Barbaro Updates: 575

updates are now here.

Update 3422: Michael Blowen, at Old Friends received this e-mail and contribution:

Hello. My name is XXXX, and I am 11 years old, and I won money off of Eight Bells at a Derby party yesterday. I feel so bad about what happened to her that I can not enjoy my money that I won. So, I am going to donate my winnings to your organazation and so is my mom. I found out about you on the internet last night. Your farm sounds like a very nice place. I am asking everyone that I know if they also won money off of Eight Bells, and if they would like to dotate their money as well. Some people that I am asking are donating money just to be nice. So I just wanted to let you know that as soon as I collect the money, my mom will send you a check. From, XXXX

Michael also informed me they have just taken in a barren broodmare, Richard's Lass. She won the Geisha and the Pimlico Oaks.

Update 3421: Dr. Richardson will be on the following shows discussing the Derby:

CBS Evening news tonight at 6:08pm

CBS Early Show tomorrow morning

CNN tomorrow morning b/t 6:00am - 9:00am

Fox News - 9:15am tomorrow morning

Update 3420: Big Brown appears in good order after the Derby: Dutrow After Derby: 'The Horse is Good'
. He may be facing an entirely new cast of characters in the Preakness: The Morning After: Big Brown Scare Off.

Off back to the races at Woodbine.

Update 3419: A little chaotic this morning. We were a couple of people short which creates a little havoc with the schedule. I think I ended up riding six. They went nicely. I hotwalked a couple and did other various odd jobs. With people short you just have to pitch in. A few people noted they saw the horse slaughter article in the Toronto Star, and now know a little more about me! Good conversations. Of course Eight Belles was also discussed. Andy Durnin texted me from Churchill. He said Larry Jones was fielding lots of questions from reporters just outside of her stall. Just very sad.

Update 3418: Eight Belles.

Update 3417: My initial reaction to Eight Belles' tragedy: Was the Track Too Fast?

Update 3416: Eight Belles ran her life out. Big Brown won (very impressively).

Update 3415: Some better news for Chelokee: Chelokee Update: No Fracture, excerpt:

"It was just a dislocated ankle that was put back in order," Matz said May 3, on the morning of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Matz will saddle Visionaire in the Derby. "The skin was not broken which is a good thing, and there was heat below the articulation, which means there is blood flow. The ankle will probably have to be fused. He had a good night. He ate and laid down and got up several times."

Off back to Woodbine to help Jen with a handicapping seminar (remember my picks). Then to help out with our paddock schoolers.

Update 3414: A little lighter this morning with only six to ride at Woodbine. Five before the break and one following the break. All the horses seemed to train well and are doing well here at Woodbine. During the break I pulled the mane of one of our horses who is running this afternoon. Queen of Dreams, a first time starter. She stood there very relaxed. It was not until I had nearly finished did I realize she was not even tied up! I finished up the morning getting bridles ready for our paddock schoolers, we have five to school today as well as two runners, and then walking the pony who is temporarily housed in another barn. A nice pleasant morning, but we will be busy this afternoon!

My latest entry on the Rail which offers some insight into what the Derby contenders will be doing today before the race: Getting a Horse Ready on Derby Day.

Update 3413: Today is Derby day, here are my picks and analysis: Alex Brown's (Slightly Biased) Picks.

This is what the Derby horses did yesterday: Daily Derby Notes: May 2.

A great article on the issue of Horse Slaughter (Cover story Toronto Star): Battle to save horses from slaughterhouse, excerpt:

Zito's wife Kim will greet Little Cliff at their farm in Kentucky soon after the Derby. The horse has been in quarantine since being saved from the slaughterhouse.

"Nick and I were sick when we heard the story," Kim Zito said. "When we got over the initial shock of it, our sadness turned to anger. There are still some people in this game that don't care.

"The horse should be treated with dignity and respect. They fight with heart and soul so that we can become, rich, famous, successful and, hopefully, get that picture in the winner's circle.

"We need to have a little compassion and say, 'Thank you.' "

for the highest good..
she said..

..for chelokee and michael matz

..for all trainers who saw it happen
and quielty returned to their barns
to look
and re-check and re configure--did they miss anything?
eying their prized ones
..dreams awaiting
.tomorrow

.where
does the rain fall but also
deep into the ground
pools of mud and sand
mix in with the ants
and twigs of little nests
melt eventually into fissured rock
somewhere there will be moss
and tendrils followed by fresh roots
holding hands underneath
.these earthen mounds

way above
there is thundering hooves..
meet this all with love
she said--
meet it all with love

.the lessons tumble out faster then i can wipe the tears away
and then have to laugh about the plans cast now aside tonight
because it is here again
..that pain and doubt of faith
but
why
him?

