Barbaro Updates: 552

updates are now here.

Update 3285: A terrific chat with Brad and John Hennegan, who made the movie The First Saturday in May, which is going into distribution very shortly. DVDs will also be available: John & Brad Hennegan Directors, Producers and Writers, "The First Saturday in May".

Update 3284: A Thursday update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

Just a quick update for this wonderful Thursday morning. Molly has made a full recovery from her race the other day. She has come out of it great and couldn't look any better. We are not sure what our next move will be with her. Gator Nation has continued to train well and we tried to enter in a grass race for this Saturday but he didn't get in. We'll try again. Tail Tails is entered to run on the turf at Laurel on Friday and of course we are slated to get rain so it may be on the dirt. Either way, she is happy and training great! Rockin Fun continues his quest towards the races and so far does everything we ask of him. Who's Happy continues to tote Tim around the track, direction doesn't seem to matter as our new trick of galloping the wrong way only worked for a short while. She is strong. Rajasthan loves going accross the fields and so far has not skipped a beat. Our Diva has a strong personality and so far has managed to keep her teeth to herself behind her screen. Thank Goodness!!

Powdered Donut has turned the corner in the tight muscle department. She likes her new diet and we now can continue to push towards the races. I promise to shortly have the babies updated on this website.

Tonight is tax night (OMG), at least it will be over with. I don't know if any of you have seen the commercial of these two guys talking with big guys(taxes) hanging off their shoulders(all relating to the idea of a weight being on your shoulders). That is exactly how I feel about Tim's taxes. Wish us luck!!!

P.S. - Veiled Reference is for now on the farm with me and doing just fine. She loves all of her new buddies and has really filled out looking much stronger. She will have a great vacation.

Update 3283: I went over to the track this morning to get licensed and have a look around the backside. Security at Woodbine is pretty tight relative to other racetracks I have been, but I did end up getting my license so am now good to go. I went over to Steve Owen's barn, he was the guy I met yesterday and has been very helpful in settling me in. They had finished training but he introduced me to a few people over a cup of coffee. I also met Julie, the Stakes coordinator. She had been helpful prior to my arrival letting me know what I needed to bring to get licensed (a letter from a steward at Sam Houston estblishing I was in good standing). I also met Vinny, who will be our shedrow foreman.

All in all a pleasant morning meeting people and getting things sorted out. It looks like our horses are not coming until next week so it might be a nice quiet few days for me.

Update 3282: Steve Haskin previews the three Derby preps this weekend and also includes an interview with War Pass' owner. War Pass is set to run in the Wood Memorial this weekend: Derby Hopefuls Face Do or Die Weekend, excerpt:

"It's true that champion horses respond to that kind of adversity and somehow they prevail, but in this case, the horse we all saw at the top of the stretch was not the same horse we saw three weeks earlier who cruised home in 1:36 and wasn't even blowing at all. This was a horse that was in distress, and the most plausible explanation I have for that today is that he flipped his palate. We scoped him after the race and there was no congestion and no issues. But for a horse to be in that much distress, that, to me, would be the most probable explanation."

Please keep calling and writing.

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous and all of their fabulous cohorts in Equine Heaven...

For them, down here:

MORNING POST/SHELLEYA, DEBRA,WI/AAHS

STRATEGY FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 3

Congress reconvened this week and we ARE being heard!! We have two additional Cosponsors in the house! Great job everyone!! We MUST maintain our momentum and remain relentless in keeping those phones calls and faxes ringing!

For the present time, we will continue to target Representatives. The magic number of co-sponsors that we need is 218. We currently have 198. This is very achievable based on feedback from the Americans Against Horse Slaughter lobby event and have witnessed the cosponsoring of (5) MORE Reps since March 1st. We specifically need help gathering the names of those Reps who you feel are close to cosponsoring HR503. Once we have this information, we can target this list and possibly see a quicker conversion for support. Please email all info on this directly to us through the DB on ABR. You can also watch for our extra target list that will come via email.

