Barbaro Updates: 573

updates are now here.

Update 3400: Big Brown, the 3-1 Derby Favorite, will have to do it from the outside post: Big Brown draws far outside for Derby, excerpt:

Big Brown will start from post 20 and Colonel John will start from post 10 when the 134th Kentucky Derby is run Saturday at Churchill Downs. Track linemaker Mike Battaglia pegged Big Brown as the 3-1 favorite, followed by Colonel John at 4-1 and Pyro (post 9) the third choice at 6-1.

Update 3399: A close look at what the Derby contenders did today at Churchill Downs: Daily Derby Notes: April 30.

Update 3398: The order in which post positions will be drawn tonight has been determined: Poor Gayego, excerpt:

The entire order: 1. Visionaire, 2. Big Truck, 3. Colonel John, 4. Z Fortune, 5. Pyro, 6. Eight Belles, 7. Anak Nakal, 8. Court Vision, 9. Z Humor, 10. Monba, 11. Smooth Air, 12. Adriano, 13. Bob Black Jack, 14. Denis of Cork, 15. Cowboy Cal, 16. Big Brown, 17. Tale of Ekati, 18. Cool Coal Man, 19. Recapturetheglory, 20. Gayego

Update 3397: The Kentucky Derby draw is later this afternoon, and can be viewed on ESPN2 from 5pm to 6pm: Morning Line: 'An Empty Feeling' for Bob Baffert.

Update 3396: I am going to have to root for Big Truck: Big Truck to Benefit ReRun on Derby Day, excerpt:

Felice Busto, vice president of ReRun said, "We're thrilled to have the 'big' horse to publicize the 'Running for ReRun' program and encourage other owners to participate so we can place more ex-racehorses in good homes. While many owners like Mr. Fein care about what happens to their horses after racing, the reality is that for others, the horses are disposable after their last race.

"We only rely on support from owners, breeders, fans, and the racing industry to be able to give more ex-racehorses a second chance when their racing careers have ended," Busto added.

ReRun.

Update 3395: A chilly start to the morning this morning at Woodbine, but a bright sunny day so things did warm up. I had seven sets. There are now three of us riding for Steve in the morning's. Myself, Jodie who has been with us for a few weeks, and now Mark who is from India and spent some time in Dubai and has been at Woodbine before. Anyway, a good group with which to work. My horses went nicely. My last set went to the gate to stand. He stood well and was a little wild as I set off from the gate to start his mile gallop. Once we got into our gallop all was well. Another pleasant morning's work.

Update 3394: Steve Haskin takes a look at the new Derby arrival, Big Brown, and reviews some of the recent works of the contenders: Haskin's Derby Report: Early Thoughts.

Please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB, and congrats to Rob for being first today. Here's to more action to get Sen. Craig to release his hold on S. 311. Here's to a bright and productive day for each of us! Peace, RMH

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George and the rest of the stellar gang in Equine Heaven.

For them:

STRATEGY FOR WEDNESDAY APRIL 30

CONGRATULATIONS to you all for making our "Craig Call In Day" such a success. So many people were calling that the lines were busy all day. Many never got the chance to get through and be heard. For this reason, we are extending it to a TWO day event!!

We are asking everyone to continue calling Senator Larry Craig's office on Wednesday urging him to allow S. 311 to move forward. If enough people participate, we could shut down his phone lines for the SECOND day in a massive show of force, demonstrating just how many people support the bill he is undemocratically blocking.

Please call Senator Craig's office at 202-224-2752 and tell the aide answering the phone: I am calling to ask that Senator Craig allow S. 311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to move forward.

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!

Thanks again for all that you do!

Good morning everyone,

On Saturday, April 26th the Texas FOB and several friends and supporters of Never-E-Nuff Acres in Waxahachie, TX gathered to celebrate Barbaro's legacy. We had a work day and raised some money for the rescue. There were over 40 of us there We got a lot of work done and had some fun. If you would like to read about it, please go to message #21031.40 in the Barbaro file. The thread is entitled TX-FOB Celebrate B's Legacy on 4/26. There will be pictures posted on NEA's website soon.

Sen. Craig - Here we come again!!

Posted by: Patty in Dallas at April 30, 2008 11:58 AM

Hi Robyn.

