Barbaro Updates: 574

updates are now here.

Update 3406: Artist Alexa King has been selected to design Barbaro's statue at Churchill Downs: Derby Museum unveils design for Barbaro statue.

Update 3405: Some outstanding photographs of Nicanor from today.

Update 3404: And Nicanor arrived at Fair Hill this morning: Nicanor ships to Fair Hill.

Update 3403: Big Brown worked a sharp 3/8ths this morning at Churchill Downs in 35.4: Big Brown Gets Easy Work at Churchill, excerpt:

"It looked good to me," Dutrow said. "I watched from the frontside and I'm as happy as I could be. I could see when he turned around with the pony right away he was a little too agressive, which you could expect, I think. It just went as good as it could have possibly went; it didn't look like he did too much and he was well within himself."

Update 3402: A chilly start to another gorgeous morning here at Woodbine. We had a busy morning with nine sets, five before the break and four after the break. Twenty seven horses trained which is our record, we have twenty nine here right now. All my horses went nicely. We took three sets to the gate for a little gate schooling. All were calm and relaxed. There were a few loose horses running around during the morning, the "alarm" was quite busy, thankfully non of them were ours.

You can now pre-order a DVD of The First Saturday in May.

Finally, Nicanor embarks on the next stage of his young life: Nicanor Ships to Fair Hill.

Update 3401: Here are two of my recent posts on The Rail, that detail what the Derby contenders are doing this close to the race:

Gate and Paddock Schooling
Big Workouts Are Over, So Now What?

Please keep calling and writing.

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George and the rest of the stellar gang in Equine Heaven.

For them:

MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR THURSDAY MAY 1 AND FRIDAY MAY 2

PHASE II OF OPERATION “CRAIG”…. From the National Horse Protection League

Senator Larry Craig - famous for misbehaving in a different kind of stall - is using stall tactics on the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.
His threat to hold up Senate consideration of the bill (S.311 by Sens. Landrieu and Ensign) is putting thousands of horses in danger of ruthless killer buyers who want to buy horses at auction and haul them to Mexico or Canada for a gruesome demise.

Tell your Senator to Stop the "Larry Craig Stall.”
Please use the remainder of this week to complete “Operation Craig”. Call your own Senator, especially those that are supporters, and ask them to Stop the Larry Craig Stall!!

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!

Thanks again for all that you do!

Hiya, FsOB! Wow, Marg, thanks for writing that Nicanor is now at Fair Hill! How awesome is that? Tonight the Bourbon ball making begins! Only one day till KY Oaks and two till D-Day. Wishing each of you a productive & golden day. It's very cold here this AM, but the sun is glinting off the Thames quite beautifully. Peace, RMH

#### To Sandra: Try offering Chief some Gatorade or maybe some half-strength low-fat chicken broth. Someone else also suggested popsicles last PM. May he have renewed strength today! ####

haven't read anything on board yet from today - just popping in to register my feed-back from the 2-day Larry Craig call-in blitz.

Jon, the dedicated phone aide at Sen. Lugar's office with whom I've established a "working relationship" - am able to email him directly to get breaking info to the Senator's man who's "the guy" on S 311 - hadn't heard about the blitz yet, but reported that both on Tuesday all day, and to date on Wednesday when we spoke, Lugar's ofc rec'd a remarkable number of CONSTITUENT calls in favor of S 311. I'm positive that was not only in this one Senator's office.

I believe the blitz - that included having people call their own non-ccsponsor legislators - indeed had a tremendous impact on the "climate" in DC - and look forward to being able to direct our energies to rehab and rehome so we can stop having to spend money on rescue from the slaughter pipeline.

##########
all who "see" me here for almost 2 years now, almost every day, know that I don't usually rant, well, I guess today's the day - The First of May -- historic day of revolutions - "May day" - pre-Christian big seasonal holiday worshiping the goddess Maia - currently celebrated in the US as "Law Day" - (don't get me started on what gets spent on elections . . . makes me wanna puke - but I feel the same way about what is wasted on fireworks displays - just my silly way of thinking . . . all that $ up in smoke while people are starving and without medical care - not to mention the situation of the critters we all care for and want to nurture - well SHUT ME UP!

speaking of which:

########### Just catching up from yesterday (dropped out early) - read aome posts that got me going - Sherry, Margie and others upset by the Letterman skit - ruminating on that -

didn't it put the HS issue before a huge national audience?

Maybe we should be thanking him - or am I THAT skewed?

Seriously - that "bit" brought the dirty little secret out in the open - and for that, and stone me if you will, I thank the messenger.

Just my opinion as an entertainer . . .

