Barbaro Updates: 575

updates are now here.

Update 3412: WJZ (Mike Schuh) from Baltimore on Nicanor's arrival at Fair Hill: Barbaro's Brother Arrives In Maryland.

Update 3411: Hall of Fame trainer Frank Whiteley has died: Frank Whiteley Jr. Dies.

Update 3410: It looks like Chelokee broke down today in the slop at Churchill. Chelokee Update-4:39pm.

Update 3409: The Rail's contributors make their Derby selections.

Update 3408: A wet and blustery morning this morning at Woodbine, and for the first set it was hold on to the neck strap for me ... twice I had to let it go as I was launched air born! Luckily I landed back where I needed to land and survived all the "excitement". We had eight sets altogether, and four of those went to the gate. That means some waiting around as the gate does not open until 8:30 am and my fourth set was complete by 7:30 am. During the hour break I helped sort out one of the feedrooms and cleaned a couple of the racing bridles. Odd jobs to keep things going. Anyway, today was a morning of survival, and I survived!

Update 3407: Friday and its Oaks day at Churchill: Country Star aims for third Grade 1 win in Kentucky Oaks.

Here are my two most recent entries at The Rail:

Big Brown Sizzles; Smooth Air Is Slow

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George and the rest of the stellar gang in Equine Heaven.

For them:

MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY MAY 2

PHASE II OF OPERATION “CRAIG”…. From the National Horse Protection League

Senator Larry Craig - famous for misbehaving in a different kind of stall - is using stall tactics on the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.
His threat to hold up Senate consideration of the bill (S.311 by Sens. Landrieu and Ensign) is putting thousands of horses in danger of ruthless killer buyers who want to buy horses at auction and haul them to Mexico or Canada for a gruesome demise.

Tell your Senator to Stop the "Larry Craig Stall.”
Please use the remainder of this week to complete “Operation Craig”. Call your own Senator, especially those that are supporters, and ask them to Stop the Larry Craig Stall!!

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!

Thanks again for all that you do!

Good Friday morning FOBs - TGIF!!!

Wow - Derby day tomorrow. Wouldn't it be nice if we could get some anti-slaughter publicity during the TV coverage? But, since that's not the case, we continue to follow the marching orders given to us.

Have a great day everyone!

I wrote this last year, thought I would repost for Derby Day!!!

First Saturday in May 2007

The 134 th Running of the Kentucky Derby

The twin spires of Churchill Downs still silhouette the Louisville skyline
The crowd will be large
The festivities week long
They will come from all walks of life
Rock stars and country music legends
Athletes and movie stars
Sheikhs from foreign lands and red neck country boys
The Queen of England and ladies of the evening
Bourbon will flow and spirits will be high in more ways than one
A mint julep in a silver cup
Hats of every color and size
From the most elegant designers to baseball caps
Designer dresses and cut off jeans
Armani suits and tank tops
Handmade Italian leather shoes and flip flops
Nothing quite matches the Ky Derby
A great day at the races
The infield crowd will be wild and drunk and loud and fun and none of them will see a horse!
Robyn, do you remember the infield ?
Everything will be the same and everything will be different
Martita, what about the heart of the matter.
Where will our hearts be ?
Be sure not to miss it
For we who have been called WILL see
When the horses take the final turn
Look ahead!
The Bay is back!
He has searched the crowd and sees his mom in the charcoal suit and black hat
He pulls out, fluid motion, four hooves, none touching the ground
Flying without wings
Fierce grace, muscles rippling, coat gleaming
The pink saddle cloth #8
The blue and green silks of Lael stables
DO you see?
Mike C we wait the call
We are in that time of here and there, this world and the other side
We hear again it’s all Barbaro
We witness the Zen of of horseracing
Edgar astride the ride of his life
The horse of his life
They cross the finish line jubilantly
The wide smile of the man from Peru
We are, without realizing, on our feet
Screaming
This is our moment
Forever in time
The Race
Welcome to the Light.
This little light of mine
I’m going to let it shine, let it shine, let it shine,

Beautiful, Harriette - I remember that from last year - thanks for re-posting. And now for my contribution to this Board sharing your daily words of wisdom from the grandfathers . . .

