Barbaro Updates: 553

updates are now here.

Update 3290: More great press from the Cappucino Kid rescue, who is now on his way to Old Friends: Rescued Cappucino Kid to Old Friends.

Update 3289: A rescue is ongoing to try to get a pony off a ledge. It has been there all night and crews are busy figuring out what they can do. News here: Horse Stranded, Crews Working Now To Rescue Horse. Discussion here: Urgent - anyone in Ohio?.

Update 3288: Aqueduct canceled racing today ahead of their biggest day of racing for the year tomorrow: Aqueduct Cancels to Protect Surface. A little snow mixed in the with rain here in Toronto!

Update 3287: A rainy grey morning this morning at Woodbine. We do have one horse here so far, she had the day off today but may go to the track tomorrow. I went in to check on her and explore the backside a little more. I watched a little training to be oriented with the main track and its proximity to our barn, which is very close. It is a large backside and there was a lot of activity despite the rainy weather. The meet beings tomorrow so it should be a fun weekend!

Update 3286: It is springtime and that means it is time for Keeneland, which opens today under threatening weather: Springtime for racing.

Curlin has arrived back in the States after his very impressive World Cup victory: Curlin Ships Back to Belmont from Dubai, excerpt:

"He shipped very well, drank a lot of water, and was feeling good walking around the shedrow," Blasi said. "He ate well last night, which I would expect him to do because he always has, and we're excited about getting him back to Lexington."

Please keep calling and writing.

Happy Friday FOBs - TGIF!!

Let's end the week with some noise so that Congress will finally pass S.311 & H.R.503 and provide protection for our horses.

Have a great day everyone!

###Good morning everyone. We had an overnight rain night before last and that means easy weed pullin' for us lucky ones with a day off. I LIKE working part time ;o)

###Thank you Alex for all you do for us. Hope you enjoyed Finger Lakes. I like their Web site and love the concept of a rescue facility at the track.

###Safe racing to all on the tracks and safe travels to those on the road.

Good Morning Everyone

I made a video for you guys that chronicles the trip that the MN FOBS made to Raindance Farms last weekend and the presentaion of the money raised from Laurie's "Tuck in Blanket."

Present on the trip were Myself, (dark purple jacket and Barbaro Hat) , Laurie H, ( tan suede barn jacket ) Becky, (magenta jacket) Linda J, (green sweatshirt) and Daryl Smoliak, (Washington DC baseball jacket) And the heart and soul of all the FOB were there with us!

Seems like its been a rough week around here so I hope that this video will make you all feel proud that you do make a difference each day and that we all do the best that we can to continue with Barbaro's Legacy of Hope.

Thanks everyone... Leslie in MN

Here is the link and the text from the description. (sorry its not blue though)

This slide show documents the meeting of Five Fans of Barbaro and the folks from WindChill Legacy Ltd on March 29th 2008. The contingency of FOB were there to deliver gifts of Love from all the people at Alex Brown Racing internet community.
This video is presented in Three Movements that represent my impressions of the day.

First, the meeting of the FOB and WindChills family and the support and love that we gave each other. We listened and talked and supported them with gifts from the heart of the FOB.

Next was the feeling that there is still much sadness and grieving in their hearts. I can even feel it in the other animals that are there. They know that Jeff and Kathi have suffered a great loss and are patiently and quietly trying to help them heal.

The last part is the happiness and hope that the newborn filly Layla is bringing to them now as they try to move on and move forward.

WindChill's presence IS HERE on this farm. You can see him on the sunset, in the clouds, or in the eyes of Walker or baby Layla.

The circle of life is complete

email addy for Erin's teacher doing the fundraising? Thanks::::

I truly believe that the survival and functioning of Erin's family is proof that God's grace is there for use whenever we ask for it to be given--and many time--just there.

How else could they be literally getting out of bed and keep coming at this wretched disease over and over again? I just send out that warm blanket of prayer that is one of the things we can do to keep them afloat. 18 months of this: oy.

