Barbaro Updates: 571

updates are now here.

Update 3389: A detailed look at each of the Derby runners as they continue to prepare for their biggest race: Daily Derby Notes: April 28.

Update 3388: A nice article on Lentenor: Destined to romp: For Lentenor, homestretch is down the road.

Update 3387: Wet, Wet, Wet. That's what it was like this morning, and cold and windy! Thankfully we have the Polytrack, and while there was water lying on top, it rode very well. At one stage a breezer came passed me as I was galloping, and I did not hear it coming. I had six sets, two went to the gate and all went nicely. We had a couple of freelancers help us out and I helped walk a couple of horses between my sets (while I put my outer clothes in the dryer). Anyway, all in all not too bad a morning's work despite the grotty weather.

I did receive a text from Louisville. Andy Durnin, a friend who is there galloping Tres Boraches who is now preparing for the Preakness, alerted me to this article: SLAUGHTER vs. RESCUE, excerpt:

"Let me tell you something, if they're not careful, you'll see another Ferdinand," said two-time Derby winning trainer Nick Zito, the original conditioner of Little Cliff.

Update 3386: Steve Haskin reports on the goings on as we close in on Derby week: Kentucky Derby Trail: California Comets.

Please keep calling and writing. You can also help celebtrate Barbaro's life on April 29: 4/29 CALL TO ACTION ALERT.

Morning pre-birthday skritches to the BBH, and regular skritches to Sir JH, Gorgeous George and the rest of the gang in Equine Heaven.

For them:

MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR MONDAY, APRIL 28TH

Fans of Barbaro, you have done it again!!! You were called to action last week and YOU rallied!!

A resolution that promoted the continued slaughter of American Horses for human consumption overseas was defeated at Friday's meeting of the National Conference of State Legislatures. Great job everyone!

Today, we are asking you again to help us mobilize and take part in a national effort in honor of Barbaro's birthday. In order to create massive impact we must prepare and gear up for Tuesday's effort. Please cross post this alert far and wide!!

On April 29, Barbaro's birthday, there will be a national effort to urge Congress to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to stop American horses being transported to Canada and Mexico where they are being slaughtered for human consumption.

While the Humane Society of the United States focuses on targeted grassroots outreach to certain individual members of Congress, HSUS has asked us to take a special part in this effort which will be to focus our energy on the biggest impediment to this essential legislation being passed in the Senate, Larry Craig, who has put a hold on the bill.

HSUS is calling on all Fans of Barbaro to bombard Senator Craig's office with phone calls on April 29 urging him to allow S. 311 to move forward. If enough people participate, we could shut down his phone lines for the day in a massive show of force, demonstrating just how many people support the bill he is undemocratically blocking.

Tuesday, April 29, please call Senator Craig's office at 202-224-2752 and tell the aide answering the phone: "I'm calling to ask that Senator Craig allow S. 311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to move forward."

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!

Thanks again for all that you do!

Hiya, FsOB! Well, it's Monday, it's raining, I have to go to work, but still feel queasy. Egads! May each of you have a productive day. Tonight I have to write my letter to Sen. Craig, with cc's to Senators Dodd, Lieberman, McConnell, & Bunning which I'll FAX to each of them tomorrow. I'll try to reach Sen. Craig's office by cell phone from outside my workplace on Tuesday. (I can't be engaging in any sort of Federal legislative advocacy in a State office building.) I'll also celebrate Nikita's birthday tomorrow.

#### To Janice, thanks for the kind thoughts for Kita. How is Kaiser doing with the splint? ####

Good Morning,
My excitement over Pepper's Pride's accomplishment is overshadowed by the sadness of the sacrifice of Bossy Bush and the utter lack of a showing of concern by the industry...except for this Famblee.
It's a shame that Pepper's Pride's record was marred by this. It's utterly reprehensible that Bossy Bush's death was glossed over.

Thanks to everyone who helped raise awareness and money for the Fallon feed lot 5 + 1. We have the money to bail them out but we need to raise $635 by tonight to transport them to safety. Please help if you can and please cross post. Any amount will help - it all adds up. We are so close to bringing these beauties to safety. Please check out EA:Save slaughter bound horses by 4/26 on the ABR. The thread is http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages/?msg=22407.399
To help, please go to www.paypal.com and send funds to equineangel22@yahoo.com.

Good Morning, Frens.

It was one year ago, that we began our earnest prayer as our Beloved's health began to change.

His heart was speaking to everyone who loved him. He was getting ready to step out of this otherplace. Somehow, our hearts knew it.

Please, let us gear up to put forth a bit of extra effort. BARBARO's legacy is a valiant FIGHT for LIFE. Our connection to him is Love.

...another point to make this AM...

I surely wish that one of the big horseracing publications, such as BloodHorse, would do an article on the media's callused disregard when someone such as BOSSY BUSH falls.

