Barbaro Updates: 621

updates are now here.

Update 3683: Aidan O'Brien won his sixth Irish Derby today, equaling Vincent O'Brien's record: FIRE SCORCHES TO DERBY DELIGHT.

Update 3682: Lovely weather and a pleasant morning's work at Woodbine. Eight sets, four before the break and four after the break. For the most part mine went nicely. One colt was a little "excited" and reared up a couple of times when Larry, one of the outriders, grabbed a hold of him. No harm done, just trying to teach him a little patience, which does not always work! We have a runner this afternoon as well as a few paddock schoolers, so I will be heading back over a little later.

Update 3681: 10-1 shot Mast Track went wire-to-wire in the Hollywood Gold Cup. He was able to set easy early fractions and then hold off the field. Student Council stalked the pace and finished third. Perfect Drift was never threatening: Mast Track Finds Gold for Frankel, Baze.

Today it is the Irish Derby, which has lost the Epsom Derby winner New Approach to a bruised foot: NEW APPROACH OUT OF IRISH DERBY.

Update 3680: Just got a phone call from Texas (Eddie who I used to work with) and "Superstar" Erik McNeil won his first race today aboard Swamp Gator. Very cool! Watching the major races at Belmont, it appeared to me that Gabriel Saez was outridden in a four horse race aboard the short priced favorite Proud Spell. She might not have won anyway, but certainly was not helped: Music Note Wins 'Goose; Proud Spell DQ'd. Dutrow keeps winning Grade 1 races, and this one another one for IEAH Stables: Frost Giant Shocks Suburban at 40-1. And who was second ? Gabriel Saez!

I was at Woodbine watching the races and celebrating Jen's birthday!

Update 3679: Paul Moran writes favorably about my Bloodhorse Q & A: On the weekend reading list.

Update 3678: A very wet morning this morning at Woodbine. In this kind of weather it's always debatable whether you should put on your rain gear. The warm climate makes that not an automatic choice, especially if the rain is just on and off. Anyway, for the first set it looked like the rain had eased off. No rain gear. We left the barn to an absolute down pour combined with some distant thunder and lightening. Once soaked there is no point in worrying about wearing rain gear, just stay soaked all morning. Anyway, we had only five sets so not so bad. All my horses galloped nicely for a relatively easy, although wet, morning's work.

One of the jockey's here, Slade Callaghan, read my Bloodhorse Q & A and then these sites yesterday. He was pretty impressed with things and gave me a good tip on a cheaper phone service! Very cool!

Update 3677: Chelokee continues to improve: On the Mend: Chelokee's Prognosis Good, excerpt:

"Chelokee is doing great," said Bramlage of the colt, who sustained his injuries during the Alysheba Stakes (gr. III) on the Kentucky Oaks day undercard at Churchill Downs. "He's begun his rehab and is walking several times a day now. We started to wean him out of bandages, and he's in no other support. If he had fractures, we probably would have dismissed him already, but with the severe ligimentis injuries, we're taking a little more time than average, but he's doing well."

Dutrow has some harsh words for some of his colleagues and the press coverage he has received: Dutrow fires back over bad press, excerpt:

Dutrow, 48, is particularly upset with the assertion that he has 72 rulings against him, which has been widely reported by high-profile mainstream media outlets. Before the news conference, Dutrow had an exasperated look on his face when he reviewed a list of his infractions by the Association of Racing Commissioners International that included such negligible entries as not having foal papers on record or not having owner's colors in the jockeys' quarters. There are even multiple references in the list to his license being restored to good standing.

Encouraging news in the article about Chelokee, and a VERY handsome picture of our fren!!

###Looks like there is something besides the mainstream media coverage of the political scene that gets people upset. Giving Mr. Dutrow the benefit of the doubt on his "misadventures" prior to Big Brown et al, let us hope that his irritation at their coverage of his "curriculum vitae" is a bit "embroidered."

###Lovely horses for adoption at Tranquility Farm. They are about 75 miles from me and one of these days (when I can afford the gas there and back), I'm going to visit.

###Alex, thank you. Enjoyed very much your Q&A.

###Have a good day everyone. Prayers to those in need.

###OOOPS. Too early and not enough coffee yet:

I MEANT to write: "Giving Mr. Dutrow the benefit of the doubt on his 'misadventures' prior to Big Brown et al, let us hope that his irritation IS BECAUSE their coverage of his 'curriculum vitae' is a bit 'embroidered.'"

Good morning, fellow Fans!

Thanks to everyone's efforts, Frosty, the gray standardbred from Maine has a new home. He is safe!

Great news about Chelokee. I hope to one day see some of his sons and daughters in the winners circle.

And, finally, a big THANK YOU to Alex for representing the Fans of Barbaro and all who care about the welfare of our equine friends. You are surely making a difference!

Precious words from our friend Anne Brennan: Words that are ironically true about so much in life...especially that there must be darkness to have light ( I, like Kay, do badly in all things until I have had enough coffee....)