Good Morning Gang. I hope the weather gets better. It sure is a mess for some. This morning the temp at 4AM was 19 here in NM. But thankfully we will have a clear, dry day. Maybe a little windy.

Safe racing today for all 2 leggeds and 4 leggeds.

Last day of work up here in the beautiful Sangre de Christo mountains. Then I commence vegetating for at least 3-4 days. Then once I get sick of myself, I will forge ahead. I spoke to the dogs this morning and told them from here on out we will NOT be getting up at 4AM. We'll just have to see how that works out.

The robins are out. It is definitely springtime in the Rockies now. Finally.

JOE CONTINUES;;;;;FOR FRIDAY.
****************************************************

More horses are coming to us from race tracks in Los Angeles. More horses are coming to us from horse killers Wade Giles and Lyle Carter.

We welcome 3 new foster families. Sara has 4 beautiful acres in Vacaville. Robin lives in Rio Linda, and she is building a new barn. Staci lives in Grass Valley, and on her 5 acres are 3 former race horses. Sara, Robin, and Staci will each receive a horse from us this weekend. Georgia Hartman and Ryan Andrews will provide transportation. I am trying to decide which horses will go to who. Just like that dating service on television, with brand new foster families it is important to find the right match. And since Friday is here, a decision must be made.

I always feel anxious when writing a paragraph thanking those who help us and help horses. Because in my mind I know I am leaving someone out. Cheryl Rankin in Auburn saves horses, including several pregnant mares this year, and yesterday I forgot to say her name. Also in Auburn is our long time friend Allison. If there is a neglected horse who needs a home, Allison has her gates open. There is Tori Baze and Paula Coombs. Robin Gill. Kelli Hunter, and Kelli is a full time student with 2 part time jobs. Still Kelli finds time to attend livestock auctions and help horses who need help. Kristen lives in Vallejo, and in 2007 she rescued 3 horses, and 1 so far in 2008. There is Caroline in Los Angeles, and Caroline has become a big time buyer at auctions and feed lots. Sarah McDowell lives in Utah, and she is coming for the 4th of July fireworks under the Golden Gate Bridge. Jessica Parsley does incredible work saving horses, and she calls herself JD Acres. Our friend Michelle at the race track, and she saves horses like I save reruns of Malcolm In The Middle.

I would also like to take this time to Thank Gabriella Howard, who lives in Augusta, Maine. A huge Thank You to Friends Of Tbfriends, for all you do for us. Rebecca Head, and it was great to meet you. Susie Ingersoll. The girl who sent us coffee from Oakland, the coffee is delicious, and Thank You for thinking of us. Jamie Watkins, a long time supporter. Patti Lu and Jodi Tuft, always there when we need them. Thank You to Dakota Blue, my little friend, and watch out for the Chicago Cubs this year. Thank You Catherine Moses in North Carolina. Teri & Dana Paquette in Texas, Thank You for all you do for us. Jamie Coughlin we love our plastic Pony Boy, and not once has he pooped on our shelf. Cynthia Miles in Maryland, we cannot Thank You enough. Ann & Robert also in Maryland, and you will always be in our thoughts. Bonnie Buron in Florida. Robin West is the Best. Mary Frazier in Moraga, she is so cute. Elizabeth Tuoto. Frances Harrington from Palo Alto. Henry Martin and Elaine Garrison, Thank You for your continued support. Lorenzo and Stephanie Breaux. Pamela Short, and Pamela would like the world to know she loves her gelding Rocky like crazy.

I would like to Thank the girl who calls herself Horsequeen 08. The girl who calls herself Brawny. And the girl who calls herself Last Chance. I wish we knew your real names, and Thank You for your support.

I would like to Thank Cora Mason, Becky Coombs, Allison Martino, Amber, Brianna, Maddie, and Julia. Your treats at our front gate, and our horses are forever grateful.

To Jenny Hartman, our number one helper, I hope you are feeling better soon.

A big Thank You to Lori Stewart in Iowa, for the box of fly masks and leg wraps. We really appreciate you thinking of us.