Now I will shut up and if anybody wants to discuss any of this please do it offline. All my contact info is in my highlighted signature below.

re the continuing Larry Craig blitz -

after reading new directions for the rest of the week - as constituents, we need to call ALL our own legislators, sponsors as well as non-cosponsors - by "our" I mean the 2 Senators and 1 Rep who represent the district/State where you live. Glad I read those directions or I wouldn't have called Sen. Bayh, which I am about to do.

Now world's first cloned horse gives birth to 'perfectly healthy' foal
Last updated at 12:01pm on 30th April 2008

Comments (1)

The world's first cloned horse has given birth to a foal.

Prometea, cloned in 2003 by Italian professor Cesare Galli, gave birth to Pegasus six weeks ago, the geneticist said.

Professor Galli said that both mare and foal were doing well and added that he planned to create other cloned horses for reproduction.

Speaking from his research institute at Cremona he said: "The foal is called Pegasus. He was born over a month ago and is growing well. "Prometea is also healthy and is showing no difficulties." Pegasus was born on March 17 naturally and with no problems after being conceived by artificial insemination, a common practice among horsebreeders.

Pegasus's father, Abendfurst, is also a Haflinger breed like Prometea.

Prof. Galli said he hoped the birth would ease concerns about the health of cloned animals, sparked by the short lifespan of Dolly the sheep, who died at the age of six.

He added: "Since she was born five years ago, Prometea has turned out to be an absolutely normal animal in excellent health.

"This birth will allay concerns that have always surrounded Prometea, like other clones, and is the final proof of her normality.

"Pegasus shows that cloned animals can grow normally and reproduce in a natural fashion". Prometea's own birth was extraordinary not only because it was the first time a horse had been cloned but also because it was the first time a mammal had given birth to its own clone and exact DNA copy.

Prometea was created using a skin cell from her mother, which was then fused with an empty equine egg and implanted in her mother's uterus.

Prometea was named after Prometheus, the Titan in Greek mythology who stole fire from the gods and gave it to humankind.

Prof. Galli said his method of cloning was easier and more practical than earlier processes, including the one used in the U.S. to clone a mule.

He added that a cloned sttallion called Pieraz, created in 2005, was also expecting his first offspring.

The scientist, who has also cloned pigs and cattle, has been excommunicated by the Catholic Church.

He said: "Pegasus's birth is very important because many of the horses that go into racing are castrated at a young age and so, as adults, cannot reproduce and cannot create a successive generation.

"Cloning is nothing more than a form of assisted fertility and with this we can create clones of champion racehorses who perhaps may never have given birth."

WIND WIND AND MORE WIND:
***************************************************
Thursday, May 1st... I keep losing the internet, so I must type fast. Which is like asking our old dog Daisy to chew with her mouth closed. Cold winds are rattling the house. 2008 will be remembered as the year of the Winds. So before I am once again booted of the air (the crowd roars) here is a quick replay from yesterday:

The gelding Truck, who recently came to us from a feed lot, was adopted by an event trainer in Vacaville.

The paint gelding Sun Rise was living in Vacaville, and we found him a new home with a family in Winters. A big Thank You to Ryan Andrews for providing the tranportation.

A thoroughbred mare living at a feed lot in Vallejo came to us, and I named her May. She looks to be about 15. A big Thank You to Ryan Andrews for providing the transportation.

We greeted 3 race horses yesterday. A big Thank You to Sandy for providing the transportation. All 3 are geldings, and all 3 are bay. There is Sacred Senor, and I suppose we will call him Senor. Paradise Cove, and for sure we will call him Dice. Crowning Moosa, and around our barn his name is now Moose.

A lady phoned from Kansas to say she has a plane ticket to come see us. Of all the rescue ranches she visits on the internet, the lady has decided to adopt from Tbfriends. Awe shucks...

A lady phoned from New York, and she wants to know what exactly am I doing to stop the shooting of wolves? Huh?

I raked all the poop in the south pasture, and naturally no one drove by to see how sparkling clean it was.

I paid five thousand dollars to fill up the old ranch truck up with gas.

Carls Jrs makes a very good chocolate malt. They use real malt.

Theresa and Monica phoned from Louiville, Kentucky. They were eating at Joes Crab Shack, so I told them to try the fried calamari. Theresa and Monica flew to Kentucky for the big race this Saturday.

Brian Gill phoned from Austin, and for lunch he had fried catfish, it was incredible, and now Brian wants to move there.

Becky Coombs phoned to ask who is gonna be kicked off American Idol. I tell her Jason. Like just about everything else that comes out of my mouth, I was wrong.

