Barbaro Updates: 585

updates are now here.

Update 3469: From The Rail: What to Do With All Those Horses? Of course I responded!

Update 3468: My latest entry on The Rail:

A Call for Consistent Whip Rules.

Update 3467: Must viewing for all horsepeople: HBOs piece on Horse Slaughter:

HBO -RACEHORSE SLAUGHTER

HBO HORSE SLAUGHTER PRT. 2

Update 3466: New York Times article on Nicanor: Barbaro's Little Brother Nearly Ready to Run, excerpt:

"I'm always hoping Nicanor will be as good as Barbaro," Gretchen Jackson said. "I've gone down twice to see him since he got to Fair Hill. It's fun to be down there, fun to be around him. When I see him, there is a certain happiness and sadness combined. It's a very emotional thing for me. When I see him, I like to rub my hands down his legs. It makes me feel like I'm back in touch with Barbaro."

Update 3465: Another relatively quiet morning this morning, with only six sets. I had three go to the gate, which does not open until 8:30 am so we had a little waiting around. I did fall off this morning. I think the horse was as shocked as me, and just stood there and waited for me to lead him off the track. He only jinked a little, but sometimes that is all that is needed when you are not paying attention! We had a few visitors to the barn after we were done work. I showed them around and tried to remember the name of all our horses. It was a challenge that I failed on a couple of occasions! Oh well, I'll be bringing in the glue tomorrow!

Update 3464: Thoroughbred Charities of America has announced a memorial fund to honor Eight Belles in light of all the outpouring of support: TCA Announces Eight Belles Memorial Fund.

Preakness preparations on Tuesday: Preakness Update: Tuesday.

Please keep calling and writing.

Comments

Hiya, FsOB! To Alex & Wendy, it appears that the morning has begun with spam. My thanks to MJ for posting the great reprint last night re. Nicanor and Mrs. Jackson's visits so far to Fair Hill to see him. What a vision I got of her, running her hands down his legs and thinking of his big brother!

And please, everyone, read Martita's poem from last night night. I agree, Martita, you had a flash of revelation and a message from Eight Belles herself when you saw Winskow Homer's "Eight Bells" at the Brooklyn Museum last Sunday. Courage, everyone, and may you have a safe & productive day. Peace, RMH

Beautiful picture of Nicanor and a great article on the front page of the sports section in todays NY Times. I was so excited to see this--he is so gorgeous.

Posted by: lindasnyc at May 14, 2008 12:34 PM

The Nicanor article in the Times has a link on the discussion board. The last paragraph will break your heart.

Posted by: MJ at May 14, 2008 12:56 PM

"Liz Harris, executive director of TCA acknowledges, “Many of the donations that have come in, were actually cashed winning tickets that people didn’t want to spend on themselves”.

WOW! To me, this says ALOT about how people feel about the horse. Its not always about the gambling. PLEASE!! The Industry must take heed from this and continue along this path of finally seeing the light about what most people want to see in Horse Racing. Even in a time when people need extra money, they are turning in their tickets and wont take the winnings from this sad event. I salute them and thank them.

I hope TCA can raise lots of dollars for all causes associated with the betterment of horse welfare out on the track in honor of Eight Belles and Barbaro and all the others before.

Good Tuesday morning FOBs,

I'm still out of touch having no power, so I am not up on everything that is going on here at ABR. I have very limited computer access at work. Thankfully, we now have a working phone at home and there are no new fires cropping up right around us, so I am grateful for that. I'm also very thankful that we have a generator so we won't lose all the food in the refrigerator. I feel like complaining about not having power but then I see the burnt homes and realize that we don't have it so bad.

Thank you Robyn for your kind thoughts. Today I'm going to bring Kaiser home from the Vet. I was hoping to have electricity before he came home (so the house will be cooler) but not to be. I also wanted to wait until the evacuation threat was over. We'll have to use some kind of mild sedation to keep him calm and quiet so the fracture can heal. I tried the natural stuff which did nothing.