Most likely I have left someone out, and later when scooping 1,200 piles of poop I will remember. Please know Cathy and I are grateful for all that is done for us and for our horses. Enjoy your just right 75 degree Friday, and be sure to hug your horses. The Kings have won 3 in a row. Our world is begining to make sense again...

Joe

Horses rescued across America, and horses rescued with donations from readers.

Top left: Tyler lives in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Tyler saves her money and helps horses in need. She went to Gentle Giant Draft Horse Rescue in Maryland and adopted Jezzie, her best friend forever. Tyler also attends horse auctions. On this Friday morning we salute Tyler, and she makes us feel good.

Top right: Davina lives in Nebraska, and she rescued Jordan from a horrible situation. Here is a picture of Jordan, who will not stop eating.

Bottom left: From horse killer Wade Giles we bought this chestnut mare, and there is a racing tattoo which says she is 6. Our favorite female singer on American Idol is Brooke, so we named her Brooke. She is in poor shape.

Bottom right: From horse killer Manny Phelps we bought this pretty filly, and there is a racing tattoo which says she is 4. Our second favorite female singer on American Idol is Carli, so we named her Carli. She is in really good shape.

Subject: Yearlings to Slaughter

I just received a tip that 5 yearlings (possibly a couple are coming 2 yr olds) were purchased for slaughter at the Cranbury auction last night. They are apparently QH/appendix types. One is a very handsome buckskin w/white legs, friendly, etc.

They will be shipping out on Sunday on the first leg of their journey to slaughter.

UNLESS . . . . anyone is interested, they can be purchased out for $100 each. Told that they are long haired and scruffy from being out all winter but are nice under the scruff.

If anyone is interested in rescuing a baby, let me know asap, these kids don't have a lot of time.

If anyone could house one or two, let me know, I'm out of space right now,

Lisa

Late morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous Geo. and the rest of the stellar Heavenly Equines...

For them, here:

MORNING POST/SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS

STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY, APRIL 4

Back by popular demand.....FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY. This is the day that you can go back over your lists and make that extra call to those that you feel are getting close.

Since we are targeting Reps (see below), we specifically need help gathering the names of those Reps who you feel are close to cosponsoring HR503. Once we have this information, we can target this list and possibly see a quicker conversion for support. Please email all info on this directly to us through the DB on ABR.

Right now we have a tremendous amount of momentum. We must keep that going and not let up. For the present time, we will be targeting Representatives. The magic number of co-sponsors that we need is 218. We currently have 198. This is very achievable based on feedback from last weeks event. Also, please call those you met with last week and say thank you. Ask if there is any follow up information they need.

Please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!

Thanks again for all that you do!

EXTRA FRIDAY 4/04 NATIONAL TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List NOW POSTED below (please scroll down this post) and at the ABR/DB thread noted near the bottom of this post. [thanks to Julie C of HAHS for emailing "da list" to me while the group site is temporarily unavailable.]

FIRST THINGS FIRST - Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311 / HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB thread noted below.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF LEGISLATORS below.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Friday 4/04/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Great to see that Aqueduct cancelled "to protect surface" - what would it take for them to say they were cancelling to protect the horses and riders? Oh well, long as it has that effect, who cares what they choose to say!

April 4 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Our choices have brought us to this place. Other people affected us to some degree, but never so much as what we chose to do and how we chose to react. We are at the point the Cherokees call the hour of tsu du go ta nv, the place where we decide who is to sit at the forefront of our lives and guide the way. The hardest part is to stop thinking dilemma and start thinking and talking solutions. There is no room in problem solving for self-pity, not even revenge. Past events may have been wrong, but now we have to see it as change, not always our doing, but we have to handle it anyway. It is here that we decide to be happy, to be examples so that younger ones will want to follow. It is a worthy thing to be a good example. We may never know who will be watching.

Convince the world by your character that Indians are not as they have been shown.

Horse Stranded, Crews Working Now To Rescue Horse

POSTED: 12:04 pm EDT April 4, 2008
UPDATED: 1:02 pm EDT April 4, 2008

Animal rescue crews are gathered near Powhatan Point Friday, working to save a horse stuck on a cliff, on a hillside along Route 7.

