Barbaro Updates: 588

updates are now here.

Update 3488: Latest entry on The Rail:

Rick Dutrow Sizes Up Casino Drive.

Update 3487: A bit of a damp morning this morning at Woodbine, but not too bad. We had eight sets, two of mine went to the gate after the break. It was a good morning's work and for the most part my horses went nicely. There was some chatter this morning about Big Brown's overwhelming Preakness win. Some chatter about his stud contract and the sad reality of racing when its not economical to run our best horses. To do that, you do it for the Sport, its not a business decision.

Update 3486: Media coverage of a very impressive Preakness win by Big Brown:

Big Brown untouchable in Preakness
Big Brown Crushes Preakness Rivals
Big Brown one step closer to Triple Crown after Preakness romp
Big Brown Rules Preakness

Update 3485: Wow. That was impressive. Big Brown dominated what was likely a weak field. But dominated. The Belmont will be a short field, but with Casino Drive potentially an interesting horse race. Big Brown has done nothing but win, and win convincingly. The Triple Crown may be won this year.

Update 3484: Steve Klesaris trained Roman Ruler eaked out a win in the Barbaro Stakes this afternoon at Pimlico: Barbaro Stakes Ruled by Roman Emperor.

This morning the Preakness horses completed their final preparations, which included a short work for Big Brown: Final Preparations for the Preakness.

We had a winner in the first this afternoon at Woodbine. I was over there helping school the two horses in the paddock during the second race. Now returning to Woodbine to see our horse run in the seventh, and then watch the Preakness!

Update 3483: As part of ESPNs coverage of the Preakness this afternoon, they will be airing a roundtable discussion on safety issues, 4 pm this afternoon.

Update 3482: A little wet this morning at Woodbine, but not too bad. Its still not too warm yet however. We had eight sets. Sadly the main track was closed at one point, I believe a horse broke down. We ventured over to the training track (dirt track) while the main track was closed. The rest of the morning went with too much trouble although I did see a loose horse gallop by our barn. No one seemed too worried about trying to catch it! We have a couple of runners this afternoon, and will also be schooling a couple in the paddock during the second race so I will have a little busy afternoon before settling in to watch the Preakness.

Update 3481: Steve Haskin's assessment of the Preakness: Haskin's Preakness Analysis: Vroom!

Friday's activities of the Preakness contenders: Final Preakness Preparations.

New York Times has an excellent article this morning on the fate of racehorses after they have finished running: Saving Horses One at a Time.

Hay, FOB's!

I'm first???? Again???

###
Today, for me, is a day of prayers...for the Brennans, for all horses racing today, but especially for those in the Preakness. May all run with the wind and come home safely. For those who have asked...I'm gonna set up a continuous Reiki flow all day today...for the horses, for those in need of comfort.

The energies of this present time are transformational - in a HUGE way. Its having people feel very "off center" - me included. We are all releasing old ways of thinking, old ways of living, old ways of feeling.

Its gonna be OK...one way or another, its gonna be OK.

I love you all.

Alex,

Thank your for posting the NY times article- excellent article. I hope many people read this article and decide enough is enough!!

May all the horses run safety today!! We love all of them and want them to live long and healthy lives.

Thinking of Erin and her family!!!

Hiya, FsOB! Why can't the spammers leave this site alone, especially today? Wendy & Alex, you may wish to remove the entry just prior to that of Padme.

Alex, what a great article from the New York Times! That's the sort of coverage that is needed about the issue of responsible ownership of TBs.

May each of the horses at Pimlico today stay safe. Big Brown is still my pick, although I was very disturbed to read of his trainer's penchant for steroids for TBs. Wishing each of you peace today, dear FsOB!

#### And may Erin Brennnan and her family have a golden Saturday! ####

Padme: YES! That feeling of being disconnected to everything. I think--as do you--that it will pass, we will get Erin's situation under our hearts, and just keep sending prayer to that amazing little girl. And yes, per my friend who is a pediatric oncologist, children are almost without exception, always the first to know their fate. She had one little patient take her aside and ask her not to tell her mother the news. She told Sharon, "She's not ready to hear that yet."

Out of the mouths of babes...closer to God than us, IMHO, they are more connected to the universe and its out comes.

And also> as my brother-in-law will tell me when I get nuts, "It's all good."

We have to hang on to that and be as tough as is required by the moment, and then move on the next thing.

Other wise--at least in my case, paralysis sets in, and I can't be of use to anyone.

Love The Barbaro Nation. I cannot believe we've been striving for two years now, some longer than that. Safe rides for all at Pimlico today. I'll be watching the replay if all are intact at the end of this race...

And, it's off to the Mall of Wretched Excess...Outreach. Two new adopters met their cat-approved dogs last night. They were SO excited. I love it.

And later tonight, three new fosters arrive...oy.
NO SLEEPING FOR YEWWWWWWW , JONNA!

And one more thing, there stand Jerri in the hint of dawn, still alone in her enclosure.
As Lucy would say, MAYBE TODAY?!

Be well, all my FoBs, Courage. J

###Mixed emotions today, and for all the obvious (and similar reasons) as other posters here. Prayers for the runners today--everywhere--and I am getting my GOOD feelings from reading about the horses that are "the lucky ones."

###I live not far from Tranquility Farm (well, 75 miles one way, which is like a small fortune in gasoline these days, ack) but have never contacted them to visit. I know I would be in tears the entire time, tears of joy for "the lucky ones."

###Have a wonderful day, everyone. I'm wondering how much I can get done with fingers crossed for all runners.