Cathy and I had lasagne for dinner. The kind you stick in a microwave and guess the minutes because my glasses were in the old ranch truck, and the printing on the side of the box is so tiny you would need to be Superman to see. Not bad for frozen.

Final barn check, and it was so cold you could almost see your breath. New geldings from the race track are grabbing for my cell phone, hoping to call a cab. And can someone please change the station from love songs by request?

And that was yesterday. Lots of stuff in between, but by now you have already clicked off and moved on to My Space. Enjoy you windy first day of a new month Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses. A crock pot kind of day...

Joe

Top Left: Horses come to us from the race track.

Top Right: Sacred Senor, he is 6, and at the race track he earned decent money.

Bottom Left: Paradise Cove, he is also 6, and as a yearling in Kentucky he sold for 600 grand. A very kind horse.

Bottom Right: A hunk. His name is Crowning Moosa, and he is 4.

Good Thursday Morning, ABR Famblee:)

Reading here that *NICANOR* has shipped to Fair Hill...I am just beyond 'excitled' and tickled the pinkest of PINKS for Mr. Brette to begin forming that SO special BOND...the one that only HE can...:) With Nicanor!!!

I cannot IMAGINE the emotions he might feel:) And I wanna say, I don't think *NICANOR* has any 'big shoes to fill'...I believe THIS boy has HIS OWN SHOES:) I believe he is TRULY 'something especial':) and like the rest of yole...I am on the edge of my SEAT waiting to read all about it!!:)

It is COLD here in these foothills this morning, I have the HEATER on againnnnnnnnn:/ by next week, though, we are forecast for the 80's...that will be nice....let's hear it for some 80's and NOT 90's & 100's yet, PLEASE!

Sandra...I'll be gone most of today, but hoping to see a note from you...when you feel like it and have time:)

Please give *CHIEF* some lovings from his Aunty Lynne....and I never thought of GATORADE...but that's GREAT...and what about Pedia-Sure, too...I think they make little 'pops' that you freeze and they might most certainly be better (packed with electrolytes) than plain ole popsicles:) Good Grief, *CHIEF* has soooooooooo MANY 'Aunty Nurses', doesn't he?????!!!!! :) It's only 'cause we all LOVE HIM SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH:)

Everyone, have a GREAT DAY TODAY!!!

I agree Lyneeeeeeeeeee. Nicanor is his own self. He probably will have a very unique personality. It's a given that comparisons will be made, but lets all support this boy and respect his accomplishments for what they are - his own. Let's honor and respect him for himself.

Go Nicanor. Be safe always, little (big) fella.

at MHR - names have been selected for PMU mare Jerri's forthcoming foal - who will be Nellie's living legacy - (we recently learned that Jerri is Nellie's daughter)

Nellie's Dream ("Dreamer") if a colt

Nellie's Hope ("Hope") if a filly

(remember last year how we waited for Rosie and Misty? remember life before the Diva and Vlad? [pet names for the MHR babies]

Don't forget marestare is up and running and awaiting another miracle baby about to be born in a stable.

Dogs and Gatorade. When I travelled all over the country doing nursing, with my dog Lucky, I kept a small dish in the car and a bottle of Gatorade. Every now and then I'd squirt some in his dish. It seemed to help him from the stress of being in the car 8-10 hours at a time. Just don't overdue it. It has a tendency to cause the hershey squirts. :(

Good Morning all FOB's, Baby B & now Nicanor!!

Thank you Soraya - I have gone in and sent an email & fax & had my family do the same. I also called Senator Craig's office & urged he pass the bills. I hope we can make a difference. We have to save the horses!

I am very excited now that Nicanor is "home" @ Fair Hill...I do not think he has big shoes to fill ... he is his own horse & he will forge his own way, but I am hopeful he can meet or exceed his brothers talent. I pray he will be free from injuries in the process.

We love you Nicanor & will be with you all the way!

Hugs to all....Debbie

P.S. The western spring winds are horrific. I'm sure MHR is getting them as well. The noise kept me up all night, and the dogs wouldn't even go out this morning. They just stood at the door, ears flapping, but they wouldn't go out. 60MPH winds are forecasted until 10PM. I hope the MHR cam doesn't get knocked out.

CJ - you are right - there are other ways to "see" things. Perhaps the Letterman "skit" was or could be "helpful." We know that there was reaction to it ..........the aucience was quiet - and likely not the response Letterman was seeking. I did not get to the web site yet - good idea - perhaps a "thank you" will provide an opportunity to say much more than a reprimand would have !!