with the feverish updates
and looking for facts about broken front legs ankles .
.thin legs

it has been another tumultuous day in our world

beginning with a sweep of images evoking Barbaro
.trembling flashes of what was
even the blue blanket .
.elegant heavy cotton
drapped over muscles just about formed

in a complete choreographed atunement of power and heart .
we see
it is to come ---

Nicanor
first dazed and then
a dozen frames later,
sad and bewildered eyes
looking into his lens-from his pristine new stall no
humid heat
very bright,
no
here for him is .cool canadian air
filled with maryland farm scents

different sounds
maybe a bit homesick
for his friends and groom

i re learned today
then from his soulful curious so
intelligent eyes
as if i was invading a very sacred and private place..
that i might just be a tad selfish
to want to know his every move
top to bottom -maybe a t premature

he looks so much like the full brother of Barbaro
how can it be ..so long ago and yet so now

but also i feel his deep innocence
and i want to protect him from ANY eyes
that do not have his best interest at heart
and who would best know that
but his trainer and his owners?
the divine above?

to return their gift of Barbaro to us
we can weave a large circle of light and surround him
with the love--un conditional
that sets those boundaries
of spirit and respect
for his growth to flow
un- interrupted
by the flash of celebrity
that disease our country eats and sleeps in

of time--that is timeless free to learn and roam

animals have taught me since childhood
to respect their energetic boundaries
..respect their right to grow and become
on their own time
not of mine or anyone else's

just 24 hours ago the jacksons made their ultimate
gift and sacrifice
to share their beloved barbaro with the world.
.to commit his ashes to the very public holy grail of american racing
churhill downs

and they deserve the respect and privacy to live their lives in peace
that nicanor and lentenor
..may grow in their own time
protected and given the space
to become who they may become.

amidst the near tragedy today tht is what i re learned
no greed but to say\
thank you thank you
for all you have given me

.they deserve the safe and sacred space
to learn and be who they will be
the accident of chelokee
..that this is one message i get
from this near tragedy
..they both riding to the hospital in the ambulance together
can you imagone to re lvoe this?
..trembling in the dark
whispering no words but sweat on the brow and hidden tears

..the strain on michael
and the need to support and be a presence for healing
for them .
.we all have that in us..
count me in

this large circle
has held such joy and such terrible sorrow

tonight i hold them
them
so dear
and let me
be the first to let go
of any expectations
not to add to his or theirs
of nicanor;s or lentenor;s burdons
in any shape or way

now
protect them SO
grace and great heart can grow .
the life they deserve

to flourish .

from time to time
it will be wonderful
to see their progress
i will be there
when they come to the gates

may no shadows be cast on the rigor of their lives already so full

tonight that is what i feel
in the hanky that i hold close
soaked with my own tears
of regret for the pain held today
amidst the joys too
cast not any shadow on that golden path
they so richly deserve
that would be then my reward

in this frenetic energy
accidents will grow and happen
and as chelokee sleeps in his hospital stall
may michael and he
..feel our love and prayers
that visionaire
not feel
michael;s deep distress either
may he follow our love
to his own destiny -

may all horses return to the finnish line
safe tomorrow
. for that i pray
with all my heart

we all have lived through dark times
and now again we meet
we are called to do the best our hearts can offer

step it up
no matter what/
count me in

the hay--its deep woodsy scent of suns past

,the soft and very silent breathing
of new flowering trees
and the rich green carpet of kentucky grass
..let them sing
let them sing..

Reposted from last night.....

THISGOODPLACE UPDATE !!!

THISGOODPLACE3: THE TIME TRAVELER, has just been posted on the DB under the BARBARO thread.

I post it on the eve of the Derby to honor "the rose-runners."

I hope that the Frens will like it.

Here is an excerpt:

The diamond sand covered their hooves, as they walked. It lightly flew up and dusted their legs, tails and bellies. The more they walked, the more luminous they became. They sparkled as the sand sparkled. They trailed swirling streams of color, kicking up stardust, and the sands of time, as they walked.

...to be continued

I know that we are all praying for a safe flight on Derby day, and for many more ACNs for CHELOKEE.

The Prayers, and the Love of the Frens will make the difference.

I'm up early, can't sleep. Thoughts of Chelokee, Barbaro, Michael, Nicanor, the Jacksons, the horses running today... all seem to be swirling around in my head. A big traffic jam between the ears!

Hoping and praying that our fren Chelokee had A Comfortable Night, that the blood supply to his injured leg was not compromised, and that the dawning of a new day finds him on the road to recovery...slow and steady wins the (important) race!

((((((((((CHELOKEE & MICHAEL))))))))))

Safe home to ALL brave horses who put hooves to track today ~ especially those running in the slop at Louisville. On or off the board, may they all finish safe and sound...THAT is what matters to me!