Please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter when making your calls and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

New to the 110th Congress: Please ask them to cosponsor HR503

April 3 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Why must we judge ourselves by what someone else is saying? They only think. Is it possible to fit our lives into the narrow confines of theirs? Let us search our own souls. We have spiritual connections uniquely our own---deeper in many ways than those of people who want us to be like they are. But there is no way we can be like another person. We know right from wrong, regardless of how the world-at-large has tried to condition us. Nothing can keep us from hearing our own voices of common sense--nothing, that is, but the noise and clamor of outside voices. And yes, maybe some are inside. But they have no good purpose; they mean to destroy. We need not dally with trouble. We can refuse to be a part of anything that was not a gift of Galun lati--the Great Spirit.

To fight is to forget ourselves as Indians in the world.

Just called the Gov of NJ re Congo. The woman that I spoke with were most POLITE and actually receptive to a little chat about the vigilant and loyal nature of GSDs to their peeples. and that the caretaker--on the property without permission--placed himself in a posture with the owner which the dog naturally interpreted as THREAT: and did his JOB...; so who knows...perhaps the Gov. has already decided for clemency for this dog who was only doing his JOB>

Thursday, April 3rd...
A big Happy Birthday to our friend Jodi Tuft, who we have known since she was a kid, and now she is an older kid.

In 2003 Jodi bought 40 bare acres in Dixon. There was water and electricity, but not much else. 5 years later, and Jodi has created a thriving boarding and training center. Lots of barns, lots of trees, dozens of paddocks and pastures. Jodi built a beautiful house, and I would trade my autographed Bart Simpson t-shirt to have her kitchen.

Jodi did this on her own. Boyfriend Adam is there to help with repairs, but all by herself Jodi has developed the largest training center in our area. More than 85 horses at her ranch.

At least once a week for the last 15 years I have phoned Jodi and begged please, can you help me out? Injured horses, starving horses, horses who need transportation, stallions who need a private paddock, yearlings who have never been touched, older horses who have never been touched. Jodi always says you bet. Take yesterday for instance...

Our friend Aljean phones to say there is a man driving around the San Francisco area with 2 older horses in his trailer. The man tried to take these horses to Animal Control in Contra Costa County, but Animal Control would not accept them. The poor horses have been on his trailer for more than 2 days. No food. No water. The man does not have money for gasoline.

I tell Aljean to call the man back and give him my phone number.

Pretty soon the man calls and he is sitting in a parking lot in Richmond, California. He tells me the horses are both thoroughbreds, both older, and they are hungry and thirsty. I ask the man if he has enough gasoline to get to Dixon. He says yes.

I call Jodi and tell her the story. If Jodi had one dollar for every one of my stories, Jodi could buy another 40 acres. Jodi says you bet, the 2 horses could live together in one of her paddocks until Aljean can get them home.

Jodi phones later to say the horses have eaten 5 flakes of hay so far. They were happy to get off that trailer and stretch their legs. Today Georgia & Jenny Hartman will transport both horses to their new lifetime home with Aljean.

Maybe today, maybe tomorrow, maybe a week from Tuesday. I will phone Jodi with another story. And Jodi will say you bet.

Tonight Jodi and boyfriend Adam celebrate at their favorite restaurant. Happy Birthday Jodi.

I tell you all the time about Megan in Fairfield. Julia in Lincoln. Aljean in a town called Rescue. Nikki in Vacaville. Mike & Kathy Monoghan. Rachel Jeffers. Stephanie Diaz. Holly Meeks. Jodi Tuft. Patti Lu. Jennifer Wright. Ryan Andrews. The list of those who help horses is staggering. And they never ask for money. I told Aljean maybe I could get her some funds to care for those 2 older thoroughbreds. Aljean says forget it, she is happy to help. I told Megan in Fairfield about a sale on Equine Senior, and maybe I could find some money to stock her feed room. After all, Megan is taking care of 6 horses who belong to Tbfriends. Megan says forget it, she is happy to help. Whenever I offer anything to Jodi, she tells me to get lost.

Amazing giving people who every day are there to help horses.

And a special Thank You to our vet Lisa Wallace, who for only a small sum of money is going to help our blind mare Georgia. Georgia needs an operation, and Lisa says she is happy to help. Enjoy your beautiful 69 degree Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Top left: Jodi Tuft in front of the house that Jodi built.

Top right is by request: In July of 2006 we suffered through 13 straight days of 110 degrees or more. It was horrible. All the flies moved to Portland. Here is a picture of day 12.

Then and Now:

Bottom left: It was a year ago when Sandy adopted the very cute Mr. Thatcher.