Combine our HS and Downed Animal Calls today (IMO)

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=22876.1

Please go there for an HSUS email action alert for National Downed Animal Protection call-in day today THURSDAY May 1, in support of two House Bills and two Senate Bills re humane treatment of animals in the slaughter industry.

My take: [crossposting excerpt from my post 2 at the above DB thread]

I just made my 3 calls [re the Downed Animals], and at the same time talked to the aides about our anti HS bills. Got the same [HSUS] alert that you did, with my legislators' phone numbers right in the email.

IMO we can make our anti HS call AT THE SAME TIME we make the call about the downed animals - it emphasizes that WE HAVE NO OTHER AGENDA. IMO calling about both at the same time and mentioning that, gets the point across. As I just wrote to one of my friends,

Hey - today is also national call-in day for Downed Animals - and I think it is good to tell our legislators, I am calling about two issues today - animals I eat, and animals I don't eat, haha. Pushing S 311/HR 503 while also pushing two House and two Senate Bills re treatment of animals in the "legit" slaughter industry. That way we are emphasizing to the legislators, that the anti horse slaughter people HAVE NO OTHER AGENDA re other "farm" animals . . .

... the HSUS downed animal email ... has this good link [remove space]

https:// community.hsus.org/humane/leg-lookup/search.html

for looking up federal legislators; gonna use that in my mass email re our Bills today.

May 1 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

A country road in May hums with activity. Bees comb the clover fields for nectar. Buttercups and dayflowers open to the sun and a mockingbird sets out to mimic every sound it has ever heard--even the baby chick. Wild onions and pink verbena share space and the buttery blooms of buffalo peas nod in spring breezes. Only now the air has warmed to the sun and the plants and leaves of oaks grow so much overnight that the sky closes like a cocoon. Now is the time to slow down and enjoy the minute changes as they come hourly, the scents, the roadsides filled with new plants, and the green hills and valleys. They come quickly, the di ga ne tli yv s di, changes, that sometimes mature before we see the difference. If we are not careful, our clouded thought and vision shut it out until we have missed the best part.

This brings rest to my heart. I feel like a leaf after a storm, when the wind is still.

Hello all on this day of happy news about Nicanor,

I need some advice about a horse that trips. This has been going on for a few years but is of more concern now because he is being cantered more and that's when he falls into the wall or falls on his front ankles. He shows no symptoms of the usual equine neurological disorders (EPM, etc., illness or injury, abnormality, or personality change. He's an 18-year-old Arab gelding trained to Training Level Dressage. The sweetest boy with lovely gaits. This tripping (for lack of a better word) happens rarely but is worrying us, especially since it may affect his fate. I would appreciate any input, any experiences anyone has had or heard of. I have Googled equine neuro disorders and muscular-skeletal disorders but haven't found much of anything helpful. Could he simply be a clumsy boy? I am planning to have a vet examine him.

Thanks and love to all!

Definition

Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis

is associated with elevated levels of potassium in the bloodstream. The disorder causes occasional episodes of muscle weakness.

Causes

The cause of hyperkalemic periodic paralysis is believed to be a genetic muscle disease. In most cases it is inherited directly (from parent to child); in other cases, it occurs randomly in a family group.

The disorder involves attacks of muscle weakness or paralysis, alternating with periods of normal muscle function. Attacks usually begin in early childhood. Multiple daily attacks are possible.

Attacks typically last only 1 to 2 hours, but can sometimes last as long as a day. They tend to occur while resting after exercise or exertion. Attacks may also be triggered by exposure to cold, or by eating small amounts of potassium.

Unlike other forms of periodic paralysis (such as familial periodic paralysis and thyrotoxic periodic paralysis), hyperkalemic periodic paralysis is not associated with low potassium in the bloodstream (serum potassium). In fact, there may be normal or high levels of potassium in the bloodstream during and between attacks. The condition may be termed "normokalemic periodic paralysis" if potassium is normal during attacks.

Glucose and insulin administration, which trigger attacks of other forms of periodic paralysis, do not trigger attacks of hyperkalemic periodic paralysis. Giving potassium, which is used to treat weakness associated with the other disorders, worsens the weakness in this case.

The serum potassium levels are usually not at the level that would be expected to cause paralysis. The potassium level may remain normal or only very slightly elevated. It is thought that the disorder is caused by problems with the muscle cell wall and the way the body controls electrolyte levels in the cell (electrolytes are molecules, such as sodium and potassium, that are capable of carrying an electrical current.

Weakness most commonly affects the muscles of the arms and legs. Heart arrhythmias may occasionally develop during attacks. Although muscle strength is initially normal between attacks, repeated attacks may eventually cause progressive and persistent muscle weakness between attacks.