Have a great day everyone!!

FOB $1-$5 Alive Drive

Thank-you! We finished drive number 9 in memory of dear Twinkle Toes. We have raised over $900 in 3 weeks. We are now on Mac at The Humane Society of the Ozarks. Mac is being fostered by Le Ann, who does a wonderful job bringing back starved horses. The Humane Society of the Ozarks needs the funds to take care of Mac.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: Earmark your donations for "Macintosh" or he will not get them.

You can donate using paypal on their website:

http://hsozarks.tripod.com/

The link is at the bottom of the left column just above InPrint in red.

REMEMBER to NOTE that it is for "Macintosh."

Or you can snail mail to:

The Humane Society of the Ozarks

413 N College Avenue

Fayetteville, AR 72701

Again please NOTE that it is for "Macintosh."

$1.00 to $5.00 is all we are asking. At fees for Paypal $1.50 - $6.00.

Remember $1-$5 by snail mail. Group donations welcome. Paypal at least $1.50 to $6.00 to cover all fees. We are asking for your pocket change, not your gas money.

Please report your donation on the "FOB $1-$5 Alive Drive" thread in discussion.

$40 needed.

Thank-you!

### Hi Everybody! Back after the war in Jeff city yesterday. I think Daryl and I left with some scars, but knowledge to know how to fight back. After very shabby treatment by Wes Shoemyer the sponsor and the committee as a whole, I left devastated. Just a few moments ago, I recieved a formal apology call from a member of the committee and my rep about the treatment we recieved and that they will deal with this. It has made me more determined that this arrogant man MUST BE TAKEN DOWN! He mocked me with juvenile comments and hand gestures during my whole testimony. And finalized with a threat that if I kept it up, he was going to make it worse for our cause. People who make that statement are threatened. He knows we are right, we must pound those reps with e-mails with facts- not just emotion. They must know the truth. Lets not give up FOBS! THIS man needs a good slap across his face, and we'll do it with a copy of his resolution as its falling to defeat. Jen

Good morning everyone,

Checking in before I start my calls/emails today. Please ask everyone you know to help us.

MJ, saying special prayers for Day bue.

Janice, how awful to be going through what you are. Thoughts and prayers to you, Kaiser and your whole family. I hope you get power soon.

I have a framed photo of a horse named Summertime Promise on my wall. Years ago, in the late 70's, when I first started working at the track, I took care of her. She was trained by Jack Van Berg. She is Barbaro and Nicanor's great, great, great grandmother (perhaps more "greats" there....she's way up in the lineage).

Anyway, looking at her photo, Barbaro, and now Nicanor, it is amazing the resemblence. Same eyes and face. I treasure this photo of her, she was such a sweet girl.

Make it a good, and productive, day everyone.

Wendy, I used to represent the AQHA in my job. I gave them up as it is such a conflict of interest and I had no intention, or desire, to assist them in any way.

Financially, it was a hugh loss for me, as they are a big organization. But, I don't care. I did what I felt was the right, and moral, thing to do.

Posted by: Skyler at May 14, 2008 4:33 PM

Hi everyone:
Just need to tag on behind Jen's post. Boy, were we treated like dirt. Especially her! The first man we met was rude, condescending....outright mean to her. He had no license. Just arrogance and stupidity....which is a lethal combination.
During her testimony, one member was especially rough on her. This was a hearing.....you know, let's hear your side, then let's hear the other side. No way on this platform. I wanted to smack the guy with my golf club but my swing is so bad, I'd probably miss.

Hay, Jen is a true warrior. We shared tears after the hearing. Her passion for Barbaro's tasks....wow...deep, very deep. I want to thank her for allowing me to witness true strength, resolve and the way she stood up to Shoemyer....I could not be more proud of someone!