May 2 Cherokee Devotional

Is it true if we get past this one hard place, all our problems will be solved? But each day has its share of such places--if not in our lives, then in the lives of those we care so much about. We are so interchangeably connected that whatever touches one of us touches us all. A ne lv to di, one strong effort, one day at a time, one step, one question, are we reliable? Or do we get other people to cover our tracks so that we can go on doing what we want to do? When a hard spot, a habit, an addiction dogs our tracks, it is because we have not made up our minds to turn around and face it. Trying to make it acceptable only robs us of what we need most of all--to love ourselves and to respect ourselves. But we cannot do it alone. Only the Great Holy Spirit, and He alone, can give us the power.

The Great Spirit does right. He knows what is best for His children.

Lucky you!

Good Morning Gang.

I don't know the story of Mr. Candy. I will read it later. I must run to go to church, light candles for each horse, plus I made a appt. with the Priest. I'm going to ask him to say a blessing at his 5:30AM mass tomorrow that every runner is safe in the KD. This church welcomes animals, from hamsters to steer.

I'll call stallman Craig again before I leave. See you later.

Latest from Legacy: last night. Mr. Heartbutt (yes, he has a big white heart on his butt...) is now in B&G's stall, many changes, lots of foot wrapping, soaking etc etc....
******************************************************
well today has been quite the day i am tired and had to configure a whole new routine for everybody doing my best to not upset anyone..who do i turn out who do i soak who do i medicate who do i make wait on the cross tie whose stall do i clean first ..and on and on and on... but considering everything going on everyone did magnificent..belle realized today that it was her son heartbutt ..i got tears in my eyes at the reunion..george was never much less excited about it,but belle was extremely happy and heartbutt started sucking when she was next to him....they were separated by 4 feet of course but he knew that was his momma..as much of hard work as today was it felt so right ..so perfect and i will never forget this day as long as i live..i am pooped and headed for bed..i mashed heartbutt tonite again and he is on cam..if anyone suspects anything that resembles colik call me...he has been down alot today and although his temp is normal he has only pooed 3 times since 8am..so i need to keep an eye on him..he seems to be okay but drawing up the front legs a bit so i wanna watch him and make sure he is feeling okay...he has not been on grain since the show only hay and water and today he had a little bit of grass in the paddock we built for him..he has not had any grass for 3 mths...so i would really like to keep a close eye on him...so if anyone is up to watching i sure would appreciate it..

Prayers--as always for the Legacy connections and residents.

crossposting from the DB [from Susan E]:

Anti Slaughter Issues - Starved Horses story--media opportunity

23010.1

http://www.ksdk.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=145398

This story aired tonight on Channel 5, KSDK, St. Louis. Mike Bush, co-anchor, reported. It's about horses being abandoned and starved in KY and elsewhere due to food prices, AND features the KY Equine Rescue! Slaughter is NOT mentioned.

Last year reporter Jennifer Blome of this same station replied to me after the MO Horse Heroes accident and said she wanted to cover the slaughter story. I sent her a lot of info, but never heard back.

This is a very good opportunity to get some coverage in a fairly large media market. Please help!!!

And would someone please blue-link this on Comments--I've never learned how.

Thanks!

JOE ON FRIDAY, LIKE A MULTI-COURSE DINNER:::::
**************************************************
Friday, May 2nd... Allison Martino is 12, and yesterday she had this to say: Geez Joe, one more horse and Animal Control will close you down.

