Barbaro Updates: 624

updates are now here.

Update 3708: An easy win this afternoon for J Be K, who is clearly the best 3yo sprinter in North America at this stage: Another Dominating Win For J Be K.

Ellis Park may yet open: Ellis Park might have racing season after all. (found at Paulick Report)

Update 3707: We have now eclipsed 750,000 messages on the Discussion Board. What an extraordinary community! To date you have raised more than $900,000 to save more than save 2,300 horses from slaughter. You have also done so much more, and together we continue to learn, stay focused and grow.

To celebrate this milestone we are looking to the future, and we have created a page for Nicanor.

Also, next weekend there will be a celebration at Delaware Park: 2008 Celebration of Barbaro Weekend.

Update 3706: A pleasant morning's work this morning at Woodbine. We had eight sets and needed to be finished before the track closed at 8 am so another early start (5 am) and finish. All my horses went nicely for an easy morning.

I had a conversation with Danny, our jockey's (Jim McAleney's) agent about trying to find a home for a friend of his' horse who can no longer run. His friend claimed the horse in Florida, but unfortunately the horse was subsequently bitten by a spider and essentially the horse can no longer do anything other than be a companion horse. Apparently he's a very nice horse and was a good runner. Anyway, I thought it was cool I was asked about this. Further evidence that people here care and that people know a little about what I am up to.

Update 3705: Happy July 4!

A very interesting and detailed look at the law behind the Asmussen and Dutrow drug cases: The Blame Game.

Update 3704: An update yesterday from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

What a beautiful Wednesday. Going to be quiet on the racing front for this week but the two year olds are progressing very well. Saar Treaty should be back in the entries in a couple of weeks after a short break. King Congaree and Sweet Ginger Brown are both breezing well and are now up to a half mile piece of work. Both of these seem happy with everything so far.

Triumphant is a slower maturing colt who is still doing eighths. He is the first horse you see as you enter the barn and he loves his new stall. He gets in on all of the action. So far he is not studdish and hopefully he will stay that way. Rossetta (Tim's baby formerly know as Rosie but we already have a Rosie) is progressing nicely under Robbie and she responds well to his patience and quiet demeanor. They get along great and she has been jogging nicely around the barn. Lilly (Who's Happy little sister) is just galloping and doing early gate work. She is a lot like her sister and is very laid back. Veiled Reference is enjoying being back at Fair Hill. She has rounded out a bit and looks great. Miss VIP (Grand Slam filly) has been going to the gate with Lilly. She has a lot more experience at the gate than Lilly and is a good influence. Rose Campbell is eating like a horse so to speak and seems to be happy as a clam.

Little Binkley (barn cat) is none too happy with Tim at the moment. He needs to get wormer everyday and lets just say he doesn't take it like a woman. He'll be a better man for it when he's finished. Anyway, that's all for now. I'll try to keep you informed about any new happenings in a few days.

Update 3703: Ellis Park, which was due to open July 4, is no longer opening. There are currently 400 horses on the grounds: Ellis Park to Close; ADW Dispute Cited.

Update 3702: A quiet morning on the track this morning at Woodbine, with only five horses to ride. Again the track was closing early (8 am) so we were finished early. All my horses galloped easily. As I was washing the shammies after we had finished I saw a horse come flying out of the tunnel, without its rider. The horse was subsequently caught and looked fine. Lets hope the rider was also fine.

The buzz on the track was all Brett Favre. I missed it all yesterday (it is Wimbledon afterall) but apparently there was a rumor he may come back!

Update 3701: Feedback from Congressman Whitfield: Whitfield anticipates further federal action on horse racing, excerpt:

"It is clear that the 38 different state racing commissions, as well as the numerous other interest groups, are not in a position to protect this industry," Whitfield said through his press secretary. "Following last month's hearing, it has become apparent that Congress will no longer allow the status quo."

Whitfield found some of the testimony to be "riveting," and noted that it will take some time for Congress to determine its next move. He said in the coming weeks and months, he looks forward to meeting with more industry leaders.

Please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! Wow, it is July 3rd already! It's already a bright morning here of the banks of the Thames. Wish you could see out the bay windows on our first floor!

Thank goodness for the leadership of Kentucky's Congressman Whitfield. It is pivotal that our horses have friends in both political corrals, er, I mean parties. Perhaps he can galvanize the House to take some action.

Wishing each of you a safe Thursday! Can I be first or second today? Let's see....

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyKey and the rest of the charming and glorious gang in Equine Heaven.