I believe a component to success is this: "It's not how hard you get punched. It's how hard you punch back!" She took some unbelievable punches and walked out with a resolve stronger than she went in with. Powerful lady. Jen, I'm proud of you!

FYI - here's some prior HS history info on the Reps on today's (Weds) ABR/AAHS list:

Rep. Henry Johnson (GA) is new to the 110th Congress so did not vote on HR 503 in the 109th Congress. He did vote YES on HR 249 in the 110th Congress. All the others on today's list voted YES both on HR 503 in the 109th and HR 249 in the 110th. (none cosponsored HR 503 in the 109th)

So they all have horsefriendly voting records. Please remind them of that, and encourage them to cosponsor AND to urge Rep. Pelosi to move HR 503 to a vote.

IMO - Thank them all for their YES vote on HR 249 and remind that 249 only applies to WILD equines and that we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to end export.

#####Jen, thank you for all that you did yesterday in standing in the line of fire and giving it your all. It must have been very scary to have endured such behaviour by an elected official (assuming he was elected). I'm glad someone stepped forward with an apology, but that's not much compensation I'm sure.

I am so very proud of you as we all are here.

Thank you Daryl and Susan for being there to witness what true evil lurks out there and to give needed support to Jen.

May 14 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

How many times she called me to her side to share something beautiful---the glowing embers in a sunset, the call of a whippoorwill, or one of those rare moments when Venus draws near the new moon. How many times she held my hand to comfort me through hope and fear, birth and death, happiness and unhappiness. How many times she taught me that no one is ever alone. We are always in the presence of Father-God who loves us--no matter what might appear to frighten us. How many times she said, "You can do it!" and how many times she refrained from saying, "You'll never make it" and how many blessings I wish upon her, my mother!

I will come with my family and pitch my lodge in your camp, that mothers may see..you are under my protection.

Hello again FOB famblee

I just read on FPL's web site (the power company in Florida) that they are pleased to announce that power should be restored to our area by Friday night. For some reason, I'm not as pleased as they are. ARGH!

Also - someone called to tell me that they caught the arsonist who set all these fires. Welcome news!

I'm going to be leaving work soon to get Kaiser. I am so looking forward to taking him home but I just hope he doesn't act like a lunatic when he sees me. It's hard to manage him as he weighs almost as much as me and they want him kept quiet and calm. Denny, being disabled, can't handle him at all.

I feel so bad for Jen and Daryl - loyal FOBs who deserve to be honored, not ridiculed.

Have a great day all!

###THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR KIND WORDS!

We got treated BAD and I licked my wounds all the way home. But you know what? Now my resolve is even stronger. What better feeling would it be to defeat this. I guarantee you this. WE defeat this, I am driving to Jeff city, walking up to Wes shoemyer and telling him off, right in front of the other Senators. But first. We need all the reps to know the truth. Facts not emotion. WE can do it. Jen

I should know the answer to this question, but I still have to ask...........

What is the post time for the Preakness, and what network is it on? I will be out of town from this evening through Saturday evening, and I want to DVR it. I certainly don't want to miss Big Brown's victory........

If anyone contacts Shoemyer or his his office...or any committee members. Please, be extremely courteous and civil. Remember, we represent Barbaro. And that is one great honor.

Besides, it appears he & others will have to answer to their peers....who they embarassed as well as themselves.

Hay, FOB's!

###
Trip to AZ may have to be postponed. Family situation...got off the phone with my son a short time ago. It may be nothing - or not. But right now, the way things look, I'll reschedule. But on top of that, I am getting the strong feel that I should stay close to home...so I'm going with it (plus, money is tight right now...). Very strong feel. With all the earth "stuff" going on right now, with my luck, there would be some freak weather occuring either here or out west...

###
Daryl, Jen and Susan, tried to e-mail Mr.Shoemeyer, got a delivery failure, but will try again. I have such a difficult time understanding why mature, civilized conversation is such a stretch for some people. We all don't have to agree, but listening to other points of view can broaden horizons.