But you should have been here in the winter of 2002. We had 164 horses jammed into our 30 acres, and the rains would not quit. It would take more than 4 hours to feed. I would go inside for a sandwich and dry clothes, and then start feeding again. There was a stallion named Tomkins, and one time he kicked and a large bucket of grain actually exploded in my arms. That bucket of grain saved my life. I tell Allison Martino 109 horses is easy. Especially in good weather. But Allison is no longer listening. She is sitting on the gray gelding Devil Badgett, and I am left telling myself my own stories...

There was a period in 1998 when we were down to 54 horses. I had time to walk in the grapevines with my dog Beans. I watched every Clint Eastwood movie. Often more than once...

more to come

Hi all. I have never posted on the main board before. Just wanted to alert you of this rescue effort s there is not much time to raise the funds. Thank you.

We are working quickly to pull an OTTB mare at Sugarcreek today. She is 9 years-old and her name is Yvonne Goes On. She has temporary placement while a permanent place is found. There also may be the possibility of pulling 2 babies, but placement for them must be found before we start raising funds. Rachael is working on it.

We need $800 to secure her freedom. $75 match still on the table from Lisa. This includes bail and transport. Not much time on this, so please help if you can. Thank you!

Please paypal donations to Rachael at kennyp67@hotmail.com

AND THE REST OF BREAKFAST WITH JOE:
***************************************************
And now I am going to tell you about a third grade class in Coachella, California. Coachella is quite possibly the poorest community in all of California. There are 20 kids in this class, and they collect old water bottles and soda cans, and then cash them in. The kids send this cash to Cathy and I. One little girl brings in a bag of soda cans every week. Not long ago we received $17.00. Yesterday it was $25.00.

The kids have started a horse wall. Pictures of horses at Tbfriends. Pictures of kids who love horses. Pictures of adoptions. Other classes gather at this wall to discuss horses.

One day next week I will devote the entire morning journal to this third grade class in Coachella. The kids sent letters, and they drew pictures. Lots of horses runnning through grass. Lots of different colored barns.

Can you imagine? These kids have not much. Yet they collect money for our horses.

I think about little Alice Bento walking the streets of San Francisco, asking strangers for money to help horses. And how proud Alice was at our front gate when she handed me a thick wad of one dollar bills.

I think about Kristy in Vacaville, who went around her school begging for money. Kristy asked other kids for a buck, and that night she brought us $63.00 and told me to go buy grain.

Cathy and I thank the third grade class at Valle Del Sol Elementary in Coachella, California. And thank you for putting up a horse wall.

Enjoy your just right 74 degree Friday, and be sure to hug your horses. Anything is possible...

Joe

I'm going to try this one more time...'cause my first post 'disreppeared'.....

Alex!! 'Good Grief Alex Brown'!! (pun intended) I am happy to read you survived being 'airborn' TWICE this morning!! For me, just being on the ground close enough to the horses to kiss and hug them is PLENTY...I cannot IMAGINE being 'up' or for Hevvins' Sakes being 'airborn'!! :-0

The 'blue ink' thingy by your 'The Rail' didn't 'take'....there is no link for us to follow.

I also thought it was absolutely WONDERFUL that Mike Rea was there to witness this whole beautiful occasion, as well! I think THAT is reallllly COOOOOOOOOL:)

Sandra: Always VERY happy/relieved to read that *CHIEF* is eating and enjoying that special canned food from the Vet:) Hope he is continuing his journey to wellness this morning! I posted awfully late last night, Sandra, that Murphy is all packed up and ready to come live there..he gathered a few of his favorite toys and his doggy bed...he's waiting by the front door!! He heard there is an unlimited supply of Nilla Wafers at your house....he's READY TO ZOOOOOOOOOM right there!:)

Colonel John a major find
By Ed Gray / 134th Kentucky Derby
Friday, May 2, 2008 - Updated 20m ago

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - As Bill Casner focused his attention on a horse they were selling at the 2001 Keeneland November sale, his wife became mesmerized by a broodmare that was scheduled to sell right after their horse.

“She was this huge, black, beautiful mare that was snorting and just had all this fire. I kept saying, ‘Bill look at this mare,’ ” Susan Casner recalled yesterday morning at Churchill Downs. “He kept saying, ‘Uh huh, uh huh,’ and kept watching our horse.”