###Prayers to all in need, especially Erin and her family, too.

I am posting Mary S prayer of protection for all, horses and people alike. We are all facing struggles, we all need compassion, love and healing.

Lord, Hear Our Prayer

The Light of God surrounds you
The Love of God enfolds you
The Power of God Protects you
The Presence of God watches over you
Wherever you are , God IS.

For the love of who you are
For the love of your spirit...

For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us…” Romans 8:38, 39

Last night I thought of two things that could make horseracing a lot safer. Remember we're in it for the horses.

The first is less restrictions on breeding. "Inferior" breeding does not neccessarily mean an inferior horse. Man O' War wasn't accepted into Jockey Club because of breeding, and look how he turned out. If horses were accepted that had small traces of other breeds, it might actually help reverse the inbreeding and the breeding for speed and not soundness. Thoroughbreds with the toughness of an Arabian or a Quarter Horse aren't as likely to break down as a horse inbred five times to Native Dancer.

The second idea is less effective whips. If horses are running for themselves as opposed to the whip, they're much less likely to run themselves to death. And we can see which horses truly have heart - isn't that what really counts?

Please respond- I really want to see what you guys think.

from Harriette in KY today: most appropriate

It is useless to put a warped container inside a good one in hopes of straightening it. It only spoils the good one. The stuff they are made of has to be workable if either is to be saved. We can be affected, even encouraged by outside influences, but real change is from the inside. It is possible to wait a long time for a situation to change so that we can change. It won't happen. We have to change first--our thoughts, our attitudes, and very often, our reasons. If we are ever to be totally free of us tso a se di, the Cherokke expression for miserable or unhappy circumstances, we will have to remold our own human spirit to the will of the Great Spirit. It is the only help that is not based on money or dependency on someone else who is equally weak.

Great Spirit, once more behold me on earth and learn to hear my feeble voice.

reposting excerpt

Came here to crosspost something I just read and responded to at the HAHS Group site - IMO this is an important thing to do.

HBO WANTS TO HEAR FROM US

crossposting excerpt from post at HAHS site

... just got off the phone with an HBO representative. I called to let them know how greatful we are for their interest in this subject
of horse slaughter and to let them know how important it is to get more exposure. They ENCOURAGE & WELCOME our calls! If we can convince
HBO that there is enough public interest (and outrage) over the recent HBO airing exposing the vicious cycle these horses are caught up in and there most common tragic ends,.....maybe they might want to explore the issue a little more, maybe even do a documentary? We should all BOMBARD HBO SPORTS requesting further information and exposure on the subject. Tell them how important you think it is that this information be widely publicised because America NEEDS TO KNOW!

Here is a link to their website;

http://www.hbo.com/docs/

And here is the telephone number of HBO's Customer Affairs Dept., where you can call them Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm ET;

(212) 512 - 1208

I have spoken to the HBO reps at this number and they have already received some calls asking for more exposure on this subject, and the good news is that HBO is ENCOURAGING & WELCOMING our calls so lets get to it and let them know you think this subject needs more exposure. Tell them you would LOVE to see a DOCUMENTARY on the subject of horse slaughter. [end excerpt from HAHS post]

To which I responded at the HAHS site:

Thank you - I really appreciate this info, it zapped me into calling. I spoke with a live person rather than lvg a msg and said basically I wanted to encourage them to (1) do a longer more in-dapth piece on HS beyond the TB industry - told her to write down the initials P M U, for example - and (2) give details re how people can contact their legislators in support of the pending federal legislation. I suggested that they ADD AN UPDATE to the present show when they air it in reruns, re specifics re that; also suggested they PUT INFO ON THEIR WEBSITE how to support the bills. She sounded very supportive. Again, thanks.

I encourage everybody to call HBO and tell them something like the above.

THANK YOU ALL for all that you do for the Horses.

CJ in Hammond IN (not the CJ to whose post I am replying) [end of my response on the HAHS site]

Posted by: C. Jaffe at May 16, 2008 4:02 PM

ADDED ON REFLECTION:

TELL HBO - NOT ONLY DO A DOC - ALSO - LET YOUR VIEWERS KNOW HOW TO SUPPORT THE FEDERAL LEGISLATION.

Hi all FOB's and four legged and two legged loved ones; Linn you put my thoughts down in black and white on this forum. It is just heart wrenching to see these glorious animals breaking down way too frequently, and I can't help but feel it goes back to the breeding and racing too young, the whip another story, should not be used, if a horse doesn't run fast enough there is a reason, whipping only terrifies them. I know all won't agree, but I am not changing my thoughts on this. I have been there. Barbarag

###
Linn and all!
There is going to be a round table discussion today about Eight Belles, the whip, breeding and more. Think Jeannie Edwards, Belles trainer, jockeys and other talking about making racing safer. ESPN2 Today at the Preakness 10:00 AM my time. Not sure when the Round table will air! But I will be watching.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at May 17, 2008 3:14 PM

May the spirit of Eight Belles run behind Big Brown and push him to victory as she did @ Churchill Downs. Rest in Peace Eight Belles, and run with the Greats who went before you.

Go Big Brown. Come home safe, and may all the rest cross the finish line safely as well.

Happy Endings Department

reposting

I understand that CJ and others posted about my mission to save a injured TB filly Dap (Lone Star Miss's 1/2 sister) from Mountaineer. I posted this to the DB but also wanted to share it here.
Thank you to all who helped or prayed for her safety. For all the fear, the anguish, lost sleep, worry, tears I went through the last 10 days since she was injured during her last race, have all melted away and I am relieved and cried Happy Tears today.