Bottom right: Today Sandy and Mr. Thatcher are getting ready for the 2008 show season.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at April 3, 2008 4:01 PM

All,

I have been working with a rescue here in the Phoenix area. They almost went belly-up last month, so we need to raise some funds for this wonderful facility. It is 501 (c)(3)and is a horse sanctuary, operated by Jim Gath.

Jim works tirelessly for the horses. Many of them have actually come from other rescues, so Jim generously gives them a "Forever Home" so they do not have to go through that process ever again.

Please check it out and give a little if you can.

Thanks!

Good Morning Famblee

I'M HERE AND I'M CALLING

###Tom, so sorry to hear of your loss. Rest assured that Zinfandel has been greeted by all the beloved FOB furkids who preceeded her. They are rolicking.

I love Joe Shelton. I love his devotion and committment. What a network of like-minded folks he has developed.

Please call, fax, email, join a state group. Whatever it takes. Time is flying and this election stuff is really a huge distraction.

All - your words of sympathy means alot to us. My wife and I loved Zinfandel very much. As Mrs. Jackson stated, grief is the price that we pay for loving our animals. That is so true. We're comforted by the fact that it was so peaceful at the end.

Morning everyone...drizzly (is that a word?..lol)here in LR this morning. Expecting tons of rain today...possible flooding and tornados later. Sigh..it's spring here in the south...lol. Never boring.

If you haven't joined a state group...PLEASE consider. We need you to help us put an end to this vile thing they call slaughter. If you are in Arkansas please drop me an email. Tstockam@aol.com

Barb,

People are calling Gov. Corzine and asking him to kill Congo? Did I misunderstand or the woman wouldn't answer you? I guess I never thought to ask that question.

Thank you,

Good Morning Fambleee

Alex, happy to know you arrived in Canada and hope you are able to spend some time taking in your new surroundings.

Tom and Mrs. Tom, I'm so sorry for your loss. Zinfandel will be joined by soooooo many of my doggies who will show her the best places to run and play in hevvin. They'll guide her and keep her company, and reassure her that she'll see you again. What a joyous day that will be. The pain is terrible, I know. There will be a time when the tears are replaced by wonderful memories and laughter at all the silly, only-a-schnauzer-can-do tricks and pranks. She'll be with you always.

D'Anne, thinking of you and your family. Holding you close.

Famblee, thank you for all your words of comfort and support. I'm still reeling somewhat, trying to figure out what to do next. It's scary. The market is terrible, the economy sucks, jobs are very hard to come by. There are very few "open" doors, and the tining is just absolutely the worst. In the industry thati've spent the majority of my life, typically at this time of year the college graduates are getting snapped up almost the minute they're out of their caps and gowns. It's terribly frightening to think that even though I'm YEARS away from "retirement" I may be "unmarketable". Have to think of other options I guess. oh yeah. Thank you, Mr. Bush.

It really makes me sad to think I won't have as much to help others who really need it. For now, anyway. Oh, did I mention "Cobra"? YIKES!!!

enough about me. Thank you again, your kind words and support mean so much.

Later, Famblee

Daphne, That's what I asked her! I just had to know, when she said they were getting calls, so I asked if people were calling on the "other side?" Well, she didn't exactly answer it! All she said is that people were certainly leaving their opinions! "Tallies" seems to suggest that there are some on both sides, doesn't it???

HELP! Call the Governor of New Jersey, folks! Ask him to PLEASE spare CONGO.

EXTRA THURSDAY 4/03 NAT'L TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List NOW posted below (please scroll down this post) and at the DB Thread noted near the bottom of this post.

FIRST THINGS FIRST - Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311 / HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/ request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are at the DB Thread noted below.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF LEGISLATORS below.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Thursday 4/03/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Thursday 4/03 Extra HAHS List

PRIOR HS HISTORY - All the Reps on this list voted for HR 503 in the 109th Congress; their votes on HR 249 in the 110th Congress are shown below.

IMO - in addition to the usual spiel -

THANK them all for voting YES on HR 503 last time; remind them that although it passed the House by a landslide, unfortunately it was never enacted because never voted on in Senate; enlist their support AGAIN for HR 503 NOW.

THANK those who voted YES on HR 249, and remind them that HR 249 ONLY applies to WILD equines, and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to stop export.

