Barbaro Updates: 586

updates are now here.

Update 3474: Nothing unusual in the Necropsy report of Eight Belles: Eight Belles' Necropsy Report Released.

Not too sure what to make of this: Safety Panel to Serve as 'Bully Pulpit'. One of my concerns was the lack of teeth such a panel will have (Safety Panel Needs an Independent Voice) and this piece seems to admit it!

Update 3473: Thursday's Preakness update: Preakness Update: Thursday.

From The York Dispatch: Horse racing industry must try harder to reduce on-track deaths.

Update 3472: Part of the stakes-rich undercard of the Preakness is the second running of the Barbaro Stakes, won last year by the Michael Matz trained Chelokee: Roman Emperor Gets Shot in Barbaro
.

Update 3471: A chilly windy morning this morning at Woodbine, but once the sun came up it started to warm up a little. What happened to spring around here ? We had eight sets, four before the break and four after the break. Three of those after the break went to the gate for some gate schooling. All my horses went nicely. No dramatics for today which is a relief after the last couple of days!

Update 3470: Big Brown who has been put in as 1 - 2 favorite, but will likely go off at shorter odds than that, has post position 7 for the Preakness: Big Brown Draws Post Position 7.

Please keep calling and writing.

Let's remember that Erin's mom worked at Kennett Florist... Let's shower that house with the kind of floral love we lavished on Barbaro.

Dear Anne and Terry have done everything right where Erin is concerned. How hard to come to this day.

Interesting. What a BIG shock....
*************************************************
The New York Times leads with a look at the panic that set in among Republicans yesterday after their candidate lost a special Congressional election in Mississippi. It marked the third-straight loss for a Republican-held seat this year and GOP leaders are scrambling to figure out how they can prevent getting trounced in November. "The political atmosphere facing House Republicans this November is the worst since Watergate," Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia wrote in a memorandum.

Good Thursday morning FOBs

I have no words to express the sorrow I feel after reading Erin's update. Tears are flowing. God help the family in whatever way they need it.

We have our marching orders for the day and even though we're getting some good media coverage, the pro-slaughter stuff continues as well so we have to fight, fight, fight for the legislation to protect our horses from such a horrific death.

Thankfully Kaiser is home and doing well. When the tech brought him out yesterday and he saw me, he was an absolute lunatic. She had a very difficult time trying to restrain him. He's adjusting to walking with the cast which is much different than walking with the splint. He is more than happy to be home. The challenge now will be to keep him calm, per the doctor's directions. On another happy note for us, the power unexpectedly came on last night. You can't imagine how I appreciate running water. And - last I heard, they caught the arsonist. I still smell burning so I imagine fires are going on somewhere in our area.

My prayers for all FOBs and those they love.

Great work, yole, on the ACHE rescue taking place today in El Paso--where so many of our horses pass over the border to wretched death at the hands of the frakkin Mexicans.

As usual: we all pulled it together, and I could not be more proud of all who took place in this rescue.

####
And our Erin. I don't know what to say except that her family will do whatever is the right thing for Erin. And this is because the love there is so profound, and decisions made in the arms of that kind of love just cannot be wrong. We will keep the prayer and white light and the hopes for the best for Erin flowing...

...I pray that God have mercy on the horses at El Paso today, and bless those who are trying to save them....

Good Morning Everyone,
My God, poor Erin and her family. If anyone is interested please go to www.alexslemonade.org read the story. I feel making donations to a cause started by a nine year old child to find a cure for childhood cancer fits here.

Afleet Alex's team also donated to her, and her name was combined with the his due to the same name. It is a good story. Alex was from CT so we support her cause. The heartbreak for sweet Erin and her family. God Bless them during this difficult time.

Good Morning Sweet spirit Barbaro. I loooove you hunny.

FIRE: God keep Joe and Cathy safe....
*************************************************
Thursday, May 15th... Al and Nancy are the next house south of us, and in the big Yolo Fire of 2006 they lost the majority of their animals. Yesterday in stong winds a power line was knocked down, and suddenly there was smoke. Al and Nancy were on fire again. The smoke was intense. But thank goodness no damage to their house or barns. The fire department soaked their ranch with water, as one spark could get things going again. PG&E fixed the down power line. The winds refuse to quit. Later today we could be 101 degrees. Our neighborhood is still reeling from the fire of 2006. Trying to sleep while winds shake our ranch is impossible. At 2:00 this morning from the nice lady on TV I almost bought a fake ruby ring.

Hay, FOB's!

My new website is up for the publishing side of my life...

http://nomtarapressllc.vpweb.com.

Will be starting the healing website later this afternoon and hopefully that should be up by the weekend. Finally. Have stopped procrastinating...

Am leaving shortly for the ranch...sun is out and I want to be with the boys. Word on the home front is that things are OK -nothing definite yet so will stay in the area. I just have the feel that I need to stay close to home and I don't know why...but will honor this...plus I get to see the boys.

Everybody have a blessed day.