Yes, they DO bring out the tarp...to shield the crowd from the scene...and that is that. Where is the honor? Where is the concern? THIS lack of love for THE HORSE, is just so sad.

...and yet, be comforted. BOSSY BUSH steps into Thisgoodplace, taking the LoveoftheFrens with her.

Have a beautiful day Dear Frens. We are so blessed to be here.

RIP BOSSY BUSH. Run with BARBARO.

Your FOB Fren, O

HONOR BARBARO'S BIRTHDAY by donating to the special birthday fundraiser for the MO Horse Heroes. You may contribute as little as $5. for each horse you'd like to sponsor...

The Fans of Barbaro have done a fabulous job helping to support these victims of the horrendous double-decker accident in the fall of 2006 ~ many of the horses have been happily placed in their forever homes, but many others are permanent residents at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and need our continued support.

Please read the thread by clicking on the blue link...what a meaningful way to observe what would have been Barbaro's fifth birthday by helping to maintain "the least of these, his brothers and sisters."

Thank you for caring about these heroic survivors!

I have good news concerning the Seguin 11 that were rescued a couple of weeks ago. The pregnant mare that was rescued foaled Thursday night. Mom and baby colt are doing great. Of course we think he is the most beautiful baby in Texas! Mom was named Phoenix and the new little guy is named Kasey. Congratulations to Dixie who is fostering them, plus 2 others from the rescue! I love babies!

Time to start another week of contacting Congress re: S.311 and H.R.503.

Kaiser is starting to get used to the splint and getting around better, which is comforting to us. Now we wait until his next xray in 11 days to see if there is any change.

Destined to romp
For Lentenor, homestretch is down the road
By Amy Wilson

Lentenor, a yearling full brother to 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, is like most of the yearlings on Mill Ridge Farm: running, playing, enjoying childhood while he can.

The last time the cameras were on this newly foaled colt, he was all legs and simply could not believe how much spring he was getting out of them. Now, this full brother of Barbaro is a yearling and he stands for the camera like the young thoroughbred male he is, behaving fine but wishing he was somewhere else, like out in that empty impossibly green paddock running with his buds.

Still, his heritage tells him to stand and let others take a look. That is their job. His job is only beginning.

The newly named Lentenor, last year's son of LaVille Rouge by Dynaformer, doesn't know it's Derby Week. Or that he is full brother to a legend that had every gift but for that one step.

He's just this yearling out at Mill Ridge Farm, owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson, the same family who let Barbaro live as long and as well as he did.

For now, says Mill Ridge general manager Headley Bell, Lentenor's job is like every other one of the 3,500 foals born in Kentucky last year -- to "grow and play like the children they are."

Every day after lunch, come rain or shine, he is let out of his stall with a dozen other promising yearlings and plays through the night before being reluctantly asked to come in for breakfast. There, he's examined for nicks or strains, fed again and allowed to patiently pace until afternoon rolls around when he and his cohorts are taken individually to the paddock and let go. No one pays much attention to who is shoving whom or who is fastest around the far tree.

The homestretch, for now, is something Lentenor does only when he gets up from a late evening nap.

Good Morning FOB's
I hope you all had a good weekend. Every horse at SCR has been kissed and hugged for another week, Hans my big boy stood infront of me while getting his new shoes put in andjust let me keep kissing his nose as he looked at me. Our farriew said he was going to sleep, and his bottom lip was quivering. He is such a people horse with a personality that just does not stop, we went for walk to. Four others had their shoes changed, they were all so good. I learned alot from our farrier he is very educational and smart. A good day all in all. I LOVE ALL THISE HORSES!!!!!!! They make me so happy!

Good Morning my dear Barbaro, five years old tomorrow how incredible. I hope you the herd in Equine Heaven celebrates your birthday with a big party. I love you.

Please think of the horses today at New Holland. About one third of them will go to slaughter starting tonight and through the next few days.

Please think of #396 and #394 who died in Canada last week.

I have since found out their names.

#396 was Rockpile.

#394 was Impeach Willie.

Please make your calls today in loving memory of two thoroughbreds who died much too young for the greed of man.

Good Morning All,
Good news regarding the Big Hairy Man, his blood sugar has dropped significantly in the past few weeks, from 350 (no wonder he dropped weight and peed a ton) to 60 (no wonder he was sluggish and detached). It looks like his pancreas is kicking in again so the insulin intake is dropping, dropping dropping! The vet thinks his sugar regulation suffered a hit during his urinary blockages (This pancreas has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down) and needed time to re-stabilize. So glad that it's coming back to work :) !!!

Happy Early Birthday Barbaro!!! 5? Are you kidding?? I'm so getting old and it ain't fair...

I didn't know that Barbaro and Big Brown were related. I know it means nothing, but there is a familial resemblance, so I side with the first poster of the day for the KD.