Make sure you let the phone ring!!

'Cause Senator Craig is the 'ultimate' sleepyhead!!

He's dreaming of 'stall' time.

And, I'm not talking about the 'barn' kind.

Rob

Look out Craig, here we come!!!

Have a great day.

Posted by: Carol Nichols at April 30, 2008 12:48 PM

Good Wednesday morning FOBs,

I'll gladly call Craig's office again and again if that's what it takes.

Robyn - I wasn't on until last night but wished both Barbaro and Nikita a "happy birthday". I bet the birthday treat made it special.

Have a great day everyone!

###Laurie H., I am sitting her with tears falling after reading your tuck-in. The image of Windchill by Barbaro's side is just so very heartbreaking but so very sweet.

Thank you Laurie H. for your wonderful words, you have a true gift and I am very thankful you have found your place here to share with us.

Note from Tracey at Legacy Clydesdales:
***************************************************
please keep belle and georgia in your thoughts and prayers..tomorrow she goes in for total hoof resection on the hoof she foundered in..we have to take georgia with us for the surgery so they will both be under alot of stress and we need you guys to keep us in your prayers..thank you for all the prayers that you guys have already given us..surgey is at 8am i will post as soon as i can and let you all know how it all went.
**************************************************
So, keep beautiful Belle in prayer along with George who has to go to Surgicare along with her mom. And prayer for Tracey.

Someday, because of Barbaro, there will be a simple approach to curing laminitis in horses--other than this totally (to my mind) crude
total resection of the entire hoof...
in fact, let us pray that research will bring us a preventative for this horrible disease that torments and cuts otherwise young, healthy lives short...

34 degrees here, yipee skipee. It looks lovely out, the mild winter has gifted us with every flower-bearing tree in full bloom. I love when my huge pear tree flowers, because the blossoms smell like: (wait for it,,,,,wait for it,,,,)YES! PEARS!

Can't wait to get at the Craig troops once again today. (I must confess that at one point yesterday, I did feel compelled to suggest that Craig's hold was hardly constitutional...I could hear that little sound of silent night and crickets in the background on the other end of the phone, lol.)

Ah, well. God forbid an educated public. Meanwhile I will go a grocerying and continue to freak at the huge price jumps in so much--because we totally trashed our rail systems in this country, we have to depend on trucks--hence gasooooooline--
to pick up and deliver Our Stuff. And we are so
busted.Scary stuff.

Carry on, Barbaro Nation: so many voices yesterday--so many from the past. It was wonderful.

SENATORS, STOP STALLING!
Senator Larry Craig - famous for misbehaving in a different kind of stall - is using stall tactics on the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.
His threat to hold up Senate consideration of the bill (S.311 by Sens. Landrieu and Ensign) is putting thousands of horses in danger of ruthless killer buyers who want to buy horses at auction and haul them to Mexico or Canada for a gruesome demise.
Tell your Senator to Stop the Larry Craig Stall.
Please do it today: Click HERE and send your Senator a message.
And please forward this email to 10 of your horse-loving friends, asking them to do the same.
Thanks for all you do to protect horses.

WEDNESDAY JOE; DOING GOD'S WORK AS USUAL
*****************************************************
Wednesday, April 30th... The end of another month. 115 horses rescued so far in 2008. 63 adoptions. A girl who lives at a shelter for troubled kids said on a recent visit: This ranch is like a shelter for troubled horses.

More horses are coming to us today from race tracks, and one older mare will arrive from a feed lot. We are scrambling for space. Poop on top of poop. Monday night on TV a man was talking about our crappy life. Unemployment at an all time high. Americans who live on the streets at an all time high. Gasoline, rice, eggs, crime, the man on TV was depressing, so I switched over to yet another rerun of Law And Order. And then yesterday we lost a foster family. For almost 4 years this family has taken excellent care of our horses. But the lady says rising prices of hay, grain, and gasoline have conked them on the head. Their young daughter is not so young anymore, and this fall she is off to college. The lady says sorry, they can no longer provide for our horses. And so this weekend the 3 horses will return, and we are so grateful to this family for all they have done for us.

more to come

((((Sandra and Chief))))

Western winds started cranking up at 4 AM today. For the next 2 days 60 MPH winds are expected. And just south of Reno there is a wildfire. Combined with these winds, I'm worried. Hoping it doesn't affect MHR. Smoke from these fires is debilitating.