On their behalf:

MORNING POST/ShelleyA, Debra,WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF JUNE 30TH

We have been informed that the only way to get this legislation passed, is by putting pressure on leadership to get it to the floor for a vote. To expedite this effort, this week we will be asking you to focus on the House. We have been advised the best way to get this done is for you to fax the following letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi WITH A CC TO STENY HOYER AND YOUR OWN REPRESENTATIVE

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi Fax 202-225-4188

House Majority Leader- Steny Hoyer Fax 202-225-4300

Dear Madam Speaker:

I am writing to implore you to afford Bill HR503 legislative due process by bringing it to the floor for consideration. It is urgent that we have our chance to get this legislation to a vote in order to save our American horses from the horrors of slaughter for human consumption and from the transportation of our horses to slaughter for human consumption.

It is my understanding that you have the ability to get HR503 released from committee. Please give our horses a chance by getting the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (Bill HR503) on the calendar.

Sincerely,

(your name and address)

cc: House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer

cc: (your own representative)'

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE…..Let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do.

###One more day at the office (well, actually, the boss doesn't come back from her vacation until Tuesday, so there are TWO days to go ;o) and things are moving right along.

I seem to have a handle on things (at least, so far). I write articles (advertorials, actually) and take pictures, then design and lay out the pages. The computer program is the umpteenth generation of the old PageMaker program, but I have some "technical issues"--my computer at work is really being asked to do more than it is capable of. the chances of my getting a new computer (or a NEWER one) are between None and Noner. I don't even have a decent CHAIR ;o)

Anyway, I also have a riding lesson this weekend (temps will cool off to a mere 100 degrees, thank goodness). Today promises to be another 103 degrees.

###Safe Fourth of July to all, Happy Birthday USA. There are a lot of problems with what's going on in our land right now, but I still love my country. It's because of the freedoms we have, thanks to those who have fought to protect us, that we can express our displeasures and work together for the greater good.

Just doesn't get any better than that.

Repost from last night

Hello FOB

Sorry if this is a duplication, and also that it is so long. I just received an email from In Defense of Animals. The text from the email is below - it is regarding Jenny.

Also, I spoke with Dallas Parks and Recreation today (the Dallas Zoo reports to Parks and Recreation). They are taking a "poll" of callers regarding thoughts on the Mexico amusement park or the sanctuary for Jenny. Please call (214) 670-4100 and tell them what you want for Jenny.

From the email: This is an In Defense of Animals Action Alert

Tell Dallas Zoo: Send Surviving Elephant
to a U.S Sanctuary, Not Mexico

When 39-year-old Keke the elephant died prematurely at the Dallas Zoo in May 2008, IDA urged the zoo to send their surviving elephant Jenny to a sanctuary so that she could have the chance at a better life. Yet this week, zoo officials announced their troubling decision to send Jenny to the Africam Safari Park in Puebla, Mexico, where the 31-year-old African elephant would lose the protection of U.S. law. More baffling is the apparent fact that the Mexican park currently houses three Asian elephants, a distinct species from Jenny, an African elephant.

Association of Zoo and Aquarium standards advise against housing the two species together.

"We're shocked and appalled that the Dallas Zoo is moving Jenny out of the country to a facility where she will not be protected by U.S. animal welfare law and will not be able to socialize with others of her kind," said IDA elephant expert Catherine Doyle. "The U.S. Department of Agriculture-certified Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is ready to accept Jenny and house her with other African elephants. There is simply no reason to send her out of the country when a world-class facility so nearby has offered to take her."

At the 2700-acre Elephant Sanctuary, Jenny would share a spacious, 300-acre natural habitat with three other African elephants. By contrast, the Mexican park offers an unnatural, confining exhibit only a small fraction of the size available at the Sanctuary. "Elephant experts agree that ample space is essential to the well-being of captive elephants," said Doyle. "We are dumbfounded that the zoo would choose a distant facility in a foreign country when she could be sent to a nearby facility where she could roam hundreds of acres."

Jenny has had a traumatic and troubled stay at the Dallas Zoo. Between 1996 and 2001 she was medicated with the tranquilizer Acepromazine because of aggression and self-mutilating behaviors. Federal regulators characterized Jenny's long-term treatment with this psychotropic drug as "highly unconventional." While African elephants in the wild are known to reproduce into their 50s and live into their 60s, they commonly die decades before their natural time in zoos.

The Dallas Zoo's decision is literally a matter of life and death for this long-suffering elephant.