###
Read Edgar's article on the DB...and my admiration for him is growing even more. Its clear he is a very thought-full person.

Everybody have a blessed day.

NO EXTRA HAHS LIST YESTERDAY OR TODAY - temporarily suspended due to prime directive.

You may have noticed there was no extra HAHS list posted here yesterday - here's why - via a post that just came up from Daniel of the HAHS Group:

Hi all,

In case you didn't figure it out yet, the daily faxing campaign has been suspended until further notice in order to attend the special action alert released yesteday.

At this stage of the game it is far more important to press leadership to help our sponsors find a way around Craig and his foot-tapping friends than gaining new cosponsors.

FOB $1-$5 Alive Drive

Wow, we are finished with drive number 10 for Mac. We have raise over $1000 in less than 4 weeks for rescued horses. We still have a long list, but this wonderful. Thank-you to everyone for giving!

Our next drive was suppose to be for Austin at Never E Nuff Acres for emergency vet bills. But Austin's vet bill has been paid in full. So, as Dawn suggested, we are going to raise $100 for Captain, who is a special needs horse at Never-E-Nuff Acres Horse Rescue and Sanctuary.

Captain is 34 years old and was used in Mexican racing in the past. He has old fractures and arthritis and his tongue was nearly split in two by a bit. So we are going to help Captain get the care he needs.

For Paypal go to their site:

http://www.neverenuffacres.org/

You can see the donation link on the right side. If that does not work for you, please try the link at the bottom of the page.

Remember $1.50 to $6.00 if you use Paypal to take care of all the fees.

For snail mail:

Never-E-Nuff Acres, Inc.

P.O. Box 94

Waxahachie, TX 75168

Remember $1-$5 is all we are asking for, but all donations are welcome.

Please report your donation on the "FOB $1-$5 Alive Drive" thread in discussion.

We need $100 to help Captain at Never-E-Nuff Acres.

Thank-you so much for helping!

It is so touching to read about G. Jackson's visits to Nicanor. So bittersweet- bless her.

I haven't responded yet to Mr. Shoemeyer, waiting for calmness and adultness to settle in. I'd like to settle his hash- as Granma used to say!

Also just watched the HBO segment on You Tube. Heartbreaking. Just heartbreaking.

But we will prevail.

###
I am going to start and build on what I did at the ranch the night of the frat party...a chant practice to move energy to get the bills to a full congressional vote. It may be "out there" but I figure if I can handle 450 drunk/high college kids...Congress should be just as do-able. There are those who are on the front lines - me, I can do my energy work in the background. I almost wonder if those energy workers on the site should do their own practice every day...just to see if we can work energetically to clear this horror once and for all.

###
Have postponed my trip to AZ...just not a good time for me to be away.

###
oddest thing about e-mailing Mr. Shoemyer...got a second delivery failure, but I copied the e-mail address directly from his web page. Oh well, I will keep trying. I LOVE technology. It might be something on Yahoo as well. Will try from another e-mail address

Way to go Jen...Daryl...Susan...AND OUR FAITHFUL FOBS!....The old saying...worded different...DON'T MESS WITH THE FOBS!!!!!

Good Afternoon, Barbaro

Hey...read last night...that the heavenly folks were finishing up Jeopardy...wow...I was very impressed...and may tackle other games...We miss you Barbaro, we love you...and we are certainly here to finish your unfinish tasks.

Good Afternoon Family/Fans Of Barbaro

We were chosen just like Barbaro...we were chosen to speak for so many that cannot speak for themselves...PLEASE CALL, FAX, EMAIL...

When people are just plain stupid (stating mildly) that Jen, Daryl, and Susan met last night...they are so insecure...that they act like snakes on the ground..instead of being knowledge and standing up like a real man...or real person.

But we FOBS..are so much better than that...are guns are loaded with knowledge, with love, with care...and we CERTAINLY GET IT....SO...we will bombard them with emails, faxes, and calls, very dignified...but to the point...