Wow, what a great article in the Torontao Star. I like what Alex said about more "high profile folks" have to get involved in the antislaughter fight. Go Alex!!!

Of course, prayers for Cheekolee and for all running today anywhere in the world.

Sugarcreek 5/2/08

tonight
i may have ransomed
a kind death for
a blind foal at auction.

i--along with
so many others--
have helped ransom
mustangs, tbs,
nursemare foals,
pmu foals,
accident victims,
abuse victims.

Frozen babies in Minnesota--
determined to live.
Starved horses--
determined to live.

Pintos,
buckskins,
Percherons,
Belgians,
ponies,
mules and burros.

Vet bills,
feed bills,
round pens,
clean water,
grass.
Simply grass.

Barbaro's
baby
carrots.
Dear God.
Carrots.

But tonight:
a kind death for a blind foal.
It is a new low
for me.

Me--who has
taken the lives of
so many glorious
racing greyhounds.
Watched the light of God
extinguish in their eyes.

Held them in my arms,
given them the good death.
What we all want for our
beloveds.

But tonight: not my
task. I was not there.
Good and brave
Trojan women
fought for the rights
of horses
beloved by someone--once.

And that foal? I hope
he was loved at last
held and loved at last.
It is the
least
a human can do.

Chelokee Update: No Fracture
Northern Dancer winner Chelokee sustained a dislocated ankle in the Alysheba Stakes.
Photo: Churchill Downs/Reed Palmer
Centennial Farms’ Chelokee, injured during the May 2 Alysheba Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs, sustained a dislocated ankle and not a fracture, according to trainer Michael Matz.

“It was just a dislocated ankle that was put back in order,” Matz said May 3, on the morning of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Matz will saddle Visionaire in the Derby. “The skin was not broken which is a good thing, and there was heat below the articulation, which means there is blood flow. The ankle will probably have to be fused. He had a good night. He ate and laid down and got up several times.”

Initially, it was believed that Chelokee had suffered a condylar fracture similar to that sustained by Matz-trained Barbaro in last year’s Preakness Stakes (gr. I). Barbaro eventually was euthanized due to the effects of laminitis.

Matz said Dr. Larry Bramlage would examine the 4-year-old Cherokee Run colt Saturday to determine the exact extent of the injury.

Chelokee, who went off as the second choice at odds of 2-1, was running fourth in the race before he took a bad step and fell at the top of the stretch. Jockey Ramon Dominguez was examined at the track first-aid station and cleared to return to the jockeys' room.

“He was traveling absolutely perfect," Dominguez said. "I had the best horse in the race. I was just trying to pick my spot and as soon as he got to the top of the lane, he switched to his right lead and broke down. There was absolutely no contact.”

The race was won by Giant Gizmo, who went off at 5-1, scored his first stakes victory in the Alysheba.

Hallelujah on the news about Chelokee.!About as good as we could hope for. Now, for all the runners today to stay safe!

I was on my drive home from the grocery store and NPR ran a Scott Simon interview taped earlier this week with Edgar Prado. I was misty-eyed all the way home. The audio should be available at npr.org around noon today.

Off to get ready for my Derby party.

Good Morning Famblee,
I have some good news this morning! I just received permission from Lyn Lifshin to "break the news!" Our dear friend Lyn has had a new book of poems selected to be published; this will be a special book for many of us. It's about our favorite Lost in the Fog! Lyn told me that more news about it will soon be on her website (www.lynlifsin.com), as well as news about a book she's written about "another terribly beloved Horse" we all love. Her LITF book will have a cover illustration of LITF by Pat DeLong too. Keep an eye on her site for more news.

Happy Derby Day!

I think Barbaro and Frank Whitely got together and did some intervention on behalf of Chelokee. BIG sigh of relief today--things look much better.

But I am sick to hear that the track will be slop again today. Not again. Please not again. After yesterday's news, I haven't been able to get Gorgeous George out of my mind.

A new low? Or an act of tremendous compassion and love? Sometimes the best available choice isn't the optimal solution.

SATURDAY AT TB FRENSSSSS:
****************************************************
Saturday, May 3rd...
Tis the season. Spring brings horse related injuries, and the list grows longer. We send our very best wishes to Jodi Tuft with a broken leg. Jessica Talbot with a broken nose. Jennifer Wright, and she is learning how to eat with her left hand because she fractured her right wrist, and the cast is obnoxious. Wendy Wainwright lost a front tooth. Stephanie Diaz needed 6 stitches above her eye. Fred (Fred is a girl) has an injured leg. Robin an injured shoulder. As her trail ride came to an end our little friend Kaitlyn was smacked in the face by a tree branch. She saw stars. And poor Ryan has to wear a slipper because his horse stepped on his foot, and now two toes are the size of Pony Boy.