I LOVE MY LYNNEEELAYDEEATDAFENCEINDAWESSSWING.

I made all my calls. I pleaded, made the little girl from INDIANA laugh, reasoned, explained, implied physical harm (jest kiddin!,) cajoled, whined--you get the picture.

And I will not be watching the Preakness live: I will watch later if everyone comes home SAFE. I am officially a RACE WIMP. Just can't do it.

Prayers for Erin's amazing famblee who have managed, by the grace of God, to stay united and together these last 20 months. Please keep them in your thoughts, prayers.

I too want to DO SOMETHING for them but I don't know what. Perhaps someone who is close to the peeples at Kennett Florists can ask what they feel Anne would want. Now, while Erin is home--and still Erin--and of course, later...

Dear God she is only 7.

Some HS history re the Reps on Thursday's ABR/AAHS national list:

All are horsefriendly via their voting records. Their votes on HR 503 in the 109th Congress and HR 249 in the 110th are indicated below.

Only Rep. Loebsack is new to the 110th Congress and so had no opportunity to vote on HR 503 in the 109th Congress. All the rest on today's list voted YES on HR 503 in the 109th.

THE REST OF JOE FOR THURSDAY:
*****************************************************

How appealing, in winds reaching more than 40 miles an hour, to be sprayed by stinky mare urine. Reason number 124 why we are never invited anywhere.

Al and Nancy, great neighbors, a very sweet couple, and I hate to complain when they just had a fire. But you should see our ranch. Big dust dunes. Broken tree limbs. Little balls of horse poop pushed up against the side of our house. Passing motorists look away in disgust. Better Homes & Gardens is cancelling the photo spread.

All buckets must be scrubbed, as flying dust has turned water into mud. Gunky horse eyes need to be cleaned. Try scrapping debris from the eyes of a horse who prefers you to be somewhere else. Litter lines our fences. I wonder who ate a chili dog from Chevron?

The man on the radio is saying winds will quit this afternoon. Until then we remain on Fire Alert.

For the next 5 or 6 days we are going to be scorching. Already they are talking water rationing for Yolo County.

Because of a windy Interstate 5, a race horse coming to us from Los Angeles is instead with a friend in Patterson. We are making arrangements for the horse to arrive this weekend. Also on Saturday 2 more race horses will join our fun, and one is said to be freshly injured. From a feed lot in Wilton comes an older thoroughbred mare, and horse killer Manny Phelps says she recently gave birth, but there is no foal.

And now it is time to try and feed 105 horses. Alfalfa disappears quickly in these winds. Horses chasing their breakfast. Enjoy your very hot Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses. A special hello to Tracy, and good job with your gelding. He looks beautiful. A special hello to Maddie, and your horse cookies are delicious. I shared with a fireman who was starving. He said he could eat old socks, so I figure horse cookies is a big improvement...

OUR SPECIAL PRAYER :
Your goodness is turned upon every living thing; Your grace flows to all Your creatures; Your Light touches each of us with the reflection of Your love. Grant long and healthy lives to our special companions and all of the horses in the preakness Bless their relationships with us, and if You see fit to take them from us, help us to understand that they are not gone from us but only drawing closer to You. Grant our prayer through the intercession of good St. Francis of Assisi, who honored You through all Your creatures. Empower him to watch over our animal friends until they are safely with You in eternity, where we someday hope to join them in honoring You forever. Amen.

## Friar Tuck, when I emailed Speaker Pelosi yesterday, I got a bounceback that said the usual about courtesy to congressional ,etc., if I wasn't a constituent.

But also, she gave me a website if I want to contact her in her role as Speaker:

AmericanVoices@mail.house.gov.

I agree with Dawn in Omaha about Erin. God bless and I don't know what to say either. What can you say. One of the worst situations on earth is watching parents lose a child. Beautiful Erin.

(parenthetical OT:

As I typed 5/15 it hit me that today is the 31st Anniversary of the first time a horse fell on me! Changed my life, needless to say - but in the very best ways . . .)

Thursday 5/15 - until further notice - no more extra HAHS lists so we can devote more time/energy to making the push on National Leadership to get the bills to a vote. Excerpt from yesterday's (Weds. 5/14) Extra HAHS list Thread:

There is no extra HAHS List today, and there was none yesterday. NO EXTRA HAHS LIST YESTERDAY (Tues 5/13) OR TODAY (Weds 5/14) - temporarily suspended due to prime directive.

You may have noticed there was no extra HAHS list posted here yesterday - here's why - via a post that just came up from Daniel of the HAHS Group:

Hi all,

In case you didn't figure it out yet, the daily faxing campaign has been suspended until further notice in order to attend the special action alert released yesteday.

At this stage of the game it is far more important to press leadership to help our sponsors find a way around Craig and his foot-tapping friends than gaining new cosponsors.

Daniel [end of email from HAHS re suspension of list] [end of excerpt from above Thread]

SO - I invite you all to click here

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=23706.1

for my usual pep talk and suggestions re talking points -- AND if you have any time/energy after completing the assigned ABR/AAHS tasks, pls scroll down to post 2 of that Thread for that good alternate AWI/SAPL list of Senators.