For Barbaro, almost five years ago born to this earth, thank you for showing the world what a true champion is. Thank you for your commitment to life and for opening our hearts, bringing more awareness and right action for all equines. Tomorrow will be a day for the horses in your honor.

I hate to be an idiot...but WHOM are we calling today?

Posted by: jonnagrey at April 28, 2008 3:47 PM

Good Morning, ABR Famblee...:)

Lorr...Thank you for giving those two beautiful horses names...Rockpile and Impeach Willie...we are so very sorry, babies!

I am sad this morning, Famblee...A TV station from Sacramento, CA aired a lovely story Saturday evening about a local girl, twenty-four years old and her TB, 'FRODO' traveling to Lexington for the Rolex Olympic Trials there...lovely young woman and of course FRODO was a beauuuuuuuutiful horsey:) They were hoping to qualify y'day to be in the Olympics this summer! The woman's Mom travels with her....cute little ladeeee....

Yesterday, while competing, Frodo fell, he was put down and the young woman suffered a broken jaw/broken clavical/broken ribs and collapsed lungs...she is in 'stable' conditon and will heal....but it is her HEART I am most concerned for, as her beloved horse is in Hevvin now:(

It just made me so sad, as I spent a good part of my childhood in Sacramento and felt that 'geographic' connection to this young woman...and of course, since meeting Barbaro, I fall into love with ANY HORSES I see!!! Frodo made a 'cameo' appearance in either a Lord of the Rings movie, or one of the Harry Potter movies, she was very 'tickled' about his 'stardom':)

I am trying to locate which hospital she might be staying in, and hoping to send her a note...if I'm successful in that, I'll post here so if anyone of you might like to write her, I betcha she'd surely appreciate some hugs....

O.K., must ready to zoom....everyone, have a good day today!

Thanks for reading, Famblee:) I just feel so badly for this young woman...and we all know the 'mark' Michael Matz left on the Olympics doing exactly what this young woman was attempting...

Chief is not doing well. Talked to his vet this morning and she said he might have a pinched nerve in his back. Or maybe just osteoarthitis. wants me to try rimidal again with pepcid at least for a few days. He tries to walk and his back leg just goes out from under him. we will see. It has been cold here and maybe when the weather warms up it will help.

EXTRA MONDAY 4/28 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List is now posted below and at this DB Thread:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=22745.1

Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311/HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a "letter of support" to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB Thread noted above.

Use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-828-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR/AAHS Directions and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR/AAHS daily lists.

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:
ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Monday 4/28/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Monday 4/28 Extra HAHS List

Prior HS History - Sen. Klobuchar is new to the 110th Congress. The other Senators on today’s list all cosponsored S 1915 in the 109th.

FLORIDA (2nd part)
Senator Mel Martinez

IF you're done with today's ABR/AAHS Instructions & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to post 2 of the DB Thread noted above, for a good alternate target list of Senators compiled by AWI/SAPL.

Pls email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net re specific details re your HAHS contacts, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told the legislator "supports" the bill, did they tell you they only consider input from constitutents, or that he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! GO GET EM.

Do it for GEORGE and JOHN and BARBARO

The Big Hairy Man thanks you, Renee :)
The crazy thing is, he dropped that way without changing the insulin dose or food at all. Vet told us not to up the insulin when he was at 350 because she thought his pancreas might be kicking in. Right on.
Now that we decreased his insulin he's moving around the house (wow)and stuffing his face in a catnip bag. He never looks good when we are trying to balance insulin. When he was out of control at 650 (!) he looked physically fine, which is oddddd, but at 60 of course he looked doped. I wonder what he is now, my guess is in the 100's or so because he's finally acting normally.

I hate to be an idiot...but WHOM are we calling today?

Posted by jonnagrey at April 28, 2008 3:47 PM

Hay Jonna - hope you're feeling better.

Today's official ABR/AAHS directions are to mobilize for tomorrow's OFFICIAL 4/29 Barbaro's Bday Larry Craig Call-in, in conjunction with the HSUS. Get a mass email together; print hard copy flyers; call and "guilt" all your family and nonFOB friends - get all your GH people to call. Today's the day to get that all together.

As far as what else we can do today re DC contacts -

(A) If you are in a State group, you should have rec'd this week's special instructions from your Fearless Leader re a "private" offboard email list. If you are NOT in a group and want to receive this weekly special list, pls contact me and/or Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net to be included in the distribution list.

(B) Today and every weekday - you can "do" the extra daily target list from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter; today's is posted at the DB, here:

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=22745.1

and in my Comments post (scroll up to Post by C. Jaffe at April 28, 2008 5:54 PM).

And there's also a good alternate target list of Senators from AWI/SAPL, that I post daily at post 2 of my daily "extra HAHS List" thread at the DB.

HOPE THAT HELPS! (we all know what idle hands do . . . hahaha!)

It all sounds familure. After coming down from a high all I want to do is sleep, to high I get edgy.