IDA is calling on the Dallas City Council to reverse the move, which is planned for Fall. "The City Council soon goes on recess, and the most important thing they could do before then is to stand with Dallas citizens who demand that Jenny remain under the protection of U.S. laws at a facility that she will share with other members of her species," said Doyle. "We now have less than one week to convince the city to reverse the zoo's disastrous decision."

Please Take Action to urge Dallas City Council to override the zoo's decision to send Jenny to the Africam Safari Park and instead transfer her to The Elephant Sanctuary.

Clicked on the links about Curlin that Alex posted up top on yesterday's updates and was fascinated by this little tidbit:

The colt was named for Charles Curlin, an African-American slave from western Kentucky who fought for the Union Army with the United States Colored Troops in the American Civil War. One of his original owners, through his interest in Midnight Cry Stables, is Charles Curlin's great, great grandson.

July 3 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Innocence is ours in so many ways. Even the one that has no conscience, nothing good to measure life by--this person is innocent. Maybe not of wrongdoing, but innocent of knowing God exists and knowing him intimately.

Can this be called innocence? Most would call it ignorance---and there's some mixed in. They know nothing of gentleness or kindness, but they recognize ruthlessness and the delight of being lawless. These innocent consider themselves sophisticated and beyond the ways of love. So very sad---because God is love.

Let us form one body, one heart, and defend to the last warrior our country, our homes, our liberty, and the graves of our fathers.

Bloodhorse (Ellis Park Closed)
###############################
The owner of Ellis Park in western Kentucky said he will close the facility, where the summer race meet was to begin on Friday, citing a court ruling in a dispute with horsemen.

Ellis Park owner Ron Geary said he has no plans to reopen Ellis, which was built in 1922, as a racetrack.

Geary told The Courier-Journal in Louisville that he decided to close the track after a federal judge turned down his request for an injunction against Kentucky horsemen. The injunction would have allowed Geary to offer Ellis races to national account wagering outlets that take bets by phone and online.

"I don't have any plans on opening it again as a racetrack," Geary said Wednesday. "That's for sure."

A formal announcement was expected Thursday morning.

(There were high hopes for Ellis Park when Geary bought the track in 2006. Horsemen vowed to support the racing product, and Geary planned to make the track the Del Mar or Saratoga of the Midwest.)

Earlier in June, Geary indicated the account-wagering situation was tenuous, and that the future of Ellis Park was up in the air.

The closure means Kentucky horsemen will have no place to race in the state for much of the summer as Churchill Downs' spring-summer meet ends Sunday. The closest alternative is River Downs in Cincinnati.

Rick Hiles, president of the Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, said the horsemen's revenue-sharing plan would have resulted in more money for Geary as well.

Hiles said he hated to see the decision to close Ellis. He called it "rash" and said he had hoped negotiations could continue.

Account wagering is the growth area of the $15 billion-a-year pari-mutuel market. Horsemen's groups nationwide are attempting to gain a larger share of revenues from it. Hiles said account wagering represented 5 percent of Ellis' betting last year.

He said if Geary is closing the track because of the ruling, "he was going to close it anyway."

About 400 horses are on the track's grounds. It was not clear how long the stable area will remain open.

Kentucky Horse Racing Authority executive director Lisa Underwood said Geary informed her Wednesday that the track wouldn't open for the meet.

"I'm sorry that it came to this," she said. "It's sad for the industry, but I am not surprised."

Churchill Downs' betting numbers have been down because horsemen blocked its races from being offered to national account-wagering companies, like Churchill's TwinSpires.com. Under federal law, horsemen have the right to block races from interstate betting.

The horsemen notified Geary last week that Ellis' races would be blocked as well, which prompted Geary to file a lawsuit on Tuesday in U.S. District Court, where a hearing took place in Owensboro on Wednesday.

Geary said in the lawsuit that Ellis lost $2.7 million during the 2007 meet and would be forced to close without account wagering revenue.

Geary bought the track in 2006 from Churchill Downs Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

The track, on the north bank of the Ohio River, was formerly known as Dade Park. James C. Ellis bought it and operated it from 1925 until he died in 1956, and it was renamed in his honor. Churchill Downs owned the track from 1998 until 2006, when it was sold to Geary.

A November 2005 tornado caused heavy damage at the track, but it was rebuilt for the 2006 season.

The grade III Gardenia Stakes was the track's centerpiece event.

###CJaffe, what a nice bit about Curlin, that is so neat, I just think Curlin is great. Everything in stride and so beautiful.

###Renee, so glad you're feeling a bit better. Getting legal advice either from the Labor board or lawyer, is good. Don't sign or agree to anything before you get all your information. Don't let them pressure you either. It's an emotional time and you need to be able to think things clearly. I know it's a cliche, but I think it's true. A new door will open for you, it takes time but will be worth it.