But please read. The strength that Erin is giving back to this family is astonishing. Again proving, I guess, that if you ask, it shall be given...

Robyn: I CANNOT believe that you were at Churchill and witnessed those two breakdowns. There was much heated discussion about all that. So sorry you had to have that memory firsthand.

Prayers for Nala and all other fur-bearing companions who are in need...and peoples too for that matter. And for any who missed Alex's dialogue with Bloodhorse on the 26th: GO BACK AND READ. Debbie LA exerpted much of it, and there is also a complete transcript. GREAT GREYT (haha) stuff. Not to be missed.

Good Luck and a safe run fro Tiago

Lately, whenever a trainer ALLEDGELY has one of their horses tested positive for drugs, all we have are excuses. Let's hope, since the tip of the iceberg has been exposed it doesn't result in a msjor meltdown. It's time for the industry to step up and take responsibility for a problem that has been glossed over for years.

Good news of Chelokee and Day Bue. Praying their healing will continue.

Also praying for safe racing today. Tiago, Gabriel Saez and Proud Spell, for all of them. Come home safely.

Just had to post Harriette's devotion for today. One thing we all do here at Alex Brown Racing, in large amounts, is LOVE:

June 28 Cherokee Devotional

To love is a privilege. To love kids and cats and dogs(&horses) and chums, to adore an old one, to even love a material thing or place--this is life!

Love all you can. It is better than medicine, health to the body and soul, and it is scot-free. Laugh freely and with total enjoyment for this is a part of love. Forget the reasons why you should not love;though they are many, they give nothing and take everything. Sweeten your life--love something dearly and it will add to your well-being.

It is that kind id paradise which he only by his manner of life on earth, is fitted to enjoy.

A group of FOB's are planning on attending the Arlington Million this year. It is Saturday, August 9th and we need to buy our tickets in the next week or so. If interested, see the thread on the discussion board under horse racing.

All,
Please say some prayers for FOB Blondwyn Newton's dog, Magic; he has just finished chemo for his cancer, and he had to have surgery this week for an undiagnosed growth that was causing some bleeding. He is at UF Vet hospital in Gainsville, FL. Biopsy report not due back until Tuesday, so these are anxious days for our Blondwyn.

Just sent this email to the TVG Commentators - here's their email addy if anyone else wants to chime in here; tracksidelive@TVG.com

TO - Commentators on TVG Trackside Live

Hi guys - you all do a great job - I watch you every weekend and during the week too when I can. I can't'/don't bet from my location (Hammond IN) but am a big horselover and race fan.

Also am an anti-slaughter advocate - and as such, and in the wake of lots of recent publicity making tracks and trainers look bad for letting horses go to slaughter (HBO Realsports documentary that premiered 5/12/08, that CBC documentary, Inside Edition, etc etc) - Suffolk Downs (whose races I see you cover) has taken a bold, brave stand against this. This can only be good for the industry, IMO.

Here's the info, you prob already know about it, but I wanted to give you a kick and say here, you should mention this ON THE AIR, it is GOOD FOR RACING and certainly kudos are due to the powers that be at Suffolk Downs for pioneering this.

Here's the link, and below, for yr convenience, I have copied the story below

http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/national-news/2008/June/27/Suffolk-Downs-begins-zero-tolerance-slaughter-policy.aspx

Suffolk Downs begins zero-tolerance slaughter policy
by Steve Myrick

Suffolk Downs has established a new policy holding trainers accountable when their horses are sold for slaughter.

Sam Elliott, the track’s vice president for racing, has informed the leadership of the New England Horseman's Benevolent and Protective Association that any trainer found to have sold a horse for slaughter will have his stalls revoked and be denied stalls at any time in the future.

Elliott said the plan has the complete backing of Richard Fields, the real estate and casino developer who purchased a controlling interest in Suffolk Downs last year.

“If a horse goes from here to the slaughterhouse, that's completely unacceptable,” Elliott said. “That trainer won't be here. I don't think that's anybody we'd want to have around. Mr. Fields is a strong believer in retirement idea. He's a big backer of it. The two are incompatible.”

Elliott commended local horsemen and several local Thoroughbred retirement organizations for offering several options for retiring racehorses.

“I think it's become a non-issue,” Elliott said. “The best way to make it a real non-issue is to have this kind of sanction in place. That's our policy. My hope is we never have to use it.”

Elliott intends to address horsemen at a general meeting within the next two weeks.

“They would have our backing,” said Al Balestra, president of the New England HBPA. “It's not the proper thing to do, not with all the options they have. There's no reason why that should happen nowadays. There shouldn't be any horses going to killers. It's a different era in racing, it just shouldn't happen.”

Michael Blowen, president of Old Friends Farm in Midway, Kentucky, and an outspoken advocate for Thoroughbred retirement issues, said the new Suffolk Downs policy is the best news he has heard in years.