Also - I want to keep making this info easily available:

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are in that DB Thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

FOB $1-$5 Alive Drive

Wow, we are finished with drive number 10 for Mac. We have raise over $1000 in less than 4 weeks for rescued horses. We still have a long list, but this wonderful. Thank-you to everyone for giving!

Our next drive was suppose to be for Austin at Never E Nuff Acres for emergency vet bills. But Austin's vet bill has been paid in full. So, as Dawn suggested, we are going to raise $100 for Captain, who is a special needs horse at Never-E-Nuff Acres Horse Rescue and Sanctuary.

Captain is 34 years old and was used in Mexican racing in the past. He has old fractures and arthritis and his tongue was nearly split in two by a bit. So we are going to help Captain get the care he needs.

For Paypal go to their site:

http://www.neverenuffacres.org/

You can see the donation link on the right side. If that does not work for you, please try the link at the bottom of the page.

Remember $1.50 to $6.00 if you use Paypal to take care of all the fees.

For snail mail:

Never-E-Nuff Acres, Inc.

P.O. Box 94

Waxahachie, TX 75168

Remember $1-$5 is all we are asking for, but all donations are welcome.

Please report your donation on the "FOB $1-$5 Alive Drive" thread in discussion.

We need $65 to help Captain at Never-E-Nuff Acres.

Thank-you so much for helping!

UPS delivers Big Brown in style

DERBY CHAMP HAS QUITE THE ENTOURAGE
By Maryjean Wall
MWALL@HERALD-LEADER.COM

BALTIMORE --UPS delivered the Kentucky Derby winner to Pimlico Wednesday -- a little late, although not the fault of UPS.

Big Brown's entourage surrounding the 18-wheeler horse van that brought him from the airport included a UPS delivery truck, a UPS tractor-trailer cab and a police escort.

Not too much to ask, apparently, from the delivery company that asks what brown can do for you.

The entourage pulled into Pimlico about 8 p.m., about 11/2 hours later than expected. The horse charter plane had a busy schedule Wednesday, flying from California to Baltimore with one group of Preakness horses: Yankee Bravo, Macho Again and Gayego.

The plane then flew from Baltimore to Louisville to pick up Big Brown, Racecar Rhapsody, and Tres Borrachos.

Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. said Big Brown will gallop at Pimlico Thursday and Friday, then "blow out" in a short workout Saturday, the morning of the Preakness Stakes.

The horses had a smooth trip on the plane, according to Dutrow, who is returning to the track where he spent his learning years.

"It's an honor," Dutrow said, after seeing his horse bedded down in the stall that Pimlico traditionally reserves for the Kentucky Derby winner.

"I grew up here," said Dutrow, whose late father, Dick Dutrow, was among Maryland's leading trainers. "We used to be stabled a few barns over, and I used to come over here and see the (Preakness) horses. It's a big thrill."

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at May 15, 2008 5:18 PM

ABOUT ALEX'S LEMONADE STAND

In 2000, a 4 year old cancer patient named Alexandra "Alex" Scott announced a seemingly simple idea -she was holding a lemonade stand to raise money to help "her doctors" find a cure for kids with cancer. The idea was put into action by Alex and her older brother, Patrick, when they set up the first "Alex's Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer" on their front lawn in July of 2000.

For the next four years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands and other fundraising events have been held across the country by children, schools, businesses, and organizations, all to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer. On August 1st, 2004, Alex died peacefully at the age of 8 -- she had raised over $1 million for childhood cancer research in her short lifetime.

Alex's spirited determination to raise awareness and money for all childhood cancer while she bravely fought her own deadly battle with cancer has inspired thousands of people, from all walks of life to raise money and give to her cause. Alex's family and supporters are committed to continuing her inspiring legacy through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501c3 charity. As of June 2007, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised over $18 million for childhood cancer research. The result -- Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has given millions of dollars for childhood cancer research across the country!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MISSION STATEMENT
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is a unique foundation that has evolved from a young cancer patient's front yard lemonade stand to a nationwide fundraising movement for childhood cancer.
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is committed to:

*Raising money and awareness for pediatric cancer causes, primarily research into new cures and treatments.

*Encouraging and educating others, especially children, to raise money for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OUR VISION:

A Cure for all children with cancer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT MAKES ALEX'S LEMONADE STAND DIFFERENT THAN OTHER CHARITIES?
Alex took the very simple idea of a lemonade stand and combined it with the cause of pediatric cancer - a natural and meaningful fit. The simple concept of "fighting childhood cancer, one cup at a time" has allowed people who would not usually participate in fundraising, especially children, to organize and raise money for childhood cancer. Adults and children have been inspired by Alex's giving spirit - since 2004 there have been over 8000 Alex's Lemonade Stands held across the country. These stands have been organized by a diverse group of devoted volunteers including large and small businesses, inner city school children, senior centers, pre-school aged children, a juvenile detention center, college students, and a group of homeless people. The lesson that children and adults everywhere learn from holding their own lemonade stands is simple but powerful - every person can make a difference in the world.