Not good to speak to soon as Dick Dutrow is doing. As we all know things can change quickly. :)

How are you? good to see you as always.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at April 28, 2008 7:29 PM

Whoa, 860- that's officially the highest level I have heard. I know at 650 the attending vet was getting a little weird on me- "ohmygod this is *shocking* did you know he's a diabetic? did you do anything about it??" well, dude, at last check he was 120 and he didn't exactly announce, "say, I feel 650 today." He tells me when he's low- he hides it when he's high. Tricky.
VERY glad that you are not 860 anymore!!! :) That had to feel just AWFUL!

Bad news on Aquarian, who broke his leg while working with KY Derby bound Anak Nakal. Please Pray Frens:

http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/article/44894.htm
The news isn’t good for another of Zito's trainees, Aquarian, who broke his right foreleg while working last Friday with Kentucky Derby candidate Anak Nakal. The trainer reported that Aquarian isn't doing well.

At the time he was injured, Aquarian was thought to have suffered a condylar fracture. Owned by Tracy Farmer, the colt is a 3-year-old winning son of Fusaichi Pegasus that brought $685,000 as a weanling at the 2005 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

Asked to elaborate, Zito said, “I don’t want to talk about it.”

MONDAY @ JOE'S
**************************************************
Monday, April 28th... We need to catch up on things which need catching up...

This coming Sunday, May 4th, will be a big party at the ranch of Jodi Tuft. A Celebration Of Horses. There will be vendors, including Higbys, Vacaville Tractor, and Sundowner Trailers. There will be a silent auction to help horses. Demonstrations include roping lessons, farrier lessons, and a chiropractor will give you the inside scoop. Friends Of Tbfriends will have a booth, and hopefully even I can show up. For the free food of course. And to see Rascal Flatts performing on the main stage.

Okay just kidding about Rascal Flatts. But you will have a blast. All by herself Jodi Tuft has built the largest training center in our area. A beautiful ranch she has, and her address is: 4203 Rio Dixon Road/Highway 113 South. Dixon. If you get lost give Jodi a call at 707-688-1741. She will guide you in. The party is from 10 to 5. I hope to see you there.

I need the following to please get in touch with me. The free horses who need new homes fast has gone bonkers. These names might not be spelled correctly. Leela in Sacramento. Merrisa in Georgetown who has a dad who wants a horse. Brenada in Woodland or it could be Brinnada, you own the yellow cat. Parker in Elk Grove, and you have 6 acres. Madison with the boyfriend who works for Netflex. And I am embarrassed to say, either Jan or Pam, I have you mixed up with others. But you live in Walnut Creek, and you love to eat sushi. I can make the free horse thing happen for all of the above. My cell is 530-383-2120.

Hillary in San Antonio, your shoes are on the way. Megan in Tucson, your shoes are on the way. Michael in Los Angeles, I found the book you want, but I need a mailing address please.

Jessica in Oregon, the mare you were wondering about is named Tolder. I do not know how to get in touch with you, but I hope this helps.

The best writer in the world is Fugly, and you can read her at fuglyhorseoftheday.blogspot.com/

The second best writer in the world is Patti Lu, and I am trying to coax her into writing a daily journal. Patti works with untrained horses all day, and then sends us letters describing what it feels like to slam into an arena wall. She is a riot.

Congratulations to Jessica Slaughter (yes she hates her name) who on the internet found for free the horse of her dreams.

Congratulations to Hannah in Vacaville, who from Tbfriends found the horse of her dreams.

Congratulations to a nice family also in Vacaville, who from Tbfriends found the horse of their dreams.

A photo will be coming to me of a thoroughbred mare with her one month old foal. They are in the San Francisco area, and a new home is needed. When the picture arrives I will show it on my morning journal.

I have all of these little sticky notes on my desk and computer. I think we are caught up. Yesterday was 91 degrees, and today might be 78. More horses are coming to us this week from race tracks. More horses are coming to us this week from feed lots. Upcoming May auctions include Turlock, Petaluma, French Camp, and Roseville. Enjoy your beautiful Monday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Recent arrivals from feed lots, and they have been coming to us in decent shape.

Top Left: We named him Billy Ball, and there is a racing tattoo which says he is 6.

Top Right: We named her Nona, and she is on meds for an infected hock. Nona will soon be leaving us for green grass with a foster family.

Bottom Left: We are not sure of his breed, as there is no racing tattoo. We named him Truck, because he loves to run right over you.

ANOTHER LOVELY AND HUMANE ASPECT OF THE PROFESSIONAL HORSE SHOW WORLD. IT NEVER STOPS. (from FUGLY)
***************************************************
Monday, April 28, 2008
OK, let's talk about the TWH show industry...

Disclaimer for those of you who are easily confused and angered...I personally do not have any experience with Tennessee Walking Horses. Never been on one, not once. Have been to a TWH show but have never worked at a TWH barn. So this is a guest blog from someone who has done those things.

