    Barbaro Updates: 559

    updates are now here.

    Update 3317: Power back.

Update 3316: It is "No Power Friday Day" in our environmentally friendly housing complex. Spent the afternoon in the warm HBPA office on the backside of Woodbine. Then went over to the front side to watch a couple of races.

Update 3315: As predicted nothing went out to train today. The horses that shipped in yesterday all walked. I went in and helped out a little bit. We also received two more shipments of horses who will take a couple of days also to settle in. On top of everything else the power went out in our apartment. We all know how much we rely on power, only when the power goes out. More later - Hopefully!

Update 3314: Darren (assistant trainer and my boss) arrived yesterday afternoon around feed time. I met him at the barn and for the first time at Steve's I helped to feed. Our horses are well fed for sure. Things will start to become a normal routine around here in the next day or two, although this morning I am anticipating just walking everything as the new horses just shipped in yesterday and the one filly we have had here worked yesterday.

We do have three runners in the Arkansas Derby this weekend, lets hope Z Fortune can get back on track: Z Fortune Seeks Redemption in Arkansas.

    Please keep calling and writing.

Happy Friday, everyone! Please remember on Free-for-all Friday that freedom ISN'T free for our beloved horses...the cost of their freedom is our unending effort to move the hearts of our elected representatives in the Congress, and to open their ears to the screams of the horses and the voice of the American people!

$1215 left to transport the 11 nevada horses to their next stop to freedom. All horses ransomed. Now we gotta move them--and this MUST happen today before 6pm EST(I believe)

Somebody correct me if that time is incorrect.
Come on Guys: we're moved the mountain on this rescue. This stuff is just foothills compared to what has already been done.

Every little bit helps. Or (HEY!) every BIG bit helps! Be a part of this wonderful effort.

God gives us horses and compels some of us to love them. Yet why does
The horse, an animal with such a big heart, live such a short life?
Perhaps it's because if our horses lived any longer, we wouldn't be able to
bear losing them. Or, perhaps it's because God wants to jump.
Perhaps God looks down on the fine horses we raise and decides when
it's His turn to ride. He gives us a few good years to care for and learn
from them, but when the time is right; it's up to us to see them off
    gracefully.

OK, perhaps not gracefully. Blowing into a Kleenex is rarely graceful.
But we can be grateful. To have a horse in your life is a gift. In the matter of a few short
years, a horse can teach a girl courage, if she chooses to grab mane and hang
on for dear life. Even the smallest of ponies is mightier than the
tallest of girls. To conquer the fear of falling off, having one's toes crushed,
or being publicly humiliated at a horse show is an admirable feat for any
child. For that, we can be grateful. Horses teach us responsibility. Unlike a bicycle, a
horse needs regular care and most of it requires that you get dirty and
smelly and up off the couch. Choosing to leave your cozy kitchen to break the
crust of ice off the water buckets is to choose responsibility. When
our horses dip their noses and drink heartily, we know we've made the
    right choice.

Learning to care for a horse is both an art and a science. Some are
easy keepers, requiring little more than regular turn-out, a flake of hay,
and a trough of clean water. Others will test you and you'll struggle to keep
them from being too fat or too thin. You'll have their feet shod regularly
only to find shoes gone missing. Some are so accident-prone you'll swear
they're intentionally finding new ways to injure themselves.

If you weren't raised with horses, you can't know that they have
unique personalities. You'd expect this from dogs, but horses? Indeed, there
are clever horses, grumpy horses, and even horses with a sense of humor.
Those prone to humor will test you by finding new ways to escape from the
barn when you least expect it. I found one of ours on the front porch one
morning, eating the cornstalks I'd carefully arranged as Halloween
    decorations.

Horses can be timid or brave, lazy or athletic, obstinate or willing.
You will hit it off with some horses and others will elude you altogether.
There are as many "types" of horses as there are people which makes
The whole partnership thing all the more interesting.

If you've never ridden a horse, you probably assume it's a simple thing you
can learn in a weekend. You can, in fact, learn the basics on a Sunday but to truly ride well takes a lifetime. Working with a living being is far more complex than turning a key in the ignition and putting the car in "drive."