Nice article about the Freak. Safe racing for all of the 2 leggeds and 4 leggeds.

April 30 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Those of us who have seen a grass fire know that when one flame is smothered, another can break out in a different place. It takes trained minds to perceive where the next will happen--not so different from our daily lives. Sometimes it is hard to do anything new because of the emergency work. This is all part of the business of living. We never quite reach perfection--not all at once. Even if we do, we are off to something else that needs more help, more work. If it were not for the moving and stretching of time, perfection might become a dead nothing. The Cherokee would tell you not to build your campfire near loose tinder. What earthly purpose is there in starting a fire with a match or a tongue, in places and in ways where we have no business?

No one ever saw an Indian destroy something the Great Creator gave to man for his needs.

TODAY AT AQUEDUCT in New York, 7th Race....

Miss "Bella Attrice" is looking for her first win.
Bella is a 5 year old filly, gorgeous black satin coat, trained by David T.Duggan, ridden today by Carol Cedeno. I met Bella last August during my visit to Saratoga with FOBs' Marion, Susan H. and Carol C. Bella was stabled at Oklahoma Stables at Saratoga Racetrack at the very same time and location that housed Curlin and Rags to Riches (remember them?).

Anyway, GOOD LUCK TODAY, BELLA ATTRICE.

Believe in Barbaro!!

OK I just called the CRAIGOIDS...uch. How can they work for such a man...

####
OK: I am going out for dog food among other things, and maybe this THIS will stimulate Jerri to go into labor and produce her Magnum Opus....OK let's ALL go out, and maybe that will do it.

I haven't seen anyone--of the Peeples variety--near Jerri: I totally admire such control. Jerri does seem to be doing some lateral stretching.....

Come on baby.

Ken Z:) Let me thinnnnnnk....Curlin and Rags to Riches....yes, somewhere in the 'cobwebs' of my old brain...those names DO ring a bell:)

I will share your wishes for Bella Attrice this day:) Run like the wind.....love every moment.....and please, dear horse, come home safely!! :)

A really tasteless skit on David Letterman last night. He showed a pic of Colonel John, and then pictures of what would happen if he didn't win the KD. (Pics reflected what we are fighting here). There was little to no laughter from the audience.

I went to the Late Show website, and at the bottom clicked on Feedback. Left a comment. It really surprises me that in NYC, a writer/s could be so out of touch. I know there have been many full page ads in those papers.

After he came back from the commercial break, you could tell he was nervous and quite subdued. I am betting someone said something to him during the break.

Completely reprehensible and insensitive.

Posted by: Margie at April 30, 2008 3:51 PM

Margie - I rarely watch Letterman and didn't see last nite's "skit" - but appreciate your input here and I will also go to website and leave a comment. Shame on them ! Clearly they are running out of "material" when they must stoop to something like this.

Lynne Brown...yes, isn't it so true, the mind is an amazing thing...LOL.

Now, I meant to say BELMONT Racetrack, not Aqueduct.
7th Race....and Bella is 8-1 odds on the turf,1 1/16
distance. And, Edgar is riding a different horse in that same race, too. It's a 12 horse field, lots of competition...Bella will need her jet skis coming out of the home stretch in order to capture first prize. Let's pray that she has a safe trip :)

JOE REDUX:
****************************************************

Times they are a changing. Horses and gasoline were never before in the same sentence. Horses and liability insurance were never before in the same sentence. Because of gasoline and auto insurance, horse killers Wade Giles and Manny Phelps have both raised their prices. The mare coming to us from a feed lot today was priced at 50 cents a pound. I think we will name her May, because May is a day away, and because she looks like a May. A sweet old gal you can picture baking cookies with an apron.

I also bought a rooster, and apparently he was too nice. Nice roosters are unable to earn money. A combination cock fighting and horses on their way to Canadian slaughter feed lot. Never will they make the cover of Better Homes & Gardens. The rooster was to be disposed of, so I said put him in my truck. The man said twenty dollars. I said why, you are going to kill him anyway. The man said twenty dollars. And so the rooster is now in our barn, and we named him Twenty Dollars. Because of steroid injections he is probably 16 hands.

