Barbaro Updates: 583

updates are now here.

Update 3456: Chelokee remains 60 - 40 as things remain positive for his recovery. A cast change will occur about May 26: Chelokee On the Improve.

Update 3455: The Preakness loses a key contender to the Canadian Triple Crown: Harlem Rocker To Skip Preakness, excerpt:

"We really believe the horse has a bright future, and (Mr. Stronach) decided to take a step back right now," Adena Springs Farm managaer Dan Hall said. "Our next main objective will be the Queen's Plate. Todd (Pletcher) is very high on the horse and wanted to run him in the Preakness, but we almost always take the conservative approach, so we're going to be patient and stick to our program."

Update 3454: A quieter morning this morning which was very pleasant. We had a few workers and I only had four to ride. I also went up to watch a few of the workers and just generally hung out. It was nice not going a million miles an hour just trying to keep up with things! Anyway, a pleasant and easy morning's work!

Update 3453: Sunday's report for the Preakness contenders: Preakness Updates: Sunday.

HBO is releasing a story on Horse Slaughter today: HBO Horse Slaughter Story May 12th.

Please keep calling and writing.

JOE on MONDAY
ANOTHER REASON TO REMIND OURSELVES THAT WE HAVE TO KILL HS AT A NATIONAL LEVEL. SO MUCH FOR CALIFORNIA'S "no slaughter in CA" stance:
**************************************************
Monday, May 12th... All the lows, all the highs, and staying in the middle is a balancing act. Yesterday morning a large stock trailer filled with more than 20 sad horses left Vallejo, California for Canadian slaughter.

Also yesterday horse killer Wade Giles phones to say he has a fresh off the track race horse with a badly blown tendon. Jodi Tuft phones to say an auction in Roseville is pathetic. Someone left a DVD in the basket by our front gate. The note says Joe You Must Watch This. And so I get to see a horrible spill from Saturday at Hollywood Park. Miss Cozy Cat goes down in the stretch, tries to get up, and you can see how she suffers. Miss Cozy Cat is put to sleep, and I wonder why anyone would bring me this DVD? I have watched a 1,000 horses die on the race track. And now we are up to 1,001.

All the lows, all the highs...

In our dusty barn, scooping poop, and Key Maker rests his head on my shoulder. A long journey with a badly broken sesamoid, but Key Maker is almost healed.

GET OUT THERE. GET CALLING.
IF NOT US, THEN WHO?

Good morning everyone,

Start the week off with tackling our list for today, and ask everyone you know to help.

Jan, all in our household are praying for Kaiser right now, and will continue throughout the day. Please post when you know more. Bless you today on such a difficult day....we're all with you.

Posted by: Skyler at May 12, 2008 2:26 PM

It's Monday at New Holland...the doomed horses are waiting for the start of the auction. The Kill buyers are checking out the pounds of flesh they intend to purchase shortly.

Please make your calls today out of respect for those who only have a few hours to live.

Remember Rockpile and Impeach Willie. They didn't deserve to die.

Barb!
Wow: you raised those children right...I love it: a fly mask for your new filly...children thinking of the comfort of another living thing besides themselves...good work, girl.

ALSO: Don't forget the HBO special with the Bryant Gumbel segment on horse slaughter is TODAY 10-11.
The HS segment is just that. A segment. too bad they couldn't devote an entire hour to this....but little by little, we're getting there...

Kudos to all who were involved on that end, or sitting at their 'puters, helping ransom those horses out of harm's way.

Good Monday Morning,
I hope you all had a nice mothers day. The SCR herd thanks all the FOB's for the hugs, kisses and peppermints.
I took my usual stroll to say hi to each and every one and spend time with them. The weather was perfect.
Hans and I saw each other he started to nicker so loud he made me laugh. I went into the paddock with him wrapped my arms around his neck and just stood close to him, he was so warm and smelled so good, I could feel and hear him breath. It was wonderful. Then I walked to the other side to get his food bucket, he was watching me, I called him and he came to me. I started to go back to leave slowly and I could feel something, he was right behind me with his head at my shoulder, I looked at him and gave him a kiss. I kept walking, when I got to the gate door there he was again, he put his head on my shoulder. I almost cried, he is just beautiful..I really love him. I kissed and hugged him and told him so, he looked at me with an incredible look like he knew and feels the same.
Then we hear this wild loud whinning, we have a new little guy who decided he really had the hots for one of our mares, she let out a scream, he goes flying screames and that was the end of that, he was put in his stall where he continued to thrash and scream for BB. The whinning went on for the rest of the day between the two, they were so funny. Sammy is a little hottie, and as cute as can be. As the saying goes he was feeling his oats.

Good Morning Barbaro,
Happy Monday. I love you!

Thanks William!

We have another girl who was a PMU mare, she kept a distance from people, she was not sure what they were about. She had never been touched the first three years of her life. Her adopting dad has been spending a lot of time with her before she goes to live with him and his family. This weekend everytime she saw me she came to greet me and spend time with me, she wanted to be touched. A total 360,it is an incredible feeling to see them come around. We have worked with her for some time. When she came to us we could not even touch her. Now she truly knows the meaning of a kind loving hand, and the people she can trust who love her.