A fast recovery to all of you. Horses can be goofy after a long winter.

And we have a ranch full of goofy horses. Every female in season. Every gelding thinking they are Seattle Slew. All night through open windows come screams and stampedes. Neighbors quickly put out their For Sale signs.

It is horses who take center stage. This weekend there are horse shows. Trail rides. Camping trips. Riding lessons. The Kentucky Derby. More horse shows. More trail rides. Tomorrow a food fest at Cache Creek, and riders will dine on barbecue salmon sandwiches. Red potato salad. Baked beans. Apple pie. Their horses eat cookies and carrots. A big party in Dixon tomorrow at the ranch of Jodi Tuft. Everyone is invited. Both today and tomorrow should be a beautiful 80 degrees. The winds have stopped. Flies are gunning their engines. On our ranch every horse needs a bath. Poop on top of poop. Later today another gelding will come to us from the race track. And Georgia Hartman will transport Turbulent City to his new home in Davis.

We also send our best wishes to Lesley Ann who lost a foal, but her mare is kind and willing. If you know of someone who needs a nurse mare let me know. The mare is located in Sebastopol.

Have a safe and happy Saturday.

Joe

Currently 109 horses on our ranch, and more than 50 are lifetime residents. Here are 4:

Top Left: The pretty filly Halo, and she came to us in 2006.

Top Right: Hottie, and he came to us in 1997.

Bottom Left: Jag, he was a lesson horse, and he moved here in 2007.

Bottom Right: Sizzle Butt, and she was born on our ranch in 1999. A big pet.

Good Saturday Morning, ABR Famblee:)

Jan:) Thanks for that 'blue-inking', I've posted on the DB...Happy to be a part of this GREAT IDEA of yours!!

I am completely and utterly ESTATIC to read that Chelokee didn't have a fracture!! I am sorry, as it seems his leg/ankle will need to be fused, so I assume his racing days are over...but at least he can go on in this life of his and 'just be a horse':) I'll continue to pray that as he heals from his surgery....the dreaded 'L' word is NEVER an issue for him!

I'm so SORRY to read of the weather today for this, the 134th Running of the Kentucky Derby:( Rain/Rain and more Rain:/ SLOP!! Dear God...SLOP!!

Yes, Harriette, I'm with you, my SisterinbArbaro...if the peeples don't feel 'good' about allowing their horses to run...then SCRATCH them!

I pray for God's WHITE LIGHT to surround ALL HORSES and their RIDERS this day of such IMPORTANCE...Let them run like the winnnnnnnnnd, LOVE every moment....and Dearest God..PLEASE bring them ALL SAFELY HOME!!! Amen

Everyone, enjoy this day. I know 'alotsa' parties will be taking place everywhere...so much 'tradition' today for so many peeples...the horses have no idea what's up....they will simply be doing what is asked of them...just like they always do:) GOD BLESS THE HORSES!

I won't be watching, I will record....check here first then watch later on...I'm partial to four today, and not necessarily in this order:

1) Pyro, because of our own Mike C.:)
2) Big Brown, because we share a name together:)
3) Visionaire....well, duh!!! :)
4) Adriano, because of unklealexbrown:)

update from Linda last night about Belle and George:
**************************************************
she is doing so great..she is barely sore ,and a real trooper during her bandage change and medication...george is not pleased to have mom away on the cross ties for an hour..she just stands and carries on while looking out the stall at me and her mom...she just whinnys and acts as if her whole world is over ..it is quite funny ,and then when belle returns to the stall she heads straight to nurse like she hasn't had anything to eat..like she is trying to make sure the milk bar is still there..i do not think she cares about belle just belle's milk bar..

Holding our beloved BARBARO in heartsong today and always. May a touch of the 'diamond dust' that he left in his wake, touch every horse who runs today.

May the prayers and the Love of the Frens make a difference...

###Fren Sophie, our dear BUTTERFLY BELL ran yesterday. The following is from my post of yesterday, concerning that race:

BUTTERFLY BELLE came in 6th in her race today. It was a $25,000 claimer at Bay Meadows. She "settled early and failed to rally with no response."

No one claimed her.

I hope they will listen to her now. This little mare doesn't like it out there. She wants to stay home, and be a horse. She needs a loving family, and an honorable retirement.

God Bless and keep you, BUTTERFLY BELLE.
God Bless and keep you CHELOKEE.
God Bless and keep the Derby runners safe.

They are all so beautiful; full of courage and heart...the most exquisite and perfect of His creation.

HURRAH AND HALLELUJAH FOR CHELOKEE ~ no fracture...that's the best news I've heard in a long, long time! And I'm sure Michael is breathing a sigh of relief as well...