Holly Meeks is off to Ireland. Brian Gill flies to Austin. Patti Lu gets to look at horses in San Diego. Tom Hayes is already in Washington, looking at tractors. Mikka Thorson goes with her family to ride horses in Wyoming. Joe & Cathy Shelton will be in Woodland, scooping poop, fighting flies, watching yet another episode of Iron Chef America. Today could be a perfect 70 degrees.

Another girl who lives at a shelter for troubled youths. She asks: Can I pee behind your barn?

Joe: Um, we have indoor plumbing. You can go inside.

Girl: No thanks. I always wanted to pee behind a barn.

We all have our dreams. Mine came true on Sunday, when Jill Droubay brought us the most perfect cherry pie. Jill drives from her home in Elk Grove to a bakery in Tracy. Kandi Sweets is the name of the place, and you have to bake the pie for almost 2 hours and give it an egg wash. Unbelievable stuff. Better than peeing behind a barn. Better than Alicia Keys on the radio. What would we do without the little moments in life?

Joe

Some of this, Some of that:

Top Left: Now that nice weather has come, all the time horses are breaking water floats. Here is Forest Gump trying to make a mud bath.

Top Right: In April we have helped 15 horses who live at other places find new homes. Here is Alexis with her new gelding Red. Alexis is a sweetheart, and so too is Red.

Bottom Left: Recent adoptions from our ranch include Turbulent City, who gets a great new home with Onica. We call him Turbo. Onica is a student at UC Davis.

BRAVO to the connections of Big Truck, who are looking at the bigger picture even as they celebrate their colt's entry in the Kentucky Derby...and Big Truck will get a great post position, too!

Gotta love these people...

Found this on one of the Legacy poster's note. Love it. And it is a plan, for sure.

Act

BELLE NEWS FROM ONE OF TRACEY'S FRENS!!
******************************************************
I just talked to Tracey. They got a late start but everything went very well with Belle's surgery and the prognosis is good. Georgia handled the outing like a champ and they will be home this evening. Tracey will have some after care to take care of daily, but things are looking good for an excellent result.

Tracey will post more details later this evening.

Hay Fambleeee

Craig aides very sweet and receptive today. Not a single hint that they are tiring of the barrage of calls over the past few days. I spoke to a lady whose voice I recognize from yesterday just a few minutes ago, as well as a gentleman whose voice was very recognizeable and pleasant. I asked each if they are getting a lot of calls today and both said "just about as many as yesterday" YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY :)

Posted by: Cheryl Jones at April 30, 2008 7:09 PM

Cheryl,
I have a feeling they are on our side( I hope they are not playing us) hopefully they can change Craig along with us. My fingers are raw but I must keep calling. They have been very nice to me and have given me the time I need to express myself. On ward Hooooooooooooooooooooooo

Just called Sen. Craig's office - got a chipper aide and she took the info. Again, kept it short and sweet but at least my small voice was heard.

EXTRA WEDNESDAY 4/30 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List NOW POSTED below and at this DB Thread:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=22870.1

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB Thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:
ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Wednesday 4/30/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Wednesday 4/30 Extra HAHS List

Prior HS History - All new to 110th Congress. No HS history yet - except - Sen. McCaskill voted Favorably on the Bill getting it out of

Fax: 202-228-6326 Phone: 202-224-6154

IF you're done with today's ABR/AAHS Instructions & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to post 2 of the thread noted above for a good alternate target list of Senators compiled by AWI/SAPL.

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! GO GET EM.

Do it for GEORGE and JOHN and BARBARO
And all the ONEs we never got to know . . . .

Chief is home. The dr. ruled out vestibular syndrome. said he had a stroke. The dr. let him come home as I live just a block away and said he would have kept him for a few more days for observation but he being 90 pounds was uncomfortable in the wire pen he was in. He is much better but still has a little problem with his rear end swaying and weak on one leg. He wouldnt eat this morning and so I went to the vets and got him some canned I.D. meat foot. He ate a can of it. He did eat a nilla wafer last night. The dr. said although he is much better he is still not out of the woods yet. I think he is better and at home because of the power of the FOBs prayers and candles. I am so grateful to all of yole. He is very still and quiet for chief. Is this normal after a stroke? also, he is on cortizone for a week. By the way he can have all the nilla wafers he wants for awhile. Thank all for you for your love and concern. Chief will write you a note when he feels better. Keep him in your prayers as it it kind of shaky right now.