“That's great. I've never heard of it before. You don't know how many horses this is going to help,” Blowen said. “Just the threat of knowing that if they ever found out that you sold a horse for slaughter you could lose your stalls may prevent a lot of this from gong on in the first place. The other tracks will start looking at that.”

Blowen noted that it may be difficult to prove a direct link between a trainer and a horse that winds up in a slaughter pen.

“It is hard, it's a nasty circuitous trail, and of course anybody that does it doesn't want to get caught,” he said.

Blowen, who worked as a hot walker at Suffolk Downs in the late 1990s, said he remembers gut-wrenching scenes in the track's stable area of horses being loaded onto trucks bound for slaughterhouses.

“I still think it's an issue,” he said. “It's a problem with every track. Since the fairs have been closed in Massachusetts, it's not as big a problem. It's not that hard to do a better job. All we have to do is find people that are willing to play by the rules.”

Diana Baker, a former Thoroughbred Retirement Fund board member who has been involved with several high profile cases, said the new policy is a positive step but that she believes there are still some horses going from the track to slaughterhouses.

“I hope it’s not just lip service,” Baker said. “It would be a breath of fresh air to have someone in racing actually protect the horses.”

She agreed that it may be difficult to make a direct connection between a trainer and a horse sold for slaughter.

“That’s a tough call, it will be interesting to see how it plays out,” she said. “It’s an open secret how these horses get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B.’ The trainers always say they don’t know. When you’re pulling horses that were trained or owned by the same people over and over again, it doesn’t add up, it doesn’t make sense.”

[end of article]

THANKS GUYS - keep up the good work.
CJ in Hammond IN [end of email; my contact info omitted]

But the rest of the story is, when I called TVG to get the email addy for the Commentators, the guy who answered the phone, Shawn, was very helpful, and while I was waiting for him to find the addy, I said, if you have a minute I'll tell you what I want to suggest they mention on the air, what's going on at Suffolk Downs re horse slaughter, and he said WHAT? I want that to end, he said - I told him about the pioneering move by Suffolk Downs re zero tolerance, trainers would be booted if track found out their horses were going to slaughter - he agreed we need the federal law but did not have a clue what to do - so I gave him the AAHS website, and also mine with pvt contact info, and he promised to check it out and pass it on. YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOU WILL TOUCH . . . WHO WILL IN TURN, ACT . . .

And now Starting Gate is on, I'll have to get their email addy as well!

Edgar's race on now - missed name of his horse, darnit - Hi Daddy and Obscurity - too close to call, photo - Edgar is on Hi Daddy - very very tight

Posted by: CJaffe at June 28, 2008 6:36 PM

still waiting for result of the photo - Edgar Prado on Dutrow-trained Hi Daddy? or the other one? (I love those tight races, don't you? Though I also love to see a win by a huge margin, those close finishes are so thrilling and those horses trying so hard ---) still waiting...

Obscurity over Hi Daddy in the photo (by what looked like a whisker...) I would have called this a dead heat . . .

News announced while waiting for result of the photo:

Declan's Moon to retire - due to a breathing problem, that started bothering him after his knee surgery. (This accounts for poor recent racing record.) They are saying he is retiring "racing sound." They're talking about him maybe coming back as a track pony - about how retired track horses sometimes become depressed at the farm and need to be at the track -

Just got this lovely response from the Racing Secy at Suffolk Downs shortly after I sent mine off.

I had written:

THANK YOU for the new anti-slaughter policy at your racetrack. You are pioneers in this campaign to end horse slaughter/export for slaughter of American Horses, including TBs. I am so proud of you all for doing this.THANK YOU on behalf of the horses.CJaffe www.americansagainsthorseslaughter.com

***************************************************
Saturday, June 28th...
So many horror stories coming from friends who work at race tracks. From Hollywood Park we are accepting a filly who was tied to the rear of her stall and beaten until her butt bled. All she did wrong was finish last in a race. For being slow she was punished.

And now in Northern California county fair racing has begun. Always our busy time of year. Last summer during county fair racing, 38 horses made the long walk up our driveway. All sorts of problems. Broken knees, broken ankles, and even a broken jaw.

Many so called horse racing experts are predicting most tracks will be closed in the next 5 years. Attendance is way down. TV ratings in the toilet. Only Big Brown trying for a Triple Crown brought above average television ratings.

Haley is 19, and she goes to school in Berkeley. On our ranch Haley fell in love with a gray gelding called Lit Royale. When Lit Royale was adopted last weekend I knew Haley was going to phone. And she did. Haley said darn it, she wanted Lit Royale so bad. She was looking at boarding stables close to her apartment. Haley thought she had time. As I explain to everyone, if a good home comes along, I must take advantage. A young girl Jessa also fell in love with Lit Royale. An all around amazing horse. Jessa was first to sign the Bill of Sale.

I reminded Haley she lives next to a race track called Golden Gate Fields. I told Haley go to the backstretch entrance and ask for a day pass. Walk around and tell trainers you are looking for a gelding to buy. You might as well be carrying free doughnuts. You will be swarmed.