###Jonna, whew that was good news, I hope everything else works out ok, one step at a time. Keep your fur kids close they will help you through this as we will.

Have a safe day everyone.

Good Morning Gang.

Great news that the grey gelding was saved!!! Thank you Cheryl.

Hi, Mary S. We miss you.

Hoping to hear from Maribel today. And Renee, the unemployed sistas are here, waiting for you.

I try not to comment on the drugging biz. I am no expert. I only know that it weakens bones in humans, and since we are all of the same organic make up, I can only assume it affects an equine's skeletal system as well. I got an email from a doctor friend this morning. Never commented before. Here's an excerpt,(re lasix): "between causing pulmonary hemorrhaging, and no potassium after the massive lasix doses, no wonder they drop. It just may be that they are fracturing bones DURING their collapse."

Our hearts can't beat normally with low potassium levels. The cardio electrical system is triggered by potassium.

Off my pedestal now. Thanks for the Curlin tidbit, CJ.

With the news about Ellis Park.....I wonder what has, or will happen to Alpena Magic....remember the story last summer....17 YR old that was entered to race, but then was retired to do education on the backside on Saturday mornings? Someone had been in touch with the track about him during that story......I checked the DB for anything more recent than last August...but nothing......prayers today that he is safe....

Kathleen - I was wondering the same thing. I spoke with Mr. Geary, and also the operations manager (don't remember his name) last year. I have clients starting in a few minutes and can't call now. If someone can call Ellis Park, they are fairly accessible to speak with - at least they were last year. I'll try to find the thread in between today - I posted the operations managers name on that thread. Maybe it is on their website.

Prayers for the safety of all of their horses, and for Alpena Magic.

Re side effects of Lasix - whenever I have a dog or cat on lasix (have used for both species to treat congestive heart failure) - also use a vitamin/mineral supplement to replenish electrolytes like potassium (salts) that are lost with the increased urination. Would think that the knowledgeable trainers with knowledgeable vets do the same for horses on lasix - and if not, WTF is wrong with these people??? It's so simple to replenish those electrolytes . . .

## Here is another article about the closing of Ellis Park. Clearly we all know of the enormous turmoil in the racing industry. I remember how PROUD we all were of Mr. Geary - and of the wonderful job he provided for "Alpena Magic." He sounds like one man who truly "gets it." I see this tragic scenario as one more opportunity for the greedy to get greedier. The closing of this track will have a HUGE impact on the economy and welfare of many in the region .......

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Leadership of Kentucky HBPA Forces Closure of Ellis Park Thoroughbred Racing

Henderson, Kentucky. A disagreement between two outside parties will close the 86 year old Ellis Park due to lack of available revenues. According to Ron Geary, owner of Ellis Park, “Ninety percent of our revenues come from off track, internet and television broadcast wagering. The leadership of Kentucky HBPA [Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association] has an ongoing dispute with these ADWs [advanced deposit wagering companies] and Ellis Park is caught in the crossfire.”

The Kentucky HBPA sent a letter to Geary the evening of Thursday, June 26, 2008, stating they would block Ellis Park’s racing signal to all ADWs which include two national television racing channels HRTV and TVG. Geary had negotiated aggressively with the ADWs for 2008 coverage of the live meet and has more than tripled the potential commissions for Ellis Park and the KHBPA—from $4 million in handle (wagers) to an estimated $15 million. Commissions are split between Ellis Park and the Kentucky HBPA purse fund. By blocking Ellis Park’s signal, the income is lost.

“It is shocking to think that the KHBPA would choose to close down Ellis Park rather than take advantage of the additional revenue already negotiated with the ADWs for 2008,” states Geary. “They know it and they don’t care. All the KHBPA is focused on is hurting the ADWs this year so they can negotiate a higher percentage next year. What they are doing is a scorched earth strategy with huge collateral damage to the Tri-State.”

Geary filed for a restraining order with the Federal Court in Owensboro, KY against the Kentucky HBPA Tuesday, July 1, 2008, to prevent them from blocking Ellis Park’s racing signal. The Federal judge ruled today that a restraining order could not be issued, therefore, clearing the way for the KHBPA to block Ellis Park from participating with the ADWs including HRTV and TVG.