I have called Craigs number several times and there isnt an answer. Is it 202-224-2754? Again thank you all thank you all so much for your love and support. Its really lonesome when the people you know do not understand but yole understand. ###jonna, when I give chief a nilla wafer I always think of you -like well he ate his nalla wafer so I guess he isnt too bad off. Chief has been laying outside under his tree and he just came in through his doggy door and one of his legs went almost under him and his rear swayed. Then he got okay but he looked like "What in the hell???". It is 95 degrees so I had him come inside. He also has a step up to come through the doggy door and half the time he trips but he staggers on in. I would like to name all yole by name here that have supported us but just know I thank all yole. What would I do without each and everyone of you? Bless you all.

Regarding RERUN...I met the president last year when visiting Old Friends last April, and at that time she indicated that she felt slaughter to be a necessary evil. I don't like that attitude.

I have emailed asking if that is still the stance for this organization.

I believe they have a new president since that time, but I felt the information should be shared.

Hay Everyone:) I just got this via e-mail from Lj...jock4hire....I thought yole would enjoy this, 'specially those of you who are fortunate enough in this life, to actually OWN your OWN HORSE:)

RULES OF THE STABLE

1. I am human. You are horse. What I say goes. Please take that into consideration when you are standing on my foot.

2. Spilled grain is not "fair game", especially when it is spilled in another horse's stall. It still belongs to that particular horse. You have no reason to go in and eat it.

3. Poop does not need to be hidden. I clean your stall every day. I will find it. Do not hide it.

4. I do not need your help when I clean the stable, nor do I need your supervision, or even your presence. I have been cleaning the stable and stalls ever since you lived here. I know what I am doing. Standing at the door staring at me, will not make me clean faster.

5. You do not have to break in to the store room to get at the feed. Meals are given at specific times of the day. There is a schedule. You know the schedule. I know you know the schedule. You know that I know that you know the schedule. There is no need to help yourself.

6. Water buckets are not toys. Neither is the gate, pitchfork, wheel barrow, whatever is in the wheel barrow, fence, or the occasional dog.

7. The wheel barrow is there for a reason. Please do not try to move it while I am cleaning your stall.

8. Because I have just come out of the tackroom doesn't mean you automatically get food. There is other stuff in the tackroom. Stuff you don't want: like wormer, fly spray, shots, and medicine.

9. Sheath cleaning will NOT be enjoyed...by anyone.

10. Water travels through the hose. If you are thirsty, do not stand on the hose. The water buckets will fill much faster.

11. Not everything has to be high drama. None of the following things will kill you: fly spray, plastic bags, balloons, hoses, squirrels and other small rodents, or bright blue tarps.

12. Although I understand the need for you to relieve yourself, it is not necessary to hold it in all day until the moment I finish cleaning your stall and put away the wheel barrow.

13. Accidents happen. However, I'm not altogether sure you're not trying to kill yourself. Next time you decide to impale yourself on some sort of object, please try to do it when it's not hailing, midnight, the weekend, or Christmas.

14. While I appreciate your need to be clean, pooping in your water bucket does not make my job easier, and it deprives you of water. Please find a new spot.

15. Whinnying as loudly as you can in my face does not make me feed you any faster.

16. I have to wait patiently too, while you are being shod. There is no need to bite me.

STRATAGY FOR THURSDAY MAY 1 AND FRIDAY MAY 2

PHASE II OF OPERATION “CRAIG”…. From the National Horse Protection League

Tell your Senator to Stop the "Larry Craig Stall.”
Please use the remainder of this week to complete “Operation Craig”. Call your own Senator, especially those that are supporters, and ask them to Stop the Larry Craig Stall!!

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!

Thanks again for all that you do!