Tough decisions for Shiloh Rescue

Posted by: Barb AZ, Chunky and Punky at April 3, 2008 8:06 PM

Our Preseedent: slaughtering wild burros, bison, mustangs and grey wolves. Isn't that this administration's way? Probably making way for some refinery peeples...

I am ashamed of my country.

Posted by: jonnagrey at April 3, 2008 8:08 PM

This Shiloh thing is terrible. So these mares were rescued to have their foals, and then they are basically to be disposed of?

Is it an issue of feed? Why wasn't enough held by for these mares and weanlings? Hay? Can't other rescues help them out? Couldn't some of these mares be shipped to other rescues? Can't other rescue groups help publicise the terrific problem at Shiloh?

In greyhound rescue we say, WE DON'T RESCUE THEM TO KILL THEM. I just DO NOT GET IT. Maybe someone who DOES can write me privately... I feel ill....

I just don't think I can take this today...

Posted by: jonnagrey at April 3, 2008 8:18 PM

####
Hay, jonna.

((((((jonna))))))

I don't think anybody has all the answers to all those questions. Shiloh DID put enough away. They have had these mares for months. (They were rescued last year.) Rescues can't keep horses forever. They need to find them homes, and we all know the rescues are full due to a lot of unforeseen issues such as the economy, hay and gas prices.

Lets not despair, but instead, let's try to spread the word. A friend of mine here in Phoenix is looking for a horse. I suggested that she consider one of these mares.

That's all we can do, but sometimes that is a lot.

Keep your chin up. We're not sick to death of you today, yet! LOL

Love ya!

Barb:

Feeding my greyhounds AND four foster dogs who do not yet have homes, but would NEVER be turned over to someone else, or euthanised because the right home has not yet come up....these dogs can't do cats. Every GH application I have has cats...

No, it isn't apples to apples...but I remember the emotional load of that rescue on EVERYONE, SHILOH included, of course...

I think maybe we--as FoBs need to ask questions before we launch into emotionally and financially supporting rescue groups who may not really be ready to go the long haul with their new charges.

I will be doing this. I'm sorry. But I can't deal with a rescued horse, having been taken out of hell--a healthy, fairly young horse--kept at a rescue as funds/food/space/unravel.

Don't the other rescues have to deal with the same demons? Joe uses foster families. MHR works their butts off with their monthly fundraisers for FEED.
There's ways.

re the dilemma re the Shiloh mares -

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=21587.1

It is NOT a matter of money - please read the thread - including the latter posts; this is a problem of disposition/dangerousness - apparently these mares were previously really abused by people. Some abused horses - as opposed to wild ones who haven't had negative human contact - may really remain too dangerous to maintain. Please read the thread before judging, everyone.

Shiloh came to the Board seeking help in training / placing these mares who are (after all this time) not even halter-broke (!!!) Because they were previously abused and it is said they will do anything to avoid human contact - charge, go through walls - etc - this is truly a dilemma.

But Shiloh did come seeking help, and I respectfully suggest anyone concerned please check out the thread, and see the constructive suggestions coming in re specific trainers, homes for small numbers, etc., that are being discussed.

######## Jonna I am emailing you privately - or go ahead and give me a call.

CJ, Thanks. I didn't think they were asking for money either. They just need to place these horses. It specifically says to "experienced" horse people only.

It is sad that these mares have been treated so. Also, some have just never been broke to ride or handle.

Posted by: Barb AZ, Chunky and Punky at April 3, 2008 9:43 PM

I agree with C. Jaffe. Because of the abuse of humans, some animals (horses included) will never be safe. Just like pitbulls that have been abused and trained to fight...they may never be safe for adoption. Or there are VERY few people cabable or trained to handle these types of animals.

That leaves the rescue in a spot where their only choice may be to euthanize. If the rescue's mission is to rescue and adopt, then they can't keep all horses forever or they will fill up and won't have the room or the finances to take horses that are adoptable.

We can be grateful that they have tried and that at the very least these mares were not submitted to the ultimate torture-slaughter.

Posted by: Jennie (Kentucky) at April 3, 2008 9:48 PM

####
Jen, you are correct. These horses were still SAVED. I think Shiloh has done all that they can do and they have done it right. The last thing they need is to adopt out a dangerous horse (yes, there are some) and have somebody killed or injured.