Additionally, Alex's Lemonade Stand has inspired people who would not be likely to donate to childhood cancer to make donations with the reassurance that "no donation is too small". The Lemonade Stand as a fundraiser brings charitable giving to communities and neighborhoods, making donating simple and rewarding for everyone.

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is also unique in its approach to providing grants. Our goal is to partner with the staff at leading research and treatment facilities around the country. We work with them to identify the specific ways in which the Foundation can make a difference for children who need new advances in treatments-and who need these options today, not tomorrow. We know what a difference those new advances can make -- they gave Alex four years of life and inspired her to start raising money to help other children with difficult to treat cancers.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
Alex Scott has been honored with numerous awards, including the Good Housekeeping Hero For Health Award, the Philadelphia 76ers Hometown Hero Award (2002 and 2003) The Philadelphia Foundation's Philanthropist of The Year for 2003, a Volvo For Life Award 2003, The Association for Fundraising Professionals Youth in Philanthropy Award 2004, a Kellogg's Child Development Award 2004,a Please Touch Museum Great Friend to Kids Award 2006, and The Sunshine Foundation's Impossible Dream Award 2006. The Philadelphia 76ers have renamed their community service award - The Hometown Hero In The Spirit of Alex Scott award.

Alex's story has been featured on The Oprah Show, The Today Show, The CBS Early Show, The CBS Evening News, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and dozens of other news segments across the country. Alex's Lemonade Stand has also been featured in People Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Good Housekeeping Magazine, and many other local and national magazines. Hundreds of newspapers worldwide have run stories about Alex and her lemonade stand including, The Philadelphia Inquirer, USA Today, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, and The New York Times. USA Today recognized her among 21 worldwide figures whose lives affected news, entertainment, sports and business in 2004; the Associated Press listed Alex in its "Roll Call of Notables who died in 2004"; Main Line Today Magazine named her "Person of the Year"; and The Philadelphia Inquirer had Alex's Lemonade Stand as one of the top 10 news of the year.

Thank you for joining us in the fight against childhood cancer... one cup at a time!

Bobby Jindal is no longer a congressman from Louisiana. He is now governor and is having a great deal of success cleaning up the corruption that so stunted recovery after Katrina and that has been a hallmark of Louisiana for many decades.

Results mixed, but fillies have paid a steep price recently

One of the most debated questions coming out of the Eight Belles breakdown in the Kentucky Derby is whether owner Rick Porter and trainer Larry Jones courted disaster by racing a filly against colts.

The quick answer would seem to be of course not. She beat 18 of 19 colts, after all, losing only to a potential monster in Big Brown.

State of the game

Eight Belles' death prompted much hand-wringing in the racing industry. Solutions are not always easy to come by, as ESPN.com's Pat Forde finds. Story
• More Triple Crown coverage

But in recent years, fillies who have tried the Triple Crown -- or the spring prep races leading up to it -- have tended to pay a heavy price. Whether that's coincidence or not is unclear, but the record isn't pretty, starting with Eight Belles.

Results of a necropsy are not yet back, so any guess why is simply conjecture at this point. Some say the race itself had nothing to do with it. Others aren't so sure, especially given the apparent competitiveness of Eight Belles.

"Perhaps getting beat to the point where the average horse quits trying, others keep trying to the point where they get hurt," said Greg Ferraro of the University of California-Davis Center for Equine Health. "Ruffian [who broke down in a famous 1975 match race with colt Foolish Pleasure] and Eight Belles are two prime examples. You're chasing something you can't beat.

"Fatigue plays a major factor in horses getting hurt. Risk of injury rises dramatically."

Last year Rags to Riches became the first filly since 1905 to win the Belmont by impressively outdueling Curlin in the stretch. She was knocked out for three months from that effort, then was injured in her first race back and was ultimately retired.

Prior to Eight Belles, the last fillies to run in the Derby were Three Ring and Excellent Meeting in 1999. It was a bad spring for both.

Excellent Meeting endured a rough Derby trip to finish fifth, and trainer Bob Baffert ran her back in the Preakness. She was so uncompetitive in that race that jockey Kent Desormeaux wrapped her up with 3/8 of a mile left. She didn't finish the race.

Three Ring had an even rougher Derby trip than Excellent Meeting and finished last. Prior to her next race, the Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park, she reared in the paddock, flipped on her back and fractured her skull. She had to be euthanized on the spot.

[+] EnlargeAP Photo/Morry Gash

Eight Belles was strong enough to finish second in the Kentucky Derby, but broke down after the finish.
Baffert also ran his other top-notch filly of 1999, Silverbulletday, in that year's Belmont. After 11 wins in 12 starts, she finished seventh and ran her slowest Beyer Speed Figure since early in her 2-year-old season. Silverbulletday did bounce back with three straight victories later that summer.