********************************

I want to thank each and everyone of you for Helping bring Dap home. You have no idea how much this has meant to me. I made a promise on 1/29 to Lone Star Miss as I stood there giving her tons of loving and hugs and apple treats before I had to leave. She had given me this hug and this look and I knew what she needed from me. I had told her about her sister Dap and her race the day before and how beautiful she looked.

I looked UP at her and I said to her " I Make this Promise to you Lostar, I will watch over your sister and make sure she never goes through what you did before you found your safe haven. She will never see a feedlot, brokers lot, or auction. " She then leaned over and put her head on my chest and I swear she was crying with me. Gosh it was hard to leave her!!

Today, because of all of you, those that sent funds, cheerlead the thread, helped network, I was able to keep that Promise I made in January. You gave from the heart and for that I am eternally grateful and so Thankful.

Special thanks to some special gals who helped me find out where she went and her injury status and support. Thank you to Rachael, Amber, Jen, Amanda.. You were my rock those first few days when I was fretting over finding out what happened to her and about helping her. Thank you for all you did for me and for Dap, without the networking you did, this would not have been possible, you are true horse guardians!

Lisa at Marlifarm.. Thank you so much for calling the owner and letting him know that she was indeed wanted and for your advice to him on caring for her. You kept me sane too making those calls when I could not. You gave great advice to me and to the owner. I forever will cherish your involement in this. I know it made a difference between Dap being where she is today... all because the owner knew he had a way out and a OPTION. I hope that seed sits in his brain and grows and the next time he will reach out to the rescue community. You and Tee left a awesome impression on him the last couple of days..

Christy at AC4H, I know you could not do a whole lot but just receiving a email from you when I reached out for help was comforting to me knowing I was not alone in this. It was nice to receive a email that did not say "no, can't do it"

Melody. Thank you for all your bumps, your posting on the other threads for Dap. I so enjoyed your enthusiam and help. You kept things hot when I was working on the backside with others for Dap. You were there for me when this started too, as I told her what happened to her and you were so worried and said prayers for her everyday and sent emails each asking if anything new had come up. You have honored many horses the last 2 days to help her.. Keep up the great job!!

Tee and the other special people that have put up with me the last 10 days, you all know by now my feelings and my thanks..

Finally.. Dap when she gets off the trailer at Lifelines will have a NEW LIFE NAME. I will announce that when she is there and have pictures.. So stay tuned as you all will LOVE her New Life Name.

THANK YOU ALL

If anyone can help this precious mama and baby I would appreciate it. They are stuck inside a stall and can't go outside to play because they have no pen. I have watched them in this stall for 2 weeks and it's driving me NUTS.

The rescue needs $300. to build a pen outside and we have $150. If you could even just give $5.00 I would appreciate it. I just want them out of the stall:(

Good morning, famblee!

May Barbaro, Belles, and Prairie Bayou keep all of today's runners safe and healthy. Personally, I don't care if we don't get a TC winner this year. More is at stake.

Lyn--you nailed it, describing the prevailing feeling as "off center". Yes, that's it. But I always feel better when I come to ABR.

Sending good wishes and love to the Brennans, trying to comprehend this.

Posted by: Susan E. at May 17, 2008 5:20 PM

Lin @ 1:49pm, ##

I agree fully with your assessment. I loved Native Dancer above all horses, he was my first "little girl" love for a horse. However, to keep breeding to him so that all 20 of the horses in the Derby were from his genes is just bizarre. After all there was a weakness in the feet/legs there, and just look at the problems there with his progeny.

Why wouldn't a whip of some soft material, like nerf balls! ! , be best if hitting them is not the point? If they want to run? And the prey/flee reaction can be just the same from a soft whip.
Thanks for stirring up some thoughts in my mind about this.

God save and protect every horse hoof touching the ground today, and protect the people also.

Prayers for Erin and family, and all who are in need today.
Love ya family FOB.

Happy Preakness Saturday, Fambleee

Alex thanks for linking the NY Times article. It's a good one. I'm thrilled to death that the welfare of horses is becoming more widely publicized and the topic of major media broadcasts and articles. OUTSTANDING!!

Sorry bout the horse today. Hope he or she will be okay.

Today is the 133 anniversary of the FIRST Kentucky Derby! Can anyone name the winner? I bet there will be lotsa anyones who get this one :)

Praying for the safety of all today. If it is to be Big Brown, I hope his feet will be okay. that worries me tremendously.

Praying for Erin and her family today. Just as Edgar said about Barbaro, if tears could heal....

Love to all my fambleeeee

THE BEAUTY OF JOE AND CATHY ON A VERY, WAY TOO HOT DAY...
**************************************************
Saturday, May 17th... It was so hot yesterday an empty bag of shavings began to bubble.

More terrible heat for this weekend. Later today 4 horses will come to us from race tracks, and welcome to our world. We are a mess. Dust and poop and flies. The 4 new horses will probably plan an escape. I certainly would. Also today a thoroughbred mare arrives from a feed lot. We are shoulder to shoulder. Our neighbors Gene & Pam are trying to sell their beautiful home, but prospective buyers look across the street at our 105 horses. Poop on top of poop. Fillies and mares in season, with geldings who cling to their every word. Prospective buyers set world land speed records as they flee. But Gene & Pam still buy us dinners.