GOOD NEWS FROM CHURCHILL DOWNS (as long as it doesn't rain again)...I watched the first race at 11 am, and the announcer said the track had already dried up considerably since he showed up at 7 am....pray like mad for good weather and for ALL the brave horses!

Angel Barbaro ~ my heart is so heavy with missing you today! I watched the video of your subliiiiiiiime performance on this, the second anniversary, and yet sometimes I feel that your real subliiiiiiiime performance was the courage, heart and intelligence you displayed in your fight for life, and in your ability to gather around you a famblee who would be willing to fight on for the benefit of ALL HORSES!

I love you and miss you sooooo much ~ BARBARO, CHAMPION OF MY HEART!

Nancy

Watching this:
Barbaro;
so beautiful
cropping
the
bright spring clover,
admiring the cows,
making Dr. R laugh.

This still makes me feel
as if there is
a steel band around my chest.

Roy Jackson
unable to speak about
the moment of death.

Jeanine
Gretchen,
Dean, Edgar,
Roy, Sabina,
many who loved him
had their hands on him
everyday.

All had to let go in love.

Will I ever be able to
watch this and not sob.

I will ever be glad
I lived in his time.
But I will ever miss
what might have been,
and just be content
in the work we were called
to do in his name.

Posted by: jonnagrey at May 3, 2008 6:04 PM

Oh dear Jonna and Dee, I am finding much comfort with yours, and everyones words here today.

"I will ever be glad I lived in his time". I have thought that many, many times.

Lyneeeeeeeeee - I like your faves and the thinking behind them. :)

And now...........Dry, Slop, Dry!

May God sprinkle heavenly Pink 8's all over that track.

Better news about the track! Be safe today, be safe today. Wishing for good judgment for all hoomans who are holding horses' lives in their hands today.

I think I have 20 favorites in today's race.

Good news about Chelokee! We will continue to pray that his surgery goes well and he heals well. Not much sleep worrying about this boy.

Barbaro, just saw your HBO special for the second time. You were and will always be the most brilliant, beautiful and talented horse. We will always respect you for the strength and determination you showed on and off the track.

We miss you and love you so much.

Greetings from Singapore. I have been on planes for 24 hours, and the first thing I did upon arrival was to check in here when Igot to the hotel. The shock of hearing about Chelokee was heartbreaking, but as I read through, the news is so much better today.

ESPN here has baseball on, so imagine the disappointment after thinking I might get some preliminary coverage. Everyone's postings here and on the forum as to the derby goings on have special meaning to this lonely FOB today.

May all horses run safely today. I just hope Eight Belles runs a little faster than the boys today.

Posted by: Lisa Leach at May 3, 2008 6:41 PM

Am with you, Susan 20 favorites. All wonderful. Maybe a little leaning toward Eight Belles. She's a girl, the number Eight in her name, her trainer, MR. JONES ( no relation, at least that I know ) her rider, many reasons to bet but I won't. I'm just afraid that the 20 pole is too much of a handicap for Mr. Big Brown, but hafta think of him too. Wouldn't it be something if he DID pull away? And of course, my heart is with Edgar. And all of our furless leeder's boss's horses. wow This is so nerve-wracking. Just praying for a dry, pristine track and safety for all. I'll breathe again when it's over

Love you Chelokee!! Miss you Big Bay Five-Year-Old. It's all about you and your SUBLIIIIIIIIIIIME PERFORMANCE!!! Thank you for making this all happen, Barbaro. Love you soooooooooooo much

Just came hear to see "NO FRACTURE" up top - and OMG how happy can I be! I am so relieved - and again, imagine how Michael must feel - to know this BEFORE the big race today -

Martita's poem really did me in bigtime; I read it just after watching the HBO Barbaro Documentary for essentially the first time (previously saw it with a friend on a small BxW TV) so today I really watched it fresh - and I must admit I was surprised how emotional I got.

Gearing up for racing today - calling Missouri and leaving VM's, and sent the Mo action alert to a slew of non-FOBs.

Hope everybody's hanging in there - ttyl -

Our own Naughty Nutmegger Cub Reporter, Nancy in CT, posted this on Forum about Chelokee:

GREAT news this morning....NO FRACTURE!!! "Just" a dislocated ankle, which will likely be fused in a few days.

And Jeannine Edwards on ESPN just reported that Dr. Bramledge was "thrilled" with Chelokee's progress overnight...he had to give him an orange traffic cone to play with in his stall because the little devil was so frisky that he was trying to get his IV connections out of the ceiling!

HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY...Michael must be sooooo relieved!

Lisa, you are not alone today!!!!!!!

Could this be a filly's Derby? A filly's TC to win??