I think we have all determined here that euthanasia is NOT the worst thing in the world. It the last, final, kind and loving thing you can do sometimes.

Hi FOBs,
I haven't had a chance to read today's posts yet, but wanted to share the following with you. Someone left a copy of the spring "Equine Veterinary Management" magazine on my desk, opened to page 10 and two short articles in the "news" section under "philanthropy".

"Barbaro Memorial Fund Boosted"

Pfizer Animal Health and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association have joined forces to help fund laminitis research through the NTRA Charities-Barbaro Memorial Fund. The partnership's aim is to increase awareness of the fund across the horse industry, and encourage further support of cutting-edge research into laminitis prevention and treatment. To contribute, visit www.ridingwithbarbaro.org.

And this one. . .

"Barbaro Inspires Donations"

Under the leadership of Alex Brown--a British-born Thoroughbred racehorse exerciser and Internet innovator--and inspired by Barbaro, a group called Fans of Barbaro has raised almost $1 million in Barbaro's name. On the 29th of each month, the date of Barbaro's death, members are encouraged to donate $29 towards the New Bolton Center's laminitis fund. The group also has saved 2000 horses from slaughter, helping to place them in adoptive homes. For more information, visit www.alexbrownracing.com.

The articles included photos of Alex and Barbaro and Edgar.

Have a good night, All!

Jonna Yes the dilemma re the Shiloh mares, any animal becomes bad because of what people have done to them. But the animal pays the price. But it will be the only think Shiloh can do. Find the people who had them and put them down! OY

Oprah Winfrey tomorrow’s show Lisa Ling investigates Puppy Mills, and with what I saw today don’t know it I can watch it. As with the mares at Shiloh, there is some low life people in this world. Pond Scum!

Remember last year when we all emailed her? Asking her to help stop slaughter. Did anyone ever get a response? May be she will do it after doing the Puppy Mills. What the heck it’s worth a try!

Just got this AWI Action Alert from FOB Gail V:

April 5, 2008

Illinois Legislature to Vote on Double-Decker Horse Trailer Ban

Calls Needed!

Dear Illinois Humanitarian:

Next week, HB 4162 will come to the House floor for a vote. The bill prohibits the transport of horses and other equidae on double-deck trailers.

The usual cast of opponents are coming out against this modest and humane bill, despite overwhelming evidence that double-deckers are a cruel and inhumane mode of hauling horses. At one point, they mislead bill sponsor Representative JoAnn Osmond into considering an amendment that would have completely gutted the legislation. Thankfully, Representative Osmond and others in the Illinois General Assembly took the time to listen to the Animal Welfare Institute and withdrew the harmful "Amendment 2" before moving the bill to the House for consideration.

Background:

In October 2007, a double-deck tractor trailer carrying 59 Belgian draft horses through Wadsworth, Illinois “blew through a stop light at Route 41 and Wadsworth Road and struck another vehicle,” according to local police on the scene of the accident. The severe crash resulted in more than 5 hours of suffering for the horses before authorities could free them from the mangled truck. Sadly, nine animals died on the scene, with another six dying later on due to injuries sustained during the tragedy.Accidents such as this one are not uncommon, since the two-tiered trailer is not designed to carry horses. Only a year earlier, a double-deck truck hauling 41 horses to slaughter at the Cavel International slaughterhouse in DeKalb, Illinois crashed as well (pictured), resulting in the deaths of 16 horses. Similar scenarios have occurred elsewhere in the United States.

Not only is it unsafe to haul horses in double-deck trailers, but it is inhumane -- a point on which humane organizations, veterinary associations and even the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agree. According to the USDA:

Double-deck trailers do not provide adequate headroom for equines, with the possible exception of foals and yearlings. We do not believe that trailers that have two or more permanent levels that are not collapsible can be adequately altered to accommodate adult equines, especially tall equines. A tall equine can be 8 feet tall to the top of its head when standing on all four legs and close to 12 feet tall when rearing.

We acknowledge that double-deck trailers can carry more equines and other livestock than single-deck trailers.... We do not believe that equines can be safely and humanely transported on a conveyance that has an animal cargo space divided into two or more stacked levels. (9 CFR Parts 70 and 88).

