    Barbaro Updates: 620

    updates are now here.

Update 3676: My previous employer, Clear Admit, wrote this nice update on me: Clear Admit Staff Update: Alex Brown Works to Combat Horse Slaughter.

Update 3675: This is a fantastic development: Suffolk Downs begins zero-tolerance slaughter policy, excerpt:

Elliott said the plan has the complete backing of Richard Fields, the real estate and casino developer who purchased a controlling interest in Suffolk Downs last year.

"If a horse goes from here to the slaughterhouse, that's completely unacceptable," Elliott said. "That trainer won't be here. I don't think that's anybody we'd want to have around. Mr. Fields is a strong believer in retirement idea. He's a big backer of it. The two are incompatible."

Update 3674: The Hollywood Gold Cup loses the favorite: Heatseeker out of Gold Cup.

Prominent owner Maggi Moss will defend Steve Asmussen: Owner Moss to Defend Trainer Asmussen.

Update 3673: Another early start here at Woodbine (5 am track opening) and early finish. I had seven sets, and all went nicely. Easy gallops. Woodbine is very busy racing over the next few days but we are oddly light on runners. I guess its nice to take a little break. A couple of people congratulated me on the Bloodhorse Q and A yesterday, which was nice. Nice to know that it has been read a little bit. Jen, who has supported this work, and also happens to run a great blog on Canadian racing highlighted the Q and A in her entry today: ACROSS THE LAND. Also noted on Jen's blog is the unusual fundraiser Woodbine put on for LongRun last week in association with the Queen's Plate. Very creative.

Update 3672: The marquee race this weekend is the Hollywood Gold Cup. We have Student Council in the race, which also features Perfect Drift and Tiago: Heatseeker, Tiago rematch highlights Hollywood Gold Cup.

The hearing is set: Date Set for Hearing in Asmussen Case.

    Please keep calling and writing.

For Canadians: Canadian Horse Defense Coalition Call to Action.

Hiya, FsOB! Is it possible that I can be first or second today on what appears to be a hazy morning here on the banks of the Thames? Wishing each of you a very productive Friday and a safe weekend! Peace, RMH

    #### To Renee: Yes, I am sure that my hair must've flown all around from that big "whoosh". Loved that horse!
To Jonna: I hope that you felt better and got some sleep last PM. ####

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George, Belle, KeyKey and the rest of the gang of glorious equines.

    For them:

    MORNING POST/SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:

    STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY JUNE 27

Both the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), have the power to bring the bill up for consideration in their respective chambers, therefore it is vital that as many people as possible, both at the grassroots level and internally within Congress, insist that the House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader do everything in their power to afford the bills legislative due process and bring them immediately to the floor for a vote.

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)
    DC Phone: 202-225-4965 Fax:202-225-4188
    Email: sf.nancy@mail.house.gov

Senate Majority Leader - Harry Reid (D-NV)
    DC Phone: 202-224-3542 Fax:202-224-7327
    Email: http://reid.senate.gov/contact/index.cfm

It is our understanding that more co sponsors would certainly facilitate our efforts with Speaker of the House Pelosi and draw the much needed attention to this legislation. For this reason, we will be posting the names of Representatives that we will be targeting.

However, this FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY!! The day for you to go back over your lists and call those you may have missed. Or to give another call to someone that you think is close and just needs that extra “push” to come join us!

Please continue to gather information from your calls and pass that information on to us via email through the DB.

Finally, please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter when making your calls and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

We are BARBARO’S VOICE……Let it be heard!!

Nala is finally home this morning, the surgery went well but she had a horrible time after she woke up, did not handle the anesthesia well. She had everyone very scared for hours, I was with her until late last night until they got everything under control. She is comfortable, having trouble walking but is eating. We all agreed, no matter what no more surgery for her. They removed the latest cancer and they will try a new medicine for her hip dysplasia and ACL tear and put her back on her regular medicine that kept the cancer gone for 1 1/2 years. She is very happy to be home - thanks to Joan, Robyn and everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

Margie - great to hear your persistence paid off in swaying the pro-slaughter to our side.

Praying for all horses running today and tomorrow to be safe, too many accidents at Hollywood, even TVG is embarrassed.