“They cut off their own nose to spite their face,” retorts Geary. “Ellis Park was at a critical point. Since I purchased the track, I have invested millions and lost millions getting her back to her old glory. We were set to open this Friday, the Fourth of July, and it was going to be a spectacular year. I love this track and I love horse racing. I am not, however, in the business to continue to spend millions of dollars per year keeping her going just to have the Kentucky HBPA pull the rug out from underneath us. It is a tragedy.”

Ellis Park is not alone. The Kentucky HBPA as well as affiliate HBPA organizations nationwide have blocked signals to ten tracks so far. Some are getting hit harder than others. For example, recent articles on bloodhorse.com cite that Calder Race Course’s handle is down 72% for the first 37 days of live racing. Churchill Downs was forced to cut purses 20% because the KHBPA also blocked their racing signal to ADWs. Each track has individual contracts with their state run HBPA and available ADWs. Ellis Park is the first to be forced to close.

The closure of Ellis Park has affected hundreds of families and the region as a whole. Ellis Park had an economic impact on the area to the tune of $60 million annually. They employed over 500 workers during live racing and another 300-400 were expected to work on the backside of the track with the horses. In 2008, over 1,000 horses were slated to be stabled at Ellis Park. Over 150,000 fans were expected to visit Ellis Park this summer.

“I am truly ashamed of the Kentucky HBPA leaders who orchestrated this ploy,” continues Geary. “They want more of a cut from the television and internet wagering sites. I have been willing to work with them to negotiate an equitable long-term agreement with the ADWs on their behalf. I offered to give them anything above and beyond the signed contract I already have with the ADWs for this year. Then I recommended a slower percentage increase than the jump they are demanding. It’s all fallen on deaf ears.”

Ellis Park’s opening day was set for this Friday, July 4, 2008. The office will remain open for the next several weeks to handle refunds of pre-paid reservations and sponsorships. Meetings will take place immediately with all employees and vendors to communicate the transition. Geary has not released information regarding the future use of the track and its property which he owns.

Ellis Park has operated thoroughbred racing for 86 consecutive years. The track was nearly destroyed by floods in 1937 and by tornadoes in 2005. In 2006, Ron Geary purchased Ellis Park and implemented a long-term plan to return the track to profitability.

Ellis Park will hold a news conference under the grandstand on Thursday, July 3, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. CDT to answer any media questions. Enter the main gate and follow the signs. No media calls will be returned before the start of the news conference.

I'd like to reiterate what Ro said about the hay prices. In Nov 06 when I adopted Cloud the price of Alfalfa was about 10 buckS a bale. It has literally doubled since. That means the cost to feed 40 rescue horses has doubled as well. We need help! The wonderful thing about MHR is that there is always a very nice prize offered. The Barbaro brooch that is being offered right now is absolutely stunning.

We've had 2 beautiful pieces or art donated for future fund raisers. One is Fred Stone's portrait of our hero Barbaro donated by Fred & Norma Stone themselves.

HI DEBBIE LA & ALL THE YOU CHILDRENS:
HERE'S JOE AND CATHY FOR PEOPLES GETTING USED TO A NEW BP MED WHO TRIED TO PUSH IN THEIR CLUTCH WHILE BRINGING THEIR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO A STOP. OH, NO MORE DRIVING FOR JONNA TODAY.......
8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888
(Affirmed: for DEE)

Thursday, July 3rd...
On June 15th police officer Tony Diaz was shot to death. Only a few miles from us. Last night at a restaurant in Woodland there was a fundraiser for his children. Cathy and I dined on chicken, pot stickers, egg rolls, and spicy chinese noodle salad.

A community coming together to help these kids. Very serene. Very spiritual. A little girl maybe 8 or 9 sitting next to me, and she says: Wow you smell nice. Just like a horse.

Always making that first good impression...

On the way home I tell Cathy we could have our own line of cosmetics. Horse cologne. Horse after shave. How about a bar of Mustang soap? Thoroughbred body lotion. Friesian deodorant. Later today I will call Ralph Lauren.

Back home, 113 horses making noise, poop on top of poop. Four new horses from Northern California race tracks yesterday. One new horse from a feed lot in Wilton. Dust, with two or three billion flies. Smoke and heat. Dealing with horse killers. Horse abuse. Horse starvation. This is all I want to do. Horses are my entire existence.

Officer Tony, and we have no real connection. I know people who knew him. Every day Officer Tony went to work and protected us. A good guy. Coached sports. His kids were his world.

A man from a magazine back east wanted to interview me, and I told him no. A network wanted to interview me and I told them no. People do bad things to horses. Canada and Mexico turn horses into cheese steak sandwiches. Almost daily on the news there are horror stories about horse racing. Nothing more I can add to the mix.