Risks include a family history of periodic paralysis. Attacks may be triggered by fasting. Attacks seldom occur during exercise but may be triggered by rest following exercise.

Disorders such as hyperkalemic periodic paralysis, which cause intermittent episodes of paralysis as their primary effect, are uncommon. More commonly, an intermittent episode of paralysis or weakness is a symptom of another disorder.

Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis occurs in approximately 1 in every 100,000 people. Men are affected more often than women and usually have more severe symptoms.

Symptoms

Weakness/paralysis
Most commonly located in the shoulders and hips
Arms and legs may also be involved
Occurs intermittently
May occur on awakening
May be triggered by rest after exercise
May be triggered by fasting
May be triggered by exposure to cold
May be triggered by eating small amounts of potassium
Usually lasts for less than 2 hours
Return to normal strength between attacks
Normal alertness during attacks (no confusion or loss of consciousness)
Exams and Tests

The health care provider may suspect hyperkalemic periodic paralysis based on a family history of the disorder. Other clues to the disorder are symptoms that come and go and normal or high results of a potassium test. The health care provider will also run tests to rule out other disorders as the cause of intermittent weakness.

Between attacks, examination is normal. During an attack, the following may be observed:

Reflexes may be decreased or absent
Weakness is flaccid (loose) rather than spastic (tight)
Weakness is greater in proximal muscle groups (near the body, such as shoulders and hips) than in distal groups (away from the body, such as arms and legs)
Attacks are not triggered by tests that reduce serum potassium (such as giving insulin and glucose), but may be triggered by giving potassium. Serum potassium is normal or high during attacks and may be normal or high between attacks.

Treatment

The goals of treatment are relief of acute symptoms and prevention of further attacks.

Attacks are seldom severe enough to require emergency treatment. However, weakness can become worse with repeated attacks, so treatment to prevent the attacks should occur as soon as possible.

Glucose or other carbohydrates (sugars) given during an attack may reduce the severity. Intravenous calcium or diuretics such as furosemide may be needed to stop sudden attacks. Intravenous glucose and insulin cause potassium to move into the cell and may reduce weakness without a loss of total body potassium.

A high-carbohydrate diet may be recommended.

Acetazolamide, a medication that prevents attacks of familial periodic paralysis, is also effective in preventing attacks of hyperkalemic periodic paralysis. Thiazide diuretics such as chlorothiazide are also effective and have fewer side effects than acetazolamide.

Outlook (Prognosis)

Sometimes attacks disappear later in life on their own. However, chronic attacks generally result in progressive muscle weakness that is present even between attacks.

Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis responds well to treatment. Treatment may prevent, and may even reverse, progressive muscle weakness.

Chief ate his can of prescription dog food this morning. He seems to be doing okay today but is still very listless and sleeps a lot. I suppose its going to take time. Of course, he still is having a problem with his back legs and sometimes sways when he walks. But hey hes here and he is walking. He sends a message to his friend Murphy "you can share my nilla wafers anytime you want to-just move on in with us." also, to his friend Nikita "hope you are feeling better and be sure to eat a lot of nilla wafers because they make everything better."I am so excited about having so many friends and people who care about me and love me-you see I didnt have a very good start in life at least for the first few months-I was hungry and scared and people hit me and I finally lived in a ditch and then one day my person stopped and I came here. I was quite a handful as I hated people and was terrified of them. It took quite a while to trust peeps but hay look at me now. All yole are my friends and I love each and every one of you. My person said she will check in with yole later. Your friend, Chief

EXTRA THURSDAY 5/01 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS list is posted below and at this DB thread:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=22958.1

Stress importance of cosponsoring & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB Thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:
ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES? Here is today's (Thursday 5/01/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy: "Remember….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Thursday 5/01 Extra HAHS List -

Prior HS History - These are all Reps new to the 110th, either elected in Nov. 2006 or recently in special elections. (See CJ's notes below.) Their votes on HR 249 (if they were around when it was voted on) are shown below.

IMO - thank those who voted YES on HR 249 and remind that it only applies to WILD equines and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to end export.

CALIFORNIA (2nd part)
-Representative Laura Richardson - Note from CJ - elected via Special Election, August 21, 2007- She has officially endorsed Hillary Clinton for President - remind her office that Hillary

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, i.e., what concerns an aide expressed, whether they told you the legislator "supports" the bill, or that they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I'll forward to our strategy experts; this feedback factors in to future plans.