God send strength to Barb and Nala and wisdom to her Vets. Those anesthesia reactions can be terrifying.
Even with the precautions we take with the greyhounds--they are SUPER sensitive to anesthesia, sometimes even the gases currently in use. I have more than once laid across a freaking out, screaming greyhound, pulled out of the crate so they don't break a leg and I am yelling for the Vets for help.

So I send you you thoughts of healing and peace. and Nala is eating! That's the best/when they won't eat. that's the Big Scare for me...xxoo: j

June 27 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk)

Discouragement knows exactly where our weaknesses are. Like a jackal it sniffs out the scent that fear creates and sets about a plan of destruction. It is a tool of the enemy and should be squashed at its very beginning.

When the spirit is like a deflated balloon, discouragement moves in swiftly. Be watchful and leave no opening, no sign of weakness. Take no offers to be underhanded--the pay is fraudulent, and defeat follows. Rise up and speak the word that you will not tolerate discouragement. Invite power and hope and eagerness--and see trouble dissolve.

A man ought to desire that which is genuine instead of that which is artificial.

InBev to go hostile as Anheuser rejects bid
By Jonathan Birchall in New York

    Published: June 26 2008 22:05 | Last updated: June 27 2008 00:59

InBev, the world’s largest brewer, said on Thursday it would launch a hostile bid for Anheuser-Busch as its US rival rejected its $46bn bid as “financially inadequate”.

In court documents filed in the Court of Chancery in Delaware, InBev said it was preparing to launch a proxy battle seeking the removal of Anheuser’s entire board, citing “delays and apparent plans to attempt to block the acquisition”.

    EDITOR’S CHOICE

August Busch IV, Anheuser’s chief executive, suggested in a letter to Carlos Brito, InBev’s chief executive, that the Belgian-Brazilian group was seeking to take advantage of the low level of the dollar and subdued US stock markets with an offer that undervalued Anheuser’s earnings potential.

While InBev said it still wanted a “constructive dialogue” over its $65-a-share offer, the exchange set the stage for a high-profile international battle for control of Anheuser, which controls almost half of the US beer market.

The battle for control of the maker of Budweiser and Michelob beers will unfold during a presidential election campaign in which free trade and foreign investment in the US is likely to be a significant theme.

InBev’s court filing said that it had been told by Mr Busch before launching the bid that he was opposed to any offer, and that Anheuser was “not for sale”. Mr Busch, according to InBev, also said he and his board were committed to the company’s independence.

In its letter to InBev, Mr Busch said Anheuser had developed plans to increase targeted savings to more than $1bn by 2010, building on an existing programme aimed at cutting an initial $400m in costs. The brewer is to give further details of its cost savings and plans “for accelerated earnings growth” to investors today.

InBev, meanwhile, is asking the court for a declaratory ruling that would confirm the shareholders’ right to remove all 13 of Anheuser’s board members, without giving cause.

The brewer is asking for clarification of the legal status of five of the directors appointed in 2006, before changes were made that allow the removal of board directors by written consent.

John Coffee, a professor of corporate law at Columbia University, said the move to request the ruling from the Delaware courts was highly unusual, and characterised the filing as “an initial opening tactic” by InBev’s legal team.

    Good Morning Gang.

Prayers today for Barb M. and Nala, and Kate and Beau. And for everyone here in need, 2 leggeds and 4 leggeds.

I was in tears at the sight of Appeal To The City's basket. So many big hearts here.

Another little story from the pro slaughter converts, continuation from yesterday. The phone call I got yesterday had to do with what they saw on their ceiling when they went to bed on Wednesday night, (after the conversion). They have a light colored wood planking on the ceilings. As they laid in bed, they noticed in the almost darkness, the image in the wood of a golden palomino with wings!!! 30 years ago they had a therapeutic riding program that was started with a golden palomino. In their current barn, they have a young golden palomino. She is small, and now they are looking upon all of this as divinity. A sign to do good. They want me to come ASAP to visit their ceiling. They are very excited.

I guess money, whether too much or too little, or the desire to get more, shape shifts us at times, gets us off track.

Speaking of money, we won $2.00 in a scatch off game last night!!

Best wishes for all racers this week end, Tiago and everyone.