Please remember and help our rescues, and thank you for everyone who has and is helping them...our Fallen Angels...the ones suffering human or animal, our wildlife, and always, our loving family...we all live in the House that Barbaro built.

Have a nice evening....

###
Thank God..my boss finally left for the rest of the week...lol

Janice, I think Kaiser will be fine. I had a Lab once that shattered her hock and had to have 3 surgeries (pins in and pins out). She adjusted to using 3 legs fine. She did want to chew the stitches out so the vet put an Elizabethan collar on her. she couldnt sleep at night as her head wouldnt lay flat so the vet gave her something to take at bedtime. whatever it was she snoozed logs all night. It was a 6 month ordeal -allowing time between surgeries. She was almost to geting her show championship when she hurt the leg. people said she would never show again. A year later she got her championship. I am sending prayers for Kaiser to do well and I am sure he will with the care and love yole will give him. Please post and give us a daily report as we all care.

SEE HOW LATE IN THE DAY I'M RUNNING: MERDE:
JOE FOR HUMP DAY:
******************************************************
Wednesday, May 14th... Extreme Fire Danger. Today they say 40 mile an hour winds with 93 degree temps. Right now, at 6:25 on a Wednesday morning, we are a dust bowl. Winds rock our house. In the barn 95.3 on your FM dial is turned up loud, drowning out the sounds of a hurricane. In the mare motel horses are spooked. In our fields horses on alert. Later today from a race track in Los Angeles comes a gelding, and I hope he brings a sense of humor.

Like searching for a shoe nail in a haystack, but mechanic Jay in Woodland found a radiator for the old ranch truck. Every few miles I had to stop and add water. At a junk yard Jay found a 1969 Ford with a donor card. So now we are cruising in style. No more smelling antifreeze as we head down the 505. Life is good in the boonies.

Lots of kids have been visiting from youth shelters, and one girl asks: Is that your truck? Why not just ride one of your horses to town? Do you guys even have electricity?

Allison Martino is 12, and sometimes she stays with us while her mom is in class. I had to give Allison a ride home, and she tells me no way is she getting into my old truck. It is embarrassing. I tell Allison to walk home then. Finally Allison accepts the ride, but she wants to wear a paper sack over her head.

Mike Baker tells me gasoline could be over $6.00 a gallon this summer. Mike Baker is buying a little Civic for his commuter car. His big truck will stay in the garage.

Tom Hayes tells me Yolo County wants to moniter our water wells, and charge more money if we use too much water. Tom Hayes is a farmer, and he is going to a city council meeting to protest this idea.

Horse killer Manny Phelps tells me because of gasoline he must once again raise the costs of rescuing a horse.

Stephanie Diaz tells me she just paid $4.85 for a jug of milk, and $3.00 for a dozen eggs.

Rachel Jeffers says she just paid $15.00 for a bale of alfalfa.

You have to go outside. The late night darkness makes it all better. The sounds of 105 horses. Top It Off with her broken ankle, and how she cries when you approach. Little Justin with his broken knee, standing in the corner, hoping for a tiny bit of attention. The 47 incher tells us about forclosures and unemployment. But injured horses tell us things could be worse. Horses teach us to be grateful. Cathy and I are blessed. I love my old ranch truck. Who cares if no one wants to go for a ride? All the nutty things going on in the world, but outside with horses is a feeling like no other. Outside with horses brings Peace. And as you grow old, Peace is as good as it gets.

Joe

Soon a new link on this website. Past Adoptions.

In 2007 we found homes for 529 horses. Here are 4 of them:

Top Left: We bought Jenny at auction, and one year later she goes home with Chris. Jenny was needed to be a companion.

Top Right: The gray gelding Omega Chapter gets a new home with the Preece kids.

Bottom Left: Elizabeth adopts the handsome Diddylicious.

Bottom Right: Cute Little Lola goes home with Janet.