In addition to listening to your instructor, your horse will have a
few things to say to you as well. On a good day, he'll be happy to go
along with the program and tolerate your mistakes; on a bad day, you'll
swear he's trying to kill you. Perhaps he's naughty or perhaps he's fed up
with how slowly you're learning his language. Regardless, the horse will
have an opinion. He may choose to challenge you (which can ultimately make you
a better rider) or he may carefully carry you over fences if it suits
    him.

It all depends on the partnership and partnership is what it's all
    about.

If you face your fears, swallow your pride, and are willing to work at
it, you'll learn lessons in courage, commitment, and compassion in
addition to basic survival skills. You'll discover just how hard you're willing to
work toward a goal, how little you know, and how much you have to learn.
And, while some people think the horse "does all the work", you'll be
challenged physically as well as mentally. Your horse may humble you completely.
Or, you may find that sitting on his back is the closest you'll get to
    heaven.

You can choose to intimidate your horse, but do you really want to?
The results may come more quickly but will your work ever be as graceful
as that gained through trust? The best partners choose to listen, as well
as to tell. When it works, we experience a sweet sense of accomplishment
brought about by smarts, hard work, and mutual understanding between
horse and rider. These are the days when you know with absolute certainty
that your horse is enjoying his work.

If we make it to adulthood with horses still in our lives, most of us
have to squeeze riding into our oversaturated schedules; balancing our need
for things equine with those of our households and employers. There is
never enough time to ride, or to ride as well as we'd like. Hours in the
    barn are stolen pleasures.

If it is in your blood to love horses, you share your life with them.
Our horses know our secrets; we braid our tears into their manes and
whisper our hopes into their ears. A barn is a sanctuary in an unsettled
world, a sheltered place where life's true priorities are clear: a warm place
to sleep, someone who loves us, and the luxury of regular meals. Some of
    us need these reminders.

When you step back, it's not just about horses it's about love, life, and
learning. On any given day, a friend is celebrating the birth of a
foal, a blue ribbon, or recovery from an illness. That same day, there is also
loss: a broken limb, a case of colic, a decision to sustain a life or
end it gently. As horse people, we share the accelerated life cycle of
horses: the hurried rush of life, love, loss, and death that caring for these
animals brings us. When our partners pass, it is more than a moment of
    sorrow.

We mark our loss with words of gratitude for the ways our lives have
been blessed. Our memories are of joy, awe, and wonder. Absolute union. We
Honor our horses for their brave hearts, courage, and willingness to give.

To those outside our circle, it must seem strange. To see us in our
muddy boots, who would guess such poetry lives in our hearts? We celebrate
our companions with praise worthy of heroes. Indeed, horses have the
hearts of warriors and often carry us into and out of fields of battle.

Listen to stories of that once-in-a-lifetime horse; of journeys made
and challenges met. The best of horses rise to the challenges we set
before them, asking little in return.

Those who know them understand how fully a horse can hold a human
heart. Together, we share the pain of sudden loss and the lingering taste of
long-term illness. We shoulder the burden of deciding when or whether
to end the life of a true companion.

In the end, we're not certain if God entrusts us to our horses or our
horses to us. Does it matter? We're grateful God loaned us the horse
in the first place. And so we pray:

    Dear God,

After you've enjoyed a bit of jumping, please give our
fine horses the best of care. And, if it's not too much, might we have at
least one more good gallop when we meet again?

HORSE ABUSE - an equal opportunity nightmare: Joe at TB Friends has taken in the 7 year-old mare Tapatio, who has been re-named Tap Dancer. Seems her right front foot is being eaten away by maggots...

SOOOOOOO, I looked her up on pedigree query, where it says she "injured her foot racing as a 3 year-old"...could this be the same foot now infested with maggots?

AND her sire was Cherokee Run, who also sired none other than WAR PASS!!!

WILL THIS NIGHTMARE EVER END??? I pray it ends in MY lifetime, but I'm beginning to wonder...

Prayers, please, for ALL horses...the well-bred, the unknown, the lost, the successful, the beloved...ALL HORSES!

    ### I am not a veterinarian--I don't even play one on TV ;oD--but if you Google "maggots medicine," you'll see a whole list of links to the use of maggots and leeches in modern medicine.

This does not mean that maggots that came to live in a wound thanks to random egg-laden flies is a GOOD thing, but it does not follow that TapDancer's lameness is related to the maggots inside her foot. The maggots are used in modern medicine to clean open wounds.