Posted by: Susan E. at May 3, 2008 7:25 PM

oooooooh if only, Susan. Maybe Ruffian could shine a little light on Eight Belles today, to honor her dear trainer who joined her in hevvin :)

Posted by: Cheryl Jones at May 3, 2008 7:27 PM

Chelokee should meet Jonah at MHR he also loves his traffic cones. As a matter of fact Jonah plants one on his hay all the time to indicate it is his. :)

May 3 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Living catches up with us quickly when we let everything become drudgery. We stop learning. We quit looking with interest, and we stop being aware of our own needs and feelings. Everything becomes routine and nothing is new on the horizon. We blame far too much on age. Age has little to do with the blue fog we let settle over us and the things we usually care about. It is our lack of energy brought about by our lack of vision. It is a lack of interest that dulls memory. A ga yv li, the elderly, are held in high regard in all Indian tribes. They have to remember so they can tell the young----and they would tell us to watch our mouths so not to speak negatively. They would tell us to renew our vision. They say our potential is unlimited and we will know when something or someone lights our candle.

What is life? it is the flash of a firefly in the night...it is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the Sunset..

Tammie, thanks for asking about Chief. He isnt having as good a day today as he did yesterday but still doing fairly. sleeps most of the time (does presidone (sp)? make the dogs sleepy.? Is very listless also. Hay, he still passes the cookie test. ###jonna, you and I should have been vets as we would just offer them a cookie and if they passed they were fine, no need for tests and heres the bill. jonna, I almost cried when I read what you wrote about holding the dogs when they were put down. I have done that many times and it just rips your heart out. I had a 12 year old Lab once that was asleep by my chair one night and he just got up and fell over. had an angersism 9sp)? burst. It was easier as I didnt have to call and make the dreaded apt. ###didnt mean to get so morbid here -guess I am just depressed today. The blind foal and all the others just make me dedicated to working harder for Barbaros legacy.

Sheeeeeeesh...questionable "mystery posts" appearing again....It seems as though J---, the stalker, may be rearing an ugly presence again ???

Beware Dear Frens. This sorta smells.

Even in the most peaceful of pastures, a smell upon an ill-wind may give cause to stamping and snorting.

As the Dark-Bay-Oracle, who's very name means "beauty," would say:

"Such wind is not from the breath of God. It has a smell, but no real power. We must turn our backs on it, making sure not to breath it in until it passes."

well, it took till the actual running of the Derby to maybe make this sport sit up and take notice. Barbaro's accident wasn't enough, no they had to keep the tradition. Look what happened at the Bredders Cup with Pine Island. Churchill Downs has had too many accidents at that track. Get it fixed.

Damn she did so great. She beat the best males but one--and loss her life doing so. I think it was Dark Star who broke down during the homestretch during the KD.

I'm glad her jockey wasn't hurt and that no other horse was involved. I think it happened while she was galloping out--maybe Alex has some insight here that we don't.

While they didn't have a choice and they did the humane thing it is still really sad. I'm glad that we didn't see it on tv.

Oh God Eight Belles, I'm so sorry. May the angels speed you to heaven and happiness, but I'm just so mad here on this earth when this continues to happen to our horses.

When will the Kentucky Derby people SPEND A LITTLE MONEY AND INSTALL SOFT SURFACE SYNTHETIC TRACK?
How many horses have to be injured and killed? Even soft surface doesn't stop injuries and the breeding needs to be looked at too.

Out of 20 horses in this race, 20--yes 20--are descendants of NATIVE DANCER.
One of my all time favorites.
But that is breeding for speed, and there is a
flaw in the genes for the legs and feet( so I read)
Barbaro had Native Dancer blood too. Almost all of them do now. Native Dancer is the first horse I ever loved, really loved. But couldn't some breeders look for some genes for stronger legs.
I guess the money element wins every time.
I'm really hurt and discouraged as you see, so I hope I'm not upsetting anybody worse. We have enough heartache today already.

Poor beautiful Eight Belles; RIP Dear Girl! Horse racing should be BANNED, as it is NOT a sport! Horse racing is all about human greed, and it is BARBARIC!

Posted by: Donna at May 3, 2008 11:52 PM

The sad thing is, I don't think the racing community will make much of this- much like it paid little attention to George Washington when he died. George didn't win, Belles, didn't win... and that's all this sport really cares about: good payouts and big wins. This will be glossed over with much efficiency-

that is, unless the world refuses to LET the racing industry forget about it. I would like to see SO much anger over this, but I already know waht the genral public will remember: "Big Brown Won!!! Likely Triple Crown Winner!!! there was a small accident after the race... and Big Brown Won!!!"