After reminding her husband about the eye-catching broodmare, Susan became convinced her husband would buy the daughter of Turkoman as a gift.

“He comes back after the sale, and I had this big smile on my face and said, ‘Well? Did you buy her?’ He said, ‘Who?’ I said, ‘Did you buy that big, black, beautiful mare,’ and he said, ‘No, but I don’t think she sold,’ ” she said.

Having seen the disappointment on his wife’s face, Bill Casner went out and bought Sweet Damsel in a private transaction for $65,000. She subsequently was bred to Tiznow, the two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner who stands at stud at WinStar Farm, the Versailles, Ky., breeding operation owned by the Casners in partnership with Kenny and Lisa Troutt. On March 4, 2005, Sweet Damsel produced Colonel John, rated second at 4-1 in the morning line for tomorrow’s $2 million-added Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

“I was waiting for a colt that I could name after a very close friend of ours,” Susan Casner said. “When this baby was born, he had the same fire his momma had, and he was big and black and beautiful and I said, ‘This is the one.’ Thank goodness, he’s turned out to be a great horse and has Col. John’s fire.”

Colonel John, the human, actually is Lt. Col. John Geider, a 28-year veteran of active and reserve components of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army. The 52-year-old Dallas native, who serves as a personal assistant to Kenny Troutt as well as maintaining his reserve status with the Army, served seven months in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2005.

“He’s served his country so long. This isn’t just about Col. John, it’s about all service people. He represents every single man and woman in the service, and we appreciate them all,” said Susan, who resides with her husband in Flower Mound, Texas.

Colonel John, the equine, truly has honored his namesake, having won four of six starts, including victories in the Grade 2 Sham Stakes and the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby in two starts this year for WinStar, which also will be represented by Court Vision in the Run for the Roses.

“What I’m really looking forward to is a winner’s circle trip with these folks,” said Lt. Col. Geider, while expressing his appreciation for the honor of being the namesake of a serious Kentucky Derby contender. “You never know if a horse is going to have that kind of talent, and as he’s developed his skill and talent, it has been hugely exciting. It’s almost indescribable.”

During his Iraq tour of duty, Lt. Col. Geider served as chief of intelligence for the Army corps of engineering activity.

“They had the responsibility of overseeing the reconstruction of the Iraqi infrastructure,” he said. “Unfortunately, it was a tough mission because every time we built something, something blew up.”

Colonel John also will be faced with a tough mission of his own in the 20-horse field for the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky-bred colt will be asked to run on a conventional dirt track for the first time, having run on synthetic dirt surfaces in all six of his starts in Southern California. His “bullet” workout, five furlongs in a sizzling 57 4/5 seconds, on Monday suggests that he will handle the Churchill surface over which his sire captured the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Win or lose, Susan Casner already has won respect for her eye for a horse.

“Bill keeps telling me to go to the sales with him and says, ‘Could you just go and walk around and see if you get that feeling again?’ ” she said. “I’ve been several times, but I’ve never had that feeling where the horse and I communicate like I did that day when I saw Sweet Damsel.”

Renee:) I WISH my feet had 'springs' in them, especially TODAY....I'm TIRED...

'STOOPID', too, 'cause I thought unklealex forgot to 'blue ink us a link' up top of this page to his 'The Rail'.....I saw the (:) colon, and thought he had forgotten to link us....oGosh! I'm so sorry/embarrassed....:/ It unfortunately didn't occur to me to 'see below'!

Lonnnnnnnnng day for this ladeeee y'day, another one today.....and keeping in mind, though I write like I am 11 years old..:) when writing about the HORSEYS....I'm here to 'tellya' I'm NOT eleven..especially TODAY! Isn't it time for bed yettttttttttttttttt???