Catherine in MN--

This may not help at all, but we bought a pony--Welch/Connamara cross, about 12 years old--who would occasionally trip in the training ring and go down on his knees. It seemed to be due to laziness and inattention. We had the farrier to trim him short and set him back on his heels, and also we made sure he was fully awake and attentive while he was working. This solved the problem. He had a wonderful calm disposition and taught many children to ride before he passed on at age 35.

Good luck!

Saw the statue and am ecstatic. Its going to be sooooo AWESOME. OK, now I'm saving my pennies to be at Churchill Downs next year...we have to make it a day we'll long remember.

###
Jim Coarse, your pictures of Nicanor are stunning. What a beautiful horse. Its the eyes...

###
Today was up at the ranch. Willow and I each received a beautiful pencil drawing and poem that was created the day Casey died. There are only 3 copies in existence - the third was kept by the woman who created it. I miss her...and Perseus.

What a day.

A NEW GEOGRAPHY

the flow of time

coincidence?
of Barbaro's voyage to interment at churchill downs today
as NIcanor will arrive at fair hill and the song continues
in a new way

gently quielty filled wiht the myriad of hands
and skill
and wisdom from every level..of the trade

copper,wood thin long leaves
leaves, everglades will change to a landscape of fluffy cherry and apple trees, pine oak
the scene, the smells
are different
as the driver speeds to the upper reaches of maryland farm land

he sees it all
he does know
something
is changing and he is calm
assured

i bet they miss him already
down there in the everglades ..life muffled and a apart from the roar of urban life

look at the quality of
how the groom leads him in to the van,
taking the possibility of a stumble in his own shoulders
way ahead of it ever happening

i love the way he is speaking to his charge
in the unwords of that picture

Nicanor walks steady onto the slightly tilted upgrade plank
covered perfectly in chips..

he has that joyful confidence that is quiet
.wrapped already in a faith of the two leggeds..

it is all in the details.--from far away even
it looks feels --just right
.that wonderful couple
know what they love
and know how to nurture and create a foundation for a horse to blossom in any direction

timing of--a personal snap--
the deep kindness in ernie;s eyes
on her you tube story
of how she became a barbaro fan

i bet many of us could sit in that chair too
we may recognize her passion as our own..

..the forum fills with tales of rescues and interventions
that are creatively solved..
dozens step up to handle an impossible abandonment of LA PINTA ..amazing grace re visiTED
cruelty to the max and every one
finds the flow

BARBARO
she was heard
thank you'
to many unheard
but felt out there ..well done well done.
we saw it ..we speak for her tragic suffering
..now

some wonderful energy
filters through these photographs we received last night
of Nicanor making his next journey
to fair hill

i am transformed by the sweet innocence of this horse
and his florida groom
who maybe vveils his private sorrow ..i will miss him he thinks
shoves his feelings down to do his job to the T .
.just giving him a very clear pat .
.goodbye
not indulging in what he may truly be feeling

to help him move forward
..show no sorrow to the horse but faith in the next step

those sparkling white ankle wraps
woven
around his ankles perfectly
from very present hands
.
.his halter taped
..not one thing done thoughtlessly or in haste
every one present
doing their own part to the best of their ability
..no qualms or second guessing
in a chain of command that is firm in knowledge and care
passion for the horse and its voice-
splendid justice ..splendid indeed
peep say the little birds wathching the whole scene infold

remember john henry and his birds..?>
how they kept him company and ate what he dropped?/ hahha

peter waiting for the van
breakfast a bit different today, i am sure
..a new story unfolding
a new chance to pour from deep
love
.
.the horses will hear the wheels coming up the drive
-soft purring of the big engine.
you can rest assured
eveyrone;s chores will be done by five thrty pm
all will be on hand.. choreographed to the second.
.
time will suspend for a split second
as the door opens
and that noble head
his brothers' markings uniquely blended into his very own persona
.
what will eduardo feel .

just re watched the derby
and there he is
eduardo runnng jumpng alonside edgar and barbaro
in between dozens of people trying to get close
.such a race
such a legacy
nicanor to be met today on his own ground

soul

you see love in the detail

his upright ears and eyes pointing forward .
.bring it on birng it on

the other barns will whisper back and forth
here he is here he is

a second chance for me to review and contemplate
the qualities of the story i embraced and love
love
unfolding with my own life

HOW TO DO ONE;S JOB on EARTH IN JUST THE BEST WAY
TO LIVE ONE;S LIFE AT FULL TILT THE BEST..

and behind the detail

of the woodchips leading to the loading van
the old fashioned travelling van
the kind
with air flowing through
,spacious
yes of horse history in the wood and steel walls
of dreams and hopes
sweat and hay

the kind groom.slips into the background.
.but has left a deep impression of faith deliverd to NIcanor
and many others in his care.