Here's what I do know. The TWH shows are notorious for abuse. Always have been. Has it changed? I don't know. You tell me, if you are involved.

I also know that this is another breed where riding yearlings and young 2's is rampant and there is a lot of money in winning the 2 year old stuff. You all know my opinion on that.

Oh, and now we're on to my personal opinion...I just plain think they look &&&&ing ridiculous. Sorry. It's a nice breed of horse. I'm not bashing the breed, not a bit. The ones that are flat shod look like they'd be lovely pleasure horses.

How to sore a TWH - read the comments, they're REALLY educational.
Interesting reading for the legal types - the appellate court smacks down an exhibitor who got the boot for soring.

Kudos to Friends of Sound Horses - a group that is trying to end soring and encourage the natural exhibition of the Tennessee Walking Horse. They are outing abusers by publishing the suspension lists on their web site and you guys KNOW how much I LOVE people with the guts to do that! Bet they get a lot of lawsuit threats, too!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From a reader:
My first horse was a TWH but not the quality that would do well in the ring. So after being around the shows for a couple of years I decided that I would buy a baby and bring her up starting with halter. I sided up to a friend who has been training for many years and she agreed to help me with B____. I also had another horse, a 4 yr old that I had been trail riding for a year that was a very Pacey horse. Most of the horses that are pacey can be worked with to make a good gate. So we started B____ learning halter, and R____ learning how to walk like a walker.
What I didn't know was what she was doing to her horses in addition to what we were doing when I was there. So here is the bloody truth of the walking horse industry.
To get the horses that are "straight going" = tends to trot to swing = lateral movement. They will put chains on the back legs to change their balance and make them reach up under themselves. This is not a terrible thing. It does tend to make the pastern area tender from the movement of the chain.
To get a horse that are pacey or have to much "Swing" they will put heavy shoes on the front and use rollers or chains to "Square" the horse up.
Now these are flat shod horses. The ones who are swinging to just right in the square department. They use chains and rollers to enhance their movement.
I admit I did all of these things because there is no permanent damage, and it doesn't make them sore, however there are the "other things" I mentioned.
I didn't realize what the leg wraps were for and it wasn't until almost the end of the first show season that I finally discovered what it was all about.
Kerosene, Diesel, Mustard Oil, koppertox, and other harsh chemicals are placed in the pocket of the front feet just above the cornet band and in the small crack going down to the frog. Then they wrap the leg in plastic wrap, with a quilt and leg wrap over that. The horse will stand with this on their legs for 23 of 24 hours. They take them off to work the horse the next day and often put them back on. They will do this the week or so before the show. Horses that are shown every weekend are subject to this every they get over being sore and the effect on their gait wears off.
Most of the horses skin peels, cracks, and bleeds. After the horse has been "sored" they often won't stand at all in their stalls, because their feet hurt so bad. When they come out of their stalls they can barely walk and the trainers will whip their legs to make them move on. The can't stand still in the cross ties because their feet hurt so they shift back and forth. Now while the horses are sore they apply the rollers and chains to make the horse show more action in the front and "teach" them how to "go".
The horses that you see the most are the padded horses, they are the ones that have the huge front leg lift. They do the same things to these horses to a greater degree. They also do other cruel things, like pressure shoes, and bands.
Pressure shoes have bebe's welded to the underside (next to the hoof) at the white line area. So that when the shoe is applied it puts pressure on the white line and makes the horse "hot footed" so they will spend a short time with that foot on the ground when gaiting. They will often do it in addition to light chemical use because it doesn't show up as easily. They can put pressure on the foot without causing bleeding or scars.
The Bands are placed across the top of the hoof to help hold the shoes on because the shoes are very very heavy. Some flat shod horses have bands because they are considered lite shod but the shoes are still very heavy.
The Bands can and do often put pressure on the hoof wall and can make the hoof break off. Especially when the toe is grown out to 6 or 8 inches. This is often the practice because it again changes the break over of the foot and makes the horse have to pick up the foot higher in order to clear the ground. It also speeds up the front feet in order to get them out of the way for the back foot to come down under it.
There are of course other things that I don't know, but what I have witnessed make me pull my B____ out of the big shows when she was two because it was clear that in order to win I would have to participate in these practices. Now keep in mind I wouldn't subject any horse to this kind of treatment but B____ is my baby. I purchased her when she was 4 weeks old. I went to the farm at least once a week to play with her or just be close to her until she was old enough to be weaned. When she was four months old I brought her home and she has been with me since. I did take her to a trainer when she was two because I didn't think I could "finish" her, but she stayed there for two weeks and the trainer told me that I could leave her but it would be a waste. He wished that all the two year olds knew as much as she did when he got them.