Did yole see my post last night....upon arrival home y'day afternoon....on my paver walk to my front door...a RATTLESNAKE....alllllll stretched out lazing in the warm sunshine!! OMG!! At first, I hoped it might be a Gopher Snake....they look almost exactly the same....but this little boy/girl had it's tail up off the paver...shaking those rattles to let me know, I AM NOT A GOPHER SNAKE, LADEEE!!!

I gave it a 'wide berth'....if it had been coiled, I wouldn't have even THOUGHT to walk past...but I came into the house and called THREE neighbormen before I finally found one at home!! He came, with big boots on...:) I was wearing sandals!! And his shovel....I was a little sorry re: the snake dying...but I sure don't want them in my YARD!!! The 'wild' is fine...but NOT MY YARD!!

Thing was, by the time I was able to reach someone to come help....when I went outdoors again, the snake was GONE...but we found it..'hiding' near a big flower pot by my front steps...ohmygoodness!!

He/she is in my freezer in a plastic zip bag..and in a few days, I'll bury the head very deep so no other critter will come upon it thinking it might be 'tasty'....:-0

I do love living here in these foothills of No/Ca, but sometimes this 'country life' can be a bit 'heart-stopping'!!!

I must zoooooooom...have a great day!

Here in southern AZ where I live when we see a rattlesnake on our property - we call the fire department and they come and remove the snake safely and relocate it within 1/4 mile of where it was found. They usually don't come back and this way the poor snake doesn't have to pay with its life for wandering on to someone's property. Perhaps you should check this out with your local fire dept.

Trust what you feel around others even if it seems strange. Be aware of new learning opportunities as well. You also may become more aware of scents and aromas. Snakes are also symbols of wisdom, healing and change.

I have set up a "storefront" on Cafe Press. Its on my WIKI page and I'd love to have the FOB's be the first to check out what I've got for sale. I took the two most striking illustrations from "Cassidy" - the cover and the picture of Illusion and Mira and there are a number of products for sale.

www.cafepress.com/nomtara

There will be more products added including guided meditations as soon as I figure out how to put my words onto an mp3 file (any computer experts, please contact me. I've wanted to do this for a while, just didn't have the down time to work on it...).

Everybody have a wonderful day. Tomorrow I will be at a Paso Fino show outside Gettysburg. Sunday is at Tim's barn.

Did try to run down the hall today and all 4 legs went out and he landed on his stomach. He has a hard time walking on tile. Still staggers sometimes when walking and sleeps a lot. All in all he is doing okay thanks to all yoles prayers and candles.

Candles are lit for all Derby furbabies. The Priest is keeping them in his Mass tomorrow. We also talked about slaughter. This is with him as well.

Calling on Divinity to help the horses.

Lyneeeeeeeeee - the rattlers are around here for about 3-4 weeks starting at the end of June. I leave them alone. During their active time, the dogs are not allowed out between 9AM and 6PM. If I am out during that time, I walk heavily, stomping mostly. They are not agressive unless cornered. Last year I had one under the front deck. Every morning I watched her head out in the same direction. In the afternoon she returned around 4:30. Like she had a job or something!! Anyway, one day she came home with a large black beetle atop her back. The beetle stayed on as they disappeared under the deck. The rattlers do help with the mice and pack rats, and sometimes they become food themselves for the coyote and ravens. It's the natural circle of life in my area and I don't interfere. 'Cept when I see humans looking for them for their skins. Then I'm all mouth. I understand the fear you have. My dogs are vaccinated for snake bite. It cuts down on the amount of muscle damage if they are bitten. I prefer not to be bitten, but if I am, I just want to get to the hospital within 6 hours. I have had to learn to live with them because I have no one to call for help. A sad moment is when I see a raven flying by with a snake in its mouth.

I know. I'm loony.

EXTRA FRIDAY 5/02 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List is now posted below and at this DB Thread:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=23030.1

Though it's late in the day - if you can, pls make the calls and leave VM - or fax. THANKS - sorry to be so late today.