One of the horses coming today from a race track is Sands Of Time. He is 9, and Sands will not be available for adoption. Sands Of Time will hang out with other older geldings who earned good money. They brag to each other who was fastest. And on cool evenings they compete. Old Mizzou seldom loses. Our friend Holly once climbed aboard Old Mizzou, and she says it was like riding on the wings of a jet. Im A Jewel is also very fast. Smokey White Eyes leaves many of his pals in the dust. Retired geldings who still love to run. Retired mares who watch.

A letter from a reader in Maine, and she wants to know how come no more Happy Birthdays?

It became overwhelming. Besides, I was always a day or two late. With just a few paragraphs to write each morning, it is impossible to fit in all the important stuff. Like what did Brian Gill eat for supper last night? Like what clever little saying came from Allison Martino. Pieces of scrap paper all over this joint. I was losing birthday information, and hurt feelings soon followed. Old and senile in the boonies.

A letter from a reader in Los Angeles, and she wants to know if all thoroughbreds are the same? Or is each a different personality?

No two thoroughbreds are alike. The same as humans. Each with their own behaviors and personalities. This is why I love thoroughbreds so much. If they were all the same how boring the days would be.

Today is Preakness day, and we wish all the horses much safety. And now it is time to begin a scalding Saturday. Delicious coffee is from Peets, with just the right amount of cinnamon cream. A special hello to The Moy Family, and I hope we get to see you soon. A special hello to Alexis in Concord, California. Alexis and her gelding Rowdy compete at a jumping event today, and Rowdy is Ready. And a special hello to Grandma Ruth, and your pony Sam is adorable. the discussions on the roundtable are good, but lets see some action. The industry is really good at talking. Getting something done is the problem. Jen

Posted by: jen at May 17, 2008 10:02 PM

WOW! Some really excellent discussion on racing safety on both ESPN and NBC. I think the general consensus is that, maybe nothing could have saved Eight Belles, but her death has brought about the much needed discussion of ALL safety issues.

It's going to be tough. It is multi-faceted and will require sacrifices from areas of racing, as Randy Moss said.

I'm just so happy to hear all this. We are moving forward!

Barbaro, the Preakness will be run in about an hour and I am thinking of you. How spectacular you were!

A bad step(?) and a life changed, then ended. Then our lives changed and we became FoBs.

Thank you Barbaro , for your life, your races, your indomitable spirit, and your leading us to our causes we now fight. Bless you in heaven, and may all horses today on any track come home safe.

And it was all Barbaro in a sublime performance.
Let us say good luck to Big Bad Brown and all the others who give it all on the track. Go with God.

Watching anything but the Preakness...and praying that all the runners come home safe.

Three new refugees from the Wonderful World of Dog Racing are on their way from Iowa. The Sarasota boys were shipped there last week. They will then go to Cleveland where other groups will pick up their doggos.

Then our wonderful Laura Pike will pick up mine and heres and a few others (due to the unthinkable factor of a group dropping out at the last minute...) they'll be bathed and Frontlined, and then move on to my house--probably to arrive here
near midnight. This is when I wish I had BIG floodlights in the back yard...sigh.

So sleep may be a moot point, we'll see. They may just be exhuasted enough to pee, eat a small meal and then crash. (yeah, that's my vote.)

Erin heavy on my mind and heart...I hope tomorrow will be wonderful for the Brennans.

My favorite part of the Big Brown experience is the stories of both the trainer and the jockey having come back from hard/bad times, and esp about the jockey's younger son. He's a special needs kid, deaf w/ recent cochlear implants (if I recollect correctly), who is losing his vision. Before the Preakness today the jockey said the best part of winning the Derby was that his son saw him do it - and today after the race, again he said the best thing was his son saw it . . .

I have a love-hate relationship with this horse as I think many of you do - as Susan E said in her post at 12:10 am -

And Big Brown, with whom I'm trying not to fall in love....damn!!!

It's like I feel that fate cheated Barbaro out of winning the Triple Crown and if he had then Big Brown's doing it too would not be as much of a bid deal, know what I mean? Silly but real . . .

That was really something when he turned it on. Especially the view from the "blimp" in the reruns. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it . . .

Hiya, FsOB! I am so grateful to read that today's Preakness was a safe one. Brent & I were out in the car when the race was probably on; we couldn't find a radio channel with the Preakness, however. In a weird way, that was comforting, as we had heard the Preakness called on the radio in 2006. And the rest was history....

I did more "public education" at the hairdresser's shop today and it never ceases to amaze me how many well-informed people don't know about America's "dirty little secret".

My love to each of you, fellow citizens of the Barbaro Nation this evening! Thanks, Alex, for all you do to continue Barbaro's memory and to seek safety for horses in North America. I'll love Barbaro forever. Peace, RMH

Hi All: There was an article today in my local newspaper that turned my stomach. I don't know if you guys are aware of it but something needs to be done.

Apparently in Canonvanas Puerto Rico There is a racetrack that will kill perfectly healthy horses if they don't perform well on the track. For twenty dollars the horses are taken behind the track and given a lethal injection. The reason this is done is because they can't afford to take care of them or because they just want revenge against the horse for not doing well. Can you believe this? They say the vets that perform this try to talk the owners into having the horses adopted out but they want them dead. There is one trainer that takes the horses and gets them adopted but for the most part approximately 400 perfectly healthy horses die each year.

I don't know how to get this started, but I would like to find a way to close this track down. Most of these horses are bought within the U.S.

Any suggestions on how we can stop this?

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd, as you take me to where angels walk!