    888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

Friday, June 27th... Up early, and you can tell how early because the radio is solid music. No commercials. I must hustle to feed our 109 horses. And then it is off to a job at another ranch, earning the big bucks, a mask over my face because of thick smoke. Often, even on clear sunny days, I have been told to wear a mask. Ha Ha. Later this morning I must rush back and say goodbye to Justin, who leaves us for his new home in Reno. Justin is a quarter horse, a big white blaze, and a fractured knee. He will spend the rest of his life enjoying room service. The Sunday comics. Brunch which includes carrot cake.

So because this is a day on the run, new pictures will not appear below. Sorry. It takes 15-20 minutes to load each picture. You are certainly not missing much. Mostly smoke. Horses crowded together, looking like January on a cold foggy day.

Besides Justin finding a new home, so too has Piper, a little filly purchased at an auction this spring. Piper leaves us tomorrow. The black young filly Tara Lago also has a brand new home, and we are awaiting word on transportation arrangements.

Yesterday from a feed lot in Vallejo came a dark thoroughbred gelding. He is skinny, with an old broken pastern. His new name is Uncle Scott. There is a racing tattoo which says Uncle Scott is 9 years old.

A special hello to Allie of Brentwood, and it was great to meet you yesterday.

A special Thank You to Clark & Denise, happy new owners of two ranch horses who needed a new home fast. Clark & Denise live in the Sacramento area, and they have a two week vacation in August. Hawaii was on their mind. So too was Mexico, with maybe a weekend in Las Vegas. But Clark & Denise have decided to stay home this year and use their vacation funds to help horses who need help. How cool is that? The two ranch horses came to Clark & Denise last night, and a big Thank You to Ryan Andrews for providing transportation.

And a special Thank You to Maddie who also lives in the Sacramento area. Maddie is 16, and her best friend is Kara. Maddie came to me yesterday and said here is $350.00 to rescue a horse from a horse killer. $300.00 from Maddie, the other $50.00 from Kara. On the phone with horse killer Brent Sanchez, and he has an off the track gelding with a blown tendon. Total cost with shipping comes to $550.00. So now we have a 3 way partnership. Tbfriends, Maddie and Kara. Maddie says lets call him Timbers, after her old dog who passed away. Well okay then. Timbers comes to us on Saturday.

Lots of readers of this website who live in Massachusetts. What a time they are having. The Boston Red Sox win the World Series. The Patriots go to the Super Bowl. And recently The Boston Celtics won the NBA championship.

In the mail on Wednesday from Eden Jones came two hats for me. A Red Sox hat and a Celtics hat. And then in the mail yesterday from Steve & Linda Rei, I received a Boston Celtic championship t-shirt.

Love that city of Boston. What nice people. Thank you Eden, and Thank you Steve & Linda. Looks like The Red Sox might do all over again this year.

And now it is time to put on my Red Sox cap and Celtic shirt and begin a busy Friday. Hot coffee is from Peets, and microwave pancakes were made by Sunnyside. Almost a week now since we have seen the sun. Later today we could be 93 degrees.

    Joe

Top Left: Smoke is so bad here. We cannot see hills just a few miles away.

Horses are smokey and yucky. 34 horses yesterday received cold water baths, including:

    Top Right: Tapatio

    Bottom Left: Set The Course

Bottom Right: Salvino. We call him Sal. Sal came from the track with just one eye, and he earned decent money. Sal has become a big pet.

CA is a scary place, imho....safety and peace to all. And lots of prayers for our beloved TBs in the hands of people who may or may not care a fig for their welfare and futures...damn.

I am so proud to be in the House that Barbaro Built with you. Your words yesterday were perfect. How did you do that? I am grateful for you here. Your Granny would be proud. All of us are...I hope she knows you have a zillion FoB fanbase.

National Farriers Week July 8-14 -

Let's use it to enlist more footsoldiers (hoofsoldiers???) in our anti-HS campaign!

On page 72 of the July 2008 issue of Practical Horseman, under the header "5 Things to Do in JULY," I found this listed as numero uno:

"Thank your farrier for all his or her hard work during National Farriers Week, July 8-14. Download a certificate of appreciation at www.americanfarriers.com/ff/certif. (A batch of cookies probably wouldnt hurt, either!)"

I immediately called my old farrier (no contact since March 07 when Blackie died), had a nice chat with him and his wife, glad we're all still vertical, wished him a happy National Farriers Week coming up (he knew about it, btw, he's a member of that group) - and got his wife's email address and sent out the AAHS link.