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB Thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:
ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Friday 5/02/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! GO GET EM.

Hi everyone; Another breakdown! I am sorry, but I agree with Renee, I had been involved in horse racing for nearly 20 years and got out, it is not a humane sport, they do race too young and the January 1st birthday for all is ridiculous! These horses have no say in what is done to them, they are at the mercy of humans.I don't mean to step on toes, but let's be real about it.It's all about money for most of them.

Posted by: barbara g. at May 2, 2008 9:57 PM

Wend,
It has nothing to do with respect it makes you wonder though...why not? Too many injuries for no reason when it can be avoided. Other sports have changed for that reason just to protect the athlete. Well the jockeys and horses need to be protected as well, it can be a dangerous sport. We all get upset and the onset is usually not ment it is just shock. Thanks for talking back, I have seen your video it is wonderful.

Read the book I told you about. the author is a former well known jockey who is fighting for the jockeys and horses and their safety. He got banned for his efforts.

Thanks!

Grade 3 winner Chelokee suffered a condylar fracture in his right front leg in the Alysheba Stakes (G3) on Friday at Churchill Downs.

Chelokee was stabilized with a splint and shipped to Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington.

“He appears, on first exam, to have a [right front] condylar fracture that then affected the stability in his ankle,” said Larry Bramlage, D.V.M., chief of surgery at Rood and Riddle. “That’s amazingly very similar to what Barbaro had, only in another leg.”

Michael Matz trains Chelokee for Centennial Farms. Matz trained 2006 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Barbaro, who broke down in the Preakness Stakes (G1) and later died due to complications from that injury. Chelokee won the 2007 Barbaro Stakes at Pimlico Race Course a year later.

The four-year-old Cherokee Run colt won five of ten starts and earned $384,125.

Chelokee was ridden by Ramon Dominguez, who is scheduled to ride Monba in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1). Dominguez walked off and escaped serious injury.

The Animal Welfare Institute has just learned that the Missouri State Senate will consider a resolution as soon as Monday, May 5, urging the US Congress to block passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA) and facilitate the construction of new horse slaughter plants on US soil.

Missouri Senate Concurrent Resolution 35 flies in the face of public sentiment and reason. The AHSPA, introduced as H.R. 503/S. 311, is an important animal protective measure that will prohibit the slaughter of our horses here or abroad for human consumption around the globe.

This resolution, clearly shaped by the pro-horse slaughter lobby, is chock full of misinformation and scare tactics designed to unnerve federal legislators and prevent them from taking action to stop America’s horses from going to slaughter. It refers to the “Horse Welfare Coalition,” a group founded and currently run by the slaughterhouses, which consists of only pro-horse slaughter organizations – including the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Equine Practitioners, and the American Quarter Horse Association.

If passed, the resolution will be used to press our legislators into allowing the continued slaughter of our horses at the hands of a cruel and predatory industry that does nothing to help horses (as the resolution’s authors would have you believe) and everything to hurt them.

Be sure to let Missouri’s Senators know that the Horse Welfare Coalition and the sponsors of this resolution are out of step with the states of Texas, Illinois and California (which have already banned horse slaughter), as well as more than 500 horse industry groups and leaders, equine rescues, veterinary organizations and the majority of Americans, all of whom support passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. (For a comprehensive list of supporters, click here).

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Please contact the Missouri legislators listed here today and Monday morning, asking them to OPPOSE Senate Concurrent Resolution 35. You do not need to be a Missouri resident to call, as this resolution, if passed, has the potential to impact horses and horse owners from across the nation. For additional facts about horse slaughter, click here.

Please share this AWI eAlert with friends, family and others, and urge them to email in opposition to any resolution or statement opposing the AHSPA, too. As always, thank you for your help!

Hi Famblee:)

Gosh, I am VERY sorry to read here about Chelokee...and pray he will be fine!!

Isn't this type of injury, perhaps a 'talking point' for synthetic surfaces, if in fact, he has stepped into a hole.....gosh, I truly hope he will be alright, I am sorry for him and sorry for all his connections.