    ### I know Joe will take good care of TapDancer and she will be treated well by veterinarian Lisa Wallace. Whatever needs to be done to treat TapDancer and her injured foot will be done. I have faith in that.

    Hello All

We are Americans Against Horse Slaughter from Wisconsin. Our purpose is to educate and motivate the student bodies of America to get them involved. We are here to help fight the war to end horse slaughter in America! We are the Students of UW Parkside that have united with Debra from Wisconsin for this cause. We have created a Facebook group, set up petitions and are hosting a table on campus to reach out to our fellow students. We have declared ourselves the Americans Against Horse Slaughter from Wisconsin and we will post more information as we accomplish more.

EXTRA FRIDAY 4/11 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List now posted below and at this DB Thread:

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=22000.1

FIRST THINGS FIRST - Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311 / HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Sens who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Sen Mary Landrieu, sponsor of the Senate Bill. Similarly, IMO - ask Reps in that position re HR 503, to send such a letter to Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky, sponsor of the House Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB Thread noted above.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

    800-828-0498

    800-828-1887

    800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF LEGISLATORS below.)

    1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

    2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

    3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

    4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

    5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

    Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Friday 4/11/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

    Friday 4/11 Extra HAHS List

Prior HS History: All the Senators on today's list voted for the Ensign-Byrd Agriculture Appropriations Amendment in September 2005.

    NEW HAMPSHIRE
    Senator Judd Gregg
    Fax: 202-224-4952 Phone: 202-224-3324

    555 Dirksen Senate Office Building

IF you're done with today's ABR Strategy & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to post 2 of the ABR Thread noted at the top of this post, for a good alternate target list of Senators compiled by AWI/SAPL.

Please email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net with any specific details re your HAHS contacts today, such as what concerns an aide may have expressed, whether you were told that the legislator "supports" the bill, if they told you they only consider input from constitutents, if they told you he/she doesn't cosponsor due to a committee or leadership position, anything like that. I will make sure our strategy experts are duly advised; this kind of feedback factors into future plans.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! GO GET EM.

Do it for GEORGE and JOHN and BARBARO
And all the ONEs we never got to know . . . .

STILL LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH

HERE IS A PRAYER THAT I THOUGHT WAS SOOOO FITTING.... OUR DEAR HORSES
*****To Thee, my master, I offer my prayer.
Feed me, water and care for me, and when the day's work is done, provide me with shelter, a clean, dry bed and stall wide enough for me to lie down in comfort.

Always be kind to me. Your voice often means as much to me as the reins. Never strike, beat, or kick me when I don't understand what you want, but give me the chance to understand you. Pet me sometimes, that I may serve you the more gladly and learn to love you.

Make sure that I am properly shod that I may serve you in comfort.

And finally, Oh My Master, when my useful strength is gone, do not turn me out to starve or freeze or sell me to some cruel owner to be slowly tortured and starved to death; but do thou, My master, take my life in the kindest way and your God will reward you here and hereafter. You will not consider me irreverent if I ask this in the name of Him who was born in a stable. AMEN..
ALL OF YOU, THE F O B HAVE A SAFE & A GREAT WEEK END ....AND DON'T FORGET TO PRAY FOR ALL OF THOSE LOST AND FALLEN ANGELS .. MISS YOU BARBARO, WATCH OVER US .... DIANE

YES, I AM CRAZY IN LOVE WITH TB FRIENDS.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Friday, April 11th... Yesterday Channel 3 said we were going to be 75 degrees. What they meant was 75 below zero. A strong cold wind all day, and sweatshirts stayed on. We had a dust storm. Horses with gunky eyes, and fly masks came out of the closet. Channel 3 is now saying this weekend will be warm. Maybe 85 for Saturday. Flies are arriving from Bakersfield.

The winds have been crazy all night, and we keep losing our dial tone. After 53 cups of extra strength Folgers, you should see how fast I am typing.

If 4 new pictures do not appear below each day, just hit your Refresh key. F5 does it for us. There are e-mails saying I must be drunk. My descriptions do not match the photos. F5 will get you there...

From a major thoroughbred breeding farm in Northern California, we are in the process of buying a whole lot of horses. The farm threatens to have these horses sold to Canadian slaughter. There are broodmares and there are horses of racing age. Our foster families have been put on alert. And we are making room in our poop on top of poop fields.

Two geldings arrived from feed lots yesterday, and with the exception of neglected feet, both are in good shape.