Illinois has become a leader in protecting equines from abuse and neglect. Just last year, the Illinois General Assembly overwhelmingly passed legislation banning the slaughter of horses for human consumption. Sadly, although horses can no longer be slaughtered in the state, "killer buyers" continue to buy horses from across the United States as middlemen for the company.

The horses are then shipped to Mexico and Canada for slaughter, often passing through Illinois en route to Cavel's plant in Canada or plants in Mexico. For now, the slaughterhouses preferred method of transporting horses to slaughter remains the double-deck truck.

What you can do:

A vote on HB 4162 is expected next week; please make calls in support of the HB 4162 Friday and Monday to your Representative's district office, and/or the capitol office on Tuesday. HB 4162 is a bi-partisan and widely supported measure. Be sure to mention the USDA quotes above and our facts listed below.

To find your legislator and their contact information, please click here:

http:// www. ilga.gov/reports/rptMemberList.asp?gaid=9&ChamberId=H

[copy to yr browser, then eliminate the spaces]

[can somebody hot link this please? THANK YOU!]

[also - isn't there a DB Thread with all the IL legislators' contact info? or are the IL legislators listed at our WIKI? I don't have time to locate now - somebody try to find and post - if not I will later. CJ]

Because time is short, a quick phone call is the best means of expressing your support for this important legislation.

Facts:

Double-deck trailers are designed for livestock such as cattle and hogs, not horses.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has "reviewed limited data within the scientific literature that suggest increased rates of injury associated with the use of double-decked conveyances for transporting horses."
Again, according to the AVMA's sources, such as the National Agriculture Safety Database and various manufacturers producing trailers specifically for horse transport recommend heights of 7 to 8 ft as being necessary for the safe and comfortable transport of horses (i.e., adequate headroom for the horses to stand comfortably with their heads in normal position); it appears difficult, if not impossible, to meet such recommendations via the use of currently configured double-deck trailers, particularly for taller horses.

The US Department of Agriculture opposes the transport of horses on double-deck trailers and is currently in the process of prohibiting their use completely under the agency's regulations governing the transport of equines to slaughter.
Killer-buyers continue to use these trucks while passing through Illinois on their way to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico.

Be sure to share this AWI eAlert with friends, family and other residents of Illinois, and urge them to call in support of HB 4162, too. As always, thank you for your help!

YIPPEE for CONGO! Can't wait to read the details.

I must say, now that we can breathe, and several FOBs will tell you I told them this to try to ease their anxiety - when I found out that the Judge ruling on Congo's fate was the same Judge who let him go home even after the first judge had ordered that he be killed, my reaction was GREAT - he's not gonna order him killed after letting him go home - you don't let somebody out on bail if you're gonna execute him!

STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY, APRIL 4

Back by popular demand.....FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY. This is the day that you can go back over your lists and make that extra call to those that you feel are getting close.

Since we are targeting Reps (see below), we specifically need help gathering the names of those Reps who you feel are close to cosponsoring HR503. Once we have this information, we can target this list and possibly see a quicker conversion for support. Please email all info on this directly to us through the DB on ABR.

Right now we have a tremendous amount of momentum. We must keep that going and not let up. For the present time, we will be targeting Representatives. The magic number of co-sponsors that we need is 218. We currently have 198. This is very achievable based on feedback from last weeks event. Also, please call those you met with last week and say thank you. Ask if there is any follow up information they need.

Please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!

Thanks again for all that you do!

I take it all back - it wasn't the Judge who decided to let Congo live - it was a settlement between Congo's family and the authorities. Daphne will be posting more details I'm sure.

(although I am sure in my deepest heart of hearts that had the settlement NOT been accepted by the "prosecution" this courageous Judge would have overturned the lower court's order . . . He already showed his courage by letting Congo go home after the earlier order by the first judge that he be put to death . . .)

Hello all,
just an announcement that the Big Hairy Man is doing well. He has not had any more notable hypoglycemia since the doc had us drop his insulin for awhile- after his meds decreased his appetite went up and so did his sugar level (quite high- see saw going the other way again) so we're back to higher doses of meds. He's tolerating it better this time since he's kept his appetite up (an he's more recovered from surgery) so things are looking good. Hopefully the see saw will balance this time ! :)

Punky is a beauty.

###Tom...so sorry about your dog Zinfindel. The dog of my heart was my childhood schnauzer.