Thank goodness its what you thought with 153, and hopefully will not be too bad. I suppose it can be controlled just as human thyroid is- with pills.
So glad to hear and sending prayers for 153.

Praying also, like you all are, for Chelokee. Its just devastating to hear. Poor Michael also- let's
hope that it turns out to be minor or not so serious as we fear.
Frank Whitely- I guess Ruffian will greet you in heaven. RIP.

Good night everybody, and good night Barbaro, our Kentucky Derby boy. We miss you so.

VERY COOL INFO REGARDING THE HUGE IMPACT SECRETARIAT HAD ON THE RACERS IN THE DERBY from Linda in VA
on the DB:
*************************************************
Many of you know I'm a fool for Secretariat (it's a sickness really). This being the 35th anniversary of his Triple Crown victory and record setting Kentucky Derby win (and BOY do I feel old!) I decided to do a little research.

Of the 20 horses entered in the 2008 Kentucky Derby 11 are descendants of Secretariat, through his daughters Weekend Surprise (5), Terlingua (4) Secrettame (1) and Sister Dot - who? (1).

Thought it was kinda interesting, of course it also shows the influence of AP Indy and Storm Cat as leading sires.

He loves the pres. meat food but if he wont eat eat eat the diet stuff will go your route and contact you. I always had Laborador Retrievers for 25 years and if they missed one spoonful they were rushed immediately to the doctor. ###Sorry to hear Frank Whitely died. He is now re-united with his beloved Ruffian. Ruffians movie is supposed to be on tv again this week or next. Always say I wont watch it again as I use a box of kleenexs up every time I watch it. Also,

BUTTERFLY BELLE came in 6th in her race today. It was a $25,000 claimer at Bay Meadows. She "settled early and failed to rally with no response."

No one claimed her.

I hope they will listen to her now. This little mare doesn't like it out there. She wants to stay home, and be a horse. She needs a loving family, and an honorable retirement.

God Bless and keep you, BUTTERFLY BELLE.
God Bless and keep you CHELOKEE.

But tonight:
a kind death for a blind foal.
It is a new low

THISGOODPLACE UPDATE !!!

THISGOODPLACE3: THE TIME TRAVELER, has just been posted on the DB under the BARBARO thread.

I post it on the eve of the Derby to honor "the rose-runners."

I hope that the Frens will like it.

Here is an excerpt:

The diamond sand covered their hooves, as they walked. It lightly flew up and dusted their legs, tails and bellies. The more they walked, the more luminous they became. They sparkled as the sand sparkled. They trailed swirling streams of color, kicking up stardust, and the sands of time, as they walked.

...to be continued

I know that we are all praying for a safe flight for everyone, tomorrow, and for ACN for CHELOKEE. The Prayers, and the Love of the Frens will make the difference.

Goodnight All. Sweetest dreams to you.

for the highest good..
she said..

..for chelokee and michael matz

..for all trainers who saw it happen
and quielty returned to their barns
to look
and re-check and re configure--did they miss anything?
eying their prized ones
..dreams awaiting
.tomorrow

.where
does the rain fall but also
deep into the ground
pools of mud and sand
mix in with the ants
and twigs of little nests
melt eventually into fissured rock
somewhere there will be moss
and tendrils followed by fresh roots
holding hands underneath
.these earthen mounds

way above
there is thundering hooves..
meet this all with love
she said--
meet it all with love

.the lessons tumble out faster then i can wipe the tears away
and then have to laugh about the plans cast now aside tonight
because it is here again
..that pain and doubt of faith
but
why
him?

with the feverish updates
and looking for facts about broken front legs ankles .
.thin legs

it has been another tumultuous day in our world

beginning with a sweep of images evoking Barbaro
.trembling flashes of what was
even the blue blanket .
.elegant heavy cotton
drapped over muscles just about formed

in a complete choreographed atunement of power and heart .
we see
it is to come ---