Theft of equipment in KY

Saw this on the Kentucky Horse Council website this a.m. Thought I would pass the word. If you see this equipment please contact the Kentucky State Police

Lazyday Stables in Harlan Co was broken into early Wednesday morning May 7, 2008 and 5 saddles, 1 pair of spurs, and a bridle were stolen. 2 of the saddles are custom made and very unique. There is an open case on them with the Kentucky State Police at post 10, the number to call with any information is 606-573-3131, and Trooper JT Whitaker is the investigating officer. These 5 saddles combined are worth $5,000.00. Here is a description of the saddles:

17” Ricky Green Cutting Saddle-Med Oil (Slick Seat, has Ricky Green (TX) Stamped right in the seat)-Not a very common saddle to see in these parts. I have sent pictures of this saddle too! This saddle will retail over $2,500.00

151/2” Bob Loomis Reining Saddle by Saddle Smith-Light Oil (Has NRHA on the silver and Bob Loomis in the silver plate on the saddle horn. This saddle has a 3 way cinch and congress concho’s) value at $750.00

151/2” Ranch Saddle by American Saddlery-Light Oil (Has high back with white leather trim on the back of the seat, has a big horn for Roping, removable bucking roles and has DD brand on the Stirrups that is 1” in size. Valued at $1,100.00

13” Youth Big Horn Brand Cordura Saddle-Brown has nylon back girth brown to match the cordura material of the saddle. $400.00

151/2 Buffalo Team Penning Saddle-Med Oil (It’s in ruff shape, but is a good colt saddle, has ruff-out seat with buffalo silver plate in the seat, and rawhide saddle horn. This saddle also has a DD 1” brand on the stirrups. $250.00

The set of spurs that were taken were on the saddle horn of the Ranch Saddle, they are stainless steel, with spur straps that are Med Oil with silver bullets around the straps with a Bucking horse concho on the side. There is a DD brand and the inside of the spur straps. New, these will run over $100.00.

Any information should be given to the Kentucky State Police. These saddles will most likely surface at Horse Sales, Tack Auctions, or may be sold outright. Darryl & Michele Day of Lazyday Stables greatly appreciate your help in this unfortunate situation.

Update re Chelokee from Rood & Riddle

crossposting from the DB (thanks Lawrek2)

http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=23557.17

Hi All, just got this e-mail from Rood & Riddle on Chelokee:

Dear Bill & Karen,

Dr. Bramlage reports that Chelokee continues to do well 7 days post-op. Blood work and temperature have been normal so far with blood work scheduled to be repeated today. The usual concerns are infection and whether the short period of reduced vascularity had any effect on his skin or foot that resulted in the soughing of any portion of either of them. The danger threshold is 10-14 days. We will know more after his first cast change (done at 2 weeks post-op). The best news is that short of being able to see under the cast right now, Chelokee has done everything right so far.

That’s the summation of Dr. Bramlage’s report. My summation is less medical and more personal. I have been to the stall to visit him. He is a very charming horse with lots of personality. He has received several gift baskets from fans and I can confirm that he loves peppermints and carrots.

On behalf of Chelokee and all of the staff here, thank you very much for your prayers!

Robin Murray

FRENS OF TB FRENS IS TRYING TO FIND HIM AN AFFORDABLE "new" truck to help haul feed and hay around the ranch....becoming a member of Frens of TB Frens is EZ!!!! (PS Toyota trucks that they are looking at have many, many miles, and are el cheapo...)

In our dusty barn, scooping poop, and Key Maker rests his head on my shoulder. A long journey with a badly broken sesamoid, but Key Maker is almost healed. At our front gate a fancy car, out of place in our poop on top of poop setting. Mom and daughter spending a Sunday together. The daughter is 13, and she says her name is Alicia. I say no way. She says yep. I say this is so weird, because in a few hours Cathy and I get to see Alicia Keys sing. The daughter is hardly impressed, as she would rather talk horses. I show her Pony Boy, and she takes his picture. I show her Paradise Cove, and she starts to cry. I ask Alicia why are you crying, and she says sorry. But sometimes horses make her cry. She tells me horses give her a tingly feeling inside her heart.

Feeding supper, and Limo dives into his grain like I dive into Rocky Road. And I hate to leave, because I know Limo will go to the gate and wait.

I tell Cathy paramedics parked outside Arco Arena are there for me. The oldest guy in the crowd. So close to the stage Alicia Keys spits on us. For more than 3 hours I am not with horses. Alicia Keys plays the piano, and everyone in the audience knows all the words to her songs. Everyone except me. Her voice has taken over my brain. No more Wade Giles with blown tendons. No more visuals of Miss Cozy Cat going down in the stretch. Alicia Keys says walk the path that inspires you.

It is the path of horses that inspire me most. All the lows, all the highs.

On this very windy Monday morning, coffee is from Dunkin Doughnuts, and chocolate cake is made by Pepperidge Farm. We might be 80 degrees. Later this week our first heat wave, and we could reach 100. Flies are rubbing their tiny little hands together. Broken water floats all over the joint.