And that led me to present, for your consideration, a new initiative I dreamed up; hope others will follow, as it seems so fitting and reasonable.

COMMEND AND ENLIST YOUR FARRIER TODAY!

Farriers should support the slaughter/export ban - after all, dead horses do not need hoof care, haha. Seriously - I haven't done a poll, but it just makes sense, wouldn't you think?

SO - I propose that EVERY FOB WHO HAS A HORSE AND USES A FARRIER download that certificate and present it to your farrier, ALONG WITH A SPIEL ABOUT FIGHTING HS and getting the bills passed - what do you think?

What's more - I intend to assign all rights to my "Waitin' for the Blacksmith Blues" to the Nat'l Ass'n IF they come out as a group in favor of the federal legislation. Am gonna contact their powers that be re this. But regardless whether the org gets on the antiHS bandwagon, I think we may well succeed in enlisting lots of individual farriers (and their friends and families) to our cause by getting those Certs of Appreciation off to our respective farriers and then hitting them with the Anti-HS spiel at the same time....

FROM MY ANECDOTAGE - After getting my mind on farriers, I did a lot of reminiscing about my previous farrier, Ed Ehrhardt Jr. (RIP), and can't begin to tell you what he meant to me - he was recommended to me by my vet when my Sonny's front leg tendons were contracting, as the best he knew to do orthopedic farrier work in conjunction with xrays and vet recs, letting the hoof grow longer on the contracting leg, prefatory to then-experimental surgery (it worked; Sonny had a few more good pasture years); not only did Ed steer me to T Bar J when I needed to move further from the City in the late 70s, he's the one who hooked me up with the IL owner/trainer who was looking to give away a broken-legged OTTB and that's how I wound up with Washington Leader (George) in the late 80s; and when Blackie couldn't stand on her bad front leg to let him work on the good one a few years ago, that man actually laid down on the cement floor in the aisle next to her and managed to trim that hoof without her picking it up.(!) This farrier did horse transport too. During one of the trips to the horspital for Sonny's surgeries (one front leg at a time) we had a flat tire on a killer hot day, and I'll never forget how he jacked that trailer up although my horse (of course) was situated right over the flat. In his last years he (the farrier, not the horse, haha) had an artificial leg (result of diabetes) but still kept working as long as he could. An unforgettable character, for sure. (btw he was very big and round and in many ways resembled Hoss from Bonanza.)

ANYWAY - hope y'all who have a farrier, will download that Certificate and hustle off to enlist your farrier in our campaign!

EXTRA FRI June 27 NBFA SPECIAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List NOW posted below amd at this DB Thread:

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=25756.1

NOTE - only THREE targets today - these are AFRO-AMERICAN LEGISLATORS and we want to send them the AWI/NBFA Press Release dated 6/17/08; updated version showing add'l cosponsor since PR was issued avail here: DB message 25386.1

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their 2008 WHITE PAPER are at the DB thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

    800-828-0498

    800-828-1887

    800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

    1. Let [the legislators] know that all three former horse slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently; and Cavel (Dekalb IL) lost its appeal and the US Sup Ct just refused further review. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

    2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

    3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

    4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

    5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

    Rhetorial Question Du Jour:
ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Friday 6/27/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Friday 6/27 NBFA SPECIAL TARGET LIST -

    All are African American Representatives-

HS History: Jones and Clyburn cosponsored 503 in the 109th Congress, and all three voted YES on that bill. Jones and Davis voted YES on 249 while Clyburn did not vote (NV) on it. (indicated below) (Y = Yes; NV = Not Voting; CS = Cosponsor)

IMO - THANK those who voted YES on HR 249 - but remind them that 249 only applies to WILD equines and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to end export.

Thank them all for having voted YES on HR 503; use their prior support of the slaughter ban bill when urging them to cosponsor now. "DO THE RIGHT THING AGAIN - support the slaughter/export ban - but this time, cosponsor...."

Thank the former cosponsors - but "WHY NOT NOW?!?!?!"

    OHIO
    Rep. Stephanie T. Jones (Y 249; CS & Y 503)

IF you're done with today's ABR/AAHS Instructions & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to post 2 of the above Thread for a good alternate target list of Senators compiled by AWI/SAPL.

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! Go get 'em.