Nicanor
first dazed and then
a dozen frames later,
sad and bewildered eyes
looking into his lens-from his pristine new stall no
humid heat
very bright,
no
here for him is .cool canadian air
filled with maryland farm scents

different sounds
maybe a bit homesick
for his friends and groom

i re learned today
then from his soulful curious so
intelligent eyes
as if i was invading a very sacred and private place..
that i might just be a tad selfish
to want to know his every move
top to bottom -maybe a t premature

he looks so much like the full brother of Barbaro
how can it be ..so long ago and yet so now

but also i feel his deep innocence
and i want to protect him from ANY eyes
that do not have his best interest at heart
and who would best know that
but his trainer and his owners?
the divine above?

to return their gift of Barbaro to us
we can weave a large circle of light and surround him
with the love--un conditional
that sets those boundaries
of spirit and respect
for his growth to flow
un- interrupted
by the flash of celebrity
that disease our country eats and sleeps in

of time--that is timeless free to learn and roam

animals have taught me since childhood
to respect their energetic boundaries
..respect their right to grow and become
on their own time
not of mine or anyone else's

just 24 hours ago the jacksons made their ultimate
gift and sacrifice
to share their beloved barbaro with the world.
.to commit his ashes to the very public holy grail of american racing
churhill downs

and they deserve the respect and privacy to live their lives in peace
that nicanor and lentenor
..may grow in their own time
protected and given the space
to become who they may become.

amidst the near tragedy today tht is what i re learned
no greed but to say\
thank you thank you
for all you have given me

.they deserve the safe and sacred space
to learn and be who they will be
the accident of chelokee
..that this is one message i get
from this near tragedy
..they both riding to the hospital in the ambulance together
can you imagone to re lvoe this?
..trembling in the dark
whispering no words but sweat on the brow and hidden tears

..the strain on michael
and the need to support and be a presence for healing
for them .
.we all have that in us..
count me in

this large circle
has held such joy and such terrible sorrow

tonight i hold them
them
so dear
and let me
be the first to let go
of any expectations
not to add to his or theirs
of nicanor;s or lentenor;s burdons
in any shape or way

now
protect them SO
grace and great heart can grow .
the life they deserve

to flourish .

from time to time
it will be wonderful
to see their progress
i will be there
when they come to the gates

may no shadows be cast on the rigor of their lives already so full

tonight that is what i feel
in the hanky that i hold close
soaked with my own tears
of regret for the pain held today
amidst the joys too
cast not any shadow on that golden path
they so richly deserve
that would be then my reward

in this frenetic energy
accidents will grow and happen
and as chelokee sleeps in his hospital stall
may michael and he
..feel our love and prayers
that visionaire
not feel
michael;s deep distress either
may he follow our love
to his own destiny -

may all horses return to the finnish line
safe tomorrow
. for that i pray
with all my heart

we all have lived through dark times
and now again we meet
we are called to do the best our hearts can offer

step it up
no matter what/
count me in

the hay--its deep woodsy scent of suns past

,the soft and very silent breathing
of new flowering trees
and the rich green carpet of kentucky grass
..let them sing
let them sing..

Grade 3 winner Chelokee arrived at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington in good order on Friday evening after suffering a condylar fracture in his right front leg in the Alysheba Stakes (G3) earlier in the afternoon at Churchill Downs.

Larry Bramlage, the on-call veterinarian for the American Association of Equine Practitioners, said at 7 p.m. Friday that Chelokee had arrived in Lexington in good order. The first priority will be re-establishing blood supply to the colt’s injured leg.

Chelokee was stabilized with a splint before he was shipped to Lexington, which is about 75 miles from Churchill Downs in Louisville.

“He was traveling absolutely perfect. I had the best horse in the race," Dominguez said. "I was just trying to pick my spot and as soon as he got to the top of the lane, he switched to his right lead and broke down. There was absolutely no contact.”