Wow, I think someone just said it earlier "okay to exhale now" . . . . I was not able to watch either, and then I was terrified to hear any news reports at first or anything until I could get here . . . . I had wanted to see the Derby but life circumstances prevented it, and before I could get to check in here later, I happened to hear a newscast clip and my heart broke in two again when the announcer said "Tragedy at the Derby" . . . . Love you, too, forever, Eight Belles, love you forever. . .
So yes I just exhaled. . . .
God Bless you, Big Brown, and all your connections, and God Bless everyone here - you truly are as the song says "simply the best"!!
I just couldn't do it without all of you here!
And most especially thanks to you, Alex, for making this all possible.

Holding hands, paws, hooves. . . with all the Barbaro Nation!!
You go Big Brown, but oh please go safely, all of our precious equines running today . . . .

Sorry, just thinking of Erin's special day tomorrow, The Preakness today, and all of you, and the emotions have me tonight . . . .

Love, hugs, prayers to you all, two- and four-footed. . . .

Weak field, strong field.... it's not going to matter. Big Brown hasn't even really run yet.

It's not that his competition is weak...
it's that he is so very strong. His competition can't touch him, and he deserves the credit for that.

I was watching the after Preakness race coverage on HRTV and the interviews with the various trainers. Gayego's trainer said he had Gayego scoped after the race and it detected a mucous problem for Gayego. The trainer predicted that Gayego would be sick with a fever tomorrow.

three new freew greyhounds in crates, fed, pooped, peed and quiet---we'll see how that goes after the lights go out.

My whole possee relatively crazed. My old brood, Heart, ran them around the turnout yard, they were in good paws with her.

Congrats to Brown's peeps. He moved out like the rest of the field--able/unable: whatever--were standing still. It was like, Hey: OUTTA MA WAY.

Hope he holds together. Wish he was older. I too waited till the ALL CLEAR was sounded before watched the playbacks.

My problem is: I wanted it to be two years ago, with Barbaro running a safe and fast Preakness and moving on to make history.

Instead, he moved on and founded a movement, and we will move mountains. Nearly $1,000,000 raised for laminitis, many, many horses ransomed and brought out of the system.

I look at these o=poor JUST 2 year old grey brothers and the little 5-year old, Tiny Dancer. They are so tired their eyes are rimmed in red, flews all puffy. So now we try to sleep....

Love to the Brennans, to the FoBs, to the grooms, the ex-riders, the breezers, the hot walkers, jockeys, all the people who put their hands on these animals everyday, know them like their wrist watches.

I feel like the whole field dodged the bullet today. I hate to feel that way about anything...

Sleep tight brothers and sisters, and hope that we'll do the same. These poor babies traveled about a 1,000 miles today.

But they're alive. And that's something.

Posted by: jonnagrey at May 18, 2008 5:43 AM

Jonna,
Bless you for rescuing the greyhounds! My beagle was a rescue--we were her third and will be her final home. At least the second owner realized a third trip to the shelter for her (the first owners gave her up, reclaimed her, and turned her in again) would mean euthanasia. Thank you from another horse and dog lover.

###To me, Big Brown's victory is summed up in one word: Montril. It is a steroid and will of course make him bigger, faster, stronger than others not on it.

BB's win yesterday was impressive, but Secretariat's victory was more so in the Belmont--and HE won the Triple Crown without steroids.

The purist in me is coming out. I don't like Popeye arms in baseball, either.

Alex, I feel remiss for not thanking you for all you have done on behalf of horses in North America over the past two years. Your ongoing dedication to Barbaro's memory and the safety of all of his equine 'brothers and sisters' is unparalleled!

#### May Erin Brennan and her family have a most beautiful Sunday.

To Jonna: May your new rescues have a fabulous first day of freedom and love.
To Lorraine: You posed a very thoughtful question yesterday about the race track in Puerto Rico. You might wish to contact the Legislative Afairs Office at the Humane Society of the US for some suggestions. Perhaps they could conduct some fact-finding investigation? Or the ASPCA? Others here may have additional suggestions. Please keep us updated, OK? I haven't visited Puerto Rico in a few years, but have been hoping to do so next Spring. Your information could help me decide whether to travel there or not. ####

May 18 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Have we lost control of who we are? Have we allowed ourselves to get to a position of little or no control--believing that we must forfeit bits and pieces of who we are to get along? The one weapon against us that has the total respect of the world is the business of weight loss. Never have so many fought so long to lose so little. Think of the dollar value put on a pound of flesh--the hype, the remorseful tears, the acceptance that we cannot control our eating. Though over-indulging in anything is dis-ease, it is no disease. It is the silent enemy, the spirit of destruction that the Cherokee calls u so nv i, which is not good but downright evil. It is the enemy with no power except subliminal suggestion. But enter the Great Holy Spirit, and its great roar is but a pipsqueak. We have to care, but we also need to know the truth to be free.

When the Great Father sent out men to our people, I was poor and thin; now I am large and stout and fat. It is because so may liars have been sent..and I have been stuffed full of their lies.

3 of my 4 step - horse children head about 30 miles north today for summer grazing in a beautiful and lush area with a stream running through it. They are all brushed and beautiful. Chief stays behind for a few weeks for gelding (yay) and recovery, then he'll join them.

The owner of these horses has become more sensitive and responsible. Only because I've been telling her all of the things I have learned here. The good stories and the very bad ones. Another Barbaro effect for these 4 fur babies.

NEW ANGEL HORSES WITH A MISSION TRUE STORY CONTEST

A New Contest about Power of Story to Change Hearts and Minds about the Treatment of Horses

[posting Excerpt from email from Angel Animals Network]

Allen and Linda Anderson, authors of a popular anthology series that includes Angel Horses: Divine Messengers of Hope (New World Library,
2006), are looking for true stories about equines that inspire rather than outrage animal lovers.