A horse killer that rescues. God help us. Is this idiot for real?

Posted by: Renee Antaya at May 14, 2008 9:14 PM

Renee....hi...I also saw that comment re Manny the horsekiller. I took it that he is now going to charge Joe higher prices to get a horse from him for tbfriends. At any rate, it is all just awful, what is happening to so many of our wonderful 4 legged friends.

Please donate to help horses bound for slaughter in Mexico. Let's save some.

STRATEGY FOR THURSDAY MAY 15

Both the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), have the power to bring the bill up for consideration in their respective chambers, therefore it is vital that as many people as possible, both at the grassroots level and internally within Congress, insist that the House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader do everything in their power to afford the bills legislative due process and bring them immediately to the floor for a vote.

Speaker of the House - Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)
DC Phone: 202-225-4965 Fax:202-225-4118

Senate Majority Leader - Harry Reid (D-NV)
DC Phone: 202-224-3542 Fax:202-224-7327

It is our understanding that more co sponsors would certainly facilitate our efforts with Speaker of the House Pelosi and draw the much needed attention to this legislation. For this reason, we will be posting the names of Representatives that we will be targeting.

Absolutely beautiful piece about the Barbaro sculpture - amazing, the scope and depth of the research involved. But IMO the VERY best part is:

WE WILL BE ABLE TO WATCH THE OFFICIAL BARBARO STATUE BEING CREATED!!! from the below:

"Webcams will broadcast every minute of her work online . . ." [details & website below]

This is long, and sorry if it's a duplication; I haven't had a chance to look and see if anyone else put this up. Fascinating. We will be able to WATCH via LIVE WEBCAM as the sculptor creates the Barbaro sculpture commissioned by the Jacksons to be installed as part of the Barbaro Memorial at Churchill Downs.

Barbaro runs again -- in bronze

Middleton sculptor Alexa King's statue is bound for Churchill Downs

Rob Schultz — 5/14/2008 6:23 am

Federico Tesio, an Italian who was one of the greatest breeders of thoroughbreds in horse racing history, once said, "A horse gallops with his lung, perseveres with his heart and wins with his character."

Tesio had been dead for more than 50 years when Barbaro stepped into the spotlight two years ago and proved the famed breeder's point arguably better than any thoroughbred before him.

The ultra-competitive Barbaro's talent, heart and character were on display while winning the 2006 Kentucky Derby. But nothing compared to how he tugged at most everyone's emotions after pulling up during the Preakness States two weeks later due to fractured bones in his right hind leg.

Barbaro showed the same heart and character during his eight-month struggle to stay alive. He was already a legend before he was euthanized on Jan. 29, 2007.

In honor of Barbaro, a memorial is being constructed at Churchill Downs, the site of his Derby triumph. The centerpiece will be a statue, created by renowned Middleton sculptor Alexa King, that remarkably captures the great thoroughbred's athleticism, heart and character.

In many ways, the Barbaro statue also will capture what King does best.

King's model, or maquette, for the statue, "wasn't just finely detailed clay, it was clay with emotion," said Leonard Lusky, who is managing the Barbaro memorial project for Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson. "That's exactly what the Jacksons said. It evoked their emotions of Barbaro and really brought the memory of him back in."

Lusky is still gushing over King's maquette of Barbaro, which has all four legs off the ground while riding the rail, with jockey Edgar Prado aboard, en route to winning the Derby. Look closely and you can see Barbaro's tendons rippling and his mouth fiercely chewing on the bits at mid-stride while Prado's mouth is slightly open and his whip is in a mid-motion bowed position.

"You definitely feel movement. You feel like the horse is alive," Lusky observed.

King was one of 10 artists -- Lusky called them "the cream of America's sculpting crop" -- who submitted models for the Jacksons to consider. "When you saw the models side by side, (King's) screamed out," said Lusky, who added that the models were presented initially together and anonymously so the Jacksons couldn't be accused of making their selection with any sort of bias.