    Disconnected do-gooders

Written by Editor, on 26-06-2008 09:12

    By: Sheri Monk
I don’t own a horse. I’ve never owned a horse and I probably will never have the opportunity to.

Of course, I never owned cows before and I have a couple of those now.
Some of you may have caught a CBC news program recently about the horse slaughter at a plant in Saskatchewan.
The U.S. shut down the horse slaughter industry last year after pressure from animal rights activists.
As a result, canner horses are coming by the truckload to Canada for slaughter.
High feed prices have made keeping horses even more expensive and horse owners in the U.S. have started turning them loose in the middle of the night just to be rid of them.
I haven’t watched the CBC program and it may be that there was room for improvement with regards to humane treatment at the plant.
If so, by all means, animals ought not to suffer before slaughter.
It’s these do-gooders that irritate me. These people with no common sense and no real life experience.
Their compassion is based more off a relationship with a stuffed teddy bear than anything with real teeth, hooves and brains.
Canner horses are usually sold for meat overseas to Asia and Europe. The idea of eating horse doesn’t really turn my crank, but I can’t fault anyone else for it.
These horses are canners for a reason. The idea of peacefully grazing horses at a relaxing retirement home until they gently die of old age may be romantic, but who is going to pay for it? The vegetarian activists? I doubt it.
The bottom line is we use animals for labour, for food, for entertainment and occasionally, for comfort.
Animals are disposable. If they were valued as humans are, we wouldn’t eat them, plain and simple.
Yet, despite the many uses we have for animals such as food and clothing, all critters deserve respect, dignity and humane treatment throughout their lives, right up until they are slaughtered and eaten.
Someone could just as easily record footage from any cattle slaughterhouse anywhere in the world and create the same emotional impact as the horse footage did on the CBC program.
If you focused in on the eye of a cow being led to the killing floor, or the nurturing between cow and calf, you’d have to be a sociopath not to connect in some way to the animal.
Horses, dogs, cats, cows–they all feel pain and taste fear because that is the nature of life and death.
For gazelles on the plains of Africa before being taken by a pride of lions, fear is the instinct that drives them to run.
To pretend any animal is so stupid they can’t tell when they’re being hunted or hurt only does the livestock sector harm because it is not the truth.
It is because animals suffer that we treat them well, no matter what their end use. We treat even the animals we will eat with respect because it’s the right thing to do.
That they feel pain and fear doesn’t change that we were built with teeth for the purpose of eating meat.
Knowing an animal was slaughtered so I can eat steak doesn’t kill my appetite.
Abandoned animals dying of starvation and disease because do-gooders have changed the way the U.S. works does.
The problem lies in a massive disconnect between reality and context. Most Americans eat more animals at McDonalds in a year than a Third World citizen will eat in a lifetime.
Yet, they buckle to artificial emotions planted by manipulative people so disconnected, they harm the animals they try to save.
In some countries, dogs and cats are still eaten. I don’t crave dog meat, but realistically, provided the dog is kept and killed humanely I can’t oppose it on any moral grounds.
American canner horses are sent for long, exhaustive journeys to Mexico and Canada for slaughter. Many arrive weak or dead from the stress. Downer horses can’t be killed for food either, so these horses are thrown on the dead pile, wasted and spent.
Is that what these animal rights activists want?
Should we let every animal roam free and live full lives in a time when the world is crying out over food shortages and the grazing grass gets drier every year?
This is not a perfect world. We can’t force it to be, no matter how well-intentioned we are. The sooner these activists realize this, the better off those horses will be.
Life is imperfect and death is unfair. We are defined by what falls in the middle.

Thought I'd share this with you:

    Dear Karen:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for the establishment of a National Racing Commission in the wake of the Eight Belles tragedy at the Kentucky Derby. I appreciate you taking the time to express your views on this important issue.

As you may know, the filly Eight Belles tragically broke down at last month’s Kentucky Derby and had to be euthanized. Following these catastrophic events, questions that have been dogging the racing industry for years, regarding breeding, medication, synthetic surfaces versus dirt, began to resurface. After Eight Belles’ break down, the Jockey Club created a national panel to examine safety, and the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority did the same on the state level.

Among the topics being reviewed are track surfaces, medication (particularly steroids), the use of the whip by riders, and whether thoroughbreds are becoming less durable because they're being bred to emphasize speed rather than stamina early in their careers. Furthermore, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection has called for answers to these questions and will be holding hearings in June.