Our vet Lisa Wallace is coming soon to take X-rays of our new mare Tapatio, and we call her Tap Dancer. Jenny Hartman found maggots eating away the right front foot of Tap Dancer. A deep hole in her heel, and who knows how long maggots have been feasting? Tap Dancer came to us last Saturday. She is unable to walk. Her sire is Cherokee Run, and he is the sire of champion 2 year old War Pass, a Kentucky Derby favorite.

And since we are talking Kentucky Derby, HBO has chosen this day to show a documentary on horse slaughter. It is said to be very graphic.

Yesterday in a Northern California chat room, 3 chatters (is chatters the right word?) came together to save the life of an older arabian mare. Holly Meeks provided transportation, and the mare is now with our friend Megan in Fairfield. She arrived in okay shape, and is probably 20 years old. There is good all over, and we hear about it everyday...

Mike Baker brings us kids from a youth shelter, and I must hurry and spruce up the joint. Horses living in our yard, and there is poop on our porch. A giant mountain of dirt from the dust storm, and our windows are so dusty you could draw faces. Enjoy your warm, windy, dusty, flies are making themselves comfortable Friday, and be sure to hug your horses. Home is where the crock pot is...

    Joe

Top Left: I will often be showing you pictures of horses in Northern California who need good homes. These horses are always free, but you will be screened. Here is Red, he is a 19 year old thoroughbred, and he loves kids. My cell is 530-383-2120.

Top Right: I love this picture. Play Misty For Me lives in our yard, and she is sharing carrots with our friend Becky.

Bottom Left and Bottom Right: Two new arrivals from feed lots, and both are in good shape. Both need a bath. Top Left is Bear, and he has clumps of dirty hair hanging from his belly. Top Right is Cola, and he is wearing mud from 1989.

One is a gray gelding who the killers just bought. We can try to buy him later. There is alos a gray mare, and 3 others that we are trying to ID right now.

If you can help us raise some funds quickly, we will try to save as many as we can.

There is a place for each and every FOB in paradise. I can't believe what has happened here over the past 2 days.

Forget the Cherry Garcia. I'll have whatever Jonna and Renee are having. Make mine a double.

    Bless TB Friends!

How does a daughter of Cherokee Run and sister of War Pass end up so neglected she has maggots eating a foot away and cannot walk?

"Our vet Lisa Wallace is coming soon to take X-rays of our new mare Tapatio, and we call her Tap Dancer.

It is said to be very graphic."

    You get a triple...........hiccup

Posted by: Renee Antaya at April 11, 2008 10:02 PM

I checked the cam at MHR late last evening. The sun was just down. There was a single white horse in the football field, and between the shadows and last rays of light, this horse looked like an angel in heaven. It was the most beautiful thing to see, the horse's movements were gentle.

Posted by: Margie at April 11, 2008 10:05 PM

I wish I were more of a hiccup type. But I'll have a triple Earl Grey tea, and some Fig Newtons.

Alex, I'm so sorry the penthouse is without power. Get some candles, and have some pizza delivered. We'll be right over!

    Good Night Everyone,
We have so much to be proud of again. We save horses don't we. It feels so good with all the yuck going on in the world to come where there are good people with great big kind hearts plus it is peaceful and fun.

I hope you all have a good weekend. Thank God for all of you my famblee.

Good night and good weekend Dear fren Barbaro. I love you. If the weather permits I have alot of noses to kiss tomorrow and grooming to do.

I am privileged to send in the last $50 whihc will cover the last amount needed to get that nevada BUS MOVING!!

This is what it's about--to me--plucking these animals out of hell's gate and getting them home and safe.

God bless everyone who sent anything to make this rescue happen in actually about 3 entire days. Most amazing.

I know this tends to drive the profits for the KBs up, but from time to time--more often than I can really afford--I have to get in there, cheering and yelling and doing the Barb thing: GET OUT THERE!!!

May we all have a fine weekend. Guess what it will be doing here in cny? Wet snow. Yes! Just my favorite stuff in the world!! Wet snow!!! GRRRRR.

Damn I love my FOBs. Where would we be without the Joan, the Renee, The Lynne, the Comment Queen--all of you and so many more, all called into this war by that big bay colt.

I--like Lynne--feel so privileged to have lived during his time...