So sick.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at May 3, 2008 11:55 PM

Sorry Barb (AZ) but you are wrong, we need a lot more than a bunch of stupid internet candles.~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Barb, you never even watched horse racing...or did most of the peole who blog on this site.. ....I gave up posting long ago because you are all so self righteous and judgmental....but Barbaro, Eight Belles, and on average of one horse per day would not have died if horse racing wasn't so corrupt....Japan doesn't allow horses to race with drugs...the derby was run on dirt when polytrack is available, prestious trainers go on even when they are caught drugging horses, with minimal fines and they direct their assistants by phone... horses are bred for speed only, and not to have solid legs; horses should not be raced at 2 years old... if any of you really loved horse racing you would look up the history when horses typically ran for years becacause of the way they were bred...you all are supporting part of the problem... we all should be attacking the horse racing industry where most of the unwanted horses come from...not the AQHA, which is equally evil in my opinion....Barbaro, and Eight Belles died because of rich people. if the Jacksons really cared they would support more responsible breeding, and the end of drugs in horse racing in America....horse slaughter is just an economic end....it won't stop until you cure the sources of the problem.

I donate a lot of money and my time to horse rescues, so dont' say I dont' do anything...but passing the anti horse slaughter bills will not cure the problem....there are too many unwanted hroses....education and affordable euthanasia are more directed to actually curing the problem...If I look at what you all have accomplished it is to create a worse hell of death for unwanted horses....aren't you so proud!!!

Posted by: Renee Antaya at May 3, 2008 11:58 PM

Alex, could you please shed some light on this.

She seemed fine and then collapsed after the race. Did she get hairline fractures during the final stretch? What would cause both ankles to have compound fractures like that? Did her jockey push her too hard? Do you think filly's should run with the colts? Does it strain a filly too much? Rags To Riches was damn lucky in last year's Belmont.

I don't understand.

Posted by: chris byers at May 3, 2008 11:59 PM

Remee,
Amen!
It is a rare sport where the death of a contender is forgotten in the midst of cheering, trophy presentations and general celebration while the corpse is carted away. I noticed that they got her body off the track in time for the overhead shots and presentations, which is necessary if you want to hide the embarrasing truth.

Posted by: JackieTundra at May 4, 2008 12:01 AM

I just read her jockey said he noticed as soon as he stood up (cross the wire) she was galloping funny and he tried to pull her up. Instead she went down.

Posted by: MJ at May 4, 2008 12:01 AM

I watched the race; I saw her trapped in the middle of the pack for awhile, and then come bursting through, and accelerate...running beautifully...and then not accelerating. Could've been her jock realizing she wasn't going to make it so why push. Could've been her feeling the first problem. Did not see the fall--they'd gone to the person talking to Big Brown's jockey and apparently it happened right then.

I don't believe it's a gender issue that fillies aren't "tough" enough to race with colts; I think it's a matter of size (her 17 hands) and the dirt track. In free herds, fillies and mares outrun the boys all the time. It's no harder on them. They cover miles just as well; I've ridden a mare that could go for hours (used to run around the acre paddock for half an hour--just for the heck of it.) But when you breed for speed alone, you get taller and thinner, longer bones that aren't as thick for their length as in shorter horses. And fillies tend to have less bone than colts--something that doesn't matter in the natural horse, running free across the prairie, or in shorter fillies where the weight-to-bone ratio is more normal (normal for TBs, anyway.) Very tall fillies are probably more at risk than very tall colts, and both are more at risk than shorter horses, but I doubt that's a factor at 16 hh and under.

I know most people will concentrate on the gender thing, but I think the track should factor in. We know now there are more life-threatening injuries on dirt tracks. I don't give a flip about tradition when it comes to horse welfare: Churchill Downs should change its surface. So what if it means new Derby times can't be compared directly to old Derby times...if it saves horses' lives, that's what matters.

I've cried. I've smacked the wall. I'm going out to pet my two old geldings and cry some more. What a beauty she was, and how bravely she ran!

I bet on Eight Belles. I thought she was a "sign" for me. Barbaro wore number 8 the in the Derby. Barbara was inspiration through a grueling reconstructive surgery and beyond for me. His postcard was by my bed in the hospital. All of the sudden eights appeared everywhere. I was in the eighth presurgical waiting area. My surgery started at 8:08 and many many more. Eight has been my lucky number ever since. My doctor often calls me Bella. I thought Eight Belles this is a sign from God. Just before the race started I prayed outloud please let everyone just finish safely, please. OMG Did I send her bad thoughts. By thinking something bad could happen, did I make it happen. Did I jinx her. OMG sweet girl I am so sorry. I can't believe how strongly you ran, just less than an hour ago, now you are gone, just like that. And everyone there in attendance just keeps smiling and they act like nothing happened. WTF, I am sick to my stomach. I am so so so sorry my sweet girl. Something has got to change, this is sickening.

### Dear Fren Bobbie B,

The NATIVE DANCER "curse" on the modern thoroughbreds is something that I have believed in, and lamented for a very long time. It goes back to JOHN O'GAUNT Via his two sons, BLENHEIM and SWYNFORD. It has also come through the descendants of SPEARMINT.