The rescue crews are waiting for a group out of Maryland that specializes in large animal rescue. No one at the scene has the proper equipment to get to the horse that’s been stranded since Thursday afternoon.

The Emergency Management Agency, members of an equine association and a veterinarian all arrived to try and save the horse.

A member of Frog Pond Farm in Cambridge said that the horse has probably never been handled.

Once the large animal rescue group arrives, they plan to secure lines at the top of the hill and propel down to the horse.

“Our hopes are to be able to catch the horse, tranquilize the horse, secure him in a sling and on a board and then they’re going to get him down to the next full tier,” said Lisa Gordon of Frog Pond Farm.

Rescue crews hope that will allow them to get to a grassy, more stable area along the hilltop.

Once the horse is safe, animal rescuers said they want to get to several other horses living in an open area at the top of the hill so this doesn’t happen again.

I'm here... not lurking or shirking...lol. Tornados here last night. Little Rock was hit but am still not sure of how much damage. Everyone is still in accessment mode. We just now got the elec back on (40,000 without)and have been reading about the storms in the NYT and CNN. My house came out of it with no major damage but others were not that lucky.

I spent a long evening last night huddled in the hallway with three very unhappy cats..each in his own carrier. I'm not one to over react to storms having lived here most of my life ...but last night was serious. Please if you can say a prayer or send a good thought to all that were in the line of these storms...twolegged or fourlegged

Now...I'm having my first cup of coffee for the day at 3:20PM. I have missed my electricity.

Prayers for the poor horse stranded on the cliff. Bless his heart. Crossing fingers...

Crews Attempt To Rescue Horse From Cliff In Ohio
POWHATAN POINT, Oh. (KDKA) ― Rescue crews are on the scene in Ohio where a horse is stuck along the ledge of a cliff.

Officials say the horse was first seen stranded on the cliff at Powhatan Point above Route 7 late on Thursday.

Authorities tell us rescue crews were called in from as far away as Maryland to help bring the animal to safety.

Crews say they will attempt to repel down the hill, sedate the horse and lower the animal about 100 feet to the ground below with a rescue vehicle.

Market for Mare Milk Gives Rise to Equine Dairy Industry
by: Christa Lest-Lasserre
March 29 2008, Article # 11574

Nearly a dozen velvety black Arigeois broodmares and an approved stallion roam and graze freely across a 120-acre pasture in the French Massif Central hills. These horses are the foundation of Nathalie and Xavier Niaux's Domaine de Merens de Bibracte, an equine dairy, where up to 3,000 liters (750 gallons) of mare milk are produced for human consumption every year.

Heralded within organic food and alternative health circles for its nutritive and therapeutic values, mare milk is sold to European customers directly from the farms. Products range from raw, unpasteurized milk for drinking, to cosmetic items such as fragrant soaps and body lotions.

Selective breeding, positive foal handling, and transparency in their business practices have resulted in foals that are in as high demand as the farm's dairy products, Niaux said. The farm's foals have all been placed in families within months of weaning.
Although animal welfare groups such as the Brigitte Bardot Foundation and Worldwide Protection for Farm Animals are aware of horse dairy farms and the possible negative implications for the mare/foal relationship, none of the organization representatives contacted was willing to make a statement on the welfare risks, citing lack of research and available data in the industry.

As long as certain precautions such as not milking the mare excessively, supplementing the foal's diet, and providing plenty of high-quality pasture are respected, a dairy mare's foal should suffer no ill consequences of sharing its milk, said William Martin-Rosset, PhD, head of equine nutrition research at the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA).

The Niauxes said they and many others make every effort to work harmoniously with nature.

They begin milking the mares when the foals have reached three months of age.

"We start out slowly, on the first day just a few hours and (collect) maybe one or two milkings," said Nathalie Niaux. "Gradually we work our way up to about four milkings a day by the end of the milking period," which ends, along with weaning, when the foal is about seven months old.