During the two years before I got B____ and the time after I poured myself into every book, or, article I could find to learn health care, training, and just anything I could so that my horses wouldn't end up like the ones that we see on the rescue site.
There is more to tell but it I can't remember it all I am sure as I think about it I will remember.
Oh, speaking of.... Blinders... half and full. They use them to keep the horse from seeing the ground so they will pick up their feet. The goal is to get the horse to break level or above with their knees I have witnessed a horse in full blinders because he would tuck his nose to far toward his chest so he could see over the blinders.
There are over checks to keep them from getting their heads down to far
Long shank bits to make them hold their nose in and break at the pole. Twisted curb chains to keep them from breaking gait.
And it goes on and on.
I had a very interesting conversation with our farrier this weekend. We were talking about slaughter, which he is not for. His points to me were...what happens when states like KY are being over run with horses. He saw a man tie four to a fence he could not care for them and had to leave them, not because he wanted to he had to no money. I mentioned rescues and sanctuaries, he asked where? and responded with there are more horses out there than people realize, they will be dying worse deaths, slow and painful, then where are they going to be put? He told me that the bull bolt should do the job the first time if done right. Not all horse meat is eatable only the best untainted. What and where do the old sick horses go? This country is going to get over run with horses and will unfortunatley be forced to reopen the plants.He said there has to be a way to dispose of these large sick animals. He was just making points form being in the business so long and loves horses and is a true cowboy.
This is for discussion and points of view for us. NO I cant be swayed.
Jonna, with all due respect, it's a blog. There is a fair amount that is downright offensive, and for that reason, and because much of it defies general sensibilities, I don't often read it. There was a thread on the DB last week sometime, in which I noted that we all pretty much know where it is, and if we care to read it, we can go to it and do so. Of course I was challenged that my post was interpreted to mean that no one can link anything anywhere, and the writer took great offense at my note that I didn't care for the content of that particular thread. In my humble opinion, pretty much anyone can create a blog and write hust about anything and do so in a manner that give the appearance of authority and knowledge and experience. But that isn't necessarily the case, so I would just say "reader beware"
STRATEGY FOR TUESDAY APRIL 29
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBARO!!!!
Today, we are asking you to take part in a national effort in honor of Barbaro's birthday.
On April 29, there will be a national effort to urge Congress to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to stop American horses being transported to Canada and Mexico where they are being slaughtered for human consumption.
While the Humane Society of the United States focuses on targeted grassroots outreach to certain individual members of Congress, HSUS has asked us to take a special part in this effort which will be to focus our energy on the biggest impediment to this essential legislation being passed in the Senate—Larry Craig, who has put a hold on the bill.
HSUS is calling on all Fans of Barbaro to bombard Senator Craig's office with phone calls urging him to allow S. 311 to move forward. If enough people participate, we could shut down his phone lines for the day in a massive show of force, demonstrating just how many people support the bill he is undemocratically blocking.
Tuesday, April 29, please call Senator Craig’s office at 202-224-2752 and tell the aide answering the phone: “I am calling to ask that Senator Craig allow S. 311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to move forward.”
Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!
Thanks again for all that you do!
IMPORTANT RE-POST FOR THE NIGHT SHIFT/WEST WING...
PLEASE HONOR BARBARO'S BIRTHDAY by donating to the special birthday fundraiser for the MO Horse Heroes. You may contribute as little as $5. for each horse you'd like to sponsor...
The Fans of Barbaro have done a fabulous job helping to support these victims of the horrendous double-decker accident in the fall of 2006 ~ many of the horses have been happily placed in their forever homes, but many others are permanent residents at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and need our continued support.
Please read the thread by clicking on the blue link...what a meaningful way to observe what would have been Barbaro's fifth birthday by helping to maintain "the least of these, his brothers and sisters."
Thank you for caring about these heroic survivors!
April 28 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]
How frightening to be out of touch--but how normal! There are times and places we go through that are strange---both in feeling and understanding. We experience an uneasy feeling and want to rush back to the familiar--even though it isn't the place to be either. In growing we go through strange places and think unusual thoughts. Fear of the unknown has made us wary, questioning, reaching, for something to steady us, to give us direction and purpose. But we must expand our spirits, enlarge our thoughts to accept or reject what we have yet to learn. The American Indian has known the strangeness of new lands, new customs, has fought and lost--only to fight and win. Some are caught in between, but their staying power is in the Great Spirit who ever holds our hand and intercedes on our behalf.
I would that I could make the red people as great as the conceptions of my own mind, when I think of the Great Spirit that rules over us all.