his faded cotten blue shirt
damp from the effort to attend to every detail
as he loads him on

NIcanor
walks as if listening..
a moment of sadness? maybe in the quiet of the trip.
.for a split second..

to say goodbye to his childhood

the everglades and the soft bird sounds
soon to be augmented by fresher air not heavy with a tropical sun
as much a canadian well
carrying farm scents
woods of pine and oak

they are waiting
not a crumb on his new stall floor
..five thirty will come .
.the air will be suspended for that one moment
when the new groom makes eye contact and delivers NIcanor to his feed bucket life peter.....stands to listen and wait
imagine in his heart..

may the glory of hope
shine on them all
and for us

A NEW GEOGRAPHY

may the derby on saturday
be safe and full of joy for the ones that are running
..may all come home safely

the horse.
their souls-- the gleam of their coats
feet attached to broad chests of great muscles
there
in the mystery of their huge hearts

i find such blessing

bless every one and every one bless

## Fren DebbieLA (our own little Southern Belle):

The great and legendary TERLINGUA was released into the pure white light of Thisgoodplace, on April 29, (our Beloved's birthday), due to infirmities of old age.

She lived a racehorse's dream. Her glory is great. Her legacy is legend.

Her life is what I would desire for every beauty born.

She was blessed and loved. Pure beauty and heart, she was. Her influence, and blood lives on.

She is with BARBARO and all of our beloveds now. Her passing is a bittersweet blessing to aspire to.

Thanks, Dear Fren, for asking. You have been the only one here to share a comment on the news of this great one's passing.

Your FOB Fren, O

###More for DebbieLA":

Yes...TERLINGUA is the daughter of (her daddy, SECRETARIAT and (her mom, CRIMSON SAINT.

She is the dam of STORM CAT, and the great champion filly,CHAPEL OF DREAMS.

She has been a tremendous influence on modern TB heritage.

She deserves a place in the hearts of the FOBs.

Rest in peace, TERLINGUA, and may light perpetual shine upon you. I hope your long life was happy and healthy, and I feel in my heart that your esteemed father will welcome you with open hooves at the gates of Equine Heaven.

##Oh, Fren Nancy in CT:

I missed your April 30th post.

I should have known that you would add to TERLINGUA's honors, here in Barbaronation.

We all do get busy, and this board is fraught with vast need and interest.

Thank you for your kind tribute to this magnificent beauty.

Her father and mother, have nickered and snoofed her onto the great green running plain for a joyous welcoming romp.

Thank you for adding your heartsong to her tribute.

Hay, FOB's!

Need to ask a collective favor for prayers/white light/healing energy/protection for Willow (the owner of "the boys") and me. Something happened at the ranch today...something neither Willow or I was prepared to handle because it was totally outside of our experience - we had to rely on intuition to resolve this. We had to destroy something that carried a lot of dense (what some people call negative) energy.

I don't want to go into detail here. If anybody would like to know the situation, please e-mail me privately. We're not angry, we weren't fearful. We sent the density to God to transform.

The boys are OK. I went into the medicine wheel afterwards and lay down. Windy came in the circle and stayed with me for a while. Illusion was close by, Stormy stayed by the fence.

Got a lovely e-mail from Mike Rea...guess who he saw today???? NICANOR!!! He was THERE!!!! What a treat that must have been for him...

Thank you all...

A wild an crazy day here, mostly because I had to take my older kitty to the vet. "153" was named such because we adopted her from our fire station, #153.

She is going to be 11 years old, not that old for indoor kitty. She has lost three pounds this year, down from 9 pounds to 6 pounds, so it was time to get her checked out.

Of course, being the DRAMA QUEEN, she got so upset in the car that she vomited everywhere! I had her in a carrier, but the projectile vomit went right through the front bars all over the truck.

I wasn't very happy when I arrived.

They did some blood work on her, results tomorrow. I suspect a thyroid problem, quite common in older kitties.

She doesn't need a candle group yet! I will keep you all posted and let you know what I hear tomorrow.

BARB AZ - IF 153 has thyroid issues and IF she is as much of a hellion about taking pills as my Princess Maizie Lee was, ask your vet about the liquid meds. It is formulated in TX (among other places), comes in a variety of flavors (Maizie liked chicken), is very inexpensive and is shipped overnight...it was a BLESSING to us!

Thank you, Nancy. I will remember to ask about it. She IS a HELLION!

What a day. Beautiful, wonderful pictures of Nicanor, and the prospects of his future. I can't wait to hear more.

