their livelihood
in a more nobler way
.me being the change i want
it worked for gandhi
should work for me
a thought
to visualize what i want .
i pray for peace and strength
resolve
..to keep on
find new ways to be heard
as if this is one of those invisible lessons in itself
another gift from barbaro

there is a mystery and an anthropology
to this cloth
and as i look at barbaro;s portraits
i see the power
integrity of an invincible old soul
can i meet him
can i match him
just even one tiny corner?
give him voice
his voice so royal so clear and so redemptive.

I've been away from the boards for a while. I come back to check in, and to post when stuff like the BLM, and what could happen with Cloud or Jenny come to me through email. I know where to come - where like-minded souls understand and hear the spirit of the horse, and all animals.

Maybe because I have been away, I shouldn't say anything now - I haven't been in the trenches every day for a while. Somehow living that every day gives you more of a right to speak out - at least that is what I think. But in spite of thinking that, I want to share a story with you. I hope it is helpful.

I saw a therapist when my mother died. She told me to cry - to work myself into a lather. To think of everything and anything that would make me cry..... Then, after 30 minutes - to stop. To wash my face, go for a walk - but to stop. Not to deny the pain and the sadness - but to give into it for a while, and then to go on. To do that each day, more if I needed - but to stop after 30 minutes. It seemed to help - after a while. I think it let my body know I could let it out - and also, that I could stop (although that part was hard at first). I didn't seem to feel as out of control.

I don't think it would be good to deny what we are feeling right now - but feeling it doesn't mean we will ever give up..... Never, ever, ever. No Fear - remember the one that brought us here. No Fear.

May God help all of us to help our horses - in whatever way we choose to do that. Give us peace Lord, and a lightness to our being - our hearts are heavy. Let us see the ray of hope and sunshine that is there for us every day. Thank you God, for the gift of Barbaro.

Love, Light and Protection for All of Our Horses

EXTRA MONDAY July 7 NBFA SPECIAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List NOW posted below and at this DB Thread:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=26126.1

NOTE - these are AFRO-AMERICAN LEGISLATORS and we want to send them the AWI/NBFA Press Release dated 6/17/08, link at the above DB Thread; also at DB msg 25386.1

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their 2008 WHITE PAPER are at the DB thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that all three former horse slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently; and Cavel (Dekalb IL) lost its appeal and the US Sup Ct just refused further review. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Monday 7/07/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

extra Mon 7/07 NBFA SPECIAL TARGET LIST (HAHS) -

All are African American Congressmen - HS History - All voted YES on HR 503 in the 109th Congress; Clyburn did not vote on HR 249 in the 110th and the other two voted YES; and none cosponsored HR 503 last time. Their respective votes are shown below. (Y = Yes; NV = Not Voting)

IMO - THANK those who voted YES on HR 249 - but remind them that 249 only applies to WILD equines and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to end export.

Thank them all for having voted YES on HR 503; use their prior support of the slaughter ban bill when urging them to cosponsor now. "DO THE RIGHT THING AGAIN - support the slaughter/export ban - but this time, cosponsor...."

OHIO
Rep. Stephanie T. Jones (Y on 249; Y on 503)
Fax: 202-225-1339 Phone: 202-225-7032
1009 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515-3511

SOUTH CAROLINA
Rep. James E. Clyburn (NV on 249; Y on 503)
Fax: 202-225-2313 Phone: 202-225-3315
2135 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515-4006

NOTE from CJ - because of Rep. Clyburn's House Leadership role (House Majority Whip), his public position is that for that reason he will not cosponsor; IMO - acknowledge this to the aide you talk to, but ask them to convey to Rep. Clyburn your hopes that the Rep will do everything within his power to get HR 503 to a vote in the House; remind there are presently 205 House cosponsors.

ALABAMA
Rep. Artur Davis (Y on 249; Y on 503)
Fax: 202-226-9567 Phone: 202-225-2665
208 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515-0107

IF you're done with today's ABR/AAHS Instructions & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to post 3 of the DB Thread noted above, for a good alternate target list of Senators compiled by AWI/SAPL.

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! Go get 'em.

We'll keep on working. Keep going. But I do believe something more is needed. And I'll await anxiously for further intructions. We are having an impact, but it is not big enough.

The other night on the ABC News, they did a piece on how much unfinished business there was in Congress before the recent break. And they stated not to expect anything else to be done before February or March 2009 due to it being an election year.