Haley called me later crying. There was a black gelding, and when the trainer brought him from his stall the poor horse could hardly walk. The trainer said give me $2,000.00 and the horse is yours. Haley asked what is wrong with him? The trainer said not much, he is just a little sore. Haley thought his cannon bone was broken. He stood on three legs.

An older groom, Haley says he was at least 50, asked Haley for a date. 9:00 in the morning, and the old groom smelled of whiskey.

Haley could not get out of there fast enough. All she can think about is the sad black gelding. On the phone she tells me Thanks For Nothing. From now on she will search for her new horse only from Tbfriends.

On my visits to the backstretch of race tracks, everyone is nice as can be. I have seldom seen horses treated badly.

Horse killer Manny Phelps has a race horse gelding with filling in his left front tendon. 40 cents a pound. The gelding raced at Pleasanton County Fair. Six hours later he is at a feed lot in Wilton.

Coming to us early next week are three race horses from Northern California. And two race horses from Southern California.

All the time I am asked, either from e-mails or on the phone, why race horses? Why do I bother? A never ending supply.

If you have ever been with a race horse, felt his thunder, felt his will to live, you would know why. No animal is more loyal. No animal more loving. A race horse would literally die for you. At race tracks throughout America they die for our entertainment everyday.

Enjoy your still smokey Saturday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Top Left: We have had good luck placing horses who need a new home fast. Just from showing you their picture on my morning journal. Here is an 8 year old pinto mare. She is 14.3 hands. She loads and ties. The mare has a bucking problem. My cell is 530-383-2120. I do all the screening. The mare is free, and she lives in Northern California.

Top Right: We said goodbye to cute Justin yesterday. A quarter horse, Justin has a wonderful new home in Reno.

Bottom Left & Right: Very smokey again yesterday.

##### trying to keep up with the racing action to report here!

Dear FOBS,

As you know Animals' Angels are the ones out there EXPOSING the cruelties of horse slaughter and filing reports with officials so the criminals are fined and EXPOSED.

They also make sure the reports are provided to our legislators and that is so important to the anti horse slaughter legislation.

I just learned that because of Animals' Angels persistence the poor horses that are in those Texas pens awaiting their grisly and horrifying death, at least now have CLEAN WATER to drink and HAY to eat. So even though the horses are doomed for a barbaric death they at least have food and water while they stand in those pens in the awful triple digit heat.

Animals' Angels are planning another extensive investigation that will surely expose more cruelty and abuse to our equines headed to slaughter. This investigation will be quite expensive with the cost of EVERYTHING these days and could use some help. We are trying to raise $2,100. by July 15th. We currently need $1,520. If everyone forwards this message to their contacts this amount shouldn't be that hard to raise.

Animals' Angels are the only organization that is out there literally putting their life on the line to help the horses. If you can afford to help them help the horses it is much appreciated.

Remember that no amount is too small and it ALL adds up :)

Thank you to everyone that has already provided financial support to these investigations.

If you go to donations for exposure there is a paypal button.

Mark the donation for Horse Slaughter Investigation USA

Please send checks or money orders to:

Animals' Angels USA, PO BOX 1056, Westminster, MD 21158

They need OUR help to keep exposing the realities of what is going on!

Thank you!

Well, thanks anyway, Debbie. Sometimes I ask my 6 year old nephew what to do but he is out of town. These kids start computers in the first grade. Sometimes he looks at me like DUH! Are you from the stone age or what? ha. #######Have to get off of her and prepare Chief as we are upposed to have severe thunderstorms with large hail, lightening, and a tornado warning for all weekend. You might notice that my typing isnt so good either. Sometimes my keys stick. ################## as far as the guy who whipped the filly so severely that she bled I know some redneck cowboys that would love to meet the guy and give him the taste of a whip.

Heartwarming story of Sarge, a neglected horse taken in by Strawberry Mountain Mustangs, who is being adopted by a military family who lost a son in Iraq.

Excerpt from Darla's DB post:

One thing has led to another, and the Moore family is working to prepare their new property and adopt Sarge. (Sarge is an 11 yr old TB gelding we took in through animal control last winter.)

Sarge will become the riderless horse for military services in our area. He will never be ridden, just loved and cherished. (What more could the big lug ask for?) [end excerpt]

## Sherry here - checking in. Morning began EARLY - at 4:45 am ..... met up with 3 others and we trailered to the river for lovely ride - saw "wild horses" drinking and bathing at river's edge ........ the slime legislators don't know the joy of being on a trail ride w/a 4-legged best friend .... 101 degrees at completion of ride - grateful to have been out early.
Just about to climb down and our FsOB Michelle Tolley called en route to spend a week volunteering and caring for the Sugarcreek Memorial Day saved horses. Joyous anticipation and huge sadness shared over the passing of a most beautiful and loyal -to -his wife horse ..... sigh.
Home w/iced coffee in hand ...... to catch up with ABR, Joe, my hero at tbfriends (grrrrr ...) and Jim, of Tierra Madre Horse Sanctuary ....
who could use some assistance.
Is anyone aware of any rescues who are recycling old cell phones, chargers, etc for fundraising ?