Tracey is on her way now to pick up Belle and Georgia. They will be put into a different stall at first so won't be on cam quiet yet. Things went well with Belle but has to be in a different stall for the time being, this is to make sure her hoof will do good on her bedding, then will be back into her own stall with our little Georgia.
Tracey will be turning the cam off around 7:00 Florida time so please don't call as there isn't a problem. Spread the word to everyone to be on Belle's cam. She has a small surprise she wants to share with everyone so please stay tuned until the cam comes back up. I wonder what it is?

### Sandra...when I was in High School (we are talking decades ago) my Schnauzer had a stroke. He went in circles for a while, but he ended up being okay. He was also blind and diabetic (unrelated to the blindness). I remember the stroke as being not his biggest challenge. I was his primary caregiver. Good luck to you and Chief.

Update on Erin

A note on the site has this message: "CaringBridge will be unavailable Saturday, May 3, 2008 from 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM (CDT). Thank you for your patience!"

I'm not sure what that means, but we may not get an update this evening.

I'll post if there is one.

Hiya, FsOB! Wow, it is wild to see that Michael Matz's horse is in the #8 position! It's weird to see #20 for Big Brown. My late Father would've said that the far spot would not be a good placement. Tomorrow night I start to prepare foods for Derby Day: Derby pie, Bourbon Balls, Benedictine Cheese Spread, etc. My country ham from Gwaltneys is already here. Yum, yum!

#### Bless yole, Sandra & Chief! What thrilling news that Chief is back home and that you don't need the heater right now. What is weird is that Nikita Isn't having a good day once again.... I really can't gauge it, perhaps she strains her knee when we aren't here or stiffens from less activity during the work week.
Margie, I'll try to send a note to David Letterman's Web site. Truly tasteless, sophomoric humour, he should realize that he has crossed a line.
To Maribel: Are you planning a trip?
To Rob: Yes, I totally understood what you meant about Sen Craig's "stalling" tendencies. I suspect that his wife may want to geld him.
To Judy Scott: I second your kudos to Laurie H. for last night's memorable tuck-in. ####

Drinks hardly any water and is not going to the bathroom. Tomorrow should be better. I think he is just worn out from the hospital stay and tests. ###almost time for the Derby . I dont think I will ever watch it that I dont see Barbaro flying down the track. And he did fly. check in with yole tomorrow.

Hi Sandra:) I'll watch for your e-mail....*CHIEF* is sleeping alot because he is probably just 'exhaustepated' from being away from his own home and his own wonderful Mommy...his body is 'healing' just like ours when we've had something bad happen....bodies heal when they are sleeping....does he like popsicles? Maybe some sugar-free popsicles would taste good to him, and they would get some fluids in him too? Anyone....Aunty Cheryl....Aunty Jonna...???

Murphy likes to eat ice sometimes in the summer when it's hot...I give him small pieces of ice and he chomps it right down...

Anyway, I hope you sleep very well tonight, BOTH of you....and please DO check in tomorrow, Sandra, or we might just have to place you on 'restrictions'.....you'll be 'grounded'!!! :)

SAFE HOME TO FAIR HILL TO OUR BELOVED NICANOR!!!!!

Posted by: Nancy in CT at May 1, 2008 3:05 AM

Front page of the Palm Beach Post today has a great article about Old Friends - "Is this heaven? If you're a retired horse one step from the slaughterhouse, it is." Talks about how Ferdinand is the inspiration for Michael Blowen. "Blowen eventually plans to have a vacant stall, statue and memorabilia as a tribute to Ferdinand but even now he honors him by taking care of his son, Bull in the Heather."

Sandra, prayers for you and Chief.

Janice - awesome picture of your baby, hope he is adjusting to the cast.

Kudos to Big Trucks' owners trying to something to help the retired racehorses. I got to see him break his maiden at Saratoga and a friend of mine picked him out at the sale for his owners.

Lynne Brown....Bella Attrice came in 5th today in her race at Belmont in NY. A spirited run, Bella was 4 across coming out of the final turn, then ran out of gas in a gallant effort just the same.

Best news: Bella arrived home at the finish safe and sound along with her jockey, Carol Cedeno.

Carrots and peppermints prior to supper!! :) Sure beats people food...lol.

## Mike C.,

Is Dick Dutrow the guy who didn't have Barbaro in his top three for the Derby in 2006?