Their Angel Animals Network (www.angelanimals.net) is sponsoring
the 2008 Angel Horse Contest to find the most thought-provoking horse stories and consider them for publication in their book, Angel Horses with a Mission (New World Library, Fall 2009). There are cash prizes and no entry fee. Complete contest rules and a downloadable entry form are at angelanimals.net/awards.html or write
with SASE to 2008 Angel Horses Contest, POB 26354,
Minneapolis, MN 55426.

Allen Anderson says, "By showing how the immense spirit, heart, and intelligence of horses enables them to fulfill a higher purpose, we hope the power of true stories will persuade people to challenge brutality and the practice of treating horses as disposable possessions."

The Andersons suggest considering the following questions and entering the contest by writing about profound experiences: "Has a horse performed an act of compassion, protection, healing, or heroic courage? Have you had a miraculous or mystical experience with a horse? Did a horse lead you to finding your purpose in life? Do you know a horse who has taken on the mission of giving service?" [end of excerpt]

So funny you should mention that: my dining buddy and me were deciding to do that very thing this week....oh, god, something to look forward to...sigh.

I , however, despite the massive consumprtion on B&J over the past several months, am not hauling around a probably 200# plus foal...I love how Apple is JUST THERE for her. It is so touching.
Joe writes about these pairings-up on their farm all the time.

One of the things about horses that I would like to experience firsthand one day...of course, I'll be leaning on a frakkin walker by then......

Can you hear them...I can..the little whispers around the track...what if...what if Big Brown wins the Belmont..the next logical race would be the Breeder's Cup..a Grand Slam..then retirement to Three Chimneys...but what if....Curlin decides to defend his Breeder's Cup title...

The whispers are starting..

Big Brown and Curlin...Match Race...

Blessings and happiness at the Brennan home today, please, God. Let her feel well enough to be receptive and peaceful. We need a very big, fat, brought on by chubby seraphim and baby angels for this Erin miracle...

She is so old and wise before her time, please allow her to feel well enough to be a child today, simply a child with her face buried in a horses' mane.
Thank you God. Thank you to all the sublime mortals who made this happen. Happy landings!

###jonna, I think it would depend on what steroid was used. Anytime steroids are used the body slows down producing naturally whatever substance is being given..the problem comes when the steroids are stopped, the natual production has to pick back up.

I know quite a bit about steroid use/abuse in people having been around the body building community for 30 years. I can tell you first hand and graphically what steroids do to men and women in terms of muscle mass, mood swings, tendons and bones that snap under over developed muscle mass, sex drive, and performance.. I would think everything I know could also be applied to horses.

I am 100 % against steroid usage. I have seen what it does,it isn't pretty.

Much love to all on this "morning after," thinking of Barbaro and how we all found this place two years ago TODAY.

I am hoping Erin has a wonderful visit with her pony this morning, and that it doesn't wear her out. Stacy has said she can bring the pony to visit on more than one occasion. That is the wonderful thing!

Erin's Surprise - crossposting from the DB

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=23790.81

We are back. And there was no way I wouldn't have missed this for the world. I started my day at 6 am on five hours of sleep. Due to Anne's post about Erin not wanting people there, I did a pony swap. Because Lucy's owners wanted to go, and I felt obligated to Erin to abide by her wishes.

Nemo started his day with a warm breakfast and a bath. He stood tied in his stall after I towel dried him, and went to get ribbons. I tied ribbons and bows in his mane, and Katie added a bow to his forelock.

We preloaded goat and bunnies and then spray painted hooves pink as we led him to the trailer.

We got there, and it was obvious Princess Erin was uncomfortable about coming out. But Nemo grazed, we pulled the goat out, pulled the bunnies out, and then Erin was carried out by her dad. She was a little upset over someone there, so once that view was blocked, and a bunny placed on her shoulder/neck area, she smiled. And it was a beautiful smile. That bunny just layed there, kissed her, and she loved it. She smiled as Katie and Jacob (Rachel's son) fed Hannah LaMantana, our baby lamncha goat, and seemed scared of Nemo. I was't sure if she thought she was expected to sit on him, so we kept him angled close, and I had Anne pull out the pictures of Princess Erin the pony. I knelt by Erin, and explained how some special magical people heard she wanted a pony. and the ponies name was Erin, and she was all hers. And she smiled that beautiful smile again. Nemo grazed behind her, and we took pictures. She liked the ribbons and bows, and he was pretty good.

He really hated the idiot who started to fire up a large motorcycle and that had him antsy, but Erin had gone inside and fallen alseep, and it was up adults talking.

I told Anne that if a pony, rabbit is needed. CALL. I will be there. ANYTIME. Period. And that more pitcures of erin's pony will be coming along to them as well.

You ladies are so wonderful. You allowed me to help make a little girls wish/dreams come true. I truly wish Erin had been more able to at least pet Nemo. But seeing her eyes follow him as he grazed, and as people fed him grass and clover. Well that was pretty special as well.

Rachel took pictures, since I was pony tending, and we got some of her husbadn goat wrangling as well. Which I hope she posts one of, since he was so cute moving that itty bitty baby goat around.

## Jonna, you said earlier you are trying not to fall in love with Big Brown..I know exactly how you feel. Out of love and loyalty to Barbaro I'm not ready for a Triple Crown hero, I don't want people to forget about Barbaro.