Unless you want to talk about a good man who loved his kids and tried to live life right. Who never spoke unkindly about others. The first person to help when help was needed.

Late at night with my 113 horses, and Jewels the dog wanting to go back inside. Cathy and I are incredibly blessed. I wish parts of this planet were different. I wish Officer Tony was still with his kids. I wish all horses could be happy and safe. The fundraiser was a wake up call. Take time to smell the horse poop. All that means the most, horses, our community, our friends. Rock and roll on the radio. Giving Thanks for this life...

Joe

Four new race horses yesterday.

Top Left: He is just 2 years old, and he still has testicles. Already I am in love with this little guy. Very sweet, and since it is almost Independence Day, and since Indy is in his pedigree, we are going to call him Indy. He spit out his peppermint.

Top Right: He is 4, and tall. Since Speed is in his name, we are going to call him Speedy.

Bottom Left: He is also 4, and built very nicely. In honor of Officer Tony, his new name is now Officer Tony. He loves peppermints.

Bottom Right: A cutie, and since Liberty is in his pedigree, and this is almost the 4th of July, we are going to call him Liberty.

EXTRA THURSDAY July 3 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List NOW posted below and at this DB Thread:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=25982.1

(These are Senators today. Tomorrow HAHS will again be posting its special NBFA list. They are targeting Senators on TTh and Black Reps on MWF.)

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB Thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that all three former horse slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently; and Cavel (Dekalb IL) lost its appeal and the US Sup Ct just refused further review. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Thursday 7/03/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

extra Thursday 7/03 HAHS target list

HS History: Though none of these Senators cosponsored S 1915 in the 109th Congress, they all have voted for anti-slaughter measures in the past.

NEBRASKA (2nd part)
Senator Ben Nelson
Fax: 202-228-0012 Phone: 202-224-6551
720 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-2705

NEVADA
Senator Harry Reid
Fax: 202-224-7327 Phone: 202-224-3542
528 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-2803

NOTE from CJ - because of Sen. Reid's Senate Leadership position, it is unlikely he will cosponsor; IMO - acknowledge this to the aide you talk to, but ask them to convey to Sen. Reid your hopes that he will do everything within his power to get S 311 to a vote in the Senate despite the "hold" by [disgraced] Sen. Larry Craig and his cronies.

NEW HAMPSHIRE
Senator Judd Gregg
Fax: 202-224-4952 Phone: 202-224-3324
393 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-2903

Senator John Sununu
Fax: 202-228-4131 Phone #: 202-224-2841
111 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-2904

IF you're done with today's ABR/AAHS Instructions & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to post 2 of the Thread noted above, for a good alternate target list of Senators compiled by AWI/SAPL.

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! Go get 'em.

Why did I not play the Pick 3 NM Lottery on Monday!?!?!?!?!?! For $1, it would have paid $160, and bought 18 bales of hay. I play the same numbers - 488 - 6 times a week. 588 came in on Monday night. I am going to be very strict from here on out. Pick 3, 6x weekly, the Powerball 2x weekly.

I could just kick myself. But I'll just slap myself in the face throughout the day as a reminder. DANG!

CJ, I'm not sure how electrolytes could be replaced while the horse is in the throws of racing. They might be fine coming out of the gate, but get depleted halfway through, or something. Other drugs may destroy potassium levels as well. It is an interesting concept that a horse may start to collapse and then fracture bones on their way down. I never heard it put quite that way. It sure would explain Eight Belles and others like her, wouldn't it?

Posted by: Margie at July 3, 2008 8:04 PM

Is there anything that we ALL ARE DOING during the 4th...that we could pass up $1, $2...for a bale of hay, $5, or maybe $10...to help rescues....

when we grab that hot dog, or hamburger, or something cold to drink....could we pass up one..and send money to the rescues...look at what we would be feeding...and we shall receive many blessings for it...please.

Hello Everyone,

I've been recovering from some medical issues and haven't been posting much but wanted to wish everyone a very happy and safe Fourth of July weekend!

In celebrating our independence, we will also remember the heroic horses who served on battlefields to make it possible. Now it's our turn to pay them back and fight for their independence!!

Happy Holiday,
Shelley

Joan and all, I guess we really need to start becoming creative and think way outside the box to get what the horses need. I am not above begging and crying to get something for them. A local rescue/therapeutic riding association here has just acquired a local artist to do drawing lessons at the sanctuary. The artist donates her time, and the lesson fees go right to the sanctuary.

Whatever it takes.