"It was beautiful, it was elegant, I think, compared to the others," Lusky concluded.

Attention to detail

King, 55, has been amazed by how much attention she has already received after it was announced earlier this month that she was creating the statue. Traffic at her Web page has skyrocketed and her phone rings constantly.

What people are learning is that the personable King doesn't hide what makes her one of the country's most sought-after sculptors. She tells anyone who listens that her incredible attention to detail comes from intense research.

"I do a lot of background research because I have to build this thing from the inside out. It's not just, look at something and do it. I have to make it anatomically correct from the beginning or it will never look like it," said King, who also is putting the finishing touches on a 9-foot outdoor bronze for the front of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine.

In the case of the Barbaro statue -- which will be about 15 feet long from tail to nose and about 10 and a 1/2 feet from the surface of the track to the top of the jockey's head -- King interviewed hundreds of people ranging from the Jacksons, Prado and trainer Michael Matz to people who never met Barbaro but were touched by his story.

"With portraiture, it's really important to find out how these people think and feel about this animal," said King, who knows horses well, since she owns American Saddlebreds as well as the top Hackney horse in the United States. "Mrs. Jackson told me right off the bat that Barbaro loved to race. I told her that when I did this statue of this horse, I would express his physicality, what he looked like as a thoroughbred. You need to be able to tell that's what he is from a distance."

King looked at dozens of pictures and videos of Barbaro as well as other horses. She studied a series of photos called "The Horse in Motion" that were taken by English photographer Eadweard J. Muybridge during the 19th century that proved, for the first time, that a horse's four legs are all off the ground briefly while galloping.

She also looked at the skeleton of famous thoroughbred Sysonby that can be seen at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. "They've got him running so I could actually see how it looked in the skeleton itself," she said. "I really studied to make sure the position I wanted to do with all four of his legs off the ground was the right one."

While King learned that Barbaro was 16.2 hands high -- that's 5 feet, 6 inches at the withers, the spot where the back and neck meet -- she also needed to learn how high Barbaro should be off the ground and how he should look from the back and front since the statue will be viewed from every possible direction. So she got help from Mark Markel at the UW's School of Veterinary Medicine.

"We determined that he was about foot (off the ground)," King said. "Then I talked to his trainer and he said it was more like 16 inches. So I built that into the design, that we could raise it up just slightly."

King is so exact with every phase of this project that, instead of creating the rail for the sculpture from a picture of Churchill Downs, she called the manufacturer of the rail and asked for the schematics.

Constructing Barbaro

The Barbaro statue will be too big to fit in King's Mount Horeb studio so she is going to work in a special studio near the old Greyhound station on Madison's east side. Webcams will broadcast every minute of her work online at www. barbarostatue.com.

"When I try to tell people how it's made, they look at me with a blank look on their faces. So let's just do it (with webcams)," King said with a laugh.

The project, which is expected to take six months to finish, will begin with a welder helping King build an armature out of rebar that will hold everything in place. She will then cut 4-feet by 8-feet sheets of insulation foam into the shape of the horse, glue it all together, plane it back and create the form of the horse and jockey. After that, she will start using wax-based clay -- up to 700 pounds of the stuff -- that she'll stick to the foam with spray glue.

After she's finished, mold makers will arrive from Colorado and cut the project into around 20 pieces. They'll take the pieces back to Colorado, cast them in bronze and weld them back together. King will be with the project every step of the way.

The Barbaro memorial will be located in a conspicuous spot right in front of Gate 1 at Churchill Downs. The plan is to dedicate it at next year's Kentucky Derby. "It should be a significant moment," Lusky said, "because this is a horse that captured the attention of America."

Now King is capturing the attention of artists, horse lovers and Barbaro fans across the country. Lusky said it's well-deserved on many different levels.