Oh, BTW: while i was at the TV station with the GHs, Heart nibbled a corner off the back cover of Edgar's NEW BRAND NEW, SHINY AND BEAUTIFUL, STRAIGHT FROM THE MAIL MY GUY BARBARO. OY>

I mean, childrens, what Is the Mouth Appeal of hardback book covers? I could market a dog food of that an dug up mud and twigs, and probably make a small fortune in the dog food biz,,,,

OK> i have to fall down now. Love, love, love you all.

(OK: didn't you LOVE the image of all of us Ladies of a certain age (as the french say) in our jammies, tossing Alex in a horse blanket? It did just sing to me...)

Kathy SC: re your beloved celestial kitty:

The missing never stops. Something reminded me today of Lacey, an older, elegant, tall, pale brindle girl who was dumped in an apt at Ft. Drum (yes, that's correct: 10th Mountain Div. in Watertown.) Someone got her saved and brought to the Vet on the Base, and a terrific TINY little southerner named--brain freeze here--and her baby and James, also in the service drove her down to me. I didn't even have her a year when OS claimed her. I don't know: maybe just because I had so little time to adore her...she was something...she is in my head almost all the time. What a leggy beauty.

Ah, well. So, the moral of thew story is that when our beloved animals must leave us, theere is always room to love another--but those who are departed leave a space in our hearts, just perfectly in their own, special, precious shape.

And that, dearest Kathy, that never goes away.
    xxoo

Jonna, please add terry cloth towels and human bedding to the dog food mix. With a sprinkling of kitchen cabinets.

The visual of using the horse blanket to toss 'someone' in the air is hysterical. And I just have a feeling that 'someone' would love it! :-D

    Prayers for Tap Dancer.

TEN HORSEYS...all clippity-clopping off the big truck...not knowing WHAT to expect....thennnnn:) they see *US* all in our Jammies...armed with HUGE BAGS OF *CARITS*....and *PEPPERMINTS*....the horses would be saying, "OMGoodness!!! PS: Yole, I scoured the HBO website yesterday for any intel on the purported docu on horse slaughter. Perhaps another production company did it, but I could find NADA in HBO Land. It would be wonderful, though, wouldn't it...wretched as it is, it would be a huge audience, and talk about targeted?????????

This really did me in. Didn't mention it, but April 7 was the 26th anniversary of the day my Saddlebred Roanie broke his leg in the pasture, just 7 weeks after my Sonny broke HIS leg in his stall . . . OY! That was a REALLY BAD SPELL!!!

So Renee - reading this one now (though I've seen it before) really got to me. THANKS, I needed that! (not being sarcastic)

######## Was it Renee or Padme who posted about a friend reunited with her 28 yr old Saddlebred via Craig's List? Please post about that again.

and THIS post REALLY got me going.

    [reposting]

Students join Americans Against Horse Slaughter!

THIS IS IT - THE STUDENT ARMY!

(shat took US so long? haha)

DEB - you sly strategist you - WONDERFUL to mobilize the students. It's a NATURAL!

IMO this will be our ultimate and most effective tactic in bringing public input to DC.

There will be a group like this on EVERY CAMPUS -

Not since the Civil Rights Movement in the 60's has there been such a worthy reason for kids to protest! I LOVE IT!

I really have to take my hat off to Debra for this new group of students at Americans Against Horse Slaughter.

    WOW!

We actually tried to do this at Northern Illinois University when we were fighting Cavel. One of our AZ FOB, Melissa, tried contacting them to get them involved. She did not get a lot of response to it.

    This absolutely brilliant!

    Hello Fellow FOBs,
if I may, may I ask for prayers fr a certain rescue cat? My nickname for him is Commentator because his is a "big talker"! Commentator came in as an emaciated stray, he is now very ill with a feline cold. He has no body fat and is very thin- a few days ago he was eating like a pig and talking all day, now he has stopped eating due to his sickness, he lies in a ball and does nothing. This poor little guy would like to survive if his body could make it through this. Please pray for him, I love him and want him to make it.

If anybody was wondering, I nicknamed him after the racehorse Commentator (who, I now realize, I have been confusing with Consolidator this whole time!). Consolidator was a very talented 3yo who won the San Filepe in record time~ the horse Commentator is a talented older gelding who has won big and is still in training.

PS: The Big Hairy Man continues to improve! :)