"After I ran Silverbulletday in the Belmont, I said I'd never do it again," Baffert said. "It can still be done, but it takes the right kind of horse. If something goes wrong it's painful and it's embarrassing. You better be prepared to take a lot of flak for it."

Baffert had another elite filly this year in Indian Blessing. Despite a dearth of talented 3-year-old colts in his barn, Baffert told the owners not to bother nominating Indian Blessing for the Triple Crown races against the boys.

"Don't even give me the temptation," he said.

Several fillies have tried to get on the Derby trail via one of its major prep races, the Santa Anita Derby. Recent results have not been good. Sweet Catomine was injured in the '04 Santa Anita. Surfside ran in the '99 Santa Anita and finished fifth, then was knocked out for all of the major filly races over the ensuing months. Eliza was beaten in the '93 Santa Anita, then was upset in her next start as the heavy favorite in the Kentucky Oaks.

Even the two warrior fillies who have won the Derby in modern times, Genuine Risk in 1980 and Winning Colors in '88, both went on to endure difficulties breeding. Neither has produced a stakes winner.

Of course, there are plenty of counterpoints to make. Serena's Song ran 16th in the '95 Derby and came back to beat boys later that summer, on her way to a very successful career. Sharp Cat was the beaten favorite in the '97 Santa Anita Derby but won the Acorn Stakes shortly thereafter and had two more Grade I stakes wins at age 4. Miesque routinely beat the boys during her stellar career. Ta Wee was champion sprinter in 1969 and '70, doing most of her work against boys. And three Breeders' Cup sprint champions have been females.

Jim Squires, who bred 2001 Derby winner Monarchos, told The New York Times he doesn't believe Eight Belles was put at undue risk running against colts. Arthur Hancock III, who has bred three Derby winners, isn't so sure.

He was present in 1964 when his father's prize filly, Lamb Chop, broke down against boys and had to be euthanized. He remembers his father swearing through his tears that he'd never subject a filly to that again.

"I saw it firsthand and learned my lesson there," Arthur Hancock said. "It's just nature. Do you know many women -- or any women -- who could play for the Kansas City Chiefs or Denver Broncos?

"I guarantee you one thing: If she does, it's going to be a long time before she wants to play football again. If she comes out of it. That's just the way this planet is."

Talked to Scalise's phone aide - Jindal became Governor of LA and Scalise JUST ascended to the seat "last Wednesday" said the aide.

I reminded the aide that Jindal had voted YES on 503 last Congress and YES on 249, urging that Scalise follow suit...

The Legislative Director in charge of the 503 issue is Megan Bel.

We need to ejumikate Rep. Scalise right away!

Embarassing! A lot of flack! I don't believe this was said. What about the horse who is seriously hurt or being euthanized?
Leave it at painful. A heartless greedy jerk!

Posted by: Renee Antaya at May 15, 2008 7:11 PM

What Baffert ment by painful and embarassing is not talking about a horse breaking down or being injured. It's about mismatching a filly where you may think she belongs, her record says she belongs but she doesn't.
He is a Professional Trainer, he gets paid to place his horses in races where they have a chance of winning. When he puts a filly in vs males where, as a professional, he thinks she can win and if she runs very poorly or is eased because she has lost contention in the race, it then becomes painful to watch an otherwise competitive horse running so poorly and it's embarassing because, him as a PROFESSIONAL, made a bad judgement that he will hear about and possibly lose business due to it.
Racing, when you break it down is a Business, people get into it to make money. No matter how you want to slice it, it's a business. And if not for "the " business these horses would not exist.
So if anyone thinks Baffert is a jerk, feel free to do so, but remember, he's in it to make a living, and thats the bottom line.
Matz, Motion, Tagg, you name them, they have had horses that break down. Are they all villians??
It's the nature of the business. None of them want a horse to break down, but it will happen and can never be stopped. It can become more infrequent, but that takes effort to get ALL drugs out of the breed and that will take years.

****Jonna

Prayers. That is all I can say. I can't seem to stop sobbing for them. My son and I are going to visit later today. If there is a sense of need for something, I will surely let you all know. I know all of your prayers and support have been a great comfort, especially for Anne.

I too have this overwhelming feeling that I want... no, NEED to do something. But there is nothing but to pray. Pray for peace for that beautiful child and for peace for her family and all that know her.

Erin is the girliest girl I know, which always made me chuckle, because Anne is NOT :) Erin is all about pretty things... pinks and purples, sparkly, bedazzled things. Make-up and nail polish... Hannah Montana. She is beautiful inside and out. And she is wise beyond her years. She is definitely as some would say, an old soul.

Please keep praying.

love to all,

THANKS FOR THE HEADS-UP

Just posted this Comment at the site noted above

Rep. De Lauro is to be COMMENDED, not criticized, for her position on the horse slaughter issue.

This dude Healy not only is dead wrong; he doesn't even have his underlying facts right. Anything to sling s**t at an obviously worthier opponent.