Posted by: Margie at July 7, 2008 8:58 PM

Cheryl:
Check your records. Anyone: check your records: I am behind the rescues 101%. I help with what little money I have. With "cheerleading." Exhortation.

I have bought hay. Halters. Meds.
AND I CALL. Everyday when and where I am supposed to. I blitz. But, one is not the same as the other.

IMHO, the rescues are all about the HEART. The Congress is all about the DEAL. I am NOT giving up. Never said I was. (When the day arises that I cannot admit despair, frustration, etc on this Board, I am gone.) But that day hasn't come as yet.

I AM SAYING: We have to find a better way to do this. Listen to what Joe Shelton says: Sometimes, you have to dance with the Devil. We need to look at the methods of the opposition. And I am afraid that many of those methods involve putting the money on the table.

We have some lovely, regal, tough, highly principled folks on our side. But the time is coming when they will need to do more than be noble. Their supportiveness, if it is there, has to be made public. Any one of the freat horse dsynasties in this country--or a consortium of them--could afford a LOBBYIST. And I see no conflict of interests here. God forbid there was.

We need to be seen coming. We need to shake the roots of these evil horse slaughter trees. Show them that we have the backing. That we can go toe to toe with them.

And I'll be very interested in hearing what Daryl has to say. We're the foot soldiers. We need to know what is going on.

If not us, then who?

from yesterday, not sure if anyone posted . . .

July 6 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

He was the storyteller relating tribal feats and conflicts with brave men and women overcoming every foe, climbing the highest mountains and swimming the swiftest streams. Some of the listeners were very young and aware of technological advances they were being taught in school. One asked respectfully but knowingly, "Grandfather, tell us about computers."

"I am a computer," the old man answered. "My body is a place of business where the work of circulation goes on all the time. The brain is in charge of all the workings with more storage than a clock size building. It directs the entire business--but it is nothing if it is not connected to the Mainframe. If it has nothing but worldly knowledge, it is not better than a mere being. Connected to the Mainframe, it is unlimited."

I am but one man. I am the voice of my people. Whatever their hearts are, that I talk.

joan,
jonna has always lead me to belive we can only have orange I tried for teal or purple. LOL

Daryl is a good man we are lucky to have him and his soldiers.

Congress needs to be made aware that there are other needs for horses, TB's make wonderful therapy horses, riding schools need horses, it goes on and on. If I had a horse I could not take care of I would offer them to a therapy program.Children and horses especially the less fortunate need to have some kind of importance in their lives. I know they are ideas but...programs where innercity kids can come and take care of the horse, the list is endless.

Yes we are the people and WE GET IT!

THANK YOU GOD: A WONDERFUL STORY OF ONE OF JOE'S FIRE REFUGEES....DON'T YOU JUST LOVE IT. i WANT TO PUT MY ARMS AROUND THAT LITTLE MARE'S NECK AND JUST HANG ON....
************************************************

There is a mare here who lives far away, and she will stay with us until her owner removes burned fence posts. We know the chore well. Digging away in cement to bust loose the entire post, and then a new fence post goes in. Anyway, what was my point? Oh yeah, the mare is so cute. Every time a person approachs she holds her right front leg in the air and squeals. Like an excited puppy. And then the mare follows you all over, squealing and begging for attention. She is a thoroughbred, with personality all the way to the moon. The owner misses her like crazy, and this weekend new fencing should be completed. The happy little mare will go home, saying enough of this dust and smoke and flies. And all of those grouchy race horses. What an attitude they have...

Time to feed this ranch and then go feed another. Enjoy your ridiculously hot and smokey Monday, and be sure to hug your horses. A special hello to Sue, and Thank You so much for the coffee. We could smell it before the package was opened. Takes away from that kitty litter, dog hair, and smoke smells we have grown fond of. Thank you for thinking of us Sue.

Barb AZ:
Doesn't Sheriff Joe in Maricopa Co. make all the inmates wear hot pink?

A quick Google does reveal, ladies, that some places use diff colors for diff age groups, degrees of heinous deeds...like dogpoop brown for murderers. Nice.