Cheryl: it IS a BLOG: and the content was largely from an OWNER and participant in the TWH industry.
Is there actually anyone out there who thinks that these multiple-gated horses and TWH's exhibit their
gaits naturally? I can't stand to watch them at the NYS Fair horse show which has become huge, and lots of TWH are entered. Lots of them show in a total sweat, with copious amounts of foam at the mouth, and yes, generally wild-eyed.
It makes me ill.
Hay Renee
The words of your farrier kind of echo the proslaughter folks' I've heard the four horses tied to a fence story too. The only diffeence was that they were not purchased at auction and rather than bring them home to care for them, which the owner couldn't do in the first place which is why they ended up at auction.
The whole antislaughter campaign is a lot broader in scope than putting an end to slaughter and transport alone. There is an undercurrent that affects us all, which is the economy. That's why I'm sitting here at my computer at home wondering what I'm going to do next. But as it pertains to slaughter, the pros use this to their advantage, making statements to the effect that the cities will be rampant with "unwanted horses". We hear of things from all over the country, like from Joe Shelten in CA, and I know first hand of how the populations grow at auctions every week. It is multi-tiered, but the single-most prevelant reasons horses end up in feedlot are overbreeding and irresponsible owners. THOSE are the issues that have to be addressed. For the most part, those who are in the "horse business" can afford their care and feeding, always have been able to care for and feed them, but elect to not do so, when the horse is not "breed standard" or "productive". Those who can most affort to care for and assist with the care for those who are in need don't always. Many do but the vast majority do not. It is that element who has to redirect their energies from creating the big money winner to streamling and caring for what they already have to care for. The Jacksons are a stellar example of those who are responsible. I know many more. They and we will have to convince the horse industry as a whole.
saturday, at beauty's haven farm and equine rescue we celebrated "barbaro's legacy". we'll tell more about this in a bit, BUT please ago to www.wcjb.com and click on local news. scroll down the choices to abused horses and click on it. wait for the commercial, about 15 seconds and watch with horror as you'll see what theresa woke up to just hours before our barbaro celebration!!
it certainly changed the tempo of the morning!
if anyone can help out please go to their web site.
Sandra, I don't really know you or Chief, only from reading your postings, but my prayers are with you both. I know only too well the anguish or having a beloved pet at the vet when you feel that it is out of your hands. May God's light surround him and guide his care takers and may you be reunited and he be restored to full health soon. Try and think only positive thoughts.
Renee - I had a friend about a year ago tell me about the same things as your farrier did. I was shocked because that is what drew the two of us together as friends, the love of horses. And I thought I could talk with her and she would support me but now we do not talk about this issure at all and their is at least an estrangement between us. I believe where there is a will there is a way. And you have to have the will to battle something like this and except no compromises. I guess I just wanted her to believe that it can be worked out and not give me any excuses as to why it couldn't work. What a disappointment she was.
Cheryl Jones, Thanks for the kind thoughts and congrats. I'm pretty excited about the new babies. I haven't seen Smart Justice as of yet(only his workout video) but I heard he is a real looker. Hopefully he will be like his dad. My girls Kimmy and Mia are gorgeous. I just found out today that all three will be coming in mid May; I can't wait. While the girls are starting to train, Justice is still a baby. He will not officially turn two until May 6th. He will be going to a farm in Jersey until probably July.
Coby is all set to make his debut on May 20th. It's going to be a 5 1/2 furlong just to see where he is and if all goes well we plan on stretching him out in a stakes race. Bellagio will be racing shortly as well.
###
I seem to remember in the past that someone on the board had something to do with Smarty Jones. If they are still here, I would like to speak to them about Justice(Smarty's son). We have also I believe, obtained the services of Smarty Jones assistant trainer who will be working with Justice. She's very excited about it.
Til next time take care.
joanna - I agree 100%. I cannot stand any of the gated shows and do not watch them. Nothing about those horses "style" is natural and I think it is or should be considered abuse. I do not think those kind of people love their animals, it is just a business or an ego trip to them.
Ok - I'm a positive thinking kinda gal and don't like to dwell on the sad stuff for very long - at least not outwardly...
so here is a very cool email I just received when someone saw one of my (many) videos of Jaguar Hope on YouTube - I just had to share with all of you:
Jaguar Hope & Jaguar Key - our "Jags" were stablemates!
Hi Wendy!
Youtube randomly generated one of your videos of Jag - what a conincidence! I own a former stable mate of your horse, Jag. I call mine Jag too, his racing name was Jaguar Key. He was owned by the same outfit that bred your horse - Jaguar on the Run Stable. They even ran against each other (Oct. 7 2003) - your guy was third, mine unplaced (it was his second to last start before being sold for meat.)
Like you, we're schooling dressage. We went to our first show last weekend, and Jag was a champ - totally mellow and cool with the scene. Wish my riding was as good as his nature.