Joe

Then And Now...

Top Left: I bought Harry from a feed lot, and he was in miserable shape.

Top Right: 45 days later, and Harry is coming around. He loves peppermints and carrots. Harry holds his right foot in the air when food approaches.

Lifetime horses on our ranch:

Top Left: This is Ponderos Leader, he is 14, and his wife is Darryl Hannah.

Top Right: Im A Jewel is also 14, and in 1997 he won The California Derby. His wife is Holiday, but often you can find him with his best bud Bandit.

We also have a big high pressure front slogging through and ironically, it makes the day sunny (but chilly still) and it also delivers the left side head pain I have lived with to a lesser degree now (thank you old age) since I was 17.

EXTRA MONDAY 5/12 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List is now posted below and at this DB Thread:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=23591.1

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen. Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB Thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:
ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Monday 5/12/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! Go get 'em.

As Jack Tripper used to say on Three's Company, Lordy, Lordy, Lordy !
I am so talked out from all this today, and I don't get talked out easily!

Lots of calls to make today, and please God, it will get the word to our recalcitrant Congress on what the citizens want on horse slaughter!

Maribel, I'm sorry I got Snowy's gender wrong last night, but I do send my best wishes to you in a tough time.

Janice, prayers for Kaiser's health, and prayers for you to have grace and comfort.

Bless all you who are doing the good work for our horses. Thank you Barbaro Jackson, and much love.

Hi everyone, found this today. It's simple, just name and state, and you've signed a petition to get eight bells to toll for Eight Belles before next years derby # 135. I think it's a nice idea, hope they get enough attention to make it happen. I got this link from Bloodhorse so it looks like a legit thing they are really trying to get done. The intro is great, and the meaning behind the name Eight Belles makes me weep. Ironic. http://8bellsforeightbelles.org

VERY SCARY:
This from a dear friend from college, who is a Bureau Chief at a major DC paper...I sent her the release in RealSports...

Needless to say, I sent her a VERY LOOOOOG note.
She is one of the smartest, most politically astute people I have ever know, and SHE is confused about what is what in the horse slaughter wars....

We just cannot stop pushing, in as many media, in as many ways as we can. I don't think, personally, we will EVER be able to let our guard down.

People don't WANT to know such terrible things happen to an animal like a HORSE>People just don't want to know such terrible things HAPPEN at all.

We cannot look away. IMHO, and I love all you guys, to look away is to dishonor those horses that die every day, every week, every hour.

I believe (and yes I am an opinionated and stubborn--word rhythms with WITCH (cough cough))
We don't have to wallow in it, but please, please, please, try to watch this special. I don't think they will get into slaughter tapes, but for me, seeing IT put a sliver of glass in my heart that will never stop propelling me forward to the day when our horses are safe.

Lub you all:
you will do what you can, that's why I lub you: jonna

Posted by: jonnagrey at May 12, 2008 10:54 PM

CRIMINALLY: i FORGOT TO POST MY FRIEND'S QUOTE:
**************************************************
I thought the horse slaughter ban was part of the Farm Bill. Was it taken out? The Gumbel press release indicates that no slaughterhouses
remain in the U.S. That's good news, isn't it?
***************************************************

SORRY: just in a little fury here....xxoo

Hay, FOB's!

###
In spite of the cold and rain, I was at the ranch today. The boys were wearing their blankets...it was THAT cold. Lucy came home from the hospital and is resting at home...and under strict orders to rest and ONLY rest (yeah, right...). I talked to her today and she is tired...but, for now, OK.

But the boys were great...even in the rain, we had a great time. I figure it will be very hot in AZ and that heat will burn away any cold I may catch. Will get to see the boys one more time before I leave.

Will listen to the last 2 CD's of the energy worker to see if she mentions animals again. She has a lot of info that I certainly relate to.

I have to share with yole--because very few people HERE understan--that my sister/brother/excellent, beautiful young and jet, patent leather black greyhounds whom i slated to go to the BEAUTIFUL home of a guy and his partner and their two Himalayan cats....these two little knucklehead greys passed their cat test administered by my excellent friend, Webster, the cat-in-a-dog-suit. Most excellent.

Made my night, he sat in my lap uncertain as to whether he should bite my fingers and drool on me, or present His Most Excellent Kitty Butt to the greys. He bewitched them.

Had to share....with people who would understand.
i lub my FOBS.

I am so excited about this RealSports segment. I hope to god they had the stones to give it to the people...god, we need this so bad.

Re: the HBO segment. Packed a lot into a small segment. Very powerful...gotta let it settle in my head, now that my heart is slowing down. As often as I have seen it, it is new with rawness, and horror everytime I see them die. And my beautiful White Mare...jesus, keep her close to you tonight please.

It will be interesting to see what shakes out of all this. They certainly hit it hard. God bless us in our work. Bless the women who stuck their necks out and stood up for the horses they saved, and for the memory of those they could not save.I also love that greyhounds were also mentioned.

I hope the people I asked watched it. My sister the horsewoman's line is busy...I wonder if she watched. She has never seen slaughter...

It's not just "unfortunate." It's REAL>