This quote of Healy is astounding:

One can only wonder why she is more concerned with horse slaughtering than protecting the health of Connecticut taxpayers who can only afford to eat horse meat," Healy complained.

Of course - the horse meat from our American horses is ONLY consumed by rich people in foreign countries, NONE by poor humans in the US or anywhere else. In the US horse meat is not approved/used for human consumption, period, whether by rich or poor people. It is not, as per Healy, consumed by people "who can only afford to eat horse meat" - abroad, where it IS consumed, it is sold and served as a HIGH-PRICED DELICACY, and high-end restaurants display signs such as "EAT AN AMERICAN CHAMPION."

We do not eat horses in the US and we do not breed horses as food animals. There are no longer any HS facilities operating within the United States. At this moment, the Senate version of the [freestanding] federal anti-slaughter and anti-export for slaughter bill, S 311, has 38 cosponsors plus the sponsor, Sen. Mary Landrieu; and the House version, HR 503, has 201 cosponsors in addition to sponsor Rep. Jan Schakowsky.

I urge everyone reading this to visit this website to find out what YOU can do to help bring the federal legislation to passage and end the insanity. americansagainsthorseslaughter.com and another great site is vetsforequinewelfare.org

He tried to jump in his chair where he likes to sleep and couldnt do it. He looks so confused like "what in the heck". He sleeps a lot but all in all he seems to feel okay. Just very quiet and I think he gets confused sometimes. I know he is almost 13 and the stroke has taken a lot out of him and I know we are on a downhill path but I am grateful to have him here now. #####Janice, I am so glad Kaiser is at home. Just got this per email, But the date was May 6 on something called feed?
And the first part talked of Daryl and it was not nice!

Some animal-rights activists who have bombarded the state senate with opposition to a resolution generate little for their efforts but resentment.

Senator Wes Shoemyer, a cattle farmer from Clarence, wants to tell Congress to keep supporting horse processing in the united states and to offer incentives to create horse processing plants. He says the federal suspension of horse slaughtering is the most impractical thing he says he's ever seen.

Horse-lovers throughout the nation have buried Senators such as Joan Bray with messages of opposition. Bray, a St. Louis animal activist herself, says somebody has misrepresented this issue throughout the country. She says 7,000 messages have jammed her e-mail and have "totally screwed up" her e-mail system. She says her staff has been busy fielding calls from people as far away as Massachusetts who don't know what the resolution says.

Supporters of the resolution maintain the federal suspension of slaughtering sentences horses to a far uglier death because many will be neglected and starved by owners who can no longer afford to keep them when the horse gets old and its health declines.

The senate, irritated at the barrage of message it's been getting, has voted 28-5 to send its message to Congress.

Concurrent resolutions such as SCR 35 seldom make any kind of an impression in Washington. But Shoemyer says other states are passing similar resolutions which might put some muscle behind the message.

May 15 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Our willingness to work at whatever we can opens doors to new opportunities. Willingness breathes life into us and gives us a vision. Hope is good but determination is even better. It sets the tone to move, to do the things set out for us. And we can do anything when we do not stop to consider what if we were to fail, or what if we are not appreciated. Cherokee women were never considered inferior to the men. They were honored and respected and educated themselves so they could teach their children. It meant hard work and determination to perfect what they could so they could pass it on. Sometimes, the main objective of our work is not just to prosper but to do a worthwhile thing well. We keep labor on a high level, never taking the easy way out. There is honor in work--even in the most menial job. Success is short-lived when the work is done for appearances.

If our children should visit this place...they may see and recognize with pleasure the deposits of their fathers.

Tracking Sold Horses: Lucky Rescue of Little Cliff
by: Pat Raia
May 10 2008, Article # 11842

During a visit to a known direct-to-slaughter holding pen in New Holland, Pa., Christy Sheidy, co-founder of equine rescue Another Chance 4 Horses, purchased a bay gelding. Thanks to a tattoo on his lip, Sheidy was able to identify the horse as Little Cliff, a Thoroughbred once owned by trainer Nick Zito. Sheidy also discovered a sticker affixed to the horse's registration documents, requesting that Little Cliff be returned to Zito when his racing career ended.

"The Zitos want him back and that's where he's going," said Sheidy.

A sticker on Little Cliff's registration papers helped him to be reunited with former owners.
The notation on his registration document was Little Cliff's ticket home. But most rescued horses don't get that opportunity.
"The tattoo and registration data follows Thoroughbreds wherever they go," said Kathleen Schwartz-Howe, executive director of Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Lisbon, Md. "Other breeds don't have that identification available."

While non-racing breed associations register horses' lineage and record ownership transfers, permanent identification, such as a tattoo, is not required, and papers might not be updated as horse changes owners.

Tom Persechino, senior director of marketing for the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), said no rule in AQHA's bylaws forbids owners from expressing their willingness to take back a horse they've sold.

"We just don't have a policy in place to accommodate that right now," Persechino said.

However, he said, the AQHA has formed a task force, and is consulting with sale barn operators to find ways to reduce the number of horses that go to slaughter.