Safety to all horses racing ..... and their riders ..... prayers for all - peoples and their fur-friends. Special kudos and much gratitude for Alex - and your faithful committment to make others "see it and get it."

Hugs to all ...... Sherry - out Arizona way !

Well... now...

Just caught up on a couple of days' reading here, and I have to say that, even though I wish Big Brown well and have never had a problem with UPS, the biggest "Brown" of all is our very own Alex!

Alex, this is quite an intriguing little strip tease you've been doing for the last several months! You're like an onion, with many layers; every time we think we've found out all there is to know, off comes another layer and you surprise us yet again!

What you said in your Bloodhorse Q&A about circumstances putting you in the right place at the right time is an understatement. I am so glad you were there, with exactly the right skill set and exactly the right mindset at exactly the right moment to start this phenomenal movement.

Anyway, that said, it is only part of the reason I came out of lurkdom today. I have become concerned that some who post on this board are developing a kind of lynch mob mentality (or "shoot first and ask questions later", if you prefer). I've been dangerously close to buying into that myself, and it has made me think hard about what I say - especially on the subjects of Rick Dutrow's and, now, Steve Asmussen's recent troubles.

We all need to remember that any one of us could at any time in our lives be unjustly accused of doing something of which we are innocent. I've worked in foster care and I know how difficult it can be for those kids to shed the label of "past offender", and how often one or two mistakes just never seem to go away, until finally it can jeopardize their entire future.

We need to remember to subscribe to the "innocent until proved guilty" school of thought and focus on gathering information before making condemnations.

I believe we are about to see another incidence of someone being in the right place at the right time with the right skills and mindset. I'm talking about the owner/lawyer who has come forward to represent Steve Asmussen. Her statement was simple almost to the point of insult, and was something we all should have been saying.

So, let's keep our hangin' ropes coiled up for the time being, and see how this plays out in the proper legal setting. I don't want to believe that an habitual cheater could produce a Curlin or Big Brown, and I don't think good people are so easily fooled as to continue to work for crooks; so I am very inclined to extend the benefit of the doubt to both men and wait and see what happens.

Okay, that's all, folks!

Edgewise-

"We need to remember to subscribe to the "innocent until proved guilty" school of thought and focus on gathering information before making condemnations."

So right... I can't really figure out why Dutrow is being crucified - in the press or elsewhere.

Is it because he didn't give us the first triple crown winner in thirty years after all the hype?

He apparently made some bad personal choices quite a while ago, and has an unfortunate habit of putting his foot in his mouth when interviewed, but the facts don't seem to support that he is such an unscrupulous trainer.

I'm really tired of this jumping on the bandwagon mentality... it happened with the poor jockey who rode Eight Belles and again with Kent Desormeaux.

Judge not lest ye be judged...

Thanks for your insightful comments.

Alex,

I was at Lone Star today and saw Erik win his first race. The track announcer made a very big deal about it! When Erik and Swamp Gator came into the winners circle, Steve was pumping both fists in the air and yelling, "We won, We won!" He had the biggest smile on his face when Erik rode in. The crowd around the winners cirlce gave him a big hand as he rode in and after the picture was taken. It was relly great to see.

After the race, I asked him for his autogragh. I said I had to had it since this was his first win. As he handed the program back to me, he said "Tell Alex hi. I wish he was here." This time I didn't mention your name. He must have remembered me when I spoke to him after his second race. I think you have a cool little friend who is starting a good career!! His record at LSP is 6 1-2-0. He also came in 4th in the next race. That is very good for a brand new jockey!!

########## re George Carlin (RIP)

Just noticed Saturday Night Live (10:30 Central) on NBC is running a show with George Carlin as host and Janis Ian (remember "At Seventeen [I learned the truth"?) - a chance to see George Carlin in action. I believe he hosted the very first SNL - don't know if that is the one they're showing - but whatever one, it will be good, IMO.

The other night I saw what I think was his last HBO Special, "It's Bad For You" - very worth watching, am sure it will be re-running. Done within the past year I think.

Kate here - Update on Beau. We had some good news and some bad news. We knew that Beau had a problem with his right front knee but he also has problems with all his legs (pastern) and ring bone in left front leg. He also has some neurological problems with his spine which is causing the weakness in his hind quarters (dog tracking). On top of that he is older than we were told - at least 25 and has skin allergies. Now the good news. All his vitals are good, heart, lungs, temp. He's eating good and able to walk pretty good considering. Anyway, we've started him on some supplements and medicine for his skin. He got all his shots and coggins test. In 2 weeks we are giving him a steroid shot for his skin. The vet said that he should do OK as long as he's not ridden which we had no intentions of doing. He was really happy to get home - just about trotting out to the other horses. He is such a sweet boy. We will give him lots of TLC and keep him as comfortable as possible for the rest of his life. Thanks for your prayers.