Time to feed the pack and then Stargate Atlantis is on: sigh. All will be well. If only Boxer would quit keening and wailing as if he has not eaten in a month.....oy.

joan roya, you are right about Nancy Pelosi. She is too busy designing her plush new jet to fool with us. The one that was in use was just too small for all her friends. The new one will be paid for by all we taxpayers. Congress has an 11% approval rating. well, shock.

well, finally took car to the shop as the a/c wont work. I wasnt going to fix it until (DUH) it occured to me that if it was the blower wouldnt have any heat this winter. It was the blower so there went $250.00 on the old visa card. Came home and was thinking how I could cut down on stuff had it all figured out for this month. As I was doing it I had a crown fall out of my tooth. well, enough whining about that stuff. ######jonna, if we start putting in a little money each month now maybe we would have enough for part time lobbyists next year. But so many rescues need help now. Like yole I am mad and frustrated about our politicans who seem not to give a rats ass about what we the people want. well, this is my rant for the day.

There is a MIRACLE indeed at MHR - two big mamas and two big babies all in the round pen together...a sight for sore eyes!

Matt, is right. This is an election year, lets use it to our advantage.

### I hope all Curlin's legal licensing problems will be eliminated so he can race at Belmont. I am sure it will give attendance a real boost if he's there.

A mistrial was declared last week on his 20% owners in their trial. The jury was deadlocked,a mistrial was given. Now they have to go through the whole trial with new jury...those guys are going to be in jail a long time..waiting for the trial. The third lawyer in the case was acquitted , so now it's just Curlin's two owners.
I wish Jess Jackson owned all of Curlin..

I hope Curlin runs safely and wins Saturday and then on to France where I hope he wins there!!

GO CURLIN!!!!!

STRATEGY FOR TUESDAY, JULY 8

Hiya, FsOB! I've had an exhausting day at work today and feel buried alive under incessant new requests for assistance on top of some important unfinished "deliverables" there. But I must admit to feeling inspired by reading today's posts here....

Has anyone seen any of the recent articles in the press about Sheryl Crow and the horse that she has adopted? I saw some in The Hartford Courant and The New London Day over the long weekend, very nicely done.

Wishing us all "ACN". I need an early evening, it's only Monday. Peace, RMH

#### A happy birthday to our Angel Dee's 11-yr. old doggie Amie! Rainbows to Dee & Amie!
To Martita: I have been missing your words. Thank you for your poem today, Martita!
To Gloria in IL: An awesome and timely quote that you shared.
To Sandra: To use a TX term "dang it", I am so sorry that your filling or crown fell out. I hope that Chief did OK during the fireworks over the 4th. Groton's fireworks will be this Saturday and Kita will be stressed, I am sure. ####

I hope some of you were able to watch the program on the Documentary Channel...if not, copies are available from documentarychannel.com/store

I have never seen such exquisite beauty combined with scenes of abject horror, and once again I am horrified, disgusted and ashamed of our disfunctional government which was instituted "of the people, by the people and for the people..."

After watching this 30-minute program, I began to understand (perhaps for the first time) why people of extraordinary courage and conviction become ANARCHISTS! Flame me if you will because I know that is an extreme word, but this program has brought out the best, or worst, in me...depending upon your opinion!

I don't get that channel.

Dear Gang, please see my new name. I used to sign with just Margie, but I think there are 3 of us posting. I am not the Margie doing the fund raising.

Don't Congressmen listen to Beltway, (Washington), call girls? Maybe we could hire one. I believe that is what others do, yes? And lavish vacations as well.

EQUINE HEAVEN, please welcome Rosie, beloved Boxer of Verna and her family in OH. Dear Rosie was only 4 years old, and succumbed to cancer.

Rest in peace, BEAUTIFUL ROSIE-GIRL, and may light perpetual shine upon you. I am sorry that your life was so short, but oh how you were loved...and you carry the love of your family with you into eternity.

Hey Famblee:

I just thought you may be interested in viewing this website.

http://onegirloneride.com/

Cut me some slack, I've never been schooled in that blue link thingy...

I view it as a feel good story and I try to remember when I was her age and not afraid to dream big. Perhaps us grown ups should remember what it was like to be a child. How great could the world be, if she is really our future and our legacy?

A young girl who loves horses and loves America. It doesn't really get much better than this.

If you have a few extra $'s maybe you would like to donate to this effort.

Barbaro is fifth on the candle site. I have the hardest time understanding this. I know it is not easy - you have to delete cookies and files for them to allow all of his candles to count - this is because at one time we crashed their site... so be it - he still deserves the candles and the effort.

I realize the candles are only a symbol -but they are a symbol of rememberance..... there were thousands here that love him - he has changed so many lives.

If you believe in lighting candles to show our rememberance of Barbaro - please light a candle for him. In my opinion - for all that he has done - for all that he has changed in so many lives - he belongs in first always.....