Somebody cancelled and we're filling in Friday night - will be the band at an art opening at the dogfriendly bar that's our homebaseplace - and beginning tonight (last night's short set near home doesn't count) we have FIVE NIGHTS IN A ROW playing gigs. At the same location. Don't have to break down and set up equipment. BUT at my age it's really hard on these old bones being up until 3 am - and I have to maintain April's insulin schedule - not complaining, just stating da facts! By way of saying - don't send out a search party if you don't hear from me for the next few days. I'll prob check in but need to nap a lot which I should be doing now - gotta get some revised flyers out too. Click on my name below for the full schedule for the weekend, if anybody is around and about Chicago Thursday (tonight) through Monday - we're at that location every single night. (Tonight isn't listed on the website, it's another guy's Open Mike but Fred is filling in for him. BTW - our Sunday Open Mike was named in last week's Chicago Reader as the best Open Mike in Chicago. I'm impressed!

Have a great weekend all - keep calling and faxing - they'll get the info when they get back - and please all the horses and riders be safe . . .

Hi Jonna

I did take linosopril works great, only side effect I had was a lousy dry cough that woke me up at night. other than that, it works great ACE inhibitors are supposed to have fewer side effects but i was better off going back to a betablocker that are supposed to be more effective for early age onset high bp. maybe worth a try if you can't get accustomed to the linosopril??

HAPPY 4th TO EBBERBUDDY!!!

THANK YOU for LOVE and PRAYERS.....

The Wall Study was very sophisticated but a bit daunting!! It took them approx 2hrs to do it because they extracted blood first and my veins are so poor after chemo that the first one ruptured and there weren't a lot to choose from!!! When we finally got one to work it was in the top of my hand and she had to use a very small butterfly needle. My circulation to my hands is so poor that she literaly had to pump my fingers to get her vial out....

It is an interesting test....they take a vial of blood out...they separate the red blood cells out and tag them with a nuclear marker ....wash out the vein with solution and re inject you with your own blood. Then they scan you twice with the MRi machine. The second scan goes all the way around and shoots pictures of the heart even from the backside! Very technical...THEY MEAN BUSINESS HERE!! It is hard to hold your hands very still over your head for 20 minutes when you have arthritis in your rotator cuff!!! OUCH!!!

NOW..we play the waiting game while they evaluate and I'm told this is the "gold standard" of tests so we are at least on the way to completion???
I thought of you ALL so many times during the day and what you ALL mean to me in my life !!!
It was my lucky day the day Barbaro introduced me to y'all....I hope you know that??? ALWAYS ??!!!

Enough of this teary eyed stuff...

JOE, ANOTHER SAD LOSS OF A GOOD, GOOD HUMAN. WITH TIES TO THE FOB, I BELIEVE..........................
***************************************************
(You have to go to TBFRIENDS site to see the horses Susie saved.)
***************************************************
Friday, July 4th... On this day of liberty and freedoms, we honor Susie Ingersoll who yesterday passed away. A good friend to us. A good friend to horses.

Her daughter is Stephanie Breaux, who does so much for Cathy and I. Son in law Lorenzo. We share in their loss.

On this day of grief I am not going to bore you with my usual drivel. A time out. We honor a wonderful lady who loved kids and reality shows. Susie would always tell me what was happening on Dancing With The Stars. I so looked forward to our phone conversations.

I will be back tomorrow with more of my horse stuff.

Rest In Peace Susie.

Joe

Horses which Susie rescued:

Top Left: This beautiful thoroughbred mare came from a horse killer, and her name is Susie.

Top Right: This mare was purchased at auction with money from Susie Ingersoll. Her name is Criamar.

Bottom Left: Susie and Tbfriends were partners on this sad mare from a feed lot.

Bottom Right: Susie and Tbfriends were partners on this gelding from the race track. We call him Yummy, and he came to us with a broken cannon bone. Yummy is all better now.

Happy 4th of July to you all. WOW! we have raised over $900,000 and rescued over 2300 horses. And all because of a horse named Barbaro who was born with a great destiny. How we miss him but his legacy is amazing and will continue forever more.

#### Jonna

So glad we looked after you. I have just been looking at my calendar today and here is what it says :

Independence Day, as commented on by English expatriate Frances Trollope in 'Domestic Manners of the Americans (1832)': "On the 4th of July, the hearts of people seem to awaken from a three hundred and sixty-four days' sleep; they appear high-spirited, gay, animated, socially generous - or at least liberal in expense - and would they but refrain from spitting on that hallowed day, I should say that on the 4th of July at least, they appear to be an amiable people...Had they not the bad taste and bad feeling to utter an annual oration with unvarying abuse of the mother country, to say nothing of the war-like manifesto called the Declaration of Independence, our gracious king himself might look upon the scene and say that it was good - nay, even rejoice that twelve millions of bustling bodies at four thousand miles distance from the throne should make their own laws and drink tea after the fashion that pleased them best".