"One of the things we're investigating is a form a seller can fill out at the auction that says if a horse is sold to a killer buyer, the seller would get that horse back," Peresechino said.

While that might work at sales at which the seller is actively involved, Schwartz-Howe has another idea for horses already in a rescue situation. Because most rescued horses don't arrive with registration documents, and rescuers generally withhold documents from subsequent owners to discourage breeding, she advocates building a "I Want My Horse Back" database. Former owners looking for a particular horse could detail the animal's description and last-known owner and location.

She noted for that for the idea to get off the ground, the database would need to have a national scope, and an organized group would have to take ownership of the project.

Persechino said he would would rather see breed associations stepping up to offer their members reclaim options.

"I can't speak for other associations, but I think the breed associations are best suited to handle a reclaiming effort, because we're already maintaining registration records," he said.

Meanwhile, Schwartz-Howe said matching rescued horses with former owners remains contingent on good luck and timing.

"We had a Morgan pony that showed up on camera when a television crew was filming here," she said, "afterward, three of his former owners contacted me about him."

Pfizer Extends Barbaro Memorial Fund Support

May 14 2008, Article # 11868
Print Email Republish Link RSS ShareThis
Since late January, Pfizer Animal Health and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) have joined forces to help fund laminitis research through the NTRA Charities' Barbaro Memorial Fund.

Pfizer Animal Health displays featuring "Riding with Barbaro" awareness bracelets, will appear in select veterinary clinics and retail outlets across the country and at major equine events. Due to the strong response thus far, Pfizer Animal Health will be expanding its number of display locations and manufacturing thousands of additional bracelets for public distribution.

"We have received enthusiastic support for our displays featuring Equimax and the Barbaro Memorial Fund Awareness Bracelets," said Kristin Ruff, marketing manager of U.S. Equine Business at Pfizer Animal Health. "In fact, the reaction thus far has well exceeded our expectations."

The partnership's aim is to increase awareness of the Fund. Owners, trainers, and horse enthusiasts can contribute directly to the work of the Barbaro Memorial Fund online at RidingwithBarbaro.org. Information on the donation site, and the Fund's goal, will continue to be featured in 2008 Pfizer Animal Health advertising for several equine products.

Yes, so, my friend , a pediatric oncologist says that this is the way kids are with cancer. Old beyond their years. Somehow able to withstand tests and procedures that would send their adult counterparts weeping to hide under their beds...

Sharon says that all little kids with cancer want from their docs/nurses/techs is HONESTY. SO I guess I have to follow Erin's lead and be as feisty as she is.
I have the old mailing address for Dr. W(?)s office where mail was being funneled before. Can you find out if Anne wants to stick with this?

Thanks dear Rachel...these things are beyond human understanding, IMHO.

With much affection: jonna

Eight Belles' Necropsy Report Released

Eight Belles

Eight Belles, the filly who broke down after finishing second in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) at Churchill Downs May 3, suffered compound fractures of both front legs at the fetlock joints, a necropsy report released May 15 concluded.

The necropsy, ordered by the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority, found no pre-existing bone abnormalities, said Dr. Lafe Nichols, Kentucky chief state veterinarian. The necropsy also found no disease or condition affecting the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems or other major organs.

Owned by Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farms and trained by Larry Jones, Eight Belles was euthanized on the track after suffering the catastrophic leg injuries.

The necropsy was performed at the Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center at the University of Kentucky. The results of routine post-race drug testing have not yet been received. That testing is being performed at the authority’s official laboratory at Iowa State University.

Porter had previously stated preliminary necropsy reports said the daughter of Unbridled's Song out of the Dixieland Band mare Away did not suffer a heart attack or an aneurysm or any other surprises.

At its regularly scheduled May 19 meeting, the KHRA will be asked by its chairman, Robert Beck Jr., to form a work group to study health and safety issues relating to thoroughbred racing.

“Nothing is more important to the racing industry than the safety of the competitors,” said Lisa Underwood, executive director of KHRA.

###
Prayers...lots of prayers...for Judith and the CA group. I received the e-mail and just went still. Please keep us posted and prayers are certainly on the way.

###
Things are improving on the home front...Liz has health issues no woman her age (24) should have. This was her wake-up call...but things are under control now. Whew...

###
The boys...what can I say about the boys. Ever since that horrendous frat party, they have been so happy around me - Windy - Mr. Cool with the Attitude especially. Today for the first time in months, he let me do direct hands-on Reiki (instead of distance sending). All the boys are so white, they are gleaming. Just gleaming.

And they know they may be about to fulfill some of their purposes. Will know more after tomorrow.

Prayers for all those in need of healing or comfort.

You are all the greatest.

Jonna and all,

If you want, you can certainly send anything to the shop. I will make sure Anne gets it. Jonna, if you email me directly rachcrafts@aol.com, I can give you the address.... just don't want to post, as I don't think Anne would want that. We talked about you today, so I am sure that Anne would not object to me giving you the address.