(about not rushing to judgment re Dutrow and Asmussen) - I concur and feel there is way too much rush to judgment - not only here, of course, but in general - people tend to believe accusations. Having worked in criminal defense law most of my adult life, I must say it is a natural and human response, but one that I strive not to succumb to, and I appreciate greatly Deirdre's post that I referenced.

Good night my sweet FOB's the best people in the world! Get some rested, Back to work on Monday.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at June 29, 2008 1:59 AM

Thank you, Christian and CJaffe.

I should have added that I hold everyone here in very high esteem, and marvel at some of the energy I see here (wishing I could generate as much as some do).

As Christian said, human beings make mistakes. When we witness tragedy, we have an emotional, protective reaction to stop it happening again; so we start casting about for someone to blame, someone to punish. We need to rise above those emotional responses and learn to think in terms of factfinding and not strike out blindly.

When the press smells blood, they go after the biggest target. The blood they smell is from the wounded horseracing industry. It seems significant to me that a few weeks ago the target was painted on Rick Dutrow, whose horse was one race away from history; and now it is on Steve Asmussen, whose horse is being positioned to become one of an elite few horses to have excelled on multiple continents, under all conditions, on multiple surfaces. Makes me wonder what's really going on.

I don't like to sound like a conspiracy theorist, and I hope I'm not becoming one. But here's a scary thought: Alex Brown, outspoken leader of a grassroots movement to end horse slaughter, works for Steve Asmussen, who suddenly finds himself facing drugging charges, seemingly being denied the opportunity to have additional samples tested that might refute earlier tests. Make of it what you will. I hope I'm waaaaayyyy wrong.

But again, let's try to remember that our names and good reputations are really all we have that matters. No matter how well we do in this life, those are our only legacy after the flowers wither and our heirs have spent our fortunes. I would not want to take away anyone's legacy.

Deirdre

YIPPEE - the Jacksons have another winner - not only did she win - she set a new course record!

My Princess Jess sets new course record in Boiling Springs

Lael Stables’ My Princess Jess took the lead at the top of the stretch and held off a late bid from Much Obliged to win the $150,000 Boiling Springs Stakes (G3) on Saturday at Monmouth Park for new owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson and new trainer Barclay Tagg.

The three-year-old Stormy Atlantic filly completed 1 1/16 miles on firm turf in 1:39.81, topping the previous course record of 1:40.41 set by Giant Wrecker on June 30, 2006.

“I was very impressed, we all were,” Tagg said after the record-setting performance.

Encanto Park led the way for the first six furlongs of the Boiling Springs while jockey Joe Bravo settled My Princess Jess in fifth then fourth. Bravo swung My Princess Jess wide on the turn and she seized command, opening a 3 1/2-length lead in early stretch.

“Barclay Tagg makes me look good,” Bravo said. “This filly was much the best today.”

Much Obliged, who trailed the nine-horse field through a half-mile, mounted a serious run at the winner but came up a neck short at the wire. Much Obliged was 3 1/2½ lengths clear of third-place finisher Forest Trail.

The Boiling Springs was the second consecutive stakes victory and the first graded stakes win for My Princess Jess, who won the Gaviola Stakes on May 8 at Belmont Park for former owner Georgica Stable.

“She looked like she’d be a real nice turf filly, so we purchased her after her last race,” Roy Jackson said. “I just thought she was improving and she ran very well this afternoon.”

My Princess Jess is the first foal to race out of the Pleasant Colony mare Jewell of Jewels. She is from the female family of multiple Grade 1 winner and 1996 champion older female Jewel Princess.

My Princess Jess increased her earnings to $195,420 with three wins and three seconds in six starts. Tagg said she would probably race next during the Saratoga Race Course meet.

THISGOODPLACE Update !

THISGOODPLACE 6: Right'Spirin' has just been posted on the DB under the BARBARO/NICANOR thread.

From the story:

Horses have many words for 'love.' However they mostly just know what it looks, feels, and tastes like. This wind brought to mind all of the imagery and sensation that ever meant “love' to the two big bay colts.

First, they thought about their dams. They felt warm nuzzles and tasted sweet milk in the comfort of their mother's scent and on soft beds of clean straw, where they began to learn of love.
While standing safety at their mothers' sides they experienced people from 'chest level.' Here, in close proximity to human heart-beats they began to understand that people too, have love to give, in the touch of gentle hands, and in the soothing sound of quiet words.

Then, the Young Prince and Prince Brume thought about the joy of running, and of the important work that they had done; of how the people around them became happy with the work. The sense of the imagery was like drinking cool water. They drank in the thoughts of these things and more.