###Cheryl Jones, do not worry, something will come up. And yes, COBRA, omg. I could not keep my for long when I got divorced. And Cheryl, btw, do you know where I can get some Dexamthazone PASTE online? I can only find the injectable. Thanks.

### Jonna...Tooth floating was pretty easy. Of course, I wasn't the one doing it, lol. The horses got good drugs, and Rocky is chewing noticably better. The babies are good. Nick would be much more friendly if Joy was not uber-protective. We haltered him today...she was a wreck. Her Sophieness is perfect. It is nasty rainy cold wet here, so everyone is tucked safely away for the night.

Prayers to all the Brennans. Geez, how I feel for them.

#### To everyone who cares about Erin Brennan and her family: Her teacher is organizing a fundraiser. I sent her an e-mail, asking if I may share her address with any of you who may be interested in making a small donation. I sure wish I could take those folks some homemade lasagne or mac & cheese. They are exhausted from Erin's current hospitalization and sure could use some nurturing.
To Tom: My sympathies to you and your family as you deal with Zinfandel's passing. There is something so unconditional about the love shown to us by our dogs. It's sad that their lifespans are so short.
To Cheryl Jones: I am very sorry that you are facing an employment search. Life is increasingly scary for working families and individuals in this country right now. You are such an articulate woman, any workplace should be thrilled to have you come on board, Cheryl!
To JackieTundra: Yippee for Bit Hairy Man, I am thrilled that he is doing better with his recuperation and diabetes management. ####

Hi, Eleven dogs and two cats are currently the only occupants of the Lincoln County Animal Shelter in Stanford, Kentucky. The old shelter closed and reopened with a new director who has established a five days and you're out (dead) rule. This shelter DOES NOT GIVE REPRIEVES!! The eleven dogs and cats had to find rescues/adopters by Monday. However, the director is away and county employees have decided that they will kill all the dogs and cats TOMORROW!!! The shelter's only volunteer is on vacation this week, so she is unable to help. PLEASE read the descriptions of the animals needing rescue, look at their photos and if you can save even one, CONTACT THE TWO PEOPLE BELOW IMMEDIATELY so they can move those offered rescue to a kennel until transport can be arranged. Tom,

I am so sorry for your loss of your Zinfandel. But, a little kiddeeninnasoot whispered in my ear that Zinfandel is running around like a puppy up in Hevvin tonight. Angel Felix and the Crew will take good care of Zinfandel.

Maribel, what can I say? You rock!

Tom,

I know it is hard to believe at this moment, but someday the heartache will be softened and you will smile at the memories.

Take care, friend.

Cheryl Jones,
Joan is right, when one door closes another opens. And this famblee is pulling and praying for a nice big door to open for you. I know it feels terrible right now and seems like the end, but it will work out. I know, having been through the same situation just last Fall. The wonderful famblee here kept me going and just a little over a month later I had the best job I've ever had.

Courage Cheryl! You're gonna be all right!

To Everyone,
Many of us have been following Butterfly Belle, the Horse Russell Baze rode to set a record for wins last year. She has been running in claiming races in the $40K range lately. Now I'm getting really worried for her. She is entered in the 6th race at Bay Meadows on Sunday the 6th. It too is a claiming race...this time, however, it is for a $16K tag! Again, Russell Baze is scheduled to rider.

This Girl deserves a healthy, happy retirement. She is a living part of history. Please pray that she is safe. She's been scratched from her last couple of races and I don't think she wants to race anymore.

NO Horse left behind or Ever Forgotten!

Hiya, FsOB! TGIF, but boy, do I dread riding to RI on I-95 on such a rainy, grey morning. Alex, I hope that the sun shines bright on your new Canadian home! Wishing all a productive day and a safe & enjoyable weekend. Good news about Congo yesterday, kudos to all of you who advocated for him!

#### To Maribel: Sorry that more testing is required. May those occur quickly.
To Lynne B., yes it is just the day for Mac & Cheese, it's cold & rainy.
Hiya, Barb in AZ!
To Debbie LA, I'll send you that info re. the fundraiser for Erin Brennan.
To All: If you wish to send Erin Brennan an e-card at her hosp., please go to www.nemours.org and click on e-services -> e-cards. She is in Room 3208 and has a long day ahead of her, filled with treatments and specialist consults. ####