After the Jacksons made their initial observations without the artists present, each artist entered the room to identify and explain their work. Lusky said the Jacksons smiled when they learned their favorite model was created by one of their favorite artists.

Added Lusky: "Everybody was like, "This is perfect.' "

I think I'll hold off on any trip to Churchill until Barbaro is there....

If Nicanor gets unwrapped at Delaware, like his brother was, I will be there for it.And I bet lots of TV crews will be as well.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, I loved your response to the blog re. "What to Do with All These Horses?". You were very eloquent and factual. I loved the story about the sculptor who was selected to create the statue of Barbaro for Churchill Downs. What a detailed process she engages in to bring her subjects to life. I love the photos in my office of Barbaro's home stretch run in which all four hooves are off the ground, how awesome that she selected that as her motif! ####

To Janice & Denny: Hope that Kaiser's transport home is safe. Appalling to think of what arsonists inflict on humans, animals, and nature, isn't it?
To Skyler: I'll need to look up Summertime Promise, I don't remember her name.
To Wendy: I am sure that you had a poised response about the so-called "idiots".
To Padme: I'm sure that when the time is right for your trip to AZ, you'll know it and act accordingly. Hoping all is well for your son.
To Sandra: How are yole? How's our boy Chief doing this week?
To Ken, Daryl, & Susan: Kudos for your tenacity and grace under pressure. Some elected public officials forget that they are not "rulers for life". Sounds like our FOB, Miss Mish, will add support to your cause in MO.
To Martita: Thanks again for the lovely poem about Eight Belles and thanks to CJ for reposting it today!
To Lou Ann in PA: Your e-mail box must be full, hope your finals are over soon. ####

Tomorrow, my publishing website will be up and running. Between phone calls, I was working on it for the last 3 hours and my eyes (and mind and heart) are fried. Will let you know...because I need all of you to visit and build up my customer list...:) sheesh.

###
Things may be settling down on the home front, but the trip is still postponed till further notice.

###
As I wrote before, I watched the HBO segment. Every lawmaker in DC needs to see this. Every last one of them. But right now a lot of dense energy is being released globally - this is only a small fraction of what is happening worldwide.

Is there another trip to DC planned in June?

Have read about Erin. I'm not sure I have the words that would help. I would be coming from an energy healing viewpoint...but this is going to be a very profound time for the family and friends. Listen to what Erin is saying and watch what she does. The lessons are there for everybody. Just be open.

Many years ago, the grandson of my manager was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer. He was one of the first to be treated with interferon. Ryan Wills was one of the bravest souls I have ever known...and the wisest. We had a 30-second encounter that forever changed me. The thoughts exchanged then were ones of love and caring and acceptance. Erin is going to do something similar to everyone around her. I don't know how I know but I do.

It is always the young who teach us so profoundly.

Daryl, Jen and Susan,

I tip my hat to you three HEROES. Only a hero will stand up to indignity and humiliation with grace and dignity, as you did. I am damn proud to say that you are members of my famblee! You are fantastic representatives of Barbaro and all Horses. You bravely walked into the enemies home ground and beat him! You beat the enemy just by showing up, thus causing him to lose his dignity, pride and bring disgrace upon himself.

Thank you. I am proud to know you.

FoBs, this is what we are here for. In our own ways, we have caused this victory. Each of us contribute in many ways, and the strength of the Fans of Barbaro WILL win the ultimate VICTORY!

God bless every one of you. Special blessings and strenght to every warrior on the front lines. Remember, we are here with you, holding you up and moving forward with you.

God's blessings to Edgar Prado. Here is a man who has not shied away from the fight. He could have taken the road of "I'll lose my job if I say anything," but didn't. Mr. Prado, has risked (albeit most likely just barely) his livelihood by taking a (tactful) stand and speaking the truth. Another Hero.

I've rambled on far too long now. I'll end this with an apology for taking so much space and time and my wishes for healing and prayers for all in need.

NO Horse left behind or Ever Forgotten!