Favored among what Brume remembered as 'love' was the feel of yellow sunshine upon his back; and sound of the voice of that old man. He was always tuned in to the unique frequency in that sound. It rumbled against his skin, in a way that made his throat wish to give voice to words of his own. He could never speak them, try as he might, so he just breathed out a bit harder, and snorted breath in the ol' man's direction, so that he might share a taste of the wind inside of Brume.

The love that the Young Prince remembered came from kind hands, music in the rhythm of words and foot-falls, good work, true hearts, and the gentle lady. The press of a good riders legs were especially comforting to him. He enjoyed being ridden, and carrying the rider into the wind. He also held carrots, kisses, roses, tears, and a basket of grass, in high regard.

Both colts breathed in the thoughts of these things and more. The love in the breath of the wind rushed into them and lifted them higher. They stirred. They shook their manes. Then they stretched their front legs out before them in one huge reaching stride that would take them closer to where the GreatMasse wanted them to go.

...continued on the DB

Sweet dreams, Dear Frens. Before turning in tonight, take a moment to go outside and look up at the beautiful night sky. It will thrill your soul. I will also give the sky an opportunity to gaze down upon you.

Your FOB Fren, O

Debbie thanks for the link. Poor little foal. Those photos are great, aren't they? He'll have a great home until he's big enough to go to a forever home, and so will the mare.

Speaking of foals, sorry that I haven't been back to say thanks to everyone who expressed interest in the saves made here in CO this past week. The main target was an older grey gelding, and sorry to say, his whereabouts are not known at this time, but not for lack of intense effort by many, primarily our "ground" person Natrlhorse and her DH, and the combined effort ot two others in independent rescues. He may turn up yet. We're going to continue to hope. Won't give up until I get confirmation that he's been resold.

THE GREAT NEWS??? two fillies were saved. A beautiful paint filly and a medicine hat foal who has a heart on her left flank. They're both healthy and lovely and they'll have great care and training with Natrlhorse ( who's kinda busy wiht her own new "filly" :)) Anyone who is interested in donating for this past week's efforts can do so by sending $$ to:

http://www.coloradotbrescue.org/

If you'd like to specify the funds are for the youth foundation, please do. The objective is to have horses for the foundation, that is currently in search of funding via grants. If anyone would like to help with that too, please do.

THANK YOU!! Meanwhile, there are horses available for adoption at COTB as well. Ally, a lovely TB/QHX, Peg a gorgeous yearling Paint/TBX, handsome Will, a two year old QH, all who will be wonderful additions to ANY home :)

The poll at the Whoa zone where many of us voted has been manipulated as most pro-slaughter polls are. Here is their report, if you can call a work of fiction a report !

NOTE: in June of 2008, this poll was brought to the attention of the anti-slaughter activists and was being manipulated and used beyond its original intent. Based on the first 6 months of activity BY OVER 500 AVERAGE HORSE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE PERFORMANCE HORSE INDUSTRY results were as follows:

*

69% of reiners polled believe this issue is "constitutional rights" related; 31% believe it is "animal rights" related
*

98% of reiners polled believe horses are personal property
*

78% of reiners polled support the slaughter horse industry; 22% do not

FOB $1-$5 Alive Drive

We have finished drive #25 and started on #26. We have raised over $2500 for rescued horses in the past 10 weeks. Thank-you to everyone for making this drive a success.

The next rescued horse that needs our help is Unbridled Soldier at the Friends of Ferdinand. This boy needs a float. And we are going to raise $100 to help pay for it.

STRATEGY FOR WEEK OF JUNE 30

We have been informed that the only way to get this legislation passed, is by putting pressure on leadership to get it to the floor for a vote. To expedite this effort, this week we will be asking you to focus on the House. We have been advised the best way to get this done is for you to fax the following letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi WITH A CC TO STENY HOYER AND YOUR OWN REPRESENTATIVE

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi Fax 202-225-4188

House Majority Leader- Steny Hoyer Fax 202-225-4300

Dear Madam Speaker:

I am writing to implore you to afford Bill HR503 legislative due process by bringing it to the floor for consideration. It is urgent that we have our chance to get this legislation to a vote in order to save our American horses from the horrors of slaughter for human consumption and from the transportation of our horses to slaughter for human consumption.

It is my understanding that you have the ability to get HR503 released from committee. Please give our horses a chance by getting the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (Bill HR503) on the calendar.

Sincerely,

(your name)

cc: House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer

cc: (your own representative)'

Remember, WE ARE BARBAROS VOICE..Let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do.