No organization oversees horse dairy farms in Europe, and statistics on the number of existing farms are difficult to estimate, according to Chris de Cooman, owner of the mare milk farm Ferme de la Comogne in the Ardennes region of Belgium. However, de Cooman, a former executive in sales management who left Brussels 11 years ago to start her farm, has done some primary research on the industry and guesses that there might be about 10 horse dairies in Belgium, a few in Holland, and perhaps 10 to 30 in France. "The best guess anybody has is just counting the number of online shops," she said.

At any rate, compared to cow milk dairies, the existence of horse dairy farms is "just peanuts," she said. "It isn't at all the same business.... It's mostly city people who love horses who have found a way to live out in the open with the animals they cherish."

Update on Georgia and Belle for Trcey

i am sorry for making anyone upset..i did not realize you guys were waiting to hear from me...i watched george last nite off and on all nite..while i agree she could not get comfortable she did get some rest and today when she was out in the morning turnout she was an explosion of energy ..she stayed up the whole time but once laid for 20 min or so..she and belle got 3 hrs of turnout in the a.m.. she slept long and hard when she came in and was down most of the day..and for todays late afternoon turnout she did not lay down once..and they were out almost 3 hours this evening...there are several factors that georgia is trying to deal with..one is her new teeth they are all coming thru and she makes a god awful gritting sound playing with them..she is putting her toofers on everything...and one of those things she likes to chew on is herself..she nibbles her flank, her feet her cannon bones, her front knees, her belly and any other area she can reach..not to mention her newest entertainment is picking the shavings off of her...they stick to her like velcro since her clipping...that is the other 2 factors..1 being she has a whole new sensation of feeling now that all that 4 inches of baby fuzz is gone, and 2 the new bedding, dry pine shavings, they make me itch...also we are not bedding the stall as thick as before and we have rubber mats under the bedding..so george is having some trouble slipping on the areas that she has thinned the shavings at by laying or pawing...so she is getting used to the floor to say the least...she is on biopaste for her diarrhea,as well as probiotics, and her raninitidine for her belly..she has a great appetite and no fever...she is just kinda starting to find her way...i really think she is more uncomfortable due to the sudden heat we have been having and the bugs are coming in full force so she has a few new added things to deal with that she has not had in the past..so i would not get to concerned at this point ..it is all part of her growing up process..she was a bit delayed in learning of her environment and she has some catching up to do...so i am certain that she will adjust accordingly...but i am very thankful for all of you guys keen observation and thanks so much for still continuing to pray and support us...and please don't hesitate to notify linda or dianne or laurie if something does not seem right..the vet said we are not anywhere out of the woods yet..and the key to her doing great and getting strong is by catching an issue before it gets a chance to take hold..that is her best chance for survival is staying on top of everything...and with you guys out there keeping me posted about her so i can rest or run errands sure gets me thru this difficult time..and for that i am thankful...i am headed to bed but know that i get up 3 to 6 times a nite and i always check my monitor and watch them and if i can focus my eyes i read the posts too..i have had a long day and hurt my back soaking and bandaging feet so i am getting on the heating pad and try to get some sleep...again i am sorry if i worried any of you...

Top Bunk - 11 y.o. gelding in his 90th start

Heading for Hawthorne Racecourse (Cicero - Chgo area) Saturday to witness a wonderful rescue in progress - hoping the FOBs will be successful in claiming and retiring this old campaigner, Top Bunk, to keep him from winding up like poor Brave Miner. Keep fingers crossed and those who pray, please do, that he will come out of his race (the first, set for 1:35 pm Central time; will be on TVG) safe and sound, and that he will be claimed and retired. To follow the story, see thread in the Rescue Folder - Let's Give This Racing TB a Real Future

His pedigree and performance record are in post 50 of that thread.

upd8 re horse stranded on cliff

http://forums.prospero.com/AlexBrown/messages?msg=21689.971

update from Lisa of Frog Pond Farm, who's been on the scene with the effort to rescue Clifford, who's stranded on a cliff in Ohio.

More help is on the way - and he has been furnished with plenty of feed, hay and water, and we are assured he will continue to receive supplies pending culmination of the rescue.