I board my guy at Wood End Farms in Illinois (www.woodendfarms.org), a charity that promotes the use of OTTBs in second careers.
And you can see pix of my Jag on Flickr here http://www.flickr.com/photos/skerik/tags/jag/
Anyway, all the best to you and your Jag, from me (and my Jag).
-Sarah
Prayers for Chief, all the poor souls at New Holland today. Thanks Lori for taking them time to research the identity of Rockpile and Impeach Willie, they along with all the other nameless horses will never be forgotten. And neither will Bossy Bush who ran her heart out only to finish second and lose her life, in the celebration of the winner, this was never mentioned, very sad.
Prayers also for Aquarian, I watched the workout on Friday where he got hurt, hoping for a miracle.
Please burn up Craig's phone lines tomorrow, the number of horses being slaughtered at the hands of foreigners is unacceptable and Barbaro's birthday will give us extra motivation.
Smooth Air missed a couple days of training with a fever but is fine now, stay safe and well big boy, can't wait to watch you on Saturday.
Hiya, FsOB! Can someone describe how Barbaro and Big Brown are related? I don't seem to remember that, I just know that I find Big Brown to be a gorgeous chestnut TB. I am preparing to write my letter to Sen. Craig now, to FAX in the AM to him, with a cc to Idaho's other Senator, as well as the Senators from KY (my birth state) and CT (my adopted state). Tomorrow I'll celebrate Bobbey's birthday as well as Nikita's. Peace, RMH
#### To our dear Sandra: I have just lit two candles for Chief, one from me and one from Nikita. I remember my vet telling me that strokes in dogs are quite different from those in humans; dogs frequently make full and prompt recoveries. Please know that I hold you and that dear, unique boy in my heart. He reminds me so of my late Illya Kuryakin, about whom I should write a book someday.
To Janice: Glad that Kaiser's splinting is going better for him.
To Lor in PA: Keeping Rockpile and Impeach Willie in my thoughts as I write this letter tonight!
To Jackie Tundra: Glad to hear that Big Hairy Man's sugars are getting adjusted.
To Lynne Brown: Sad to read about Frodo and his lady, Laine Asher.
To Lorraine & Otherlyn: Such a treat to see you both here again!
To Kate from Canyon Lake: Thanks for the joyful news about Phoenix and Kasey. ####
AN UPDATE FROM EQUINE HEAVEN...
Heavenly Foal Update!!! ~ 8:25 E.S.T.
Barbaro and Dr. Fager are currently with Gallant Secret in her Heavenly room......while the rest of the Heavenly equines at Heaven's Gate have their ears flattened against the Heavenly door!!! Slew, Northern Dancer and Secretariat are stacked one on top of the other, head to Heavenly head, trying to listen to what's going on in there!! Kelso galloped off to grab a Heavenly cup so he could hear better, oops, he lost his spot!! Swaps and Affirmed "squeezed" twofold against an already full door and you can hear Secretariat repeat the words, "Who's touching my leg, who's touching my leg??" Spectacular Bid is "piggy backing" Alydar so he can try and hear as well!! OH MY!!!! Swale and Capote have gotten down on their Heavenly knees and have worked their way underneath the group while affixing their ears to the Heavenly door....OH GOODNESS!!!! Our artist extraordinaire, Native Dancer, is sketching this "scene" as we speak...!!!
Oh no...someone's coming!!! Barbaro opens the door.................. SPLOOOSHHHHH!!!! Like a deck of cards, the group falls right into the Heavenly room, one on top of the other!! Scrambling to get to their feet, Barbaro replies......"Not yet my friends!!"
Well, we'll keep waiting!!!
I don't know if my letter will paste here or not, but this is what I am faxing to Senator Craig:
The Honorourable Larry Craig
United States Senate
520 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Craig:
I am writing to implore you to allow S. 311, which would amend the American Horse Protection Act to prevent the shipping of American horses to foreign-owned slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico, to come to the Senate for a vote. It is my understanding that you have placed a hold on this bill which currently has 38 co-sponsors in the United States Senate.
Many of the horses killed at these “plants” are not sickly, but actually young, healthy, and stolen from their rightful owners in the United States. I would never have imagined that there could be horse thieves in the United States in the 21st century! These poor horses are sold for “money on the pound” and their “meat” is shipped to Belgium, France, and Japan for consumption by so-called “gourmands”. Please note: I am NOT a vegetarian and some of the members of my extended family raise cattle in southern Indiana.
Although I have been pleased to call Connecticut my home state since I moved here in 1985, I am a native Kentuckian. I consider the horse to be a symbol of our country and its “westward ho” tradition. Horses have helped defend America in its past wars. Now horses are being used within some VA hospitals to help rehabilitate young Americans who have been maimed in battle in our country’s current in Iraq. I view this issue as one of great moral and ethical importance to our country and implore you to let the issue be decided fairly and promptly within the current Congressional session.
I need not remind you that this is a year in which the people of the United States will vote to elect a new President. I am very dubious that your hold on this legislation will prove helpful to the Republican Party as it seeks to engage independent-minded voters. Therefore, I am faxing a copy of this correspondence to Senator McConnell, from my birth state of Kentucky, as well as to the offices of Senator McCain and Senator Lieberman. Please note that Senators McCain, Obama, and Clinton are cosponsors of S. 311.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at my home at (860) 405-1875 if you or your staff would like more information about the merits of this legislation.
Sincerely,
Robyn Mansfield Hoffmann