ALL,
Cloud's Wild Herd
THE DEADLINE FOR CLOUD AND HIS HERD/FAMILY IS 7/11/08
SLATED TO BE "REMOVED" (DESTROYED) BY
THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR'S
BUREAU OF LAND MANGEMENT
Please write!
Please forward and ask everyone to do the same. We must stop this atrocity.
Help fight to preserve Clouds herd in the Pryor Mountains . The wild horses need your help.
The BLM has issued the Draft Herd Management Area Plan (HMAP) and the Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) calling for a drastic population reduction that would take the herd down to an unsustainable level. The plan calls for just 90-120 adult horses one year and older to remain in their homeland.
The HMAP, if adopted, will dictate the management of the Pryor Mountain Wild Horses for a minimum of 5-10 years. In reality, this current plan could be in effect for 20 years or more (the last HMAP amendment was signed in 1992). By that time the Pryor horses as we know them will be just a memory.
Removals of wild horses will concentrate on these groups in rank order:

(See next post)

Posted by: Barb AZ, Chunky and Punky at June 30, 2008 2:11 AM

1. Wild horses of any age that dont look Spanish.
2. Wild horses that are no longer reproducing that have already contributed to the gene pool by successfully reproducing. Ironically, infertility drugs continue to be administered to older mares to keep them from reproducing. The BLM reason given for infertility application on these mares was to increase their life span. Now, BLM is saying there are too many old horses and they must go. (Click here for a photo gallery of some of the wonderful older horses falling in this category.)
3. Wild horses under five years old.
4. Wild horses older than 11 years. (Cloud and Velvet and most of the band stallions and lead mares fall in this category.)
5. Horses between 5-10 years of age.

This list includes every wild horse currently living on the Pryors. All are potential targets for removal.

The BLM removals disregard the social structure and stability of the families on the mountain. Any horse could be removed regardless of the key roles they play as band stallions or lead mares. Most of these leaders have reproduced and are over 10 years of age, making them prime targets for removal.

Why such a drastic plan? BLM claims that portions of the range are in a declining condition. They rely on two studies for this claim: the NRCS study conducted 2001-2002 during the worst drought in many decades; and a BLM assessment conducted in 2007. However, no raw data has been made available from the 2007 assessment to the public. And so, the public must take BLM conclusions at face value with no proof of current declining range conditions.

It is hard to believe the BLM assessment considering the current conditions in Southern Montana and Northern Wyoming . I have never seen it greener. Long time local residents tell us that it has not looked as beautiful in decades. Many told us they have never seen the range looking this great. (click here for key talking points in your letter to BLM.)

Now is the time to unite and speak out loud and clear on behalf of these beautiful animals and their spectacular homeland. We will not allow the BLM to ravage the herd as they have others in the West. Please tell all your friends to help us. Send this to your address book. Not just horse fans or Cloud fans but all people who value freedom and beauty should be concerned with this cruel and destructive plan.

PS: Cloud has a new grandson who looks very much like him and we named him Clouds Image- he is a doll. Will he live in freedom? Perhaps, because of his unique color, but who knows? There are 20 other darling foals atop the mountain, including Firestorms new filly and Bolders first foal (both Cloud grand-daughters) . Flint also has a beautiful three-year-old grulla mare, Feldspar.

Hiya, FsOB! Wow, I am writing even later than usual for a Sunday evening. What a great stand Suffolk Downs is taking!

Wishing you "ACN". Here's to a safe and productive new week for us all. Peace, RMH

#### To Jonna: I hope that you are feeling better today. Thank you for your kind thoughts. Frankly, I can't get those two horses who broke down at Churchill out of my head. I have to try to keep pushing the visuals aside, it was really awful. Thank you for caring.
To Kathy: May Blondwyn's dog Magic have a better week. I hate to think of a doggie with cancer.
Bless Joe Shelton and his wife for the work that they do! How could anyone beat a filly for coming in last? Here's to the Sheltons' tenacity!
To Kate: Glad that Beau is back home with you again.
To Otherlyn: Every installment of The Young Prince is an incredible work of art. Many thanks!
Has anyone heard fron Lynne Brown lately? I hope that she is doing well. ####

There is no such thing as "declining range conditions" due to wild horses. No such thing at all!!!!!!!!! They must think we are idiots.

The "range" is heavily desired now by oil and gas exploration. This means fencing, and locked gates. Leasing monies will be paid.

Wild horses cannot pay a lease.

What's left of available "range" is desirable for cattle. A per head fee is paid.

Wild horses cannot pay a per head fee.

Over grazing is NOT being done by the horses.

Once again, as we've heard about other issues, it's the horse's fault.

Fight for the wild horses. This is a filthy lie. Let's show these people we are not the idiots they think we are. This just gets my nickers in a twist.

Nickers in a twist? LOL

#### Barb, Sorry for the outburst. But I have seen these ranges first hand. They are not in declining conditions. I had the honor of feeding a wild horse a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup while the others looked on. They were all healthy and happy. This was in Wyola, MT. There are also 3 herds just north of here in southern Colorado. This winter we had so much snow that collections were started to buy feed for these horses. They did fine, although a couple of horses were victims of trucks and cars, as they came down to the highways looking for food. Once they were being fed, this stopped.

Also, some of these horses are stolen by BLM employees and hidden away for such a time that they can be sold for slaughter. This is fact, and it happens right here in my neighborhood.

I can't stand the lying.