I do love Big Brown, can't help it..he's a horse, I love them all. Who I don't love is pretty much everyone on the Big Brown team..Barbaro had the total package..good owners, first class trainer, great jockey..
With Big Brown..I can't get close to his connections..a bunch of Wall Street investment bankers..and a trainer of questionable character...When I see them all together I think of two words, shysters and shady...All about money...not about the horse.. The jockey I think is a good guy, but he's the only one I like of all Brown's connections.

LOL CJ, you beat me this time, but I will get you!

Posted by: Barb AZ, Chunky and Punky at May 18, 2008 5:22 PM

Harriette (and all) Did you see what I posted yesterday about Big Brown's jockey? He too had hit bottom and made it back to the top - and he has a special needs son, just had (or was getting, missed the detail) cochlear implants to be able to hear, and was losing his vision as well; when the jockey was interviewed after the Derby, he said the best part for him was that the son was able to see it; and he said the same thing after winning the Preakness - I gotta love him.

Posted by: C. Jaffe at May 18, 2008 5:35 PM

reposting

I don't think I've ever seen anything like it . . .

Posted by: C. Jaffe at May 18, 2008 1:14 AM

(you see, me being always for the underdog - Boston Blackie complex - I love it when people hit bottom and come back - both the jockey and the trainer have done that - gotta give 'em so much credit for coming back . . .)

Posted by: C. Jaffe at May 18, 2008 5:38 PM

Gayego, hate to hear of a problem, hope you won't have anything too bad. Get well soon.

## Robyn Hoffman, what a great thing to do, sending Erin flowers on this day! Its going to be a wonderful day for her- I pray also that she is strong enough to enjoy it fully. Bless her and her family.

## Christian, what do you think about a fresh Casino Drive coming in against a tired Big Brown ? I'm not sure . I've seen so many too tired to win in the stretch when challenged by a good fresh horse. Is BB up to it? I sort of hope so.

## C.J., your comments above rather mirror mine, although I have thought that if Big Brown ( who I am falling for fast ) - If he wins the triple crown- will it bring more excitement and interest to horse racing- and therefore, more interest to our cause of stopping slaughter. Will it?? I hope so. Our Barbaro leads his own people and has gone far beyond a triple crown. At least I hope so, but I know the bittersweet "it should have beens" you feel, cause I do too. :>)

UPDATE:

For the Frens who are following the tale of the Young Prince's journey, THISGOODPLACE5: War Horses is now posted on the DB under the BARBARO/NICANOR thread.

Here is an excerpt:

The grey Genneral spoke. "Yes Boys, only horses 'r called. Great Masse won't be a-taking any t'other four legged creatures along t' th' big'un. He'll go into it on the back of a great-white-war-horse, 'n be a-ridin' in glory... a-smitin' th' enemy sure proper. NO kind t'others gonna be a-goin'. Hm-hmmmmm. Jist horses 'r called."

The red flash came into his eyes again. He put his head down and pawed the ground. He closed his eyes, as if to snuff the flame. Then he raised his head, shook himself and said,

"Gotta be ready...gotta figger it out. Hm-mmmmm."

...............................................

Especially thinking of Erin today....May great Love surround her. May the joy of that love, and the spirit of a white mare's peace, strengthen and sustain her.

Have a wonderful Sunday, Dear Frens.

Your Fob Fren, O

CJ, I didn't see the blimp view of the race, but what struck me near the finish was that Big Brown looked like he hadn't a care in the world, and like he could have been reading a newspaper during that last few seconds.

Prayers for this boy and his future. Good health and GOOD people.

I have learned a lot about racing since Barbaro. I always for years watched the Triple Crown races especially the beautiful Kentucky Derby. I am really surprised to learn that it is legal to give a horse steroids. I know it is illegal in human sports. ###I watched the Derby and the Preakness and I am so glad all ran safely. However, I always feel bad as I know Barbaro would have won the Triple Crown. Not a doubt in my mind. Until Barbaro I did not know about the slaughter of horses or killer buyers,, etc etc. I didnt even know my own state had horse slaughter places. I know his legacy is great and he had a destiny but how he is missed. As I said he would have won the Triple Crown without steroids.

Good morning all - thanking God that all the horses were safe in yesterdays race.
I am also trying to help a rescue in Indiana that has fallen on hard time. They have a lot of horses but not a lot of funds coming in. They also have a new foal ,Surprise, that was born to one of their rescued mares on May 3rd. We have to support these rescues after the horses are saved or there will be no place for them to go until they are adopted to their forever home. My horse Max was fostered after his rescue until adopted by me. This particular rescue group has touched my heart because her husband is disabled and they are still trying to get disability payments. My husband Bruce is disabled and I remember how hard it was until his disability payments were approved. When you have an income coming in and suddenly it ends it is really hard to make ends meet. Anyway, if you can help them the link is:

Have a question and I know yole can tell me what I am wondering about. If a horse goes into a race on steroids and gets hurt will it enable him (or her) to keep running longer even if hurt at the start of the race or whereever in the race.? Just wondering.

KY Equine Humane Center Creates Fund

Bloodhorse

The Kentucky Equine Humane Center has established the Eight Belles Memorial Fund with the blessing and cooperation of Eight Belles' trainer Larry Jones and his wife Cindy.

"We chose KyEHC so our filly's memory and our love for her will live on, and in turn, Eight Belles will be helping horses that are less fortunate,” said Larry and Cindy Jones

Donations made to the Eight Belles Memorial Fund at the KyEHC will go directly toward providing humane treatment and shelter to any horse in Kentucky that is in need. Horses given refuge at KyEHC are available for adoption to caring homes.