Well, I think we are over the "unpleasantness" now and share a sense of humour (humor!) if not a common spelling. Enjoy your day.

HERE'S A THOUGHT:
I think we should hire MARGIE to work with Daryl and John Holland as a LOBBYIST. This is not an original thought. I am feeling we need lots more PRESENCE than we have had to date.

FACETIME. Guys. Push is coming to shove. How many more years can our horses WAIT????

(PS: re the lobbyists idea: we HAVE to play the way the Pro-Slaughter people play. Every other cause up in that wicked city has a damned lobbyist has a lobbyist--or 12.)

I just am not sure at all that what we are doing at this point is working. This is no passing of judgement. Just thinking aloud. Many are feeling despair about the 110th slipping right through our fingers this summer. Me too.

I'm not able to attend the events but being with you all here is really extra special.

Hi everyone:

Please do not take my silence as a sign that I have left Barbaro’s work. I will never………never quit. Our horses will be safe from the horrors of the slaughter industry. I made that promise to many people……….and I keep my promises.

I am working with a US Senator, behind the scenes, and he is trying to get things moving. I have asked him to get meetings for us with fence-sitting senators, the RNC leaders and (oh ish) Larry Craig. I met that %$##%$%%^ last December when he made his intentions known in senate chambers to derail S. 311. I wrote a point-counterpoint letter to his drivel, delivered said letter to senate leaders and Craig’s office. The idiot just happened to be there and was leaving when I walked in. He shook my hand………and to this day that hand gets washed 1,784,862 times…………….per day. And thoughts of him….well, my shower and brain have a connection……..every time I think of Craig my shower comes on automatically. Yup, in I go.

Okay, serious! Yes, the senator is working for us. He will provide insight and guidance how to work with the senators in the future……….how we can communicate our message without all the filters (aides, etc). Should this congress not pass the bills, we are setting down a foundation for the next congress.

I told this senator we are tired of playing their game. It has gotten us nowhere. We need to meet with our elected officials. I told him that we are professional, educated and have proven ourselves to the point where we have earned the right to audience. He agrees. And I believe he will help us achieve our goal: breaking down the layers of insulation that elected officials hide behind.

We have done everything they have asked: e-mails, calls and faxes. And since December………………virtually no progress in the senate………..only a few new co-sponsors in the house.

DC ignores the rest of the country. No more! The only way to get this done………..to save Barbaro’s brothers and sisters…..is for us to educate the elected officials face-to-face.

I have met a couple house reps and a couple senators……………who knew nothing yet their offices were provided with all pertinent information. Information that barks loud and clear……..”Horse slaughter is not necessary!” Yet…………..we are ignored.

New, tougher strategies are required.

I will keep you updated on the information from the senator………whose name will remain in the background for now!

What a marvelous group of people Barbaro put together. This family will complete his tasks.

Love to all!

Daryl

*&%$# SPAM!

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at July 4, 2008 10:13 PM

jonna, you are right as we need lobbyests. I think we are fighting against big money and in Washington money is about all that counts when it comes to getting bills passed. I think. I always wonder about "kickbacks". I know here in Texas we have much oil that congress wont let us drill for. I know many people who have wells but the congress will only let them bring up only a limited amount each day on a pumping day. None of these wells aere affecting the environment or the wild animals. well, heck I may be all wrong. I would let them drill a well in my living room. I dont know how I got off on this. I just get frustrated with our present congress. Hay, if they got oil in my living room we could hire a bunch of lobbyists. fight fire with fire.

Debbie,

Thank you so much for posting that message from Daryl. I was just wondering earlier this week if we lost him in our fight. I am thrilled to hear that he is still working behind the scenes to help our beloved horses from going to slaughter. I can't wait to hear what he and the senator say.

Run with the wind Barbaro. We will protect your brothers and sisters.

Happy Fourth of July everyone.

In my neighborhood, we're celebrating not just the holiday, but also electricity. We had a hugh storm here last Friday and our immediate area had been without power from last Friday until Wednesday. We were blessed with cool weather in the evenings so we were grateful for that.

Reading how many horses have been saved by FOBs is remarkable and the work you have all done is nothing short of tremendous.

Move love to you all, always.