And the statue of our boy, B, all fours off the ground, flying at Churchill Downs forever.

Thank you Alex for this wonderful place you have created.

What a day here.

Nicanor to his new home.

The statue (clay model) of Barbaro revealed.

And then Vlad and Diva in Pink 8 'Racing Silks'.

And Jerri loving the attention from the peoples.

A strong reminder of all that's been done here, all we've gone through together. Quite a bit. It still amazes me. Almost 2 years worth.

Tomorrow I head into town to St. Francis de Assisi church in Ranchos de Taos. I will light a candle for each horse in the Derby. We take our pets to this church every year to be blessed by the Priest.

Good Night Famblee.

Posted by: Margie at May 2, 2008 1:59 AM

Barbaro's trainer, Michael Matz, attended the ceremony and said he was proud that Barbaro's final resting place would be in such a visible location, near the spot of his most heralded triumph.

"He had so many people that he touched, and they're making it possible that the people can be in touch with him," Matz said.

I also read it will be the first time an equine statue will show all 4 hooves off the ground. Barbaro will be buried underneath the statue.

Posted by: MJ at May 2, 2008 2:00 AM

###
BARB - even with the liquid, I still had to "swaddle" Maizie in a towel, immobilizing those front paws, held her on her back like a human baby, and then gently "coaxed" her mouth open and a quick squirt...but no chance of expelling the meds like with a pill, and after a while she became accustomed to the routine!

Posted by: Nancy in CT at May 2, 2008 2:08 AM

###
MARGIE - what a beautiful idea to light a candle for each Derby entrant. I realize that we all have our favorite(s), but all that really matters to me is that they are all SAFE!!!

Thank you for your thoughtfulness!

Nancy

Michael Matz is back at Churchill Downs. Matz trained Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro before the horse's eventual fatal injury in the 2006 Preakness. Barbaro remains in the minds of racing fans.

"A guy who never called me in my life called me and said it was Barbaro's birthday," Matz said. "That horse touched so many lives. It's just amazing."

Hay Famblee:)

Home....been here awhile....as I came up my walk, arms loaded...what do I SEE??? A RATTLESNAKE....all stretched out 'lazing in the sun'...except for he shouldn't be on MY walkway to my front door...no!no!no!...Not coiled...stretched out.....I checked first, hoping he might have just been a Gopher snake..NOPE...the rattles were a DEFINITE indication :-O He had his tail picked up off the pavers...shaking it at me!!!!

I came up the stairs, giving Mr. Snake a 'wide berth'....called THREE neighbormen BEFORE I found one at HOME!!! Went back o'side to wait for the MAN with the shovel!!! Snake was GONE...OMG!! I nearly lost my mind...but we found him..'hiding' near a large cement 'basket' I plant flowers in around Mother's Day!!!

I felt kinda bad he killed him....but we have so many Rattlesnakes here...and I am fine with them when they are in the 'wild'...but NOT in my YARD!!! So, he's in the freezer...I'll bury his head in a few days....very deep into the ground so no 'critters' find him and ingest...that would be BAD for the critter:(

I missed SO MUCH EXCITEMENT here today!!!

Nicanor's pictures are just AMAZING....:) Isn't he just MAGNIFICENT??? Bless his HORSEY HEART!!! He will be running on the same track surfaces his brother ran on....of course, he has no idea...because HE IS HIS OWN HORSE:) I thought of Peter and Michael Matz today...I felt my face SMILING while imagining Peter seeing Nicanor...touching him....talking to him!! Gosh:) How WONDERFUL for everyone there!! And for *NICANOR*, too:)

The statue of *BARBARO* is quite SOMETHING:)
'LARGER THAN LIFE'...Just like OUR BOY:) How VERY appropriate....:)

Marita....Thank You!! Sooooooo beauuuuuutiful!

Sandra!!!:) I am happy to read that *CHIEF* ate his food again today!!! *MURPHY* is all packed up and READY TO COME LIVE THERE....he heard Nilla Wafers and grabbed some of his favorite toys and his doggy bed...and he's waiting by the front door!!! lol! lol! lol!

Seriously, Sandra....I am VERY happy to know 'our' *CHIEF* is doing A-OK!!! Please give him a little AuntyLynneLoving for me:)

And last, but CERTAINLY not LEAST:) I read that *MIKE REA* was there when *NICANOR* arrived....I just 'tellya' Famblee.....:) THAT really made my face SMILLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEE 'alotsa'....that is just the *BOMB* as far as news goes this day:)

Well.....I'm going to go 'flake out' awhile, I'm KNACKERED!! Everyone, have a WONDERFUL night!!