KyEHC's Mission: To provide humane treatment and shelter while working as a clearinghouse to seek adoptive homes for all of Kentucky's unwanted equines, regardless of breed; To educate the public and raise awareness for responsible equine ownership so that fewer horses end up in crisis; and, To work with and serve as a model for organizations with the same mission in other states: to save America's equines from inhumane treatment.

DEAREST FOBS I AM SO (thank you for this word Alex,)
KNACKERED BY LAST NIGHT AND TODAY AT THE MALL OF WRETCHED EXCESS WHERE IT SEEMED THAT THE PRICE OF ADMISSION WAS AN IQ BELOW 70 AND ADVANCED PREGNANCIES ON WAY TOO YOUNG WOMEN IN TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE MATERNITY GEAR.....Oh god, I mean, we all fled screaming....)

ANYHOW: I CAN'T REMEMBER IF I POSTED TB FRENS OR NOT, SO HERE, PERHAPS FOR THE SECOND TIME, IS JOE ON SUNDAY.
************************************************
Sunday, May 18th... The 4 new geldings from race tracks came off the van yesterday and immediately began sweating. It was 243 degrees. Each gelding goes into an individual round pen, and they roll and scream and then roll some more. In seconds all 4 were filthy. I was going to give baths so photos could be snapped, but the day got away. On the morning journal tomorrow I will show you the new race horses.

There is Sands Of Time, he is stunning, and 9 years old. There is Zero Quadro, a little gray gelding, and I am willing to bet he was born in 04. Hence the name Zero Quadro. There is a liver chestnut named Fit To March. He is a wee bit wired. And a hunk with the name of Buddies Mandate, and already Buddy is in love with Gidget, the crippled mare who runs lose in our mare motel area.

From a feed lot in Wilton came a thoroughbred mare who we now call Tara. The other day there were 3 e-mails in a row written by girls named Tara. You could do a term paper on What Are The Odds? There is Tara in Vacaville. Tara in Marin. Tara in Reno. All 3 e-mails came within 2 hours of each other. Which is why the next filly or mare from a feed lot was going to be named Tara. We are clever that way...

Below I am showing you pictures from past winters. Good times. It was miserable yesterday. I watched as flies packed their tiny little suitcases and moved on to Portland. The heat continues today, and then thankfully we get a cool down.

Chores must be completed before the day grows hot. Poop on top of poop. Legs to unwrap. 4 horses on daily bute. 5 horses on special supplements. Turn outs for play time. Water buckets to scrub. Pictures of 5 new horses from yesterday. Round pens to clean. Stalls to clean. All of this before noon, and good luck with that. Ice cold orange juice is from Simply Orange, and stale glazed doughnuts were made by Entenmanns. Enjoy your TNT Law And Order marathon Sunday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

I read in todays paper that ones home gave a impression of the one who lived there. Well, I have 2 leather barcaloungers (not real leather) with stuffing coming out where Chiefs toenails have ripped them. Blinds over front windows where Chief torn them trying to get to the mailman as he walked across the porch are ripped to shreads. BEWARE OF DOG sign on windows (cant afford an alarm). Big sign on stoorm door PLEASE DO NOT KNOCK OR RING DOORBELL ( to keep blinds from being further destroyed). Have learned some people cant read . My bed has a dirty hairy blanket for chief to lay on. I guess that defines my personality. By the way I cant type either-as thats storm not stoorm. p.s. I wish Chief could still jump and hit the blinds and jumpin the chairs. he is doing fair but if he tries to jump he loses control of his back legs and falls backward. This from a dog that used to jump a 6 ft. fence. I think it embarresses (sp? cant spell either) him. However, all in all he is eating good and seems to feel good. I feel every day is a gift.

Prayers for Chief, Bagherra, for Erin, for Erin, for Erin, for the Brennans, for all waiting in feedlots.

For the souls of our DULY ELECTED OFFICIALS, who can expect us to be on their faces again tomorrow: for Jerri & Apple, for Stephanie and Diane.

Who am i missing? The multitudes. The suffering in mind or body. The confused. The compromised. And last but not least, all of us, The Nation--the Barbaro Nation, who continue to move forward despite our broken hearts, shredded hearts, and the beauty of encouragement from each other, that we will prevail...no matter how long it will take to make life right for horses--and greyhounds--in our world.

And again, for Erin and Anne--that sacred bond between mother and daughter--which has sustained life for all the Brennans all these months. Perhaps the most touching picture of all taken today, was the bunny snuggled close to Anne's throat.

For some reason, this brought me to tears...

so tired, we will crash early early tonight. So much to do tomorrow. So many chances to get it right, my FOBs. Love to all, and the tender sensation of a warm, young rabbit curled against your throat. Heart beating fast, young fragile life, caught forever in the frame.

Dear Lord: looking for a miracle. And we thank you for those already dispensed. The Brennans need you now. Please be present.

STRATEGY FOR MONDAY MAY 19

Both the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), have the power to bring the bill up for consideration in their respective chambers, therefore it is vital that as many people as possible, both at the grassroots level and internally within Congress, insist that the House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader do everything in their power to afford the bills legislative due process and bring them immediately to the floor for a vote.

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

It is our understanding that more co sponsors would certainly facilitate our efforts with Speaker of the House Pelosi and draw the much needed attention to this legislation. For this reason, we will be posting the names of Representatives that we will be targeting.

My one thought on Big Brown winning a Triple Crown is that it might lessen the pressure on Nicanor, Lentenor and the baby to come. I hope they can win a Crown for Barbaro. I hated I missed the feature on Nicanor!