Erin has always been a tough kid. And your friend is right she just didn't want any BS... still doesn't... just tell her what was going to happen with tests, etc. And in my opinion, Erin knows what's going on now. Kids know. My guy is 5. He's been to visit Erin in the hospital and at home. He spent most of the time there today with Erin's older brothers. He wrote Erin a note and drew her a picture. When I went to tell him it was time to go, very large tears started to flow. I asked him what was wrong and he said very quietly, "not now. I don't want to leave Erin yet, not yet. I can't say goodbye." Kids know. Maybe not on the same level, but they know.

God, I want to understand it. I want to know why. What a damn futile question, this I know. But damnit I'm pissed. So I wish I had more insight than that... or some answer as to what we can do collectively for the Brennan's. An instruction book on how to get through this part would be helpful. But all I can do is hug them, tell them I'm here... we all are. And I continue to pray and ask you to do the same.

With love,
Rach

QUESTION for MIKE C -

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Bob Baffert WAR EMBLEM's trainer?

Did he not run WAR EMBLEM in the races injured and when he was told that War Emblem had chips in his kness, Bob Baffert's words were:

"...let the chips fall where they may"

AND Bob Baffert ran WAR EMBLEM injured, reason why such a great horse didn't win the Triple Crown. It still amazes me the potention WAR EMBLEM had if he had not been ran injured.

This is is just my opinion and thoughts as to WAR EMBLEM...WAR EMBLEM's spirit was broken by the way he was betrayed. Perhaps he is not happy where he is and that is why he is not interested in being a stud, although he is alot more handsome than many men I have known.

Rescue underway in honor of Eight Belles

Dap, a mare from Mountaineer (injured in her last race recently) - half-sister to Lone Star Miss, and (twilight zone music, please) with the same birthdate (date and year) as Eight Belles, has been bailed; she will be going to Tee at Lifelines, where Lone Star Miss lives. This is a rescue engineered via Mary L, who spearheaded the rescue/placement of Lone Star Miss. (Mary has been watching Dap's decline at the track for a while, and promises have been made to Lone Star Miss concerning her sister . . .)

All that is needed now, is funds for transport from Mountaineer to Lifelines and for X-rays so they can ascertain what is involved in dealing with the injury.

There are several DB Threads about this rescue, but now that the bail is covered, here is where they are finishing up the transport/Xray costs:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=23752.1

I can't find at the moment, the post announcing that Eight Belles and Dap have the exact same birthday, but trust me, that was posted on one of several threads about Dap.

Hay FOBs,

Thanks for the kind thoughts about Kaiser. He's doing pretty good. Mostly hopping on 3 legs using the fractured one for balance every now and then. I'm giving him (per Vet's instructions) Buspar which is a non narcotic, mild people sedative. I thought it was working yesterday but today doesn't seem to have much effect.

Sandra - glad Chief is doing well. I know what you mean about enjoying every day you have with him.

Enjoy your evening everyone.

STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY MAY 16

Both the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), have the power to bring the bill up for consideration in their respective chambers, therefore it is vital that as many people as possible, both at the grassroots level and internally within Congress, insist that the House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader do everything in their power to afford the bills legislative due process and bring them immediately to the floor for a vote.

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)
DC Phone: 202-225-4965 Fax:202-225-4188
Email: sf.nancy@mail.house.gov

Senate Majority Leader - Harry Reid (D-NV)
DC Phone: 202-224-3542 Fax:202-224-7327
Email: http://reid.senate.gov/contact/index.cfm

It is our understanding that more co sponsors would certainly facilitate our efforts with Speaker of the House Pelosi and draw the much needed attention to this legislation. For this reason, we will be posting the names of Representatives that we will be targeting.

However, this is FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY!! The day for you to go back over your lists and call those you may have missed. Or to give another call to someone that you think is close and just needs that extra push to come join us!
Please continue to gather information from your calls and pass that information on to us via email through the DB.

Finally, please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter when making your calls and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

We are BARBAROS VOICE Let it be heard!!

Hiya, FsOB! Alex & Wendy, I apologize about the double posting at 5:30 AM today. I'm not sure where my e-mails disappeared to, the network was slow to enter them onto the Comments Board. My mind is still reeling from the news about Erin's MRI. May each of you have a peaceful evening and may we all rise in the morn to say "TGIF!"

#### To Janice: I hope that Kaiser's evening is a comfortable one.
To Jonna: If you google on caring bridge and then load your e-mail address, it'll connect you to Erin's site. I checked a little while ago. There was no update from Anne for today, but it was great to see that Erin had so much mail today from all over the country.
To Sandra: Do you think that Chief would benefit from a set of "dog stairs" that they sell at Pet Supplies Plus? The stairs help dogs get up and down from bed, couches, etc,., so that they aren't needing to try to jump. One of my former colleagues used the stairs for his senior-aged dog and they really helped Randy. Please tell Chief that Nikita, the horse-loving Husky, sends him lots of love.
To Lou Ann: I keep getting return e-mails that your mailbox at home is full. ####