Hopefully, with just a few more generations, more careful breeding with more and more light being shown upon this factor, the tendency for brittleness will be bred out.

We may only pray that tragedies such as this, will increase awareness in the TB world, and that SOUNDNESS will prevail over SPEED in the breeding sheds.

Right about now, I need alot of shoulders to lean on.

Posted by: Ken Z at May 4, 2008 12:10 AM

I remember yesterday after the Oaks there were several track workers smoothing over the dirt over and over again, and Jerry Bailey pointed it out and said- look at that. It might be sloppy on top but they're packing it down. *That's gonna be like concrete tomorrow, you just watch.*

And I remember, very briefly, thinking- oh, sh*t, they're pumping it up for a "big show." In 2001 they packed the dirt like concrete so a certain horse (Point Given) could put on a show- he didn't- but by all accounts it was fast as hell and hard. A really nice surface to run a fragile-legged animal on.

Posted by: JackieTundra at May 4, 2008 12:10 AM

Dear Fambleee
please, let us help each other. it's to terrible to think about right now without feeling anger and a horrible sense of futility. Have been sobbing for an hour now, wondering how such a tragic injury could possibly happen to a filly in such superb condition and training. I have my opinion, of course, but am no expert. maybe we can draw together as we have so often in the past and figure out a way to convince those who need convincing that the tracks must be made safer.

I watched the last portion of the race over and over and saw nothing wrong with Belles. Am interested to hear what her rider has to say. I'm so sorry for him, for Larry Jones for Fox Hill Farms connections and anyone who loved this beautiful filly. What a terrible turn of events.

Can't take anything away from Big Brown, and Kent Desormeaux. I'm sorry that the victory will be tarnished by this horrible tragedy. Everyone connected with BB showed a lot of class in acknowledging the terrible accident. I'm pleased that the local news station has not let Belles' passing go without mention.

Famblee, we're going to take this very hard. For me, it's partly because Belles reminded me so of Ruffian. What a brutal irony. Another big strong dark bay girl. The other reason is I know that there can be much done to minimize injuries and deaths. Maybe we can pull together to do whatever it takes so we aren't facing heartbreak so often

I don't deal with tragedy well- it often makes me angry. Especially when the same stupid sh*t keeps happening over and over again with an industry I keep trying to embrace. It promises to be doing better, improving conditions for its horses and being very humane, then it kills another horse on prime time and shrugs- oh, well! That's horse racing!

I mentioned I get angry when things like this happen. I try not to get too crude. It's not easy. I'd like someone to pay for this, I'd like that very much. I think this sport deserves to pay for its death toll.

What a tragedy, losing Eight Belles--after finishing second. I am in shock. Don't know what happened or when it happened????

Big Brown--truly impressive. So exciting to see him pull it off.

All of the horses that race are heroes.

chris,
I noticed it, he was very special and left his mark on the world. We will never forget #8.

Big Brown ran beautifully, Margie, but I was wondering if they talked about him being the one with "bad feet" before the derby (like whoever it was they were talking about had bad feet?).

he was gorgeous, but the girl was definitely giving him a run. she was strong the whole way.

Otherlyn, ####
Do you think there is really a chance that they will learn, and care enough to breed away from the brittleness? Or will they just keep gambling, while it is the horses that have to pay up.

I hope , dear fren, that you are right! I hope and pray they will see and breed away from it. Maybe more light will be shone upon this as you say. From your lips to God's ear. :>)

Cheryl, that was a very insightful post. I am impressed that you can keep cool during a time like this. Some people cry, some people stay calm, some people turn into belligerent asses (cough*me*cough). I'm having trouble thinking clearly, I'm mad and I don't know what to do about it and that makes me angrier. I'm glad that the connections of Big Brown were respectful (they didn't pull a Frank Stonach at the tropy presentation) and, well, I don't know what else to say- except I hope this sport gets kicked in the balls by some very angry female viewers :)

Eight Belles was a good, beautiful creature with a lot of soul, a lot of heart, and she was reduced to a corpse lying on the dirt in front of a cheering crowd. All I see is her lying there on the first turn, alone except for the few people who were at the scene, the television cameras staying as far away as possible so as to avoid the tragedy. That's all her life amounted to in the scheme of a party atmosphere- a casual casualty. She menat so much more. She was beautiful.

Michael Matz and Edgar Prado are such class acts. I feel sure that they paid their respescts and condolences to Belle's people. Her trainer was too distraught to comment and her grooms I know are crying too.

Yes, Lisa, Big Brown had the feet issues, but he also has a white spot, just like Barbaro. And Big B and Big Brown are very distant cousins.

Thanks for answering.