Please know that I will be closely monitoring the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection hearings as well as the findings of the Jockey Club and Kentucky Horse Racing Authority investigations. While horse racing is part of our heritage and national fabric, we must ensure that it is undertaken in a safe and responsible manner.

Again, thank you for writing me. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me in the future.

    Sincerely,

    Jon C. Porter
    Member of Congress

    Gotta love this man!

    ## To clarify - and give credit where it is due ... the "Must See" that Barb blue-inked above ...... was sent to me by our hard-working, FsOB, Lenny .....

The Budweiser Clydesdales are fantastic. They come, each year, to Apache Junction, Az for our annual "Lost Dutchman Days" ....... a 3 day event. They "camp" nearby ... and are available for visiting. A few years ago I went to see them - the day after their 3 day participation, during which they are IN parade and put on a fantastic demo at he rodeo grounds.

They are required to have a certain amount of no travel/no work days .... and this was the day !
Hardly anyone else there ..... the crew was getting them ready to exercise. One guy literally "vaulted" onto the back of a gentle giant - bareback - and took 3 others along .....
"ponying them" ..... by holding only their lead lines ............ (YUP folks, that's 4 !!) ........ and they all went riding in the desert ....... for at least 45 minutes. I waited until they came back .... and fortunately had my camera with me. I could hardly believe it !!
A real HIGH point for me ........

    reposting

(Also posting this info at the DB both under "Anti-Slaughter US" and "General - Horse Related" - and a hotlink to download the certificate of appreciation will be there.)

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH

Hope Peace Love Music & RESPECT - CJ the craziest catlady (Blackie's Mother Forever & Shona's Aunt) in Hammond IN, f/k/a CJ of T Bar J (Elgin IL)

    ########
btw - Alex or anyone - is this kind of info welcome at Tim Wooley's Board? There may be lots of people who read there but not here, who use farriers . . .

    AZ news:

Today is the last day for SB 1405, the AZ ban on horse tripping, to have the final read to pass. They are asking for all in AZ to call. Fingers and hooves crossed.

###Barb, the article about the "disconnected" will not accept my comment. It states that my comment has nothing to do with the story and will not be accepted.?????? I think they are getting deluged, and the comments are shut down.

Yippee - Our Mims Retirement Haven (the one that specializes in the old TB mares) has received a grant from Thoroughbred Charities of America.

    Details here:

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=17855.1671

Wanted to mention this, that was just posted today, because of what Alex said on Talking Horses about how to find a worthy TB rescue to support - (in essence) that those assisted by TCA are good ones for sure.

I've been a fan of Jeanne and Our Mims Retirement Haven ever since the thread was first posted, with stories and pics of the old mares. Just wanted y'all to know that OMRH is one of the rescues selected by TCA as worthy of assistance.

    Dear FOBS,

As you know Animals' Angels are the ones out there EXPOSING the cruelties and filing reports with officials so the criminals are fined and EXPOSED.

They also make sure the reports are provided to our legislators and that is so important to the anti horse slaughter legislation.

I just learned that because of Animals' Angels persistence the poor horses that are in those Texas pens awaiting their grisly and horrifying death they at least now have CLEAN WATER to drink and HAY to eat. So even though the horses are doomed for a barbaric death they at least have food and water while they stand in those pens in the awful triple digit heat.

Animals' Angels are planning another extensive investigation that will surely expose more cruelty and abuse to our equines headed to slaughter. This investigation will be quite expensive with the cost of EVERYTHING these days and could use some help. We are trying to raise $2,100. by July 15th. We are now down to $1,620. If everyone forwards this message to their contacts this amount shouldn't be that hard to raise.

Animals' Angels are the only organization that is out there literally putting their life on the line to help the horses. If you can afford to help them help the horses it is much appreciated.

Remember that no amount is too small and it ALL adds up :)

Thank you to everyone that has already provided financial support to these investigations.

If you go to Donate for EXPOSURE
    there is a paypal button.

Mark the donation for Horse Slaughter Investigation USA

Please send checks or money orders to:

Animals' Angels USA, PO BOX 1056, Westminster, MD 21158

They need OUR help to keep exposing the realities of what is going on!

    Thank you!
